Happy Thanksgiving

Oops, that's not a turkey! We're always searching for reality worth watching to tell you about, and here's another. If you're looking for something light after a heavy Thanksgiving meal, try some sushi. Jiro Dreams of Sushi, that is. Jiro Dreams is a 2011 Japanese documentary (it has subtitles) about Michelin three-star sushi chef Jiro Ono, whose small, simple restaurant makes the best sushi in the world.

Ono has been working nearly his whole life. At age seven, his alcoholic father abandoned him, and at age nine, he started working in a sushi shop. He never stopped.

Ono's hard work and dedication is admirable, but his perfectionism is controversial among some. Once, one of his employees had to make 200 batches of egg sushi before Ono was satisfied. His sons, who are in their 50's, are still waiting to take over the restaurant. Ono admits he treats them harder than anyone else who worked for him. How far do you have to go to make a perfect plate, and can you go too far?

Discuss Thanksgiving, recipes, Black Friday, whatever suits your fancy, and Jiro, which is available for streaming or rent on Netflix, as well as Amazon.com. Enjoy your holiday!

Admin are there any judges in PA that might fit that bill? I am glad that there are judges out there that will do what is right for the children.

&&&

There's not really charges anywhere. Family law court is civil court. It's more just something a judge can use in deciding custody arrangements and how much credibility to give parents.

A psychologist can be very helpful in analyzing family dynamics, spotting the parental alienation, and helping a judge make custody decisions. My experience however is that this is a rather new concept, and it's taking awhile to get people educated on it as well as good at recognizing it when it's in front of them. The ones that do are sold on it though, as am I.

Taking a very extreme hypothetical, a Mom might come to court and tearfully say oh my goodness my daughter says my ex molested her, please, I must have custody. There may be many signs of parental alienation a judge who knows it might spot, therefore casting doubt on her accusations. A judge might actually give the father MORE custody if a mom pulls something like that. But in that example you can see what an important job they have in such serious matters trying to find the truth in all this. And sometimes the parental alienators say such serious things it certainly can be easier to just take the easy road and believe them in the interest of caution.

Sorry I didn't answer your original question.

There was that judge I think in Berks who spotted it in a father when he was putting a blog up basically blasting his wife. He saw it there and ordered him to take it down or he wouldn't see his kids.

Otherwise I really don't know anything about any of the judges in PA.

No I missed the latest shenanigans. What a mess. That poor kid.

One of Halle Berry's lawyers is a colleague of mine I've worked with several times, although I think she may have dropped her as I don't see her name popping up anywhere. I don't like Halle Berry's crap in all this but this lawyer does great work and has represented kids in family law court--something I desperately wish the Gosselins could get. I had hoped she might help bring her down to reality a bit maybe help her do what's best for her kid not herself.

I don't agree with them putting Jacob on T.V. so much at all. He is probably the one who will suffer the most from it being so young and that speaks to exactly how damaging it is to put little children on TV. The younger they are the worse it seems to be.

I don't think anyone who has ever put their kids on TV is evil. Jon did it too and I don't believe him to be evil. Kate is so far and away beyond what the Roloffs or any reality show mother has ever done it's absurd to even compare it. I don't recall Jacob ever sitting on the potty, or watching as he threw up (we once saw Zach throw up, but Zach was an adult over 18 who was perfectly capable of consenting to such footage). It was a terrible mistake to keep him on TV for so long, no question. The question really becomes if even Jacob had his school issues and whatnot from filming and he never had his privacy invaded near as much as the Gosselins did, what will happen to them when they are his age?

By the way, in the picture of Shoka there is some kind of a bed or sleeping bag in the background. Did anyone else notice that. I think it may be his bed or he is at Jon's house and it is a sleeping bag, maybe for one of the kids. Also I think he was wearing the glasses because his fur is pushed in where the frame is. Amen on the stinky boxers. Her uh, flatulence can wake me out of a dead sleep, it's so bad I'm afraid it's a potty accident.

On Halle Berry, wow she should be the poster mother for child alienator.

I noticed the parallels between she and Kate awhile ago. Gabriel told people that Halle told him he was nothing but a sperm donor, his part was done now he needed to go away. This is such a narcissist/alienator statement. I remember reading that Halle's friends saw this coming when Halle started talking about having a baby. They begged her to just go to a sperm bank, because Halle had no intentions of staying with Gabriel. She thought he was an idiot, but a beautiful idiot. Like Kate, she was only interested in making a physically beautiful child. But in true narcissist-armed-with-money style, it was more important to Halle do exactly what she wanted, then later down the road use her wealth and the legal system to get her way. Narcissists need and crave to have that power and to evade laws they don't feel should apply to them. The judge in Halle's case knew exactly what she was doing. It's a shame the stodgy old neanderthal judges we have here in PA aren't as enlightened. It's also a shame that Gabriel was clearly baited and fell for it.

If I were Gabriel I just wouldn't interact with her period. She's crazy and she will do anything to sabotage him. He needs to find someone neutral to pick up his kid or exchange her at a police station with witnesses.

Wow. That's exactly what Diane Downs said! I fear this is going to implode someday. Has Halle Berry been diagnosed officially? There are about a million and a half reports out there that make her sound seriously bipolar and sociopathic. She is a brilliant actress with a very disturbed mind.

And yes none of the judges on this train wreck are falling for her crap and I love it. Go family law judges who believe in parental alienation!

&&&

A Restraining Order usually has a boxed checked that says something like "except for court ordered visitation." I'm sure he's still allowed to visit his kid he just can't be around otherwise. So it shouldn't affect custody at all.

Honestly it's a good idea....the guy needs to stay AWAY from her. I don't feel total sympathy for him. He knows she's crazy, but apparently is still putting himself in situations where she implodes.

Buttercup said...

What does a parent who doesn't have a ton of money do in these situations? Family lawyers, like every other lawyer - cost money. It has to be heartbreaking to have your child alienated from you and not have the money to fight back in court about it. Can someone represent themselves? Ugh. Just a total nightmare thinking about what people have to do.

On the other hand I wish adults would put aside their pettiness and make it about the children first in all situations. There are plenty of people that are able to work together despite not loving each other for the best interest of the kids.

Just taking a quick look on google - Halle Berry hasn't had too much written about her recently that wasn't in some way related to this custody issue. This has to have affected employment opportunities as it's looking like her personal life is not in control.

More like "I have to do something for my fans- lets see....throw this on the table and voila!! Thanksgiving feast!" And if she didnt have her tweeties, she wouldnt do anything at all- there would be no reason to. That's just a guess. Cuz her table was sad.

Just taking a quick look on google - Halle Berry hasn't had too much written about her recently that wasn't in some way related to this custody issue. This has to have affected employment opportunities as it's looking like her personal life is not in control
________________________________________

I had the same thought. Halle's last few movies have been bombs. She may be following the Kate Gosselin road to obscurity with her behavior.

Halle has been shut down by EVERY judge in her quest to shut out the father of her child. This latest stunt is so obvious. I hope the judges in CA are as smart as they seem and see through it.

Momentum in family law court is a fascinating thing. The bandwagon in family law court is a fascinating thing. Somewhere along the way a judge decided, rightly so, Halle Berry is a parental alienating psycho, and ever since then every judge down the line has towed the party line. It is good to see judges getting it right and standing up for fathers who are being alienated, and yet I think how very different this could be, heck she could even be in France by now, if she got a judge like the one Kate is in front of.

The media sometimes only has half the story, but I do know that one of her ploys to cut her children's father off was not only completely shut down by a judge I've been in front of, but also kicked out of his courtroom with a full dismissal. Parental alienating witch. Yea for progressive CA judges!

The following is from my 66 year old friend, who was supposed to come for Thanksgiving dinner, but had to work at Walmart all day stocking shelves and then worked all day Black Friday too. He was originally hired as a part time greeter.

"And another Black Friday is almost history now. Just about the time my faith in humanity has been restored another Black Friday rolls around. I'm not sure I have the words to describe last night when the things went on sale at Walmart. Hours before the things went on sale the people started acting like Steelers Fans after the Browns have given them a good whoopin'. One poor lady came up to me to complain that she had just got slapped in the face over towels. TOWELS for crying out loud! Then I had to tell the customers that we had run out of 40" TVs. That went over
like a fart in an iron lung. Then I was directed to stop customers from filling up their carts with things from my department before those things went on sale. I made them put everything back and had to stand guard. Then about ten minutes before the sale was to start the people really went nuts and started grabbing stuff, shoving us out of the way. I thought last year was bad, but this year was just incredible. It was literally a human feeding frenzy. In a quiet moment afterwards I thought about God looking down from Heaven on the spectacle being played out at not only thousands of Walmart stores, but all the other retailers as well, and I wondered what He thinks about it all. I'm sure my friend Rxxxx in India cannot even fathom such rampant greed being so openly displayed. And I thought how much God must really love us to be so patient with us and how saddened he must be. There we are giving thanks to Him for His immeasurable blessings and then just a few hours later trampling our neighbors so we can get a deal on a flat screen TV! It makes me wonder why He is holding off on His Second Coming and Judgment Day. For surely, as it was in the days of Noah, so it is today."

Pugs and other brachycephalic (flat faced) dogs (and cats, for that matter) are gassy because they tend to swallow a lot of air. The flatter the face, the harder it is for them to breathe through their nose. Unfortunately, the Fancy, and the breeders, are responsible, at least in part. At some point along the line, flatter faces started winning more in the show ring, so the breeders kept on breeding more and more extreme faces. If you saw a picture of one of the original Persian cats, you'd never realize it was a Persian. Sorry, this is an ongoing battle in my breed, with the traditionalists (including me) fighting the more extreme breeders. I'll climb down off my soap box now and make my way quietly to the far corner.

Oh, I LOVED Red Skelton. When his show was on Tuesday nights, I was allowed to stay up a half hour past my usual bedtime to watch it. As an adult, I was able to see him perform in person several times. Large audiences, from gray-haired matrons and gentlemen to small children, and all in stitches. NEVER a dirty word, although there were some double entendres.

I read somewhere that despite Halle's beauty and talent she is a very emotionally needy woman who has to be reassured constantly that she is indeed THE beautiful and talented Halle Berry. Her true colors came out when she was shown screaming like a banshee and cursing at the pap that was filming her taking her child to school. She came across as a vicious, demented shrew, nothing of the demure Halle that she presents as her "brand." It was wrong for the pap to do that, but she played right into their hands giving them exactly what they wanted, which says to me that she is not very intelligent, nor stable. Also in evidence of her lack of wisdom is the fact that she went for beauty, instead of brains when selecting a gene pool for her child. In comparison it has been said that MJ considered only those with a very high IQ. As it turns out, P*ris, in particular, is absolutely stunning, and very insightful beyond her years (I follow her on Twitter, ever since she went public with the fact that her grandmother had been spirited away, and it was the right thing to do as she was immediately brought back when the dirty little secret was exposed). I always wondered why that doctor sought at that time a very young Pr*nce out (instead of security), but when they were seen unveiled for the first time he came across as very self-assured and mature for his age.

On Tori and Dean, I have seen her approach paps outside their gate during school time suggesting they may be inclined to follow. She just stopped and said hey guys we talked about this - don't follow me to school, and we will make it up to you when the time is right (or to that effect). They said OK, Tori, sorry. Also they were parked once right in front visible from the house and Dean went out and said, hey guys, I am going to need for you to park at the bottom of the hill so the kids can't see you. They immediately cranked up and rolled to the bottom of the hill and Dean waved at them and said thanks. Kill them with kindness my mother used to say.

I miss that show. It amazes me that she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and raised by a bevy of nannies with a mother who openly competed with her for her father's affections, yet works her fingers to the bone (pregnant 9/10ths of the time) to provide for her family. Instead of whining about her disinheritance she just rolled her sleeves up and went to work. She found herself to be a good author, and basically, anything else in her mind set. If she comes up with an idea you can be sure that it will come to pass. It will be done well and not centered around her children (not even the reality show); they appear, but are not the focus. From the show she comes across as a hands on working mom who has a great relationship with her kids. The kids are very well spoken and well behaved. I watched all the shows and never once was she shown being disrespectful or dismissive to her children. She has her little quirks but all in all there are many things about her that I respect.

IDModo -- I didn't know that DS originated in Canada! I just always assumed that it was filmed in NYC. I've been to Hamilton a couple of times. Lovely city. I was there for cat shows, so didn't get to see as much of it as I would have liked, but it was very nice and the people were great.

Dutch Tulip -- Is that the video made at the British Dog show? If so, I've seen it, but not recently. MOST breeders are very responsible and make their breeding choices for health first and only then consider show characteristics, but there are always a few who don't. Most of us do very thorough health screenings before we even consider a breeding and, with more and more DNA tests being developed to detect problems, it's easier to do. Sometimes it's a crapshoot, because there are certain problems that don't show up until later in life and by that time, an animal has been used in breeding. When it's a recessive genetic trait, you can never be certain it's been eliminated.

Same here in Holland, there are some typical dutch breeds, small population so some breeders go out of the gene pool and want to cross breed some other ( similar looks etc.} dogs to get the gene pool a little bigger but it's controversial.

LBelle, we must be around the same age. While I grew up an USAF brat and around the world/US, I now live in Canada and love it here. My father met my mother on a USAF base in Canada back in the day and he always liked it, so, after he retired we moved North to the Toronto area. I am a true dual citizen born on a USAF base in Canada and love both countries, with tons of relatives scattered in both.

So except for the exclusively Canadian shows, everything else you said speaks to me. I wanted to work on the Love Boat and my sister to live on Fantasy Island! I loved the Bobbsey Twin books, oh and Judy Blume - Are You There God, It's Me Margaret! Does anyone remember the Scholastic (I think that's what it was) book programs, where you ordered books and they delivered to your school? I can remember my sister and I agonizing over our selections to fit the budget we were given, what could wait, what couldn't!

The US had a similar fitness program and I still have the badges! Our Saturday mornings were cartoons early, then bowling league (might have been a AF base thing, but every base we lived on it seemed the standard) and the best freaking hot dogs for lunch from the steamer, the buns were soooo soft & warm!

One other memory that stands out and funnily enough my mother and I were talking about it last night, were all the Snoopy holiday 'toons. We watched together as a family and I specifically remember Wrapples, a caramel sheet you put over an apple to make a 'caramel' apple. LOL far from perfect, but was a special treat we had during those fall / winter specials.

Old shows? Does anyone remember Friday night scary shows in the '70s? First The Night Stalker with Gavin McLeod, and then Creature Feature with Vincent Price. My sisters and I would bring pillows and blankets into the living room and eat popcorn and watch. When the mummy or vampire or whatever would attack, we'd pull our blankets over our heads and say, "Tell me when it's over!" The one brave sister who would still be watching would tell us when it was okay to watch again, but always would give us the okay before the monster attack was over, and we'd end up seeing it anyway.
The greatest thrill of my childhood was when, during dinner on a family trip to CA, I spotted Vincent Price himself at the restaurant. He noticed my sisters and me staring, and later walked over and said hello to us. My mother said we were on vacation, and he said, "That's a long trip. I hope you're being good girls and you thank your parents for bringing you here." We couldn't speak, just sat there nodding at him like a bunch of bobble-head dolls. This was back in the days when people used to dress up for a plane trip, and dress for dinner. Oh, the good old days.

After I moved from Detroit at age 14, I went to the Cleveland area and attended the same High School that Halle Berry would later attend. She has a terrible reputation in this area. She was an angry, self entitled girl even in HS, she was angry with white students because she was 1/2 black and she was angry with black students because she was 1/2 white. I cannot imagine what she went through as a mixed race girl in a school system that was 50/50 at the time, HS is hard enough on anyone; but apparently she carried quite a chip on her shoulder. KIAT -- Charley Horse! Thank you!

Vincent Price -- What a thoroughly nice man he was. When I was in college he came to our campus with his one man show, "An Evening With Vincent Price". I was a member in good standing of the Masquers, our campus theater club, and he met with us and had a Q&A session the afternoon of the show. We were still going strong at dinner time and he came upstairs (the meeting was in the Campus Center) and ate with us. Here he was, a nationally recognized gourmet cook, and eating dinner in our cafeteria! Couldn't believe it. We discovered a common ancestor, and I got a little note from him after he returned home, adressed "Dear Cousin". Coincidentally, my oldest cousin on that side of the family, moved to California in the early 70's to work for Hughes Aircraft (He is an aerospace engineer). One Sunday morning he was coming out the door of the church he attended, and there was Vincent Price at the bottom of the church steps. My cousin introduced himself to him and told him about the family connection. Of course, Mr. Price didn't remember meeting me, but still it was quite a coincidence. My cousin said he was very gracious and nice there, too, and everyone liked him. He had a wicked sense of humor.

Bingo. Exactly. If you want to have Thanksgiving dinner and eat tv dinners in a garage, fine, it's what makes it YOUR Thanksgiving and not everyone celebrates the same way.

But if you have a table that looks like the one she set, with three pumpkins, some candles and placemats and paper cups, and especially after you have set yourself up like a domestic diva, a Susie Homemaker, you don't post a photo of it. Maybe she thinks it really was something special. She did the same thing with that pathetic Christmas tree last year.

They may be not sure what actually happened. There are memories of the Mommy monster, the trips, filming, the many people now gone from their lives (family & crew), life with Jon, life with Kate, school days and not telling 'secrets' such as abuse, home-life, Kendra, probably much more..being HOMs will also cause a difference in their 'collective' memories. One may contradict what another recalls. The twins may not remember much other than watching and entertaining/ protecting the tups. Very sad. I didn't articulate this well but I'm sure you know what I mean.

That's how you cure Type 2 Halle, but you go ahead and keep telling the story YOUR way. It sounds so much better if you tell people you've cured yourself of an incurable disease.

Now here's something interesting. Wikipedia says Halle Berry's parents divorced when she was four and she has been estranged from her father since childhood. You have to wonder what role her daddy issues played in her just wanting someone to father her child, not actually BE a father. Sad someone with her own daddy issues would work so actively to prevent her child from having something positive with her father.

Halle Berry should just go away and work on her mental health issues. What's sad is that if she doesn't get herself straightened out she is a great talent that will be lost. Whereas with Kate, she should just go away and won't be missed, it's no big loss.

In the Pacific Northwest the great local show was JP Patches. He was a clown that lived at the city dump. His sidekick was a burley man named "Gertrude" that dressed up as a woman! They both did appearances up until recently but the actor Chris Wedes died after a long battle with cancer (I think he was in his early 80's).

We also had a great late night locally produced (Seattle) sketch comedy program called Almost Live. Bill Nye the Science guy got his start on it along with radio guy Pat Cashman who does Taco Time commercials now.

Growing up we had 3 TV channels and maybe PBS if you shook (the rain off) and turned the antennae! We used to close the window with the lead in it to get the reception just right. My brother and I always fought over Monday nights-he wanted to watch Monday Night Football and I wanted to watch Little House on the Prarie and when I got a little older M*A*S*H.

I wonder if there's still celebs out there who would not only take the time to talk to a bunch of little girls, but also encourage them to show respect for their parents. He was one of a kind.
One show I remember watching on Saturdays was The Banana Bunch. A bunch of characters in big, furry costumes who drove around in a car shaped like a banana. Did anyone else watch that one? I seem to recall it being on at about the same time that The Monkees with Davy Jones was on the air.

Some of her instability may be related to Type 1 diabetes. Family member of mine really struggles with moods and feeling stable when their sugar is out of wack. There is nothing wrong with them mentally. They literally can sound like a drunk when their sugar is low. It's all over the internet similar stories from families of diabetics. It's no excuse but it's one explanation.

AuntieAnn said...

Admin I don't think HB has type 1. I think it's either type 2 or hyperglycemia. Anyone with Type 1 needs insulin. She said she weaned herself off. I dont think so.

But I agree... when those blood sugars go up, look out, the temper flares, at least around here.

I have to say, it's so nice that people here can enjoy talking about other aspects of their lives that don't include Kate. Her fans claim everyone is obsessed, but of course they come here and complain when the topic veers away from Kate. I suspect that their drive-bys will become more and more frequent now that Kate has disappeared from the media. No stories, no talk shows, no gossip, no books, no show, nothing. Lately it's as if she doesn't exist, and I dare say that she may, finally, be officially over. She'll do something outrageous from time to time, just to see her name in print again, but otherwise I predict that she will be ignored.
Meanwhile, everyone here can enjoy chatting about books, movies, recipes, childhood memories...it's a true community. This blog has come a long way.

Did anyone see Cesar Milan (dog whisperer) on one of the magazine type shows. He is making about a comeback show after having attempted to take his own life. He went into a deep depression when his beloved dog, Daddy, died and then in that same time frame his wife of 17 years blind-sided him with a divorce. He still looked pale and very sad but he has the show coming up, I think about rescue. It is not going to be the dog whisperer. I had not long ago wondered aloud what had happened to him and that I missed the show. He was so good with the dogs and Daddy was an integral part of that show. I felt very sad for him. He did not look well but maybe the show will help to get back up again. You just never know what can happen in a day.

Pity Party,
Branding is the craze right now- I have 4 books on it, to get an idea of how to 'brand' myself, including in the workplace and on social media. I suck at it, but hey, at least I tried :)
It's just selling yourself, 2.0 style, if you know what I mean. Just hyped up for the next generation and a little pizazz added in- what makes you YOU and not everyone else, your brand.
So I already gave 2 of the books away, LOL, have to help my co-workers out and give them a leg up on branding themselves.
The books did say to not use social media foolishly though, to not put anything out there you would regret, you wouldn't want an employer to see, you would delete the next day, you wouldnt want your parents (or kids) to see, etc, so Kate is obviously got that part of it all wrong. As usual.

As a Disney Fan (not a Sheeple, though) I go to WDW at once a year. I live on the West Coast so its quite a commitment, financially. As an adult why do I love Disney so much? Because its my "go to" place of non-reality. I am fully aware of the downside of Disney (long lines, expense, crowds, etc.). But when I go on property my every day cares just don't matter. Its induldging myself with what I want to do and eat, not what others want me to do.

Yes, some Disney fans can be waaaay over the top. But with everything in life, moderation is the key.

P.S. My husband and I budget for these trips. They are never spur of the moment trip.

I realize that the general consensus here is that KK's emotional
development stopped at around age 12 (not disagreeing), but her
obsession with "FUN' goes beyond that. Life at age 12 is not all FUN.
It's about realizing that you are growing up and some of the unknowns

Bluebird- It was GUMBY, and his horse was POKEY.I'm sure of this because my daughter used to sneak them into the Christmas creche when she was little, right in front of the Wise Men.

When my oldest was about four, he broke one of the shepherds when he and his cousin were racing around the house. They were both afraid to tell me. They replaced the broken piece with the yellow Power Ranger action figure that he had found on the curb outside Toys R Us, and they put the shepherd's staff in its hand. It took me awhile to discover it, and I really couldn't be angry. A Power Ranger in the stable, surrounded by sheep, cows and goats was really funny. Although I did replace the shepherd, the Power Ranger is still there. I'm just glad the angel on the top of the stable wasn't broken, or they might have replaced it with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle!

When I was a kid, we had a set of four ceramic candles. The bottom of each of them was a letter. When set together, they spelled NOEL. We always kept it on top of the organ in our family room. I'd switch the letters around to spell LEON. My mom would change them back to NOEL and pretended to be upset (I knew she wasn't). Those pieces somehow disappeared through the years, and I wish I could find a set again. I still search the flea markets and online auctions, but I haven't been able to locate the same ones.

Does anyone remember the small Gurley choir boy candles? There were also trees, reindeer, santas, angels. My grandmother always had a set of them on her mantel. I still have them - so many memories.

Disneyworld IS expensive, no doubt about it. Here'ss a trick I use to save for a trip. When checking out at the grocery store, the customer receives a receipt showing how much money was saved on the purchase. I take the saved amount and put it in my vacation savings account. I clip coupons, look for sales, anything to save money on groceries. I then forget about the vacation savings (don't look at the balance) until about 5-6 months before I want to leave. However, I deposit money into the account each week. I then take some of the money and buy the airline tickets and one-nights hotel deposit. I also take back recycled bottles/cans and put that money in the vacation account. I pay off as much of the vacation I can before I leave. While at WDW I do not stay at the high end ($400/night) hotels. That's nuts to spend that kind of money.

Other savings tips...go off season, fly the cheapest routes, don't buy the dining plan (can't each that much food).

As Cast Members they got huge discounts. In 2004, we all went with or sons and their family, my sis and her family and his wife's kids and grandkids.

We stayed at the Polynesian, my ex was able to get 5 rooms at near half the cost. Our rooms were on the Seven Seas Lagoon. We had an amazing time.

Ex had to give up working there because in 2010 he had a heart transplant. They still go, but only once or twice a year.
