TLC busted over 'Breaking Amish'

Eileen O'Neill: "We are the No. 1 nonfiction company in the world, so we're not going to do anything to take away from that."
Reality T.V. Kids: "Oops."

TLC's hottest new show next to Honey Boo Boo child is about a good ole fashioned Rumspringa! TLC touts the show Breaking Amish as a group of young Amish leaving the community for the first time. But some impressive sleuths have helped made headlines after digging up some interesting information on the cast. In particular, cast member Kate (no relation to our Kate)

is reported by those who have seen her to drive a car, dress non-Amish, and work in a Ruby Tuesdays in Lebanon, PA.  She was also shopping around modeling photos on a web site more than two years ago.

Other reports say that Rebecca and Abe, portrayed as strangers who just met, have a child together, and  Jeremiah has been living outside of the Amish community for as many as 14 years, and is divorced with three kids. Oops, TLC! Time to bring out the damage control team hibernating since Kate Plus 8 was canceled!

Pass the Swiffer!
Most of the commenters here who watched the show posted that they didn't really like it. Maybe you all unconsciously sensed something unauthentic about it.

The same day all this is hitting the fan, good ole Eileen O'Neill, president of Discovery, gave another disingenuous interview in which she acts like, who me, what, people are upset about Honey Boo Boo? Oh well that's their opinion! Eileen goes on to claim she would never let her reality t.v. subjects be uncomfortable (which is why I guess she sued the pants off Jon when he left the show?) and that she is very proud of "Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo." No really, she used the word "proud."

How about this quote:
O'Neill: See, I don't think we're laughing at them. I think we're leaning in to be surprised and entertained.

Is she serious, of course people are laughing at that poor child and her family. How delusional can she be? And of course she is using the child for cheap laughs and of course, money.

I miss doing recaps. Maybe I should recap Eileen's interviews. They are that ridiculous.

Looks like the reality outing is becoming that proverbial downhill snowball. US magazine yesterday featured an article about Heidi and SPencer Pratt admitting that the fights on "The Hills" were faked. I didn't read the article and didn't watch the show, but I gather it featured a lot of knock down, drag out fights between Heidi and Spencer and other cast members?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 4

You know what's annoying about Eileen's "they are entitled to their opinion" response to Honey Boo Boo? It's a cop out. Of course they are entitled to their opinion. We're asking you, as the president of Discovery and responsible for this show and in many respects this child, why their opinions are not wrong.

Bueller, Bueller????

Darn! Left a comment on old thread just as new one comes up.
Anyways if anybody reads it, I'm sure you'll all figure out that I omitted, by accident, a few words...meant to say 'I WANT to go fishing while all my kids are puking...did you all get that on film-gate'.
Kate has a lot of 'gates' doesn't she?

The Amish show has sucked from day 1. You could totally tell that it was fake just by the terminology they all used. Just commented about it with hubby last night. They use words that my 16 year old uses and, if they had been true Amish ( like a BBC or Natl Geographic one about a bunch of them sent to England) they would never hear these terms....skank, it sucks, etc..... Just my take on it but I found it very hard to believe and won't be watching any longer.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 6

In the two minutes I did watch, the blonde chick was being catty about the brunette saying she wasn't all that everyone talked about was nothing special.

Who walks into a first meeting and immediately starts bitching before they even know the person? I mean most people at least try to be nice in the beginning. It just seemed way too over the top catty for most people I know let alone Amish who have always been very quiet and polite whenever I encountered them in PA.

Speaking of the Amish, we once did a family vacation to Amish country. And I remember even then as a child feeling awkward about it, the way people would stare and take pictures. I found it so rude and intrusive especially when done to kids. I think that was my first spark of wanting to protect kids, even when I was a kid myself. :) I was only 11 or so.

I remember watching a show with similar premise years ago, and found it on imdb. It was called Amish in the City, 2004 according to imdb, and several young Amish shared a house in L A? I think? With several non-Amish same age. I remember reading in TV guide or somewhere later that the young people had all decided to leave the Amish community before being on the show, and three show portrayed it as if the kids were still trying to decide. But it captured authentic emotions, first time they were on a plane, first time they saw the ocean, things like that. I also saw on imdb that Mose, one of the young people, was also on National Geographic channel Amish Out of Order.
Re Honey Boo Boo, Saturday Night Live had hilarious parody interview with Honey Boo Boo and Mama last sat. Just go to NBC.com, look for SNL video clips, it is right there, Honey Boo Boo on Weekend Update. It ended with this sage pieced of advice from Mama: ”If you marry into a werewolf family, or fill your house with cat skeletons, call TLC and they will HOOK YOU UP with a TV show!

-------------------

It's surprising, but they do hear these terms. They don't live in a vacuum. They maintain stands at public markets; shop in grocery stores; give horse and buggy rides, conduct tours through Amish homes, do public banking, and I've even seen them at the McDonalds drive-thru. Many, particularly Mennonites, are cleaning girls in "English" homes. They do interact socially. Mennonites drive cars, have televisions, and attend high school with non-Mennonite kids. We have Catholic kids here attending Lancaster Mennonite School (it has its own website).

A few weeks ago there was a group of three Amish girls (Old Order, about as Amish as you can get), standing outside Victoria's Secret store at the mall, talking to some teenagers who were inside the store. It would have been a great photo op, but I couldn't do it. Too intrusive, but funny as heck.

------------

If what is being reported about the "cast" of this show is true, then most definitely this whole thing is a fraud in the worst way and TLC should be ashamed. It will be interesting to see if they come up with any kind of damage control, or if it's just going to be swept under the rug. Has it been confirmed that two of them have a child together, and that one has been divorced? Where was this reported? I believe that it was said on the show that one of the girls lived in Florida and had a DUI there, so at least they put that out there. However, TLC has some explaining to do about this whole thing.

Parent I linked in the actual post to the articles about it which have all the links you need. They even have court documents, myspace and facebook page screen captures, etc. Makes me wonder how we proved anyone was a liar back in the days before facebook! :)

They kind of remind me of the hater/sheeple outings! Only at least this has a justifiable purpose, not to "out" people but to show a network is lying to millions.

I just got cable and never watch anything on TLC. I'm new to this area so all the channels are strange/new to me.

I fell asleep while flicking channels and woke up to a Dugger kid saying he likes the cameras because he doesn't know any different. How sad is that?

"19 and Exploiting"

Then my kid came in the room and screamed "why are you watching TLC!"

To Whom It May Concern ...
There's a reason the book is taking so long to be released. It was supposed to come out in June. Then I promised August. The release date has been out of my control for the past four weeks and there have been four delays during that time, one of which forced me to take a lie detector test regarding information in the book, which I happily agreed to and passed with flying colors. I can't explain now but it will make sense very soon. I promise.

Nobody is more frustrated than me. I'm not playing games or deliberately trying to drag this out. I wanted this chapter of my life to be over many months ago. I'm doing the best I can with very limited resources.

I now feel pretty confident that we're inside of seven days until an announcement will be made and that's why I've begun to share small tidbits or teasers from the book. Believe me when I say that it will have been worth the wait.

I moved some information from gosselinbook.com to this blog because it has come to my attention that Kate's lawyers are attempting to have the web site taken down and I want to be able to keep that site to advertise the book's release.

Absolutely nothing would surprise me at this point but I think we're very close.

Parent, I too found the show disingenuous. It portrayed them as people who had lived far far away. The Amish live among us. My friend (the one who brought me to see Kate) lived next to an Amish farm for years. The families were very good friends. I see them every evening on the 30 bypass going back to western Chester County/Lancaster in cars because they hire drivers. They work here building decks, roofs, other construction projects. When I worked at Wawa in college the drivers would stop and they would all come in and get their lunch for the day.

Anyway, I predict Kate will use this to say see? I wasn't really a bitch, TLC faked it.

Never watched it after seeing the promos - it was clear even from those that something wasn't legit. Those of us who have lived in "Amish country" areas all of our lives become pretty attuned to the legit of it all - and this isn't it! Just seeing and hearing them briefly pretty much made it obvious. And the Amish aren't stuck in a bubble like people think - can guarantee many of them have seen and done a lot more than people want to believe.

I wondered how long it would take - TLC would have to be really stupid if they didn't think any of that would come out about the show. I'm sure they expected it...any attention is good attention, right? ugh

Interesting that her lawyers are trying to shut down his web site. I thought this was a free country still.

Christmas is coming early this year. He is making some announcement next week, probably the release date of his book. Thrilled he found a publisher which means they will promote the book. Katie the Grifter, you are toast. Everything we have been saying FOR YEARS is about to be PROVEN.

Off topic for a minute (sorry!) -

FIRST OT:
On the last post, there was a discussion about a sheeple posting someone's personal info, how did they get it, etc.

This morning, I was googling my kiddos (just checking that one of them didn't re-open that twitter account!), so I googled myself. Clicked on the MySpace link that listed the place I live...even though I do not have a MySpace account. Holy guacamole! My parents, brother, husband, and the first 7 digits of my phone number are listed. I get that my phone number is a published number. Not sure how they linked me to my parents & brother (I googled my married name).

SECOND OT:
Project Runway fans - what did you think? I did like the winning design, but, personally, I thought the illusion fabric should have been a shade of blue. Looking at the preview for next week, I am wondering if we have "jumped the shark".

Back to the regular thread...

I wonder if there is a question on the TLC job application that reads "Do you have an ethical bone in your body?"

librarylady said... 28

I'm wondering, though, if it's for real, if it might not be self-published?

Did anyone watch this clip on Pressi's site describing women narcissists? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=fQJhNjV8VHA

Kate is absolutely textbook. According to this doctor, only 25% of narcissists are women and they typically are very focused on body image and have eating disorders, use their children as their narcissistic supply since they see their children as extensions of themselves, etc.

I swear I recall a quote from Kate where she even called her children extensions of herself. Textbook.

I don't watch either show, so I won't be too helpful in commenting. I did see a couple of T &T's and that was enough to sicken me.

I have visited Amish country (Lancaster) a couple of times (I too sensed the voyeurism of being a tourist there) and enjoy reading about the orders. I have also read about the puppy mills and crime/drugs going on.They seem to be a popular topic in the media these days.

Anyone read Jodi Picoult's book Plain Truth (or see the TV movie of it) Also the film Witness comes to mind.

As for Kate G, last I looked she was eager to go to bed!

Read the Gymboree letter. If her 'paperwork' was sent to a multitude of companies, no wonder the tups had to nap 4 hours! Why did so many companies agree to this- it's obvious grifting. It makes their companies look bad IMO, at least after the 'lean' years when the show took off.
And what did they think about the consigning of their outfits?

OK, I'm going to have to go undercover for this post and I've got my flack vest on. I watch Honey Boo Boo. I can't help myself. I watched one episode to see what all the uproar was about and got hooked. Yes, they're exploiting the child and the family but it's the kind of thing that you just can't look away from. I keep tuning in hoping that they (the family as a whole) are really not that stupid. I will say though that Alana (Honey Boo Boo) is a smart little girl. She went couponing with her mother and was able to figure out which was the best deal with the coupons, etc. I have to admit that that did impress me. However, I vow that I will never, ever make June's "sketti" recipe as I do have some standards!!

I am under the impression he has a publisher if the postings at RWA are correct. Could be a bunch of lies, but tidbits shared came from the book in which the person said that publishing companies pass around book scripts. I hope he does have a publisher which will help if Grifty goes for his jugular. It also will help with the perception that a publisher would back his book rather than something self-published. So far the self-published books on Kate have been losers.

We did have an Amish family that always came to the farmer's market near where I grew up and sold bread. And my grandfather has Amish neighbors that give him vegetables. So I guess it's true they don't live in isolation.

But I think that's exactly the problem here. TLC is trying to paint a story of young people completely isolated experiencing the world for the first time. It's just not true and there is where I think it is very disrespectful to the Amish community to use their people like this.

Wow. I suspect this is going to get ugly. Just another reason to feel bad for those kids.

On one hand, I'd love to see Kate get her comeuppance, I really would. Bitch deserves to be called on all her lies, grifting and fraud/stealing.

At the same time I have to wonder how it will affect the kids. She says they don't have access to social media yet (yeah, sure) but once this goes public, it's going to be tough to keep it under wraps.

Exactly how will she explain this to her children?

Nevermind, I know how she will.

-The whole world is just jellus and a bunch of bullies.

-Anyone would have done the same thing.

-I didn't know *sniff, sniff* how we were going to eat.

-I HAD to grift matching outfits and leather sofas because there were bills that needed to be paid.

Etc, etc...

I hope she kept enough for therapy X8.

Actually I think that fan is right. It is no one's business. That is unless in that same year you told little old church ladies you're poor and need their generous donations. Then it sure as heck becomes our business.

And for all the millions TLC made off her, a mere 2 million after they pay all their bills isn't much for all those kids. And that's not just from TLC, that's from speaking engagements and endorsements too, so the money form TLC was even less. She should have been demanding way more money from TLC.

For Kate, Twitter is a god-send. She no longer has to spend time writing out those long form grifting requests. All she has to do now is hastag # everything she wants and hope it finds it's way to the company.
An even bigger bonus for her is that her poor little sheeple still feel sorry for her, or most likely want her attention so they send her crap that most likely gets thrown out with the next week's trash.
Seriously, why the h#ll would anyone want a 'Team Kate' pink plastic bracelet? That is so 2009. It's not like she's fighting cancer or anything. The mentality level of her sheeple just intrigue me.
This reminds me of middle school (and somewhat highschool) where the wanna-be's were idolizing the rich girl who had everything in hopes to be invited to a party or just be noticed by having a few bread crumbs thrown their way.
The sheeple serve no purpose for Kate other than to enable her greedy, grifting ways.
If you notice, Kate tries to hang with people who can move her to the next level not regular mediocre people.
Sheeple, she will NEVER go out of her way to meet you unless you've got a way to give her some celebrity status or a job in the 'industry'. Get over it and concentrate on living your own life to the fullest.

She really is evil and I take great satisfaction that she has destroyed her appearance with scammed money. No wonder she loved TLC---both deceitful.

I completely agree. She sounds like an idiot trying to defend her circus freak shows. She is responsible for moving TLC away from anything educational and reducing it to the lowest common denominator and she won't admit it.

Also no mention of one of the few shows that is actually well done and very sensitive, Britney and Abby. What, is a show that is respectful of its subjects not getting good ratings? Probably.

No twittering this morning, I believe this book is really the reason. Kate is really freaking out about the release of it, she's in panic mode. I'm sure she's doing everything possible to put a stop to the publishing and is in continuous contact with her lawyers, hence the conference call this week.

Aggiemom I agree with you that she'll blame everything on Jon.

Even some of the sheeple are having doubts about her. Methinks this book will be the beginning of the end for Kate.

I have to admit I haven't watched Britney and Abby except for the clip you posted on here because (forgive me for saying this, Eileen), I don't find them interesting.

She knows darn well the only reason people watched the show in the first place was to see how physically different they are from everyone else. After awhile guess what...they're NORMAL. That just won't do for TLC.

TLC stinks said... 70

The fact that even she admits she doesn't collect any child support now PROVES that it was all vindictive. It's not like she's come into any significant amount of money suddenly. Her financial situation has been the same for years--she's one rich bitch.

I watch Abby & Brittany on the site. I agree while I like the girls, it's just following the normal adventures of young adults. A few bits of how they do this or that differently. I thought it was just 8 parts but not sure now.I hope it is short-lived. They do say they hate stares and unsolicited photos and hold an umbrella out in public at times to shield themselves.

Abby and Britney are remarkable girls, and they've been raised since the beginning to tackle the world and never give up, and so whatever they need to do one works one hand and one the other. After you watch that for awhile, you see that they are normal young women who do normal things and have a normal life. Despite the fact that they are probably some of the most unique people TLC has ever had, their show quickly became boring. Ironically, they're just too boring. This is a good thing for them, but not for TLC.

Assuming the book exists, I do hope that there is an actual publisher somewhere in the mix. Self-published books just don't get any attention otherwise, and are not considered "legitimate" in the industry (or really, in the public, in general). This may sound like a stupid question, but how did Kate end up with all the money and Jon is now broke? Were they not split 50/50? If Kate has so much more money, how come Jon had to pay so much in child support?

Marie

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 79

Actually, ironically or not, the more money Kate had the more Jon had to pay because you're supposed to maintain kids in the lifestyle they are accustomed to.

If they tied up all that money in the house and blew it on other needs and wants there would be nothing left to divide up. I bet she could go through that 2 million pretty fast. Also Kate made a ton more money as soon as Jon left the show. She still finished up the show without him there, then did DWTS, then did Kate Plus 8, all money rolling in Jon wasn't a part of.

I do think though she would have to buy Jon out of his half of the house in order to get the house, however since they didn't put very much down in the first place I don't think, that wouldn't be much.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 80

I bet too that Kate was going to fight tooth and nail for all the money that she thinks she earned "on her own" during the marriage. Even though it's such a double standard because that's not how it works when mom is the stay at home mom. You still get half because you're recognized for your part in raising the family so dad CAN go out and work.

Since they settled the divorce so quickly, maybe Jon agreed not to fight over all the money she wanted to keep and just cut ties for the sake of moving on.

Sheri said... 81

Marie...

Kate plus 8, DWTS, speaking engagements etc. Kate was still doing the rounds after the divorce while Jon worked mediocre jobs.

KAT said... 82

Why did Kate file as an individual? Didn't they file a joint return? Weren't they still married?

Anonymous said... 83

Marie,
Jon was sued by TLC for breech of contract. TLC won in court.
Last I heard, he was STILL paying that back and it nearly drove him to bankruptcy. (if it hasn't already).
My assumption is that the breech was for 'future' profits from the show, since he went off on TLC and chose not to film, nor to let his children film he caused them money. Any money that was his from the divorce settlement went straight back into the coffers of TLC for litigation fees and contract fees, in addition to the $20k/month that was required from him for child support. It goes fast.
It was/is a financial mess which is why he lives where he does.

Anonymous said... 84

oops...actually I'm not sure if TLC won in court, or if they won through a settlement. Same other applies...

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 85

But remember, Eileen would never make her subjects feel uncomfortable.

Jon shelling out tens of thousands of dollars to fix that mess has a direct bearing on why he was not in a better position back then to have his children more than two weekends a month. I hope Eileen can sleep at night knowing that she helped keep these children away from the father they love and would wail for when he had to drop them off at Kate's at the end of the driveway. It took the man more than two years to crawl out of that hole and get in a position where he could get 50-50. There are some serious moral and ethical issues that Eileen is playing with.

Anonymous said... 86

Admin: It's all a money/numbers game for them. They don't look at people as human beings, they look at them as dollar signs. Kate fit right into that group until she started to get lazy and greedy. Her expectations are want caused her downfall.

Think about it - she went from Dancing with the Stars to a backroom fashion show fundraiser where she tromped around like moose in highheels and left in a hurry to 'get back home'. Bunch of bull, she wasn't there to support the underprivileged, she was there to make a name for herself - nothing more.
How the mighty have fallen and deservedly so.

TLC stinks said... 87

KAT, Hoffman just mentioned Kate so that's why it may be assumed she filed individual. He just did not mention Jon in his statement so I am thinking it was a joint return. The book is about Kate, not Jon, as he is targeting her grifting.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 88

Berks yes it's a money game. What's strange is that most other people don't try to pretend work isn't about supporting your family. If you're lucky enough to love your job that's an added bonus, but most people who win the lottery end up retiring. (Yes there are a few people who keep working but that's the minority). Why Eileen pretends this isn't primarily about the dollar I have no idea.

KAT said... 89

Stinks...oh I got it...I thought he had her "individual" return....

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 90

I assumed they filed jointly but it would not surprise me if greedy Kate thought it would be better to file married filing separately. Not one bit. I don't know any advantages to doing that, maybe someone can shed some light.

And yet she has the unmitigated gall to say this:

"The biggest challenge at my job with three networks now is to see the shows and see them in an early stage. So trying to pack that in around a lot of meetings is difficult, and I don't want to take away from the family."

If I may borrow a term from Bearswife from the previous thread, that woman is a bucking bunt.

Anonymous said... 92

Kate filing separately would fit into her "Mine all Mine" mentality. It would be interesting to see the tax return though. I actually think it's better for them however, to file jointly. I remember looking into it when I started my small business and it didn't make sense to file separate.

Michelle said... 95

DH and I file jointly, but the form is called "U.S. Individual Tax Return". That just means it's not a business return. You need to check the joint or married filing separately box. This 2008 return likely is a joint return for Jon & Kate IMO.

TLC stinks said... 96

Married taxpayers can choose between filing a joint tax return or a separate tax return. The Married Filing Separately filing status provides fewer tax benefits than filing joint returns, but taxpayers will need to weigh the pros and cons and decide for themselves which is the best filing status.
If you are married, then you and your spouse can file separate tax returns. The married filing separately (MFS) filing status is generally perceived as the least beneficial of all the filing statuses. That's because MFS taxpayers are not eligible to claim the following tax benefits:

Tuition and fees deduction
Student loan interest deduction
Tax-free exclusion of US bond interest
Tax-free exclusion of Social Security Benefits
Credit for the Elderly and Disabled
Child and Dependent Care Credit
Earned Income Credit
Hope or Lifetime Learning Educational Credits
MFS taxpayers also have lower income phase-out ranges for the IRA deduction.
Additionally, MFS taxpayers must both claim the standard deduction or must both itemize their deductions. In other words, one MFS taxpayer cannot claim the standard deduction if the other spouse is itemizing.

Benefit of Filing Separately: Separation of Tax Liabilities

Does it make sense to file separately? There is one clear benefit of filing separately. By filing a separate return, the taxpayer is solely responsible for the accuracy and payment of tax related to that separate return. By contrast, on a jointly filed return, both spouses are jointly responsible for the accuracy of the return and the payment of tax. A spouse who is unwilling to assume legal and financial responsibility for the other spouse's tax obligations should strongly consider filing separately.
The editors of JK Lasser's Your Income Tax advise:

"If you suspect that your spouse is evading taxes and may be liable on a joint return, you may want to file a separate return. By filing separately, you avoid liability for unpaid taxes due on a joint return, plus penalties and interest."
In other words, on a separate return, the taxpayer will be responsible only for the accuracy of that tax return, if audited, and will be responsible for paying the tax on that return (or any additional tax that results from an audit).
Married but Filing Separately as Head of Household

Married taxpayers may be eligible to file using the Head of Household filing status if your spouse did not live with you during the last six months of the year and your home was the main home of your child for more than half the year. Here's what the IRS has to say:
"You may be able to choose head of household filing status if you live apart from your spouse, meet certain tests, and are considered unmarried.... This can apply to you even if you are not divorced or legally separated. If you qualify to file as head of household, instead of as married filing separately, your tax may be lower, you may be able to claim the earned income credit and certain other credits, and your standard deduction will be higher. The head of household filing status allows you to choose the standard deduction even if your spouse chooses to itemize deductions." (From IRS Publication 501, "Married Filing Separately")
on their separate return.

Married couples can decide to file either jointly or separately when they file an original return for a particular year. Couples can change their mind and switch from two separate returns to a single joint return within three years from the due date of the original return (without extensions). However, couples can change their mind and switch from a joint return to two separate returns only by the April 15th deadline. To change your filing status, you will need to submit an amended tax return.

TLC stinks said... 97

KAT, so maybe they did file separately. Usually you do not. Read the part about tax evasion.

I checked out some of the links exposing the Amish show, and good heavens, those sleuths did some good work. If what is reported is true and there is evidence to back it up, TLC created a show based on scamming the audience. They never came out and said that such and such had a child, or that one of the guys was married and divorced, etc. etc., but rather they just presented it the way they wanted to show it. They didn't lie about it, but neither did they tell the truth. The implication is there that this is their first time in the big city, and TLC skirted the truth by presenting it as such. If it's true that the one girl and guy had a child together, and yet they have scripted a storyline with the two of them flirting and wanting to date, this really is disingenuous.

I was looking forward to this show to see exactly what they did with showing the Amish way of life and what these young people did when away from that lifestyle. Knowing what I know now, I'm not going to watch it.
TLC has no shame, does it?

Does anyone know the ratings on the first two shows? It will be interesting to see if those ratings drop now that this has all been exposed.

And there are all the cease and desist letters (admin, you got one, right?), plus the therapy fiasco, fighting over this book, plus many, many trips to court over child support and custody issues. She has to have spent somewhere in the 6 figures just for legal representation. How much did it cost her to have Robert Hoffman given a lie detector test? Thousands, I bet. That was just done to harass and intimidate him. She wants to bully him into backing down, and he won't. Good for him!
Funny to think that if she had been a decent person instead of a narcissistic b**ch, she could have avoided all those costs. I've watch both Amish shows: Breaking: Amish & Amish: out of order. Amish: out of order: is by far 100%, better than Breaking: Amish. Breaking, seemed way too staged, the young people not believable, that they are that ignorant of the outside world. For Amish to be that jump into drinking wine, and not have seen indoor plumbing, electric stuff, please, this is like a Jersey shores in Amishville. But this is TLC, ratings are everything!

On, National Geo: Amish: out of order is very real, shows how many of the young end up, shunned by their families for leaving, how hard it is to find and survive in a world so different from what they were told and grew up in, how education is need to get on in the world, 8th grade education does not go far. They do center around one ex-Amish, who show us his world, and the world he left behind, and how others from other Amish sects, cope with the outside world, and how they have no support out here, and how he was tryin to form a family support of some kind for the young that leave. It is interesting. I do not see any exploiting of kids, adults, anyone buying a new house, lavish trips etc. We saw how one young kid, went wild and ended up dead, how the Amish look at death. How some went back. There was no, ingnorance, about electricity, how the outside world worked, that TLC, thinks we the viewer think that is how the Amish are. Amish: out of order, has shown many levels of the Amish community, some are very strict and other are not. I vote for Amish: out of order, not Jersey Shores: Amishville. You suck TLC!

Ergo, we know kart's show was fake.

But what galls me is that she used that 'fake' to deceive mediocre folks into giving her money and freebies.

She MANIPULATED us and companies and dare I say, the entire world, into giving to her "for her kids". It was her "job". When we used to call her a grifter, we were right on point. She considered her job to be 'getting freebies'. I wonder if that job category is a legitimate one on an IRS tax form.....

She was stunned, stunned I say, when the courts recognized and validated Jon's right to be an equal parent to those children. She has ASSUMED that since she birthed them, and had taken Jon's share of the money, she could buy the kids from the court. I dont mean to say she could bribe a judge, I mean she thought she could financially outlawyer Jon and that was all that would be needed to strip him of parental rights. Remember how SHOCKED she was (several times) that the court didnt view those kids as her property to do with as she pleased?

Those here who are familiar with Kate's denomination; would her parents or fellow churchgoers 'shun' her for living a life so full of greed, grift, and outright legal fraud? I know there are some extreme churches out there who will turn their backs on those they feel 'have not been saved'. I have had elderly patients in hospice that died without son or daughter at the bedside because the parent was Catholic or Methodist or whatever and therefore was not 'saved' and 'true Christian' and the younger people 'did not associate with sinners'.

I dont want to start a denominational war here, I am just asking if Kate's father's church adheres to something like that. Would they cut their daughter loose if they were aware of her activities, merely based on their church doctrine?

I wonder if she is on the blower to her lawyers today crying and shrieking DO SOMETHING! MAKE IT STOP! MAKE IT GO AWAY!

Dmasy - You are so generous. I hope Stephanie appreciates you as much as we do.

__________________________________________
I will say- as myself, Butterfly, I watch HoneyBooboo. I like her. That child is endearing. It's not her fault she does't have manners. I am an optimist and I am hoping this show brings that family something good- whether it's money or the means to better their life another way, or the realization that they aren't 'poor white trash' and maybe can lift themselves and behave a little better (not trying to be rude). But that little Alana, she is so cute and full of life.

Breaking Amish- I only watched the first two episodes and I couldn't stand it. Now, after reading Admin's OP, i see why- it is fake! Beyond fake! I was so interested in learning about the Amish, too. I learn more about them from this board than anywhere else. I would like to throw something out to the board here- some of you mentioned the voyeuristic tours/tourists of the Amish, but I ask you, how else does the rest of America get to know the them if they dont go and take tours? I mean, people like me, from big cities like LA, have no clue they even exist and yes, I am one of those folks who thinks they live 'far, far away' from everyone else. I had no idea they lived among you! I would love to tour the Amish. I think it's educational. You disagree? I feel it's a great way to learn about another part of our American heritage and culture.

Hurry up with that book, Robert!!

Well Dwindle, I think she totally EMBARRASSED her parents and the congregation by not accepting those donations because they did not match or were not new. She was pretty hateful about that and it could have been a tipping point. Also she said her parents were not in her life because they did not know how to help. Could she have been referring to money?

I had not thought of the religious angle. Don't know anything about her father other than rumors.

Formerly Duped said... 127

Back when I was 'duped' at first I thought the family was struggling and the show would help their finances ! (ha!) Then I saw the product placement and the gifts and clothes and trips, and Kate's sense of entitlement seemed to spin out of control. It was Kate's treatment of Jon early on that made me see what cloth Kate was made from, but also the freebies and greed.

I LOVE this sentence from Kate's Gymboree letter:

"I held the number for a while and finally called! Kelly was very insistent – she knows my passion for Gymboree and understands that with eight children, times are tough!"

Who has a "passion for Gymboree"?! I didn't know how long that word has been big in the Kate repetoire. How many "passions" does/has that woman have/had? Other than easy money, I've seen her exhibit true passion for nothing.

It appears that her own words and writing is what is going to truly do her in.

Bingo. She's always been her own worst enemy. She cannot blame a single 'hater' or bully for her actions, as much as she'll try. After reading that letter she wrote to Gymboree how can she still deny she doesn't use her kids as a commidity? It's right there. She got pretty angry about that accusation too as I recall.

It's not revenge, it's justice.
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Ya know, Kevin and Jody HAD to have known a lot of this. A LOT. But when they spoke out, it was about the neglect and emotional abuse of the children, nothing more. They never hinted at any of this fraud and scamming, did they? Anyone recall anything like that, coz I dont...

Same thing with Beth Carson. Maybe the fruad and scamming got to be too much for her, but no one said anything. Well, no one would have believed any of them at the time, even if they HAD said something.

No wonder Steve castrated himself and hung on to her and her lip gloss for dear life, for as long as he did. He KNEW what a smooth operation she had going and figured there was a nice chunk of change and vacations in it for him, for as long as the ride would last. He was RIGHT!

Dwindle 122,

I have been forever curious about the reason she doesn't have a relationship with her parents. Even speculation has not given me any insight.

I would hope this book would shed some light... but then again, if her parents are the more sympathetic of the parents vs kart, I'd hate to see their name brought out into the public eye.

Who knows? I'm just idly waiting until when/if the books gets published.

From hour to hour I fluctuate between don't-give-a-shit and oh-can't-wait.

In the greater scheme of things, kart is such an insignificant little pissant, but she itches like a scab that wants to be picked.

Eeewwwww, and I meant it exactly as disgusting as it sounds because that's how I feel about her - disgusted.

TLC stinks said... 136

For me it was Googling J+K after finding them on tv. I thought they were likable and of course the little kids were adorable. I suspected they were from the Philadelphia area after listening to them talk on their couch and sure enough, they were from the area.
I was surprised at the skepticism even at the time. Remember, this is the first I'd ever known of them, but Google brought me to blogs etc. were many moms were in disbelief about how the G's could afford to put 8 kids in Gymboree outfits when they'd be lucky to score Gymboree at a second hand shop. And how did they afford so many PA attractions? And what about that Juicy Juice?
Sharp eyes caught onto the product placements and what amounted to a well-orchestrated PR campaign for PA tourism.
Eventually, I did start to cringe at Kate's treatment of Jon because it brought back some pretty bad memories for me, which is to say, Kate is an abuser and anyone who's been on the receiving end can spot it at 500 paces.
Otherwise, yup, waiting around for delivery people here. You know when they give you a freekin' 4 HOUR window to wait, and you wait the full four hours and now what you could have done in running errands, well that time's been pissed away and now your really upset and have to start making angry phone calls.
Yeah, I hate that, but, here I go!

In addition to being a bucking bunt, KK is also a braggart, a bitch, a bint and a boil on the butt of humanity.

KK may not have had Hoffman take a lie detector test. His publishing company may have had him take one to establish his veracity. Or he may have volunteered to take one on his own, for the same reason.

If KK did file her income taxes separately, it would be in keeping with her opinion that Jon's earnings and his inheritance were "family" monies but anything she earned from the books and speaking engagements was "hers".

Librarylady 76 -- I agree, it's unfortunate that self-published books can be written off so casually. Some of them are trash, but some are excellent. Established authors are being dropped right and left by their publishers and some are going to self-publishing e-books to continue popular series. Yet, in many cases, their fans won't find them. The "self-published" stigma remains, even after an author is picked up by a traditional publishing company, too, unless they happen to be named Amanda Hocking, LOL. A friend of mine wrote and self-published several books in e-format. They did well, and rightly so, because they are original and very well written. She has been picked up by a publishing company and her books are now being released in DTBs, but many libraries are still refusing to buy them. Sad, because they are enjoyable, fun reads. And while I'm on a roll and a bit of a rant, why do good, established authors get dropped and ones who write HORRIBLY continue to be published? I read the first book of what should have been a fun mystery series, and the whole book was one big grammatical error. It has to be one of the worst written, traditionally published books out there, but the series not only continues, the author has been picked up for another series! Okay, off my soapbox. Sorry for the rant.

O'Neill: See, I don't think we're laughing at them. I think we're leaning in to be surprised and entertained."

I just watched the clip of Alana, grabbing her belly and saying, "I showed the judges my belly."

People were clearly laughing at the child's antics as though she were some kind of trained monkey.

No matter how nice, loving and down to earth the Thompson family is, it's still exploitation.

I don't care what anyone says, a child is a child and has no capacity to understand the long term consequences of being put on display like that.

I think the comparison of Eileen O'Neill to P.T. Barnum is apt and spot on.

It's all about "a sucker born every minute". The suckers who put themselves up for sale and the suckers who buy it.

In the end, who really wins?? The one with the tent and the sign, that's who.

Same here, and those 6 babies being put in their darkened bedroom for the better part of 4 hours for "naps."

THAT'S the part that always made me go "Huh?" I had my youngest a year after she had her tups. I never remembered my kids taking more than a 2 hour nap, which is about average from my understanding. Also, my kids at that age would take a morning nap for about 45 minutes as well. I never had them on a "schedule", per se. Just as they got sleepy, they'd go down and I'd let them sleep as long as they wanted.

I also hated how she would sleep in until 8:00/8:30 a.m. and then go get her kids. And it was clear from the first special that the sextuplets were up when Jon got up at 7, at least some of them, because you could hear them in the background!

It just always irked me that a mother who claimed to have wanted children so badly that she went through IUI to have them, who was on bedrest for "36" weeks or whatever it was, would so blatantly ignore her kids. I've known other mom's like that. They parent when it's convenient for them. So my question is if you only want to parent when you feel like it (e.g. after I've had my coffee, after I've had my shower, after I've done my makeup, etc.), then why have kids?

librarylady said... 154

********************

I understand what you are saying. I think some of the problem is that many people come to look at them like they are in a zoo, instead of understanding that this is daily life here. It's not like going to tour a preserved historical site, say, where people are in costume, like Williamsburg or the Amana colonies, but many visitors treat it that way. It creates a lot of money for the area, so it's kind of a catch-22.

I took a look at part of the TLC show. Oh, my. What a crock. I can guarantee you that all of those young people knew what a microwave was well before they ever decided to jump the fence, lol. SO FAKE.

When I think about it, while the children were napping or being cared for by volunteers, she was pounding out her messages to companies offering to make her children available for merchandise (and $$$) because "Kelly" gave her the idea.

"Kelly" had better look at getting into the witness protection program because Kate is going to be dishing a lot of blame her way.

There aren't a lot of people in these parts (the so called haters) who are willing to take the chance of the likes of a certain "fan" outing them and harassing them/friends/family/etc. FB is a great place for that certain fan to find the "haters" and get personal info. She doesn't even care if she IDs the wrong person. She'll harass them anyway.

Second, the fact that Hoffman isn't getting many likes tells me that not many people in the larger world know of him, the book, or care about Kate Gosselin in general which is a good thing.

I don't think the book is going to go ballistic just because personally I don't think Kate is on a lot of people's radar anymore. I think that's her karma. I believe she's done in the minds of many people, done and was never even known to most.

I doubt that the sheeple even know who those people are.

Then there was Oral Roberts, who, according to the Televangelists Hall of Shame:

"Oral Roberts' claim to fame came from what he didn't do, as opposed to what he did. He showed the heathen what Christian salvation really meant when he locked himself in a tower and tearfully proclaimed that, if his ministry didn't get $8 million in donations by a specific date, God would "call him home." As you know, Oral got his money, and when you think about it, that was a damn shame. If God had called him home in dramatic fashion, Oral would have saved more souls in that one day than Billy Graham, Campus Crusade, and the entire Catholic church have saved in the last thirteen generations."

Dwidle...love your list...is that unreal or what? I think Kate can commit murder and confess and they would justify it some how. Thank goddness its only a few wackos that are saying these things...Ridiculous to even argue with them...I have pity for them....somethings wrong in the brain...

Dwindle,

I need more info!!!

I believe in and support our military dogs... but I never heard of them parachuting. Can you elaborate how it's done?

Are they strapped to a soldier? They must be, right, because how else would they know how to land to protect their legs?

I really do support them but my doglover brain is worrying about how they land safely.

And did you mean 'from a helicopter' that they would rappel out with solder down a rope, or did you mean they would really 'parachute'?

Confused and concerned due to lack of understanding.

I do remember that there was a bomb-sniffing dog that rappelled down from helicopter, strapped to a Marine for the raid to get Bin Laden. Is that what you are describing?

Anyone, two legged or four legged, in our military gets my respect and support. I'm an Aging Air Force Brat (AAFB). Silver and blue runs in my blood.

Aren't the Amish the ones setting up these tours? I am confused. They really should just open living museums. We have the "American Gypsies" here where I am and they draw quite the attention, but if you drive through their neighborhood, they draw shotguns on you. Gotta love the south :D

Let me tell ya...if they think what she did is great then they at some point in their life must have done something similiar. No one with a decent bone in their body would condone this. It tells me a lot about the element that are defending her....unsavory charactors....they understand her because they "identify" with her...

I am so sorry but I just dont know! All I know is that the dog "went down with Junior and everything turned out good". Junior is another soldier. I'm sorry! It will probably be close to a year before i see my son in law again, and when he and DD skype, she isnt likely to want to spend time asking about that. I will see if she knows more off the top of her pretty head.

Rapelling vs parachuting; My son in law (the "M' man for Matt) flies for the 101st Airborne so they do some of each.

Parent 9,

Yes, I've had good luck with GABA Calm. It is a combo of GABA, taurine and glycine. Comes in sublingual and capsule form.

I got mine from amazon.com on the recommendation from my SIL. Others I've read say it also can be used during the day to quiet your mind. My SIL uses it sometimes when her brain frazzles and it helps.

Apparently GABA, taurine and glycine all raise your brain's serotonin levels with leads to calming and a mild sedation effect. I'll find the article I read and post it here.

Caveat: I used it in addition to avoiding caffeine after 2 PM, doing all the sleep hygiene things you read online to promote easy entry into sleep.

Works for me like a charm. Slept well, only up once to tinkle, slept from 10 PM to 7:30 AM with no muggle-head feeling in the AM. Felt really rested ---- hope it continues to work so well!

Not a recommendation, just a report that I'm happy with it.

Also, I did try to learn from my pharmacist if it had any drug-drug interactions and her database didn't list GABA Calm. She could pull up taurine and glycine but not GABA.

Thanks, Sheri, I should add that to the list.

hehe!

Just a couple thoughts about Facebook. Don't people use their real names on FB? There aren't a lot of people in these parts (the so called haters) who are willing to take the chance of the likes of a certain "fan" outing them and harassing them/friends/family/etc. FB is a great place for that certain fan to find the "haters" and get personal info. She doesn't even care if she IDs the wrong person. She'll harass them anyway.

Yep, I agree, be careful or you could "out" your self, LOL, you guys know how those sheeple like to snoop and dig and think they are clever about figuring identities out and solving mysteries and what not ;)
Next thing you know she'll (and her legion of doom) will be harassing (and 'bullying' as they love to claim) your family, friends, the pages you liked- lord knows what else. Too much drama.

---------------------

We actually do have living history museums, as well as hands-on experiences that aren't intrusive, such as Amish farms and houses, villages, farmers markets, horse and buggy rides, that are run by members of the sect. They agree to it. It may be surprising to know that many Amish actually like the attention, taking to public places on Saturday afternoons when the tourist industry is in full swing. They'll pretend to be shy, but they do congregate at markets and various tourist attractions. Sometimes while driving the back roads on a Saturday evening, I'll think to myself...well, they're all going home, photo ops over for the day.

Granted, not all of them want attention and most of them just want to be left alone. I worked in the tourism industry here for many years and am quite familiar with their ways and came to know many families on a personal basis. They are a peaceful, gentle people. Some of them, however, are willing to have their photos taken and even sit down and talk to you about their lifestyle. Much of it depends on the particular sect because some are so much more strict than others.

Don't get me wrong. I love these people with a passion...I grew up with them. I went to school with Mennonites. Their beliefs should be respected, and their privacy observed. But many of them are not as anti-social as history and the media portrays them.

That said, I'm still fuming over what TLC did with "Breaking Amish."

This is the report I read that explained GABA Calm to me. It is a combo of neurotransmitters GABA, taurine and glycine.

Do a search using the term 'GABA Calm' and there are many articles to read.

Sorry I don't know how to make this link clickable.

Best thing is to educate yourself, of course, before deciding. < Is that a good disclaimer or whut?! LOL

But I'm happy with it. I have a kind of insomnia called delayed sleep pattern insomnia and this lets me get to bed at a reasonable hour to match DHs schedule a little better.... for me, it seems natural to stay up until 4 AM and sleep until noon. Puts me at odds with the rest of family, though...

Hope this helps get you pointed in the right direction :-)

From he previous thread:

"She lied about being in debt."

I don't doubt it, but I also think that she believes that anything she actually has to pay for herself is going into debt. She has stated that there was no such thing ass enough money.

"I do believe that the book will be coming soon and that we will all be shocked by some of the revelations. I can't help but think that the TLC staff were privy to some abuse those kids endured from Kate, but that they were silenced by her signed confidentiality agreements."

I do remember reading that the original film crew asked to be reassigned because what they witnessed was so upsetting (sorry, no
link). I WILL buy this book.

So I had a few extra minutes and watched the video of the 25 min. fundraising fashion show.
What struck me as really sad is that when Kate walked down the runway, there was a smattering of applause and very little hoots and hollers compared with everyone else that walked. In fact, there were less camera flashes as well.
It goes to show that Kate doesn't think to bring her friends to these events, that's if she had real friends - not the ones she's using to climb back up that ladder of popularity.
If she would have brought her friends they could have all chipped in, donated bucks to this great organization and Kate would have had a great time hanging out with them, supporting a good cause, etc.
Instead, she got a couple hours worth of 'Oh Look, Kate Gosselin on the Runway' web posts and that was it.
I kinda felt sorry for her.
And here's where I expose myself a little.
I do public speaking at fundraising event for **** groups. Usually they are dinner/dances with speakers and performers adding to the entertainment. Often times it's a silent auction to go along with it.
I ALWAYS bring an group of friends with me. We usually make it couples evening out, buy a big old table and have a great night supporting whatever causes are out there. I would have never though just to go to one of those events by myself. The whole point is to bring awareness to the issue/cause.
Instead Kate keeps everything to herself, like it's some super secret that she is doing a fundraiser. From what I could tell of the video, she was EXTREMELY out of her comfort zone, she wasn't all that well received by the attendees because they were there to support women striving to get back into the workplace, not a freeloading grifter like Kate Gosselin.

Okay, I've got to get to cooking dinner, no clue what I'm going to make yet. I may just call in a Pizza or something. We have to be out the door by 6pm. Busy Busy Busy

Thanks Permanent. I'm going to give it a try. This insomnia is driving me nuts and starting to really mess with my days. I'm not on any medication, so there isn't any drug interaction issue. I've got to sleep! I'm so wide awake at 3 a.m. that I could easily make a trip to the mall and shop without any exhaustion!

I wonder if the capsule form works as quickly as the dissolve-under-the-tongue method.

Is it that they like the tourism? Or is it that they are a peaceful people who accept the things they cannot change and just try to make the best of it. Something to ponder.

Dwindle,

No need to have the kids use up their skype time over this!

If the dog 'went down with Junior' from a helicopter then I assume they were rappeling out of a helicopter and the dog was strapped to the soldier.

I've actually seen that done on TV documentaries and at some air shows.

My mind is calm because those soldiers who rappel with their dogs love those dogs more than life! To the soldier and those in his unit, the dogs are treasures and are spoiled as much as a working dog can be.

Thanks for the quick reply...

Sending a cyberhug to M for his safety and service. And not to forget the other half left at home - cyberhug to your DD too!
