Jodie Foster: 'If I had to grow up in this media culture, I don’t think I could survive it emotionally'

Dang, even Jodie Foster is now describing child stardom as the 'cruelty of a life lived as a moving target' and says you have to 'submerge beneath the foul air and breathe through a straw.' Holy moly.

I don't care if I turned out just fine, you idiots, child stardom still SUCKS: Foster
says when she worked with Stewart on
The Panic Room,  she tried to get
Stewart's mother to talk young Kristen out of acting.
Oh, snap. Turns out Jodie Foster thinks
child stardom is just as horrendous as
we've always tried to tell you it is.
The former child star, so-often cited by naive pro-child exploiters as a "success story" and proof child stardom is not that bad after all, is finally done with playing nice after another former child star, Kristen Stewart, has spent the past few weeks having an unfortunate misstep plastered all over the tabloids. Foster has pretty much avoided the typical pitfalls of former child stars. The drugs, the partying, the depression, the reckless behavior, the affairs .... well, there was that little presidential assassination attempt that was pretty much all about her, but otherwise, she came through her childhood fairly unscathed despite working since she was three years old and having no memory of ever not being famous.

But, now Foster flat out says there is no way she would want to be a child star in today's culture. In fact, she would call for someone to help lead her out of it (Oh, you mean like Aunt Jodi tried to?): "I would only hope that someone who loved me, really loved me, would put their arm around me and lead me away to safety."

Foster has been rather polite and tight lipped about child stardom previously, however she recently described her mother, who managed her career, as a "mostly negative influence in my life."

An absolute must read: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/08/15/jodie-foster-blasts-kristen-stewart-robert-pattinson-break-up-spectacle.html

&&&

It drives me crazy she says she "wished" to visit this spa because it makes it sound like she can't afford it. B-S, open up your wallet and head down there when you don't have the kids.

I also don't believe for a second this woman isn't a regular spa rat.
___________

Me either. Just more grifting, as she is so good at it. Ditto on the letters to her kids she "needed" to publish. Every private moment with her kids are up for sale. Her chronic tweets to companies is very disturbing to me, as she is reverting back to what has worked in the past, since no one is knocking on her door for media work.

Kate never considers the public damage/effect her twitter, blogs, etc...have on her kids, as she only thinks of herself and what she knows best- grifting. She built a career on it. Mailing out tapes of her and Jon and the kids to TLC. Pimp Kate Extraordinare. Whatever attention she can get or freebies she can get, are fine, as this is what she knows best. The kids are not babies anymore and will face ridicule with her crazy grifting tweets, blogs, photos, and twitter comments. Does she EVER think of anyone but herself?

Again - she is "wishing" for a spa visit- Rub your magic jeannie lamp and one of the sheeple or company or private donor will come through. She knows EXACTLY what she is doing with no after thought for her kids. What else is new? Disgusting, desperate, and greedy - in her mind she deserves and needs it. She always knows best.

The ONLY thing nasty was Kate being a bi*ch! On national TV with no consideration of the embarassment she would cause to others. There was no need for drama, but that is what she does. While humiliating other people- let the line form - Jon, kids, her family (all of them) Jodi and Kevin, Beth and Bob, Jamie, Ashkey, Tower Man, Tony D., Water Filter man,... too many to list and probably many we do not know about. My guess is that the list is very LONG!

One great lesson I have learned in life is that you always treat other people the way you wish to be treated. Goes a long way, but apparently Kate has not gotten the memo.

I am sure she is nice to people she needs something from, but it really counts as a general life principle and has to do with respect. I am sure she will never get this, as she always operates in the "self" mode. NPD.

Hi everyone!

Re: Kristen Stewart
She, from what I have seen and read, has been a brat about things for a long time now. She’s considered mean and rude by most press. And she gives, or rather did give, interviews like this one on a regular basis:
(Excerpt)
“"I feel boring. I feel like, why is everything so easy for me? I can’t wait for something crazy to f*cking happen to me. Just life. I want someone to f*ck me over! Do you know what I mean?” she says in the June issue of Elle.”

She got what she wanted in my opinion and that’s all I feel about her and her situation.
(for anyone needing a link, this interview is available all over the net. I copied this from the Huffington Post where the interview was being discussed)

Re: Robert and the Gosselin book
I really hope he didn’t stop the book. I have no idea rather he did or didn’t. I would like to think somewhere, someone will stand up to Ms. Grifter and tell all about her.
But I’ll believe it when I see it.

Re: Kate grifting
She has always been trash in my eyes and always will be. I do believe the majority of the kids will follow in her footsteps thinking that they are owed a free ride just like their mother taught them. I also believe they will assume that all they have to do is ask and they will receive since they carry the name Gosselin.
Frankly, unless taught differently, why would they not feel that way? And who is to teach them differently?
Simply ask and it happens. Why bother working when it is handed to you…
I detest this woman with the white hot heat of a thousand suns! But my feelings haven’t and will not change a thing re: the Gosselin Grifter

Re: All of you
What a great bunch of people! I do enjoy the humor and the conversation you all get into.

Have a great day everyone!

Remembering the crying at the gate when Jon couldn't get in to drive the children up to the house was very sad. We may never understand how the separation, divorce but also what Kate said about their father that virtually destroyed those children at that time.Their lives have always been about people who leave them. Why wouldn't they think Jon was leaving for good too? Jon was the affectionate parent, the one who played with them, gave them love, bathed them, hugged them. He may have been immature when he did leave, but I think it is time to stop attacking Jon, he has said he is sorry especially to his children. That is all that matters unless he gets back on Twitter. Then I will change my mind.

See, she hurt the teenagers and they were her fans. You don't hurt the teenagers, they will destroy you. Teenagers pack a theater, buy the Vampire crap, etc., they are the ones waiting at hotels to get a photo of you, you dip crap. You want to experience life? You got it. You have more millions that I can count, what like 50 million dollars? So retire, go away, cut your hair and work for the poor in East L.A., and get a dose of real life. You deserve what you get from the press. One should never attack the press or the pap people, look at Kate Gosselin? She is a good example, she is asked for free toilet paper now. Love the TP blogpost. I recommended it on Google Accounts and liked on FB. Wouldn't it be great if TPGate is the "end" of KK?!

I like the idea of a "freebies" post. I join restaurant clubs too. In addition to RR giving you a free burger on your BD, TGIFriday and Ruby Tuesday does the same. Red Lobster and Olive Garden give special c/o's and Scrambler Marie also gives you a free meal on your BD. Other restaurants have a point system where you earn points with purchases and then can exchange those points for free food -- Red Robin, TGIFriday, and Subway all do this, as well as a number of local restaurants. Speedway awards points for purchases too, and those points can be exchanged for free gift cards and free food or gas. Last Christmas I gave 2 young people on my list $10 cards to Blockbuster and another friend a $25 gas card thanks to those points. One of my biggies is free books for my Kindle. I subscribe for several blogs that list those daily. These can be freebies from Indy authors trying to get their work noticed, to free books from recognized and award-winning authors publicizing a new book. Calling or writing manufacturers can get you freebies, too. I called a customer comment line for Kimberly-Clark because I could no longer find a product of theirs that I liked and purchased regularly (it had been discontinued, I learned). They sent me a whole envelope of c/o's, some for free items and some for $1 or $2 off other items (including TP, LOL). A friend of mine called a dog food manufacturer because of a problem she experienced with a bag of dog food and they sent her c/o's for 100# of free dog food (she has 3 large dogs, so that really came in handy). Stores often have buy one/get one free offers. I sometimes use those to stock up on things like toothpaste or shampoo, but those items often find their way to the food and toiletries pantry run by my church. Some pharmacies give free gift cards or free groceries for transferring prescriptions. Those can come in handy when there's too much month left at the end of your money. Some of those gift cards have also made their way to the food/toiletries pantry. There are a lot of legitimate ways to obtain freebies without begging, grifting, or making a fool of oneself, and those freebies can be used to benefit others, too.

Completely agree. There are homeless shelters that might benefit from QN, rather than sending supplies to Kate, who is far from homeless. Her recent grifting is selfish and disgusting when you consider there are far many more needy persons. Not some millionare Z List grifter.

I know that they want publicity and Kate counts on this, but it makes ALL companies providing grifts to Kate to be strictly looking for an endorsement from Kate, when they could clearly get more credit by posting of their contribution to charitable needs, if they are looking for praise.

I still can not believe that a millionaire is grifting for toilet paper- says a lot about the company and Kate. And her desperation, as she still feels the world owes her, as she has 8 kids. The world STILL owes millionaire Kate as she has 8 kids! By her own choice.

Tamara said...

Thanks to alerting people to this Angie. I so wish more boarding schools would open in the USA for kids living under the poverty line and in dangerous areas. On top of that, programs that help their parents help the kid's education more than one might think. It's too bad that not enough people realise exactly how much a good education can help the economy in the long run. Same with how juvenile offenders are treated.

Kate has some point to prove putting all of her grifted freebies out there---now it is Georgetown cupcakes. Another free deal. And then she mentions something about her cashier at Lowe's. Tress formation! In January 2010, the reality star turned Coupon Cabin blogger ditched her signature spiky 'do for $7,000 extensions, compliments of Ted Gibson. She slimmed down with daily 5 mile runs - and lost even more competing on Dancing With the Stars in March."

I came across an article that verifies that the Gosselin family qualified for taxpayer funded state health insurance--even when Jon worked in his government job. The article came out a year after the tups were born. I know that it has been said that Kate's pregnancy and delivery was paid by her insurance. And, as we all know, they lied when they said Jon was fired from his job with the cabinet maker because the employer didn't want to insure the family.

I know, from personal experience, that liars often include a kernel of truth to make their lies more believable. Unless someone has a credible source saying otherwise, I think that the kernel of truth is that the family insurance was through Jon's job--not Kate's, as some posters have said. That means that they may have had public assistance for insurance during Kate's pregnancy and delivery, as well as the hospital and medical expenses for the tups.

If so--WOW! They are, if possible, bigger grifters than I thought. How galling for the taxpayers that recipients of expensive fertility treatments went on the public dole. Explains the angry outpour of disgusted "sediments" from the locals.

In Washington state, no matter why someone is fired, if they have dependents and no other source of income, they will receive unemployment. That is, unless there is a lie on the application. Knowing what we now know, I'm betting that Jon cited the insurance lie as the reason for dismissal.

Obviously, this is just my humble opinion! Given the fact that both Jon and Kate have behaved like pigs at a trough, while spinning lies and exploiting the generosity of others, this is a credible scenario.

I also took the time to log into my very rarely used twitter and posted it to several people through there. I thought it was well written and I know it inspired me to take some action.

I am terribly sorry your "idol" Kate is a moment away from being finally flushed down the proverbial toilet drain herself. However, Anonymous 9, go back and play in your own sandbox.

No lie (Kate speak)! No lie! This is really funny, and I'm not full of s**t!

I just got back from grocery shopping. While in the toilet paper aisle looking for Scott, I came face to face with QN. A woman probably in her late sixties, early 70s, and her husband were rearranging the things in their cart. She picked up the QN and looked at it. Out of the blue she said to me, "I'm not buying this. Did you hear that the woman with the six kids wrote to them and asked for free toilet paper?"

I didn't say anything. She continued, "She lives in a three million dollar mansion and she has the nerve to ask for free toilet paper. She should be ashamed of herself. I seen (sic) her on that dancing show and she made a fool of herself. She should have gotten enough money dancing to buy her own damn toilet paper for the next hundred years."

She walked away. The only thing I said was, "really?" but I laughed the whole way into the cereal aisle.

Has anyone on an entertainment channel or late night television picked this up? I'm wondering how she knew. I am local, but this has spread pretty darn fast.

How would anyone have the sick nerve to "grift" for a beach vacation, yet, have the money in the bank to pay a "body guard"? Too low class for discussion. With so many families needing jobs, food, essentials for survival in this country, I'm feeling like the Gosselins are a waste of time and energy. They apparently lack nothing. Some of the new shows on TLC are a disgrace and not entertainment. Sad, really. Wonder how Kate feels to be cancelled to make space for the new talent on TLC. I'd bet it's eating her up!

Admin, you have done a great job on this blog and so many, many contributors are top notch, but I must take a break. Best wishes to all who contribute.

For ME, the question is why do the tabloids keep dredging up old stuff, pretending it is new? Another question is why is it considered a real quote just because the tabloid puts quotation marks around anything they decide?

Could it possibly be that stirring up things about Jon sells mags/gets hits on gossip sites?

My earnest plea is for everyone here to totally ignore posters like mama mia and anonymous.

If we ABSOLUTELY AND COMPLETELY ignore, despite our quite justified urge to slap her silly, she will eventually go away.

It would happen like this:

She'd post something outrageous.

We'd ignore.

She'd up the ante.

We'd continue to ignore.

She'd post something unbelievably provocative because she's being ignored.

Akin to a 4 year old temper tantrum in the store.

Admin, who'd been quietly following would swiffer up the garbage and ban the IP. Even the patient, fair and openminded Admin has a breaking point.

It takes time, but like a child with behavioral problems, there is a way to deal with it.

Trolls like Mama Mia and the chickens Anonymous live to provoke fights and get reactions. That is their sole purpose for posting on a blog like this.

I dare say they often times have a nefarious purpose for their hit-and-runs, a behind-the-scenes agenda we might not be aware of.

It seems that sometimes they stir up shit here to go back to other blogs and 'report on us'.

Ignore, ignore, ignore. As hard as it will be to do. IGNORE, IGNORE, IGNORE.

They don't deserve any of our attention.

JMHO.

Is there a page where all the tweets made by them and to them are kept? Are they the only ones who can see them? If so, then what is Twitiq?

We settled for a 'quiet dinner at home'; he grilled a steak, I made a 'good salad' (one with more than just lettuce - ha ha.

Quiet private moments are the best! Listened to some classical music on Pandora while we ate on our "fabulous sunroom porch".

Sadly, we don't have a pool or a leather sofa. Had to make do on a nice set of wicker chairs and an old oak table from my grandmother.

It's like the psychology of those Nigerian scammers and assh*les everywhere...

Good people are great targets for those who are 'off'. They know just how to push our buttons, and I dare say they sit back and laauughhhh everytime we bite back.

I've snapped a couple of times here and Admin gave me a little slap on the wrist. It's incredibly maddening. (Not the slap - I mean what provoked me to bite).

But I like to think that we are bigger than they are. We are better and smarter than they are. We have more intelligence, more manners, more control and certainly more understanding of what they are doing.

And how to stop it.

Please, please understand I am not criticizing anyone who's replied to trolls. I understand, believe me I do.

I'm just thinking that a behavioral modification approach might work, allowing them to comment themselves into swifferdom. They'll either go away pissed, or they will be removed.

Win/win.

Again, JMHO, and no criticism of anyone who's replied to them.

Without face-to-face cues here in cyberworld, let me offer this scenario:

We're having tea at a Starbucks, where we each have to actually pay for it, it's not grifted. You say to me, "man, those trolls are so damned annoying!"

And I say, "I kno - oh! We should just, like, IG - NORE them and they'll go away - aaay" Complete with valley speak and up talk at the end.

Well, compadres that we are, perhaps we'd say it in a more dignified way, suitable for Ms. Manners.

Did anyone else have the iceberg lettuce wedge salad growing up?

Mom would cut a head of iceberg lettuce into 4 wedges, plate it on salad plates and dribble a large glob of thousand island dressing over the top. It would dribble down the sides artistically.

Our bread basket in the center of the table was a small plate with slices of wonder bread stacked on it. Two pieces per adult, one slice per kid.

Also included was the obligatory meat, vegetable and potatoes.

Not to forget the large glass of milk. We could add Nestle's chocolate powder to it on Sundays.

Followed up with a tasty dessert of cake, pie or ice cream. Sometimes watermelon in the summer.

Back the it was a normal, good meal. Nowadays... not so much.

Yikes, as usual the kids know about things before the adults do.

According to my 12 y/o friend, an 'ignore bomb' is... well, sort of akin to talking over someone. Ignoring them and flooding the converstaion with content you want to talk about. Not giving them a moment to get a word in edgewise.

Someone says something you don't like, you just immediately talk about something else, and keep ignoring by controlling the conversation. Eventually the snot gets they idea they are not welcome to participate in the conversation unless they fall into respectful line.

Kids! LOL......

So, for all of you who are mother's or maybe who are wives who have husbands who still go to work and your kids are grown or you have grandkids you might be raising I have a question.

When all your kids or your husband goes out the door to work everyday...do you have time to sit and be frivolous with Twitter (if you Twitter) or spend all day at the computer?

I mean we all have days were we just put things off and take a break and do nothing and there is nothing wrong with that!

But don't most people once the kids or whoever goes out the door...don't you have laundry, cleaning, errands to run, a hobby you enjoy doing, cleaning or whatever multiple things that you can do during the day don't they keep you away from just being chatty-chats most of the time?

Some of you might be retired or enjoy reading the blog for different reasons. But I just wonder with ALL the stuff Kate says she worries over, for all the things she's responsible for and on and on...I don't know I just think she comes off as having too much time on her hands a bit with Tweets to teenage girls or you know even it could be some guy in Iowa in his underwear for all I care.

I just think if you are a mother or wife and such you wouldn't have time to be so aloof to household and or personal interests that go on.

Either Kate is SO organized that things just glide by in her life and she never has upsets where you run into traffic, you get stuck in a long Wal-Mart line, your car breaks down or you have a family illness, etc. Those things you don't plan for, kid sick from school.

With life going on around you I just wonder how she glides through it still being able to drop Tweet after Tweet.

Personally I would be freaking out if I was facing my second year of unemployment. Unless she's got a money tree in her back yard her funds, without something, anything coming in to keep her head above water...Kate, don't you know you're on a sinking ship? And not a lot of people are going to be willing to rescue you from the mess YOU made. I wouldn't.

Sorry to take so long in getting back... but a regular poster here asked me last night about Jodie Foster's nude scene in the movie- "The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane". It looks like Jodie's sister, Constance (or Connie) "stood-in" for the nudity. Well, it turns out Connie is 7 years older than Jodie.
Just to set the record straight... Did some homework on the book/film!
"Though cut from the American version to earn it a PG rating, the international version of the film featured a fleeting nude scene in which Rynn is seen naked as she prepares to go to bed with Mario. The nude scene was played by Foster's older sister, Connie, who had also stood-in for Jodie's more explicit scenes in Taxi Driver."

Funny you should mention this. If Kate's on a septic system, the last thing she should be using is a product such as Quilted Northern. It can really mess up a system, especially if 120 rolls are flushed down there in two weeks! We had a problem with our system and I got a good talking to from the septic cleaning guy, who told me NEVER to use such paper in the toilet. In fact, he was quite verbal about it and I felt like a kid being scolded!

However, why do some think it's perfectly okay to post pictures of kids they are babysitting for? And just like Kate, they're tweeting while they are supposed to be taking care of the children.

They have no clue what invasion of privacy means and don't seem to care about those children's right to privacy. No wonder they're Kate fans.

Perhaps before getting totally bent out of shape at a Georgia Pacific employee whose thankless job is to read and respond to Twitter, it might be a nice idea to look into what charitable work Georgia Pacific does in communities.

As I mentioned before that particular brand of TP, as well as countless other paper product brands of GP are produced in my local community. This does include the name brand, store brand, generic and client specific versions of that TP.

Have any of you thought that GP is extremely involved both in money and products in my community? And that the 2500 or so local employees are also good citizens in many ways. Do you know for a fact that the seconds from the plant don't end up at Paul's Panty, NEW Homeless Shelter, Freedom House or the countless other places who serve the needy?

Rather than avoiding a product, I much prefer to LOL at an idiot woman who has stooped so low that she is now begging for toilet paper. And they'll probably just ship her a case of seconds they can't sell anyway.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Barnaby that's actually how I see it and also I see it as a great opportunity to remind people about things charities need you might not think of, like TP. What's funny is that for that one case of toilet paper they sent her I'm willing to bet that so many people were reminded about the need for TP at charities and hopped to it, that charities actually made out better than had she not.

The way I see this woman lately is let's just turn her own game against her and use her shenanigans to help others.

Or the parents who work full time and still can't make ends meet and might be facing foreclosure of their home.

There are people who aren't able to get their basic necessities met it's either: do I buy my kid something to eat or do we pay the bills?

And here is Kate, Twitter away her mid-life on grifting it almost infuriates me I guess that just because she has 8 kids people hand her stuff and I imagine a lot do it simply for the recognition, her once-upon-a-time fame or whatever about it.

What companies should do is donate some of their goods to shelters or to people trying to get back on their feet and brag about that instead of lining themselves up with giving free handouts to a woman who is just too lazy to work hard for her 8 kids.

Marie, I always enjoy your posts and I see both of them that you have posted on this page about this. You are so right; there is always too much to do, especially when the kids are still young. And it annoys me to no end that Kate is so busy posting about walking on water, that she has no clue what REAL moms and homemakers do.

Just this week (or was it last) I vacuumed walls and ceilings in most of the main floor. And I will have to do it again in a month because fall is coming and that is when buggies like to come in the house and spin webs and whatever. Kitchen and bathroom floors need scrubbed, kitchen sinks tubs and showers need scoured, furniture needs to be moved at least 2x a year and vacuumed behind and underneath... we never hear Kate talk about the real stuff, only multiple posts about her pool and her cars and how her laundry confuses and upsets her.

You ask about tasks and errands and hobbies... other than picking up or dropping off for grifting, she has none. She doesnt post about mending childrens clothes to save money, or ironing, or hemming slacks and dresses... one time she tweeted something vague about painting a bedroom but it sounded like she was merely barking orders at the real painters. She doesnt grow a vegetable garden or a flower garden or herbs; she doesnt walk the dog; she doesnt do charity work or volunteer work. She doesnt even hunt up coupons and sales for her CouponCrap place that she works for.

You really hit the nail on the head with your two posts; by the time REAL moms and homemakers get done with jobs, errands, cooking, cleaning, cuddling on laps, there is no time for 60 tweets in a few hours.

My own kids are grown and gone, i only work part time right now, Hunny Bunny actually does all the yard work, and *I* have time for this, but not for tapping out on a phone as much as Katie does.

There is an article on Gather about the beach trip. There is a picture of the Kate and the kids lined up on the beach. It features Rockette Kate, replete with side view and bent knee. Very low resolution. The twins and 2 of the girl tups are to her right, and the remaining girl tup is on her left, with Kate's arm around her. The boys are hanging off the end, outside of Kate's inner circle. Sorry, I can't cut and paste, but easy to find on google.

No copyright across the picture, but the article does reference her blog for additional pictures. However, it is a pasted in image--not a separate file. Out of curiosity, I did some research on the copyrighting of photos. The rights to the images belong to the person who snapped the picture, unless they specifically waived that right:

“Even if a person hires a photographer to take pictures of a wedding, for example, the photographer will own the copyright in the photographs unless the copyright in the photographs is transferred, in writing and signed by the copyright owner, to another person. The subject of the photograph generally has nothing to do with the ownership of the copyright in the photograph.”
— U.S. Copyright Office, FAQ

In order to enforce the copyright, registration with the US Patents and Trademark Office is required. There is a $35.00 (can be multiple photos) charge for registration, and without it, only actual damages can be recovered--no legal fees. So, without the ability to recover legal fees, I'm guessing most attorneys wouldn't take the case.

That's better then, if Jodie was 13 and her sister 20- also didn't know about the stand-in work for Taxi Driver. I think both are good films but of course don't approve of child nudity.

I disagree with any form of child exploitation as well-- including nudity, although I don't have kids. I wish we would adopt Canada's Laws on this subject. I guess that's why most of us are here, right? Well, that and the greedy-grifty thing.

Anyway, we are all safe to watch, without any backlash from the remaining 3 attentive Sheeple. (Now that we know there isn't any 'questionable' content!) Yes, if Jodie was 14, Connie would have been 20/21 at that time.

Why do you need help getting kids ready for school? You get the list. You go to the store, KMart, Walmart, Target, Dollar Tree, you buy the items and you cross the things off your list. It's really a no-brainer. If you need to buy books, you search Amazon or eBay for used ones. It can save you a bundle. I have always gotten the kids ready for school with no help from anyone. You just do it!

I thought Kate was so organized that she wouldn't need help from someone at Party City!

Permanent, Tom Daley is the bronze medal diving champion from Britain. His dad recently died of a brain tumor and didn't get to see him in the Olympics even though he was struggling so hard to make it.

Someone tweeted him last week that his dad would have been disappointed he only got bronze. An awful tweet, though not the worst I've seen, but it got him arrested. I love Britain's firm stand that NO you will not say vile things like that to people. Watch if someone in Britain dares to harass a celeb again.

As they were waiting on line, Suri said, ‘I love you, I love you, I love you, Mommy.’ Katie gave her the biggest smile.”

Tomorrow is DH birthday and we're having his favorite salad.

I got this from a salad recipe book years ago, I think a book club Better Homes and Gardens book...

- Lettuce of your choice (I use leaf lettuce)
- 1 can jellied cranberry sauce, 1/2 inch cubes
- 1 can mandarin oranges, drained well
- Cashews or peanuts, your choice
(I like unsalted cashews)
- Yellow raisins
- Sliced bananas
- Turkey or chicken, cubed (both work great)

Dressing:
Orange yogurt
Miracle whip or mayo
Curry

Mix curry powder to taste (I use 2 tsp) into orange yogurt and miracle whip or mayo, even proportions. If no orange yogurt, I smoosh up another can of mandarin oranges and mix into plain yogurt. Drain them first. Set aside for flavors to meld. I have made dressing the day before then mixed well before serving.

For salads, a nice presentation is to lay the lettuces in a nice flat serving bowl. Add cranberry sauce cubes, banana slices, cashews, mandarin oranges, raisins and meat cubes in some kind of pattern. I usually put them into sort of a bullseye arrangement, in a big circle on top of the lettuces.

Serve dressing on the side with a ladle. Dressing is thick so you don't need much per person.

It's a sweet, tart, crunch-chewy salad that gets meat, nuts and fruit in a tasty way. I don't think it's very low cal due to the dressing.

The curry is the key. It think it's the kind of dressing you can mix around according to what you have in the pantry at the time.

AMD,

LOL - I know it sounds like nothing would go together! The picture of the salad in the book was plated and put together in a very visually pleasing way and I guess that is what caught my eye.

Definitely not low calorie, but somehow it works. The curry dressing is my favorite touch, and love the way the nuts are crunching and the raisins are chewy.

In recent years we've started using mostly yogurt to avoid the mayo/miracle whip (although it was good, but geez, calories and fats)

It's a dinner salad so there is nothing else with it but maybe a piece of naan bread.

On the same tangent, we have started making our salads with fruit and veggies combined. Apples, blueberries, feta or goat cheese, zuchinni, cukes, peppers, nuts, wheatberries, barley.

Sort of one-bowl wonders. Easy on the clean-up!

What kind of salads do you like?

We've come a long way from the 1950s meals I used to eat.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I think the public has a right to discuss public figures, don't you? I do NOT think they have a right to harass them. I think there's a huge difference between public discussion, of which there is a ton about Tom Daley, and making that poor kid feel like crap by harassing him directly.

Twitter is a unique form of free speech in that it's allowed people to contact celebs indirectly. In the past you would have to write a letter to a fan club and the odds they would ever see it are slim. People have abused the privilege to tweet celebs directly.

Tom Daley is BARELY an adult, he just turned 18. I don't think anyone deserves that. Be you age 18 to 88. Twitter can be a fun, great thing when used appropriately.

I disagree with this notion that just because you are famous you deserve a life of misery and harassment. If you would like to make aspects of your life public then the public has a right to comment, within reason, but Tom has kept his dad's death extremely private. I also think that a diver couldn't possibly foresee that he would be come famous like this. That's not a popular sport and few of them become famous like Tom has. It's not like he is an actor trying to get famous. He's just doing what he loves and all of a sudden he became this huge celeb out of nowhere.

And again for gosh sakes the kid is 18.

Spinach or garden salad as a base. Top with sautéed new potatoes and slices of bacon and tomatos. Wowser, I wasn't able to read the entire article as a Washington Post account is needed, but I did see this:

Winter pointed to the docu-series “Jon & Kate Plus 8” as an example of average people whose experience in raising eight children made them “a kind of expert in parenting.”

“Jon & Kate,” which debuted on TLC in 2007, became a ratings powerhouse, drawing 10.6 million viewers at one point, when the couple’s marriage fell apart two years later.

Critics lambasted TLC for profiting from the family’s troubles.

O’Neill, who was instrumental in developing “Jon & Kate,” acknowledged that it was difficult deciding whether to proceed with the show in the midst of the divorce. Yet the decision came down to what the family wanted to do.

“They always had the opportunity to stop,” she said.

Setting a tone

In many ways, “Jon & Kate” set today’s tone at TLC. During the show’s five seasons — it was canceled last year — the network rolled out a string of family-centric docu-series, including “19 Kids & Counting” and “Sister Wives.” Each show delved into atypical families.
