Discussion Thread: 'Kate Gosselin: How She Fooled the World,' Chapters 8-10

'I know without a doubt that we did the right thing.'

We will do a “book club” style discussion of a few chapters at a time as we read the book together. You are free to read with the group or skip ahead. You are also free to discuss whatever you like, however if you want to partake in the book club discussion, this thread is here to discuss the designated chapters. Robert Hoffman’s book “Kate Gosselin: How She Fooled the World” was available on Amazon for Kindle, but has been suspended with an unknown date when it will be available again. The Kindle app is free for multiple platforms, including PCs.

8. Show Me the Money!!!!! Part 1

Kate has been marketing the sextuplets even before they were born. She invited dozens of media to their first birthday party. She requested a 15-passenger van and that people give Target gift cards in lieu of sending gifts.

Kate was extremely paranoid that other families with multiples could steal her thunder. Betty Hayes, a New Jersey mother of sextuplets and two sets of twins, called Kate asking about their first special and about being paid and receiving freebies. Kate writes that she is “mad” that the Hayes are getting another special, and “I am merely trying to provide for my family and rely on the Lord to do so! He is in control and I HATE this competition pressure I am forced to deal with!

After the first Discovery special aired and did well, talks commenced for a second special and a 20-episode contract. Discovery agreed to pay the family $2,000 an episode, with many things comped including Disney World and the grocery shopping trip to Giant. Kate was involved in a lot of back and forth e-mails with producer Jen Stocks about episode ideas and money. As time went on, Kate grew more demanding about what things Discovery would comp. She also continued to take checks and cash from fans, friends and relatives, sometimes checks for several hundred dollars or more.

In October 2006, Kate’s grandmother died. Kate wrote this about the funeral: “Her service was nice except that our mother tried to preach to us children through her tribute to grandma… none of us appreciated that!!!”

In March 2007, Kate called Discovery’s treatment of them “wining and dining”  and refers to it as a “magical time.” For season two, Jon and Kate wanted $6,000 an episode. Discovery negotiated them down to $5,000.

Kate obsessively tried to line up other money making opportunities, for example commercials. She accused Discovery of “sucking the life” out of deals after there was concern a commercial she wanted to do for Fridgidaire might compete with some of their other advertisers. Kate had visions of filming even when she was “old and gray.” In one email she writes: “I also want to secure a 'foreverness' for our family (house, college etc) that goes beyond our show so that when I look back when I am old and gray (and probably STILL filming- ha ha) I know without a doubt that we did the right thing.”

9. Show Me the Money!!!!! Part 2

The Gosselins made less money per episode than some sources have reported. Season one they made $2,000 an episode. Season two and three they made $5,000 an episode. Season four was $9,000 per episode, which was later re-negotiated to $22,500. Season five stayed at $22,500 per episode.

Kate hired a new manager, Julie Carson May, in April 2008. May was heavily involved in contract negotiations. She fought to try to limit the family’s commitment to the show to an average of three days a week, that each season include at least 35 episodes, and that the family would be compensated for episodes even if they used old footage from previous seasons (i.e. flashback episodes), for first class travel and “overages” of $600 a day per family member and $75 per diem per day per family member. She proposed a ghost writer to write TLC’s Jon and Kate blog because Kate didn’t have time. Tax obligations were flagged as something to be discussed. She wanted the family to have input and approval over merchandising.

The list of freebies Kate was able to get Discovery and others to pay for or at least offer to her is astounding. Landscaping, fences, Gymboree, ski clothes for Cara, a condo near Cancun, a beach house in North Carolina, an offer for filming a breast augmentation in San Diego and subsequent recovery at a resort called The Hideaway  [Admin note: My source says Kate ultimately chose Dr. Glassman to do her breasts, without filming. In the book she indeed says she has a choice between Glassman (but no filming) or San Diego (filming), though doesn’t say which one she ended up choosing. One wonders if some kind of executive decision was made to keep the boob job secret for image reasons, even though they had an offer to film it.], at least $500 a week at Ann Taylor, make-up, Olay daily facials, Crest whitestrips, camping equipment, furniture, Charmin toilet paper, invisible fence for the dogs, and a trip to Niagara Falls. Kate responded to an offer from a doctor to give just Jon Lasik surgery that she wanted it for both of them. Kate frequently follows up with those who gave her free things, straight out asking for more and claiming how much she talks about how great their products are.

Kate once shamelessly skipped out on a scheduled weekly conference call with Discovery to go to the spa. There were also discussions about a deal for Cara and Mady to “write” a series of children’s books. Perhaps most disturbing of all, there was discussion about designing an iPhone game around the children. Part of the game description includes: “The game starts with the player taking on the roll of Kate on Monday morning.   The player must get through 7 day/night cycles to win the games first level.   Each level will not only be separated by days, but each day will also be separated in sections breakfast time, lunch and dinner time, with bedtime being the goal the player trying to reach each day. The first week is an example of basic daily life, from getting the oldest kids ready for school to getting the rest of the kids ready for their meals, in this case breakfast. Each of the kids run of different timers, where they will get antsy, crying or even have a full tantrum depending on how long they are left alone or not given what they need.”

Kate and Beth received a $100,000 advance for their book Multiple Blessings. A deal with Kmart for their holiday campaign that only required three-days of work paid $158,000 plus up to $5,000 for a security team of Kate’s choosing. There was also a $25,000 Proctor and Gamble deal.

10. A Family Under (Discovery's) Control

Discovery maintained a frightening amount of control over the family contractually, including where they would travel, what they wore and even how they styled their hair. Discovery also had several provisions limiting their liability and obligations to the family. They specifically prohibited the Gosselins from subjecting their contracts to union rules such as SAG. [Admin note: Huge red flag they were taking advantage of the family and actively trying to circumvent any built in protections in the entertainment industry’s unions.] The contract also included a provision that the Gosselins would “guarantee” the children’s “performance” and “obligations.” Discovery released themselves of all responsibility in the event of an accident or even death. They also had a provision excluding them from any worker’s compensation claims. Any personal photos and video the family took in the course of the show was the property of Discovery. Discovery could terminate the contract at any time for any reason without owing the Gosselins a cent.  It was the Gosselin’s obligation to secure any necessary work permits and travel documents. They also wrote in the right to sue should any member of the family breach any of their obligations. In other words, Discovery could bail on the family at any time without consequence, but there would be hell to pay if any member of the family ever tried the same thing (and as we all saw, there was).

Yeah, the 'Xmas wrap' Robert discussed really shocked me. The TLC 'Xmas' had festive packages, and now they are without a show, they have to use newsprint? I wonder what other ways they are shown what the show ending cost them? Blaming the kids. And taking the fun of believing in Santa away from them.

--------------------------------

Why doesn't she go to the Dollar Tree? The Christmas wrapping rolls are BIG rolls, and they sell the extra wide for large packages. After Christmas they are fifty cents a roll. She could buy 20 super huge rolls for ten dollars and put them away for the next year.

Going back a ways in posts, Berks Resident and Tuckers Mommy, brought up great points re Follow The Money! the value to the state of Pennsylvania of the free advertising they got via the show being filmed there. The value to the town of any income from filming via permits, etc, whatever they have regs on. The value from the crew paying for local housing, meals, etc. Profit off babies and toddlers. Profit from continued filming. Profit froma child abuser not being outed.

I thought CC pulled Kate's "blogs" until this new Halloween blog today (what a plethora of helpful information!!). You have to click on Kate's icon for running, then find her blog under "Kate Gosselin".
She just tweeted links to CC over the past week or so and I thought they'd stopped her nonsense missives.
Apparently, they don't care how foolish it looks to have a millionaire grifter give savings "advice".

I'm really not over how they, Jon and Kate, didn't want to lie to their little kids so they did not believe in Santa Claus. It's hard to make sense out of anything Gosselin. Kate hasn't had a problem with "mistruths" so I just don't get the no Santa Claus. I agree that if it doesn't matter to Kate, no money will be spent. It's beyond tightwad mentality. It's selfish to the max! Jon does not get a pass on any of this. What was he thinking?

I, too, wish that term "littles" would just stop. Sounds demeaning and really dumb.

160 bucks for 8 kids once a year is not an insanely unnecessary cost. Especially for a millionaire. Cut out Starbucks, manipedis, and hair frying for one month and easily that's well more than 160.

It's not the kids' fault there are 8 of them. She is an unbelievably selfish, selfish mother.

Admin #152, I'm just weighing in on the Halloween issue and trick or treating. My grandsons are out in the country and the few homes/farms nearby are far apart. My DD and SIL drive the boys to the houses on the country road they live on. They they drive them to the great-grandparents home about 35 minutes away. They live in a sweet little neighborhood and the boys go trick or treating there.

Hi all, long time lurker. First time poster. I just read her CC blog - and I feel all of us can do a better job than she can in terms of how to save money for halloween. How about clipping coupons ($1 off 2 bags of Hershey's candy, for example)? How about shopping at thrift stores like Salvation Army and Goodwill for Halloween? My kids get great costumes from these stores. She is not in touch with the "mediocre" people. Why write a Halloween blog when you claim that you just aren't into Halloween? She is just not relatable.

Formerly Duped said...

I really don't think it's a matter of money for Kate. I think she is perhaps 'punishing' the kids by saying now that the show is over they have to cut back- thus the no-frills for the kids (except of course private school tuition) Or maybe she just doesn't care to do the fun things of childhood with them- like the 'pretend play' on the show as mentioned in The Book . Too lazy, doesn't truly value them, she's in charge thing, idk. The house is not
kid-friendly. They have the playroom where she throws all their toys out on the floor to clean up, their bedrooms she trashes or keeps them prisoner in, and usually just dumps them into the POOL regardless of the weather.

Welcome! The Sunday paper was chock-a-block full of candy coupons this week. We usually buy a huge bag or two at Costco, but right after Halloween, Christmas, Easter, the name brand candy goes on sale at all the supermarkets and that's when I use my coupons, if I'm using them at all.
Hate when they have that candy at 50% off right inside the grocery door!

Places filmed in PA:

Chocolate World
Sesame Place
Hands On House
Young Chef's Academy
Dutch Wonderland
Please Touch Museum
Crayola
Pittsburgh Zoo
Shady Maple
The Castle
Sight and Sound
Strasburg Railroad

There may have been some I'm missing, but it's hardly enough to support PA in terms of advertising revenue. PA got to be too mediocre after awhile...they were on to bigger and better things.

Are you saying that CPS covered up and/or didn't investigate child abuse claims because to expose them would result in the state not profiting from filming?

There was no income from permits, thus the whole child labor laws/work permits fiasco. There should have been permits, but this was conveniently overlooked. PA slipped up on this, big time, and then, for whatever reason, decided not to assess any penalties.

Kate is the ultimate cheap-skate! I have lived on a tight budget all of my life, but my kids always had costumes and candy at Halloween. I was reared by my grandmother and she, too, was on a tight budget. We had costumes (homemade) and plenty of candy to pass out to our friends. CouponCabin needs to break her contract, or plate which ever fits the example. The woman is a human contradiction to put it mildly. Who would ever take advise from her? Something is so wrong with the whole Gosselin saga.

Do you remember in the RV episode when Jamie was offering Ashely a hundred dollars to soak Kate with the water gun? One of the children that was in the raft warned that Kate wouldn't let them have dinner if they got her wet. Man the seriousness on her little face and her holding her finger upward like you do when you really mean "you better not do that!"

****************

Interesting. I was rewatching the Utah episode the other day and Beth babysat while J and K went to dinner. M wanted to take her dinner at the counter where she was on the computer and Beth said no, your mother said if you did not come to the table to send you to bed without it. Then M did something to a tup, Beth told her to be nice and M replies "I will NOT be nice to her she's not a baby anymore." Beth said "Holy moly are you for real?" I just wonder what C and M's day to day social skill are like with the chaos, lack of correction for hitting/talking like that, and from what I've seen of their interaction with Clay.

Your post about the candy coupons was a good one. Any good coupon blogger would know that coupons come out near the holiday for the consumer to use now.

This got me to thinking. Does Kate even read the newspaper? I talking about hard core news (current events, politics, etc.). In all her tweets and even in Robert's book (her journal) she doesn't mention a single a newspaper article, unless its about herself. No matter who busy I am as a Mom, employed full-time, etc. I always read the newspaper. Not just for the information but to be able to have a conversation should topic come up during the day. When she was on the View as a guest host, she did not jump in with anything to add to the discussion. IMO she had no knowledge base to draw upon, thus nothing to contribute to the conversation.

So say she doesn't read the paper, that would mean she wouldn't necessarily know about the coupons available in the newspaper. Which I now circle back to how can she be a coupon blogger and not know about these coupons?

LaLaLandNoMore said...

I agree, Admin, that Kate is a "selfish, selfish mother. If it isn't about her or for her or benefitting her she just doesn't want to spend the money or the time. She is the "stah" don't you know? Someone is still pumping her ego up to the moon. It's ugly, just ugly.

How about eBay? We got some great deals on costumes that were in perfect condition, worn only a few hours, for one dollar (retail price for one gorgeous Cinderella ballgown was $75.00. Price sticker was on the inside tag).

Or...what about costume rental from the local community theater or college? Some even will put them out on loan for free. You can get really great complete costumes, hats, wigs, shoes, swords, for as little as two dollars per costume.

I always thought that the most fun with costumes was making up your own. I remember when I was in school, my friend and I decided to go to a party at the last minute and we needed a quick costume. Her father had super large barrels in the garage. He affixed suspender straps on them and we went in barrels. Of course, going to the bathroom was a challenge!

Ooooh, butterfly and Sweet Tart, our church does Trunk or Treat, too! I love decorating the inside of the trunk with the lights and pumpkins, and tape recorder with spooky sounds. I think the adults setting it up have as much fun as the kids going from car to car!

On the Time to Organize episode they had, according to Kate, 'boxes and boxes' of costumes. They weren't el cheapo costumes either. You can bet she got them from some company. So now that she can't send out her form letter for product placement grifting, all of a sudden these things are unnecessarily and insanely expensive. Gotcha, Kate... If it's not handed to YOU on a golden platter, the kids platter is empty.

I also noticed she had a box full of Jon's things that he'd left behind. I wonder if the discs that RH found were in there. Bet she tossed them in the trash the way she did the kids' stuffed toys. Funny I never saw her toss anything of HERS out. Hoarder. And her basement shelves are FULL of free shit. Detergent, cleaning products, the whole ball of wax. I don't think she used coupons to get that stuff either.

Watching that episode now, in hindsight, is quite revealing.

Just Down the Road, whether a state in actuality nets that much profit from filming, believe me states feel that filming, any kind of filming in their state is a tremendous benefit and that they should do whatever they can to encourage it. It goes beyond the actual dollar. If PA becomes known as a state the blows the whistle on any child labor infractions or other issues, in theory, productions won't want to risk filming there. It may not be morally right, but it's in a state's best interest to be as accommodating as possible to production companies to encourage other production companies to come too. It eventuality adds up. It's also hard to pin point "good will." Look at how popular New Zealand has been since Lord of the Rings. We know it's popular but no one can say for sure how many more tourists have come there because of that. Jon and Kate is no Lord of the Rings but make no mistake states LOVE good will, any kind of good will.

California is not a "friendly" state to productions because they've cracked down all across the board, which is why so many productions are going out of state or out of the country these days. It's a big problem. Try to do right by cast and crew and productions flee.

This was even touched on in the radio show that Aunt Jodi did, there was no incentive for PA to crack down on TLC in any form.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

We should write our own Halloween savings blog with all your great ideas.

Another idea is to do a costume exchange with family and friends. Have a get together, everyone brings old costumes used prior years, and kids get to pick through them and choose which ones to borrow for that year. There are also many creative ways to find simple things around the house and turn them into a costume with a few tweaks. A pirate costume needs only an eye patch, almost everything else can be crafted from things you already have.

Kate, even if you don't have money, which you know damn well you have PLENTY of, there are ten different ways to give kids a wonderful Halloween without shafting them. Suck it. You and your Starbucks can just suck it.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Another tip is to watch for coupons for "new" candy. There are often big coupons for new kinds of candy to try to create buzz and get them selling.

Every year there is usually some new kind of version of candy out. For instance Snickers has some new peanut butter version this year. I saw a big coupon for it, and the store was also running a discount, so I could have grabbed a bag of that for about a buck after all was said and done.

When we moved into our home many years ago we decorated, bought candy and turned the lights on to wait for the little trick or treaters. NOTHING! It turns out because we live on a busy street no one trick or treats here. However when my daughters were old enough to go out we went with my friend and her daughters. She lived in a big neighborhood. We would go trick or treating and then back to the house for cider and donuts and to check out the loot they got. Her husband being a police officer always insisted on checking it to make sure it was safe. Actually, I think he was checking to see what he might be able to talk them into giving him. LOL. I never bought costumes. I always made them. They went as a bee, a table, the mermaid, Belle, Jasmine etc. All homemade. The girls are grown but they still have me make their costumes. My oldest daughter's fiance asked me to help with his this year. I love doing it and we have many fond memories of those happy times. Growing up I wasn't into Halloween myself but my girls were so I tried to always make it special for them, because after all isn't it what makes your children happy that counts. That is what makes lasting memories.

Halloween is once a year. I wonder how she feels about christmas? Only 1 gift per kid cuz anything more would be an 'insanely unnecessary cost'

&&&

I can't get over this. I think all these trips to NYC are insanely unnecessary.

She doesn't get it. She doesn't. There are so many benefits to Halloween. Or if you don't like Halloween, substitute just any kind of event or holiday where kids have fun. She wants to just write off these opportunities for kids to be kids to save money, she has no CLUE what kids need and where you should actually be spending money.

Hi Just Down The Road! Admin stated my point I was alluding to. A few years back, Elliott Yamin from Richmond was third place runner up on American Idol. The to three get hometown visits and coverage by the local Fox stations AND three hometown visits are featured on AI. The community was behind Elliott, and turned out for huge gatherings that the city mayor, the state tourism board, and the Governors office made happen in less than one week. The tourism head was quoted that the few minutes of coverage on Idol was worth MILLIONS, and gave the positive good will that money cannot buy.
For Elliott, what happened was a welcome really from the mayor at a plaza downtown with thousands attending, and special ” Virginia its for Simon lovers” signs, a private meet and greet at the governors mansion, a parade, and throwing out the first pitch at a ball game, in addition to visits to TV stations, radio stations, and the pharmacy he worked at before going on Idol. Hundreds of people worked very hard to pull it together, because they wanted Virginia highlighted on the show.

My cousin used to wrap presents (for adults) in the Sunday comics as her way of recycling - it became her trademark.

A friend who is quite artistic, uses brown paper that she decorates with things appropriate to the occasion; it's always charming.

Another friend and I have been trading the same gift bag back and for for several years. It's a private joke.

Kate, in her house with it's own gift wrapping station, uses newspaper endrolls? Can't even spring for gift bags at the dollar store? Nothing but the best for Katie; nothing for the kids. Killjoy.

Kate, it's not about STUFF. It's about thoughtfulness and love.

These are the leftover ends of newsprint paper that's blank and very thin. Some papers give it away to schools or charge a minimal amount. Knowing Kate, she probably put on her good bra and Daisy Duke's and flashed those pearly whites and got it for free.

I disagree that this was swept under the rug because the family was being filmed. Investigations are taken seriously. I worked with social services for many years, and no celebrity, high-profile person, politician, well-known CEO gets a pass with something as serious as this. I've seen it first-hand. The problem is that the state's laws need to be changed and I understand that this is now being handled by a task force. An investigator can only do what is permitted under the law. We don't know what was done in the case of the Gosselins because reports are confidential.

My son wanted to be Shel Silverstein's book "The Giving Tree" for one Halloween.

He collected a tub full of green leaves from our back yard and glued them all over the surface of a brown paper bag, which we slipped over his head. (With holes for his eyes and arms.) He shuffled because we wrapped brown fabric around his legs for the tree trunk.

He opted to stay home and give candy to trick or treat visitors -- because that is what a GIVING tree would do.

The memories of a costume soaked with the smell of Elmer's glue can still make me smile.

Even though it is clear what you said the first time around. THEN you accuse others of "picking on you" and make a big scene.

It is tiresome and that is why I don't normally read your posts. Besides your horrible grammar and spelling.

I can't imagine Khate reading a newspaper, and we know she doesn't cut coupons, so where would she get newsprint?

-------------------

All you need to do is to stop in at a local newspaper office and ask. It's not newsprint. It's the end of the rolls, or large flat sheets of plain white newspaper that are rolled up and bundled.

160 bucks for 8 kids once a year is not an insanely unnecessary cost. Especially for a millionaire. Cut out Starbucks, manipedis, and hair frying for one month and easily that's well more than 160.
_____________

OMG Administrator

Don't you know what Kate could spend $160.00 on?

Gas up the Audi.
GO to Starbucks.
Get her nails and feet done.
Get a tan.
Buy some gum.

So you now see why she can't spend $160 on the kids.

She has to have thees thing for herself.

I'm really not over how they, Jon and Kate, didn't want to lie to their little kids so they did not believe in Santa Claus. It's hard to make sense out of anything Gosselin. Kate hasn't had a problem with "mistruths" so I just don't get the no Santa Claus.
* * *

I'm sure it was Kate's "idea" that the children be told there was no Santa Claus. For some reason, Kate has a real desire to take the fun out of her children's lives, and she's been that way from the start. I'm sure we all remember how we would see over and again on the show, when the children began to have fun, she'd be sure to put a stop to it. Going for ice cream for dinner (a show idea, not something they'd ever do normally), the children began playing on the grass nearby until Kate shrieked at them to stop.

Dress up night - another contrived show idea. Kate was bored and wanted to cut it short.

One of the most painful ones I recall - sextuplets' birthday where they made their own cupcakes. Kate takes the boys' cupcakes away, won't let them have them ON THEIR OWN BIRTHDAY.

This woman gets her kicks by causing pain to her own children. Physical pain and mental pain. So that's why she took great pains to be sure they didn't get to have the little children's joy and pleasure in believing in Santa Claus. Horrid, horrid woman.

BTW any Discovery execs still reading this blog? See, this is what you associate with, and this is what I associate with Discovery now. But what do you care, since you earned so much money off those children's misery, right?

My sister works with Easter Seals and every year around Christmas they have a "store" of all the crafts they have made.

My sister taught the kids to take that newsprint, paint it with glue (or flour and water), place another over that, paint that with glue (and repeat depending how thick you want you it to be) and let it dry overnight and it turns into a nice thin manageable cardboard that they cut into designs, paint, with sayings, etc., like a kid looking out the back window of a bus or MOM or DAD or a book with a worm on it called book worm. They put magnets on the back for the fridge. I still have the bus magnet and bookworm that I bought at the store years ago when I was able to be there to help put the store together. They also make picture frames, book marks from them, all sorts of things. They are very cute and crafty.

I was raised in an evangelical church similar to the one Kate attended. We had Halloween parties and hayrides, and Santa came to our Sunday School class and handed out oranges and candy. I seriously doubt that Kate's religious beliefs are affecting her disapproval of Halloween or Christmas, but who knows what goes on in that mind of hers!

The tweets Kate makes about product deals(like the Zicam one this morning) is probably due to CC requiring her to in order to fulfill what's left of her contract.

Here's another, thing to add to Halloween: instead of giving out candy, they sell at Target for $3 a bag of 300: spider rings, skeltons, spiders, etc. dollar store carrys some of this stuff too. The Dollar store has pretty good Halloween decorations, also fall and Xmas, even Easter(when that time comes), the Dollar store actually cover all the holidays. Targets $1 to $2.50 stuff, when come in the store. They have some really nice stuff for cheap. Kate never mentions these stores for Fall decorating or that you can re-use your fall decorations next year. Fake vs real pumpkin, fake leaves vs real etc. This woman is LAZY, if the non-exist hire help, does not decorate, Kate comes up with some lameo excuse. For a person who is home all day. Unreal.

I'm home all day, spend some time here, some time looking for a job(online), spend a lot of time cleaning(that seems to be never ending)I own a 6 room home, with full basement and yard & garage. In 3 weeks, I will be packing the yard up. My kids are my pets. I've been cleaning the Living rm & Tv rm(corner to corner), too much dog hair, then will shampoo rug. I've got to finish painting 2 small rooms. I also volunteer at the greenhouse. I probably do more in one day than Kate does in a week.

I don't think all abused kids tell their teachers what's going on at home...it goes with being abused, they are scared to say anything.

Also, abused kids at least KNOW what's going on at home, if they are removed from the home that's an uncertainty (where will I live? who will take care of me? will I have to change schools? will I see my other relatives? will I see my friends again?)..

Some abused kids that find the courage to speak out, I applaud them. But I bet most don't say a word. It takes a lot of courage to speak out.

Okay, now I don't want to get anyone into an uproar, but if you really research the beginnings of Halloween, it is not a "pagan" holiday or one to worship the devil. It started based on Christian celebrations. Look it up on line and it's really rather interesting. Anyhow, just my 2 cents worth.

My only two abuse cases never talked!

I discussed this last night and this morning but apparently only Gimmee a break reads my comments! Thanks, again Gimme!!

LoveMyGrandsons said...

aggiemom, I agree that all kids do not tell someone about the abuse at home, for a variety of reasons. In my case, my mother always told us that all parents did this, and you just believe your parents. On top of that, my mother rarely did it in front of other people, so when at someone else's home, you just thought the other parents didn't do it in front of others, either.

As I got older I knew it was wrong, but didn't say anything because of fear, retribution from my mother, embarassment, most of all, the fear of being removed from my home-the only life I had ever known. In my case, I thought that if my own mother, who supposed to love me, could do this, what would a stranger do who doesn't know me or love me? Yes, there is a lot of guilt that is bestowed on abused children to make them think that they caused the abuse.

However, once I got into my mid-teens, I knew the truth for myself. Instead of thinking how to get out, I stayed as long as I could to protect my 2 little sisters. I eventually left, though, and felt guilty for years about that until I received counselling.

Okay, I'm off my personal soap box now; sorry to all.

Halloween #110, please don't misunderstand. I never said Halloween was to glorify God; my point was that is wasn't to worship the devil, either. I've read the various histories of it on line and they start with holidays that the Irish and English used to celebrate. It has definitely transformed far from those roots, but the original tradition was not negative or evil. That is the only point I was trying to make. Therefore, as a Christian, I never had a problem with my daughter, or my grandsons, participating in the fun of the holiday.

I think Kate did say something to this effect in one of her chair inteviews (think Jon was there, too, so it would have to be one of the first seasons) I don't want to put words in her mouth, but I am pretty sure she said something like you mentioned, she didn't want to give someone else the credit for something she did.

What in the h##l is this nutjob talking about? Jon's work ethic and morals improved while he was living with Kate? WORK ETHIC? She's so far gone that no recovery is possible. I only hope that she really is confined to some kind of institution because that's the only place she should be.

Ever since Kate got called out on Jon having 50-50, she's been overcompensating.

She acts like she has the kids every weekend, every holiday, every morning, afternoon and evening, every birthday, every birthday weekend. She can't even mention the other parent since then. Based on her tweets one might assume Jon has passed away, may he rest in peace. She really needs help, a lot of help.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I remember her actually saying that, that she feels Christmas should recognize who gives what.

It wasn't even about having some kind of religious objection to Santa. It was about some imaginary jolly man taking even a fraction of the credit away from Kate.

****

True, plus the fact that the book came out. She overcompensating for being called out as being a monster, and now she gives to die-for birthday parties, being the best mommy ever, ad nauseam.

I'm listening to Sandusky speaking out today, still proclaiming his innocence and blaming the victims. He's been convicted of 45 counts, and is saying that the media, Penn State, investigators, and the victims, etc., want prestige and attention. His sentencing is tomorrow. If he can blame the system he thinks they won't blame the abuser.

His wife has been his only sex partner, he claims. Everyone else is making him out to be a monster for accusing him of being guilty of these "disgusting" acts. Yeah, right, Jerry, blame everyone else but yourself.

Isn't this what Kate does...everything bad that happens is the fault of everyone else?

In Pennsylvania, imagine you are called to investigate aCPS complaint at the orphanage, faced with Ms Kreider and her minions and her that's of lawsuits. You see kids with food, clothing, beds, and no bleeding or broken bones. Are you going to seriously do any kind of intervention? Seriously? you betcha the celebrity factor is going to make you tread very carefully on this one. I think the fact the family was filmed DID influence any investigation or action decided on.

&&&

I firmly believe that's influenced a lot of things. I think one of the smartest moves dear Kate ever made was NOT to move to a celebrity laden place like NY or LA. She kept herself a novelty the rules don't apply to, and not just another celeb behaving badly. If she pulled that crap elsewhere no way would she get away with it. L.A. or NY wouldn't care about tourism and good will. PA does.

Churches in our area in upstate NY do trunk or treat and there are always harvest parties. Good grief Kate...it's always about you. A friend of mine likes to be green and save money so each year after Christmas she would buy yards and yards of clearance Christmas material from the fabric store. She would sew all kinds of bags in all different shapes and sizes and put pretty Christmas ribbon and make drawstring bags and would wrap all her presents in them. They were washable and reusable every year. She had bags for wine bottles and shirt boxes and even huge ones that could fit a bike. Very clever, green and a savings. There you go kreider! That's how it's done.

The date 25 December wasnt set aside, it was taken straight from pagan holidays. It is well known that christian holidays were integrated with pagan holidays to keep the converts. It's not a big deal, winter holidays are fun no matter what religion. I celebrate any holiday if it involves good times- even Eid and Now Roz, the Persian New Year. The more the merrier!! :D

Sadly, this reminds me of the church dinner where I offered a prayer before eating, thanking God for the food. One of the women in charge sniffed that she didn't think God needed to be thanked, he wasn't in the kitchen.

As for Halloween, I don't agree with its original purposes, but in the modern era I know it brings harmless fun to millions of children and adults. For this reason alone I sit on my front porch with Rubbermaid Totes overflowing with many kinds of candy so the children can show off their costumes and have a small treat.
I don't understand the harm in that. If I were handing out pagan tracts to Christian children
that would be a different story. Since I'm not, let the parade of costumes begin!

Right. I know that December 25 was called the birth of the sun, and as it turned out, it became a day to celebrate the Birth of the Son. I thought the original poster was saying that December 25 remains a pagan date of worship and asked how Christians feel about using that date to celebrate the birth of Christ. The pagan aspect of it has long been removed.

Hallowe'en began as a pagan holiday. Many gods are involved in pagan celebrations. Fire is involved in Hallowe'en, and I believe there are some tokens they bury. Most importantly, the souls of deceased ancestors are invited in for the evening. The home must be spotless and inviting, food must be cooked and set out so the souls can indulge themselves.

In the course of time, the Christians decided to, shall we say, hijack pagan holidays the best
way they could. For Hallowe'en they took the return of the dead souls and turned into honoring those who died as baptized Christians,
remembering their Godly deeds.

I am sharing information shared with me by a very dear friend who is Celtic pagan.

I agree Milo. Kate's journal entries are misquoted.

October 20, 2006 Today was a mad day!!!!!! I was really relieved that there was really nothing on the calendar besides the usual craziness! So we did the usual stuff: breakfast after the diaper changes and then we played in the basement and then lunch and then I put them all in their cribs and got the girls off to school and did my usual cleanup and ate lunch while watching the cooking channel and even got to sleep for a few minutes. The awful part came after nap….. I went up to get them at 3: 30 as usual, Hannah and Leah were still sleeping so I let them sleep! I got the other four and we went downstairs to wait for the school bus! When I went back up at 4: 30 the girls were still sleeping but I decided to get them anyway…. I went over to Leah and I couldn’t believe my eyes!!!!! Shewas asleep with poop from head to toe and all over her crib!!!!!! It was mashed into the bottoms of both feet and on her sheet, blankets, a book in her crib— some was even flung to the edge of Alexis’ crib!!!!! I was instantly angry and woke her up with my angry voice!!!!! I put her in the bath tub and stood her in an inch of water to soak her feet and showered her! The poor little thing was shaking wit h coldness or fear or something!

I'm sure she meant she was having a GLAD day. Or maybe a SAD day or even a BAD day. Surely she didn't mean she was having a MAD day!!!!

Thank God for Milo. If it weren't for her I wouldn't know what the truth is anymore. She just keeps getting smarter. #yeahright

Quick Halloween costume story.

When I was in my early 20s, my friends and I needed a quick, cheap costume. They were both working, it was up to me to have something ready so that when they finished, we could all head out to the party. I got 3 of the brown paper lawn/leaf bags, and using magic marker colored each side with a 7, heart, cherries, etc., and cut out armholes/head hole.

My one friend had a pair of sparkly silver glove, and she wore one on her right hand. We each "wore" a bag, and stood in a row as the human slot machine. Other partygoers would "pull down" on her raised silver glove and we would spin around until someone yelled stop.

Best costume ever. So much fun, so easy, cheap and simple.

So many posts to read! I've read several about Mr. Hoffman making money from the book.

Question ~ Because Amazon recalled (for lack of a better word) the book, did purchasers receive a refund? If so, likely he had Amazon related cost associated with the ebook process.

Speculation about him making $$$ by selling aspects of the book are simply that. It's my opinion Mr. Hoffman is very much in the red right now and probably under some type of gag order that's powered by threat of a lawsuit.

Too bad much of the information in the book didn't come out sooner, such as during K&8 run. It likely would have been more explosive had it occurred then.

Lastly, I have a family with two sets of twins plus one more child living directly behind me (standard suburban neighborhood). They're all under age 7, I believe. Although they've lived in my neighborhood less than a year, I feel like I'm living in "Distressed Children Hell". I've never heard so many, and so frequent, cries ever! I've taken to using my digital camera to record the audio. It's heart breaking.

Not only have I called our local CPS, I've telephone the police several times. So far, nothing. I cannot imagine that many of the G's neighbors (pre-Konpound neighbors) did not do what I've done. I've always believed the G's relocated in rural PA so no one would hear what goes on.

Sorry for being all over with this post, but once I began typing, all heck broke loose in my mind!

I don't know what I would say to the parents.
A 6' fence separates our backyards, so I'd have to stand on something to strike up a conversation. I have never seen them, but I hear them. The mother infuriates me. She seems to tune out her childrens' cries and screams.

A telephone report back to me from one investigating officer happened only once. Police logs report it was a 90 minute visit that time. Apparently the father is away a lot working and mother claims she's an overwhelmed single parent. One child has a disability and the others are too young to take meds for some disorder. The officer seemed to feel for the mother, not the children. Sadly, children with disabilities are 3.44 times more likely to be abused than those without.

CPS person listened to my accounts and took the childrens names (which I've heard yelled over and over). I mentioned my calls to the PD and my multiple audio recordings. No one, to date, has requested to listen to them. I can report that the multiple times per day occurrences have lessened to once or twice per day, about every other day... but their windows are closed almost all the time now. One time I did hear the mother shout out a threat to the kids that they could be taken away.

Why is it that the kids, who spend just as much time with Jon, aren't a reflection of him too? Why does Kate always get 100% of the credit?

&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Because Milo isn't in love with Jon. He's the enemy. I wonder if she sees Steve as her competition.

Bottomline, Fakekate is a miserable human being. Ask any adult that has spent any time with her that was not on the payroll

I thought you had a daughter? Regardless, the child sounds perfect. You must be proud of yourself.

toot toot - Thank you. I have a son. He lives in Texas and is an awesome adult. I am proud -- every day. (He is the Flight Aware guy.)

I feel sorry for Kate. She is grasping for glitter and junk and overlooking what is really important. She saved $160.00 on costumes! What?? She lost a fortune in memories.
