Jon endorses Rabbi Shmuley for Congress

Jon's long-time friend is running for Congress in New Jersey. Jon will join him for a press conference Wednesday to discuss "his life, the disintegration of his marriage on national television and how tax deductible marriage counseling could have saved it, and the help he has received from Rabbi Shmuley."

Sheri, JudyK, Improbable Dreams, Dmasy, frany and Once a Viewer, Thank you for all your prayers and kindness. I'm babysitting my 2 grandsons (4-6) while this is happening and they keep asking when they can see their sister. You see, we have all been preparing the 2 that we would go shopping and buy a small gift from each of them to their little sister and now they are impatient. Only my SIL and DD are allowed to go into the neonatal unit. My daughter tried to take a picture not showing the tubes so I could show it to them, but was not able to. I showed them 2 pictures and had to explain in their words why she had tubes attached to her. My dear SIL came home, ate supper and fell asleep after having passed 36 hours awake.

As for Kate, right now I couldn't care less what she does, it's not important.

We have a tractor repair shop here. The kids, when little, loved to go as they had a popcorn machine! Our John Deere tractor - smaller than the Gosselin's - needs parts every year. Some special order. Had it for 25 years now. Nothing runs like a Deere :)

No matter what the press release SAID Jon would discuss, this is what he DID say:
''Gosselin, a father of eight and former star of “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” saw his own marriage to Kate Gosselin fall apart amid allegations of infidelity. Boteach counseled the former television star to make a public apology to his wife.
“He has an amazing moral compass and follows through with everything he does,” Gosselin said of Boteach.
Although counseling could not save Gosselin’s marriage, he said lessening the financial burden could help others.
“Even though it didn’t work for me, I believe in it and I believe in marriage,” Gosselin said. “The fact financially is it is expensive.”

I can't object to a single thing Jon said.

Oh, so it wasn't some PR hack telling Jon to publicly apologize just to help his image as we all assumed. It was a licensed therapist he is seeing to try to improve things. That completely changes things. Good for him listening to a professional and doing what they suggest even if the public thinks it was just self-serving.

And she thinks in her mind that she is hot stuff, at the tractor store. that is so funny!

I've been volenteering at a local park at the greenhouse. Working with daycampers, and kid group programs, help teaching them about, nature, dirt, snakes, bugs, plants and homegrown food.

Tomorrow is gonna be a hot one 100+ predicted here in Chicago. I will be at the park in the morning, will turn on A/C, before I leave.

I've been driving a sports car around, while my car is in the shop, getting fixed. I got rear-ended, last thursday, the car insur, is paying for rental, deductable and my car getting fixed. Nobody got hurt, thank God! Her car looked worse than mine. Saturns were built like tanks. Too bad GM took them off the market.

Bluebird,

First, congratulations on becoming a grandma! Exciting time........

I was a neonatal nurse for years; this is a scary time for your daughter and the whole family. But based on the limited info shared here, it sounds like things will work out.

Heart rates can be treated and slowed down to normal; meconium (stool) in the amniotic fluid is, yes, a sign of distress, but it can happen when there is just a minimal amount of stress too.

Having a nasogastric tube placed is pretty common initially for all babies admitted. Scary to look at for parents/grandparents but essentially painless for the baby.

She is in NICU getting the care she needs. My hope for you all is that she will stabilize within the first 24 hrs and in a short time you'll all be telling stories about her birth as you lovingly cuddle her at home.

Keep faith, believe your NICU nurses and trust that all will end well with a wonderful trip home.

Please keep us up-to-date.

Best wishes to everyone who has family members who have health problems, whether babies like Bluebird or older relatives.
On another topic, tangentally related to the post: forgiveness and righting a wrong and correcting injustice is possible. The president of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, founded by Thomas Jefferson himself, was asked to resign by Rector (chairperson) of the universitys Board of Visitors on June 8. President Sullivan gave her resignation on June 10. she has only been job for two years, short time in academia, and has been making changes the Board wanted, just not a day as they wanted. After outcry and protest by almost everyone in the state paying attention, including alumni, legislators, candidates for senate, major donors, students, parents, U of Richmond Spiders, Virginia Tech Hokies, the hometown newspaper of the Rector (that demanded her resignation and the presidents reinstatement), Katie Couric who tweeted a shout out to the student newspaper the Cavalier Daily (that got the rectors emails thanks to freedom of information act request), (Katie is aUVA alum), taxpayers like me incensed by the injustice of firing a university president without a full board meeting, and finally the governor who said fix this mess our all of you resign....
Well, after all that, on Tuesday June 26 Theresa Sullivan was reinstated as president by a unanimous vote of the Board, and the Rector apologized, and the reinstated president said for everyone to go forward without animosity to help make the University stronger. Everyone decoded to act like grownups and treat each other with respect and rectify a mistake.
it is so surprising, it seems like a miracle.
In other news, Ms Kreider is STILL boring. Not a surprise!

Border Collie,

Yes, you can go on! I've been in your shoes and I know exactly what you meant. There were/are days where you just really and truly don't think you can make it.

Not one more moment helping your loved one in a hospital bed in the front room to sit up, to take pain meds, to clean the sheets when needed, to see them in pain or deteriorating in front of your eyes.

For me the worst, most devastating time was sitting beside my brother and my dad knowing they would soon be gone. And there was not one damn thing I could do to stop it. I was consumed with the idea that I'd be left without them. It was at that time in my life that I lost any faith.

I busied myself doing all the nurse things. I realized (now, but not then) with each death that the best thing we can give our loved ones is our time and attention and smile.

Is it hard? Oh yes. But by the time my mother died at home I had learned enough to 'be in the moment'. Hospice helped me with that and I think mom had a more peaceful passing because she had me to talk to her and because I was able to *just sit with her* instead of being the nurse daughter.

The pain never goes away, as I sit here crying at the memories.

But death does eventually come and how we survive it depends on how we endure it, if that makes sense... Hospice was my guiding angel during the deaths of my family. It sounds pretty macabre to say I learned more with each passing. It certainly wasn't anything I *wanted* to learn.

If I may offer a little suggestion that helped me (the hospice nurse told me) - get all the care done, make sure your loved one is stable, get a sitter, maybe even a hospice volunteer, and then... get out of the house for a few hours.

Go have your hair cut, a manicure, get a milkshake at a drive in, got to the library... do something, anything for a mental health break. It is NOT wrong to take care of yourself.

You have to take care of yourself so you can be a good caregiver. Each of us has only so much in us to give, and if we let ourselves get burned out beyond recovery we cannot help the ones we want to help.

So yes, you can go on. One day, one hour at a time. You have the strength deep down inside you. Call on your friends, church members, hospice, family members to help. Don't try to shoulder on alone.

I'll keep you in my heart, and am sending good wishes. Please let us know how things are going...

I was interested in your information when you posted some of this the other day. I spent a week in Charlottesville on vacation a few years ago. Amazing place, felt like home to me; except it did make me feel old at times. I loved the university logos painted on the streets. We spent an evening in a converted turn of the century hardware store that is now a resturant? In a walking-only plaza? of course we spent the week doing as many historical touristy things we could find.

Anyway, thanks for the update, and the information that there are still adults in this world. :)

Kate never wanted counseling, but I can appreciate Jon's efforts, I guess. She said so on the home chores Episode, where she gets her house water blasted. Minutes later, we hear-- "It would feel like Christmas... if I didn't have to get out my checkbook!" (Klassy Kreidy Kristmas.)

Then... "I am being sued for counseling, which I never received" (or in her NPD opinion, needed). Delusions of grand---- oh forget it...

Dwindle,

Thank you for your kind words. I did really enjoy my work, especially working with the parents.

They are all so, so scared when their babies are admitted.

Most of the time the family has what I called DHC syndrome - "doesn't have a clue" syndrome. Everything they see looks so scary, and their normal concern for their new baby leads them directly into thinking the worst. Why not, since they don't know what is going on... most parents think in the emotion of the moment that NICU admission means certain disaster to follow. Not so!

I liken it to me being asked to land a 747 because the pilots are sick. I can imagine just what they feel like as I envision myself sitting in the cockpit, looking around and thinking "oh shit, this can't end well".......

As a nurse, my job was not only to take care of my tiny patient, but to take care of and teach the family. To teach them was to take away the mystery and let them see that things might look terrible, but for example, everyone gets IVs, oxygen, a plusox, cardiac monitoring, a temp probe. I would reinforce that just because things look very technical doesn't mean the baby will die, or that the baby is even really sick. Sometimes we got admits just for monitoring and sent them to step-down nursery in 24 hrs.

One of the really unsettling things to see is an IV in the baby's scalp. It just looks so... awful... but it is no more painful than IV in extremeties and is usually easier to monitor and less likely to infiltrate because the vein is larger.

One of my favorite teaching tools was to show the parents, *before* taking them in to see their baby for the first time, a photo of a different baby with all the bells and whistles. Seeing the equipment on someone else was less threatening and they could concentrate on what I was teaching them instead of not hearing as the stared at their own child.

As each tool is explained it becomes less scary, and I loved it when a mom could calmly tell her mom that "no, don't worry, that alarm just means the Mikey is moving his legs, not that he has a heart problem".

I found that the first 24 hours was always the most scary, disorienting time for new parents. Especially for mom who's hormones have begun the cascade of post-delivery changes. Remember how emotional we all were in the first couple of days? Hormones!!!

Anyway, I've always felt that a good NICU nurse knows to take care of parents and bring them into the health care team as quickly as possible. Makes for better mom-baby bonding, less fear for parents and greater trust in the staff and trust that things will work out well.

If you were to ask me why I did things this way, I'd say it's because it's the way I'd want to be treated.

And actually I have been the recipient of some excellent care by wonderful nurses. I'd like to think I was on the receiving end of the karma circle.

Short story, when I had my first kidney stone, the stone was too large and got stuck in the ureter. Major back-up, sepsis and pain beyond description and an 8 day inpatient stay. The ER nurse taking care of me had a kidney stone when she was 4 months pregnant (ouch is an understatement) and she got such good care and perfect pain management (lots of IV dilaudid every hour)... and she remembered, and gave me the same excellent care.

Someone was looking out for her, and she looked out for me. We get what we give, don't we?

Which brings us full circle back to kart. I wonder what she'll get? Something to ponder..... there are two correct answers.

Jimmy Kimmel, in his opening monologue, remarked on the teaming of Jon Gosselin and Rabbi Schmuley. First, he had to remind the audience who Jon is~~~"Jon was a reality show star of Hoarders." "He and his wife collected a bunch of kids"....LOL He then got in a few more good zingers. Such as,"Jon Gosselin, finally some integrity comes to politics". "Rabbi Schmuley wanted to promote his new line of Ed Hardy yarmelkes." SNORT! And lastly, "Just for the record, if Jon Gosselin's endorsement helps to sway your vote in any way....Please don't vote!" ~~~ Jon has absolutely NO credibility. If he had any sense, he would just stay away from the cameras for ever.

Border Collie,

Oh, I'm devastated for you to learn this is your husband. Each death is unbearable in it's own way.

I'll share a secret - when I was completely, utterly and irretrievably unable to go on I would 'take to my bed' like the Victorian ladies of yore. I would undress, get under the covers and pull them up over my head.

What an escapist moment. After a while, sometimes after a nap I'd feel refreshed enough to get up and start again.

I'm not talking about clinical depression, although I flirted with that as well. I'm talking about a physical place to go that was safe. Remember those old sayings 'go to your safe place'? Well, under the covers was a physical place where no pain to get in. No thoughts about what was happening.

Silly fantasy? Yes, but I've used it a few times. 1 hour under the covers in the middle of the day works better for me than valium.

Any hospice nurse or therapist will tell you to seek out and embrace whatever behavior helps you. A prescribed tranquilzer can help, but not over use. A glass of wine if you're used to that, but not a bottle. Friends and family, but only if they are not narcissists (sorry, had to throw that one in); whatever works will work.

I learned that although it is hard beyond words, that embracing the moment will give you the greatest sense of accomplishment when your loved one is gone. You will gain such comfort knowing you didn't fail, that you found strengh to help someone on their final journey.

I encourage you strongly to use all of hospice's services. If they fail you like your last hospice experience did, the words to use are "I'm sorry, but this hospice experience is not meeting our needs; please arrange another nurse", or aide, or whatever.

And remember this: if home care just doesn't work out, know that you have done everything you can to make it work. You tried, you did your best and that's all anyone can ask of you. Sometimes patients just need inpatient hospice care.

One of the hospice nurses said to me "enjoy this time together" and I was stunned. Enjoy??? But she was right, I got such comfort later from remembering those last few days. Perhaps embrace would have been a better word....

Sometimes, just the act of saying out loud or to friends "I can't go on any longer" brings strength. It's really a request for confirmation that you, in fact, CAN go on.

You have the confirmation. You have our prayers and good wishes for a peaceful journey for your husband. Now all you have to do is embrace this time with him.

Blessings

I finally had a chance to get caught up on some of the posts. To Border Collie, Bluebird, Amy2 and anyone else who is experiencing illness or crisis, you are in my thoughts.

As far as making marital therapy more affordable and/or tax deductible, I don't understand the rationale. If expense is the issue, then it must be obvious that divorce is usually the most expensive solution to marital problems. That should be an incentive to seek marital counseling in order to avoid the financial effects of supporting two households, incurring legal fees and stress on children (avoiding future therapy bills). Unlike individual therapy, which may be deductible as a medical expense if there is a medical diagnosis, marital therapy is not currently deductible. Is the Rabbi's plan to make it deductible as a medical expense, which is restricted to expenses exceeding 7.5 % of adjusted gross income? For Jon and Kate, in year 2009, the deduction probably wouldn't apply.--Even if they only made $1,000,000 that year, they would have to have paid out more than $75,000 before any deduction. Since it is estimated that they made much more than that, it is unlikely that it would qualify for any deduction because:
     They.
      Were.
       Wealthy.

Is Jon not aware of this? Didn't he notice the money flowing through his account on the way to buying expensive cars, renting an expensive apartment and getting body tattoos or did he do that on his $5 allowance from Kate?Seriously, Kate and Jon deserve each other--they just do.

If the Rabbi's plan is to create a new deduction, without restriction, then people who got to marital therapy would get a bigger tax break than those requiring medical care--such as our fellow posters that have found themselves in need of care for themselves or a loved one.  Maybe I am being hard-hearted, but I have a hard time depriving our government of tax dollars to give a tax break to cheating husbands and self-involved  idiots so that they can go to a spiritual counselor or therapist to thrash out their vapid problems.

Amy, Bluebird, and Border Collie, you have been in my prayers and will be. Everyone who shares their hardships here is. I like to err on the side of caution and pray whenever someone comes to mind, assuming it's God who put that person in my head. I don't say much personal stuff here, but that's because I've been burned by doing so in the past. However, I did want you to know that many of your have had a very positive effect on my life.

Your wonderful insights have helped me analyze and heal from what's been going on in my husband's family for years. Kate always reminded me one of his family members, but never could put my finger on why - I just knew that she evoked the same type of emotions in me that this family member did. Being free from her influence has helped our family in so many ways. Even my husband, who always sided with her, now knows that she doesn't give a rip about him or his feelings, except when it makes her feel better.

Your insights also helped me help one of my best friends analyze what was going on in her own family.

Incidentally, that said, I would like to tell you that there is hope. My friend was the golden child in her family, but didn't know it - just knew that her siblings were always jealous of the way she got treated by her family. When she got married, her husband was treated like dirt and it caused many problems in her marriage. After all, he took his wife's attention away from her mother.

But because God got hold of my friend and showed her how He wanted her to honor her husband, her family is doing wonderfully. They're very very happy. Unfortunately, her contact with her mom and one of her siblings is very limited, but she is grateful to not be caught in that vicious cycle anymore. It's made her a better wife and mother, too.

So there is hope! Thanks, everyone. :)

I wish to thank each and everyone of you for your thoughts and prayers. I'm hoping to be able to see my daughter and grandchild today.

Permanent Name thank you so much for your compassion and taking the time to explain to me the Neonatal unit. You are so right when you say all the tools used in the unit can be daunting and scary for those who are not trained. It's ensuring to know that people like you who love their work are taking care of my grandchild. It's early a.m. here and I'm just waiting for news, hoping that my daughter was able to at least hold her baby during the night. Again thank you, your comforting words did put my mind at ease and my thoughts are in less of a turmoil.

Amy2 and Border Collie, my prayers are with you both, I know how hard this is as I also went through it with my Dad.

Bluebird, when my son was born, he also had an extremely rapid heartbeat and was sent to NICU. I wasn't even allowed to hold him after he was delivered. They just rushed him out of the room, and because I had a c-section, I couldn't even get to see him for hours.
I was desolate, and they had to call in a pediatric cardiologist to figure out what was happening; things seemed so black!
It turned out to be an electrical problem in the heart that was treated with medication then; it is now cured completely by laser therapy.
That poor, tiny baby boy who terrified me so is now a 6'4", 23 year old rock climber, full time college student, and cellist!
He's healthy as a horse, although he was followed by the cardiologist until he turned 21, as a precaution.
This cardiologist told me 23 years ago that babies are amazingly resilient, and can live through events that would kill an adult. Especially newborns.
My prayers are that your beautiful grandchild grows up strong and healthy,as I'm sure she will!
Amy2 and BorderCollie, my prayers are with you. Please ask for help when you feel overwhelmed. People are there for you. I hope you can find the grace of God through the pain.

Kate, putting it out to the universe means kindness, compassion, empathy, selflessness, helping others.. not wishing for a new tractor. So if you are wondering why people always quit on you in life and you have to attack each day, block the haters, and generally live a 'woe is me' life, that is why. You are selfish and insecure and it is getting worse by the day.

looks like the kids are back in the basement. She's REALLY not taking them on a vacation this summer, is she? what a loser.

I've never seen anyone grift for a tractor on twitter before. And way to go, Kate, make those kiddos work for ya!
(I laughed so hard when looking at pics of her 'tractor'..that's nothing but a glorified lawn mower with the most expensive green paint in the world....now, an Allis Chambers 8550 is a TRACTOR (what ex's family had on their ranch..and they had more than one..suck that, Kate),

Now on to concerns that really matter...what Dmasy said in 58 expresses my thoughts better than what I could write. Sure makes Kate seem very insignificant, doesn't it? In Kate's world "But wishing for a smaller one (John Deere)to be able to teach cara... She wants to learn to mow :)" things seem mundane and insignificant. Is she implying SHE will teach Cara to mow- ha! And yes, more grifting. If she reads here, I hope the stories of the ladies who are dealing with life and death will give her pause re; her silly tweets and mixed-up priorities. She knows what NICU us and downs are like, and older relatives in poor health- why has she not learned....the one good thing Kate has 'done' is bring us all together here.

GRIFT ALERT- key word, "WISH".

Slave-driving, can-do Kate can't mow her own acres of freakin' lawn?

And isn't her daughter a little young for operating that kind of machinery?

TLC stinks said...

I just have to comment on this. I guess I missed the grifting tweet about a small mower for Cara. I owned a John Deere tractor mower, lower end. Let me say that the mower is not something a child should be driving. It can be dangerous. Further, it took me 4 hours to mow 2.5 acres. Kate is nuts! I bet she has never mowed, even with a push mower, a day in her life. Mowing is not fun, Kate. It's hard, dangerous, time consuming WORK and totally inappropriate for your daughter at her young age with rocks flying and a miscalculation in a turn could end up with that heavy machine tipping over. If she wants Cara to mow, go to Sears and buy a push mower and let her try it out. Or better yet, Kate, try it out yourself.

I wonder if she ditched regular mowing by her land$capers and got some local teens to mow using her tractor, hence "the mower boys"?
-------------------------------------------

This makes plenty of sense to me. I am positive that she has used landscapers in the past to mow. If she hired some "mower boys" because money is getting tighter, this would explain the damage to the John Deere mower. I bet the mower hit a big hole on the property driven by a "mower boy". Anyone who has been mowing the property for years would know where the holes are, and when you have that much land, it is not nice and flat like a suburban lawn.

Those things are dangerous.

Tamara et al., I am okay with spiders and snakes and most things creepy crawly. BUT a few years ago I watched "Snakes on a Plane" late one night. It creeped me right out! And when I fell asleep I had horrible nightmares, I woke up screaming about snakes. Poor DH had no idea what was going on - he hadn't stayed up to watch it. He still teases me.

I have an idea for kHate: talk to 'Mr. tractor repair store' man and ask him to trade in your tractor for a smaller one - he might offer you a deal on a used model. Of course that might require you to cover the difference - you know spend some money - so maybe this idea doesn't appeal to you. Grift away!

aggiemom, I have to agree that John Deere tractors are glorified mowers. In addition to the John Deere, which was mine, my husband had a Kubota with finishing mower attachment. It was awesome. I can't imagine that little John Deere mowing all that property. As in my case, the John Deere was for the lawn around the house and the rest of the property was done by my husband.

Kate seems to be giving more and more responsibility to the twins in lieu of her mothering. Cara wants to mow, they play nursery, etc.

She's making the twins her new "helpers".

I understand 11 yr. olds wanting to pitch in and help Mom-but I don't see "Mom" trying to do it first. Has Kate ever cleaned the chicken coop or mowed the lawn? If she at least showed herself doing that, I could understand-but to me it seems that she is designating tasks to her children, that she herself wouldn't be caught doing.

All 26 acres is not lawn, so I'm not sure how much of the property actually needs mowing, but at this time of year it would have to be done at least twice a month. Let's just say for argument sake it's 10 acres @ $50 an acre. That alone is $500 and then double it to $1000 a month. And that would not be including edging, blowing, and weeding the beds.

Dmasy said...

Kate Doesn't Rate -- you asked a question I can answer. I am a country lady and a farmer's wife. Hubby and I maintain and tend 17+ acres. That "manicured" area is the center of woods, river, pond and extended acres. Hard, rewarding work.

We own 4 mowers -- all the "expensive" green color that another poster made reference to, One is too large for me to safely operate with a 16' deck. One is, I think, just a tad larger than Kate's tractor mower (JD 955) and the other 2 are standard riding mowers. The smallest has a 42" deck. (Because my husband is a farmer, all the larger equipment is used for several purposes.) I also do some mowing with a push mower -- sometimes the only way to get into small corners.

Kate has a task much larger than she and 8 young children can manage.

During lush, green growing season an attractive lawn will be mowed about twice a week. During the dryer, hotter weather once a week will keep the grass looking tidy. Mowing is just the beginning. She has to trim around all those fence posts. That would be done by push mowing or more likely a string line trimmer. That trimming would take just as long as the actual mowing. Mulching -- weed control -- limb removal -- fertilizing -- watering -- dead heading flowers -- leaf removal -- pruning -- the list of responsibilities for attractive landscaping is never ending. It is a commitment!

If her land has any slope or rocks, the mowing job becomes all the more complicated and dangerous.

No way, Kate.

My husband is our repairman. Mowers need a lot of maintenance. Another poster explained the difficulty of changing a tire. Blades need regular replacement or sharpening. A lift of some sort is required. I have driven many times to the "tractor store" (her silly name) to retrieve parts.

She needs to pay thousands of dollars a season for basic services. Using her own equipment and Cara for labor is a ridicules and unsafe idea.

I married a widower. 7 years before we met his first wife was killed in a mowing accident here on the land where we live now. That is probably too much information. But, my heart shrivels when she treats something so serious with a frivolous WISH!

------

This time of the year it needs to be mowed at least once a week, if not twice. I paid $100 to mow three acres (all flat, no rocky terrain) so you can figure accordingly...and that's per week. That does not include trimming, weeding and mulching. Mowing is usually done from April through the end of October. There is no way on this green earth that I would ever allow an 11-year-old to operate a riding mower on her property. I just read about another lawn mower fatality in our area that involved a kid on a mower.

Kate needs an maintenance crew for that piece of land. It's a weekly chore that she couldn't possibly handle. She wanted the "mine, all mine" and now she has it. She looked at it and never took into consideration what it was going to take to maintain it because she never was responsible for managing something that size.

Here’s an update on the situation. The two people facing end-of-life issues are well cared for now, both physically and emotionally. They both know that they are loved and I spend as much time as possible with them (I work full time).

I’m still working through taking care of the boss who severely injured himself recently. I cobbled together friends and colleagues for round-the-clock care, organized food runs to the family, runs to pick up meds, people to get his kids to their activities. Spent most of yesterday doing that and now (mostly) have everything in place. And then there’s the business side, picked up the pieces of things he was working on, disbursed projects to colleagues to take care of and took on several projects myself. Needless to say, I was truly exhausted when I went to bed last night.

All three people are being cared for. Now it’s a matter of allocating my time and energy to seeing each one and spending time with them.

As I said in one of my previous posts, I get up every morning and put one foot in front of the other. It’s not a time a whine, it’s a time to do what needs to be done. People are depending on me.

I probably won’t post an update on the situations. But rest assured everyone is okay and I’m doing what I need to keep myself healthy; physically, emotionally and mentally.

Thanks everyone for your concern. I’m a hugger and I’m sending you hugs.

I have 2 lawn mowing stories. One was when my brother was about 12 he was mowing the yard with a push mower for my dad. The mower hit a rock and went back and landed on his foot. He came running in the house. His shoe had looked like a bomb had blown it apart. He took it off and blood poured out of the hole. Lucky for him he was wearing steel toed boots or he would have lost more than just the tips of his toes.

The second story is about my doctor. He had acres of hilly land. He was out cutting his lawn on a riding lawn mower. As he went down the hill the tractor flipped over and landed on top of him killing him.

These are 2 very good reasons I can think of that children should not be mowing the lawn.

I have used vinegar for many things over the years as I have sensitivities to chemicals. I don't have any household products in my home that has a fragrance.
And, being Canadian, vinegar is always used on French Fries of course!

For years, I bought either No-Name or Bounce unscented dryer sheets until I discovered dryer sheets at Whole Foods which are made of fabric. They look like tube tops (Kate could wear them between laundry days). They are reusable and work like a charm. I have no idea how they control static, but they work!

The biggest challenge is finding unscented dishwasher detergent. I will never, ever understand why my dishes and glass wear need to smell like lemons!
Unscented dish washing detergent is a rare thing, and expensive to buy unscented, so I wash many dishes by hand. But I do clean my dishwasher by running a quick rinse cycle with a glass of vinegar on the bottom shelf.

Gotta' love the good, old fashioned products!

Kate didn't give a thought to the possible upkeep of such a massive "hobby farm." The "mine, all mine" is truly hers, all hers and she needs to take care of it. No matter what the cost. Beth and Bob were the smart ones. They eventually downsized.

Isn't there something in the Ten Commandments about not coveting what others' have? Doesn't make anyone happy to be constantly wanting what your neighbor has. Really a problem with Kate. I've seen her as ungrateful for many years.

"We did a lot (!!!) of chores and work around our house and property including feeding and caring for our small farm and helping to cut and stack A LOT of fire wood. We also had assigned rows of our two very large gardens that we had to keep weed-free! Our allowance was given in honor of our work contribution around the house."

She has no problem assigning multiple chores to her kids. I actually agree that all children should have a reasonable amount of chores to teach responsibility and collaboration within the family. I think it can help reduce entitlement issues and spoiled children.

HOWEVER, her kids have earned her millions of dollars. It was not their choice to live in a mansion on acreage! She should not be assigning unreasonable chores, and I cannot believe she would expect an elementary student to mow her massive property...

Ok, they bought that property in '09? If that's the case, that mower was used two summers ('10, '11), and now is unusable for the third ('12).

How long has she been on twitter? Now she tweets about daily breakdowns or chores (pool opening, chickens, water hose moving, water leak, broken tractor, having home repairs done,etc.)...anyone think since her tlc contract and money ended a few months back, that now SHE is having to do all the work and pay for it herself? I don't recall her mentioning this sort of stuff before. If so, she is finally getting her first taste of what it's like to maintain upkeep on that large place...and she is woefully unprepared for the challenge.

If she paid that poor neighbor with a loaf of bread for all the hot, sweaty, greasy, grimy work he did yesterday, she should be ashamed of herself.
Seems like she's had it repaired three or four times already...why not just trade it in? or better yet, just get rid of it..those kids are no where near the age or maturity to get on that lawn mower.
If I were Jon, I believe I'd have to have say something about the kid's safety.

Awww.. thank you Dmasy and Once a Viewer!

We had another female shar-pei but we had to put her down last Nov. right before Thanksgiving. The breed is prone to kidney problems and that's what happened, kidney failure. She was almost 12. She went from healthy to barely being able to walk in 7 days. I'm not sure what was worse, losing this wonderful dog so suddenly or seeing how heartbroken my boys were. We got her when they were in grade school/preschool.

She and the little gal we have now were constant companions, even though from day one they could never establish who was the Alpha of the pair. Many scuffles ensued. After we lost her buddy, our little girl barely picked at her food and lost so much weight, her spine started to show. The vet gave me some recipes for some weight gaining delicacies, they did the trick. She'll be 10 in the fall, so even when she's barking to distraction or directly under our feet when someone is handling a tasty meat product, we don't at all take for granted how precious our remaining time is with her :)

The biggest challenge is finding unscented dishwasher detergent. I will never, ever understand why my dishes and glass wear need to smell like lemons!

_____

Seventh Generation has automatic dishwasher detergent that is "free and clear." I use some of the products, and they work really well. We still do all dishes by hand (i use the dishwasher to store things, go figure) and I love their regular dish soap. Works better than any other brand I've used. The products are also reasonably priced for what they are.

Hi. New here and wanted to comment on the mowing. In my opinion Cara is old enough to mow and the new model of mowers have a lot of bells and whistles for safety. (so many they drive me nuts). Cara seems to be of the type who likes her alone time and that mower would give her that time. When my 2 kids, count em 2, were little the mowing was my alone time. It was the best therapy ever! They weren't allowed near the mower and it would take me @ 2 hours to get it all done. It is also a way to teach her responsibility and a little about how to take care of a piece of machinery. My DH does the technical stuff but I have learned how to do the basics and a lot of times by reading the manual figuring things out on my own.

Another thought about the chores issue:

Kate and her siblings were assigned heavy chores because it helped run her family farm. They needed to help because the care/feeding/schooling in her family was expensive. Did she think that the tuition for her siblings and her was free at her private school? I think there are five kids in her family.

It's interesting that she does not have even a small veggie garden on her massive property. By growing her own food, she could really gloat about organics. But I suppose she has bad memories of having to weed her portion of her family's veggie garden...I can see her out there weeding and dreaming of getting away on the luxury vacations that she was being deprived of.

Isn't that just the truth? my 'baby' is 11 and I am blessed everyday to have her by my side. We are so lucky to have her, even when my feet have to hang over the side of the bed just so she can sleep at the foot of the bed.
BTW I just love sharpeis. We have one at my work and she is quite a character, she is dark grey and looks like a little hippo - very cute!

Aggie, I thought Jon said at one time the tractor came with the property. The house was built in the late 90s, it could at least be that old. Speaking of the property, someone posted the Remax house tour link upthread and it said the barn dates to the 1790s! That's kind of cool, there must have been an old farmhouse on the property at one time that was torn down.

Regardless.... ummmmmm Kate? Get the damn thing fixed at a proper repair center and STFU about it. She said on twatter last night it still wasn't fixed, I bet it's in need of more repairs than just the wheel. Hopefully, the neighbor decided he wasn't going to spend his whole day fooling with it for a crappy loaf of bread and risking an eye bleed from having to look at Kate's silicone-filled danglers.

Border Collie -- Peace.

Prayers and virtual hugs for you 3 ladies and all of the wonderful posters here. You are all remarkable people and I'm proud to be one of you.

Wayward -- LOVE your Shar-Pei! They're wonderful dogs. I have a god-dog who is a Sharpie (as my Godson called him that when he was too little to say "Shar-Pei" properly). He -- the dog, not the kid -- is solid black. So gentle and loving. A vinegar rinse would help with the odor. Since sharpies are prone to yeast infections in the folds, the vinegar can help prevent that, too.

As my late mother would have said, KK doesn't have the sense God gave a goose. I live in farm country and every year there are at least a half dozen deaths/serious injuries from mower accidents -- mostly involving experienced adults. And she wants to train an 11 year old to use one to do the mowing? And a small for her age 11 year old at that? I certainly hope Jon is able to put the kabosh on this brainstorm quickly. Although, short of getting a court order, I don't know how he can if she takes a notion to follow through with the idea.

It just occured to me tt her parents must be mortified over Kate's very public grifting (i.e.) wishing). Sounded like she was raised with dignity and a work ethic--what happened? No one has a perfect childhood or parents. Once I had my own children, I realized that parents are people that are doing the best they can.

Does any of her family live within Kate's community?

Farmer's Wife, welcome. I agree that mowing is definitely alone time and I do enjoy it, too. Having said that, I have to respectfully disagree about a child on a riding mower. I'm an adult and have almost tipped mine over. It does have the safety feature of the engine shutting off if you fall off the seat, but if the mower lands on you, be prepared to get seriously hurt or even killed. I always had my cell phone with me just in case I had an accident. Cara could use a push mower and hopefully Kate would make sure that she wore proper shoes and wear protective glasses. I know that's not as much fun as a riding mower, but 11 is just too young, IMO. What I would rather see is Kate out there mowing. After all, she claims to be "can do" Kate.

Re: Cara mowing. If Cara has never been around this kind of machinery, she may think driving a mower is like driving one of those electric cars around the grass. There must be intense training on a mower - it's not something you can just hop on and go.

I wonder if Kate was saying something like "I don't know how we can pay those lawn boys and
also take a trip to the beach this summer" and so Cara said, "I'll mow the grass" as an attempt to give a solution to that unhappy
problem.

Maybe she's bored to death and wants something to do. Anything.

Or, she's planning to get on the mower and drive herself to a friend's house so they can go to a movie and grab a cheeseburger together.
Since Kate's in her own world, she may never miss Cara for a few hours of freedom.

LaLaLandNoMore said...

It's true, "her kids have made her millions of dollars." Kate wants more out of those kids. It's all very sad. Hobby farms like Kate's are expensive to own, especially if you don't grow anything on them. Most of us would be growing berries, fruit trees, vegetable gardens, etc. to help pay for the place. Kate never dreamed their show would end. Thus, the wasteful spending on land she doesn't need. Silly woman.

I agree. I don't care how many safety features come on a riding mower, I would never allow a child (and that's what Cara is) to mow a yard, especially when Kate has money stashed away. She wanted that property and gave no thought to the upkeep. It's hers, all hers, and now she can figure out a way to pay for her mowing boys. Every summer I read accounts of kids being injured mowing yards when tractors have overturned, or a safety issue was overlooked, or something on it was defective. Maybe Kate has no problem with it, but it's not going to be my child in the ER because of such an accident that clearly could be prevented.

My cousin just spent a week with us. She suffers from extreme anxiety and it was miraculous she managed to get on a plane and fly up here to visit us. One of her greatest fears is airports, and when she landed in Vancouver there were 6 other flights were coming in at the same time which was paralyzing for her. She had to weave her way through Customs and Immigration with throngs of people, but she did it.

She left on Tuesday morning, but her anxiety around going to the airport began on Sunday, and it was hard to know what to do other than let her work through it. Her flight was at 8:15 a.m. and wanted to be there 3 hours prior (flights to the U.S. require being there 90 minutes ahead). Of course we complied without question, we had her there at 5:00 a.m. Being trapped in fear is just a devastating thing to witness.

I have learned in life one needs to be supportive and to have support to help make life make sense it takes an unexpected turn. I look at my cousin becoming more closed off and worry for her as she lives alone and rarely sees anyone outside her work. She is near retirement and I cannot imagine how she will fill her days. This blog is a community where bloggers can reach out to one another offering support and good wishes, and my sense is we all have full lives which is a blessing in itself.

One day we went to a seafood restaurant in Louisville and I remember Dad's face lighting up when his food arrived. It was wrapped in newspaper-style paper, and the server brought a large bottle of malt vinegar to the table, unasked. It was just like it should be, he said. My dad was delighted, and told us we'd be back to this restaurant as often as we could afford it. Turned out that the owner was from the UK too, so he knew about these things.

Jumping: Good idea re: vinegar. Do they still have the little packets in fast food places? It was a given for us, but very strange here ( as were many things!) Happy Canada Day to you & other Canadians this weekend!

Tomatoes: How exciting! Do you have a name for your new baby? Btw anyone watch Dogs in the City?

Does she mean "in recognition" of doing the household chores? "In honor" just sounds so strange. Or is just me? Was her paycheck as a nurse "in honor" of showing up for work? I dunno, is it a regional thing?

Weirdest way I've seen french fries served was
with mayonnaise. That was right here in a local restaurant.

Another thought about the chores issue:

Kate and her siblings were assigned heavy chores because it helped run her family farm. They needed to help because the care/feeding/schooling in her family was expensive. Did she think that the tuition for her siblings and her was free at her private school? I think there are five kids in her family.
----------
I think people are just BORN to be doers or dreamers. As the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink...that applies to Kate. Her parents made her work, but she wasn't born with a work ethic. She just doesn't have it in her.
As for her 5.00 allowance as a child (which she seems bitter about, btw),flash forward yrs later, and that was Jon's weekly allowance from Kate. Stingy much?

I saw an interview she did with her brother Kevin(obviously years ago), and in it she says her brother took a lot of her punishment for her because she wouldn't fess up to the misdeed and he said he did it...that was interesting, since she had a major flip-out about the globe ordeal. I bet she pawned off a lot of her childhood chores on her siblings as well.
Kate's just not a doer..never has been. She just barks orders, flaps her arms and claps her hands. And her fans think this is a role model?
My bet is, they are just like Kate!

There are so many things wrong with Kate and the list justs keeps getting longer.
The fact that she is EXTREMELY lazy and stingy she is going to work those kids
to the bone! Remember Jon ( he was what I consider a Slave Husband ) he did everything for her because she was always tired of sitting! Apparently sitting takes a lot of energy because she was always tired!!! Even if she gets money some how she will always work those kids that's just the way she is!

Let's Throw - your Slave Husband comment reminded me of something. A few summers ago our family hosted a student from Japan named Riki. (4-H has a really neat month-long exchange program & you don't have to be a member of 4-H to participate. I highly recommend it!). Anyway, our 12 year old visitor arrived, and two days later we were all heading out of state to visit some friends. I was super busy taking classes for grad school, getting ready for our trip, etc. so my husband was doing lots of stuff around the house. He was cooking, cleaning, and keeping things in order. The morning of our trip arrived, and before we left my husband was vacuuming the house. He said to me, "Riki's going to go home and tell his family 'All the men in America are slaves!'"
We laughed many times wondering what must have been going through that child's head during his visit. :)

To all who are going through troubles, my thoughts are with you.

Permanent Name - Oh how I wish I had seen your lovely posting about the NICU 9 months ago. My niece Nora-Ann was diagnosed with 22q Syndrome last November at 4 weeks old and underwent major open heart surgery. The pictures were so scary! She will need a lot of intervention for the rest of her life and I will keep your words of wisdom close to my heart.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries, that started in northern Virginia, serves fantabulous French fries and had malt vinegar available for the fries. Yummy sometimes, but I am a catsup gal!

Me too, JoyInVirginia. When I was growing up, the fad was to get FF with gravy. I never cared for it -- not much of a gravy fan -- but all my friends would order that when we went out.

What's troubling is I get the sense she knows full well the thoughts this guy probably had about her kids, she just doesn't CARE. I find this attitude far more sick than a mother just being in simple denial someone ever really thought unpure thoughts about your kids.

In this case denial is better than not giving a crap.

Wouldn't Kate need her tractor to remove snow on her long driveway. I am sure someone must do this for her very early in the mornings so she can get her car out and drive the kids to school.

Don't know if the person doing the removal uses her tractor or his equipment but it is just another reason why she may need a tractor.

Um, not to open an old can of worms, but-

mama mia said @36:
She had a diploma program under her belt with the word 'nursing' in it, likely a bedpan pusher, and she didn't want to work.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As a nurse, albeit with a degree, diploma nurses work just as hard and perform the same skills and duties. Maybe Kate as not up to par at least in the bedside manner area, but I really don't like to hear any nurse spoken of as a' bedpan pusher'. That is one task no one enjoys but it must be done. Sorry mama mia, but this is a sensitive issue and there are a number of nurses on this board. Ok, case closed!
Thank you Once a Viewer for sticking up for us RN Diploma folks. (from an LPN who earned a 3 yr RN diploma then BSN and now is a APNP).
