8. Show Me the Money!!!!! Part 1
Kate has been marketing the sextuplets even before they were
born. She invited dozens of media to their first birthday party. She requested
a 15-passenger van and that people give Target gift cards in lieu of sending
gifts.
Kate was extremely paranoid that
other families with multiples could steal her thunder. Betty Hayes, a New Jersey mother of
sextuplets and two sets of twins, called Kate asking about their first special
and about being paid and receiving freebies. Kate writes that she is “mad” that
the Hayes are getting another special, and “I am merely trying to provide
for my family and rely on the Lord to do so! He is in control and I HATE this
competition pressure I am forced to deal with!
After the first Discovery special aired and did well, talks
commenced for a second special and a 20-episode contract. Discovery agreed to
pay the family $2,000 an episode, with many things comped including Disney
World and the grocery shopping trip to Giant. Kate was involved in a lot of
back and forth e-mails with producer Jen Stocks about episode ideas and money.
As time went on, Kate grew more demanding about what things Discovery would
comp. She also continued to take checks and cash from fans, friends and
relatives, sometimes checks for several hundred dollars or more.
In October 2006, Kate’s grandmother died. Kate wrote this
about the funeral: “Her service was
nice except that our mother tried to preach to us children through her tribute
to grandma… none of us appreciated that!!!”
In March 2007, Kate called Discovery’s treatment of them
“wining and dining” and refers to it as
a “magical time.” For
season two, Jon and Kate wanted $6,000 an episode. Discovery negotiated them
down to $5,000.
Kate
obsessively tried to line up other money making opportunities, for example
commercials. She accused Discovery of “sucking the life” out of deals after
there was concern a commercial she wanted to do for Fridgidaire might compete
with some of their other advertisers. Kate had visions of filming even when she
was “old and gray.” In one email she writes: “I also
want to secure a 'foreverness' for our family (house, college etc) that goes
beyond our show so that when I look back when I am old and gray (and probably
STILL filming- ha ha) I know without a doubt that we did the right thing.”
9. Show Me the Money!!!!! Part 2
The Gosselins made less money per episode than some sources
have reported. Season one they made $2,000 an episode. Season two and three
they made $5,000 an episode. Season four was $9,000 per episode, which was
later re-negotiated to $22,500. Season five stayed at $22,500 per episode.
Kate hired a new manager, Julie Carson May, in April 2008.
May was heavily involved in contract negotiations. She fought to try to limit
the family’s commitment to the show to an average of three days a week, that
each season include at least 35 episodes, and that the family would be
compensated for episodes even if they used old footage from previous seasons
(i.e. flashback episodes), for first class travel and “overages” of $600 a day
per family member and $75 per diem per day per family member. She proposed a
ghost writer to write TLC’s Jon and Kate blog because Kate didn’t have time. Tax
obligations were flagged as something to be discussed. She wanted the
family to have input and approval over merchandising.
The list of freebies Kate was able to get Discovery and others to pay for or at least offer to her is astounding. Landscaping, fences, Gymboree, ski clothes for Cara, a condo near Cancun, a beach house in North Carolina, an offer for filming a breast augmentation in San Diego and subsequent recovery at a resort called The Hideaway [Admin note: My source says Kate ultimately chose Dr. Glassman to do her breasts, without filming. In the book she indeed says she has a choice between Glassman (but no filming) orSan Diego
(filming), though doesn’t say which one she ended up choosing. One wonders if
some kind of executive decision was made to keep the boob job secret for image
reasons, even though they had an offer to film it.], at least $500 a week at Ann Taylor, make-up, Olay daily facials, Crest whitestrips, camping equipment,
furniture, Charmin toilet paper, invisible fence for the dogs, and a trip to
Niagara Falls. Kate responded to an
offer from a doctor to give just Jon
Lasik surgery that she wanted it for both
of them. Kate frequently follows up with those who gave her free
things, straight out asking for more and claiming how much she talks about how
great their products are.

In the book she indeed says she has a choice between Glassman (but no filming) or
Kate once shamelessly skipped out on a scheduled weekly
conference call with Discovery to go to the spa. There were also discussions
about a deal for Cara and Mady to “write” a series of children’s books. Perhaps
most disturbing of all, there was discussion about designing an iPhone game
around the children. Part of the game description includes: “The game starts with the player taking on the roll of Kate on Monday
morning. The player must get through 7
day/night cycles to win the games first level.
Each level will not only be separated by days, but each day will also be
separated in sections breakfast time, lunch and dinner time, with bedtime being
the goal the player trying to reach each day. The first week is an example of
basic daily life, from getting the oldest kids ready for school to getting the
rest of the kids ready for their meals, in this case breakfast. Each of the
kids run of different timers, where they will get antsy, crying or even have a
full tantrum depending on how long they are left alone or not given what they
need.”
Kate and Beth received a $100,000 advance for their book
Multiple Blessings. A deal with Kmart for their holiday campaign that only
required three-days of work paid $158,000 plus up to $5,000 for a security team
of Kate’s choosing. There was also a $25,000 Proctor and Gamble deal.
10. A Family Under (Discovery's) Control
Discovery maintained a frightening amount of control over the family contractually, including where they would travel, what they wore and even how they styled their hair. Discovery also had several provisions limiting their liability and obligations to the family. They specifically prohibited the Gosselins from subjecting their contracts to union rules such as SAG. [Admin note: Huge red flag they were taking advantage of the family and actively trying to circumvent any built in protections in the entertainment industry’s unions.] The contract also included a provision that the Gosselins would “guarantee” the children’s “performance” and “obligations.” Discovery released themselves of all responsibility in the event of an accident or even death. They also had a provision excluding them from any worker’s compensation claims. Any personal photos and video the family took in the course of the show was the property of Discovery. Discovery could terminate the contract at any time for any reason without owing the Gosselins a cent. It was the Gosselin’s obligation to secure any necessary work permits and travel documents. They also wrote in the right to sue should any member of the family breach any of their obligations. In other words, Discovery could bail on the family at any time without consequence, but there would be hell to pay if any member of the family ever tried the same thing (and as we all saw, there was).

I see Kate is retweeting platitudes again, same as she did when the first stories about the book came out. She's trying to show how strong she is--but she is probably in double panic mode that more and more will come out about her.

Tucker's Mom:
Hoping you get good results on Mr Bichon. Sounds like he's doing ok. And being spoiled- well, who wouldn't? ( oh, never mind, we know who...) Hard waiting.
I really wish Kate would be investigated for the treatment of Shoka, That dog has lived more lives than a cat!
Tucker's Mom -- all of us with pets (old and young) are waiting with you.
I have not seen Kate's tweets at the top of the page for 2 days. Didn't think I was missing much!
I set up to record WWHL last night and tonight. I will watch the show from yesterday to see what it is like. I may continue to record for a few days so that my new viewing habit won't be linked to a Kate spike in viewers.
Has there been any confirmation that Shoka is OK? Milo isn't beating that drum anymore?
Someone commented that Kate always comes.out of tv appearances smelling like a rose. Someone should have let that WWHL show know that this was their golden opportunity to break new ground, actually give her a hard time. Viewers would love it! I hope that is what haappens.
Thanks Maggie, but Vidéotron (Bravo station) here in Gatineau does not have the same listings as the US. I'll flip channels at 11 tonight hoping to get it on another station and if not, I'll just read here tomorrow to see what everyone says.
Winsomeone I know that Kate has never squirmed on other shows, but now that her abusiveness has been revealed, I can't imagine that she'll feel comfortable spinning her same old lies. She'll surely be sitting on edge, ready to dodge anything that may mention the book.
Sorry...not convinced that Milo is real...She talks like she knows about situations within the home....I personnaly think we're all being "played"...sounds to me like its someone who knows Kate very well....Now Why would she be at the same exact spot Kate was on her vacation? When she said "look fimiliar?" They were probably Kate photos and either Kate posted them or this Deanna did....I really think it's Kate or Deanna...Also how does Milo know that Kate pays for and takes total care of the dog? Another red flag...read her tweets carefully and ask yourself...does this make sense? I also loved when she said that Kate doesn't have deep pockets anymore...how could she possibly know that? I thought she was in a wheelchair...no shes jetting off on business trips and vacations???? non of it makes sense..and if it doesn't make sense its not true....trust me...she doesn't exist
KAT: I don't think Kate has the imagination for creating Milo but it well could be a false persona, for sure...hmm.

What a frickin' insult to working moms all over. Someone please tell me what Kate's job is?
Wo is me! I have to travel first class, sit on a set in NYC, drone on and on about mememe and then I have to do a run.
Try waking up at 5 and coming home at 6pm do make dinner, do homework, clean the house, etc. etc.
She has no clue.
I can not imagine any real working mom would like her one bit.
For those of you who can't watch the show tonight, Bravo posts clips from the show on their website. Unfortunately, Bravo doesn't air full episodes of the show. However, I don't know if these clips are able to be watched in Canada. Here is the link to the WWHL page:

Trish, you are SO right. What was PJ thinking? How dare anyone think that they know how to manage investments better than KK!! This blog is so lucky to have posters like you, keeping us all informed! You know that common sense isn't so common, right?
Also an insult to SAHMs- they don't have chefs, cleaners, lawn boys, millions of $s etc. It's hard work when the kids are small, as Kate would have us believe she is doing. Even now, that the children are gone a good 5 of the time.

Hi Tucker's Mom (190) sending prayers for Mr. Bichon. Our 15 year old Australian Shepherd suffered from Vestibular Disease (Vertigo) in his last year which would come and go. He would suddenly start leaning to one side with his head tilted, have loss of balance, disorientation and irregular jerking eye movements called nystagmus. This would last for a few days and he would just as suddenly be back to his old wonderful self. He made it for another full year before we finally let him go to the Rainbow Bridge. He waits for me there. Enjoy your time with him.

Auntie Ann, that was a good laugh, Con Artist, lolll. So, so true.
I am late to the IUI/HCG party but here it goes. She may have had 3-4 mature follicles but also had several that were just short of mature. In my experience, the doctor would have shown her the mature and the almost mature on the ultrasound prior to her trigger shot.
If she knew there were several that were almost ready, she could have given herself a second HCG shot the next day to release any follicles that had matured by that point.
Does that make sense?
Tucker's Mom--sending good thoughts for both you and Mr. Bichon. May the news be good.

See I don't see this as a red flag at all. It's just typical blind fan worship. Of course Milo doesn't really know what is going on, she's just defending Kate any way she knows how. Even in the face of cold hard facts, for instance that Kate in fact does NOT support these kids all by herself, unless she's paying JON child support now LOL. She even spouts nonsense about how Kate has always paid for the dogs, when we can all see for ourselves the dogs were given to them when they were married, thus there is no "Kate paid for this" when it was the marriage money. It's just fan nonsense they all do even when faced with the facts. I still think it's just an obsessed fan, it's too much work for too long to be anyone else.
Could y'all help me with my post#185 on the previous page. It is driving me nuts why this doesn't make sense to me. Thanks everyone!
Another point about Milo--she just doesn't want to believe that Kate could do anything wrong. She may have her doubts though, but would never say so. Hence her asking for pictures of Shoka, or asking Deanna to confirm that Shoka's alright.
I think by her tweets to and about Kate, she is not only trying to convince others what a great person Kate is, but is also trying to convince herself.
If Kate doesn't tweet for awhile, Milo is right there asking where she is--but then if Kate doesn't answer, she starts tweeting how busy Kate is. She's always making excuses for Kate--because she can't accept that what she believes may not be true.
Tucker's mom...
hope your doggie will be okay! Sending good thoughts your way..
As for Kate's adult fans, who cares? I don't like Kate taking advantage of her minor age fans. It's cruel and teaches these younger kids that some people are frauds and take advantage of people's generosity. As for her adult fans, damn, they ought to know better.
I don't think Andy will put the skewers to Kate tonight. He likes drama as much as the next person, but he probably has been 'media trained' regarding legalities. He isn't going to put himself at risk.
I hardly think his ratings for tonight are going to be that great. Who cares about Kate? There are a few people here that care about her kids well being, but the vast majority of folks think she fell off the planet a yr or so ago.
I just hope he isn't going to offer this undeserving shrew a show on Bravo. (Like that channel isn't chock full of undeserving people already! yuk)
I have Bravo on right now, and apparently they now have a show for a few chefs that were showcased on TopChef...(first time to see it...they are all blathering on about 'their brand')..they wouldn't have a 'brand' if it hadn't been for the show.
It's really unbelievable that she would think that a blog post every week or so that shouldn't take her more than 15 minutes to tap out, if that, and a few trips to NYC a month to get pampered and maybe show her ugly mug on some talk show once in awhile, makes her a "working mom." What a life. What a joke. She has no clue the struggles of working mothers.
aggiemom - I think "Life After Top Chef" has been on for 2 weeks now. I didn't make it all the way through the first episode, I think I saw all of last night's episode. MEH. I think a one-time special about what they are doing now would have been good - I don't need to "follow them around". I find Jen's behavior/attitude ODD, I really liked her the season she was on with the Voltaggio brothers, not so much on all-stars.
Not sure how long the "season" is slated to be, not sure if I care at all!
Bluebird - ha! Kate really does fit the profile of a scammer/con artist. The only thing she's ever worked hard at is fooling people into doing things for her so she could lay back and enjoy the good life.

Admin I don't know what to think about Milo. After reading all those tweets from noboogers4u I am almost convinced they know what they're talking about, but the account is gone today. I got a "that page doesn't exist message" when I looked for it. Weird or what?
Is there any proof that Milo is an intern account. If there is no lights out man than why did Milo say so herself.
_____________________
Because it could have been a game to add more credibility, more personal touches to a story. She implies that she knows all of Kate's thoughts, what goes on in the house, how busy Kate is. Milo was in a wheelchair but then suddenly is able to run a race, she has two children, but then forgets about the one and now only has one child, she has a yellow dog, but a black one is shown in the photo...and much more.
I don't know what to believe about Milo. Yesterday there was talk here that Milo was a group of interns, a fake account set up to praise Kate, and then last night someone jumps on Twitter to say just that. Coincidence? Perhaps. It's just that the idea that Milo is not one person does make sense in view of some of the stuff she comes up with and the inconsistencies of it all.
But she could just be a crazy celebrity-stalker, which is really more sad than being a non-person and just a staff of interns.

-------------
One of the last tweets from noboog said that she has just outed herself but she didn't care. If that page no longer exists, it could be because the person pulled it because of the risk of others finding out who it was. I don't think that TLC set Milo up to be Kate's special uber fan, but rather someone in Kate's camp, a pr person, friend (Jamie?) or one of the crew that they paid. The DUI accusation was strange. Didn't Chris the pap have a DUI conviction? The references to other people, something about Jen Stocks, a Bed and Breakfast, Erin, all sounded very real. She also said that MiloandJack was an acronym. Anyone good with codes?
One of these days we'll find out. Someone will slip up somewhere.
I believe Milo is actually a 'hater'. I believe she intentionally pushes Kate with her incessant questions and ridiculous, over-the-top praise mixed with slams and snark.
Here's the latest example with Milo mixing support with quite a slam:

Hey Trish, you are so right. I should have said we are RICH, and people get RICH by working hard over time (granted, in a booming industry) and not having a team of kids they can't afford, living modestly and without debt, shopping frugally (most wardrobe is from Costco or Ann Taylor or Loft, Kate's favorite stores, clearance racks for $5-10 and no 'organic' food in this house), being respectful of each other so marriage remains strong and intact, being generous (because it is the right thing to do AND it does come back to you somehow), and oh-so-many other things. Read the Millionaire Next Door, you might learn something and may even look at your neighbors a little differently.
There is almost no way Kate is making her monthly or annual nut in dividends only, there is barely anything to invest in. Real estate or foreign currency is a buyer's market, but it's all flat and you have to wait for recovery to recoup those costs. Stocks and bonds are the only things that are growing - even 1-year CDs are 1%.
There, is that no-so-humble-bragging enough for you?

I didn't see Money Game's post as being an asshole post at all (as PJ wrote), nor did I see MG as being pissed off. It was a simple question as to how PJ's momma's wealth was relevant when discussing how much Kate had invested. Nobody knows where Kate's money is invested, nor how much (it could be one million that's left, or six million), nor what her returns are. She may be doing fairly well, or she may have taken a big hit when the economy went south.
I have to diaagree respectfully with Pj. Although I don't mind her sharing about her situation no more do I mind it from anyone else. I have a very small amount of money in a Roth IRA that has been making several hundreds a month. It's in a vanguard mutual fund anyone can pick. If Kate picked the same fund but put a lot more in it, like millions, she could make real bank. The point being, it depends what you're in. She could be invested in all kinds of things, angel investing even, things we don't know about. Contrary to the doom and gloom the media tells us, in my opinion the answer is it depends what you're invested in, a little luck too. There are a lot of millionaires out there doing well. What I do know from my source is that Kate indeed has had very good luck with her investments. Wonder if Steve helped her.

This is true. Someone figured out that with her lifestyle, she needs at least $350,000 a year just to pay the bills. Someone posted that with her returns she has enough to live comfortably off the dividends for her lifetime. No way is this possible. If she is not employed, she's not going to be able to sustain that lifestyle without going into the principal. She's not even going to make it relying on dividends until the kids are 18. It's not going to happen, not in this economy and the volatile markets.
Admin -- yes, she could rely on investments if she did away with her current lifestyle, if she downsized, got rid of the maintenance expenses, school tuition, taxes, pool, etc. Just the basic bills that need to be paid would be staggering. If she would give all of this up, and come down to earth, get a job, she should have no trouble living off her employment pay and her investments. But to keep that property, pay for those kids in private school, and her spending, spending, spending on herself, she's going to find that well running dry.
The status quo is not going to work for her.
Bravo clips cannot be viewed in Canada - would be lovely if ya'll can recap for those that missed (that is if you subjected yourself to it!)
I also disagree with PJ to a degree, it is possible of her to live off her earnings, though we do no know what she is invested in and what her bond/stock ratios are. we are very safely invested in Canadian stocks/bonds (mostly bonds due to market volatility) and are returning 5-8% . That would be 50-80 000 per million invested.

It's a good thing Kate never brought Honey the Koala back to live at the Kompound. Who knows what her fate might have been?
OK, let's say Kate is living off her dividends and interest. With that amount invested, that is probably right.
But dividends often pay out once a quarter, and some pay out once a year. So, at the times between the pay outs, Kate could be very cash poor, even with millions in Wall Street.
It's like living paycheck to paycheck. You get paid, pay bills, and then you have little left.
So, she becomes Miss Frugal and Queen Grifty until her investments give her another payout.
