The reality T.V. relationships curse

The learning curve

Reality T.V. seems to have played a role in many couples in love ending up in divorce court. Seems Tia and Tamera Mowry, child stars who now have their own reality show about married life (Tia & Tamera), have picked up on the obvious: reality T.V. is hard on relationships.

Said Tia: “I can see why marriages deteriorate after being on a reality show for a while. At the end of the day, the reality show is a show, and they’re looking for conflict. For any relationship, always focusing on a conflict is not healthy.”

And Tamera had this to say: “You don’t want to put everything out on television. That’s what makes a marriage. It’s between you two and not you and 2 billion people who can watch it over and over on YouTube.”

Jon and Kate Gosselin are perhaps reality T.V.'s most infamous break-up. Here are just a few of the many other couples who split during or after their reality shows.

Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey. The show may have boosted sales of Chicken of the Sea, but it didn't make being newlyweds seem like much fun. The Newlyweds.

Linda Marie Bollea and Hulk Hogan. They endured 24 years of marital bliss. It wasn't until they signed on for a reality show that they split. Hogan Knows Best.

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries. It's widely been rumored the Kardashians orchestrated this entire relationship just for ratings, but poor Kris actually seemed to be in love with her. Kris is fighting this out in court. Said his attorney, Kim had "no intention of proceeding with this marriage. That it was basically a contrivance for the benefit of her show and to make money." Go Kris! Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Darrel and Juanita Boeschkoetter. We laughed, we cried, we rooted for them to pull through, we prayed for rain when it was dry and sun when it was wet. But the happy ending we desperately wanted wasn't to be. Juanita and Darrel eventually split. The Farmer's Wife.

What wonderful insights from the Mowry sisters. Hopefully, their relationships will survive intact.

Kate has often said that she and Jon would have divorced despite the show. I found an interesting website that had a survey posted: http://www.mostonline.org/facts_divorcesurvey.htm

I won't post the whole article but here were the highlights:

Divorce and the Multiple Birth Family

MOST (Mothers of Supertwins) conducted a survey of parents with multiples (twins, triplets, quadruplets, etc.) from June 25, 2009 to July 27, 2009. The survey was designed to develop baseline statistics about the prevalence of divorce among multiple birth parents and contained 10 multi-part questions on family background, socioeconomic status, parent and children's age, as well as questions about marital status and divorce.

The research team consisted of:

Laurie LaMonde, Ph.D., MOST Research Director
Marcia W. DiStaso, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at Penn State University
Maureen A. Doolan Boyle, MOST Executive Director
Lauretta Shokler, MOST Technology Director
Kelly Ross, MD, MOST Medical Director, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Newborn Medicine Washington University School of Medicine & Pediatric Hospitalist at Missouri Baptist Hospital
All the data is still being analyzed for detailed statistics, but below are some initial findings.

Initial Survey Findings

The survey had a large sample size. A total of 2,849 parents or guardians of multiples completed the MOST Divorce and the Multiple Birth Family survey questionnaire. The majority of survey participants were:

Mothers (97.5%)
Residents of the United States (93.4%)
Predominately Caucasian (92.4%).
An average age of 32 when their multiples were conceived.
Households with an average of 3 children, mostly families of twins (61%) or triplets (30%).
Married for the first time (86%).
Researchers commonly report that the lifetime divorce rate is about 40 to 50% for first marriages in the United States, and although it certainly makes sense that parents of multiples would face additional emotional, financial, and medical-related stressors, this study is the first known research examining the divorce rate among this growing population of parents. The survey found:

That 4.3% of respondents divorced during the pregnancy or following the birth of multiples (indicating that the divorce rate among this group may not be as high as many have speculated.)
Over 95% of the marriages were intact.
About 82% of the respondents reported an overall positive level of marital satisfaction.
According to MOST researcher, Dr. Laurie LaMonde, a clinical psychologist and mother of triplets, “Identifying a more accurate divorce rate is important to ease the concerns of multiple birth families as well as to determine if additional services may be beneficial for families that may be at greater risk of marital discord.”

Specifically, the divorce rate was:

3.6% for parents with twins
5% for parents with triplets
9.2% for parents with quadruplets
4.2% for parents with quintuplets/sextuplets or multiple sets of multiples
Among those who divorced, the majority of their multiples were between the ages of 1 and 5 at the time of divorce.

In addition, 4.8% of respondents reported that their marriage involved a history of physical or substance abuse. Of those reporting abuse, martial dissatisfaction ratings were higher and the likelihood of divorce was greater.

So, while families of sextuplets or more or multiple multiples do divorce, the rate is actually lower than for those with triplets and quads.

Maybe they would have divorced. I tend to think, however, that had she not had the money and the attention from the show she would have stayed with Jon for no other reason than she would have been scared to death to raise 8 kids on her own.

I think the show had a great deal to do with the divorce. With money, fame and a bunch of "yes" people, both j+K thought the fame train and money would keep coming in. Especially Kate, but Jon did a good job of trying to keep his face in the media. I think Kate thought she'd cherry pick any media job she wanted, and book deal she wanted, and show she wanted for many, many years to come.
It isn't a fluke or an outlier. It's a fact that married couples on reality tv have a very high divorce rate, far higher than the average population.
I'd add the Mashes to that list, btw. If reality tv focuses on conflict and creating characters, it really highlighted the fractured relationship between those 2. I do admire Jenny Masche for staying off of tv and going back (did she ever leave?) to being a Physicians Assistant and settling down, re-establishing a family structure and keeping extended family in their lives, despite the fact that watching that train wreck could have destroyed their connections.

DWTS not a spoiler just my opinion. Shawn and Derek are probably going to win. The judges clinched it for them by giving them lower scores last night (although their free style was good - but was it dancing or gymnastics?).

It was an awful lot of gymnastics, although the other women are certainly flexible and athletic. You just can't compare them to an Olympian, so I thought the advantage was there, but maybe it's not for everyone.
I don't think Val and his partner won't win. She strikes me as a cold fish, although she may be a perfectly lovely woman. For an actress, she doesn't come across on camera like say, Kirsty Ally did.
Tony's got a great shot and I think if you take the advantage of being an Olympic Gymnast out of the equation, I think Melissa edges out Shawn in style.

All the couples did a great job, but Kelly leaves me cold and made an obvious error in her first dance last night--was surprised she got a 10 in spite of it.

Not a Derek fan at all, even though he's a great dancer, and like Shawn, but it was pure gymnastics and they deliberately broke the rules.

LOVE Tony and Melissa and am hoping they walk away w/ the trophy.

I went back and googled "kate gosselin's worst moments" and several video short video clips that have been put together were on there...loolking back, it's obvious when they were doing the couch interview at the end of season 4 that Jon wanted OUT and she made it very evident that she "was very happy" with everything. It was right after that that they called it quits. I think since she slipped up in interviews after they split that they had actually split a year before that, it actually occured right fter that couch interview. I think Kate was sooo full of herself and soooo sure that the show would NEVER end that she told Jon to get lost if he wasn't willing to do it her way! when you look back at the short clips, most of them are from the couch interviews and she was HORRIBLE and DEMEANING to him. No man in his right mind would stay and live with that. IT WAS NOT REALITY TV THAT KILLED THAT MARRIAGE - IT WAS KATE AND HOW SHE TREATED JON.!

TLC stinks said... 9

TLC encouraged Kate to mock and insult Jon publicly. The guy had enough, but Kate thought she was the "star" and undoubtedly believed she would move on to bigger and better things. I think the marriage would have survived if not for TLC. If you were an early watcher of the show, Kate was not that bad. I totally got how frustrated she would get when she said she needed more help from Jon. I think TLC noted that moms identified with that sentiment and the producer, Jen, pushed it to the limit.

I think fame got to Kate's head. She really did have more potential than Jon as far as media opportunities at the time. She had K-Mart, some making school lunches project, speaking at women's conferences, Healthtex, not to mention books.
Instead of turning toward each other, they turned away and i'm not sure what it would have taken for that to happen had the money and freebies not been rolling in.
I have a feeling that Jon would have got out from under Kate's rule at some point in his 30's. That parent-child relationship wasn't going to last forever and I believe that seeing it on TV, and having countless thousands witness the abuse every single week really made Jon wake up.

It's funny how TLC pandered to both sexes with this ploy. Moms can relate to having a husband who doesn't help enough with the babies/kids and Dads can relate to the nagging when they know they really do help around the house.
I knew Kate was too big for her britches when TLC started to show her mean-spirited sense of humor, like when she oh-so-coyly flirted with the camera and complained how Jon never helps and she has to do it all by herself, simply because the man stopped taking care of the kids for 5 minutes while Kate threw crap on paper plates for lunch.

Even though Amy became frustrated with Matt a lot of times, I would have also, they work together in rearing the children and making a good life for themselves and their family. I have Amy's cook book. She did a great job with simple recipes, and great photography.

Kate's family and old friends probably don't even recognize her anymore, and I'm not talking just the physical alterations. Just look at what her good friend Jamie said about her on the last episode. "I tell Kate she's not Angelina Jolie, and she gets mad at me!".

I think some of the reality 'stars' were picked obviously for their unique situations: wrestler, celeb twins, HOM, rich, struggling, famous. I think many of them were doomed b/c of that difference from the rest of the population. (May I add that fathers of chronically or terminally ill children often leave the family ,as well, from my own observations as a pediatric nurse.)Also I think that only certain types of people would agree to a TV show photographing their every move- seeking fame, wealth etc ( exception- FW)

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 21

I'm not sure divorce statistics have that much relevance since, statistics or not, it is definitely arguable that many of these couples would not have broken up, or at least not as soon as they did, without the pressure of their show helping it along. Many couples have outright blamed their reality show for their breakup. The Hogans were one of them.

I am in the camp that believes that without the reality show, Kate would have puttered along with Jon for many more years to come. She may not have been the happiest, but she would have stuck it out. I firmly believe that divorce had everything to do with Jon wanting to end the show. Kate saw him standing in the way and had no choice but to cut him off at the knees if she wanted that money train to keep on chugging. She even alludes to her advisers telling her as such. The biggest indicator of that was who filed for divorce--Kate.

I think what happened with the DWTS thing last night is that the poster had been asked several times, from bloggers and a request from admin, to please not post ANYTHING about DWTS because even if it's not an outright spoiler, some people don't want to read anything about it before they've seen the show.

In spite of these requests, not just last night but previously as well, the person still posted. There are some who have faithfully followed DWTS and for them, who have watched each episode and do not want to know about anything that's happened before they see it, it really is annoying.

In this case, moderation tonight may be the only way to go, since there may be some who just can't conceal their excitement or disappointment when the winner is announced.

JudyK -- So sorry to hear about your mother. That's a blow that, no matter how old you are and how prepared you think you are, rocks you to your foundation. Virtual hugs, lots of them, and a prayer for your peace of mind heading your way.

TLC stinks 9 -- I never got how frustrated she'd get with Jon, saying she needed more help. To me, it seemed pretty clear right from the get-go that he did most of the child care and a substantial part of the household maintenance -- the man even ironed! Most women would kill for a husband who put in that much time around the house and in childcare on top of a 40+ hour work week. I think the beginning of the end was when KK badgered Jon into quitting his job. He wound up being a house-husband. There's nothing at all wrong with that, but she continually downgraded his contributions and efforts. She made fun of him because he "needed help" to run the household, yet she was never without help herself, and apparently substantially more help than Jon needed to do the same job. I get it. Caring for 6 babies at once is rough and when it's 24/7 that can be a ball-breaker, but IMO the main reason the marriage imploded was KKs utter lack of respect for Jon. She didn't believe in teamwork, which is what it takes to make a marriage, or any partnership, work. If she couldn't have her way, as she said in that memo to Jon, everyone was going to be miserable.

Reality tv attracts a certain kind of person. Normal people don't do reality tv. I would guess that all the divorces would've happened anyway because of the type of people they are, not because of the tv cameras. The housewives franchise is a perfect example of that. They are narcissistic, immature, spoiled brats. Are their divorces surprising? Not in the least.

And I always thought the few episodes where Amy and Matt's marriage was "in trouble" was for ratings. I didn't buy into that storyline at all.

BTW, jessica Simpson cheated on Nick Lachey. Not sure what reality tv had to do with that. And the farmer's wife seemed pretty predictable that they would divorce, again, not sure what the documentary had to do with that.

Empirical evidence for about 2 decades now shows that most of these couples split.
I think people/couples who do reality tv may have some sort of fracture in the relationship or need within themselves to begin with, and all they need is the pressure of a show and the egging on to begin to unravel.

I agree. It was clear to me not only was Jon working all day but would be with the kids all night. Kate's frustration was real, he wasn't fulfilling all her post it notes. But where her mistake was, was that she didn't recognize or appreciate all that he was doing. She didn't appreciate that time with the babies IS what they need and IS helping. There was so much to be done, far more than one man could possibly do. She wanted miracles out of him while not pulling her own weight.

We never saw Jon relaxed on the couch with a Sports Illustrated and watching T.V. or playing Angry Birds on his phone. Not once. He was running around like crazy, and this after putting in a full day at work.

I think the thing I found frustrating very early on was that Jon was far more hands on with those kids than many fathers. Many kids would be so lucky to have a dad who so lovingly washes their hair making sure to put in conditioner for the girls. Kate didn't get this, appreciate it, or reward it. She just nagged. And having grown up with someone who was a nag, my immediate reaction is a visceral one. In fact a lot of marriage therapists will say that nagging is arguably one of the worst mistakes you can make in a relationship.

I agree. Juanita was going to "outgrow" Daryl sooner or later. She knew she had the smarts to change her life and Daryl seemed quite threatened by that. Just the fact that he lied to Juanita about getting her teeth fixed made me happy to see her get an education so no one else could manipulate her with empty promises.
Juanita took the bull by the horns whereas Daryl was just doing the same damn thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
You can look at recent pics of Juanita and the girls and see how they're thriving.

I think Juanita and Darrel would have split eventually but they are still part of the reality t.v. curse.

There are some post-show articles around that time that give a little insight. They were instant celebrities for a time, and you can see the pressure it put on them. The felt like they had to represent the small farmers of America. They went to Los Angeles and the beach for the first time, gave speeches, it was all very overwhelming. That may have accelerated the breakup. Juanita seemed more open to being the voice of her group and making a difference in that way, Darrel clearly just wanted to have a quiet life and farm.

Admin- I respect your desire to stay out of blog wars.I hope this comment will be ok, but if you decided to delete I understand.

I find it fascinating (and frightening) that there have been so many who have crossed the line from a simple internet argument and taken it into real life.

Early on in this exercise (and before this particular blog began) a few people began searching for the real identities of bloggers/moderators who they didn't agree with. The rationale behind this behavior was never clear to me. I once read a comment where someone said they felt 'safer' knowing the name of a particular person and the city she lived in.

I've long thought about writing a book on this topic but I honestly have no idea where to begin. Between the various blogs and multiple screen names, it's been hard to keep up.

In my personal opinion, it does seem that the Sheeple were the first to take things to a personal level on behalf of Kate. They justify their actions because they are defending an unemployed millionaire.

Kate's a user and a parasite.
She went from her parents house to her first boyfriend's. That lasted a while, then she started looking for an upgrade-Jon fit the bill being a dentist's son.
That was good enough until TLC and Steve punched her ticket on the gravy train.

If the show hadn't come along, I think she would have stayed with Jon until something better came along.
As far as the poster above thinking Kate was not too bad in the early days, I respectfully disagree...her diary shows what a tyrant she was from the very beginning.

Now since TLC has thrown her off the train, she's looking for another one. Steve seems to be the only one that hasn't taken the bait, legally that is.

When Kate started slapping Jon on the face and then turning to the cameras to look for validation that her actions were okay, that did it for me. Here was a man who was a loving father and working his bu** off taking care of them. IMO Jon understood the reality of the situation with caring for a boatload of children. He knew the hard work that went with taking care of them. And he rolled up his sleeves and took on the job. And Kate? Not so much.

The other thing that got me was when Kate turned to the camera and said honestly, I have 9 children to take care of. No you don't. Kate was lucky to have Jon and she threw him out, drove over him with her bus then back up and drove over him again and again.

Reality TV didn't kill this marriage, Kate's greed did.

Admin -- I agree with you and, after I read Robert's book, I've formed a theory. Robert said that the plan, conceived by TLC, was for Jon to file and that he was blindsided when KK filed. If y'all remember, KK said that Jon's actions over the weekend forced her to file. Since there was nothing scandalous or incriminating reported in the scandal rags at that time, I think "Jon's actions" consisted of insisting that they go to marriage counseling and refusing to file as planned. KK was dead set, with TLC's support and encouragement, on ending the marriage. So she went ahead and filed herself. That may not be what happened, but I think it's a plausible theory.

I've always been impressed with the Mowry sisters. They seem to have their priorities straight. Their younger brother, Taj, was a Disney child star, and he's grown up well too, by all reports. I remember hearing an interview with Tim Reed and Jackee Harry toward the end of "Sister, Sister" and they both gave the girls' parents a lot of credit for keeping them on track. They insisted on schoolwork coming first and encouraged outside interests. They didn't allow the girls to become spoiled or to throw their weight around. Both girls went to college and obtained degrees (Pepperdine, IIRC).

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 39

The Mowry sisters also took a break from acting to get a full college education. They both have psychology degrees. Their younger brother who was also a child star on Full House (remember cute little Teddy??) got his advertising degree.

It seems to me a key to helping child actors grow up straight is making sure they still have the opportunity to have normal experiences like school.

She had the temerity to put it out there that Jon was doing God knows what. What actions? Could be anything. Many people assumed the worst. Was he a danger to the kids? Was he committing felonies? Doing something immoral? I don't know. But, that's Kate's MO. Imply and obfuscate. But Kate got a taste of her own medicine when Scott basically said the same thing about her.
"A series of recent events have made it clear to me that Kate Gosselin and her contributions do not align with the authenticity which we set out to build almost a decade ago," CEO Scott Kluth posted on his website Tuesday in an open letter."

So Juanita would have been better off staying married?

I'm confused by this example of a "marriage torn apart" by the evils of reality tv. She was going to college, working outside the home and obviously wanted a life that was not dependent on the farm financially. Her husband wanted a housewife and a farm. Two entirely different viewpoints and the tv show had nothing to do with the family's finances as they weren't paid for the show.

The show didn't kill the marriage. They outgrew each other because they wanted different lifestyles.

So you believe that if it wasn't for the show, they would have remained married?

I'm just saying that there are some insightful articles post-show about what they went through that show how much pressure they were under. I certainly am not going to comment on whether she would be better off staying married to him--that's her business and her decision. Whether you feel reality t.v. has nothing to do with their marriage, the point being their T.V. show did put them under some pressure, there's just no denying that.

He's BEAUTIFUL!) and is very well respected in his home town of Cincinnati. They're very proud of him there and he does all he can to promote the city and to raise awareness for good causes.

Did anyone else get in on the Kindle deals yesterday? I wound up downloading about 25 books, some from new (to me) authors and some old favorites, for around $50. Did I need them? No. But I sure WANTED them, LOL!! If I had unlimited funds, I probably could have found 100 or more to download. As it is, my Kindle is overstuffed now and operating slowly. I need to go in and send some books to archives.

Juanita and Darryl stayed together for a few years after the show. They were not happy during the filming but Juanita and Darryl tried counseling, letting J take over the finances and D picked up some domestic chores, and J went to college for financial reasons but also to fulfill her dream of an education. I think they would have grown apart even further than they had regardless of the show, but J was kind of 'stuck' with no means of taking care of the kids, no help from her own family and D could not have afforded child support. I think once she was more independent she saw the future and could do something about it - although both remarried so who knows.

Jon took a lot of abuse from Kate and I wondered why. I think it was his personality then and his dedication to the kids, perhaps fear they would be abused more if he left- he did most of the childcare and chores. I'm glad they split for his sake and for the kids. The lure of fame and fortune did get to him, but it did not help their marriage- it made it worse.

Readerlady...I met Jessica Simpson once. She is hardly "dumb as a box of rocks". We should all be "dumb" enough to create a $700 million empire.

Elvis Fan said... 50

@readerlady I downloaded the Kindle app to my PC (for Robert's book) I'd love to buy the Kindle Fire HD. If I do buy it, do I have the choice as to where the book is downloaded? Because I'd like to use the Kindle rather than the app.

Elvis Fan said... 51

In defense of readerlady, Jessica really isn't all that bright. I watched her reality show. In one scene, she and a friend are sniffing candles. Jessica says "oh! this is my favorite scent!" Her friend replies, "Jessica, that one is unscented." ...and have we forgotten about the tuna? These are just examples. I don't think Jessica has the brains to create such an empire. Her "people" created that empire.

To answer your question, you always have a choice as to where you want the book to go. I've got my Kindle, my iPad, my husbands Kindle and my PC. When you order you just use the drop down box telling where to deliver the book. What's nice is that I can download to both the Kindle and iPad and read it on either one and they will sinc the furtherst page that I've read.

As far as the poster above thinking Kate was not too bad in the early days, I respectfully disagree...her diary shows what a tyrant she was from the very beginning.
****************************************

Until I read Robert's book, I had no idea how bad she was. The first year the show aired I was hooked because the babies were so cute. It wasn't until she started nagging and bad mouthing Jon on the show that I had enough. I should have known it was much worse behind the cameras. I thought Jon did an excellent job as a parent and contributed much to running the household. As time went on, Kate just appeared to be lazy, not frazzled with eight kids.

ok, Im going to weigh in here re the dwts since I was one of the ones who criticized Joy last week although we were cool afterwards and I did not post anything last night.

I have read the comments that its only a reality show; who cares, why get so worked up about it...etc... I realize that. However, suppose any of you watch a reality show like the bachelor, dwts, survivor, celebrity apprentice. There are spoilers all over the internet about the elimination order The thing that is nice about DWTS is that it is live. Some people do not want to know what the outcome is during the show. 12 hours later, well, come on. Everyone has watched it or knows. But during the show on EST, no, it isnt for lack of a better word, kosher. I do feel badly for Joy but I was surprised after last weeks backlash that she started discussing the show. Which brings me to another question. Supposing Joy had not been one of the regular posters here, had been a drive by, sheeple, whatever. Would the regular posters here who were a little annoyed with me and others, been as forgiving to her? I dont think so.
I wanted to thank the admin. for moderating. It is a shame that it has come to that. I did mention this last week that a lot of us do not watch it live; we tape or DVR it to skip the endless commercials. While waiting, I go to neutral blogs like this one to catch up. I dont even attempt FB because no one can keep quiet there! I figured that everyone would be talking about KK or dog stories which I enjoy. But enough of this. Thanks again for moderating but I think if possible, I may watch it live :)

I live on the east coast, and I was excited about DWTS last night. However, *I* read the requests to not spoil the show for the west-coasters, so I said nothing.

That being said--I don't feel it's right to vilify one poster for her exuberance in wanting to share what happened. Perhaps she didn't see the warnings about not spoiling the show. I too, am happy about Melissa and Tony, and they're getting the perfect scores and doing so well. When something is happening in "real" time, it's hard not to talk about it. I don't blame Joy for letting her enthusiasm show.

But, I also agree with those who are upset about "spoilers". I just find it sad, that people are ready to vilify one poster, because her enthusiasm for a certain couple was posted.

If you don't want to know the results or what happens, skip over the posts. Don't go online at all, because most home pages have the results posted as soon as they happen. I can understand both sides of the equation--but am really saddened by the posts directed at Joy.

I am rooting for Melissa and Tony-not because of Kate-but because I feel that they really gave it their all, and that Tony had a partner who he could teach(unlike Kate). They made it to the finals once, and now they're there again. Team Melissa and Tony!!

The DWTS finale is on tonight from 9pm ET until 11pm ET, which means that on the west coast it will not be over until 2am ET. So I do hope people will refrain from posting results. But I also hope that people will not vilify people who throught their own enthusiasm and excitement accidentally do so.

Elvis Fan -- I see NJGal already answered your question about where you send your book. One of the cool things about Amazon is you can actually give your Kindle a name. Of course, you can just call it "Elvis Fan's Kindle" or Kindle Fire 1 or whatever, but if you want to get creative and come up with an original name for it, you can do that when you register it. As NJGal also pointed out, you can download to multiple devices. I have a Kindle, the Kindle app on my computer, and the Kindle app on my iphone. You can also download to the Cloud system. If you buy a book from a source other than Amazon, you can send the book to your Amazon documents collection and preserve it so if your device crashes (happens occasionally) or you get another device you don't lose the book. For that privilege, they charge a whopping $.15 per MB of data. That usually amounts to several books. I'll be interested to hear how you like your Fire. I want to get one, but I'm waiting for the one with 4G to come down in price a bit. I don't always have a stable WiFi connection at home, so I'd prefer having 4G capability. Also, I agree with you, I think most of Jessica's empire was developed by her "handlers", particularly her father.

Paula said... 61

LOL - the "chicken of the sea" segment was about as real as those segments showing kate Gosselin as a "warm and caring mother". Some of you still don't get that there is nothing "real" about reality tv. Still, I'm not getting into any drama over Jessica Simpson.

Also, Tucker's Mom, Gabriel's avadavit indicates that Oliver jumped and hit him as he was walking back to his car. Also, I am reading that the judge re-instated Gabriel's visition with his daughter. Maybe Halle finally went too far...

Same with Sister Wives. Kody wants his harem all to live in the same cul de sac in four different houses but first they have to have their mortgages approved. One of them has a bad credit rating, which shouldn't matter because TLC has probably paid them millions to act all stressed out at the loans office. They could easily pay cash for all four houses.

Meanwhile they all seem to pretend to wonder what they'll do for a living now that they're in Sin City. They keep whining and complaining about this money dilemma but they must have a something stashed away because Kody is taking wife #1 on a trip to Mexico and none of the other three look as if they're starving to death. And we're supposed to forget about the money they're getting for this show...yeah, ooookay.

I predict at least two of them are going to stick it out with that a-hole until the contract is up and then split. It looks to me like Janelle feels this whole circus is an affront to her morals and Christine is going to throw a tantrum and bow out because she clearly jealous of Robyn.

This would all be funny except there are 18 kids involved whose lives will probaby never be the same again because some of their lazy-ass parents made a deal with the devil when they signed with TLC.

I totally got how frustrated she would get when she said she needed more help from Jon
* * *

I think their marriage would have lasted longer, but would have eventually ended in divorce because Kate is never satisfied. She would have kept her eyes open for someone with more money and prospects than Jon, and treated him as her stepping stone.

Kate might not have been "that bad" when the show first started, but she is and was a deeply flawed human being. I don't see how she could honestly be frustrated with Jon. He was working full time. She was working every other Saturday. She was allegedly the full time homemaker, yet we know she had many volunteers in the home from the start, including a fulltime nurse for the first 12 months of the sextuplets' lives, paid for by taxpayer money. How much help did Kate need??? Why wouldn't a full time nurse and numerous volunteers doing grocery shopping, laundry, and child care not have been more than enough to help Kate out? What more was Jon supposed to do after working a full day, than coming home and "taking over", bathing the kids, putting them to bed, etc.?

If they were both working full time, then perhaps she could have had some complaint. But she wasn't working but two Saturdays a month! Meantime, Jon is working 40 hours a week, commuting, making Kate's coffee before he leaves for work, and then taking over with the kids upon his return. She had a lot of nerve complaining about one darn thing!

Have to pick up kids, run errands and prep for ABA therapy today but wanted to chime in on the DWTS debate:

Here's a really easy way to settle the issue: There can be no DWTS posts until the day after the show. The day of the show, people should refrain from speculation.

That would solve the problem, I think.

Seriously, if you want to speculate and you can't wait to discuss it, then go talk on the DWTS forums. Just wait until the next day to talk about it here. At that point, anything that happened will already be news and "out there", so it's free game to discuss imo.

Hope I haven't offended, that wasn't my intent. Just don't like to see everyone upset over something that imo is really not worth the emotional energy. I like DWTS, it's just not worth getting into a flame war over it. Again, imo.

It was fun to bash BM when she was in her heyday but did her family and children really need to be brought into it? They were. I saw the pictures and the blog.

From what I have heard on the street a few truthers have really crossed the line in their quest to out the sheeple and have paid dearly for it. Sad it got to that point. I hope they have unplugged their computers and moved on.

Comment #1. Joy, we love you here. Or at least I do, and I'm glad you are here with us.
Don't ever change because you bring, well, joy to this blog.

Comment #2. I believe if Kate had not had the money rolling in from TLC that she would have stayed with Jon simply because he brought in a paycheck most of the time. And because he was
willing to deal with 6 kids plus 2 kids doing the icky things parents do. While he nurtured kids, she cleaned kitchen floors and followed the maid around to see what a lousy job she was doing. Whatever would Kate do if she had to work outside the home AND follow the help around AND shampoo her children's hair AND get them dressed in perfectly matching outfits every single day? She needed a Jon and would have welcomed a Jon clone, too.

Question: What do you do when somebody just won't learn? An acquaintance of mine has just run out of gas on the highway for maybe the 18th time. He's got a cash flow problem but that's mostly because he has decided he "can't"
do anything but a clerical job and none is available. He carries a FULL gasoline can in the back of his car for emergencies, and he has plenty of emergencies. To make it worse, his gas can leaks into the car. The man is breathing fresh gas fumes every time he is in his car, which he sits in for extended periods of time as he searches for free wi-fi around town. Sometimes his teen age sons are in the car too.

Talking to him leads to denial that there is a problem, telling him how dangerous this is falls on deaf ears, telling him that he is likely ruining his fuel pump ($$) goes nowhere.
I was driving home from out of town and there he was on the side of the road, no gas.

I know how wrong it is to think I should have driven right on by and let him figure this out on his own. I wonder how many more times he should be rescued and how soon he should discover that God doesn't always provide a passing car driven by someone you know. I'm struggling with this to know the best course of action.

Thanks for listening and letting me vent. It's a pretty safe place here.

Please come back and post, AFTER DWTS is over and with NO spoilers, LOL.

My mom died in 1998, although I really lost her several years before, when her dementia got so bad that she didn't know me. It still hurts sometimes. I'll be doing something we used to do together, or I'll read a book I know she would have loved. Last week I made a pot of vegetable soup and it reminded me of all the times I helped her make it when I was a kid. I learned to make it from her, as she learned it from her mother. There's no recipe, we just threw this and that and something else into the pot. Now I use a slow cooker, and the smell takes me back to my childhood. Hold on to the good memories, JudyK. If you need to, find a grief support group. Cry when you need to and don't feel disloyal if you laugh and smile. It will get easier with time, but it will never leave you completely.

Yes, I have laughed and cried more than I thought was possible. My mother was a very accomplished, respected woman and was beloved by her community. She taught English for more than 32 years at the college, so this is particularly funny to me and makes me laugh every time I think of it.

I'm sure I'm going to be scheduled to work a killer Christmas week as well since I always say I'm fine with whatever days ... this new boss seems to take it to mean all the days.
Good to hear Downton Abby is returning, seems like ages since the last episode.

Judy, when our loved ones depart they leave such a hole don't they.

It sounds like your dear mom had a sense of humor. I like Amazing Grace but always wondered, too, why the person who wrote it labeled himself a wretch. I just went to Wikipedia to find out that "Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life's path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by his recalcitrant insubordination."

Recalcitrant insubordination. Yikes.

I hope you return here more often. You're among friends.

Another reality family that looked like it was heading for trouble was Bethenny Frankel and her poor husband. Perhaps Bethenny feels like she doesn't deserve to be loved so she tries to drive people away. Sounds like K, doesn't it?

There's a pic of her and her little girl in Miami wearing bathing suits. That child's arm looks too thin. Starvation thin. But so does her Mom's.

Judy and Kathryn, my condolences to both. Time really does help.

"I have no idea what happened to KK, but I hope it has something to do with her getting into trouble w/the court for her big fat mouth concerning Jon's electricity and encouraging her insane fan's complaints about Liz and her dog being around the children!!"

----------

That would be a comeuppance, wouldn't it? However, she has never gotten into trouble before with the courts over her subtle and not-so-subtle bashing of Jon, so I doubt that's it, especially if there is no gag order on whatever she says on the internet. It's not illegal for her to make a comment about Jon having to settle with the electric company or stirring up the fans over the pit bull controversy.

"Is is possible to pool money together and get him a AAA membership? He sounds like he's doesn't use the common sense the good Lord gave him, but I'm sure you worry about the kids."

--------

Yes, but make sure that you buy him the AAA PLUS and not the basic. For the PLUS there is no charge for emergency gasoline delivery, but with the basic membership, customer pays. If he's low on cash flow, he's liable not to have the money to pay the AAA guy! :)

Too bad an old favorite like Amazing Grace has been so overused. If there's a funeral scene in a movie or tv, there it is usually with bagpipes. A touching and sad scene just looses it's message when they use it over and over.

Deanna's tweets to Kate are still gone. I can go back to March and from Nov 4 through March all I see are RTs on a variety of topics I guess she's interested in. There are a couple of RTs of Kate - benign stuff, a happy birthday to her kids, etc. All the Jon/custody tweets, mention of the vacation, tweets to the fans -- gone. In the past two days she's replied to a couple of the fans but nothing about Kate.

I won't even speculate as to what it all means. I'm surprised the fans haven't asked her about it though - at least I don't think they have? I rarely look at Twazzup these days.

"As for DWTS spoilers, I agree putting the board on moderation tonight is the best solution for eliminating the stress."

====================

Especially since the sheeple may descend here to post the results, just trying to spoil it for those who have been watching the show from the beginning. They've been known to pull similar stunts, and it wouldn't be out of character for them to try to stir things up here.

Very very interesting about Deanna. She's young, I think sometimes when you get on a roll with things next thing you know you're knee deep in quick sand. After having a few days off she may have paused, reflected, and realized what she was doing. Thus began the process of deleting all her rampages. If so good for her, introspection is a good thing. This is her career here. Or maybe she had a falling out with Kate.

Fleecing The Sheeple said... 110

Seriously, if you want to speculate and you can't wait to discuss it, then go talk on the DWTS forums. Just wait until the next day to talk about it here. At that point, anything that happened will already be news and "out there", so it's free game to discuss imo.

==============

It's been suggested before that when there's a show on television that involves a spoiler, that nobody posts until the next day, regardless of what the content may be. However, I think when some are excited about the outcome, they can't wait to post. The rule is ignored, and so spoilers get posted. You can request until you're blue in the face but if someone is hell bent on posting, there's not much that can be done about it. All the requesting in the world isn't going to solve the problem.

Oh, before I forget. I would like to leave my two cents on reality t.v. killing Jon & Kate's marriage....

IMO, Kate killed her marriage with her greed, her lust for fame & fortune, and her apparent indifference to her husband's wishes to end filming.

Too bad Kate sacrificed her marriage for something she is sorely ill-equipted to accomplish ...

Sad, really.

Fleece is right. The issue is not what rule to impose. I've already imposed a rule that shows like this are not be spoiled for the west coast. Usually when something big is happening I remind people as I did this time. The issue is that rule or request is not always followed.

================

Either scenario is possible, and you're right, she may have had second thoughts about her "middlewoman" role in the Kate-Jon saga. It could be that she stepped back and looked at everything that's going down with the custody issues, her friendship with Kate, the Liz controversy and decided that she was in too deep and she should just cool it about everything. If so, wise move on her part. When in doubt, zip it. It seemed that she was on a high because of her relationship with Kate, and since she was an insider she thought it was her job to set the record straight because she knew the truth. Self-importance, too, may have played a role here. Sheeple looked to her for answers and she was able to provide them...look at me, I know Kate, I know the truth.

I said this before, it would be completely normal and honestly somewhat understandable for a mom to put up a front with her friends, to act as if things are better or different than how they seem. I also wouldn't put it past Kate to misrepresent how things are to Deanna. Deanna is perfect for Kate's friend since she's not even in the same state enough to really know. Deanna's not stupid, she may have figured it out and feel a bit played. It's just in a normal world most of the time when you're putting up that front a friend doesn't take to twitter to spread the message to thousands. That's a wrinkle Kate didn't expect.

I thought the Gosselins had unofficially split
about a year before they announced it. Would the pictures of Ms. Hummell and Jon have come out in that year's time? What about the pictures with the college students at the bar?

I think these things were done after Jon and Kate had already decided to go their separate ways if only secretly. Kate was traveling with Steve with who knows what room arrangements, Jon was in the garage apartment and they both did what worked for them. We have no idea what Kate did or didn't do, but somehow she has been painted as a wholesome person with no
thoughts of an affair. At least Jon was honest about his relationships, as unfortunate as they may have been.

I don't believe any video taken of Jon actually ended the Gosselin marriage. It was already over between them, but was far from public knowledge at the time of Jon's video. They both, Jon and Kate played along to continue to dupe the public and keep the money coming in. TLC was in on the sham, too, as far as I'm concerned. I think Jon had more trouble going along with the lie than Kate did and thus, he got careless with his actions.

With Kris and Kim K., how sad would it be to discover you married someone to boost their reality show ratings and for a money grab? I hope the court compensates Kris H. for his trouble. All of the above is just horrible, really horrible!

Although I don't think Jon was a saint and that he made a lot of mistakes post-separation, I do believe that Kate and perhaps TLC set him up as the fall guy. Kate was then able to act as the wronged party, and do the "boo-hoo" tour as the "wronged" person. The enablers to this day believe that Kate was the poor innocent, wronged by Jon and now wronged by Robert. Poor, poor Katie Irene. What they seem to forget, is that it take TWO to make or break a marriage. Kate is no innocent in this whole debacle.

If I were a man, having my wife gallivanting around the country with a married bodyguard would do it for me.

They were still married (not sure if you'd call it "together" and definitely not happily married) when the pictures surfaced. The Jon and Deanna thing happened in the spring of 2009; the Utah thing was in June of 2009. The marriage was over in the fall of 2008 when they bought the property. Those in the community were really surprised when they bought that house, knowing that the marriage, which had been on the rocks, was ready to implode. The fake wedding renewal ceremony was in August 2008.

If Jon was running around with anyone that jeopardized the marriage it would have been prior to the fall of 2008. I don't recall anything in tabloids or the internet that suggested that he was cheating on Kate.

Well, I don't want this to sound like I'm jumping on the "Missing my late mom" bandwagon, but tomorrow is actually the 4th anniversary of my mom's passing, coming just 5 months after we lost our father to Alzheimer's. My mom missed seeing her "baby triplet daughters" turning 50 only 11 days later. Her death was unexpected.

It does get better with time, but like others mentioned, the "first" of anything after that is the hardest, such as the upcoming 'milestone' birthday. The holidays are hard because she passed away the day after Thanksgiving that year so that holiday has been hard and of course Christmas is hard. Birthdays are hard because my triplet sisters and I were born on our father's birthday so that always made it special too.

But we have such wonderful memories of both of them and I am a believer that I will see them again.

So I can relate to what you all have been sharing within your own families and it is nice to be able to come here and do that.

And now my comments about Tony & Melissa and DWTS. I really, really hope that they win as I voted for them and not because Tony had been with Kate. I agree with another poster who said they've never seen Tony look so happy before.

I am watching our local Los Angeles ABC Channel 7 news right now and their entertainment reporter George Pennacchio is always there interviewing them after the show. Tony said to George last night "This has been THE most amazing ride of my life!!" So whether they lose or win, I think he needed this experience after having gone 14 seasons with many lousy partners, Kate being at the top of that list!

I, too, believe that Jon was set up by Kate and TLC to be the bad guy after the separation became public. At that time, the kids were still little and cute, Kate was still willing to sell them, and TLC still was expecting the big bucks to keep rolling in off of these kids. Therefore, TLC was willing to back Kate to keep their money makers since she was willing and Jon wasn't.

To make Kate look good and the poor victim in all of the mess, they had to make Jon look bad. Was the money they spent worth it? I believe in their eyes it was because they still thought they had a few good years left of filming the kids and getting the ratings. However, they underestimated how totally unlikeable Kate is and that Jon was an integral part of the show, not just Kate. It was all downhill, albeit slowly, but downhill none the less. That's why they cut their losses. Kate, being the narc that she is, just assumed other TV shows would fall into her lap. The reality of today never crossed her mind then.

Bluebird, what a heartbreaking story about your husband. I can't truly understand your loss in that situation because I've never been in it. However, your compassion and pain come through in your post and I wish you peace.

Thanks, Tweetle! Loved all of those PBS programs.

I give up. I cannot catch up with episodes of Pioneer Woman and read this blog at the same time. Hard to choose! Choices, choices, choices. PW will have to wait.

Saying goodnight, but a final thank you to Carolina Peach, Tweet-le De, KateisaTwit, LoveMyGrandsons, and Bluebird. I've enjoyed your sharing your stories of loss with me and others...it's been very comforting.

And I have to add that I just got a big surprise. UPS just delivered a Keurig Special Edition K-Cup Brewer from my daughter, and, unlike Kate, I didn't even turn in a Christmas request!

Goodnight and thanks to all of you for your kind words today.

Hey! What's everyone want kate-esque for Christmas?
I'd like a label maker!!!

I don't have to think long and hard about this one. I want the good bra that is invisible under the bikini top. I don't want it for the inflatable bosom factor, but for the science/technology of it. Making something invisible has allegedly been tried before (Philadelphia Experiment) and I'd like to see how this is possible with a bra.

Tucker's Mom, my mother used vinegar, but as a creme rinse. She used a bar of soap for our shampoo. I hated the smell of vinegar, but after my hair was rinsed properly, the smell was gone. In those days my parents didn't buy shampoo or creme rinse.

LMG, you can relate to me as your grandsons (4 and 6) are the same age as mine, although I have a 5-month, 5 year and 7 year old also. They are all my pride and joy, as are yours. I am very thankful for what I have, regardless.

LoveMyGrandsons said... 171

Judy, what a wonderful surprise gift from your daughter! Obviously your daughter knows you well and knew what would make you happy.

Gee, if only Kate could get that message, she wouldn't have to write lists for outrageous gifts such as vaccuum cleaners.

I just can't imagine the massive amount of crap those kids are sent each Christmas from the crazed sheep. I bet the majority of it gets tossed in the garbage.

The hell? It's November 27. Why is she tearing into the freebies now and not putting them under the tree? What the hell does that teach kids? And how in the world is she STILL getting freebies??

And also I'm sure the boys really care so much about a stupid lip balm and lotion company. Sure they were just THRILLED.

Jane, "Doc Martin" is available on Hulu. Tweet -- my cable system only carries the local (WOSU) PBS station and it doesn't air "Doc Martin". Wish they did carry the national PBS feed. Our local PBS station doesn't carry a lot of the nationally available programming.

Thanks! I did check all the PBS stations on my cable network and Doc Martin isn't airing here. Hulu is a good alternative ;)

Prior to this tweet she tweeted:

I assume she parked in the fire lane at the UPS store to pick up the latest load of freebies from Milo and others as well as online purchases she made. And now she's opening the boxes. Guess Jon has the kids.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 184

This shameless grifting really seems especially insensitive around Hurricane Sandy. Especially from a NYC company.

Why does she need these freebies? We're not talking about food, clothing or shelter where any loyal sheeple could make an arguement she needs. We're talking about LIP BALM. Why? Why? Justify this, please. Why she doesn't tell them please really you needn't do that we are doing quite well thank you, please help a truly needy family--is shameful.

Kate's tweets make me sick. When will she stop and why does this Milo fawning on her so? Why do companies keep sending grifts? I don't understand.

OrangeCrusher1 said... 187

But why would anyone send this woman anything anymore? She has nothing, nothing to offer them in return, she's not connected to any organization for whom this might be considered a favor, nothing like that. My head spins in an effort to understand, and also to try to understand her absolutely shameless grifting and bragging. Guess I'm just hoping for some Xmas Karma to bite her in the a#*.

LoveMyGrandsons said... 188

Admin, Kate would NEVER tell a company to give the freebies to people who really need it. She is so selfish, so self-absorbed, and feels so entitled, she could NEVER think of others less fortunate. It's just not in her nature. She feels entitled to all of the freebies she gets, has no shame in asking for them, and will continue to beg for them as long as she lives.

What an example for her children! Don't ever give to anyone and take all that you can get. That's Kate's motto.

Oops! Kate collected her free crap but nearly forgot to uphold her end of the bargain tweeting the coupon code.

And clearly she doesn't know her sheeple demographic. I doubt any of them are spending seventy-five bucks on moisturizer. Kate come back down there from the 1%, you are clueless.

LoveMyGrandsons said... 190

Okay, Admin, I'm assuning that you put the blog on moderation because of DWTS. This is just my opinion, but that's kind of crazy. After all, it's just a show. I don't watch it since they had Kate on it, so I'm not as interested in it as others may be. However, when we miss football games and find out who the winner is, we still watch the rerun of the game. I would think that the fascination comes with watching the actual dance, not knowing who won or lost.

Just my opinion. I'm ready for the flack that is sure to come!

NJGal51 said... 191

PatK@79 - like you I am one of the rare breed that likes spoilers. I've already been looking for DWTS spoilers for tonight!

Maybe someone in marketing or something like that can answer this. I am not fully convinced this really always makes you that much money. But my understanding is that they will literally send their free crap out to hundreds of celebs hoping for a retweet.

When I was interning at a cable news network the free crap the on screen personalities got was astounding. Just piles and piles of junk hoping for a mention. A lot of books. You'd never have to buy another book again.

OrangeCrusher1 said... 193

Of course who knows if her 'surprises' are free g(r)ifts? The way she words things it's always vague, and meant to make people think she's so popular. And yes, as if the sheeple aka her friends ad supporters are buying expensive Kiehls items. K8 lives in her own pathetic world.

Let's just see if once in this month of greedy taking, just once she tweets about involving her children an an act of charitable giving.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 194

LovemyGrandsons I don't even watch DWTS, but the general consensus about this show and others is no spoilers. Don't worry both myself and one of my helpers are in tonight and poised to approve the comments. This will not be a normal occurrence especially if people can follow the rules.

I personally do not like spoilers myself so I understand it. A few shows a week are sometimes my only chance to relax, unwind with maybe some hot cocoa and some popcorn. I imagine a lot of people feel the same. Perhaps we take TV too seriously, but oh well. A lot of my good memories with people I love involve snuggling up with a good movie or favorite TV show, that's how it goes. I like everything to be a complete surprise. It really is a huge let down to many when you know what will happen. I'm the same with my sports games. I'm often out or busy and have to DVR them and I will go to great lengths to avoid hearing ANYTHING about the game even little things.

I hate how sometimes when the Olympics are delayed because they occur during the middle of the night they will post the results all over the internet before it ever airs in prime time here. LOL drives me crazy!

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 195

There's no way she would bother to take two seconds out of her precious time doing nothing to tweet a so-not-helpful coupon code if she didn't get some freebies to do it.

Anonymous said... 196

Oh my, come on people, you are grown adults! You should be able to remember not to post spoilers about shows. I'm not being bitchy, I'm being incredulous. Myself, I don't care. I don't watch DWTS. It just annoys me that people can't follow rules like little children. Sorry to offend, but some people need to be offended. It's a simple rule. Don't blame Ambien or any other thing. That just makes it worse. Just say, yeah, I f'd up. Won't happen again.

Marie
=============================================

Nope. I blame ambien. I always blame ambien. For everything. I blamed ambien way before it was cool to blame ambien. I blamed ambien before ambien was invented. Ambien fits the bill pefectly. Pharmacology rocks ;) Too late now anyway. I have worked very hard to elevate avoiding blame to an art form. It's great preparation for a late life political career. Besides, it just doesn't work to blame advil. I know. I tried.

Butterfly - Phenergan? Really? Seriously? Oh little one you have much to learn...LOL

In case anyone is interested, and I'm pretty sure no one is, Rocketman is putting up the tree. He's got his Ipod on the bose blaring out...wait for it...wait for it...wait for it...did ya guess? White Christmas? 12 Days of Christmas? No. The 1812 Overture. Only slighty better than the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack he was playing before that. Is there a more depressing movie than Midnight Cowboy? Even "Melancholia" was more uplifting. Just screams Merry F'in' Xmas. No?

THIS is why I blame ambien.

PS - Marie - I'm not offended. Kate's behavior offends me. Other than that I'm fairly hard to offend. After all, I live with Rocketman.

"However, when we miss football games and find out who the winner is, we still watch the rerun of the game"

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

I can't watch reruns if I know who won. My brother-in-law will record a basketball game, wants to know nothing about it until he watches it. In fact, he even gets upset if someone asks him if he watched the game...no spoilers, just a simple question.

If I know the outcome of a game, it's always in my mind the whole time I'm watching, and I can't seem to get interested in it.
