Kate, kids and Steve film at Corn Maze

Is TLC throwing together a Halloween episode at the last minute and trying to get all their shots? A local reports the kids were whisked into the maze today, filmed, then promptly whisked out and carted away. On to the next set? Or perhaps they were running short on the hours PA law permits them to film per week. Hey, at least it wasn't a school day this time.

TLC invites this Blog to Sarah Palin's Alaska sneak peek and open house

TLC sure cracks us up! After sending this blog a (very polite, thanks) cease and disest letter in August (which we promptly responded to and discarded, not changing a thing this blog does in the name of Free Speech), TLC has come crawling back and personally invited this Administrator (and likely other bloggers I assume) to go to a sneak peek of Sarah Palin's Alaska in New York City.

Thanks for the invite, Adam. Probably won't be able to make it!
According to TLC: TLC has launched five channels of conversation to promote and support engagement around the show, including four dedicated blogs (focused on culture, politics, media and behind the scenes) and a twice-weekly podcast show. We will also be hosting regular conference calls and briefing events, supporting watch parties and more. The channels will serve as an integrated part of the overall marketing and promotion of Sarah Palin’s Alaska and a complement to the show-related information that is available on TLC.com and the networks’ various social media outlets. About the Open House: TLC, and the team behind www.SPAlaska.com, are hosting an ‘Open House’ event for bloggers, online media and digital influentials to help formally launch the digital/social outreach and engagement effort around Sarah Palin’s Alaska. The event provides a special opportunity to learn a bit more about the show, ask questions, and see some more exclusive clips.

Employee confirms Kate, kids, and cameras at Party City

Photos courtesy blogger Vallonio. Thanks!

A Party City employee, via her Twitter account, confirmed that Kate, kids and "like a million" cameras were at Party City on October 27, a school day, filming.
According to the employee's Twitter (twitter.com/Godney2012)

  • Kate, all eight kids and Steve were filming there for hours

  • They were Halloween shopping

  • The employee was told to pretend she had no idea who Kate is. (How real!) "We weren't allowed to draw attention to her," the employee Twittered.

  • Kate looked good, "flawless"

Dori Hartley on fans, fame, and raising her daughter

"I'm only into her self-esteem, her happiness and her individuality. Her life belongs to her, not me. I don't own her, I only love and guide her with everything I have in me."

Rocky Horror Picture Show star and ParentDish blogger Dori Hartley generously agreed to give us an exclusive interview this week. Thank you, Dori, for giving us your time. Dori talks openly about being thrust into fame, how she dealt with overzealous fans ("I was horrified," Dori says), and raising a grounded and well-adjusted child.

15 minutes Gosselin Style: You were just 18 years old when you first became “a star.” What was it like to suddenly be thrust into the spotlight?

DORI: It was a delight, actually, because at that age, I was ready for fun and had the energy to do everything and be everything, everywhere. It all really happened as a fluke. Getting famous for what I did wasn't part of the plan. I was simply a teenager who happened to have done something that nobody else did before me, so it caused a lot of attention. Being that it was a theatrical type of event, the attention it caused was theatrical in nature. Had I done something else, like figured out some kind of math equation, I'm sure my fame would be somewhat different.

You talk about how people lined up for your autograph. Did this kind of attention ever go to your head?

Quite the contrary. Nothing ever went to my head, in fact, as the years went by, one of the strangest things that I had to (somewhat) combat, was that something was always assumed to be going to my head, by those who'd never met me or had spoken with me. Much of being a public figure comes with what people project on to you, as opposed to what is real. I've had people throw themselves at my boots, kissing them. I was horrified. I remember pulling the girl up and begging her to please never disgrace herself like that again, that no human being should grovel before another. I am only just me. Not better or worse than anyone else. As for autographs, if it makes someone happy, then it is fine with me. I do not wish to be worshipped.

Some celebs are notorious for blowing off their fans. How do you feel about your fan base and do you have interactions with them?

If I have fans, then I respect them as human beings with minds, hearts and the generosity to find a place in their hearts for me. We are all the same. Respect is the name of the game here. No respect equals no relation equals no communication.

You have your hands on a lot of different things, from writing for ParentDish to your music to web design. How important is it to the longevity of a career in the business to spread yourself around and diversify?

Diversity is not always a great thing. Not when it comes to professions. I have been involved in so many projects in varied fields of the arts, and not always does this work for me. My main focus is writing. I am a novelist. Everything else is just part of the contingency plan. Right now, my main goal is to get my novel, Angels and Echoes, published.

Do you think it’s difficult to be the child of a parent who is in the public eye? What kind of effect does this have on children?

I think it's very different for a child who grows up under the parenting of celebs. I can't imagine how that feels. On one hand, the money must make for great opportunity. On the other hand, the parent may not possibly be available on a steady basis. I wouldn't want to take away anything that my child deserves, especially my love and million percent attention, if that's what she wants. We have one life to live, as ourselves, in these forms. Now, really is the moment. I will never be the parent who will ever say, "where did the time go?" because I am with her all the time. It's a very good life. Every moment of my life is for my child, and since the day she was born, she's had my full attention.

Why do you think we hear about so many people who become instant celebrities who end up with serious problems--such as losing all their money or turning to illegal substances?

Probably because fame is so invasive. Between people constantly judging you and freely insulting you for whatever it is that gives them power that day, and the influences around them that tell them they can escape through drugs, a celebrity who isn't grounded in what works for them, might fall prey to advice as well as threat.

Any comments on the appeal of reality TV and America’s fascination with real families? Quite different from the Rocky Horror phenomenon which is all about transforming into someone else.

Rocky Horror was more than a phenomenon -- it was a phenomenon that was a product of the times, which were the 70's. In the 70's, this was break-out thinking. Now, Rocky Horror is sweet, even naive. Rocky Horror's appeal is both daring and wholesome. I do not watch reality tv, so I do not know what the appeal is. I watch Law and Order, The Event, House and some news. That's about it.

Why do you think your daughter isn’t really interested in the “exciting” lifestyle you had?

I'm only into her self-esteem, her happiness and her individuality. I love to support her thinking, and it doesn't even slightly affect me, whether she's into discovering my past or not. To me, that would be oppressive, and I'm just not that. Live and let live. Her life belongs to her, not me. I don't own her, I only love and guide her with everything I have in me.

Would you like your daughter to have a career in the public eye when she grows up?

Only if that's what she wants. I know she's interested in being behind the camera, possibly directing videos. She'd be great at that, she's a naturally gifted director.

Do you think about how you would introduce your past to your kids before you had your daughter? Was there a reason you did not mention it to your daughter until she was older?

I never mentioned it then, now or at any time in between. It follows me. I was out of Rocky Horror for years and years before I had my child. It wasn't a part of my life, in fact, it's not a part of my life now, I am a part of its life. I'm a part of its history. It asks for me, I don't ask for it. When letter after letter comes in and my child notices it, that's how she's introduced to it. When VH1 Behind the Music came to interview me, my daughter was in the crib, in the next room, asleep. Rocky Horror is always there, it's like the background. She sees it's the background in my life, and so it becomes the background in her life as well. You have to understand, Rocky Horror is not something I have any kind of conscience for. It's just there, like the Mafia. And I'm that godfather-type figure. No matter where I go, they keep pulling me back. I don't mind, in fact, I've come to accept it. If my daughter never sees the movie it will be the last thing on my mind. I respond to things related to Rocky Horror, because there are people who care about what I say on the matter. For these people, I will continue to share my experience.

Do you share photos of your daughter with fans?

No photos of my daughter. Ever. This is my strict rule.

Tony: Kate doesn't return my phone calls

Poor Tony, just another casualty in the long list of people Kate has estranged from her and the children's lives. When asked if he keeps in touch with Kate Gosselin, Tony replied, "I tried, but she didn't return my phone calls!"

Is Sarah Palin bailing on Kate?

Kate Plus 8's Alaska episode is now going to air Nov 7, a full week before the premiere of Sarah Palin's Alaska. Seems to us it makes a lot more sense to lead into Palin's show with the Gosselins. And in the trailer for Sarah Palin's new show, there is not one mention of the Gosselins. Will Kate be sent to the cutting room floor? Maybe Palin realized maybe it's not the best idea to associate herself with her.

Kate's revolving 10 nannies could contribute to 'future failures' for kids

Kate has been through at least TEN nannies in the past two years, and here is the photographic proof.

Recent reports say another nanny, Ariel Cantara, has quit on the Gosselins. A little sleuthing and we discovered that Ariel graduated in Fall 2009 from a PA school and then moved to Phoenixville, PA, where she helped open a bakery with a friend way back last spring. On her Twitter account, Ariel talks about going to the spa with "Ashley" and hitting up Phillies games.

What we do know is that the children have been through an unusually high number of nannies and caretakers, even for a large family. The proof is in the paparazzi photos, as well as the episodes themselves. What kind of psychological damage is this revolving door policy having on the kids? Dr. Lindsay Heller, a psychologist in L.A. who actually specializes in working with nannies and families (and has significant experience working with children in both the Head Start program and Children's Hospital of Los Angeles), has this to say:

"All too often, a parent has a conflict with the nanny and instead of making an attempt to work it out, they fire the nanny. The result? The child wakes up the next day and a significant attachment figure in their lives has disappeared. For children, the nanny was a person who maintained their physical and emotional safety on a daily basis. When it becomes clear that that person can just disappear, children may be more cautious to develop a bond in the future, which may contribute to future failures. A loss of or a change in caregivers can be a significant stressor on a child." Dr. Heller goes on to say that a broken bond with a nanny can do significant damage to a child's future "relationships throughout childhood and then in our friendships and romantic relationships as adults."

Some of the nannies/caretakers. (We counted a whopping ten caretakers in just the past few years, not even counting the retirement-aged helpers like Nana Janet, or the family friends like Beth and Jodi):

1. Nanny Unknown. Spotted Fall 2010 at the bus stop. Appears to be the current nanny.

2. Ariel Cantara. Worked for the family circa 2009-10. Paparazzi reports say she recently quit. Was Ariel working for the Gosselins on June 2, 2009, when, according to a local newspaper, she was arrested for retail theft? What kind of background checks are done on the nannies?

3. Nanny Unknown. Spotted frequently with the children in 2009 and parts of 2010. Then disappeared. Jon referred to an "Asian nanny" in a speech he gave in February 2009.

4. Nanny Unknown. Spotted working together with Nanny Unknown #3. Hasn't been seen in awhile.

5. Nanny Unknown and 6. Nanny Unknown. Two girls were spotted helping out with the kids in Los Angeles in April 2009. Not including the two bodyguards who also tagged along.

7. Stephanie Santano. Model who worked for the family. She met them at a twin convention years ago and ended up working for them for one month in 2009. She alleges that she had an affair with Jon.

8. Jenny. Worked for the family in summer 2008 and was dragged along on a two-week trip to North Carolina with them.

9. Ashley Turner. Long-time family friend who just recently went to North Carolina and Alaska with the family.

10. Carla Turner. Ashley's mom who frequently watched the kids in the past. Now it appears Ashley has taken over most of the duties.

Try 2 Keep Up: Kate spotted jogging again

After 10 days of relative recluse, Kate was finally spotted out jogging on Saturday. Is the custody and filming battle wearing her down?

Kate was wearing a 'Try 2 Keep Up' shirt by Nike (at left)--in pink of course!

Jon's stepdad: 'It's none of anybody's business. Family matters are family matters.'

In the first ever interview with one of the elusive "grandparents," Jon's stepdad, Albert Castello, has spoken with Radaronline.

While Castello says he hasn't spoken with Jon, Castello defended Jon, saying that this dispute over filming is a private family matter that should be between the parents. The children should come first. Well said.

(Photo at right we believe to be Castello.)

'Rocky Horror' actress keeps parenting separate from fame

"Wow. OK. The kid does not want me to be on TV. And it's all about what her classmates would think. What I came to accept was that my kid wants her life to herself. She wants to go her own way, and she doesn't want me inserting myself into her world."

Dori Hartley had a fabulous blog post detailing raising her daughter decades after Mom's fame on 'Rocky Horror Picture Show,' and keeping it all distanced from Mommy duties and a child who just wants to be a child, not the daughter of a celebrity. She gets it, it's not all about her. Kudos.

Recounts Hartley:

When I heard that "Glee" was doing a Rocky Horror episode, I half jokingly blurted, "I can't believe they didn't ask me to do a cameo. I mean, come ON. They could have had me pitted against Sue Sylvester. I could have been her dark nemesis." (Which, by the way, would have been fabulous.)

Well, you don't know what terror looks like on a child's face until you tell her that you'd like to appear on a major network series. "No! Mom, no! You can't! Please, Mom, if they call, please don't go on "Glee." All my friends watch it." Wow. OK. The kid does not want me to be on TV. And it's all about what her classmates would think. What I came to accept was that my kid wants her life to herself. She wants to go her own way, and she doesn't want me inserting myself into her world. Sounds familiar.

I was only a teenager when it all started happening for me. Only a few short years older than my daughter right now. I was a kid on the cover of magazines, interviewed by the top television hosts of the day and I was endlessly photographed. I met dozens of celebrities and I performed for them all. I knew no such thing as competition, nor did I feel the need to climb to the top, simply because I created the precedent. I was the top. And, for a few years, I was the reigning Queen of the Misfits. I ruled a part of New York City with a goth-punk flare and a glam touch. Suffice it to say, I went my own way.

And so, my feeling is that my daughter will get around to it eventually. Until then, it's just a jump to the left side of the kitchen, where the big show tonight is all about macaroni and cheese. No meatloaf.

In Kate's world children are capable of making life's important decisions

Kate has always claimed that she will stop filming when the children don't want to film anymore (despite Jon stating on more than one occasion the children indeed do not want to film). However, 10-year-olds and 6-year-olds cannot possibly understand the lifelong implications of selling their privacy, and therefore, are mentally and emotionally completely incapable of making such an important decision, just as Jon correctly pointed out in his most recent statement on Tuesday. Moreover, it speaks to Kate's elementary understanding of child development that she would think for a moment that children of that age are even close to old enough to participate in this kind of decision-making process. Note to Kate, if a child is not capable of writing a coherent essay about the topic of Privacy Rights, a child is not capable of deciding whether he would like said privacy rights violated.

Maybe pictures will help make it clearer to Kate why children need an adult to help steer their boat and not the other way around:

Good morning. Hmm, what should I have for breakfast today?. I know, gummy bears!
Brushing my teeth? Yuck what a chore. Bye-bye, toothbrush!

Eh, I don't like homework. I'll skip it today. Maybe I'll skip it this week, too. And all year. And I might as well skip school while I'm at it.
Dinner time!

No more baths. I don't like my hairbrush either. Life is good.

Who needs a bedtime when you can watch TV all night?

Fortunately in Jon's world, he's finally realized that it's for a parent to decide what is in these children's best interest. Keep up the good work, Jon. Better late than never.

Jon: These multiple changes are exactly why I feel they need privacy, stability, and security. Filming is not in their best interest

"They are acutely aware their life is markedly different from their peers. They are six, and ten, and have to deal with the paparazzi! They can’t visit a public place without a crowd gathering to stare or people snapping pictures with cell phones."

Jon tweeted today further clarifying why he doesn't want the children filmed anymore. He correctly points out that it is not for a child this young to decide whether it is in their best interest to have his or her life filmed. As we have said many times, if children made all their life decisions they would never go to school and eat candy all day. That's why there are parents, to guide them to learn how to make good choices.

On Tuesday 19th October 2010, @jongosselin1 said:

Due to the overwhelming amount of questions, statements, false statements in the media, I would like to clarify a few things. First and foremost, for people who did not watch Jon & Kate Plus 8, I stated years ago, and on television, that I no longer wanted to film and wanted my privacy back. This is not a decision I made lightly or without weighing all the factors involved. The negative effects on my family was my greatest concern and far outweigh any monetary gain we received. Today, my children are much older than when we first started. They are acutely aware their life is markedly different from their peers. They are six, and ten, and have to deal with the paparazzi! They can’t visit a public place without a crowd gathering to stare or people snapping pictures with cell phones.

Whether the children want to film or not is completely irrelevant. Children rely on the guidance of the adults in their life to ensure their best interest. Left to their own most children would not eat properly, visit the dentist, or complete their homework. Do you think a child would choose a day on the beach instead of attending school? Of course. Is this the best thing for them? Is it the child’s decision to make? Of course not.

I am acutely aware of the mistakes I made in 2009 and I am ashamed of the choices I made. I have apologized to Kate, my family, and to my friends. Through counseling I have learned to own my actions. My goal is to move forward in a positive direction.

Lastly, my children have experienced a lot of life changes in a short period of time; new home, new school, parents divorced, increased media attention, and much more. Obviously it would be short-sighted to declare that all of their current struggles are attributed to one factor. These multiple changes are exactly why I feel they need privacy, stability, and security. Filming and displaying their private lives at this time is not in their best interest.

Tony: "The fact that I got a good partner this season who wants to work this hard is great"

When asked about the fiasco that was Kate last season, Tony went on and on about how hard Audrina Partridge (also a reality star) works and how good she is. The man is absolutely giddy to partner up with someone who wants to put in the work, appreciates him, and is halfway decent out there.

TVGuide.com: After last season, with all the hate and negative publicity Kate Gosselin got, how does it feel knowing that fans are cheering you on?
Dovolani: It makes me feel really good. I feel like people have gotten to know us. I feel like people were rooting for me to get a good partner — and I got one! The fact that I got a good partner this season who wants to work this hard is great. With her, I'm able to do what I've always wanted to do, which is to train somebody to be a dancer. As teachers, you don't truly get the credit until you get somebody like her and transform her into a dancer. I feel like I'm getting the best of both worlds, somebody who never danced before and wants to work that hard.

A public plea for help from Jon

Team Jon is asking for help after a family law judge has allowed, at least for the time being, Kate to keep filming the children.

Jon's girlfriend tweeted today: Guys - if you'd like to assist us in our battle please email me at the email on my blog, ill give u more info!! Thanks =)

Ellen's email can be found on her blog.

Family law judge permits Kate to continue filming

Jon's pleas with the court that filming should stop because the children have experienced "negative effects" and are "struggling with emotional and/or behavior issues" fall on deaf ears.

Jon went on to say, "I will have to answer to my children for the rest of my life. I will have to live with this guilt the rest of my life. I am truly sorry."

To Jon, do not feel guilty about trying to fix what you clearly and rightly recognize as a mistake. It's never too late. And keep on fighting for what you know in your heart is best for your children.

In family law cases when parents share legal custody, as Jon and Kate do, when there is a dispute such as there is here over filming, the parents must go to family law court to have a judge resolve it. We can only hope the judge tried to do the best thing given the facts he or she was presented with. But at this point, we'd really like to see the children represented by a children's attorney with extensive experience representing minors in family law court. A lot of adults are telling us how they feel, but a court has yet to hear from the children themselves. We have one question for the judge, however: Why should a child have to give up their privacy to support their parents?

Jon's Statement:

On Friday 15th October 2010, @jongosselin1 said:
As you may or may not be aware, I have been working for some time to remove my children from television. I do not believe being on TV is beneficial to any of them. They are no longer toddlers that are oblivious to what is going on around them. They are now six and ten, in school and desperately in need of a normal life.

Each of them has experienced negative effects of having their lives so public. Some are struggling with emotional and/or behavioral issues. My goal for my children is for them to have a normal childhood, and gain back their much deserved privacy. This is not about money, this is about my children. No amount of money is worth the price my children are paying. You cannot put a price on childhood. Money comes and goes, but you only have one childhood.

For those questions about money and support, I can say I am supporting my children to the best of my ability. All parties involved know the truth about this. I am and have been actively seeking employment. I have been barred from accepting entertainment deals that would generate income for my family due to contractual obligations. I am also actively looking for a job outside of the entertainment industry and so far, have not secured a position. In the mean time, I have been focusing on spending time with my children and providing a safe, stable, normal and private environment for them!

On October 13, 2010, I went to court to act in the best interest of my children- to remove them from television. The judge respectfully denied my plea, and granted filming rights to their mother. I honor the judge’s decision, but I do not support it. I will not stop fighting to remove my children from television. It is not a child’s job to support themselves, or a lifestyle, they need to be kids. I would like to apologize to my friends, family, and especially my children for not taking a stand earlier in my life and not questioning my decisions to have our lives documented and displayed. I will have to answer to my children for the rest of my life. I will have to live with this guilt the rest of my life. I am truly sorry!

Kate's mother trashing family members on internet?

According to Radaronline, they have verified that it is indeed Kate's mother who is going around saying nasty things about other family members in the name of defending Kate.

Just a couple thoughts, it seems to us Kate's mother should look into getting some family therapy to help heal this mess. And second, a mother should not throw other family members under the bus to raise up another. Kate's mother needs to remember that the people she is trash talking are the mothers and fathers of her grandchildren. Parents aren't the only ones who can contribute to parental alienation.

To all the adults in this, each and every one, it would be nice to put aside all these squabbles in the name of creating harmony and peace for all the children involved.

http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2010/10/exclusive-kate-gosselins-mom-slams-aunt-jodi-jealous-greedy

However, interestingly, Jon said in an interview during the time the show was filmed, that Kate's parents are not part of her life at all, nor are they in the lives of any of their 19 grandchildren, and that once she left the nest they disappeared.

Jon: And then Kate's parents just aren't involved.
Interviewer: In your lives? How come?
Jon: They just, they have 19 grandchildren and they're just not involved with any of them. They wanted to be like drop-in grandparents and we're like, "that's weird, who heard of that?" I've run into other people like that. Their grandparents are just not part of their life.
Interviewer: But are they part of Kate's life?
Jon: Nope. They don't even talk to any of us.

The latest Kate Plus 8 rumor .....

Kate Plus 8 will return Nov 14th, but it will be old footage from the July trip to Alaska leading into their cameo on Sarah Palin's new show. So what's the deal, is the show cancelled or just being retooled?

Kate goes tanning on her custodial time

Kate was spotted at Starbucks, Fedex and of course the tanning beds on Sunday. Silly us to assume Jon must have the kids this weekend. It's actually Kate's weekend, according to Jon's twitter today:

jongosselin1 Had a good weekend, enjoyed the nice weather, although I didn't have custody of my kids.

She can't go tanning while the children are in school?

Kate comes out of hibernation to post on her blog

After disappearing for more than a month from her Blog, Kate (read: TLC interns) has reemerged to tell us how difficult her life is now that her eight children are off to school. After a breakfast of "pancakes, oatmeal, French toast" she races the clock to get them out the door. Not one shout out to the nanny who helps her, her lookalike who has frequently been seen at the bus stop.

Says Kate, "Whew! By the time the kids are settled into bed at 7:30 ... I assure you that nothing else gets done... I am pooped ... And I'm in bed by 7:31pm... It's been quite a transition here ... And, well, actually, I prefer to call it my first marathon I've ever run ... does that work????? I hope I at least place for determination... Smile!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Jon takes twins to Olive Garden and mall for their birthday at twins' request

Jon was spotted picking up the twins Thursday evening for a birthday celebration.

http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2010/10/jon-gosselin-treats-twins-mady-cara-birthday-dinner-and-mall

Jon later tweeted that he just dropped the twins off after the girls asked him for a (simple and quiet) celebration at Olive Garden and the mall. Apparently the girls did not ask Jon to take them to Alaska, Los Angeles, Florida, New York City or North Carolina. Nor did they ask Jon to invite the camera crew their mother insists they love so much. The needs of these 10-year-olds do not seem to be wrapped up in trips, money and camera crews.

Birthday prep for the kids

Kate was spotted at Party City on Wednesday. The twins turn 10 on Friday. Here's hoping for a very happy birthday that includes both parents at some point, and no cameras.

Later she was seen with the Kate-lookalike nanny, picking up the children from the bus stop.
