The new season of 19 Kids and Counting promises to deliver lots of highs: tree planting, baby names, corn maize, music. And some incredible lows--the miscarriage of the Duggar's twentieth child.
Last night's season premiere featured Ma and Pa Duggar worried when the doctor couldn't find their baby's heartbeat. False alarm--she finally found it. But the doomed pregnancy, according to previews, will be chronicled in its entirety, including the moment when they find out the horrible news, followed by the baby's funeral. American's latest most exploited family has lost all sense of decency and boundaries. Wrote entertainment writer and recapper Richard Lawson, "We like to be horrified by 19 Kids and Counting, but not like that." Lawson went on to write:
"The producers presumably had discussions about how to best handle this situation, and it seems they've chosen the most sensationalistic way rather than the most sensitive. I was thinking.....suppose Kate does fade into oblivion in a couple of years. Suppose she comes to terms with that. Unfortunately, she will never have privacy. Ever. People will always want to know what is going on with those kids. It is very sad to think that they will never have privacy in their lives. Josh is an adult and can protect himself, however, it sounds to me like he did not get his fair share of what he made as a child when he couldn't protect himself. I don't understand why any adult who has worked so much of their childhood claims to be struggling financially. Well, I understand how this happens, but it's shameful. How much money has TLC made off the Duggars and how can they feel good about filming episodes about Josh struggling when they know fell well how much Josh has worked FOR them? I don't see that Josh has squandered his money. He lives in a small house and works a normal job. What happened was either TLC never paid him adequately, or his parents never gave him his fair cut. Or both. Both are horrible. Of those 19 kids they're not all going to be robots, someone at some point is going to speak up. I checked IMDB and I was shocked by this. The first TLC Duggar special was NINE years ago. Josh Duggar has been working since he was 14 years old. Where is this young man's money??? This morning in Chesterfield, NJ, a school bus was hit by a dump truck causing it to slam into a telephone pole. One precious 11-year-old girl was killed, and her two sisters (yes, triplets) were airlifted to the hospital where they remain in critical condition. Their father is a New Jersey state trooper. Another 11-year-old boy is also in critical condition. Other children were seriously injured.
Please keep these families in your prayers (if you pray), or send positive thoughts to help them handle their grief.
Tragedies like this should remind everyone, despite our ideological differences, of what is really important. Every single child deserves unconditional love, respect and attention. Every single second we have with our children is a gift.

I wasn't sure when I posted before if it was ok to put up other websites or blogs. The site that has researched the Duggars is freejinger . It now has expanded to discuss other families like the Duggars as well as religion in general. There are people who have met the Duggars, there are ATI/quiverful(some are active & inactive which leads to livey discussions). A few weeks ago someone dug up some of Josh's tax records from the carlot. Then the age old question "Does JimBob used the house tax free since they home church and he is legal pastor" came up. They actually do not but he had a 4.5 million lean(ironic for those that are debt free) that he paid off last year in a lump sum. Lots of money transfering, cars, homes, and land. Remember the show is NOT about money to the Duggars it is a ministry for them(Im sure the money has helped but they want to spread the word more then anything).
Josh does not own that house. It is his grandmother's house. Grandma also owns Amy's mom's house. If you check out Josh's instagram he has only worked 1 day in the last 6 weeks. The family has been touring with the Santorum campaign. Josh instagram is upsetting to alot of people (it is more like a 14 year old boy getting his first taste of freedom) lots of bragging, pictures of food(he literally eats out once a day fast food), worst is the jokes about handicapped kids. Anna's family has had 2 kids leave ATI lifestyle and they are shunned. Her one sister who left the lifestyle Suze was not allowed to come to her baby shower last year. It was sad how her sister who is leading a decent christain lifestyle(but has a job & wears jeans) was shunned. It is a clear message though leave the lifestyle, lose your family. There is a very interesting blog razingruth that is a girl who left ATI/quiverful family she was from AR as well and had to basically escape & about her having to "learn to live in the real world", she had been so sheltered & the ATI education is so lacking.
I used to think the Duugars were saints compared to Kate. I studied about religion years ago as an undergrad and got stucked into to reading all the stories of people leading the same lifestyle as the Duggars on freejinger. I now can't believe how sugar coated TLC has made the Duggars. Luckily people have screenshots of old Duggar website. They openly endorsed the controversial Pearls until recently(Josh & Anna still have a link on there website and Michael is being blanket trained in a recent video on the TLC extras video clips). Kate's "Love Is" blog is once again dissing her boys. She names each of her 5 girls by name. But when it comes to her boys, she writes, "having three boys who, by nature, know how to help their mom around the house. They NEVER complain about feeding the chickens or taking the trash out…and help SO much!" It makes me so mad. Alexis got named for kissing the dog. Leah and Hannah got named for asking Kate how they can help her. But she can't bother to name her boys. It is so biased. And of course, the boys do the grunt work...feeding the chickens and the dog. She doesn't even call them "my boys" instead she writes, "having three boys". She really does favor the girls and I think Kate doesn't even realize her favoritism. Way to go Kate.

I agree. Taylor Armstrong is a sociopath
and milking her husband's death for attention and money. She can't keep her stories straight and I was glad when Brandi called her on writing her book "in a hot minute" after her husband's suicide. Her book basically demonizes Russell, yet she claims all she cares about is her daughter Kennedy. I do feel sorry for her daughter. Taylor is one twisted, selfish, fame seeker, at best. Cammie - that was a great synopsis. Anyone who takes the time to research the reality behind the sanitized "brand" TLC is presenting will be quite shocked. The support of the Pearl's methods is particularly disturbing. Blanket training, infant abuse and the recommendation to buy 1/4 inch plumbing line to hit the kids with will turn your stomach. I hate the moniker "reality tv". Child exploitation wrapped up in a pretty bow is still exploitation. I just feel so bad for all of the kids who will have to deal with this forever.
If an adult wants to "cozy" up to his car and tell it to the world, hey... have at it, but, the kids, leave them out of it! I've felt this way since the nanny shows and wife swap - even if it is only a one time appearance, what kid would want those kinds of private upsets out there forever? This whole genre can not go away fast enough for me.

Most people here don't want to see these kids--we want them to just be able to live their lives. But when Kate shoves them down people's throats yes we comment about it. My take on what she said was, that she used Jon to get what "SHE wanted'..she never wanted a husband, only kids. That is further proven with stories documenting, that even as a young teenager, she read books on multiples.

Sadly, Kate's narcissisim prevents her from regretting anything. This fame has cost her her relationship with extended family, her friends, her marriage, 2 children were expelled from Kindergarten and an editor for the show is an alleged child pornagrapher. If TLC called her today and said they wanted to film the show again she'd say yes in a red hot minute. She only cares about money, not the fallout from getting it.
Unless she comes to terms with her condition and receives some intense therapy, she will be this way for the rest of her life. She will never regret selling her kids out because it gave the fame & fortune she has always felt she was entitled to. It sounds like she didn't grow up poor, but with three other siblings, money was probably tight. She exudes resentment of her childhood and has stated many times how important she thinks it is for her kids to live in that konpound.
I think she is going to spend the rest of her life being bitter and angry that her television career ended. Her narcissism has prevented her from accepting the constructive criticisim she surely has been given over the years as to how to be a more likable personality. She likes herself just the way she is and if I had to guess, I bet she thinks that celebrities who are relatable, generous, easygoing and kind to everyone (even the mediocre makeup person) are chumps.
As far as her obsessive control issues, we all know this is not going to work with pre-teens and teens. My 3 boys range from 13 to almost 19. When I hear stories about kids from their school who have gotten in trouble, it is almost always the kids of parents who have told me at one time or another how super strict they are. Without fail, these lockdown type rules always result in kids sneaking out windows, lying about who they are with & where they are and gravitating towards dating a "bad" girl or boy. In my own family, I have a cousin my age whom my aunt ruled & regulated to no end. Her attempts to mold my cousin into a perfect preppy, cheerleading princess resulted in a brooding, black wearing, heavily pierced recluse, who to this day is a very troubled adult. Appearances were/are very important to my aunt and the more she nagged my cousin to look a certain way, the more purple or green my cousin's hair became and two more body parts got pierced. We all know Kate is obsessed with appearance and perfection. The food control is an alarming sign. I have grave concerns for the kids teen years and hope the eight make it out ok with the help of their father and each other.
Another thought...she can't afford socks, yet she can afford 6 kids in braces AT THE SAME TIME..personally, I don't think braces on kids that young serves it's purpose..most of these kids have to have braces again later during their early teenage years.
It may also stem from her being unable to have braces of her own until she married jon (which, i am sure, her father-in-law provided free of charge).
Perhaps her fans can contribute to an account to pay for all these braces.....the same fans who probably can't afford it for their own children.
I really can't understand how her fans spend their money on their queen's children, while that money would be better spend on their own..how about putting that money in a college fun for their own kids? I remember my dentist saying it was best to wait until most of the major baby teeth had fallen out before braces. Around 11-12 or so.
Kate hasn't said all six need braces or that they need them right now. She only tweeted the six need to see the orthodontist.

I never noticed their teeth were that bad. I think she's exaggerating for maximumsympathy grifting. Maybe one or two need to see them to consult about future dental work.
There is something called 'early intervention orthodontics' where treatment is started as early as age 7.
Usually it's just a retainer type appliance to help shape/enlarge/space the growing teeth in the jaw.
Sometimes it involves the early pulling of baby teeth to allow space for the adult teeth to come in.
In some/many cases, this early intervention treatment means the kids don't have to have braces later, or if they do the length of time in braces is lessened.
Our son had this early intervention. Two baby teeth were pulled at age 7, a retainer was worn at night and when he got braces at age 11 he only had to wear them for 11 months.
My thought - kart having all 6 plus didn't one of the twins also have orthodontics - that's going to pinch her pocketbook!
They probably need to go for a consultation to lay out a treatment plan for the future, unless they have an issue like a crossbite (which my eldest had) where one or more of the lower teeth are in front of an upper tooth. This needs to be corrected because it can damage the enamel. My kids started wearing braces in middle school and were out of them by the time they entered high school or in their freshman year.

The Amish have their rumspringa, or running around, a time during adolescence (usually at 16) when they are free to explore the world, adapt to new social situations, and even leave their community. They either come back into the church for baptism, or leave the church, deciding not to live as Amish. It's their way of life, their custom, their tradition, but it is not observed by all of the Amish sects.
I'm not even sure that the Duggars allow that.

I don't think there's much arguing that braces aren't going to be expensive. Dental insurance doesn't usually cover braces--you have to pay for extra orthodontist insurance and any plan I've ever been under it's not cheap. As in hundreds of dollars extra a month. Even with a sibling discount it's not going to be cheap. Insurance isn't free, you still have to pay your premiums.
The point is, this is her problem. She should have thought of this before having this many kids. She probably thought she could grift from Jon's dad forever.

I've had 4 kids in braces (the last is in them now). We began seeing the orthodontist at least 3 years prior to them getting braces so that the orthodontist could keep an eye on their growth and baby tooth loss. Typically, we were on a once-a-year recall. We paid nothing until treatment began.
We had dental insurance with orthodontist coverage, but it only covered a SMALL portion of the cost. For our first child (who is now 30), we paid about $2500. Our 2nd & 3rd children were over $3500 (they are now 22 & 23, had braces at the same time and received only a 2% reduction in cost for multi-children) and now, with our 4th child, the cost is $6700!
Kate's grifting will be heavy-duty once the orthodontist quotes her a price... perhaps she should forgo her mani/pedi's, tanning, etc. (That won't happen)

I completely agree, oalthough the fans choose to ignore the reality of Kate. She was sending out videos to TLC of herself pregnant with six before they were ever born. Her behavior then and now indicates it is ALL about HER being in the spotlight, and trying to make money from her kids.

I had that same question, why are they getting braces so young? All six of them?
I remember my dentist saying it was best to wait until most of the major baby teeth had fallen out before braces. Around 11-12 or so.

Exactly. Odds are only some of them will need major work, a few minor, and a few perhaps only something little or nothing at all and likely not all at the same time. If I recall Cara never had dental work that we saw. They are not all the same kids with the same needs as Kate so constantly wants us to think.

You don't say one kid needs braces if you want maximum donations, you exaggerate and make it seem like all six will be wearing head gear all at the same time and if no one helps pay for it it will never come off!

Yes, ortho work will be a large chunk of change, a bill I am sure she thought her ongoing career with TLC would fund. I was slow on the uptake but I definitely see it now. I like how the other ladies gently catch her in her lies in that nice tone of theirs....wait didn't you say your jaw was broken? Here's my problem with Taylor. A woman in a DV relationship should feel free to tell her story without people wondering if she's LYING. But because of her, she gives some of these women a bad name and makes people skeptical when maybe they shouldn't be. It is despicable to lie about a man hurting you and an insult to women who truly have been hurt in DV relationships, and even moreso when that man is dead.
Since Jon is the only one really working full time here, I have a feeling the kids are indeed on his insurance plan. But that's a lot for Jon to pay on his own especially if he gets the full works dental package with braces. But of course, no gratitude from Kate or credit to him for his part. She has never once expressed gratitude at how he supports the kids--apparently so much she doesn't even have to work and can tweet on her ass all day. Looks like now that Kate is no longer traveling non-stop, show ended, and she ACTUALLY has to be a mom of eight, minus the nannies. She took credit for this for years while she did not actually do the work with the kids, via hired help.
I do think Steve or her other manager told her to stop posting after 9pm, as the late wine tweets were becoming an issue.
Usually IF you have ortho coverage, it only covers a percentage of the ortho work.
My daughter needed an expander for a while and then braces top and bottom and then permanent retainers on the top front and bottom front and MY part ended up being about $6000 after the ortho insurance paid their part. That was one kid.
Being on the other end of the raising kids gig, I've often looked at these people having multiples thinking, "You don't EVEN know." Yes, diapers are very expensive, times however many kids you have. Yes, formula is expensive.
But just wait until you get to the real big ticket items. Kate is JUST starting to get there. All their clothes are bigger and more expensive and they aren't necessarily all happy with clearance specials at Target anymore. They eat more (well, normal kids do--Kate's undernourished eight don't seem to be allowed to eat much). There are all kinds of expenses connected to school, even when they don't go to a private school! Then you have braces, graphing calculators (WHEW THOSE ARE EXPENSIVE!), SAT test fees, you name it.
And yes, she was clearly grifting for money, sympathy, whatever she can get. She's shameless.
As to the person who asked if I don't feel guilt when looking at pics of the kids:
I don't look at pics of the kids. I barely bother to look at the pics of her pathetic little meals she serves them. I got her latest blog entry the other day and spent just enough time on her lame website to hit copy and paste and then got off. And that's the first and only time I've ever done that.
I rarely ever mention the kids by name, and when I do, I use initials. In fact, I STILL don't know which tup is which as far as who the boys are and who the girls are and I doubt I can list all their names. I never learned them all.
I'm not interested in the kids for my own personal curiosity. I know what kids are like. I have one, and I was a teacher for years.
I discuss Kate and her child exploiting, shameless grifting ways.
So yeah, no pangs of guilt. Why would I feel that way?
And you'll note in the caricature header at the top, the kids aren't even depicted below their hairline. I say good. I wouldn't mind if they and Jon were removed altogether.

Hey Kate, my husband and I had braces together a few years ago and guess what? Our lovely orthodontist did not give us a discount based on that. AND the dental insurance covered a very minimal amount. It did not cover extras like retainers either. At a few hundred a pop, they don't come cheap.
Stupid cow. Stop publishing everything about your kids' lives to garner sympathy/attention for yourself, and let them have their privacy, just once!
Braces at age 7? Whatever happened to letting their mouths grow a while and see if the teeth get in better alignment. They haven't had the adult teeth that long and will be losing a few more yet in years to come. (I trust some dentists about as much as car salesmen- some like to do alot more than I think is necessary to get my money)
I can understand an ortho giving a mult-child discount- that is very common. Most orthodontia isn't covered with dental insurance and when it is- it's about 50%. If there is a college nearby that has an ortho school- braces are substantially discounted. I can't imagine an ortho completely comping this- they would lose a lot of money and time! Geesh- I loathe this "woman"...

As for wearing braces at an early age, I ask my dentist a couple of years ago about that. He said, once all permanent teeth are in, and a child is in need of braces, they will put them in ASAP. They no longer wait till you are in your teens. I was 5 when I lost the last of my baby teeth, I would have by todays standard, a candidate for early braces, but they did not do that back then in the 60's, by time I was a teen, I did not want to go through the pain. In my case I would have had to have 2 teeth pulled, when I was 19 I had 4 impacked wisedom teeth removed, now cause of those wisdom teeth the last molars root, grew into an s shape and the tooth to be slightly sideways. I have way too many teeth for my mouth. I have a about 3 crowned molars(2 cause they were cracked, could not put a filling in, the other had a cavaity by the root ), the rest are my own teeth.
And yes, Kate was fishing for a paps.
The exploitation of children, living or deceased, needs to stop. My patience is very short with all of this on TLC. No family needs money that badly that they must be a part of this distasteful scene.

Little did anyone know - except maybe Jon - that underneath that mediocre exterior a greedy attention whore was waiting to be noticed. Dental insurance rarely covers ortho, and if it does, it doesn't pay much.
What galls me to no end is that this shrew thinks people owe her everything. I seemed to recall in the early yrs when she cried poor, it was written somewhere that she expected family, friends, church members, etc., to pay her bills..when all that time Jon had a trust acct given to him by his father. When questioned why they didn't use that for their expenses, Kate was on record saying that was 'their' money, and shouldn't be used to pay household bills.
A while back in a tabloid, she is quoted as saying, "I will do whatever it takes to pay MY KID"s bills....since when do kids have bills???

Grifting is a one-track way for people like Kate. I've got to share this story, it's a little off topic, so bear with me. (This is a TRUE story, I know this lady and heard it from her first-hand):
Not too long ago,she and her husband were watching one of those evangelist programs, there were spouting the 'send us 1,000 seed money, and it will be returned to you 100 times over' spiel...so, she got up, went to the phone and called them. The guy on the other end asked how she wanted to pay for her 1,000 dollar seed money, and she said "no, I don't want to send you 1,000 dollars, I want your ministry to contribute 1,000 dollars to our mission work program (they were missionaries to Belize for almost 30 yrs)...the guy on the phone's response? (and I Quote): "Lady, it doesn't work that way."
Can you believe it? This guy is just like Kate...it only works one way, and it all goes TO kate, not FROM kate.

That was the same time she tried to grift some bolt on boobs. As I recall, the doctor said she just needed a good bra and we all know how that turned out, although they look sort of floppy and saggy now. Give it a few years and she'll be able to fling those puppies over her shoulder.
Hopefully, by the time the kids actually need their braces, she will have long been forgotten by her superfans and will not be able to grift monetary assistance from them.

I think the travel agent, Cindy Cardella, is getting tired and punchy from tweeting about the cruise. The last 3 tweets she made about it are to @kateplus8, leaving out the "my". So those tweets are being sent to an inactive, fake account. Good job, Cindy.
The one prior to those three and sent to the right account said to "join Kate, Mady and Cara,etc.". That makes me angry that now the travel agent is also using the twins names in her tweets to draw in people. Does she really think that people who don't want to fork over money for cruise just to see Kate, are now going to rush to book it because the twins are going?

It's called grasping for straws, and what she doesn't realize is that the sheeple don't give two hoots about the kids. It's all about their idol, their girl crush, or whatever you want to call her.

My daughter is currently in braces (since the fall). I have dental insurance and an ortho plan (which is $11.00 extra bi-wkly). It covers $1500 of the total ortho plan (I think they call it lifetime), the rest (including the retainers) are all on us.

New kitchen cabinets & Fridge. FREE ( Didn't she sell the old one's to Carla)? while she was vacationing at Bald Head, NC (FREE)because she didn't want to see the mess.

Yrs later, TLC gave her veneers. Her stupid fans don't even know her teeth aren't genuine.

I'm curious about the psychological impact of all that. At what point do you simply become conditioned to expect everything for free, and lose all sense of how the world normally works i.e. work hard, save hard, spend to get the things you want. Kate skips the first two and just gets the third.
Also in that same vein, part of the fun of having things is working for them. There have been studies about how the time in a vacation when people feel the most satisfied is not on the vacation or even after the vacation, but BEFORE the vacation when they are planning and saving. Kate is missing a really crucial part of the process of getting stuff that leaves a person feeling full and satisfied.
And it also says a lot for her fans, who seem to have no problem with Kate tweeting to them, rather than giving her daughters her undivided attention while playing a game with them.

She can start a non-profit with the purpose of educating people of the need for braces and distributing funds to the needy. The non-profit would pay Kate's travel expenses to educate the world about the importance of early orthodontic intervention. And then, of course, the charity would name its one and only recipient of donations---of course that would be Kate.

I think that's the place I went for my braces. What I am thinking of is there and at most orthodontist offices, the children are supposed to take responsibility during checkups. The child checks in, is called back alone, and gets the braces adjusted. My mother was only called back if there was a problem. Otherwise they don't want the parents back there. It's the same way now at the office my niece goes to. How do you think Kate will feel giving up that control?

But woman somehow finds a way to continue to invoke the kids without actually having to be bothered to involve the kids and continues to grift more trips and freebies. Woman uses fans to make even more money not only directly by them sending her freebies or paying for things like a cruise with her, but also, enlist other troops to do the same. Kate is now at the point where she has to do next to NOTHING, her army does it for her.

Innocent ortho has no idea this woman is a millionaire who has and continues to make millions off her kids, who lives in a McMansion gets the majority of her life for free gets a nice hefty child support check each month and is happy to spend thousands on herself before she will ever fork over one cent for her children's braces.

Plus a local photo studio did a bunch of photo shoots for them -- the old black and whites from the early show opening and one in the fall at Beth's house. And Giant gave her gift cards for food when the six were small.
The way I interpret Kate's tweet is that the dentist said the kids needed to see an orthodontist, but not that they need braces. I found an article about when a child should see an orthodontist. This is a snippet from that article:

To me it seems the kids are just going to be evaluated, not that they need braces. But of course, the way Kate exaggerates and says "life is about to get real crazy", I guess I can understand that assumption.

I think Mady had braces pretty young, 8 or 9 or so? The tups are almost 8. THis might be one of the early intervention dentists that other people were mentioning. Are there are studies on whether this early intervention movement actually works? How do you prove it was the early intervention and not just natural growth and change? Having had a dentist I thought was very scammy, who constantly pushed Invisalign every single appointment even though there is virtually nothing wrong with my teeth anyone would notice (and now one who is not like that at all I'm much happier with) I'm pretty sensitive to some of this up-sell stuff. Read up on the Invisalign scam by the way. A GREAT product but one that is being pushed on people who DON'T need it for thousands more than braces and one being pushed by dentists NOT TRAINED in ortho. I see a class action coming.
Either way I think Kate is thinking ahead. She only thinks ahead when it comes to freebies. She knows sooner or later some of them will need braces, so might as well start planting the seeds.

Regarding scammy dentists. We had one here who wanted to do jaw surgery on one of my kids, somewhere in the ballpark of $10,000. He pushed it to the nth degree. Thank goodness I went elsewhere for a second opinion. He was appalled that the other dentist even suggested it and said there were other options. Everything worked out fine without any kind of invasive procedure. You have to be so careful.
PA I don't think second opinions are encouraged enough when it comes to dental work but they should be! I think people think dental work is more exact than medicine but not if you have a used car salesman.
What was quoted as a $4300 invisalign treatment (and that's on the low end for that) was fixed by another dentist with a tiny bar behind my teeth I can't even feel. Final cost was a few hundred bucks or so.
Kate is now at the point where she has to do next to NOTHING, her army does it for her.

I have 2 kids in braces, 1 graduated from braces. Expensive, we have no orthodontic coverage (and even the extra plan we could purchase had a 3 year waiting period (had to be enrolled for 3 years before you could use the coverage - no adult orthodontic coverage at all), and it only covered a minimal amount.
In my experience, they check the kids at this age, there are a few things they could do to make later orthodontic work go easier - cross bite can be fixed, palate can be expanded, lip bumper can help lower teeth gain more space.
My kids all started braces later than their classmates - just due to how late we lost baby teeth.
Since were kind of all talking about ortho care, you know teeth and all that kind of stuff. So Kate's kids might need braces. Most normal parents find ways to get them for their kids.
Today, it broke my heart because I had to take my 9 year old cat for dental surgery. Three teeth fell out on their own, he got a infection, tarter build up and all that. Brushing a cat's teeth is pretty hard to begin with but I honestly feel so miserable for him. The amount of pain he was in and he never had any signs of it.
I'm a college student, a little broke on occasion aren't we all in those days? But someone I managed to pay the over $100 to have my cat healthy again.
I mean I know braces are a fortune, I had them as a kid, but come on, Kate, I know you have the money you just won't put in any actual effort to really honestly provide for the ones you love.
If I recall, he got rid of the cats when the twins came along for some reason and she got rid of a dog with no explanation whatsoever. That dog who swallowed the stuffed animal, never sure if she paid the bill for the poor animal, even if she did I'm sure she complained to high heaven about it!
Providing is doing the best within your ability to do just that, provide. It doesn't even have to be your child it could be your pet. Right now I feel like the worst pet owner in the world. Heaven help if her dog ever has a stroke, needs a hip replacement as it ages and she "doesn't have the money."

I would make sure that an assistant is present AT ALL TIMES. I have always "gone back" with my kids. I don't care if they don't want parents there. Remember the Delaware pediatrician?
Whoa. When I saw the dentist without my mom there, it was a busy dentist office with two or three chairs lined up and two or three other kids being worked on. I was by no means alone in a room with a dentist.
One incident of something happening that is so rare I don't think by any means outweighs the value in a kid taking responsibility for his or her own teeth and care and to have a little sense of independence. I was 13 or 14 years old at the time, the last thing I want is my mom hovering over me every second on the .00001% chance I might get molested.
With my orthdo doc my mum never came back but I was never alone either. Because there were at least 5 dentists chairs in a row back there, and nurse/assistants everywhere. Picking the two colours of the rubberbands (orange and black in October etc) and making sure I brushed well enough were the main concerns I had. That and the initial pain for about a day every time they were tightened.

Exactly. I think some parents watch too much news and it's sad how it scares people. It's one thing to put your kid in real danger, like having him crawl under a van or filming him for five years and broadcasting it to millions and having a child molester edit the film--but quite another not to let your child at least go sit for the dentist in a busy office on his own like a big boy or girl--speak up for himself about problem areas, learn to clean his teeth himself, etc. Because of what a scary world it is I think it's a real worry that we're raising completely dependent kids never without their mommies holding their wrists. Necessary, maybe, but to what end.

Actually if I recall I don't think parents were ALLOWED back at the dentist where I went. Maybe different offices have different policies. It's supposed to be a sanitary place. It's harder to do that with a lot of people back there with their purses and phones and jackets etc. It also can be scarier for kids to see mom watching them and maybe getting nervous or upset. Some kids will actually do better without Mom there pacing. Also, a dentist is trying to work on tiny mouths. That must be hard with parents there distracting them with questions and so on. I see why any dentist I've known doesn't allow it, and it never once crossed my mind there is a molestation risk. How can there be with lots of people around? You might as well go with your child to school and sit next to him in class if that's a worry.

It depends if it's a busy dentist's office or not. In a small town, there may not be a flock of assistants running around. In my case, there is one treatment room and one assistant at the time (I usually go after school, close to closing). I was in the waiting room, my child was with the dentist, and the assistant came out front to take a phone call about some insurance concerns. Then the light bulb went off. My child was alone with the dentist and we were new patients. I didn't know him. You can bet I went back there fast, and still do.
Call me paranoid, but I'd rather be paranoid on the side of caution. These are our kids!

Considering the fact that this same orthodontist (not dentist-just FYI) had no problem being filmed, and having her office and staff filmed for an episode with Mady and Cara, I'm going to have to disagree that the tweet was deplorable,outrageous and a safety risk.

As a kid we all used to have teacher meetings all the time, I've been alone with all kinds of adults. Girl scout leaders, Sunday school teachers, various relatives. Though I don't think my parents were bad parents or careless for letting me do that.
I think that you're talking about an orthodontist being alone with kids and parents not being allowed in the treatment room. Kids are older at that age. I was commenting on an experience with the dentist. My child was three, not quite four, at the time.
CHeck please how do you figure? What does the fact that they were being filmed years ago have to do with a tweet advertising the kids are going there NOW?
It's outrageous not because I give two shits about the dentist, but rather it advertises where the KIDS ARE.
It puts them at risk, period. Some perv can hang out at that office the next several days until they showed up. Someone could call up pretending to be Kate and get information. Like asking for an appointment reminder. How many times have I called a place like that asking or my appointment time. They just want my name. It's as easy as that.
WIth just one episode showing them going there there's no way anyone would assume they still go there or when they will go there.
PA you were the one who questioned the other mom who let their good go see the dentist. Now you seem to be saying it's okay if your kid is older.
A three year old is a whole other story.

At what point indeed? Kate is well passed that point and has been for some time. Hence her whole, "I want to work in television" attitude. What is really unfortunate is how this has affected the children. They have grown up with constant attention and free crap; they know no other way of life. It will take time to get them back to a sense of normalcy.

You made a rash judgment not knowing any of the facts like how old the kids are or what the set-up of the office is and made that person feel like a bad parent whose kid is gonna get molested and it wasn't necessary. Who can you trust? The pediatrician in Delaware who was charged with 33 felony counts of first- and second-degree rape (including an infant), sexual exploitation of a child by photo or film, and endangering the welfare of a child? He was a mandated reporter.
It is frightening that almost on a weekly basis we pick up the newspaper or hear a report on the news of an adult educator (a mandated reporter) who has been charged with molestation.

I did have to laugh though at the sheep the other day who said the Gosselins don't need US they have plenty of people who are trained professionals who can handle it if need be and we should stay out of it. Ha! Like those people have done a thing for them. Maybe one tried, Murt. Please read Jaycee Lee Duggard's book where she begs readers to PLEASE speak up if they see anything wrong. It is astounding the amount of contact Jaycee had with the outside world and no one said anything if they felt something was off. She went to the vet for her cats, to various customers, made phone calls, had MANICURES, went to the beach. The beach! Went on a road trip to stay at another house once.
And FYI, some of us ARE trained professionals when it comes to child psychology, child abuse, and similar issues. I can't tell you how many MCLE's I've had on those various issues. Look that up. Hi sheep!
I still think the odds of anything happening at the dentist office are downright miniscule. I worry much more about other scenarios.
I was kissed by a young dentist (on the cheek) at the end of an exam at the age of 15 (in the mid 1970s). Creeped me out, I didn't know who to tell, took me 6 months to tell my Mom.

I am horrified about the LA teachers, but I still know that the odds of it happening are miniscule.

If the dentist were a breading ground for child molesters it would be front page news. Most offices are just not set up to foster such a thing. It's rare any which way you slice it--though of course people will worry because people watch the news.

You could also get a brain tumor and die but I don't let it ruin my life asking for brain scans every time I go to the doctor. Live your life and do your best and not let the news keep you from having a happy life.

until i hear one out of ten dentists are child molesters, I'm not changing my next appointment for junior. I'd rather a professional see him I think if I put the braces on it would be quite uneven.
