The New York Times explored the issue of posting children's photos online in this revealing article from 2009. A must read.
Popular Mommy blogger Eve Vawter also wrote an excellent article about the issue on Mommyish.com, quoted in part here. We like her common sense:
"Kids try on their mom’s shoes. This happens every hour of every day in every house with kids. I did it, you did it, our kids have done it. There is nothing wrong with that. But posting a picture on the internet, of your 11-year-old’s bare legs, her toenails pedicured and painted, clad in peep-toe satin and glitter heels, it’s just plain creepy. Kate Gosselin doesn’t know every single one of her Twitter followers personally. She doesn’t know who is glancing at the photograph and saying “Cute, my kids did that” or who is uploading the photograph to some terrible child exploitation website. And by posting this picture, she is inadvertently sexualizing her 11-year-old kid.
It can be argued that child sex abusers can find any photograph of a kid “sexy.” That even the most innocent picture of a kid fully dressed and standing there can be exploited by child predators for nefarious purposes. And all though I agree there is nothing wrong with a kid trying on her mom’s high heels, looking at the picture of Mady it’s obvious to me that posting it on the internet was a bad idea. It isn’t a picture of a kid being silly and playing dress-up, it looks like a slightly menacing sexualized photograph of a girl standing, her legs apart, teetering helplessly on too-big heels in a darkened room. And Kate Gosselin didn’t need to post it, but I suppose it can also be argued that Kate Gosselin uses any excuse to exploit any of her eight children for attention and publicity, whether good or bad, to feed her gaping maw of a fame hole."

Instead, this morning, she's back on twitter, with a tweet about how the "children" requested to sleep in and have a family do nothing day. More bs, yes, so no church (as if), doubt they're still sleeping, and since they're all home together, look for a tweetfilled day. You know, the boys are lucky she ignores them.
It would be really healthy if she gave twitter a rest today, healthier if she took it private. And I truly hope Jon is compiling a dossier on this incident for his lawyer; it may not get before a judge, but it (pic, tweets, article links) should be duly noted.

Hi all. Hope everyone is having a great weekend. It is beautiful here. Spent a lovely day in Provincetown(the last town at the tip of the Cape) with my best friend yesterday. Good times.
I have to agree to agree with all of you. Kate doesn't get it. No, there is nothing wrong with your kids clomping around in your stilettos. My youngest daughter did it all the time. She was actually quite good at walking in heels by the time she was M's age. But I would never dream of posting that on a social site to people I didn't know. And that is where Kate screws up on a regular basis. What your kids do or say in your home should stay in your home. That is supposed to be their safe haven where they are protected. But with Kate as their mother, they are not. And it will continue because Kate thrives on controversy. That's all she has left. I also agree with the poster who said sometimes if feels like we're feeding the beast, especially on Twitter. Twitter seems to be Kate's lifeline and that seems to be where the rag mags pick up their stories. And we all know Kate loves any kind of publicity.
Dr. Phil was on The Talk the other day and they were discussing the picture Jessica Simpson tweeted of her three month old daughter in a bikini. It was an adorable photo. However, it should never have been tweeted. That is a cute photo that should stay in the home. But I couldn't believe Dr. Phil's response. He said we had become too politically correct. It was just a photo of an infant in a bikini. No, Dr. Phil. It was the fact that her attention seeking mom put it on Twitter. You never see A-list celebrities putting pictures of their kids out there. Yes photos are taken of their kids out in public but they don't tweet pictures of what their kids are doing at home. These kids are minors for crying out loud.
With regard to Shoka, I'm of the opinion that he is with Jon. If there is 50/50 custody, why in the world would Kate keep the dog.

I was talking about the picture to a friend who is a therapist that counsels sex offenders. She made quite a disturbing point:
“People need to realize that sex offenders aren’t all Men. Some are 12 and 13 year old Boys. I use the term Sex Offenders because it is probably quite wrong to refer to a teen (or younger) offender as a Pedophile. Kate has just made Mady even more unsafe in her own community.”
Another reason Kate shouldn't be posting pictures of her kids online.

Kate maintains that if she took a picture of Mady in sneakers (and posted it on Twitter) no one would comment. Does that not beg the question, "why would you do that?" Who would even form that thought as a defense? "I think I'll take a picture of my daughters bare legs in sneakers and post it on Twitter!" My point is this: Either she sees Mady as a toddler and saw nothing wrong with the photo, or she is pimping Mady out aka Kardasian-style! Both disturbing thoughts.
Here's another concern for me: Kate maintains her twins are in the dark when it comes to the Internet, I don't buy that for a second. They know their mother has a website, that she is endlessly on Twitter, and shows up on ROL occasionally. And, what 12 year old isn't computer savvy? I wonder if Mady protested and said to her mother, "don't you dare put that picture on Twitter!"
Sadly, if this episode reaches a defense of herself on television (taking the bullying route), I suspect Mady would be at her side, saying "no big deal," towing the line for Kate's new bullying agenda. This would kill two birds with one stone for Kate, "I am a victim of cyber-bullying, and isn't my daughter pretty, she's got talent too!" And, when asked if she thought this photo would cause such an uproar, I can hear her answer in my head. "Honestly, I saw nothing wrong with it, she was just playing with my shoes, what kid doesn't play dress-up?". "This is exactly why we should be back on television, so people can see how much fun we have at home, our fans really miss us, right Mady?"

The thing with people like Kate is, the more she talks about how happy everyone is, how much they all love doing things together as a family all she's doing is I think she's not only trying to convince everyone else who doesn't go along with her lifestyle and how perfect it is but she's more than likely trying to convince herself as well.
And the more you babble on about how wonderful things are the more likely you are to believe them. That's what she's doing pure and simple.
And naturally her sheeple will believe her because she has photographic evidence. Well, here let me think. I can't tell you how many times as a child I smiled for a picture but it didn't mean that I was really happy but it's just something you're taught to do, look at a camera a smile. Which definitely is what Kate's kids are used to.
If they were all so blissfully happy and carrying on she wouldn't need to take pictures all the time to prove it because it would be true and she wouldn't have time to Tweet about it.
And my guess the reason the basement is the mess that it is, is probably due the fact that Kate doesn't pay attention, she doesn't want to and doesn't care either. Have you seen the episode where she tossed the basket into the living room upon leaving, came back the basket was gone. The kitchen sink hose she basically strangled because she didn't want to deal with it. Chances are someone else took care of that for her.
Remember her folding laundry line of help? Now then why is she always in the laundry room? Probably because she's now forced to do things on her own. The basement is a mess because she is willing to let things go because there is no longer a film crew to view the mess therefore like everyone else she feels safe to allow her home to become this dumping ground because hey, she's no longer on television she the kid's spaces within the home no longer are demanded to be prestine.
And her constant organization has nothing to do with OCD or anything of that nature. It now has to do with the fact that without a regular schedule of things to do, places to go, people to see...what else are you going to do but reorganize?
And frequently lots of times kids can be easily manipulated into, "if you do this, I'll give you XYZ, or we'll do XYZ," but after the kid has cleaned you can easily say, "Oh I'm too tired to do/go to XYZ now. Maybe next time. But that's for your help though."
To go a step further, she put another pic of her kids on twitter this morning. Whether the pics are sugary sweet or sexual, she uses those kids to keep her name out there. She uses those kids to further her own agenda.
It's all about Kate, ALL THE TIME. Why do you think she is twitter silent when their other parent has the kids? She thinks those kids owe her a living. Period.
I wonder what those kids think of their mom only twittering non-stop when at the house with her, and then she is twitter silent when the kids are away?

Khate didn't 'mastermind' anything. All she was thinking about when she posted the pic was ME ME ME ME. Aka what she's always thinking about. She only saw HER shoes that she thinks are beyond fashionable, that she wore at her big wonderful fashion show (hahaha) in NYC and how. Her daughter wants to be like HER. So once again, it was all about KHATE, 8 days a week as Ringo would say.
She knew exactly what she is was doing when she posted that, she even made a comment that she (M) "has the legs." She wanted to show not just the heels but the legs as well.
As for the stance, I think that is something she has been taught as a means to elongate the core, and it makes the butt stick out as well. Also another trick if you notice at the news desks and so forth the more polished (Robin Meade) ladies even sit with their arms on the hips (or away from the body) so as not to make them look plump or distorted by having them squeezed up against the body, or if the same color, making the entire torso look large. I had never noticed that until my sister (who has worked on TV, locally) told me about it. It would appear that she is passing these tricks onto her daughters. They work, that is why the picture caused an uproar.

I agree with you. I think she is in a state of severe depression where she alternates between sadness, denial, and anger. She is starting to lose some of the lifestyle she loved so much, and it is killing her inside. It has been a year, and the unthinkable (to her) has happened. She did not get a media job. Nothing, probably not even an offer. She is stuck with 8 kid she eventually will not be able to support in the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed. I have heard from locals that she has had to cut way back on her "help", she's shopping for groceries at Amelia's (the discount grocery store where most of the items are past their expiration date) when she really wants to be shopping at Whole Foods, she's dressing the kids in used clothes instead of their brand-new, match-matchy stuff. The downhill slide has begun, and there's nothing to do about it. She lashes out by stirring up trouble (that picture), then makes herself out to be the victim, looking for pity. Then goes straight into denial mode. (Happy, happy, happy!) What kids are thrilled to be cleaning the basement? Does she really think people would believe that when she announced they would be spending their day organizing the basement, the kids said, "Yaayyyy!". No they are grumbling and whining, just like everyone else's kids would be. This saccharine portrait of their life is so fake. These are not Stepford children. they get grumpy, they fight, they cry, and some days they just aren't going to be happy. Her version of life just does not even resemble reality, and that's scary.

Dump a bunch of people in a confined space for long periods of time -- even very nice people -- and conflict and discontent will arise. Siblings don't even require the long periods of time. Sitting at the breakfast table time is sufficient.

The bottom line is this, her mother, for whatever reason, has damaged her daughter. Mady may love the attention or think she wants the attention from her peers but kids that age can be vicious. Kids that age have a long memory and this may stay with her through middle school and beyond.
Kate has set up a "perfect storm" bullying situation for Mady. This is a woman who wants to speak out against bullies? As many have said, it is natural for our kids to try on our shoes and clomp around. It's even common for people to share those pics with their friends.
The problem in Kate's case is that she hasn't learned that what you show 5-10 close friends whom you trust isn't the same as what you show 100,000 tweeter fans/nonfans. As many have said, I don't think this was deliberate on Kate's part. I just don't think she has a clue. She doesn't stop and think before she does something. That's a pretty narcissistic trait, IMO.
I said Kate should go private on her twitter. Maybe a better thing to do is to have a public twitter and a private one that only your close friends and family have access to. (I am giving her the benefit of the doubt - yes, she may have some left.)

There is no freakin' way that basement was cleaned properly and organized in one hour. It was a colossal mess.
If the earlier poster is saying locals are reporting she is bargain grocery shopping and cutting back on the help. If I was experiencing economic distress, I wouldn't spend almost a grand on a meat slicer.

I am down to one male guest now (my nephew). He is downstairs studying.
We had a full and active day here. Hubby cooked 45 lbs. of meat. (Pulled pork, polish sausage, chicken wings and bacon). The small amount of leftovers were packaged and sent back with the guys to their Purdue apartment.
Where they slept, sprawled on the floor of the finished basement, kinda' smells like a locker room. Maybe a vinegar spray??

I hope I have added some great kids to this generation....one kid married to a Naval officer, another kid working on her MBA...another kid wants to work with the deaf (already is doing so in college), another kid has started her third year working in a church soup kitchen...(all of those kids also completed college degrees or are in college)...none have weird piercing or tattoos either, lol..

"My kids requested a sleep in day" translates to "I slammed down too much wine last night and there's no way in hell I felt up to doing the church thing."
I'm just not so sure that this was Kate's attempt at publicity, no matter if it was negative, or to generate sympathy because the haters are after her. In the past, she fought with Tanner to get attention, or the Philly guy. I can't imagine that she's that stupid that she would deliberately involve a child in this.
I think that Kate just doesn't THINK. She thought it was cute and the sheeple would aah and ooh about a kid posing in her mom's shoes. The fans all back her, saying that all kids do this. Yes, they might play dress-up, although I think that maybe 12 years old is a bit old for this, but who knows. However, her tweet about taking a picture in sneakers just proves that she and the sheeple are on the same dysfunctional level in their thinking ability. Take a photo if you want, but good gosh, don't post it! Her suggestion that she should take a photo in sneakers is mockery, and she really doesn't understand the point of all of this -- DON'T POST THE PICTURE! What's next? The twins trying on their training bras because it's "cute?" I also think that Kate doesn't see these girls as growing up. In her mind, the twins are still little girls playing around in mommy's clothing, and therefore the sheeple, who keep asking for photos of the kids, deserve to see these cute moments. Mom needs to read some books about adolescent girls, their needs for privacy, and developmental issues that arise at this age. Did Kate have Mady's permission to post this?

We're having the most gorgeous weather here -- warm, sunny days, cool, crisp breezy nights. Perfect high school football weather. Fall in Lancaster County is the best time of the year. It's now called Justice, and it's still the same crap. Sizes start at kids' 6, "sexy" but apparently still bought by moms out there. If you really dig around in the store when they're having great sales, you can find some cute tees for little girls, but most of the things you wouldn't allow your teenager to wear.
I skimmed the comments on E. By the sheer number, a LOT of people have seen this picture of Mady. There is no way she won't be teased.
Kate had no qualms discussing their bra shopping etc so she doesn't know where to draw the line. I think maybe the twins ( or Cara) will have to tell her. Already Cara doesn't seem to like posing for photos ( nor does Colin) but the girl tups and two boys seem ok with it- it's all they've known- and Mady seems to revel in her beach & make-up pictures.
Hope those kids go outside and play in the beautiful sunshine- it's a very 'fresh and clean' day. Why not pick a rainy day for the basement ( which I'm sure Kate contrived most of the mess in!) I don't think that even the Bobsey Twins, the Happy Hollisters, the Brady Bunch Nor any other family either fictional or non-fictional lead such a happy, happy, happy life as the Gosselins. We we a family of 7kids and I never once remember any of us skipping joyfully through the house singing and farting rainbows once we were done cleaning. In fact I think we all probably headed outside to be "out of sight out of mind" in case mom thought of another chore to be done on a beautiful day.
On another note, now we know why the kids sit on a line to watch TV and/or movies, the couch and TV placement in the basement seems very odd. Normally one would have the couch facing the TV. Oh wel, this is Kate we're talking about.

Oh! The Happy Hollisters was the first chapter book I read ! It was maroon hardcover iirc. I loved those, as well as the Bobbsey twins (probably seem quite racist now with the accents used by Dinah and her husband) and of course loved the Bradys ( lots of 'secrets' came out about most of the cast!)

I just can't understand this woman. I am a mother and a grandmother, as many of us here are. WE have common sense and know the dangers of the internet. Schools were telling us about it during teacher conferences (although she didn't pay attention, she was tweeting). They sent home papers with my daughter explaining that she would have access to a computer at school, and would need to have access at home or be taken to the library. But they wanted us to know the dangers of it. She was in 3rd or 4th grade when we got our first letter from the school about student use of computers. Therefore, I know Kate's kids are exposed to it already.

Kathie Lee at least can speak coherent sentences. Her diction is fine. She doesn't use a zillion ummmms, and "honestly," in her sentences. Those things drive people nuts when listening to Kate (in addition to the III, ME, ME, ME). Kate can't talk. She has no conversational skills, plus she has no idea what's going on in the world. You have to be up on current events to be a talk show host. Kate would be too lazy to do any kind of research or keep up to date on what's happening in the world around her. She only knows happy, happy, happy, in her existence.
She also can't be spontaneous. Everything must be scripted for her or she'd screw up big time. Can you imagine the bloopers that would come out of her mouth?
I buy my kids clothes at Target or Land's End on sale. Sometimes The Children's Place, if I happen to catch a good sale.
I like Land's End clothes because they hold up pretty well (I've got two daughters 2 years apart, so the younger gets her sis's hand me downs, although she also gets a few new things on occasion as well). They also don't try to make the kids look like mini Disney teeny boppers. What is it with trying to sexualize our kids, especially our girls, at so young an age? Like I tell my kids, you will be an adult far longer than you will ever be a kid, so slow down and enjoy being the age you are. Why on earth would I want to rush that?
I have to say, I loved the baby stage and toddler stage but the elementary school age is perhaps my favorite, especially 3-5th grades.
Now I need to go clean up after Hurricane Buddy, our lab/pit bull mix "toddler". We've been really busy this week and he hasn't been getting the play and exercise he needs and today he took it out on the kids books in the family room.

Grandsons, your rant is justified! Yes, we care more about the after-effects of this than Mady's own mother.
Apart from being computer savvy, the twins are in middle school now. When my kids went, already, there were some who smoked, used pot, engaged in oral sex, drank, tried auto-erotic asphyxiation, and the dress code had to be enforced to keep the girls from dressing, well, like Kate. It's not a happy pretty fun fun fun world in most middle schools. The twins go to a good school, but some behaviors seem to be universal these days among some. I'm not saying this pic will prompt this behavior in the Gs, but it was shocking to me to hear all this from many people when my kids went. Quite a difference from elementary school. Decent parents need to talk to their tweens about all this, and the health programs usually cover a lot of hot topics as well. We can only hope ...

Maybe that is exactly what she did do. Her inner rage about the controversy could have gotten to her. She probably went around throwing things and saying "how dare they question me? Basement would be a perfect place to do so, since the kids were probably upstairs in their rooms.

Agree with all. Kate is stupid and doesn't realize it's the posing of the legs, with the manicured toes, the lighting, plus the implication she could be naked, is what makes this a suggestive picture.
What causes the outrage is this isn't an anonymous picture out there on the net. This is on a twitter account of a D List celebrity, who knows their tweets get picked up by rag sheets at times and now has been picked up and published in multiple countries, identifies the 12 year old, who's location is well known, thus making it a 'dangerous' picture!
That basement is a disgrace, there's no reason why it should be in that unorganizedish state. These are not infants or toddlers that can't pick up after themselves, me thinks they're left to their own devices often and aren't made to tidy up after themselves. FYI, the big couch and the TV stand off to the side of the room, if you look at the wall in front of the couch it appears there's a TV hung from the wall in front of it, you can just see the black frame of it.

From the old shows it seemed she likes to sleep in till at least 8AM ( with 8 small children awake), have coffee at hand made by Jon and needed Ashley to come over because she was exhausted. Fido, thanks for a serious question to the conversation. Maybe it would have been better. To me what is wrong is the bare legs and also the spread legs. So maybe with covered legs and covered feet, it would be much better. But I have always seriously asked why Kate cant walk with her knees together? it is probably one of the reasons they put her in a long gown for that little runway, as she really does walk normally with her legs too far apart, which leads to the 'clomping' effect.

I took a long look at the "messy basement" pic. At first glance it looks like a disaster area, but if you look closely, it's a staged mess. I don't think a private photo of a child should ever be posted on Internet. But I also think Kate's complete lack of talent in photography made things worst, adding a certain sense of "depravity" that surely wasn't there in reality when an 11 year old just step in her mother's high heels as the latter was unpacking. It IS hard to define but I think that most of us do recognize it when we see it. A few years ago, a Calvin Klein advertisement campaign picturing bored looking kids in their 20's in more or less ""sordid" environnements (I think it was CK's, though I'm not sure...) got the same negative reaction from the general public. People got the impression that the campaign was promoting "heroine chic". American Apparel had similar problems with one of their campaign because the quality of the photography implied something that was far from wholesome. Sometimes, what a picture implies is more important then what it shows.
I give Kate the benefit of doubt here, for this one. She probably wasn't thinking of child sexualisation when she took this picture. But she should have realized once she looked at it that this is what the picture looks like.
But she's Kate Gosselin, a child exploiter. In fact, I believe she DID realized what she had in that camera the minute she took a look at that picture. And that's exactly why she decided to post it.

Like most of us, and unlike Kate, they probably do not want to be in the public eye, It is quite possible to go about your life and try to
get things done without being public about it. We have had many discussions about that here. I just don't think it is fair to criticize anyone when you don't know what they are or are not doing.
Katie, on the other hand, puts it all out there, although I think most of what she says is b.s.
So I have just sat down for a quick break finally! My teen and I have been on the go all day..State Park where there was a Viking Ship on the lake so she could take photos for photo class to the store to buy her Nana a bday present (ex's mom) to the camera store to buy a leash for her lens cap to the store for her cousins bday present to a field of sunflowers for photo op to Petsmart for the dog ;) to the grocery store to the house to make dinner while she napped (not homemade; Wegman's made the chicken)..finished folding laundry I started while she was not up yet (she does her own) and now I have to go help her with geometry. And you know why I had to run nonstop today? BECAUSE I AM DIVORCED AND I HAVE A FULL TIME JOB. We spent yesterday at my niece's college family day events. So that left today. So Kate can suck it. She has no idea what it really takes if you are a full-time working mom of even one kid. Oh and that basement was a disgrace.

I see your point about her not letting the kids outside so they could enjoy the weather.But how safe would they be outside? She lives in an isolated area, anyone could roam her property, ready to pounce. If kids were outside, one was taken and Kate is inside, that kid would be long gone before she could even get outside.
Buying that house in the middle of nowhere made all of them sitting ducks, imo. Scary, huh?
If she did get outside, what's she going to do..attack them with a label maker? She's really compromised her kids' safety, one by being on a reality show, and two,constantly twittering about them and keeping weirdos interested in her kids.
The safest place for those kids is locked inside the house.

I can't remember where I heard or read this but it was a comment about people like Kate who tweet constantly. Don't remember the exact words but basically it said:
Only a narcissist would believe that the whole world actually cares about what they are doing every minute of the day.
Also, someone commented on what Kate would be doing a year from now. I don't know about a year from now but when I saw the clip of that interview coming up on Monday with Dr. Phil and Dina Lohan my first thought watching how Dina was acting was that will be Kate in a couple of years.

It depends on where you get them. I found some incredible Maddens on clearance at an outlet for $40.00. If it's not grifted, I don't think Kate would pay full retail price for anything.
I want to respond to a comment Piggy Pie made at #87, stating that Kate "was unable to conceive naturally for a reason" . My husband and I were unable to conceive naturally but with help we now have a wonderful son, and we are good parents. All my nieces and nephews on my side came to our family through adoption, and they all have great parents. The two sets of parents involved were also unable to conceive. Being unable to conceive has nothing to do with whether or not you will be a good parent. I don't want to sound angry because That's not what I feel. I feel hurt. I think Kate is a lousy parent and it has nothing to do with her inability to conceive. Infertility is one of the more painful experiences to go through (and I have a husband with cancer so I know about painful experiences). Ability to conceive has nothing to do with ability to parent. Sorry if I upset anyone. I tried to let go of this all day but it bothered me too much.

I believe that the reason the basement was in a mess is because Kate dumped everything out of the baskets...not that the kids had it in such a mess. That is so typical of her behavior...I still remember her throwing everything from the twins room down the stairs.
Dogsandkids, I am very sorry. Adoption is terrific and I did not mean to insinuate that everyone with fertility issues shouldn't have kids. I should have worded it better or made a disclaimer.
I don't believe Kate actually had trouble conceiving because they got treatment very early in their marriage.

Kate mentioned at about 7pm EDT that they were preparing to go sprint outside. They had ALL day to go sprint outside. I'm assuming this is after dinner-is she now telling them that they have to exercise after they eat in order not to gain weight?
Also, it's getting close to their bedtime. Does she know that you don't exercise just before going to bed.

Dogsandkids, I'm sorry you were hurt by that comment. I'm sure that it was not meant as a broad statement regarding all couples that cannot conceive. I took as a snide remark directed at Kate Gosselin only.
How wonderful you were blessed with a son, as well as your nieces and nephews. Sounds like you have a very loving family.
I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's cancer. I know from personal experience with my family what a difficult situation you are dealing with. God bless.
I really doubt if Kate was unable to conceive without the help of treatments. I do think she very carefully planned her HOM pregnancies though and manipulated everyone to do what was necessary in order to make it a HOM pregnancy.
