Discussion Thread: 'Kate Gosselin: How She Fooled the World,' Chapters 8-10

'I know without a doubt that we did the right thing.'

We will do a “book club” style discussion of a few chapters at a time as we read the book together. You are free to read with the group or skip ahead. You are also free to discuss whatever you like, however if you want to partake in the book club discussion, this thread is here to discuss the designated chapters. Robert Hoffman’s book “Kate Gosselin: How She Fooled the World” was available on Amazon for Kindle, but has been suspended with an unknown date when it will be available again. The Kindle app is free for multiple platforms, including PCs.

8. Show Me the Money!!!!! Part 1

Kate has been marketing the sextuplets even before they were born. She invited dozens of media to their first birthday party. She requested a 15-passenger van and that people give Target gift cards in lieu of sending gifts.

Kate was extremely paranoid that other families with multiples could steal her thunder. Betty Hayes, a New Jersey mother of sextuplets and two sets of twins, called Kate asking about their first special and about being paid and receiving freebies. Kate writes that she is “mad” that the Hayes are getting another special, and “I am merely trying to provide for my family and rely on the Lord to do so! He is in control and I HATE this competition pressure I am forced to deal with!

After the first Discovery special aired and did well, talks commenced for a second special and a 20-episode contract. Discovery agreed to pay the family $2,000 an episode, with many things comped including Disney World and the grocery shopping trip to Giant. Kate was involved in a lot of back and forth e-mails with producer Jen Stocks about episode ideas and money. As time went on, Kate grew more demanding about what things Discovery would comp. She also continued to take checks and cash from fans, friends and relatives, sometimes checks for several hundred dollars or more.

In October 2006, Kate’s grandmother died. Kate wrote this about the funeral: “Her service was nice except that our mother tried to preach to us children through her tribute to grandma… none of us appreciated that!!!”

In March 2007, Kate called Discovery’s treatment of them “wining and dining”  and refers to it as a “magical time.” For season two, Jon and Kate wanted $6,000 an episode. Discovery negotiated them down to $5,000.

Kate obsessively tried to line up other money making opportunities, for example commercials. She accused Discovery of “sucking the life” out of deals after there was concern a commercial she wanted to do for Fridgidaire might compete with some of their other advertisers. Kate had visions of filming even when she was “old and gray.” In one email she writes: “I also want to secure a 'foreverness' for our family (house, college etc) that goes beyond our show so that when I look back when I am old and gray (and probably STILL filming- ha ha) I know without a doubt that we did the right thing.”

9. Show Me the Money!!!!! Part 2

The Gosselins made less money per episode than some sources have reported. Season one they made $2,000 an episode. Season two and three they made $5,000 an episode. Season four was $9,000 per episode, which was later re-negotiated to $22,500. Season five stayed at $22,500 per episode.

Kate hired a new manager, Julie Carson May, in April 2008. May was heavily involved in contract negotiations. She fought to try to limit the family’s commitment to the show to an average of three days a week, that each season include at least 35 episodes, and that the family would be compensated for episodes even if they used old footage from previous seasons (i.e. flashback episodes), for first class travel and “overages” of $600 a day per family member and $75 per diem per day per family member. She proposed a ghost writer to write TLC’s Jon and Kate blog because Kate didn’t have time. Tax obligations were flagged as something to be discussed. She wanted the family to have input and approval over merchandising.

The list of freebies Kate was able to get Discovery and others to pay for or at least offer to her is astounding. Landscaping, fences, Gymboree, ski clothes for Cara, a condo near Cancun, a beach house in North Carolina, an offer for filming a breast augmentation in San Diego and subsequent recovery at a resort called The Hideaway  [Admin note: My source says Kate ultimately chose Dr. Glassman to do her breasts, without filming. In the book she indeed says she has a choice between Glassman (but no filming) or San Diego (filming), though doesn’t say which one she ended up choosing. One wonders if some kind of executive decision was made to keep the boob job secret for image reasons, even though they had an offer to film it.], at least $500 a week at Ann Taylor, make-up, Olay daily facials, Crest whitestrips, camping equipment, furniture, Charmin toilet paper, invisible fence for the dogs, and a trip to Niagara Falls. Kate responded to an offer from a doctor to give just Jon Lasik surgery that she wanted it for both of them. Kate frequently follows up with those who gave her free things, straight out asking for more and claiming how much she talks about how great their products are.

Kate once shamelessly skipped out on a scheduled weekly conference call with Discovery to go to the spa. There were also discussions about a deal for Cara and Mady to “write” a series of children’s books. Perhaps most disturbing of all, there was discussion about designing an iPhone game around the children. Part of the game description includes: “The game starts with the player taking on the roll of Kate on Monday morning.   The player must get through 7 day/night cycles to win the games first level.   Each level will not only be separated by days, but each day will also be separated in sections breakfast time, lunch and dinner time, with bedtime being the goal the player trying to reach each day. The first week is an example of basic daily life, from getting the oldest kids ready for school to getting the rest of the kids ready for their meals, in this case breakfast. Each of the kids run of different timers, where they will get antsy, crying or even have a full tantrum depending on how long they are left alone or not given what they need.”

Kate and Beth received a $100,000 advance for their book Multiple Blessings. A deal with Kmart for their holiday campaign that only required three-days of work paid $158,000 plus up to $5,000 for a security team of Kate’s choosing. There was also a $25,000 Proctor and Gamble deal.

10. A Family Under (Discovery's) Control

Discovery maintained a frightening amount of control over the family contractually, including where they would travel, what they wore and even how they styled their hair. Discovery also had several provisions limiting their liability and obligations to the family. They specifically prohibited the Gosselins from subjecting their contracts to union rules such as SAG. [Admin note: Huge red flag they were taking advantage of the family and actively trying to circumvent any built in protections in the entertainment industry’s unions.] The contract also included a provision that the Gosselins would “guarantee” the children’s “performance” and “obligations.” Discovery released themselves of all responsibility in the event of an accident or even death. They also had a provision excluding them from any worker’s compensation claims. Any personal photos and video the family took in the course of the show was the property of Discovery. Discovery could terminate the contract at any time for any reason without owing the Gosselins a cent.  It was the Gosselin’s obligation to secure any necessary work permits and travel documents. They also wrote in the right to sue should any member of the family breach any of their obligations. In other words, Discovery could bail on the family at any time without consequence, but there would be hell to pay if any member of the family ever tried the same thing (and as we all saw, there was).

Recipe for a bad back. Bend over child for
minor infraction, open mouth fully and scream until every muscle between your forehead and your calves are pulled tight. Keep tension until you are finished screaming at that child.
Spin around quickly to catch a child taking a piece of candy. Pick him up by the hair and
fling him somewhere.

In a few short minutes you will have a perfectly sore back. The only cure is a trip to a spa in a desert resort.

Why is she now baking bday treats for school? And what middle schooler brings birthday treats? Maybe it's different because it's a small school but that was finished in 5th grade here.

I think that it would be fascinating to do a qualitative and quantitative sociological study of the sheeple. They seem to exist in their own little cultural system. It would be interesting, in a field study (pun intended), to explore their relationship in a micro, macro and meso level, determining the demographics -- their education, marital status, family, socio-economic level.

The only problem would be in distancing myself, keeping an unbiased attitude in the research. They are such a strange, yet predictable, group of obsessive fans.

Why is KK baking personal pizzas for the girls to take to school? Is she planning of feeding the entire 6th grade? The girls don't have all the same classes (she tweeted earlier that one was taking French and the other Spanish, so I assume that there are other differences in their class scheds), so how will it be decided which classmates get to participate?

I have a question for any of you that live in PA. Are there any articles in your local papers about the book? When I mention the book and say Kate Gosselin I get who, that lady that had 8 kids, she's still around, etc., without much interest. I make sure they know what she did though.

I'm hopeful that at least one person has come forward to speak about Kate's abuse of the kids and we just don't know about it. Think the most read paper would accept an ad stating confidentiality agreements are null and void when it comes to child abuse and those that are aware of Kate's abuse plesae speak up? Probably wishful thinking!

About Kate not taking the kids health issues seriously, think it's unexcusable. I'd tell TLC/Discovery to shove their contracts, if that is what was stopping Kate. She was more concerned with a scar than a concussion.

Perhaps AMI gave Robert a lie detector test in conjunction with a contract with him. Notice that Robert says the proceeds from the "project" will be donated. What is "the project?" Is it only the book? If so, couldn't that mean that he is pocketing any $ he makes selling stories to ROL, Star, etc.?

In my opinion, even if he is selling the stories, which I don't believe for one minute, since he has the proof and exposed the truth, all that he has been through he deserves any money he gets.

Remona, no problem. AMI is a huge entertainment conglomerate. It owns Radar and Star Mag. and others that were listed on a different article here which I can't find. Was just trying to figure out why the heck they'd give a lie detector test. If Radar on Line requested the lie detector test (since they broke story about book) and Robert passed I'm just curious why Radar is giving Robert such a hard time and implying insinuating things in a negative light towards Robert.

I wasn't at all offended by your post, Marie, but telling people dear to your heart that you do love them is not only "not completely wrong" and "probably" right, it's downright O.K. in my book... IF it really means something, if it echoes a genuine loving behavior.

If not, well, you're right... "Words are cheap". And too often "I love you" is used to compensate a lack of real investement in the relationship.

And that is probably what really bugs you when Kate writes about her loving lunchbox notes to her kids. They are not a reflection of her actions as a mother.

But sometimes, "I love you" really means "I love you". And the're always the sweetest words to hear, to read, to see in someone's eyes, in someone's smile.

Nope, not Al and not Polly. I don't know why you wouldn't "believe for one minute" that he's selling stories. Hello? He worked the Gosselin beat for a tabloid. Why wouldn't he sell to them now?

Why would AMI go to the trouble of having him take a lie detector test regarding the journals if they weren't paying good $ for the story? Do you think they bring someone in for a lie detector test every time they run a story? If you choose to believe that Robert gave a major tabloid an advance copy of the book for free, go right ahead. I'm not that naive.

He's entitled to profit from his work. I just don't happen to think his motive was as altruistic as he claims.

I don't understand Kate's followers. Maybe they manhandle their children and the fact that Kate abuses her kids justifies their actions! How else can someone love a child abuser?

She not only abused( abuses ) her kids but they were BABIES, BABIES! It's like someone who tortures puppies! What kind of human being does that????

Here is your answer. He never hurried to put a button up for donations. He was responding and acting on what many here asked him to do. We so believe in what he is doing and since he is donating ALL PROCEEDS to a charity, we wanted a place to show our support and give above and beyond the price of the book.

I answered your question so you answer mine. Why are you so bent out of shape that he wrote a book. It's not about you. If I remember right, you stated your not a Kate fan, nor hater and you don't even agree with what she does. So why then do you seem to be taking this book so personal? It doesn't make any sense. The "minors cannot contract" rule I think is sometimes a little misstated here. It's a bit more complicated than that.

Minor's CAN contract. The only thing is they have a right to get out of some contracts at any time for any reason. Some contracts are perfectly valid though--like contracting to serve in the military, housing (a minor gets an apartment), taxes, etc. In NY and CA minors in the entertainment industry can contract and usually can't get out of it. Otherwise there would be no way to contract child actors, which is done all the time. In all cases a minor is welcome to sign wherever they want, it's just a question of whether they will be able to back out of it if they should want to.

This simply isn't true. Teachers account for only about 16% of reports of chid abuse. Just 16%. Since they are mandatory reporters, it's fair to say that in the other 84% of the cases they likely hadn't a clue.

Don't get me wrong I wish kids would always just run to their teacher when something is wrong, but they don't.

I was a public school teacher so yes, you have to report possible child abuse, if you don't you can lose your teaching credential, but I don't know about private schools.
I only had two cases of child abuse during my entire career, one child I didn't even report it , the office informed me that he had been taken from his mom and he would not be returning to my class. The second child always wore long sleeves,but my aide saw cigarette burns on his arm, child was pulled out of my class and I never saw him again!
First of all, I never said the kids will tell you they are being abused. I would think that they would be afraid of their parents. My students would say things like, oh my parents fight and my mom hit my dad, or we don't have any food in the house,
and so forth.

I think Kate's kids potentionally could tell family they trust, but what family, right?

A Question That Should Be Answered said... 33

Unless you are Al or Polly. If your not either one, my deepest apologies. If you are, why do you care about what we think about Robert and his book?
**************
First, I don't respond to demands from you. Second, I can't answer your question because it makes no sense. Pointing out that the guy may be making some big bucks off the book is not taking anything "personal" (sic). And that Paypal button was up as soon as he realized you all wanted to send him $ after he just happened to mention his "serious financial problems."

Call me cynical, but I happen to think the guy is choosing his words carefully and being very manipulative. It's simply my opinion, one to which I am entitled regardless of what you may think. Why are you taking my opinion so personally? Why do you care what I think about what you think? I can flip your questions right back at you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just an fyi, I don't care whether he had financial problems or not. I'd still donate. Matter of fact since you're so upset that he's getting donations I'm going to give him my 3rd one as soon as I finish with this post, so eat your heart out, oh jealous one.
I'm trying to remember, who did we read about that said Robert was manipulative? Hmmmmm I believe the initials are AW. Another clue, the poster writes like a guy,oops I'm sorry an angry guy.
Ignore him. He's just trying to manipulate us. LOL get it, manipulate, projecting etc. ;)
Aimee please don't get ridiculous . You just used the term " broad statements" so that is common practice to use " broad statements".
Teachers , social workers , and candlestick makers all express themselves at times using broad statements, actually that probably makes conversations more interesting and fun!
So let's move on , I'm retired from teaching , so I don't feel like teaching anyone about communication skills!
I rather stay focus on Kate Gosselin, the child abuser!
Ridiculous? I was simply pointing out that IF your broad generalization was true, then Mady and/or Cara would have told their respective teacher about being abused. Maybe, just maybe, if they had, something would have been done about it.
I don't need any education on communication skills nor did I ask for any. ??
The kids are still to young and under kate's control. None of the kids are going to say anything.They are all still under Kate's spell. If you don't tell people you love to film we'll lose the house...if you don't tell people your happy we'll never vacation again...if you don't tell people you are so very happy we wont have any money. ect ect
Give it a few more years and the kids will reveal everything.It's sad they will have to wait even more to get help.
Calling CPS and having them do a visit to a home doesn't necessarily mean they will do anything. Especially when the home is clean and the kids look well taken care of.
I work as an aide in a school. There was a lovely little girl in our class that we suspected was abused. She had marks on her arms that appeared to be cigarette burns. There were other signs of abuse too. Lack of sleep and not bathed. She had an older brother that we suspected was abusing her. The little girl knew that CPS and the school social worker were going to visit her home and seemed relieved that they were. Unfortunately nothing ever came of that visit. Whatever the mom said they CPS bought her story. A couple of months later the family moved out of the district. I think of that little girl often and pray she is safe.
Aimee I'm not mean, I'm nice! I used the word please! I just said that I'm retired and don't care to correct anyone ! I have spent my entire adult life working hard to help kids and many times I would spend my own money to buy books, computers, puzzles and other educational materials for my students! Now I'm just going to enjoy my retirement and my time to try to help the Gosselin children! No child should have to endure what those kids have gone through ! Hopefully even just the pressure that's put on Kate might help to make life a little easier on those poor kids!
Aimee too : I think the original "kids tell you everything" comment was about who made the treats that are going to school (but I can't find it on this page in the thread, despite going up & down the entire page 2 times).
I totally agree that kids are not going to tell you about abuse. Kids think the abuse is their fault, they feel guilty about the abuse, and protective about their abuser.
But the generalized "kids tell you everything" is pretty true in a school classroom. The adults in the room learn who sleeps with who, which family member has a birthmark shaped like Texas on their arse, that grandma likes white wine from dinner time until bedtime. Just innocent observational comments from the kids, they are not tattling, they are just discussing.
I have a question for any of you that live in PA. Are there any articles in your local papers about the book? When I mention the book and say Kate Gosselin I get who, that lady that had 8 kids, she's still around, etc., without much interest. I make sure they know what she did though.
8888888888888888
I wanted to address this question. I have not seen anything in our local paper about Robert or his book. We only have one local paper, so I don't imagine it's been picked up around here. Believe it or not, some people I have mentioned Kate's name too also give me that blank stare...so even locally not everyone is familiar with her.
The last mention of her in the paper that I saw was that article about a year ago where it mainly mentioned Kate's township and how they miss the money from TLC.
Berks Resident said...
I don't have time to catch up on the comments but I have a question? If Kate beat the kids to the point of abuse. Why didn't anyone come forward?
88888888888888888
I'm very sorry but these statements make no sense. "If Kate beat the kids to the point of abuse" ?????????????????????? Beating the kids IS abuse. So is forcing them to work 40 hours to film one episode with take after take after take. Letting them play a few minutes then making them go back to the house because they have to do another scene.
Picking a toddler up by his hair and spanking him very hard is abuse.
I doubt that that children view it as abuse because that was how they were raised and they don't know any better. Notice how everyone close to the family hsa been dismissed? Why do you think this is?
I remember being a very young person and a physician asked me about my father being an alcoholic. At the time, I perceived an alcoholic to be someone lying in the gutter holding a bottle inside a paper bag. "why NO" I answered, although after being educated, I now understand that my father truly was one.
I believe it is the same with child abuse. Don't think children recognize physical/emotional abuse until they are better educated/older, and then the lightbulb may go off. Just my two cents.
from the sheeple and fan tweeties "KATE IS NOT A CHILD ABUSER!"
I really dont understand how they think that way. You know for fact that if their hubbies (or wives) snatched up their precious 2 year by their hair, and beat them with wooden (or plastic) spoon and then THREW that poor baby as hard as they could into their crib, they would be screaming ABUSE. And probably demanding full custody. You know they would. It is so irritating to hear them say there is no abuse, or that khate is not an abuser.
Un-F'n- believable.
Weren't teahers (way back in the day) allowed to smack kids hands with rulers? AND THEN IT WAS BANNED? Wonder why that is? Sheeple, anything? Thought so.
They had multiple complaints from family members and professionals...and still...nothing. He had to deal with social services all the time and he said they were good for nothing and that no one did their job...so don't you dare say that no one reported anything....CPS is very frustrating to work with....they are over loaded with cases and it takes forever for them to follow up...and most times they don't until a child really gets hurt....tell me...how hard do you have to "beat a kid to the point of abuse?" What an idiotic statement....your stupidity astounds me...
Nice to see you KAT! Your comments were spot on!
I am in total agreeance that the one persistent drive byer is getting old. Always looking for an answer to "a question" but no frickin explanation, answer, total agreement, statement or amount of reasoning is ever good enough. The outcome of our attempts is always that Admin is a bitch, we are rude and "the question" is never answered to anons. satisfation. Since you never get what you are looking for WHY DO YOU KEEP COMING BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kate illegally obtained prescription hormones outside of the US and manipulated fertility treaments to get multiple$. Then had the enormous balls to go to the media and say since science created fertility treatments, society should pay for the outcome. She carefully outlined in her journal how she beat these miracle babies, then went on the road telling church goers how much she loved and cherished them. All while taking grocery money in God's name from little old ladies who were led to think they were giving to a STRUGGLING YOUNG COUPLE, not a scheming snake with 2 million in the bank. She then co-authored a book telling the complete lies. And that's just part 1 of the fraud.
Seriously? Seriously? Robert uncovers and proves "How Kate Gosselin Fooled The World" and your concern is that he might make some money? You question his motives? He was too quick to put up the PayPal button that WE begged him to put up? You actually "question" someone who uncovered the lie, the fraud, and the child abuser that Kate Gosselin is? Would you rather he stayed silent, then if God forbid there was a tragedy, he would have to live with that?
This country spent too many years looking the other way and 'staying out of other people's business.' And there's PLENTY of gravestones dotting this country to attest to that.
Anon or 'a question' or whatever your sock of the minute is, you come here to stir shit. You are the same person, you have the same writing style, it's always the same outcome. You constantly post an opinion that is not one that is shared here, then demand we all answer it your satisfaction- meaning you want us to AGREE with you. It's NEVER going to happen so stop trying and go the F away. You said it yourself last Saturday evening, we are "sanctimonious bullshitters", we give you "typical 15 minutes poster crap" and when we facetiously agree with you it's "playing silly games." Do you see how f-ing ridiculous you are???? That right there proves you are not looking for civil conversation, just to be an a-hole. PLEASE go be an a-hole somewhere else.
To my fellow 15 minutewomen, we are going to have to stick to our guns and ignore, ignore, ignore until their crap is shoveled and swiffered. There is no resoning with this person because they are not here to reason. They are trying to start a fire, let's not throw anymore gas on this jerk.
And BTW anon, socko, a question, whatever. Do not bother answering. It's my day off and I'm gone until late this evening. Don't waste your time, I will not see it. Don't go away mad, just go away.
Follow the money, as they say. PA had the best marketing campaign in those children. No one wanted the gravy train to stop and I wonder how many people saw how wrong it was filming these kids in little vignettes, hitting all the sights, rides and activities in rapid fire fashion.
Lots to do, things to get on film, schnell!
On woman's account of watching the kids film at Sesame Place was sad. It was a hotter than Hades day and she said the kids were not really enjoying or playing, they were placed where they were supposed to be, filmed and then whisked off to the next scene. No fun at all.
So that's why I've always found it so disingenuous when Kate wants to single out certain persons who make money off the kids and not all the others with whom she is in cahoots for freebies etc.
If Kate sanctions it, you are simply in a quid pro quo agreement with Kate. If Kate doesn't sanction it, you're using her kids to make money.
Can't have it both ways. Unless you're Kate, of course, because no one makes money off the backs of her kids unless there's something in it for her.
wayward, I don't know if I believe this 100%, but I'm leaning that way. Which is to say, I think it is so hard for me to wrap my brain around something as diabolical as wanting, even manipulating a HOM pregnancy which is dangerous if not deadly to mom and babies.
These are just a few of my thoughts concerning how Kreider operates when it comes to the abuse of the kids. I believe without a shadow of a doubt that they were/still are ( to a lesser degree due to their ability to perhaps talk about it as they get older) physically abused. They have suffered horribly at the hands of their 'mother' and, I believe, even today are having their minds screwed around with her emotional/mental abuse.
Why so isolated? No outside of compound activities, sports, etc. co
I mean, reall??....8 kids, more than enough money to pay for these things, heck..she even has help with the kids so no excuse as to it being impossible to manage a schedule of getting the kids where they need to be...even if some occur at same time, etc. She does not want the kids to have the ability to 'blow it' by saying something that may make people within earshot go'hmmm?'. If Kreider cannot be in control, right there, WITH the kids, they simply don't get to be there.
They have been schooled big time but she still isn't going to take chances because, chances are very, very good that any one of the kids, just because they are kids, will say/talk about the 'wrong thing'. Those kids are probably scared shitless most of the time, worried about what may enrage her. She has bullied them for as long as they can remember, brain washed about all they stand to lose if Kreider is not a STAH. I think that, possibly, the lunch notes serve 2 purposes for Kreider: she gets to look like the wonderful mother by doing it and, more importantly, they are a way to confuse/guilt the G8 if any one of them even considered talking to somebody at school about what life REALLY is like for them at the orphanage. It's a way of guilting them up, therefore, shutting them up!
This is all nothing new for those kids...it's been that way forever. All hell will break loose when the kids realize that she's a psycho. Truly realize and blow up her mess of a fantasy life she has carefully crafted for her adoring public.
Cannot wait for her house of cards to crumble all around her!
I think Kate's done the last of her "blogs" for CC. Let's face it, love her or not so much, Kate's blogs were pedestrian at best and unprofessional at worst.
She did no research and her "advice" was nothing more than personal missives that held no broader meaning to the average person. Not to mention, like the elephant in the room, is that Kate has millions and has grifted more freebies than anyone could in 10 lifetimes.
CC looked the fool for having Kate write about "expensive" coffee on one hand, and PUBLICLY grift Keurig, Starbucks, Coffeemat and Green Mountain on Twitter.
Kate did not even mention, that you can reuse the fall decorating stuff, every year, except for real pumpkins and gords, and the hay. Thus, this would save you a lot of money. Didn't mention, the difference between buying fake pumpkins vs real. Not to mention that Michaels & Hobby Lobby and Joann fabrics, Party Store, Menards have been having sales, on fall/halloween stuff, not to mention the Halloween stores, is true to Kate, not doing any research.
As for costumes, what happen to making them? There are plenty of parts for costume out there to get. Most of the stuff has been on sale for the past month, even the Party store, had a clearance, last month on costumes, up to 75% off. Kate never mentioned any of it.
Another useless blog, no savings there. Kate is so out of touch.
Kate doesn't buy candy to hand out because of the scads of kids who make it through the gate would cause her to go broke.
Save your money for the dentist bills instead of candy
Don't decorate for halloween
Last but certainly not least let me add that you should enjoy Halloween as an adult by treating yourself to a few days in NYC where you get all dressed up for Halloween on The View and your kids get clearance candy the next day because you don't like Halloween. Forget 8 kids who might love it, you don't so they have to look at your "Fall decorations" instead of a scarecrow.
Well, they do get to look at a scarecrow.
from the sheeple and fan tweeties "KATE IS NOT A CHILD ABUSER!"
I really dont understand how they think that way. You know for fact that if their hubbies (or wives) snatched up their precious 2 year by their hair, and beat them with wooden (or plastic) spoon and then THREW that poor baby as hard as they could into their crib, they would be screaming ABUSE. And probably demanding full custody. You know they would. It is so irritating to hear them say there is no abuse, or that khate is not an abuser.
Un-F'n- believable.
Weren't teahers (way back in the day) allowed to smack kids hands with rulers? AND THEN IT WAS BANNED? Wonder why that is? Sheeple, anything? Thought so.
************************************************
I suppose to certain people, an abused child has to have obvious bruises, and broken bones.
Although I do not personally agree with Kate's methods of dicipline (hitting with spoons, pulling hair, etc...), I believe that Kate is more of a proficient mental & emotional abuser.
Read the 'fall' blog. She said 'typically' and 'littles' so it must have been written by her-plus not much substance. she says they are not 'big' on Halloween and she has the kids use their old dress-up clothes for costumes. Oh, and watch for sales on candy and don't forget, candy will cause more trips to the dentist.
This from a woman whose child's molar rotted in her mouth and toddlers had cavities.They don't 'typically' give out treats.
( Let's Throw Tomatoes.). I have made the statement before that kids tell the teacher everything, and of course that's a broad statement , but its like your friend telling you everything except that she beats her kids, or her husband is fooling around. BTW, it's more the really young ones(. K-2 ) as they get older they keep personal info to themselves! Now this is my opinion but I think whether you're a child or an adult you tend to stay silent if you're being abused for whatever reason.
Oh, and those two abused kids that were in my class were both boys .
The person who responded to my comments last night was being argumentive, maybe I shouldn't comment at night!
God, how depressing.
So trick or treating was allowed because TLC filmed it? What kind of a confusing message does that send to her kids?
It's a pagan holiday for Kate, but it's o.k. as long as she's getting paid to film it.
Kate worships at the church of fame & fortune.
Tomatoes -- you did say that kids tell you EVERYTHING...this was in the context of child abuse, and implied that if a child was abused, he or she would tell the teacher.
------ ----------------
It is a studied fact that ANYONE that is abused doesn't speak about it to others because of the fear they have that it will only bring on more abuse if found out they have told. Just like when a kidnapper threatens the one they kidnapped that if they try to get away they will kill them or their family. It is a very successful psychological tactic that is used to put the fear of God into them.
Do you remember in the RV episode when Jamie was offering Ashely a hundred dollars to soak Kate with the water gun? One of the children that was in the raft warned that Kate wouldn't let them have dinner if they got her wet. Man the seriousness on her little face and her holding her finger upward like you do when you really mean "you better not do that!"
And when they were with Palin when Kate told the children they were now a Palin and not a Gosselin. That really made me go hummmm.
It is so sad that it works so well. Bottom line, it's manipulation and control.
&&&&&
I can't tell if she is suggesting she didn't participate in Halloween before because she doesn't believe in it, or because she's too cheap and doesn't pay for things that aren't grifted.
Is she the cheap bastard who turns off their porch lights and pretends they aren't home when Halloween comes by? Good Lord Kate candy is not THAT expensive. I start watching the candy sales in September and a couple weeks ago got two huge bags of the good stuff for 4 bucks on sale, you can get the cheaper stuff for even less. It's four measly bucks to make the neighborhood kids smile.
I am all for saving money and cutting corners but I also think there is a line where if you are reducing your quality of life or denying yourself joy in life, that's not worth the saving. Buying the cheap toilet paper vs. the expensive probably won't reduce your quality of life much absent a little chaffing. But cutting back on Halloween because it's just too expensive is denying yourself one of life's joys, and that's just sad.
I love how one of her tips is "do your research." Wait isn't that the point of her blog is to be the actual research? LOL a blog about saving money that tells you to just go do your own research. Hysterical.
Most people, anyway.
For the 16% of abuse cases that do come from teachers, I suspect more often than not it's because a teacher was helping a student with classwork and noticed a bruise on their arm, leg, neck or something. Probably not because Sammy said "Mrs. Smith Mommy hits me."
Kids are like puppies. Loyal to Mom and Dad. Often a kid will be terrified to be REMOVED from an abused home even if they are being severely abused. Because the unknown of foster care is worse than the known of abuse.
There's always something in it for her. To wit, bringing Shoka back, baking and even hanging with her twins, the new bffs.
This isn't a "neighborhood" or community where kids go from one house to the next on the same street, walking with parents from place to place. The only reason kids would trick or treat in this area is if they were driven, and the only reason they would go to this house is to see the Gosselins. They'd have to be admitted through the gate, which for security reasons, wouldn't happen. With all of the obsessed fans out there, I wouldn't open my door on Halloween either.
I believe Robert described the "neighborhood" in his book.
If the Gosselin kids want the Halloween experience, they could trick or treat at various outlet centers, the mall, or have a great time with their classmates at the school festival.
The outcome of our attempts is always that Admin is a bitch, we are rude and "the question" is never answered to anons. satisfation. Since you never get what you are looking for WHY DO YOU KEEP COMING BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kate illegally obtained prescription hormones outside of the US and manipulated fertility treaments to get multiple$. Then had the enormous balls to go to the media and say since science created fertility treatments, society should pay for the outcome. She carefully outlined in her journal how she beat these miracle babies, then went on the road telling church goers how much she loved and cherished them. All while taking grocery money in God's name from little old ladies who were led to think they were giving to a STRUGGLING YOUNG COUPLE, not a scheming snake with 2 million in the bank. She then co-authored a book telling the complete lies. And that's just part 1 of the fraud.
Seriously? Seriously? Robert uncovers and proves "How Kate Gosselin Fooled The World" and your concern is that he might make some money? You question his motives? He was too quick to put up the PayPal button that WE begged him to put up? You actually "question" someone who uncovered the lie, the fraud, and the child abuser that Kate Gosselin is? Would you rather he stayed silent, then if God forbid there was a tragedy, he would have to live with that?
This country spent too many years looking the other way and 'staying out of other people's business.' And there's PLENTY of gravestones dotting this country to attest to that.
Anon or 'a question' or whatever your sock of the minute is, you come here to stir shit. You are the same person, you have the same writing style, it's always the same outcome. You constantly post an opinion that is not one that is shared here, then demand we all answer it your satisfaction- meaning you want us to AGREE with you. It's NEVER going to happen so stop trying and go the F away. You said it yourself last Saturday evening, we are "sanctimonious bullshitters", we give you "typical 15 minutes poster crap" and when we facetiously agree with you it's "playing silly games." Do you see how f-ing ridiculous you are???? That right there proves you are not looking for civil conversation, just to be an a-hole. PLEASE go be an a-hole somewhere else.
To my fellow 15 minutewomen, we are going to have to stick to our guns and ignore, ignore, ignore until their crap is shoveled and swiffered. There is no resoning with this person because they are not here to reason. They are trying to start a fire, let's not throw anymore gas on this jerk.
We've talked about hiding the bunny, the danger from bizarre fans, but on Halloween it's okay to open gates to strangers? I'm not talking about "locals" driving there to see the Gosselins. I was referring to those who could see trick or treating as a way to meet them face to face, even if they had to drive a distance to see them. It's a secluded area, and if I were Kate, I wouldn't open up a gate or anything else to strangers on Halloween. She brought this on all by herself. She's not a friendly person, and certainly no Dick Van Dyke.
In “the book”, Robert mentions how Kate uses Twitter to get the word out about upcoming birthdays in the family….She will especially begin tweeting at least a week before the event, in order to give plenty of time to her followers to send gifts.
I couldn't help but start watching Kate’s twitter over the last week, and she's so true to form. Here’s what she’s tweeted (and I've shortened some of the tweets to highlight the BD messages):
10/4: GM! ....working on my girls bday party prep!
10/4: I went to the party store to get party stuff and order balloons... Am I the last 1 on the planet to learn that there's a helium shortage??!
10/5: Standing in the aisle, picking out the 1 & the 2 candles for Mady and Caras cake. As I reached for them I almost burst in2 tears!
10/6: The party is ON! Homemade pizzas, cake/ice cream&a night swim...Tonight I still have 8 kids.... But they are all the same age;)
10/7: the littles girls & I are baking birthday school treats for C/M….
10/7: Bday baking is DONE! …..
10/7: I can't believe Cara&Madelyn will b 12 tomorrow! Last yr before teen years in Gosselin house!That's crazy isn't it??!!
10/8: Happy Bday to 2 of the most wonderful ppl ever born! I'm so thankful I was blessed w/ Cara&Mady!They are(2 of the) best parts of my life! XO
And…in case anyone missed the tweets, she used her blog at CouponCabin for not one, but TWO mentions:
It’s October again and for us, that means a really big birthday party…my big girls are turning 12! I can scarcely believe it!
Once we get past the birthday celebrations here....
Yup. Robert has her pegged.
So...just in case ANYONE missed it...today is C&M's birthday. In case you didn't know. Better get those gift cards in the mail, tweeties!!! The Queen has spoken!!!
How is this any different than going to the movies? Or gymnastics? Certainly they are just as exposed to people there. Why not hire Steve for the night if there is such a fear?
If you don't want to open your gate, how about a bowl of treats outside the gate? I get that the house is not in a neighborhood setting, but if they lived in their old house still I doubt they would participate there either.
I don't believe for a second Kate feels like Halloween is "dangerous" to her safety. She simply doesn't like other people.
Didn't way back when, she claimed she didn't participate for religious reasons? I can't quite remember, for some reason that sticks in my mind, but maybe I'm just thinking that because so many people here don't participate for that reason and it's just in my head.
As far as now, I can see why they would not do trick-or-treat, whether well-known or not. That doesn't happen in the rural areas even a mile or so outside of towns - you could be driving miles to get from one house to another to find just one that might do it.
There are a few areas that have "gated" communities or gated homes and they don't open up for the "public" to come in, either. Trick-or-treat basically occurs in the small towns and cities, where kids can walk. They come in from the nearby outlying areas and go into town, or don't go at all. Just the nature and logistics of the areas; it's not expected outside of a town.
---------------
This is so true. My mom didn't abuse psyically but she did emotionally. One time when I was little, my mom and I had an argument. I was so upset and I wanted her "in trouble" for upsetting me. I called juvenile detention center, my sis. was there a lot, and told them about the fight. After telling them my story they said they could come and get me and put me in a foster home. All of the sudden mom wasn't so bad. I told them I didn't want that, I just wanted them to punish her. Silly me, the mind of a child. Eah?
The truth is, most abused children don't know that ALL children aren't abused. Especially if they never play or stay over at a friends house. I remember my friends even saying, "gee, I wish your mom was my mom. She is so nice". I thought "your kidding me, right? I always wanted theirs. What a crazy life.
You know one other thing that is crazy? You know how some post here that the kids will probably leave and hate Kate when their adults. Well, my mom was and is famous for guilt trips to get her way. All my life I have tried to please my mom but it was never enough. Presently, I'm taking care of her because she is starting to loose her mind. I find that even though I know that her meanness is her issue and not mine, I still try to get her approval and she still treats me mean. I do wish I was good at managing it but it's a work in progress.
Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...
Njay, wow, and I so agree.
I think what would surprise people who blessedly don't have a lot of first hand experience in this terrible area of our society, is that it's actually a red flag when a kid is so freely talking about the abuse or doesn't want to go home.
It usually means one of two things. That the abuse is so incredibly horrific beyond all imagination that it's pushed the kid beyond his limits and made him willing to even go into foster care if it means he doesn't have to go home, OR, that frankly, the kid is making it up.
That's how closely guarded kids usually are about abuse. It's the outward signs they can't help that usually get it reported--the bruising, dirty, not showing up to school, withdrawn, acting out, etc.
Why would you set a bowl of treats outside the gate when this is not a neighborhood that kids frequent on Halloween? I'm sure the raccoons would appreciate it, though, or the trash collection people the next day! She does set out homemade bread for them!
Admin, there is no "community." You really have to see the property to know that there is no interaction here with locals. Kate doesn't like people; they don't like her, so it makes no sense for anyone to stop by for treats. We're not talking about an ordinary person here. Nobody is going to drive out there to see if she left treats by the gate.
By the way, I still haven't seen the dog. Then again, that means nothing because he could be inside, around the back, or wherever.
That's sad, Over in Kate's County. Although that's not really the point being made. The point being made is that Kate doesn't like Halloween because Kate doesn't like people. This holiday is a chore for her, not a joy. It's kind of beside the point that the area is not really set up to encourage Halloween. It could be, but it's not. Believe it or not the area I grew up in had houses spaces several acres apart and often very long driveways. The kids that lived in those neighborhoods did it in cars. Halloween is huge where I am from and no matter what the set up, no matter how long your driveway or how rural your area is, it would happen. It's sad to hear that's not the case anymore.
Lol, I think she threw a lot of that away, not just Halloween, for a paycheck.
Admin, it sounds like kids are missing out, but really, they aren't. The "rural" kids just go into the nearest towns and walk the sidewalks with their school buddies from other rural places and have a great time, just like any other place. There aren't a ton of "gated" communities here and many of them are isolated and not large - you'd be driving miles to go trick-or-treating when the kids can just go a few miles into the nearest town and walk and trick-or-treat, attend community parties and parades of which there are many, with their friends. The kids I feel sorry for are those in the small but still inner-city areas who never have the opportunity because of safety issues in their own neighborhoods. Sometimes people will try to bring these youth into the small rural towns so they can experience the fun, but it doesn't happen a lot, sadly.
My community - a highly religious one in GA, does something called Trunk-or-Treat. Churches and neighborhoods put them together, kids dont have to visit houses, and it's safe. Kids go from car to car with candy being handed out from the trunks. It sounds like a ton of fun! Does anyone in PA know if you guys have them? A great way to be a part of a community event- so of course Kate wont participate.
LIbrary I don't think kids who go to other neighborhoods are missing out. I'm talking about Kate not making an effort. Yes, her kids are missing out when she cuts corners like this.
Does anyone see a problem with Kate getting her Starbucks and manicures and tanning, but her kids have to wear some old clown costume for Halloween and probably be made fun of for it, have to eat stale candy, and can't pick out what they want? She is a millionaire. Off the backs of her kids. And they aren't even allowed a measly Halloween costume. It's her M.O., skimp on things for the kids, things she doesn't care about.
Tucker's Mom said...
I think it's sad that the G kids miss out on the experience of Halloween, be it neighborhood door-to-door or a party somewhere. It's that Kate doesn't "get it" and so the kids won't have any memories of Halloween, without cameras, that is. Last year was abysmal especially in light of Kate's participating in Halloween traditions with grown ups when her kids went without the experience all together.
You never know though. Sometimes, kids grow up to be parents and one or more of the G kids could wind up having Dick Van Dyke's house for Halloween!
Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...
Forgot about that. Last year Mommy got to wear an awesome zombie costume. So Kate gets a kick-butt costume and can have a ton of fun, but the kids have to rummage in the dustbin for some old school play thing they wore.
But Admin, $160 is an insanely unnecessary cost for costumes! Mani/pedis are necessary. So is tanning!
Duh!
I used to put on a bunch of my mom's costume jewelry and call myself a "gypsy". Did that a couple years. There's always the mummy and hobo. Ooooohhhhh wait, that's right, no wrapping the kids up in 20 rolls of TP unless the cameras are filming.
Tuckers mom, thanks so much. Lately it's been really, really hard and I've needed some kind of encouragement. I took care of my stepmom and my dad until the passed away in 2008 and 2009, they were never this hard. Stepmother had epilepsy and dad had dementia.
I had a half sis. that caused me so many problems that it nearly split me and my full bro. and sisters. Plus, unknowingly I went through menopause. I was so psychically a mess from her crap I thought I was going to literally thought I was going to die. Stepmom and dad were easy, half sis, EVIL.
Thank God I made it through. I went back to my faith and rode out the storm.
I think that Kate grew up in a religious community that probably dd not participate in Halloween festiviies. Now she uses that, and her basic cheapness and horrid laziness to deny it to her children. That said, if someone offered to pay for candy & costumes, organize the evening and film, film, film it, she would be all over Halloween. Perhaps with her upcoming faux participation in another marathon, and the new custody, the kids will get Halloween with ther dad.
Piece of work, Our Kate.
Not buying candy?
Not buying customs?
Not spending money on gas taking the kids TrT?
What a wonderful loving mother she is. Last year old candy on TrT no friends.
Katie Krieder wins the award (again!) for the cheapest, most tight-fisted Scrooge of a mother. C'mon Krieder, we know you have millions squirreled away in various accounts - cough up some of it to pay one "helper" or another to go out and buy 8 costumes and some Halloween candy.
She doesn't even have to take them trick or treating. Most communities (and some schools) these days put on Halloween events, so that parents have a safe place for their young children to enjoy Halloween. My local YMCA puts on a Halloween party every year and I took my son several years in a row when he was younger. They had all sorts of fun booths, ways to win prizes, a cake walk, lots of treats, and it was good safe fun for kids. But ole Krieder McScrooge says "boooooooooooooooo!" to doing anything for her kids, especially if it costs her money.
Coupon Cabin is a joke to have Krieder remain as one of their bloggers. I know what it means to struggle financially (as I'm sure many on this blog do as well). You don't need to spend much money to be able to provide fun times for your children. If I could scrape together the funds, I know Scrooge McKrieder can do the same.
part one
It’s October again and for us, that means a really big birthday party…my big girls are turning 12! I can scarcely believe it!
Once we get past the birthday celebrations here, there are fall and Halloween things to think about. I am not big on Halloween, so instead I typically decorate for fall, which includes Halloween and Thanksgiving. I’ve always saved a lot of money by decorating for fall (versus Halloween) at the end of September and keeping those same decorations up through Thanksgiving. Without specifying and by being more holiday neutral, I am not only saving money but also saving time because I don’t need to redecorate for a full two months. Yay!
For Halloween costumes, we typically use items from our huge collection of dress-up clothes from the big wicker chest in our basement. This year, my littles will hopefully be able to reuse their clown wigs from their school spring concert last year, but whatever they choose, it’s always fun to mix and match and create a unique look while saving lots of money. To be more detailed on the amount of savings that our version of costumes provides, eight costumes at a low average of $20 per outfit equals $160. That is an insanely unnecessary cost!
aggiemom09121416 said...
part two
Beyond costumes, there’s the cost of handing out treats. We don’t have much experience with it, but what I do know is that candy is expensive and that in a well populated trick-or-treater area, the cost can add up fast! Make sure you do your research, use coupons and watch for Halloween sales!
Hopefully you will be able to save enough money on the purchase of your “hand out” candy for the inevitable dentist bills that are coming every parents’ way once the last piece of candy has been plucked from that cute little plastic orange pumpkin! :)
Happy fall, all!
XO,
K8
FYI said...
Kate writes that she decorates for "fall" rather than Halloween. Then she explains how costumes could easily cost her $160, how candy is expensive, etc.
Last year, she tweeted a picture of her fall decorations--but no picture this year.
And speaking of expense--last year she also had a photo shoot of her and the kids on their property with her "fall" decorations. Those photos are on her website. ROL also had an article about it:
http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2011/10/kate-gosselin-kids-halloween-photos-shoot
Tell me that photo shoot didn't cost her a pretty penny--just for the decorations alone--but she can't spend money on costumes and candy for her kids.
If something isn't to Kate's benefit, it doesn't happen.
When my son was in preschool (a non-denominational one but attached to a church), they did trunk or treat. It was an absolute blast and I felt it was a perfect way to allow your children the fun of dressing up, running around receiving candy, and participating in little games. I live in what I'd call a liberal or progressive part of northern California. So if we have trunk or treat, I would bet dollars to donuts that PA churches or other organizations would be doing the same. But even that is too much trouble for Kate Krieder.
Here's a great holiday "tradition" for the G kids on Halloween. Since Kate's not into it, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that, how about she traditionally allows them to dress up, drives them over to Jodi and Kevin's house/neighborhood so they can ToT with their cousins!
Win-win.
Exactly Kat. Sounds like a big bunch of sour grapes as far as I'm concerned. I doubt Robert is going to make much money off the book, especially since it got yanked by Amazon. I hope he can work out the legalities and if necessary, revamp the book, get it proofed and professionally edited, and back out there for the public.
As to those who are supposedly so concerned that we (the collective "we" of this blog) are being taken because Robert now has a Paypal button on his blog: We are all adults. If some of us choose to send some money to Robert, what business is that of yours? It's my money and what I do with it is my business.
Don't have a problem with not buying pre-made costumes - they can be a little pricey and we encouraged our kids to be creative in coming up with ideas and then we'd buy or create the "parts" (fake Lego costume, anyone, made out of a box and paper cups? Kid won a prize with that one every year, lol. Total cost - 1.00). And the local town's sidewalks are packed with "hoboes", "hunters", and "limberjacks" on trick-or-treat! :)
Candy is cheap at the dollar stores, often name brand. Does she ever say anything about places like that? I don't recall that she has -except I imagine CC doesn't pay for dollar store promotion...
Didn't Kate say last year that the twins were trick or treating with their friends...or am I imagining that?
When is Kate's run -- is it at the end of the month? Hopefully Jon will take them all to the festival at school. It's a really big deal, they get to have fun with their classmates, try their skill at games, go through the haunted house, and it doesn't matter if they are in costume or not. At least it's something they could do that wouldn't, according to Kate, cost an arm and a leg.
Didn't TLC decorate the entire basement one year, and turn into a like a haunted house? Or did I dream that up? She sounds like the mother from h*ll and is patting herself on the back for the all of it. Poor little rich kids! Still being punished because they are unemployed.
' a really big birthday party' for M and C is 3 guests each? That's fine, but Kate shouldn't make it out to be an extravaganza.
I agree, Kate's dislike of Halloween has more to do with her feelings about people than religion etc. What if the kids are invited to T and T with friends/ Can they go, clad in old clown wigs and baby dress-up clothes?
Her 'traditions' are devoid of family spirit, community fun or anything but how it sounds on Twitter and looks in posed twit pics.
Yea, but remember all the chaos and exhaustishness she experienced trying to make the 'littles' cakes for their bday? all the moaning and bitching about it, and she produced two dinky cakes.
3 kids each for each twins probably WAS extravaganza to her.
Geez Kate. Last year it was delicious candy? This year that stuff causes cavities. Make up your mind. Your warped, sick mind.
The more I read RH book the more repulsive she gets, as if that's possible.
Oh and I wish she'd stop calling the sextuplets "littles" like they were her pet hamsters.
Yeah, the 'Xmas wrap' Robert discussed really shocked me. The TLC 'Xmas' had festive packages, and now they are without a show, they have to use newsprint? I wonder what other ways they are shown what the show ending cost them? Blaming the kids. And taking the fun of believing in Santa away from them.
I recall the Dilleys used brown paper one years, but they put pretty gold bows and stencils on the packages and they looked really nice, as if someone cared!
I would so love for Kate to go on a nationally syndicated show and be asked if she still beats her kids, does she keep a wooden spoon in ALL
of her vehicles, why her boys were photographed wearing clothing several sizes too large, why she keeps posting pictures of the children now that they are off tv, especially a provocative picture of an 11 year old's leg. What? Your fans NEED to see them? What about the CHILDREN'S NEED for a childhood.
I always believed that those kids were hit. No 2 year old zooms to time out. But the ABUSE is sickening).
A dating show? Really? Will you be doing hot tub and makeout scenes? Will the kids be staying with Jon? You get my drift.
Amyf, I think of you often and hope you regain custody of your cats.
