Teachers are not to blame for educational lapses when kids are put to work

Stewart, age 12, with Jodi Foster in The Panic Room (2002)
Twilight actress and former child star Kirsten Stewart spoke out this week about her childhood education. Stewart, who has been acting working since she was eight years old, was in regular school until the seventh grade, when it became too difficult to make it mesh with her career: "My teachers became a problem," Stewart said. "They didn't want to do the extra work or put packages together so I could keep up while away. They failed me. My teachers failed me. Not one, but all of them."

Stewart, now 21, has every right to feel like she missed out on a lot not being in regular school, because she did. But it wasn't her teachers' faults. In fact, they were doing the right thing by not accommodating her.

It does not serve a working child's best interest to constantly give them special treatment. Working or not, kids need to learn that in the real working world, there likely won't be any special treatment either. Projects need to be done, phone calls need to be made, and meetings need to be attended whether one is a star, or has a second job, or is very busy at home. Giving a child the impression the world will bend around their needs does them a disservice. If a child really wants to work, home schooling them may be the only option and is a sacrifice they may have to make and live with.
Stewart (in a Twilight hunk sandwich), 2011

Moreover, singling a child out as special can wreck havoc on a child's social life. Mady Gosselin admitted to cameras that some children at school are mean to her about the show (although fortunately, most are nice, according to her). Being just one of the crowd fosters healthy relationships among children during crucial developmental years when fitting in is of primary importance to a child. Singling a child out as different and special and deserving of special treatment for no good reason (as in, they just happen to work and be famous) can sabotage that child's ability to form healthy friendships with normal kids. In fact, many child stars have reported their closest friends are adults they've met on sets, set teachers, and other actors. Age-appropriate friendships can become very difficult to maintain the more immersed a child becomes in that world, and treating child actors differently only makes it worse.

Finally, it's not fair to the educational needs of the other children in the class and at the entire school for their teachers to be spending so much time trying to accommodate a working child who is being pulled out of school. Kristen Stewart didn't suggest she had a learning disability or other special needs that would require extra attention. Her special needs that required extra attention were the result of a choice to work as a child. She could have chosen to wait to work until she finished school, or her parents could have made the choice for her and made her wait. Teachers, whose time is already stretched thin, need to be spending extra time with students who have real special needs, such as learning disabilities or illness.

Stewart is yet another living breathing example of the negative consequences of children working. It's too bad she missed out on regular school, but it was through no fault of anyone but her and her parents' choices.

Hear, hear!! I wonder how many of the Gosselin children will utter those same sentiments in a few years instead of blaming Mommie Dearest for pulling them out of school to support her?

Marie said... 2

I can just hear Kate also blamming it on the teacher's if her kids fell behind from being pulled out of school too.

Nothing will have been Kate's fault if her children's don't get special treatment and succeed the way in life she wants them to. No, it will be Jon's fault, the teacher's fault anyone else she can possibly blame but herself. Maybe even the kids themselves.

In many ways reading what you wrote Admin, I agree the world does not give you special treatment regardless of most circumstances and this is a lessons, sadly, Kate does not seem to be aware of. She has to be the one to go out and find a job, it's not going to fall in her lap because she was once on TV and had her hand held.

I grew up with disabilities as a child from a minor stroke yet I am able to drive myself on freeways, go to work like anyone else. I feel blessed you could pass me on the street and I feel like everyone else. I was never given any handouts or special treatment and I appreciated it because you learn to expect more from yourself in a way I think. I may not be able to do a lot of math to save my life but unlike Kate I can go through life without needing my hand held all the time. She should be embarassed but she isn't and it's pathetic.

Don't know who she is, but she sounds like an entitled B*TCH. She should thank her lucky stars for the opportunities she's had, and make her parents and "handlers" take the responsibility for her education. It's not a teacher's job to meet the demands of a "working" child -- especially one who seems to be so privileged. Expecting treatment above and beyond what her other non-working classmates got is just plain entitlement. Her parents chose for her to work. THEY are responsible for making sure she got a good education. And now, as an adult, it is HER responsibility to further that education. Stop whining like Kate: "Society gave me a film career; therefore, society owes me a specialized education." Whah Whah Whah. Get a degree, honey. You're going to be a nobody really soon.

Marie said... 4

Maybe that's why her teacher's didn't put packet's together for this girl? To show that even if she was a working-child, of her own choice, they were not going to have any preferential treatment towards her?

I've seen it done by other teacher's they treat everyone the same regardless of your standing, popularity or not. A lot of times they don't but in some cases they do.

I also happen to think it's great she was not given more entitled treatment that it appears she may have gotten.

You can't always have your cake and eat it to, sometimes you have to actually earn that cake.

Kate already has blamed the teachers for when Alexis and Collin were suspended. Maybe someone can find the exact quote. I'm sure if Kate has heard about this story she will sympathize with Kristen. But she should be aware that it's clear to me in just some brief searching Kristen is getting serious backlash around the net for this. She is being called whiney and entitled.

Here is just a sample of one of the comments from Huffington Post, which boils down to essentially, get over yourself Kristen:

"When students are absent from school for long stretches of time, they miss lecture notes, class discussions, projects, group work--all kinds of things that can't necessarily be encompassed in some tailor-made "packet" to be handed in upon the student's return. Shame on Kristen Stewart (and her parents!) for this assertion that it was the teachers' sole responsibility to keep her up to speed while she was going out on acting gigs. How can they be expected to comprehensively teach a student who is absent from class for large chunks of time? Why does she think she deserves to be treated any differently than millions of non-celebrity students, who would receive failing grades in classes to which they were excessively absent? And furthermore, why does the fact that she was "ashamed" of being an actress have any relevance to her teachers, whatsoever?

As someone privileged enough to be homeschooled while making millions of dollars acting, she shows extremely poor taste--and lack of self-awareness--in saying that anyone "failed" her. Such a sense of entitlement! What a BS sob story. Get over yourself, Kirsten Stewart, and go back to making dumb movies about shiny vampires."

Sophomore year in high school I broke my finger at sports practice and spent most of the evening in urgent care getting it x-rayed and a brace and everything, and yeah, it hurt, and yeah I was up late scrambling to finish homework.

I had a pretty big English assignment due in a few days, and I even remember the book, Animal Farm. I went to my teacher the next day and asked her for an extension. It went something like this:

Me: I broke my finger on my right hand, I'm right handed and it's really hard to write, could I have a few more days?

My teacher: But you can still write?

Me: Well yes it's just hard and it hurts.

My teacher: Your assignment is due on the original due date.

I remember at the time thinking she was really unsympathetic and mean. My finger HURT! I get it now though. Even if it was just one small thing, it was a lesson in sucking it up, a lesson that you're not special, a lesson that everyone has shit to deal with and you press on. She absolutely did the right thing. So thanks, Mrs. B.

Didn't Kate say that Tony Dovolani didn't know how to teach her?

at least when Kirsten missed school it was due to her 'working and earning money'. the gosselin kids were 'just playing near their mother who was working at her job'. Oh, and they were just enjoying the 'special things' they are 'entitled to be handed on a gold platter'. where does she come up with this crap? Now that she has been cancelled, can't she just GO and let us move on with the gosselinless era?

As a 3rd grade teacher I have put together packets for children who are ill or required to take a trip out of the country. Last spring it took 2 hours to prepare work for a lovely, dear child who would be gone for 3 weeks.
I rather doubt I would spend two hours of MY time, WITHOUT pay to prepare work packets for Khate's children (due to her ungrateful, entitled behavior).

Hard to keep loving Jon, you mentioned how you'd be remiss to put 6 or 8 packets together for the G8 if they were your students, especially in light of Kate's assholism. I don't blame you. I wonder how much those kids will be penalized for their mom's behavior. It isn't fair that they should suffer just for being related to that insufferable pill, but they will. It's just human nature to want to avoid jerks, and to interact with those kids means having to interact with her. It wouldn't surprise me if the kids' teachers aren't willing to go above and beyond with the Gosselins. And unlike your student, it sounds like the G8 are not lovely dear children in general.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

The children are definitely the victims in this scenerio. The reality show started when they were babies they hardly had a choice in the matter. But schools treating these children differently just enables Kate. If the school had taken a stand and said if you take the kids to Australia when school is in session it's your responsibility to pay for a tutor so they can keep up don't expect us to "catch them up" when they get back, Kate might have shaped up real fast. She doesn't want to spend the money on a tutor or take the time out of her precious vacation to stop everything so the kids can do schoolwork. Instead, it's my understanding the school was pretty lenient about these kids getting pulled out. But I suspect that's a big part of why Kate won't put them in public school, because she knows full well most public schools are gonna say sorry sucker figure it out. She probably figures if I pay you so much for my kids to attend here I expect special make-up work packets.

Well, the sheeple are still carrying on about these darn iPads, saying that Linda F is a fake, really a hater who invented the whole thing. The latest story is that a fellow named Mike reported that he bought an iPad from Kate and got an autographed picture along with it.

I just found the post from one week ago on another blog from someone who said the rumor was that Kate was sent some slightly used iPads, not the Apple ones, but knock-offs, Motorola, and Kate told her helpers to sell them on eBay.

So many truths, half-truths, quarter-truths, that I guess we'll never know, so there will most likely be no iPad episode recap!

-----

I don't know where that story surfaced, but it isn't true. The school is never lenient when kids are pulled out - I don't care if they are the children of the President of the United States. While Lower School is a bit more tolerant than MS and US, all absences are frowned upon and certainly not encouraged or ignored.

Wait until these kids get to Middle School - they'll have a rude awakening when it comes to be taken out of school on a whim. But that's less of an issue since filming has stopped. It would not surprise me, however, that by the time the kids are in Middle School that they will be shipped off to boarding school in Pottstown, that is if there's any money left. After all, she has no need for them to be around.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 18

If the kids went on that trip and were still allowed back at school that's lenient to me. Many schools have zero tolerance for 2 week vacations abroad when you have all summer for that.

Marie said... 19

Where I went to school, this was a few years ago in high school our policy was that for a whole year you were only permitted 3 sick days. If you missed school for any other reason than being sick, which you had to get a doctors note to verify the illness you had to pay $2-3 to go to school on Saturday. More or less a detention fro 8am-12noon. Only way you could get out of say if you had a funeral, a family emergency or something like that. Vacation was not tolerated at all!

Imagine Kate trying to get around that. Grant it, was public school and it seems private schools allow more absences.

What got me on the Au/NZ trip that Kate said, "We are just doing our normal things, living our normal lives, and cameras just come." Uh-huh...any large family out there have the money to take a lavish trip like that abroad in the middle of the year for no reason? Didn't the kids just have summer vacation?!

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 20

To put it another way, the school could have said if you pull the children out for unexcused absences, namely to work, they will be dis-enrolled. Seek out an educational institution that will tolerate such nonsense elsewhere. Since it's a private school they have every right to impose such a rule.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 21

What bugs about people pulling kids out gratuitously for vacations is schools give you SO much time off as it is. Most schools give you big winter breaks and spring breaks and most holidays, not to mention a huge summer break. Way more vacation that most adults get throughout the year. There are weeks and weeks of available time to take kids on vacation at all different times of the year. Here we have ski break and people take their kids up to the mountains. You can even get some good skiing in without pulling your kids out.

What do you want to bet they do now? This has no doubt been discussed in administrative meetings.

Found what Kate said about the school when the kids were expelled: "[The school] did not feel like they could meet their needs anymore, so it was decided they should leave, for now.”

The school did not feel they could meet their needs is a nice way of saying it's all the school's fault. Oh and she also blamed it on Jon too for good measure.

********************************************

They really would dis-enroll kids? Really? Well...yeah I guess if the kids not there most of the time they can find a parent who is willing to have that seat filled.

Bet you Kate would have a freak fest with that.

I am not clear, aren't her two kids who got asked to leave back in school? And didn't Kate say the kids are doing, "marvelously," better? Looks like the school continued to fill these kids needs after all. AKA--it was never the school it was the kids, which is terribly sad.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 25

Of course it wasn't the school. That school has over a hundred year history of meeting children's educational needs. But it also wasn't the kids. It was KATE.

=========

Amen. It most certainly was Kate. One hundred percent of its graduates go to a four-year college or university, including all Ivy League schools, and some of the best colleges in the country. It was Kate. Nobody knows how to help her, and nobody knows how to teach the children. If anyone pulls that absentee stunt when they are in Upper School, including the Gosselins, you better believe the school could and would send them packing.

A teacher posted here that she wouldn't put together packets for the Gosselin kids if they were in her class. I'm sure that she is a very fine and caring teacher, but I would hope that her students wouldn't be punished for the behavior of the parents, regardless of who those parents were.

fidosmommy said... 28

Maybe the teacher would like to teach KATE a lesson. When you make these hairbrained decisions to pull your kids out of school there are consequences. It affects more than you. Your kids will not get the education they deserve and we are willing to give right here in our classrooms. If we intended to do off-site teaching, we would have it in our curriculum. Let your kids come to school and get what we have to offer right here, lady.

fidosmommy said... 29

Both my brother and my sister were teachers, as was my Mom before she became a librarian. They all bent over backwards for their students, taking time after school to be available for questions and confidential chats as the kids needed them.

One of my brother's students was in an accident and was in the hospital and in rehab for several months. The parents figured he would have to
repeat that grade. My brother offered to come to the rehab place every night to bring some work to do so the kid could at least partly keep up. The parents helped out with it, and my brother would bring in a weekly test for each subject to check on how things were going. It turned out that the kid needed to go to summer school for one subject only.

Had that same child been out of school for that amount of time for a vacation in Italy, my brother would have said TO THE PARENTS, Hope
you have a great time, and I hope you will be OK with it when grades come out. Missing that amount of time for a trip is going to have a real impact on grades. I teach here and there is your child's seat. I can't teach him if he's in Europe. Packets? If you want to hire me as your child's personal tutor, fine. I charge $25 an hour for preparation and grading. When are you leaving for Italy?

fidosmommy said... 30

Oh my. I didn't mean to say "in rehab for several months". I meant "weeks". Sorry.

Marie said... 31

What strikes me as odd is the following:

Kate said her long-time goal is to get all 8 kids into a good college. That was the sole reason she did TLC, aside from memories so her kids would have college funds.

Then she said, "my kids go to an academic challenging school." My guess is it's a college-prep school.

Yet she turns around and continues to pull these kids out of school left and right. She blabs about how smart her kids are, how her kids are always ahead and the top of their classes...but how can that be when her kids are gone of some vacation?

Seems she truly misses the mark on what value in education means.

Starz22 said... 32

As for Kristen...she started "working" young and believe's she is special, and deserves the right to special treatment.Like most celebritys, they believe they are above all rules...ANY rules.
Because Kristen is an "actress" she is entilted to anything and everything she wants. She wanted to act...it took time away from her studies...her making money was more important than her getting an education. Both she and her parents made that decision. They can NOT expect the school or the teachers to bend all the rules and make execptions for her.Because she has a JOB dosnt make her more important.
Why should her teachers who are over-worked already...take even more of thier personal time to make sure this ONE student is up to speed ,when its thier fault she is behind in the 1st place?

Like the Gosselin kids. They should have never been taken out of school so kate could work.Let kate work...its HER job.Let the kids film when they are on vacation or out for the summer.
The kids are not up to speed.they need to be in school.Sorry to make anyone mad,but its true. The tups are lacking in many ways.I dont blame the school...I blame kate. She is doing everything to keep the tups behind. To keep them looking like babies.
Kate can't blame the school...and Kristen can't blame the school or teachers...The parents are the ones in control...if thier child fails or is left behind...they have no-one to blame but themselves!

I imagine the holidays are quite a lonely experience this coming time around.

October: Kate wouldn't want to take the kids alone unless Steve comes.

November: If Steve/family don't come for Thanksgiving, who will they share the holiday with?

December: How will Kate afford enough presents for 8 kids? And if Steve/family don't come there is going to be a lot of left over eggnog!

January: Is Steve/family don't come, that's going to be an even smaller New Years Eve party.

Question: SINCE WHEN DID STEVE BECOME THE FATHER/SORTA-HUSBAND??? I do not think a bodyguard truly ges this involved with people they are guarding! It's creepy. Kate the kids already have a DAD!!!

I haven't read the comments, but a big round of applause Admin! I was recently at a teaching professional development where a guest lecturer told the assembled crowd that if we were all better teachers suicide rates would drop. In fact teaches were directly responsible for kids committing suicide.

He picked the wrong crowd and the wrong day for me, as my brother recently chose to end his life. At his funeral his teachers wept with us (even though he graduated over 7 years previously). They were in no way responsible for his death, and I refuse to take that responsibility on myself.

Special consideration is one of the banes of my teaching. I'm happy to modify and go the extra mile for kids that have learning difficulties, but when it comes to holidays, jobs and other absences it's ridiculous. I'm dealing with a child who's been off filming a movie for 3 months. She's having trouble integrating back into her peer group, and only has a few months left until she graduates.

Anyway thanks for the shout out for the teachers!

Every interview I've read of Kristen Stewart, she has come off as a pompous ass. Like a smart ass know-it-all who doesn't even want to act. If she hates it so much & hates the spot light so much, why do it?

She was/is in the Twilight series, one of the biggest teen drama (crap) fests out there. Of course she is going to get recognized & have the paparazzi swarm her. She is supposedly dating a hot young star-Robert Pattinson- yet remains mum about it (good for her on that), so of course people ask. She just always seems so put out about her fame & hates the accolades about it.

She once said that being swarmed by the paps made her feel like she was being "raped". That didn't go over well. She's young, but not so young (21) that she doesn't understand the ins & outs of Hollywood. If she hates it just so damn much, then get the hell out of it & go to college. She always looks so...sour & pissy. It's annoying to pass the buck when it was obviously *her* that didn't want to DO the work & get through school, but for once someone isn't the blaming the parents, surprisingly.

Wait for it. As soon as the work dries up, maybe that will happen as well.

My children go to public school, and we live by county school system rules. We are allowed 3 days of parental discretion absences (for example, taking students to visit colleges, or on that long weekend trip to Disney). You can take more than that, but your student may not get the opportunity to make up any work from the absence. Teachers are not required to create packets of work related to parental discretion absences. Some do, some don't. I think the ones who don't create the packets have gotten burned before - take the extra time, and the student never turns it in.

I really applaud the teacher (fidosmommy's brother) who visited the student in the hospital and rehab facility to help keep him up to speed. What a gift that was for the student and the family in a very trying time.

On a related note, I watched Ellen yesterday. And two little girls (about 6?) were on singing a Nicki Minaj song. She came out to meet them. The VERY FIRST thing she said to them was 'stay in school' "Put school first and singing second and everything will work out!" When she explained they were to go on a shopping spree with her, she mentioned they could get "book bags, pencils, paper etc" School supplies. She has found a new fan in me. So often celebrities come out and tell kids you can be what you want (which is nice BUT kids take that to heart). Her words, I am sure, will stay with those girls. She didn't encourage children to work, and she didn't encorage parents who put their kids on YouTube to be famous.

Dallas Lady and Teacher said... 38

Even if I put together all the packets for a kid, they still would probably be behind! Why? You don't really learn a heck of a lot from packets. The true learning experience is in the classroom.

In a packet, you've just got instructions for assignments and worksheets. In the classroom, you collaborate with your peers, get needed instruction directly from the teacher, conduct research with your group, discuss what you've learned, demonstrate and present what you've learned.....there's SO much you can't ever put in a packet.

If a child is going to miss that much school due to their travel/competitions/career, the parents need to just hire them a full-time tutor. You can't engage in the learning if you aren't HERE.

No sympathy for Stewart and what a jerk move blaming her teachers.

I agree with all that has been said. Schools today are a lot stricter today, cause they have to prove performance. Taking kids out to fill a parents dream, wish etc, is stupid. Kate does not care if those kids learn, as long as they do not embarrass her. Like 2 of the tups did. Kate showed her disregard for education , when they took trips. Kate hardly knew anything about the places they went, and if she gave any info it was wrong, even when she had a pamphlet, right in her hand. I watch the Duggars, and they do make their trips a part of learning, they do look up where they go and listen to the guide and they are Home schooled.
As for this rumor of Kate on the Food channel, shame on them if they let her on that channel. Kate would be an insult to professional cooks everywhere, I would write that channel an email of complaint and tell them to hire me, at least I can cook, very well, and low sodium, and interesting food for all. What Kate cooks looks disgusting, her food combos are disgusting. And to have Kate talk about healthy eating, would be the biggest insult of all. What Kate considers food for healthy eating, she should go and get a book on healthy eating, eating a salad w/eggs, for dinner is not exactly healthy. Kate does not even hit all the required food groups to keep a person healthy. And if you plan on being in a marathon, their diets are very different, they eat a lot of carbs, stuff Kate would say is fattening and would not eat. Just cause you buy organic, does not make one a healthy eater. But in Kates mind she is. Kate reminds me of people I knew, who would only read the back cover of a book and then claim they knew everything about the book, without reading it. Kate does not follow through on anything.

Re: Private schools and attendance. One of the reasons that a school district is so strict with attendance is because their funding is tied daily to how many students are in their seats. If a child misses a day other than for illness, the school receives no money for that child that day. Private schools are not reliant on federal/state funding and therefore are more lenient.

I taught in a private school and taught a child actor (no one particularly famous). He missed a lot of school each week but we were told to accomodate him. We did put packets together but where I saw him struggle was not necessarily academically but socially. It was sad because he was a good kid, if a bit arrogant.

As for Districts not providing support, if it's legitamite they do. My 6 year old recently broke her elbow. The doctor pulled her out for 6 weeks out of concern that she would reinjure it at school, despite the cast. Our district provided a home teacher to come work with her for 2-3 hours a day to keep her current and prevent loss of skills. And it wasn't just because she is in special education. This our district's policy for ALL kids out for long term medical issues.

Kate doesn't care all that much about education, this school to her is about status. If they happen to learn something, that is just a side effect. Education goes out the window when money and trips come along, she could care less.

On the RV trip they could have made it into a big history lesson, geography lesson, cultural lesson, and so on. They had HOURS inside the RV to instruct the kids. Instead what do the kids tell us? All they do is watch DVDs. And Kate admits, she brought along a ton of DVDs. She just wanted her trip and she just wanted the kids to be pacified while she had her trip.

The most she managed to do was make them guess their destinations. But gathering together a rock and a chisel and asking kids to guess where they are going is hardly all that stimulating to little brains. Not to mention, it makes a lot more educational sense to tell the kids where they are going ahead of time, read up on it, talk about it, watch a movie tied in with it. Instead of just dumping this or that landmark on them as they arrive and not even knowing what it is yourself to properly teach them.

You know there are actual studies out there that people actually feel the most satisfied about a vacation during the PLANNING stage of the vacation? They actually feel less satisfied during the actual vacation. Getting the kids excited for this and learning about the places they go could have been immensely satisfying to them. Another blown opportunity.

What the kids learned on the RV trip, geographically speaking, is that the Grand Canyon is a "big crevicey thing" and "wasted space". Oh and Franklin Roosevelt is on Mt. Rushmore.

Kate tweeting that she helps the kids with their homework is a joke. I'm sure Mady and Cara have to help the tups after they've finished their own homework and before they give Kate her stress-relieving massage.

I think any backlash that the very entitled Kristen Stewart is getting from her ill-conceived interview comments is very well deserved. Her teachers failed her? All of them? This is such incredible arrogance that she AND her parents should be ashamed, but I also read it as the narcissism that we see in our K8. Another example I guess of how people just don't know how to serve them, teach them, do FOR them.

Students with special needs like child actors are best served by home-schooling, set teachers or tutors; the routine of either a private or a public school cannot serve them nor should they. If the reason for absence is medical, than at least the public sector does, by law, provide teaching in a home setting. Child actors do not fall in that category.

I recently read an interview with a father/teen son team who had taken a several month odyssey through Africa, the MIddle East, places not commonly traveled. The father is a journalist, he was writing about their adventures. The son took textbooks if I recall, and tried to keep up with his high school coursework. And of course this trip was in itself an amazing learning experience. In the interview the son said he was glad he had gone, and doing the school work kept him pretty current but what he missed, and what there was no substitute for, was a teacher in the classroom. I thought that pretty mature.

When our children were young, before middle school, we occasionally took a few parent discretion days when my husband had medical conferences in interesting parts of the country. They went with us to DisneyWorld, Washington, D.C, and Toronto, Canada if I remember correctly. But middle school, with the increased intensity of work and homework, ended those trips; our kids actually did not want to miss that much school. But a day or two is not two weeks of school.

I agree with all of you who say that K8 only lives in the moment, she does not have a vision for the future, at least one that require that SHE do something. Her attidude is "whatever will be, la la la". Right now her latest tweets show that she is trying to prove her "mommy goodness", though in her typical whiny way - so much reading, so much homework, so much math. I actually think she is overwhelmed, another consequence of not thinking what manipulating your ovaries might do, because trying to help 8 kids every night, especially with her short attention span and lack of interest in education, is going to be frustrating. There is only so many hours between dinner and bedtime. Not that this is any of my business, but her children might be better served in a school less academically challenging and closer to home, eliminating the lengthy travel time they also endure. I honestly don't see her 6pack, the ones she continues to infantilize, lasting in a tough academic milieu. She talks about people not knowing how to help her; she does not have what it is going to take to help them.

And sorry Kristen Stewart, Kate, and everyone else, it is a parental responsibility to make sure a child is given the education he/she deserves.

This is a quote taken from an interview Ms. Stewart recently gave regarding her upcoming film "Snow White and the Huntsman":

"She is sort of the last shred of hope for her land. She has this ethereal, spiritual connection to her people—she really feels things—and so it's like we don't really feel empathy," she explained. "I've had some f--king eye-opening experiences on this movie. I think that to truly care for something isn't just putting yourself in that situation aesthetically and then going, 'Oh my god, I feel so bad for them.' It's truly not thinking of yourself at all. The way that you fight is that you must take out anything that hurt your people. Basically, I'm fighting evil—I'm fighting the most evil motherf---ers—and it's fine that they're being killed. It's anguish. It's literally f--king anguish. She takes absolutely no pleasure in ever hurting anything."

****

I could be wrong, but is "aesthetically", or more specifically aesthetics, really the right word to use in this context? Is she trying to say that truly caring for something isn't only appreciating the beauty of the situation and then feeling bad when things go wrong or it's not as perfect as it once appeared?

And do we not feel empathy for her character because she has this deep, spiritual nay almost psychic connection to her people? Because, like, I totally agree, empathic people are SUCH a turn off for me. Definitely on my top 10 list of pet peeves

Um, Kristin - I think you should have stayed in school. Homeschooling apparently didn't do much to help your ability to articulate your thoughts and feelings coherently.

Millions of students with special needs are served in public school settings every day. To say that students with special needs should not be served in regular schools is really offensive. Students should be educated in the least restrictive environment possible given their particular disability. That is the law, in addition to being in the best interest of the child.

Khate can defintely afford it, she doesn't want to put in the effort. She's simply flat-out lazy and puts the least amount of effort into everything she does, just enough to skate by. Her kids, tups especially, are a unit. If they can't all do an activity together at the same time, they don't do it at all. I doubt all eight kids liked gymnastics. Even if they did all enjoy it, she could divide the kids up and attend several classes instead of sticking all six into the same class. It will allow them to socialize with other kids outside of school. Khate has a nanny and Stevie boy for goodness sake, let them handle the kids who aren't attending class. It doesn't even have to be gymnastics, it could be dance lessons or soccer...anything. But Khate is too lazy, which is truly sad considering she know has all the time in the world right now to get the kids involved in activities. I'm sure Jon would be willing to help if only Khate would grow the eff up and cooperate with him.

No one is indicating they are against kids getting help with REAL special needs. We're talking about special needs like acting or vacations. In fact I'm suggesting just the opposite, that spending so much time with a working child takes away from time that should be spent with an autistic child or deaf child or anything else a child cannot help.

If the kids want to go out of state to college, they'll be treated like all others - if they apply and are accepted and can afford it, they can go. If you're referring to the PA 529 Fund that was established when the sextuplets are born - it was set up for for DONATIONS (all PA parents can set up a "college savings fund" for their kids which gives them tax advantages). The students can attend any approved college or university - even overseas. There no information how much is in the fund at this point for the Gosselins and so, just like any other student wanting to go to college -- if they can afford to pay the tuition and are accepted, they can go.

I may have mentioned to you all that some news has been revealed in our family of some children (inlaws of inlaws) being badly neglected. Part of that neglect has been trouble in 2 different school districts due to excessive absences. And about to be a 3rd district as of this week. How are kids on TV any more special or entitled to education than these kids that I know? Because kids on TV are making money?

I know I sound like a dreaded 'liberal' here, but is money always the deciding factor? Stewart was making money so she should have been entitled to special treatment despite her absences? The Gs make money, so they are entitled also? But because these kids that I know arent bringing in dollars, they will {hopefully} go to foster care at some point and parents to jail or something. Why arent non-wealthy kids not entitled to the same 'make-up packets' that Stewart (and likely Kate) demanded? The cause of the academic problem is the exact same: excessive absenteeism.

Education is like health care in my eyes; an entitlement of everyone despite your net worth or lack of.

So I just re-read this and I dont think I am clear. Would Stewart and Kate advocate for legal changes that all children with excessive absenteeism be coached and assisted through special make-up packets and individual attention? NO MATTER the reason for the absenteeism? NONE should be held back or held accountable for their own actions?

Kate will do anything on tv and thinks she's qualified to do it, too. I think someone is just throwing ideas out there to keep Kate's name in the media because anyone who has seen her on-screen knows she doesn't have 'it'. No one on the Food Network has anything to worry about.

After posting recipes on her blog I think it was natural that there was speculation about something more. I mean, what else is left for her to prove before landing her own show? In her eyes, she's already shown that she has the talent to host a show, so to showcase her cooking genius on her blog should seal the deal for her. Snark intended. I hope no one thinks that I believe it to be true, but I just wonder if Kate actually thinks that way. It's scary, but I honestly think she does.

Mom said: she will do anything to make that kid a star. And mom denied giving the kid Red Bull on the View, but if you caught the Toddlers & Tiara episode, they blurred the can that was in the garbage can, the girl called it her special drink(if you ever had Red Bull, that stuff is nasty, makes your heart race, can't imagine what that does to a little kid). I would bet money that no way is Kate anywhere near even applying for one nursing job. That is way beneath her. Just a year or two ago, she was moving around $100,000 from bank account to bank account to hide it from Jon. Since then, how may episodes has she banked, and whatever little money she got from her AB infomercial, that she's never actually said she uses. She's got a ton of money to go through before she lowers herself, (her opinion of a nursing job, not mine). If she was anywhere near needing a job, the Audi would go, but probably after the kids private school. She's obviously not broke, she's out shopping at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Those are want items not "needs". If she was close to desperate, she would be hauling Jon to court for more money. But she knows she has too much hidden assets to open an investigation of her "bookkeeping". A forensic accountant would open all kinds of ghosts in her closet, looking at her trip expenses, how many rooms was she paying for when traveling with the "body guard", justifying a body guard, road manager. Kate has just too much to hide to be an open book in court right now. And Mady and Cara are getting to the age where they will soon be asked by a therapist in family court about home life and who they want to live with.

Anything funny going on would be reported by a scout leader, where the school is probably held to more secrecy.

Surely Kate's older girls tell friends about what goes on, you know, what mom said, what mom did that they didn't like normal kids stuff I assume. Like it or not kids talk to friends and Kate as much as she thinks can't control her kids 24/7 she can try but it will only create rebellion down the road. And I see it happening possibly. She'll be in for quite a rude shock.

But for now all you hear is how her kids constantly praise Kate, how her kids think she is so wonderful, that her kids love her, give her massages, love her cooking and blah, blah, blah! Just wait till her twins are 15. They'll be asking for privacy, cell phones, online access, facebook accounts, myspace whatever else will be out there by then. And what's that saying? Oh yeah, Kate--you'll have a lot of explaining to do!

Her face now is drawn, haggard, and her neck is sagging, and her collar bones sticking out. What has she done to herself? Such a shame - she was so natural looking, thick hair, great skin, but in her quest for perfection has done just the opposite - she's aged considerably.

I don't think Kate cares about education or activities for the kids, because it might mean that she would have to waste her money on it. Worse to her, though, she does not want to have to be anywhere near the 'unwashed masses',the rest of us who put our children in sports, music and other activities.

She is way too entitled to have to breathe the same air as us and feels the world should all bow down to her and her 'famous, gifted'kids. No one else should get special treatment, only after her kids have all their 'special' as in famous and rich, needs met. No, I don't think Kate even thinks we deserve anything, because she doesn't think beyond herself and her kids when they're making money for her.

This is the 1st time I have heard Kate say anything about reading with the kids.Who's been doing it up til now? She has no idea how stupid she makes herself sound!I guess reading starts in Gr. 1. Kate will send the kids to Jon or away to boarding school,as soon as filming goes away for good, or she gets a job in Hollywood.

I don't believe for one second that Kate has considered going back to Nursing, too mediocre for her.She always says'you can't go back.' She has money hidden from 150 episodes, in 11 accounts Jon said he knew about. No way she needs a regular job,yet or ever really.Kate may not be smart, but she is about what matters most to her,'her money.'

Thanks, Koopdedoo- I'd tell you I like you, but that's way too personal.......

Life & Style exclusive: Kate Gosselin returns to nursing
With the cancellation of Kate Plus 8 and no new TV offers in sight, Kate Gosselin is returning back to her work as a labor-and-delivery nurse, a friend reveals exclusively to Life & Style.

"She just completed more courses to renew her license," the friend reveals to Life & Style. According to the pal, Kate is terrified about being able to make ends meet and support her family. "She has no clue how she'll continue to pay for the kids' private school and living expenses."

Although Kate, 36, has said she'd prefer TV and film work to delivering babies, she recently shared that she'd be up for any job: "The bottom line is I have eight kids to provide for!"

Admin, are you talking about Disneyland or Disney World? We do Disney World, and I guess we've really lucked out, because the past four times we've been there, it has not been crowded. It's actually been enjoyable, with few lines, no waiting in restaurants and no wait for buses or transportation to the parks.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 101

Disneyworld. Any time I've been there it's been a zoo, but it's been a few years. If it's not crowded now I suspect that's probably because of the economy. But if it's not crowded GREAT, all the more reason not to pull your kids out of school to avoid crowds, as there are none.

Kristen Stewart is a whiny, entitled ,pitiful actress who makes stupid comments for the reaction she gets. She claims she hates acting and the fame, but whenever she isn't in the movie mags, she makes statements like this. Blaming teachers? Her parents and Kristen need to come back down to Earth, the air is hard on their brains in whatever stratosphere they're living in.

She sounds like she should quit acting and get an education. It would at least allow her to carry on a conversation when the acting gigs dry up.There are only so many vampire movies and sequels you can make. She always has that look on her face that someone has peed in her cornflakes.

Anonymous when Westcoaster said "Students with special needs" she qualified it by saying "like child actors". In no way did I interpret it as her saying that students with special needs due to a disability should not be served in regular schools. Your statement to Westcoaster "To say that students with special needs should not be served in regular schools is really offensive" is way off base. Go back to twittering with Kate.

Thing is Kate said, "I quit my job as a nurse to be home with the kids." If she is just now reading with her kids, she's blown that opportunity to enrich her children's lives by reading to them. I quite imagine at least a few of her kids may move in with Jon perhaps.

Her excuse of, "We can't go back," completely and utterly lame. She just wants to ride this train for all its worth that's been proven. Her arrogant attitude...who would hire her as a nurse? Her last visit to the dialysis clinic clearly showed she lost a lot of her knowledge.

Even if she sends the kids to boarding school we all know she can't afford it because she's oh-so-broke here but only for the kids is she broke, not herself.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 105

I remember a few years ago we were all complaining we never see Kate actually reading with these kids or caring about getting them ready for school. Not two episodes later all of a sudden Kate was doing some workbook with the kids. And of course after that we never saw something like that again. Quota fulfilled.

School Should Trump Disney said... 106

Administrator said...

I would worry that kids would start to feel like school is not important, that going to Disney is more important than education. I think there needs to be an awareness that when a child is a teen and wants to skip school and go have fun at the mall and you tell them know, that that child may very likely say, but you let me skip school to have fun at Disney, what's the difference? There really is none.

Disney is crowded no matter when you go, it's a fact of life. It's not even like it's all that educational, it ain't exactly Colonial Williamsburg; I have to say I really respectfully disagree with parents pulling kids out of school especially for Disney.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

It also teaches children that they are special little snowflakes who are too important to brave the lines with all the other kids whose parents take them on vacation when school is not in session.

fidosmommy said... 107

She was also sitting on a bed at the end of one episode reading to all of them. It was a book that went along with some children's movie being released. Clearly a promo for the movie and nothing more.

Oh, I just had a frightening thought. If she becomes a nurse, patients might only hear, "Me, Me, ME! I am a famous nurse, you are lucky you have me! This is your first baby? I have 8, count 'em 8! I'm so special! Hope you'll name your baby after me!"

It will continue to be about Kate even if she does go back to nursing. Thought, as a nurse here, doesn't one have to be honest? That's a quality she seems to be lacking in!

fidosmommy said... 109

What do you suppose the Gosselin sextuplets remember of their trip to Disney World? I mean what do they remember on their own, not what Mommy whispers in their ears or prompts them to say.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 110

I think the same kind of people who show up to work late every day, leave early, call in sick when they're not sick, don't return phone calls, and don't complete projects, could very well have been kids who were carted out of school and off on vacations whenever the mood struck. These kids of choices Kate is making have LIFELONG consequences for these kids.

Marie said... 111

Could you imagine Kate and her kids actually waiting in any line?! I mean we've never seen them have to wait in line for anything. They've always gotten backstage passes, up close with animals, even a penguin to meet them off an airplane--I thought this was reality. That is SO NOT reality! No zoo in their right mind would allow a penguin to greet "normal," people off an airplane! If they have, I'm jealous because I missed it! *sniff*

Sad really, some of my sweetest mommy memories are laying next to my children, reading to them just before they went to sleep, which we did every single night as a matter of course.

You are so right on all points re:Kate and missing out on the best parts of raising kids and reading to them is such a magical, bonding time for everyone.I read to my kids as babies up until they could take over the reading, and then they took turns reading the bed-time story. It was something they earned, by learning to read quicker than their sisters.

Kate is so not ready to be a nurse. Can you see her standing up in a staff meeting and saying,'I'm in charge and it's never going to change.' I'll be in charge of the phone, you people go to work. Not!

She has lost her confidence in herself as a nurse, been gone too long and isn't as educated as in years worked, as her fellow nurses and she knows it.Besides, she can't get shit or blood on her now, she'd be ruined...

There were hardly any nights my mom didn't read a story or two to me at bedtime. If she couldn't, my dad would lie on the chaise lounge across the room and make up a fun story that always had my dog and me as the main characters. When Mom and Dad were both unavailable (very rare), my older brother would read to me. My favorite was Winnie the Pooh. I could not get enough of those books. I had heard them so many times, and if my brother (4 years older than I) had trouble with a word, I would correct him. He'd go to Mom and Dad and announce I didn't need to be read to anymore, I had the book memorized.

My payback to the world for this gift from my family is to enjoy reading stories to other peoples' children. Love it!

My 3 girls and their families all enjoy reading too. They all drag around their beat up Robert Munsch book,'I'll Love You Forever.'Now, I am enjoying reading to my grandkids and it's pretty sweet too. My, now I am in an over-sharing mood to-day, aren't I? Stopping now.....

Kate just got back from a relaxing vacation in Wyoming a few days ago, right. But read this exchange below:

SuperPattyPiePatty Pie@Kateplusmy8 Hey Kate! Where are you? Rumor has it you were photographed at the Target in Bora Bora! ;-)

@Kateplusmy8Kate Gosselin @SuperPattyPie oh my yes! Please start it... And maybe it'll happen! Lol

I can't believe she said, "if you are sending me, I am going. That is exactly what I need lol." We all know that Kate would take that free vacation and leave her kids behind. My goodness, how can she say that she NEEDS a vacation. She just got back from a great one that lasted several days. She doesn't live in reality. She does think of vacationing all the time. Who does that--especially an unemployed divorced mother of 8 small children.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 125

Maggie thanks for posting that. She's completely crazy even when she is joking. Yes I know she is joking, but why are all her jokes about either speeding or someone paying for a free trip for her? How can someone who has been on more vacations than the average American could ever hope for in ten lifetimes STILL want to turn right around and go on another?

Why doesn't she just be a travel guide for cripe sake.

Marie said... 126

IS SHE MENTAL??!! Did Kate just ask a sheeple to start a rumor she was in Bora Bora so that someone might magically send her there?! Seriously?

Good Lord woman. If that's not disturbing I don't know what is. She just got back from a vacation and she needs another one? Why...?

You open your dictionary to the word Enigma and there's this big picture of Kate's face next to the word. You'll also find her face under the following words: narcissistic and ego.

Gift of grab said... 127

Oh.My.Word! Or should it be Lordy Be!?

Kate is CERTAINLY NOT going back to nursing. Did anyone here seriously believe that for even an instant?

I am beyond convinced that she has a very nice nest egg, and all of her attempts to plead her "poor unemployed mommy of 8" case are pure invention for her untutored masses (granted, the coupons in her hand in the INF pictures today were a nice touch--GREAT acting job, Kate, are you trying out for something?). She does this for sympathy; she knows it will bring instant attention and support from her brainless tweet fans--as it does. And because the more people who publicly say "awwww," the easier it is for her to whip the tabloid rumor mills in her direction. Why someone so "admirable" and "successful" seems to need continual stroking from strangers is a question that none of her fans seems at all bothered by.

What's really interesting about the last several days of tweets is that almost none of her supporters has dared broach the Wyoming b'day extravaganza. The picture with the "fan" was posted in numerous (non-fan) tweets to her, and so fans have surely seen it, but no one has even asked her about it? She's got them well trained. They all know that she has things to hide, and by golly they're going to help her hide them. After all, if you ask a question that goes outside of her boundaries, it's clear you won't be favored with a reply. And that is all most of these people are seeking: an acknowledgment from someone they don't know but whom they consider somehow "better" than them.

How sad is that?

And those years her kids are going to want Kate to read to her, aren't going to be years she can get back but sadly I don't think Kate has that concept that special time does not have to be jetting here and there. And if she complains now about helping her kids with homework, best wait a few years till her kids his middle school and high school, then she’ll probably wish for helping first graders read.

Oh boy Kate going back to nursing. I'd love Kate to value what she has and whatever job she gets. But I have a feeling her over-inflated ego self might get in the way to treating other people with respect.

I don't think its confidence she's lost, I think its self-awareness is what she's lost. IF she truly wants to go back to nursing there is nothing stopping her, except perhaps having a better attitude. Getting a little dirty, well, that's part of the job. If she's so freaked out about stains and supposed *hours* of removal...gee, ya know, find a different job. If you have no passion for the job, you wont enjoy it why torture yourself?

Be a kick to see her freak out like that. She won't have time to bemoan how exhausted or a little rumpled or stained she might be. No time to sit on her butt and tweet either!

Alas jude I don’t see anyone who knows how to chat on a blog. I don’t think it’s possible, but, hey, I could be wrong dear. You are Canadian if I remember so Happy Thanksgiving to you.

What's also eye rolling is that sheeple making fun of the "rumors" about where Kate was. Um, there were only two rumors that I saw this week. One that Kate was at Bed Bath and Beyond, which is sort of a who cares rumor. The other that she was in Colorado/Wyoming spending the kids' money. The Wyoming rumor was TRUE we have PHOTOGRAPHIC PROOF OF IT, and Colorado makes perfect sense since sometimes you fly through there to go to Wyoming. IN FACT a good friend of mine who now lives there suggested we fly into Denver when we come see her. Kate posed with a fan in a restaurant out there, the pic is all over the net.

There was no wild rumor about Hawaii or Europe or Bora Bora. It was one rumor about the west and it was TRUE! We're not on some rampage here, just chronicling Kate's lies is all.

Looks like Kate's got those 20% off one item coupons that are a dime a dozen. BBB probably marks everything up 20% then mails out everyone those coupons.

The coupons out is a bit odd. Very rarely I might pull out my list and coupons as I walk into the store I guess. My method with coupons is when I find the item I put the coupon securely under it in the cart. It helps me see what coupons I have left and what items I still need to find and as I unload things I can hand over the coupon.

When I was in school, in the 80's and early 90's, it was the CHILD'S responsibility to see the teacher about any schoolwork missed. I can remember doing this as early as 5th grade, and probably did so even earlier. It didn't matter if you were gone one day or a couple of weeks, you had to see the teacher your first day back for your missed assignments, and if you didn't return them in the allotted time, you got a zero for that work. It was made clear to us that keeping up with our assignments was OUR responsibility, not the teacher's.

I also would have been really mad if one of my classmates got special treatment, while I had to do the extra work to catch up. That's really unfair, among other things.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I generally thought one made this so-called bucket list at the end of one's life or in retirement when you have the money to travel and do all the things you didn't do or were unable to do extensively because you were working and raising a family. Kate's 36...why does she need to create a bucket list now? Could it be fear of growing old here, huh? Or is this while she has the money rolling in?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 145

We used to have our music lessons staggered so we'd have to miss class. I heard a lot of schools don't do this anymore. I'm still kind of annoyed about that. I don't get why music is treated as something where if you want to do it you'll get screwed by missing bits and pieces of other classes. It was hard to miss class and some teachers weren't sympathetic. I had to either stay after school to make it up or come during lunch or someone make it up. It definitely taught me missing class can be more trouble than it's worth. There are teachers out there with zero sympathy for this kind of thing, that's for sure.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 146

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought flaunting your bucket list many of which you've already checked off, was considered tacky and insensitive in this economy.

My aunt and uncle just came back from Europe and I was quizzing them all about it at the wedding this weekend since I love that kind of thing. But I could tell they were really holding back, there was this sense of feeling uncomfortable talking about it around people. When I was in jr high and high school, with multiple teachers and no way for her to stay on top of every little thing, I rebelled and stopped trying. I was still doing fine, just not as well as SHE wanted. Mom blamed and harassed the teachers. Many of them took it out on me. I received some incredibly unfair treatment that was completely due to her actions. It sucked, but even as a kid I couldn't blame the teachers. And we were complete nobodies- I can't imagine what the G kids could potentially face if their teachers already have strong opinions/feelings about their mother.

Fidosmommy, the coupons were not only in her hand, there is a close-up in which you can actually READ what is on them. This series of photos surely took a little time to execute, and very obviously required the cooperation of the subject. She is seen entering and departing BOTH BBB and Target. The expression on her face is the trademark "Katie blank" in most of them; a slight smile emerges in a couple, but there is no doubt she knows the camera is there. There are NO other folks even caught in the background in any of the photos.

Anyone who could look at these pix and still believe these are candid shots by an unwanted pap is willfully burying his/her head in the sand. Wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that Steve was once again the roving photographer.

scrimped and saved for years,

I agree with what Admin. said about the Gosselin kids not valuing education, since Kate took them out of school for non-necessary trips. These kids already have a sense of entitlement, taught by their mother.

Mady called the man who was taking a picture of them on their rv trip a 'stupid man.' When told there were no servants to wait on them in the RV, one of the tups said,'yes we do, Steve.' I can just imagine them when they have to wait in line at school.

It's not their fault, it is what Kate has allowed them to do when they're out in public, because she thinks they are entitled to special treatment, always.Their teachers have probably heard that line already, 'we're Gosselins, we don't have to wait.'

You are thinking like a normal person who saves up for a trip to Disney and takes the kids there for their once in a life-time trip. This is not what Kate does, she pulls them out of school for a free trip to Australia or wherever, and the kids are having to miss school for no good reason.

You don't have to have kids to think I must go to Disney or my kids will lose out on something. That was a low blow in my opinion.I had 3 kids and we never took them, what a bad mother I am!

We could never afford it when they were little and it never bothered any of us-all my girls managed to grow up and live productive lives and are as happy as clams.Disney is highly over-rated.

My youngest daughter went when her band was asked to play in the Rose Bowl Parade, when she was in Gr.10. We had to scrimp and do bingos and sell tickets so our kids could all go. Parents went as chaperones and they all had a great time. The highlight was playing in the parade, the journey and not the destination, the wonderful trip with band friends, not Disney.

Kate has taken her kids on so many free trips, that they have no meaning anymore. They don't appreciate it, because it's just not that fun anymore for them. They would probably like to take a camping trip with Jon, who would enjoy it with them and it woud be a bonding, fun time for the kids, not Kate's idea of a fun trip, 'free.'

Why is this non factor person written about. She cuts coupons?I see she has a mani&pedi, diamonds, and driving a $50.000 dollar 2 seater car.I guess all the noise from her team of house cleaners, laundress, chef, garden crew, secretary, stylist, make up and hair stylist and she leaves to make herself look like she has no money ,by using coupons.I don't know why she doesn't tell the public that her 8 kids have full scholarships to the univ of penn. Can you imagine,8 kids and don't have to spend a penney on there college. My cousin works in her bank, and she said that if she knew she wouldn't be arrested, she would let the public know how (broke kate is.She said that ceo's have as much money as her.Kate was the first to tell(by the slip of her tongue)that she doesn't even pay for hair cuts, her clothes, the kids clothes, all her staff, ground crew etc.Lets see not even paying her electric bill, and making 16 million last year, you do the math.GO AWAY

Scrimped and saved for years, I clearly said pulling kids out for vacation WHENEVER THE MOOD STRUCK, i.e. many times, may lead to kids not valuing their commitments in the future. I never said ONE trip to Disney in third grade is going to mess them up for life, come on. I never made a sweeping statement, and your baseless comment about what I never said about my own personal life has nothing to do with it.

May I ask though, kids in third grade in most states are only required to be in school about 180 days out of the year of 365. What's the reason why vacations can't be scheduled on some of their 195 days off? Why not treat school like an important commitment from the start? Why is it fine and dandy to miss school in third grade, but when will it not be okay? When do you suddenly say to a child, now school is important now you have to go? There's a reason many schools have zero tolerance for vacations whether you are in kindergarten or a junior in high school prepping for college, this is by no means a wild out there opinion.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 161

Sorry, fuzzy math, 185 days off....still plenty of days for tons of fun on vacations for kids. Frankly, I don't know how most families could possibly fill all that time with vacations, it's too many days for that.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 162

Hey Jude, I never went to Disney as a child either. The first time I went I was an adult on a conference down there. It was fun, but I don't shed any tears for missing it prior to that. It's certainly not a requirement of childhood. My parents took us to a lot of other places all over the East Coast, we did a lot of historical places but they would always throw in a trip to Six Flags or a water park too, so it was a nice mix of learning and letting loose. I hadn't been to Disney, but by the time I graduated I had been to Washington D.C. four times.....and was fascinated by it so much I made political science part of my major.

All these little choices influence kids more than some parents realize.

Someone asked Kate if she went to college. She answered, "yes- diploma degree in nursing - RN." What a boldface liar. She NEVER went to college. She completed a nursing program at a hospital and received a RN dipoma. She never step foot in a college. Wow, the nerve of her.

In my opinion, Kate is an extremely poor representative of the nursing profession. However, I want to address her nursing education. I, too, am an original graduate of a Diploma nursing program. Yes, I went on to obtain my BSN and yes, I'm currently working on a Master's in Education but I am proud to be an original diploma grad!! Even if I hadn't chosen to pursue more education, I would have answered "yes" if asked if I went to college. When Kate's nursing education is disparaged, you are unintentionally knocking every diploma graduate out there. Honestly, there was a time - when diploma programs were more plentiful - that if you were a patient, you wanted your newly graduated RN to be from a diploma program rather than a Bachelor's program. I was in the hospital working along side nurses (with my instructor!) 3 out of 5 days a week my last year there. Diploma,Associate Degree and Bachelor's degree nursing graduates all take the SAME state exam to be licensed. I agree that I would shudder if I opened my eyes to see Kate at my bedside in scrubs, but please stop insulting (albeit, unintentionally!) all the competent nurses that graduated from her program! :)

Absolutely correct. And I never disparage those who received their RN through a hospital diploma program. I disparage and call out LIARS (i.e., Kate) who say they went to college to get that license when it is simply NOT TRUE. One of my best friends (who is actually the same age as my daughter) is currently going to college full-time to get her R.N., as well as working part-time filling in at a law firm, and I'm very proud of her, because she's the sole support of two small children. So, once again, my problem is not with R.N.'s receiving a hospital diploma, but with LIARS. I have zero tolerance for a liar.

Kate doesn't care all that much about education, this school to her is about status. If they happen to learn something, that is just a side effect. Education goes out the window when money and trips come along, she could care less.

-------------------
Good point. She thinks the kids would have been "acting" forever. That they may have finally had a set tutor or something someday on a set, I don't know. She said it herself many times, that she wanted those kids & that damn show to go on & on. How many times can you pull a kid out of school without them falling behind?

Maybe that is why the 2 younger kids got into so much trouble. It had nothing to do w/ anger & bullying (I know it did but hear me out), but had something to do w/ the fact that they just could not keep up & they finally just lost it. Many children take their frustrations out in diferent ways, & maybe they felt like they weren't getting the direction they needed, or guidance, education wise. I don't know. Kate just does not seem to care about that these kids & the education they need, or she didn't anyway. Now that the show is finally over, maybe things will change. Pulling kids out of school WITHOUT a tutor is just irresponsible, while filming all over the country for one's own benefit.

It would be like me saying to my son; "OK, I'm pulling you out of school for 2 1/2 weeks to drive cross-country. Take care of your own school homework. It's not MY problem!" I just get the feeling that Kate is like that. She just passes it off to someone else. It is NEVER her fault. And her kids suffer. Always. Ultimately. And she never realizes it. And she never will.

It's ALL ABOUT HER.

Anyway, when I originally obtained my nursing diploma (in the 70's)you spent a year at college--community or 4 year university--doing a year of pre-requisites before entering the nursing school program. Were all of Katie Irene's pre-requisites done within the nursing school? That seems so strange. Must be Kate Speak again.

Love the Disney conversation.

Not to get into a Disney debate, but I don't see how anyone can say Disney is "over-rated." It's a great vacation for a family. There really is nothing like Disney World, in my opinion. It's a magical place and IF you can afford to go it can be a great vacation if done right.

There's also nothing wrong with NOT taking your children to Disney World if you can't. Some people just can't. I personally would love to see every child get to go to Disney World at least once in their lifetime if it's something they'd like to do. I went once to Disney as a child and I was so young I only remember the Small World ride. Our other family vacations were to Niagara Falls, upstate NY, etc. We loved those vacations.

Not wanting to wait on hour long lines in Disney World during the busy season is not teaching your child entitlement. We still wait on line when there is a line, just a shorter wait. We don't pass others and go to the front of the line. I've never seen that done in Disney World unless the person is handicapped or being treated by Make a Wish (which is great).

Educational trips are great, too. Visiting museums and aquariums and national landmarks make great vacations. We do those, too. Why does it seem that some feel you must do just one or the other?

I don't think you can compare an average family taking their children out of school for a week to go on a family vacation the same as taking them out randomly to travel throughout the school year or to film a show or even go to the mall for a day. Big difference in my opinion.

I think what's being said is that Disney is not so wonderful that it justifies taking kids out of school.

There are many people who feel Disney is overcrowded and manufactured and overpriced and misleading, but that's not really the point. Take your kids where you want to take your kids, but in an age where most schools give you long summer breaks, winter breaks, spring breaks, ski breaks, fall breaks, staggered at all different times depending on the school, I'm not buying the excuse kids must be pulled out of school for Disney.

Here's an interesting article about Disney's history of using sweat shop labor: http://www.anomalies-unlimited.com/Disney/Labor.html

I also think their "internship" program is a total scam. I had some friends who did it and the rest of us were pleading with them not to. Disney comes to college campuses and target kids in acting programs claiming they can get a big break at Disney with an unpaid or minimum wage summer job dressing up as Mickey Mouse. This is not acting, this rarely if ever leads to other great acting jobs, it is not a "resume booster." It is a way to provide cheap labor during the crowded summer months while misleading kids into thinking they are furthering their careers. It is a scam.

It's not at the top of my list of places I have to go much less pull kids out of school for, but like I said, that's not the point.

I have to say I have great admiration for nurses. I wish I had the stomach for it. What a fulfilling occupation. I can see where you RN's are upset with Kate, after all, she doesn't want to return to "mediocre" work. With all the money she made from TLC, if she truly loved nursing, she'd go back to school (and she could pay for it in cash) to continue in medicine. What a wonderful opportunity. But nope. Too lazy. Too self-centered. Makes you wonder why she ever chose nursing in the first place? I'd say she was husband hunting.

We have a close friend that would get so irate talking about taking children out of school for vacation. Before he had children he swore he would NEVER take his children out of school just to go on vacation. (He's an engineer and already decided his unborn son was also going to be an engineer. Whatever.) Anyway...

Now he has children. Guess what he's doing in December? Taking them out for a week from school to go to Disney World. We laughed at him.

A lot of families do it. The last time my husband and I took our girls to Disney we noticed a lot of other children there. Our running joke was "What are all these kids doing here? Shouldn't they be in school?"

I'm not trying to convince anyone else that taking your children out of school for a family vacation is the right thing to do. Actually, I hope no one else does it... guarantees less people in Disney when we go! ;)

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 176

Yup a lot of families do it. A lot more families don't do it and will never do it or amusement parks would be full all year round.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 177

It bothers me the extra burden this puts on teachers, too. If your kid has special needs don't you think the teachers' time would be better served with them rather than helping some kid catch up who's been at an amusement park all week?

Imagine if every kid in the class spent one week on vacation. The teacher would spend pretty much every week trying to catch someone up. It's not fair on them or the other students. This is how I see Kate, she thinks her family is special and she has no regard for anyone else and how her choices affect others.

When Katie uses the words 'organize' and 'mastermind', she means 'tell others what to do.' At that hour, she has no one available to order around. She certainly does not ever actually DO anything herself, except probably wipe herself and I am not so sure about that either.

I completely agree with your sediments here (hehe) but I dont think Kate considers her family as special. She considers HERSELF special and not only should the TEACHERS accomodate her decisions and choices regarding work missed, but the CHILDREN must also. (Because she's "in charge and that is never going to change".) I think the only reason she sort of cares is because she doesnt want to be bothered with being called on the carpet by the school about any missed school work, poor grades, or poor behavior. At this young age, the school considers her accountable for the children's problems and she is much too busy and exhausted for that.

I do think she demands good grades from the kids, but if there were no formal grading system, she wouldn't care less whether or not they were actually learning what is needed. As long as there is a way they can earn their keep and her's, school is just a way to get rid of them for 9 hours a day. If they do well, she crows it is all due to her presence in the universe, if they do poorly it is someone else's fault and she is annoyed that she has to address it any way.

Not to belabor the point, but taking the children out of school for 'vacation' is not always that clear cut. The few times we did that it was always in conjunction with my husband attending a conference connected to his profession. We did not wake up and say 'oh let's plan a family vacation during the school year'. And when we did go to Disney World, we also went to the Space Center. Our trip to D.C. involved many museums. And we did this occasionally. Travel is educational; we probably would not have made those trips because the time my husband took from his medical practice was rare. So not always black and white; as I also said, the trips ended when the school work got more difficult.

And as I returned to the work force in education, I did get the other perspective of having to contend with children whose parents had them out of school not infrequently. K8 is one of those cavalier parents; it's a shame that her children got so little knowledge about the places they have had the opportunity to see in their travels. Also a shame that there is always friction with her, so these trips are not even a truly family bonding experience. My kids may complain today, but the memories that they have from the time we were able to spend together on the road are priceless. Of course we did not travel with "servants".

All this Disney vacation stuff is very timely; I am taking my kids out of school in 12 days to go to Disney. They are extremely good students (straight A's all the way) and I take their education very seriously. So my reason for going during the school year is primarily cost. A Disney vacation during school holidays is nearly twice as expensive as during the school year. I literally would not be unable to do this trip if I had to go during a holiday, winter or spring break. The very end of summer is a cheaper time to go, but with the very real possibility of hurricanes and sweltering heat and humidity, I'm not willing to chance a ruined trip due to weather. Teachers are made aware of our plans way in advance. I do not expect work packages, but when one is provided my kids absolutely complete everything. Upon returning, it is MY responsibility to help the kids catch up. BTW my kids are in 5 and 7 grades and I do not take them out for vacation every year; this is 3rd time, since preschool.
I will say, if my kids struggled with their school work I would not take them out for a week (maybe a long weekend), and I also know that once high school hits taking them out is not an option.
Yes, I feel guilt and pretty inane for trading a week's worth of education for furry costumes and cheesy rides; but we worked and saved for a long time and deserve to get away when we can afford to do so.

Girl Scouts vs Reality TV said... 194

Girl Scouts of the USA is warning its legions ... reality television shows are turning young women into "mean girls."

The Girl Scouts Research Institute conducted a study on reality TV ... and concluded, "teen girls who regularly view reality TV accept and expect a higher level of drama, aggression, and bullying in their own lives, and measure their worth primarily by their physical appearance."

A rep for the Institute also noted that reality TV shows "more frequently portrays girls and women in competition with one another rather than in support or collaboration. This perpetuates a 'mean-girl' stereotype and normalizes this behavior among girls."

The Girl Scouts did not name any of the shows involved in their study.

But it wasn't all bad news ... the GSRI says 68% of girls surveyed agree reality shows "make me think I can achieve anything in life" and 48% believe they "help me realize there are people out there like me."

The Girl Scouts note, "We don't want girls to avoid reality TV, but want them, along with their parents, to know what they are getting into when they watch it."

There are many variables that affect a family's decision about when they can take a vacation. Prior commitments, familial obligations, work considerations, and monetary concerns usually dictate when vacations can occur, and this means that sometimes kids may miss some school.

Many people in the workforce must take vacations when their employers tell them they can. For example, many companies close down completely around Christmas time to save company money. Unfortunately, travel prices are so high at that time of year that many families can't afford to take vacations then. If vacation time is based on seniority, then some people will find themselves stuck with vacation time in the middle of February or early June, when school is in session.

The key is to not abuse the situation. This means that parents must take personal responsibility for making sure that children 1) are made to understand that school is a priority even though life circumstances may cause them to miss days at times; 2) make up any missed work; 3) are aware that it is their responsibility, not any teacher's, to put forth the effort to perform well in school.

TLC's profits said... 199

Sleuths out there - has it been documented anywhere how much TLC made from the show since its first episode?
************

This is the only info I'm aware of and even this is disputed by various sources. The interview took place @ the time of Jon's appearance on Larry King Live when he said they were paid $22,500 per episode.

"I've been out there for 40 years and I don't know any judge in any jurisdiction that's going to say to a father, who doesn't believe that his children are being handled properly in this sort of production, let the kids keep reduce producing because TLC is making $186 million," said Heller.

"They're under direction and this is their argument. But, clearly, this is production. Remember, TLC made $186 million, rumor has it, for the quarter, as attributable to the Jon & Kate show."

After King read a statement from TLC in which they expressed "contractual right to retitle the show," he asked Heller where he got the $186 million figure from.

"This was reported in a lot of journals. It was a compilation that was done by people that track revenues. And I read it, frankly, in The New York Post. And the story said that the majority of that revenue was attributed to the Jon & Kate Plus 8 program," Heller said in an apparent reference to an August 5 report about the second quarter 2009 profit of TLC's Discovery Communications parent company. I thought for sure I read the tweet and she clearly said it was too expensive ?? I went back looking for it and couldn't find it anywhere. Does anyone else remember this?

*************

I finally found it. You were right -- Kate did say gymnastics was too expensive. The tweets took place in April when the AUS and NZ episodes were airing.

These posts are from Realitytvkids.com.

The poor kid who raised the gymnastics issue has apologized to Kate.
