The Farmer's Wife: When a story of surviving motherhood isn't force fed

We're a little late with our final Farmer's Wife post due to some other Kate-ish news coming up, but better late than never!

Realitytvkids.com will be organizing an official summer "book club" screening of The Farmer's Wife. Watch Part 3 this week and discuss it as you go with all the interesting folks here. If you missed Part 1 it can be found here and Part 2 here.

Audrey, Abby, Whitney and Juanita, 1996.

David Sutherland never intended to find a woman like Juanita. However when he did, he didn't succumb to the temptation to write the script for her, give her labels, define her. For three years, he stepped aside and let Juanita just be Juanita. What resulted was not just a beautiful story of a wife's devotion to her husband and one woman's strength in incredible adversity, but a poinant portrait of motherhood. Juanita listened to her children, was there for them as much as she could be, worked hard to improve their situation and give them a better life, and always showered them with positivity and love.

In part three, Juanita takes her family's destiny into her own hands by furthering her education and getting a job in crop insurance. Due to her hard work from the ground up, the family's hard times finally seem to turn around as this wonderful documentary comes to a close. Today, although Juanita is divorced and no longer lives on a farm, she reportedly still works in the farming sector on the business side, helping out the farmers of Nebraska. Darrel reportedly still lives and works on the same farm featured in the documentary.

Reality T.V. today loves to "define" characters. Kate is the "mother of 8," and has made a career out of this definition. We prefer authenticity, which Sutherland was lucky to find in a little town in Nebraska in 1995.

Whitney, Audrey, Juanita and Abby, on a family trip to Mexico, 2009.

I agree that the divorce timing was suspect, we knew they were having trouble. No ease dropping because she would just scream in her driveway oblivious that people could see and hear her. Some neighbors got in the habit of turning up the volume of electronics in their homes to drown out her screaming. I know people are appalled with the divorce timing but for me personally it was Christmas. I remember seeing no cameras or crews on Christmas Day and thinking well at least the children have a private personal Christmas only to later find out they faked Christmas for television earlier so they could have a television episode. It does not go unnoticed that when they had the very high ratings it was due to watching them implode on television and divorce, thought that was a very sad commentary on the public at large. Understand we are a development where both work outside the home but behind the scenes we are working to change laws in Pennsylvania. Westbrooke.

Sorry guys- not Blue (IT challenged) and reading from last post up.

Kate had mentioned a while back about starting her own business, if all else failed. Well it did. Crickets are chirping, and after a year she has no regular job other than CC, twitter, and "grifting full time."

I do agree that she is once again, testing the waters with her "catering business" and does not have a clue what is involved. Sure, some fans might buy from her intitially out of curiousity, but overall, she is not a chef by trade, and does not seem to have a clue about what is appealing (ie- dinner posted last night). I agree with some, it may have tasted better than it looked, but when you have a business in selling food, it should look and taste good. I do find it funny that she just bought/grifted that industrial slicer at the same time posting pictures of it.

She is so predictable. Has burned so many bridges, and can NOT see her having the patience to do catering AT ALL. As others have noted, she is just not that popular locally, does not like hard work, and has very little patience for anything other than being in front of a camera and barking orders. These traits will not fair well for a local catering business.

I do hope the kids survive her, as she can not let go of the spotlight, reduced as it might be, and maybe she would be better off selling a book about her admitted narcissism. AT least that would be real.

Next Week: Car Detailing by Kate - in your own

Third Week: Organize your Closets and Bathroom Cupboards with Kate! (I will do a blog piece on all your high end beauty supplies and clothing
I will help myself to try out)

Fourth Week: Run with Kate! I'll swing by and pick you up each morning and we'll run 26.2 miles around your neighborhood. (Gated communities only, please.)

Yep, a concept a week will keep Kate's mind going while she wastes away in her lonely house.

Permanent - Out in CA, those who receive food stamps (or CalFresh as it's now called) can use their food debit card at the Farner's Market now. So there is change happening, slowly.

My nutritionist had a good saying: No food is bad. Food is just food. But some food is nutritionally better than others. It's really about reading your food choices and making better nutritional choices. But if you want that Rice A Roni or Hamburger Helper every once in a while do it. Just be mindful of the portion size and nutritional costs.

Amy2: the problem with Kate starting a business, catering or any business, Kate does no research, has probably not contacted a financial person for advice, has never taken a class in small business. Kate thinks cause she is Kate Gosselin, reality personality, that, that alone will sell anything she does. Kate forgets, that most if not all of the people before her, started out test marketing, their products or did a survey to see if, what you are gonna sell will sell or if their is a need, for the product. Kate thinks she can just jump right in, like picking up where K8 left off. And that the money will roll in, by the thousands. Ask any small business person, how they started. It will be anything from taking some classes on starting a business at a local college to reading books on the subject to knowing someone giving them pointers or advice to partnership. Kate proves that she does not like running hands on things. Geez, she can't even manage her own kids by herself, and she wants to run a business. She just recently twittered that a so call friend who is selling or sold her Inn, should be a red flag, on how the economy is going in your area. If people are not going to a place to eat, what makes her think they will order online food that they can get locally in a few minutes. Not wait maybe an hour or more to deliver. Sorry people Kate does not have it in her to 1. follow through on anything, 2. research, what you want to do, 3. take classes if necessary, 4. Kate can't even take care of her kids, let alone run a catering place out of her home, with employees, 5 then there is the legal stuff: is the property zoned for commercial business, permits etc. I'm sure Kate knows very little about this stuff, but cause she is after all Kate Gosselin, she knows everything. Bethany (of Skinny Girl) she is not.

And gee I'm sure kids who request rice crispie treats would be oh so happy with leftover cereal treats instead. Not! If it was Khate whom had requested something from them it was not exactly what she wanted it would be red spoon time. But they have to praise her Krappy treats even though they are nothing like what they wanted?

Why even bother making this if you don't have the right ingredients?

Martha Stewart makes a cereal treat with Fruit Loops and 3 other cereals. It's quite dense, as her recipe calls for it to be smushed into a small pan so it's quite thick. I've never tasted it but I watched her make it on her show one day many years ago. I remember she had to work pretty hard to cut it into squares, but she swore it was delicious.

Call Me Crazy,

Oh, LOL, sorry! Didn't mean to wake up the 'no, no, no' in you... :-)

I actually can't remember the author. Although it *** might *** be Lawrence Block in his Bernie Rhodenbarr novels. Bernie is a 'professional cat burglar' and he is friends with a cop who is slightly, ever so slightly crooked.

The cop is a shuffling, grizzled old detective whose name escapes me at the moment. He talks in 'old grizzled detective' speak.

I could be wrong about the author but Lawrence Block is a perennial favorite. He can make even bad guys lovable. In addition to Bernie, the cat burglar with a heart, he writes a series about a hitman with a heart, a hitman code of ethics and a conscience.

Improbable but fun to read.

Actually, there are so many detective writers that I can't be sure if it's Block and if the states are Jersey and New York...

Rest assured, those old grizzled detectives only talk like that in novels. Not in the real states!!!! LOL

New Jersey is vindicated!

Another new author I just discovered: P. J. Tracy.

It's a pseudonym for a mother/daughter writing team who write crime novels. The characters are hilarious (again, old detectives) and the plots are well thought out. There is some high tech computer geek stuff in some of the laters ones.

I just read 'Off The Grid' and went back to library to get three more.

I'm too tired for another manic phase.

I just found a local restaurant supply store, went in for the first time, I had been looking for square plates for awhile as well as oversized salad bowls. I heard they were having a sale. They said you don't have to be a member but if you're just a private resident there are no returns.

Well I found my bowls and plates and am stoked, yea!

I walked by the meat slicers, the cheapest was $650 and the most expensive $1800.

I searched the entire store for the to go coffee cup things Kate says we should buy. Couldn't find them, they don't sell anything like that. What a stupid tip.

Yeah, I think so too. She is throwing that out there waiting for banks or whoever to beat down her phone with offers of financing. But she doesnt want to 'cater', she wants to run a delivery service. In Kate speak that means she will drive someone else's meals around for one week, one delivery a day, and then go on media tours to talk about how much work it is 'organizing and masterminding' all of her ungreatful minions who have taken over the delivery part. Because she will be oh so #busyandexhausted.

Our dinner tonight is a combined effort of hubby and I. I chopped a variety of vegetables (big chunks) and added them to a ground beef and ground pork mixture. Shaped it into a flat, round, thick patty on a mesh grill. Hubby cooked it in his smoker grill.

The edges get crispy brown and the center is a meatloaf kind of texture.

The abundant veggies stay slightly crunchy. Last minute addition of shredded cheese melts on the top.

Not a photo quality meal. No way. But, oh so comforting and, dare I say, yum!

Also, Kate is thinking of going into catering?!? What brought that on? There is nothing she makes that sounds original or appetizing, especially when she shows pictures of it.

Off topic now. My older grandson just started kindergarten last Monday. My younger grandson, who is four, is having a difficult time dealing with it. He was used to him and his brother being in the same school together and sometimes the same classes (they are only 17 months apart).

Now the little guy is crying when his older brother gets on the school bus, being disruptive in preschool saying he wants to be with his brother, etc.

The boys are close, but does anyone have any suggestions as to how to handle this?

Are there any caterers or restaurant people out there by the way besides Chef and......blanking on who else said they were a chef, shoot.

In high school I had a job for two years washing dishes for a catering company that mostly catered on site at a historic house that was opened for weddings. It was a family with three kids, including twins. Even at that young age I came out of the experience realizing how darn hard that family worked, how little time they had with their children even though the children lived right in the house, the long hours mostly on weekends, how many things went wrong requiring them to trouble shoot constantly (we even had a fire once in the middle of a wedding), how tough they struggled sometimes financially.

It bugs me as I know it does others Kate acts like she can just DO things just like that. She has no understanding for how hard these people work. No one just wakes up one day and opens a catering business just like that.

Tamara said...

I'm sure this will be an unpopular opinion, but I don't see Em Tanner as any kind of hero or winner. Did she send free stuff to the sextuplets born months before the Gosselins?

Em Tanner stuck with the Gosselins too long, but I'm always open to anyone who is willing to admit they made a mistake and tell the truth about what happened. I'm not going to hold something against her that happened years ago. She obviously feels different now, how long does she have to pay for her association with Kate? I just don't believe anyone who breathes the same air as Kate should be vilified. Also remember Em Tanner never said a darn thing about Kate, it was Kate who sought her out and started trash talking her. I think people were pleased that Em Tanner didn't take the trash talk and calmly responded with the truth. People were relieved that finally someone stuck up to her and didn't let her lies and garbage take control.

Regarding Kate and catering: she couldn't do it. My younger sister started catering about 12 years ago. It was a lot of hard work and alot of time. However, with her ethics, hard work, and commitment, she had a good reputation and a good business. So good in fact that she fulfilled her dream of opening a banquet center in 2010.

It's new, and she is slowly gathering a following and getting good publicity. Each year, business is picking up.

Kate not only could NOT do this, she doesn't have it in her to take on the debt my sister did while the business was getting started and growing, much less to stick it out and pay it off like my sister is.

I'm so proud of my sister, and Kate could NEVER do what my sister did.

She has no clue, her food does not look appetizing, and she definitely does not pack enough to satisfy the kids' appetites and help them get through the day.

If she had a "ghost chef", she would have to pay them, and we all know that's not going to happen. That's why she does her own "recipes" that are so pathetic.

Admin,
From the age of 13 to about 40, I worked in the restaurant business. My step-mom owned a restaurant when she met my dad and I began working for her on the weekends. My step-mom is currently an instructor at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. I have worked for some really talented people and had some great opportunities. A number of years ago I was featured on a segment of "The Best of..." that used to be on the Food Network.
So, let's just say that I know of what I speak when I say kHate DOES NOT have what it takes to start up a catering business. She does not have a clue as to what it would entail. She sees the "stars" on FN and thinks she can do it too, she can not. But, like Admin said, most people don't realize everything the business entails: the long hours, the stress and the unbearable heat (which is why I finally left the biz).
I wouldn't worry, you fine Berksonians, this is just another scheme/dream and she will move on to something else in no time!

That's a real nice hook--lunch packing for big families. If it were decent enough, like she had a ghost chef basically running it for her, developing the lunches, and someone who knows how to use a camera with a barrel on it taking the pics, she could make a real go of this. I wouldn't even ask for royalties.

*************************

I guess I'm missing something here, but what is all this fuss about making lunches? You pack a sandwich, some chips or other nutritional crunchies, perhaps some yogurt, carrot or celery sticks, a cookie or fruit, and juice (or give the kids milk money). Kids don't need a chef to develop lunches. Mothers have been doing this for years without relying on blogs or photos to do this. It goes with the territory, so to speak. You know what to pack and you pack it!

Wait, Admin, was that a joke about Kate having a lunch blog? It's been a rough day at work and so I took it seriously. I'm hanging my head in shame for not getting the joke.

I worked full-time for most of my children's school years and packed many lunches (before they got old enough to pack their own). I used to look at all of the wonderful and creative lunch ideas, but really I was too tired to really fuss and the kids didn't care that much. Sandwich, crunchy things, fruit or vegetable, a couple of cookies and money for milk. Sometimes I'd make cracker sandwiches, which the kids thought were fun but were probably only because we were out of bread.

The Kashi go lean stuff would make for one VERY hard rice krispee treat to bite into. That stuff is like rocks biting into. I like it because I like a really tough, hard crunch to stand up to greek yogurt I mix it with. But just in a bowl with milk it's awful to choke down.

The beauty of that dessert is how light and fluffy it is. Kashi is essentially granola. I mean I guess it makes an okay treat but it's not a "substitute" for rice krises like say maybe a generic version would be. It's a totally different dessert.

I just remembered from my dishwashing days one of our inside jokes that would always make us belly laugh hehe good times, thanks everyone.

So we washed a TON of dishes and naturally a few would slip by that weren't perfect and the owner one time was asking us to please watch out for plates that aren't clean. My coworker, being a smartass teen, said you hired me to WASH dishes, you never said I had to CLEAN dishes. This actually gave the owner a huge laugh and from then on whenever anyone complained about a dirty dish we would throw them back with the joke "They're not clean, they're just washed." We even made shirts!

Haha oh how fun working can be.

She has a completely separate woman write the homeschool posts and most of them time someone separate writes the Tv/movie posts. Because you just can't be good at everything.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Glad to see you Love My Grandsons!

In situations like this, I found you can never go wrong with the validate/bribery combo.

For similar situations I would make sure my little guy knew that I understood why he was upset and why he felt the way he did, telling him that it's ok to miss your brother. However..... acting up at school and getting naughty reports from the teacher is not ok. So young man, how about for every good report I get from the teacher, you can pull out a prize from my (dollar store items) grab bag when we get home?

So this doesn't go on forever (lol) maybe after several days of good reports he can get a special certificate from the teacher or an ice cream cone, etc. playing up that he 'graduated' to big 4 yr. old behavior and that he's closer to being a kindergartner like his brother.

Awwwwwww, I so miss those days of little snuggle bug guys! Give them extra big hugs from all of us when you visit them! Have a great trip and hope I could help!

NJGal51,

Yes, she writes the Monkeewrench series. I'm reading 'Live Bait' right now, about 70 pages in.

Haven't figured out how they got themselves the name Monkeewrench (or why it's spelled with two e's -- kee instead of key) but apparently in the previous book there was a killer whom the media named the Monkeewrench or Monkeywrench killer and in this book they are trying to figure out a new name for their computer company so they are not associated with the murders.

They must not change the name because this is 2006 book and I read 2012 book yesterday and they still have the Monkeewrench name.

I did find out why Grace always wears leather riding boots - pretty creepy and logical reason.

Plot twist that is interesting but when you read books out of publication order it's hard to keep the plot line straight.

The main two characters right now are Detectives Gino Rolseth and Leo Magozzi. The author writes HILARIOUS dialogue for them. They are the kind of cops I'd like to work with if I were a cop. Seasoned, irreverent, dedicated, jaded cynics who have seen it all.

Of course, not being comfortable with guns, being afraid in the dark and being not much over 5'2" would "prolly" keep me out of the police academy! ha ha

If I could skip right to the detective job I'd ace it because of all the cop novels and TV shows I've seen.

Two things: the others who worked hard to earn the gold shield would bump me off in an undetectable way and hide my body, and I'm guessing my long experience with books and TV crime wouldn't qualify me..... darn...

Shucks, Mariska Hargitay makes it look so easy... sigh...

I worked in food service jobs from the time I was 16 until several years after I graduated from college. In fact, I worked part time as a waitress the first 2 years I taught school (And, sadly, made more money waiting tables parttime than I did teaching). Food service jobs are not easy. They are hard work for long hours and low pay. It's a lot more complex than slop food on plate, carry plate to table, take money. There are safety regulations to remember, orders to keep straight, difficult customers to soothe and satisfy. There is no way KK could do the job. She'd go nuts (nuttier?) in about 10 minutes. If something isn't 1+1+1 = 3 she can't keep track of it or cope. So -- no catering business for KK.

Oooh! A new author for me to try! I've never heard of P. J. Tracy. I'll have to look those books up at the library or on Amazon. BTW -- for those who still like to buy DTBs, or who are looking for books not available in e-format, abebooks.com is a wonderful resource for used and out of print books. It's a world-wide book exchange that has numerous listings. I've used them for years and was turned on to them by a friend who owned an independent book store. They're very reputable.

wayward, thank you so much for your advice! I already have a little bag of dollar store stuff that I've been collecting for the boys. Sometimes, I am just too close to the situation (emotinally involved) that I can't see the forest for the trees!

Thanks again, wayward, I really appreciate your suggestions!!

Interesting.... I just caved and looked at her cereal snack photo on her website.

I'm convinced she has someone coaching her... The format for this recipe, along with the photo of dish + ingredients is copied from other successful food blogs.

Someone told her to check out other blogs and she apparently did. Amazing....

The pan of treats is not centered, lighting is poor, table layout could be more enticing and the pan bottom is clipped off. She obviously still has a way to go with the photo skills.

But darned if she isn't acting like she learned *something*...

Did that BlogHer conference have classes for the folks to attend? Maybe, just maybe she actually figured out she needed instruction in order to help her with her big dreams.

I still dislike her and always will for her personality and her treatment of others... well, for a whole long list of things actually!

But she is making wee tiny baby steps of improvement. Which makes me think, incredulously, that she *might* be taking advice from someone.

She has 3.6 million miles and 400 billion lightyears to go, but she's so damned stubborn she might keep pushing until she drops. She's prolly too stupid to quit.

Grandsons -- Another way to help the younger one to cope might be to plan little adventures with him while his big brother is in kindergarten. It needn't be anything elaborate -- a nature walk, a special game or book reading session -- something to get his mind off missing his brother. He'll adjust soon, but those days while he's adjusting can be brutal for all concerned.

In my previous post that's supposed to read "way too many eggs" and "big chicken coop in the sky". Fingers were going too fast for my eyes to keep up with.

Reunion was great. There were a couple of classmates that I had really wanted to see that had RSVP'd that they were going but unfortunately didn't make it and that was disappointing, but we had a great time. My husband and I ended our weekend by going to see Frankie Valley at the Cape Cod Melody Tent last night. We're going to see Darius Rucker there on Thursday night. Looking forward to that.

Good luck to your friend's son with regard to MMA. We all know freshman year in college is challenging but this school requires more of the freshman because of the type of school it is. But the companies that hire the graduates think very highly of the education that they get there. I believe their job placement rate is above 90%.

I'm going to one up Kate in the homemade food department. My grandson was at my house at 7:15a.m. today as my daughter had to be to work by 8:00. We made homemade pancakes and he always helps. He usually ends up sitting on the countertop and no I don't cover it in garbage bags. I just clean it when we're done. This afternoon he helped me make dinner which consisted of making homemade barbecue sauce for our grilled chicken, homemade mac and cheese and grilled corn on the cob. Last Thursday, he and I also made homemade brownies and homemade blueberry muffins. I'm fortunate I have the time to do that. If I worked full-time, I wouldn't be cooking like that all the time, but like Kate, I'm at home. I don't understand why she makes such a big deal out of cooking. She's got the frigging time.

I have to say I did miss some spirited conversation while I've been gone the last few days.

SweetTart,

I vote to keep this blog apolitical, as you do.

I too refrain from expressing my politcal opinion here for exactly the same reasons. Like you I am very passionate, and happen to be on the exact opposite side as you.

I haven't posted anything about any candidates because I feel like this is not the appropriate place to do so.

I value you as a fellow blogger here and would feel badly if we, or any of us got into a snark fest about the candidates or the parties.

The sheeple and trolls cause enough trouble here, IMHO.

Of course, we are all free to say whatever is on our mind. But the passion of political beliefs combined with the anonymity of cyberspace and the lack of face-to-face expressions, tone of voice and body language lead me to think that there could be some nasty misunderstandings and kerfuffles.

Politics is just such a flashpoint subject.

Just my 26 cents....

I've come to some sense of peace about politics, and it was a long time a'coming...

Short and simple:

I have my opinion and you have yours.

I'm not changing my mind and you aren't changing yours.

I don't care what your opinion is and you don't care what my opinion is.

*** Therefore, using Spock's logic, there is no need to discuss the subject. ***

LOL - Sweet Tart, please know this is NOT, NOT, NOT directed at you personally.

When I say 'you' above I am referring to the collective you, the royal you, the universal you who is the other than me.

I used to feel compelled to share my views with others in order to show them the error of their ways. (Was I arrogant, or what?! Arrogant yes, but also young and foolish - LOL)

Then I realized NO ONE cares what I think! LOL Seriously.... no one else cared, and it was hubris of me to think I could change anyone's mind.

It was an "aha moment" - I let it go, and the peace has been profound. I vote in November and hope for my party to win. Well, actually I hope that the lesser of two evils wins.....

Wishing peace for all who find politics stressful.

Now the little guy is crying when his older brother gets on the school bus, being disruptive in preschool saying he wants to be with his brother, etc.
****************
Ah, poor little fellow! I'm sure he is feeling the pain. What I have found that works is positive reinforcement charts/prizes. I use some type of timeline and attach a racecar or something the child loves (Thomas the Train, etc). For every increment of time the child is not acting out, his car moves ahead. When he gets to the end of the road/track/etc. he receives a sticker or some other type of reward. At the end of the week, if his car reaches the end of the road five times, he is allowed to pick from the "prize box". (nothing huge or expensive, they love that chintzy little stuff :) Hugs to grandson, it has to be tough for him. Good luck!

Good luck with the glycine sticks. If it works for you, bulk powder is a fraction of the cost. Bulk powder equivalent of the sticks is 3/4 teaspoon.

I have noticed that my sugar cravings have sharply decreased. Since the only change I have made in the last few months is the addition of glycine, I google "sugar cravings" and glycine--and, yes, there are some references.
*****************
Hi there Ex-Nurse,

Thanks for the recommendation, as I see the sticks were 24.95 with shipping...that's pretty steep per month.

OK I tried my first stick mixed with water last night. Well let me preface by saying that while we are on summer break from school I like to tackle a jigsaw puzzle. yes, I am crazy wild like that. Anyway, I sometimes stay up way too late doing this, so I didn't take my glycine until like 12:30. So I went to bed in the hopes i wouldn't be up reading at 2:30 AM...I did awaken a few times but I am pretty sure I went right back to sleep!! I woke up at 7:50 or so, feeling just a big groggy. But this is probably because I've had the first good night's sleep in forever.

I want to thank the person who recommended glycine in the first place. I am going to try to get to bed a little earlier tonight and with the help of glycine, I may just receive eight hours of beautiful rest. YAY! No Lie! Honestly!

The Kashi go lean stuff would make for one VERY hard rice krispee treat to bite into. That stuff is like rocks biting into. I like it because I like a really tough, hard crunch to stand up to greek yogurt I mix it with. But just in a bowl with milk it's awful to choke down.

I love Kashi Go Lean with fresh strawberries. I tried to make krispy treats with it once ... and it was like eating rocks. You need a jackhammer to get it out of the pan. I had to throw out the whole thing.

I've been surprised the past few days to see drive-by posts about political candidates. Doesn't bother me when it's an observation, but in most cases, I think they're designed to make (score) a point. I'd hate to see that escalate.

There's plenty we can talk/read about here that isn't available elsewhere; likewise, there are lots of blogs that feature conversations about politics/political figures. This is a safe haven, where camaraderie reigns supreme. But much as we'd like to say we'll maintain a high level of decorum, things turn sour so quickly when the stakes are perceived as being so high. So..I'd vote with you on keeping the discussions apolitical, ergo, peaceful.

My two cents, adjusted downward for inflation and the fact that I've not yet gone blue.

LB said...

It's so ironic that Kate is saying she supports Pink and does not like the Piazzi taking pictures of the children either. Look who's talking! Wrong, wrong, wrong, Kate! She is the one who makes the children pose for the camera so she can take pictures to put on her twitter and blog for public consumption. She makes them available for picture-taking so she can keep herself relevant to the public...it's no different! It's creepy when a fan asks Kate to send them pictures of the children. Isn't that crazy? Why do they need pictures for their personal use? What do they plan to do with them? When I ride the bus, sometimes there will be tourists taking pictures or videotaping. If they're in my line of view, I tell them not to take our pictures because we did not consent to it. Or I move out of the camera's view if I can or cover my face with something because I hate strangers taking pictures and not knowing what they plan to do with their pictures. These children has no protection from their mother of that not happening.

I got curious when everyone was talking about the boys still wearing Velcro shoes. She has them making faces for the camera which I'm sure was Kate's idea as Cara, Collin and Joel are the ones who does not really fall for it. In the front porch pictures, they are still in the same pose in the 2nd picture so I knew she asked them to make the faces. Now I think that is weird that they are being set apart from the girls. The girls get to wear 'grown up' shoes with real laces and bright colors--very colorful and happy colors. The boys' shoes are just meh to me. Nothing special about them. If she was able to buy Nikes, she could have sprung on Puma or Adidas for the boys---they have real laces, great colors and designs for boys too! I feel like they are the forgotten people in that family and I feel sad for them.

Berks Resident -- Do you have a Kindle? One of my favorite authors (mystery of course) is releasing her backlist for Kindle -- Julie Smith. She has several series. My favorites are one featuring a San Francisco attorney, Rebecca Schwartz - funny, snarky, well-written engaging -- and one featuring a New Orleans female police detective named Skip Langdon -- humerous with lots of local color and NOLA history, both before and after Katrina. The books that have been released so far are all under $5, and a couple are freebies

I am definitely going to look for the Smith/Schwartz series. I love Kellerman, Cornwell, Coben, Greg Isles writes a good book too. Thanks for your recommendations, I will let you know how I make out.

I think Kate sees it as a spokesperson opportunity. 8 kids in school, busy mom (well...), the show must go on. On paper it could fly and while I don't think Kate brings a positive association to any product, I think some company's interest might get piqued.
Which makes me wonder if Kate still has her manager, Ms. Carson. It would seem to me that this is the manager/PR person's job to troll the waters for opportunities. Kate seems to be working all the angles herself lately.

*******
This is very common and it's how recipes have been passed down through the ages. A great example is Italian American cuisine, where Italian Nonas would adapt their recipes to what they could get their hands on in America. What's tradition for Italian families in New Jersey is not in Italy. Spaghetti and meatballs comes to mind, but that's certainly my idea of a hearty, comforting Italian meal.
Sometimes substitutions work and sometimes not. Baked granola bars are more like what Kate made, and would not be anywhere near Rice Krispie treats, and I think that's where you see her limitations.
She didn't have a suitable sub for RK's, so OK. Make something else.
At least she didn't try to use Grape Nuts. I thought I was grinding my teeth down the one and only time I ate them, and, it took a while for my hearing to come back after the deafening crunching going on.
Not really, but you know. It was LOUD.

Mountain Dew Mouth is very common in Appalachia. The acid and sugar rot the teeth, but when you live where premature dentures are almost inevitable, there's a terrible disregard for dental hygiene. Losing teeth is just expected.
Kids get hooked on it as infants, with their mothers doing just this--sticking it in their bottles.

Ask a doctor before using in children under 12:

Okay in kids 6-12 with Adult Supervision:
Extreme Congestion Relief (Sinus Spray)
Zicam Intense Sinus Relief (Sinus Spray)

Not Recommended for Children under 12 (Choking Hazard):
Liqui-Loz

So to be fair to Kate, there are some Zicam products that you can give to children without a doctor's recommendation.

She is no longer in the media/public eye. Kate has no real presence beyond the few sites/blogs that talk about her.

I'm sure the companies have no clue regarding her history, and are happy with the fact that they are getting ANY publicity at all. After all, it doesn't cost them a thing, and they see her as attached to Coupon Cabin. For them it makes sense from a marketing perspective.

And yes, I UNDERSTAND she is a nightmare; however, the companies they may not know her history and to them it is JUST BUSINESS. They may gain a few fans, they may lose a few customers, but it is all about the bottom line.

And if companies are willingly paying her to tweet for them, well, that's their problem, not mine. Again, it's business.

There's no way Ziacam paid her to tweet what she did given that many of their products are not suitable for children. She is trying to suck up to them for freebies or a promotion deal. Many products are not recommended for under 12 kids. I've been using glycine for about three weeks now and I really have noticed a difference in my sleep. I'm still not sleeping through the night but I am sleeping much better and I'm getting a more restful sleep. I just ordered more of the sticks.

I suspect that many of the posters here are well-informed and well-entrenched in their opinions. Sometimes respect slides away when passions are involved.

Want to see your comment published? Follow a few simple rules:

1. Do not use Anonymous. Pick a name (click Name/URL to type in a name) and stick to the same name.
2. Anonymous insider stories should be emailed to us directly (in confidence). They will not be posted here unless we can verify the validity, such as with photos. This is not to discourage legitimate insiders from speaking out, but to guard against all the fake stories out there.
3. No insulting other posters or picking fights, refusing to let things go and move on. Stop with the snotty comments--they will be rejected. Treat people here like how you would talk to the person you most respect in your life, it's just pleasant that way.
4. No trash talking other blogs/bloggers here.
