A bad year. For Kate anyway.

Much like last year when Kate made some "worst of" lists, on one of them even being compared to Gadhafi, she's popping up again on 2012 lists.

Time Magazine put her in their "bad year" category opposite Kate Middleton in the good year column, blasting Kate for being fired from Coupon Cabin. Ha.

Jenni 172- If you are trying to help people understand a process, you should use an example that most people can comprehend to bolster your argument; otherwise, you lose credibility.Why should anyone believe something they can't understand?

I believe it's arrogant to expect that everybody will be scientifically minded, and to imply that if they are not, that somehow makes them hopeless in the understanding department. Just my opinion of course.

Jen, with all due respect -- Just consider this blog a room full of chatting people. Some of them are drinking rumspringa! Were you here for the veranda visual?

When you walk into the room, you will recognize some names. You will agree/disagree with some of the opinions. Topics will change from group to group within the room.

Help yourself to some chips, take a sip of the beverage of your choice. Laugh a little. Offer a comment. Relax.

Go stand next to Auntie -- she will charm you! Kiwi is generous with her special rides. Dwindle will put a hat on your head and make you laugh.

Pretty soon you will be a poster that others recognize. It really is a friendly place -- give it a chance.

Maybe Kate is staying with Deanna and her boyfriend? I checked Deanna's Twitter and there's no mention. In fact, she hasn't tweeted to Kate in weeks.

Jen? I understand about the clique-thing. It's hard to visit a friendly blog and feel like you aren't being heard or feel that you've been disparaged. The topic will soon turn, stick around! You mentioned books - I just started Mystic River by Dennis Lehane. It was made into a movie several years ago with Kevin Bacon, Sean Penn, other really fine actors. I'm enjoying it! Over the holiday I read Defending Jacob - excellent book about an 8th grader accused of murder who was diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder. It's a good read, exciting.

You've gotten a lot of good advice, LMG, but one that stood out to me and bears repeating is to ask what the boys may have said or conveyed after their last time with you and their grandfather.
I can really understand your daughter's viewpoint, as an ex-smoker - the smell is overwhelming to me and I don't like going to homes of smokers.
But my sense is the boys may be old enough to have expressed some opinions and your daughter may be reacting to that, in addition to her own opinion and concerns.
Grandpa may be more open to quitting if the news comes from the "mouths of babes."

Jenni said...

However, no one was mean or nasty or insulting.

Can you explain to me why this Auntie Ann is being so rude?

All I did was post a study done. Lots of posters do this.

At the risk of starting this whole thing up again, I just have to ask a question. As I understand it, LMG's daughter is not only concerned about the smell of cigarettes in the house, but about third hand smoke and the effect it will have on the children's health.

If it's true that smoking residue sticks to clothing, hair and skin, then wouldn't LMG's husband be bringing possible carcinogens into the daughter's home on himself, especially if he goes outside to smoke when he is visiting?

There are many smells in peoples homes dependant upon what they do for a living (farm, factory, cat or dog breeders, homes with ferrets or hamsters, etc.) and it also depends on what they cook, like fish or spice usage. Some people have body odors or feet odor issues and some just don't have a clean home. Pets can cause odors in homes, like cat litter boxes not cleaned enough or dogs left unbathed.

The last thing LMG needs is these long drawn out posts on how bad the smoking odor has affected them in their own life experiences...like visiting relatives and how they bring the odor home in their suitcases. LMAO
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That was me. I'm the one who said I didn't care for bringing suitcases home from visits that smelled of smoke. I'm glad it gave you a good laugh. Howevah.... I didn't back then and still don't now, think it was funny for an 18 month old to smell like he had just come home from a night of bar hopping.
I'm not sure why you think discussing smell of cigarette smoke is petty. It stinks. It's a side effect from breathing noxious fumes. It's dangers have nothing in common with the other smells you mentioned. I don't get your comment at all.
LMG asked for advice, I dealt with this exact situation, I chimed in. I knew someone would have a catty and critical response, I knew it. And you didn't disappoint.
More people would probably like to ask this wise, seasoned, educated, savvy and most intelligent group of people with help with personal problems, including myself. But I don't dare. And this is why. Between the criticisim and the "why are we still on this?" set, it makes one almost afraid to post about anything that doesn't involve snarking about Kate's twitter and whatnot.
Kiwi - I'm currently using the iPad 2. I got the new iPad for Christmas from my husband (that will teach him to forget our anniversary) but haven't started using it yet because I want to finish watching the TV shows downloaded on this one first. Will it make a difference? I tried your work around but it doesn't work with Google. It did work with Safari but I don't like it as well as Google. Before any sheeple say anything about my having 2 (count them 2) iPads,I'm giving the iPad 2 to my son along with some iTunes gift cards.
Jen - have you ever read any Ed McBain? He writes the 87th Precient novels and they are among my favorite cop shop novels. If you want to laugh, anything by either Jen Lancaster or Laurie Notaro will fit the bill.
As to the smoke smell, my husband and I recently returned from Las Vegas and left the suitcase in the laundry area so the clothes could go directly into the wash. I used to be a smoker and never noticed the smell until I quit. LMG, I hope that things work out for you.
Lbelle said...
Well....I take it back. I AM going to post a topic.
Just read that the sole survivor of the Sandy Hook Grade 1 class has filed a lawsuit against the State, Town, etc for $100 million dollars!!!
I don't know about anybody else but I'm personally stunned that this family would have the audacity, 2 freaking weeks after this horrific massacre of 20 babies, to go looking for cash! They should be on their knees, every single day, that they did NOT have to bury their child. What is this world coming to??? I'm totally gobsmacked by their unbelievable greediness.
I DO think many, if not all, the surviving children should have funding set up to help them deal with all they went through. I'm positive they're going to need it but go after the State for 100 million $$ on behalf of this one incredibly lucky child is something else. They claim authorities should have known this could happen and taken steps to avoid it!!!
LoveMyGrandsons said...
Lbelle, I hadn't heard that about the lawsuit, but it is reprehensible. He broke in through a window, no one let him in. Why is it that when something tragic happens, there are some who think that suing is the answer? There may be times when it is justified, but I just do not think this is one of them. If it was my daughter who survived a horrible incident like this, suing anyone would not be on mind. I would be thanking the Lord that she was spared.
I think to us objectively a lawsuit sounds so callous at this stage but to a desperate grieving family trying to find some way some how to make it better often a lawsuit is the only thing left to do that they can think of. They will realize later it isn't making it any better. I don't fault people for trying to find ways to make them feel better.
Jen, Based on the list of authors you've already read, I'd recommend Marcia Muller. She's similar to Grafton, but better. Her Sharon McCone series was, and is, a groundbreaker in the female "hard boiled" detective genre, along with Grafton and Sarah Paretsky. It's a long series -- approaching 30 books now. Some are better than others, but all are good. If you have a Kindle, the early books in the series have just recently been released in Kindle form. Most of the books are also available as audio books. Deborah Crombie is another excellent author. She's an American, but writes about 2 Scotland Yard detectives, Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James. They're procedurals but have aspects of the cozy. If you liked Cornwell, try Kathy Reichs or Beverly Connor. Dana Cameron is another excellent author. If you like cozy mysteries, Hazel Holt is very good. She writes about a small English village and features a widow of a certain age who is an author and who gets involved in solving mysteries. Lisa Lutz has a very humorous and off-beat series that you might enjoy. Very funny.
For the person up-thread who wondered why "we" allowed the blog to be "derailed" by LMG's problem. Most of us responded to her because we saw that she was in pain and needed support and help. We've come to know and love her by her posts. We have smiled, chuckled or outright laughed at some of the word pictures she paints of her grandsons and recognize the profound love she has for them. That's not "clique" that's caring. The very thing we get down on KK for NOT doing.
Who spotted KK in NYC? Where? When? If she's currently on twitter silence, I agree that she doesn't have the kids and it is entirely possible that she is away from home. I certainly hope the kids are having a fun and loving and drama-free celebration with their dad.
Remona -- KK hasn't physically assassinated Jon, but she certainly assassinates his character every chance she gets.
Auntie Ann was accused of being rude. I didn't see anything she said that was rude in any way shape or form. She asked if the person who posted the link understood it (I certainly didn't). Usually when someone posts a link to offer evidence of a point, that person at least has read it and has an understanding of it, especially if it's a study, and is able to answer any questions that may arise. Not too many members outside the scientific community would be able to decipher any of what was contained in that study. It may be a valid study; however, who but chemists would know that?
Here's to good rumspringing tonight, and may all your bed shits be free of twists, tangles, socks and hogs.
LoveMyGrandsons said...
readerlady, thank you; that was such a sweet thing to say. Hogs to you, hon.
Admin, I respectfully disagree. Why is it that if someone is hurting they feel entitled to file a lawsuit because something bad happened to them? I, for one, thing there are too many frivolous lawsuits filed that wastes the time of the courts, as well as taxpayers money. I understand that the family is still dealing with all of the emotions from that horrendous day, but that doesn't mean that they are entitled to millions of dollars because someone broke through a window in the school and went on a shooting spree. I am so surprised that a lawsuit like this was filed. I would have never expected it.
Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...
Oh Jen, I should mention a wonderful resource for you. Actually, for any of you bookaholics who like mysteries. There's a great website, www.stopyourekillingme.com . They list many many authors by name, as well as characters. They list the authors books in publication date order and link to Amazon. Among the classifications listed on their website, you can search for books by interest or jobs or geographical location. For example, if you want to read mysteries featuring dogs, or cats, or clergy members or teachers or . . . Well, you get the picture. One of the classifications they have is "if you liked this author, try that one". They also put out two free eletters a month, on the first -- discussing new authors/series/etc. and awards news, and the fifteenth, listing forthcoming books in a variety of categories, including hardback, paperback, audio, etc. It's a very useful site.
From what I read, the little girl played dead under the bodies of her classmates, and finally ran out of the school covered from head to toe with blood/matter. As Admin said, ''Oh gosh poor kid. For all we know she's waking up screaming every night horrified and desperate parents just want to do something. Anything.''
If the parents approached the attorney last week, while the funerals were still going on, that suggests to me that the little girl must be dealing with a lot of trauma. I wouldn't take the path of a 100 million lawsuit, but I just can't force myself to think of them as scumbags.
NJGal -- I really like Ed McBain and the 87th Precinct books. I met him about 15 years ago at a book signing in Columbus, and he was really nice. I was the only person there at the time, so we chatted (about books, of course) for about 15 minutes and he signed a number of books for me. Last year, Amazon released almost the entire backlist of the 87th Precinct books for $.99. Some of them had been out of print for years, and I ordered all of them. There were so many my bank called me about the number of charges. I explained what was going on and the lady who called me just laughed and said she'd done the same thing a couple of times. If you like audio books, audiobookstand.com is slowly, but surely releasing them all on CD. The price is pretty reasonable - around $15 each for unabridged. I haven't bought any yet, but have borrowed a couple from the library. The reader is excellent.
Hogs and rumspringas all around. Thanks for keeping me entertained while I wait for round two of Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow. We're supposed to get up to 4" tonight. That's on top of the over 9" we got on Wednesday. Have I said lately how much I hate snow?
That was me. I'm the one who said I didn't care for bringing suitcases home from visits that smelled of smoke. I'm glad it gave you a good laugh. Howevah.... I didn't back then and still don't now, think it was funny for an 18 month old to smell like he had just come home from a night of bar hopping.
I'm not sure why you think discussing smell of cigarette smoke is petty. It stinks. It's a side effect from breathing noxious fumes. It's dangers have nothing in common with the other smells you mentioned. I don't get your comment at all.
LMG asked for advice, I dealt with this exact situation, I chimed in. I knew someone would have a catty and critical response, I knew it. And you didn't disappoint.
_______________________________
Your post does, in a certain way, show how you could make those comments to your parents...about not coming for visits in their home due to the cigarette smoke. That's something I could never do to a family member. To me, risking damaged relationships with loved ones is not a wise move to make. You are visiting them, not moving in.
You also, in error, misquoted me. I didn't state the smoking odor discussion on this blog was petty. I made a different point in reference to the word petty.
It's okay to have a difference of opinion on a blog. But when one is misunderstood, it needs clarification. So again, throughout all of my posts, I focused on smoking ODORS and on the importance of not damaging family relationships. These are visits people are discussing, not move-ins with the smoking family members.
My problem with this lawsuit, or any other like it, is the BLAME issue. In order to claim they are due any compensation they will have to say there was fault.
Sounds like it was an upperclass school with adequate and extra security measures. The principal and teachers were certainly brave heroes.
It was a horrible tragedy. But, I have never read that the school or the town or the state were at fault.
I guess we will find out if this does get to court.
To #142 = And it's all about respecting and loving our family and friends and not judging them. Again, I believe it is mean and nitpicky to chose not to visit someone because of this issue at hand. We are in charge of our OWN domains/homes and what goes on there is up to us...but we don't have the right to tell others what to do in their homes. As far as chosing not to visit a loved one because of their smoking habits...well to each their own, but it is not something I would ever do to another person. It is a visit...you are not moving in long term.
And no, I was not comparing health risks by mentioning spice usuage or any of the other odor factors listed in my prior post, but was instead solely discussing odors in homes....period. Seemed clear to me.
I dont visit my mother because she smokes inside the house- it's disgusting and I had to grow up with it. Now I dont have to put up with it.
who has 25 years free of smoking on Jan 19? Pants on Fire? CONGRATS!!! I work with a 41 year old man at work who just wnet through a quadruple bypass - yes, 41 years old, and the first thing he did was quit smoking- doctors orders. Obviously that wasnt the main reason for his heart condition, but the doctors said given his new weakened condition and recovery, his body wouldnt tolerate the smoking. What's more important? Your habit or your life? You make the choice.
LMG, I hope you work this out, I love reading your posts and I know how much you love your GS's (obviously!!) and even though we havent met, I want nothing but peace for you and your family :D
Yes, this is true Fleecing The Sheeple. But don't link ANY studies done to prove it.
========================
Auntie Ann was accused of being rude. I didn't see anything she said that was rude in any way shape or form. She asked if the person who posted the link understood it (I certainly didn't). Usually when someone posts a link to offer evidence of a point, that person at least has read it and has an understanding of it, especially if it's a study, and is able to answer any questions that may arise.
=====
Fleecing, thanks for the support. I kind of think I've been blessed with Dwindle's troll/stalker. A troll was irritated with me the other day which resulted in my being knighted by Admin, lol, and this poster sounds like the same drive-by again last night and today. I don't think it's worth arguing with them, but I do agree fully with what you've said. And I don't know how to remedy this except to laugh it off and gulp down a swig of Rumspringa with you. Bottoms up.
Seems I was mistaken about WHICH child's parent are suing. Turns out it is NOT the sole survivor of the Grade 1 class who pretended to be dead. Another topic: movies!
I saw The Hobbit and thought it was fantastic, had to be the best movie of.the year. Then I saw Les Miserables and thought this has got to be the best movie and Hugh Jackman has got to.be the best actor.
Then tonight we saw Lincoln, finally!,.and I am completely blown away. Daniel Day-Lewis.IS Lincoln, the attention to detail, Sally Field and Daniel Day-Lewis together, knowing it was filmed where it happened, or close to it made it so much more meaningful to us. Even Robert E. Lee's horse, Traveler, is accurately portrayed by a gray horse. Any student of the Civil War knows Lee's horses name and what it looked like, his horse was his constant companion. Thru the film we kept saying ”there is the capitol! There is Petersburg! There is Maymont!” And so on and so on.
What movies have others seen recently? Any recommendations?
For books, light mystery in a different historical setting describes the Darling Dahlias mystery series by Susan Wittig Albert. The Darling Dahlias are a garden club in a very small town during the Depression. She has written The Darling Dahlias and the Cucumber Tree, and the Naked Ladies, and the Confederate Rose. All short, entertaining, and filled with quirky small town characters and little true to life historical details.
It's beyond heartbreaking about the first-grade Sandy Hook survivor. Poor, poor girl. I am glad that she made it and pray that in time, she is able to heal emotionally and live a normal, happy life.
The parents, while feeling blessed to still have their child with them, are probably very worried about her and what she is going through and will continue to go through as a result of what she witnessed. I can't imagine what they are enduring right now.
That said, I'm not sure on what grounds they are suing the state. Nobody except the shooter himself (can't speak for his family) did anything wrong. That type of tragedy, sadly, can happen anywhere, in any state, city, town, etc. It just happened to be Connecticut. That particular elementary school clearly cared a great deal about the children's safety, as they had just implemented a new security system before the shooting.
My warmest thoughts and prayers are with the survivor and her family. And I am in no position to judge their decision. It's just that so many parents have lost so much.... and they are the ones who are seeking money. It just can't be the answer, it can't be.
May they find peace again someday.
Regarding New Year's traditions. In my Polish family, it was always a tradition to have herring(with sour cream and onions) served on crackers on New Year's Eve for good luck. I still follow that till this day. Pork and sauerkraut is another tradition for New Year's. It is one of my favorite meals, and although my daughter cooked roast duck for Christmas dinner(my other favorite meal), I was thrilled that her friends who came to dinner also brought a pork crown roast. I was in food heaven--duck and pork, my two favorite meats!
I hope everyone had a great Christmas, and I hope 2013 will bring good things to everyone on this blog.
I do have to admit--although I missed reading everyone's posts while I was away, I really didn't miss reading anything about Kate. From just reading here, I see nothing has changed. She still throws Jon under the bus, she still has creepy fans, and she still has NO JOB!
I saw the tweet from a fan who was at her gate, and if that doesn't send a wake up call to Kate, I don't know what will.
Thanks to everyone here who make this blog not only about Kate, but also a place to discuss what's on our minds and other interests.
I do hope to see Les Miz--I saw Hugh Jackman perform a number from "The Boy From Oz" at the Tony awards, and he blew me away. I saw previews of Les Miz, and Anne Hathaway astounded me. What really amazed me was that they actually sang live in that movie--no pre-recording and lip-syncing like most movies, they sang real time while being filmed.
On the subject of mystery novels--I've never seen this mentioned, and I may be in the minority, but I have always loved Mary Higgins Clark.
Sorry, for the longish post--it's good to be back.
FYI said...
On just one other note-I had hoped that we would have an update from Robert re the book, but it looks like nothing is happening.
I do hope Robert and his family enjoyed the Holidays and that they will have a Happy New Year. I still admire his guts to put his reputation on the line to get Kate's story out there. That is one of the reasons, I believe everything that is in his book.
I wish him and his family well.
This is probably a little late, but chiming in about dealing with home odors and allergens.
Sometimes people with allergies may not show symptoms right away, but the after effects can be debilitating.
The smoke/second hand smoke discussion might involve after effects that are not seen during the visit. Awkward, yes. And so glad they are trying to have that conversation.
As things are being sort out, one thing to keep up for discussion are ways to meet in the middle. How do you celebrate all that is good and minimize the after effects?
Best of luck sorting it all out.
Online, written communication is difficult. Determining intent is at best a crap-shoot. Blogs, forums, and live chat are just not for everyone. If you tend to be sensitive, feelings easily hurt, feel left out in personal experiences and online, it may be you with the issue, not the others. IMO this blog does a great job welcoming newcomers. Blogs this large, with the volume of comments and the number of different posters contributing to any given topic makes it virtually impossible for every comment to be replied to. Gosh, it would be overwhelming if every post received a comment from every reader.
To feel less awkward if you're new, I suggest posting when you agree with topics, get others used to seeing your name attached to comments and ease into differing opinions. As a newbie (new commenter), being contrary and complaining about others will never engender warm replies from others.
When I dropped the url into Google images, all that came back were posts from this blog, perhaps because I grabbed the url from Blogger. I think some of what people are seeing here is the fact that there may be some who are on the blog in "real time" whose time frame for blogging may be the same. Others like myself come on very early in the morning, and early in the evening, and thereby kind of group everything I have read into one comment (short and sometimes long) without singling any one person out very often. I read and enjoy each and every one of them though(mostly). I do gloss over the travelers who wander over with smoke and mirrors trying to frame KT in a good light by casting a bad light on Jon as I consider that a waste of time. I gave up on her a long time ago and there is nothing, absolutely nothing that could be said or done to change that. At any rate, I am glad that we have the opportunity to go off topic as quite frankly, KT is putting out very little in the way of new material these days. It seems as though she has all her eggs in one basket - that being another show, as do her fans, and I wish her luck with that honestly, I really do.
I think part of it too is understanding just because you didn't get a response doesn't mean posts are not appreciated. I myself have spent most of the week out of town and have been able to check in to read once in awhile but certainly not comment much. It is unrealistic and frankly unfair to expect everyone to respond to every comment when people often have lives. If you post enough and say something worthwhile you will get responses eventually. Be patient.
Ironically Jenni the one complaining about cliques got upwards of 10-15 responses if I recall correctly. There were a lot. Even when she was upset and attacking people folks still chimed in to try to help her with books. That's not my definition of a clique.
This is a prime example of the rudeness often on display here. Say something "worthwhile?" Really? So someone who doesn't get a response is not "worthy" of one?
Of course not every post is going to get a response, but to tell people "hang on, eventually you'll say something that we deem worthy of a comment" is beyond rude.
Funny about your comment njay...i always thought *you* were one of the regulars.
Lots of times I make a comment with no acknowledgement...no problem...it's just not what the blog as a whole is talking about right then. There is kind a core group who seem to mostly interact with each other sometimes, but that's how it works in large groups of people. It's not meant to be an offense to me personally. They're not excluding me, they're just into their own conversation right then. No biggie.
Look how many people come out the woodwork when there is something important being talked about...like the smoking issue.
Personally, I read every comment that isn't by anonymous. Well, sometimes I skim if it's not a topic of interest or if there's a rash of stupidity, like the drive-by's that won't drop a topic.
If everyone commented on every other comment....whew! Too much to read, boring.
I don't know the answer to how to make everyone feel like they are part of 'in' crowd. Probably because everybody can't be by definition.
And I don't have the need to be. I just like being able to be here and make the occasional comment.
Like I said, I thought YOU were one of the regulars. :-):-):-)
That is all. Carry on.
YES anonymous, Say something worthwhile. I.e. don't attack people, don't pick a fight, don't chime in just to whine about cliques. Actually contribute to the flow.
Your comment actually is why you can't get past whatever clique you see. You're jumping all over me finding offensive comments when there were none and not even respecting me enough to follow the rules and pick a name. That will never work for you here.
Good morning everyone!
For what it's worth, I always truly enjoy reading everyone's posts, whether you are new here or have been here for years.
Your thoughts deserve to be heard. Please don't give up posting.
I lurked on this blog for a long time and was always hesitant to post; I was worried I wouldn't have anything original to contribute. And maybe the first several times, my posts didn't get responses. And to this day, they still don't all get responses. But many of them do, and I have grown to love this blog even more.
Please don't take it personally, sometimes posts just happen to go unseen or a new topic comes up. Keep sharing your great ideas and know that you are contributing something, and you are appreciated.
Wishing everyone a wonderful day.
I didn't MIS-understand anything. "Worthwhile" was a horrible choice of words. Imagine if Kate had said to someone begging for a response on Twitter, "Keep tweeting, and eventually you might tweet something worthwhile and get a response." You all would be jumping all over her ass (and rightly so) and you know it.
Oh for crying out loud Picka Name. You're as rude as they come. Follow the rules and people will respond okay? Don't take everything to darn personally and people will respond okay? This group has been overwhelmingly patient and welcoming to ad hominem attacks like yours and frankly at this point it's undeserved.
It's obvious some people will forever pick apart things said or done here. Just like with the drive-by troublemakers - they're just not worth the time or energy to respond to or try to help them feel differently. They seem to have no genuine desire to be welcomed here and I think after they've disrailed the flow of topic after topic, over and over again, I suggest we just ignore.
Re: cliques. Yes, there is a core group here with inside jokes etc. Some may correspond off- board, idk. But I find just ask, comment, address someone and you will be welcomed. There are no boundaries other than the rules Admin has set up, common courtesy and a sense of fun, curiosity and compassion. At least that's what I find here. Some of my comments go unanswered, that's ok. When I had an insurance problem (still do!) and an insomnia issue, I got many replies. Same with books,pets,TV shows, other OT. Also Kate comments. So there is a wide scope of topics discussed here and a great group of gals and a couple of guys, all ages.It's fun to come here !
Re: the smoking issue. My son has asthma, which is mostly controlled by medicine, but there are occasional flare-ups.
The worst for him was after a 2 day visit to my husband's parents. They didn't smoke in the house when we were there, but just the residual smoke was enough to set my son off on a terrible asthma episode, lasting 2-3 days. Scary for all of us.
It didn't happen until he'd been home for 1-2 days, and we didn't go there that often, so it took several years before I realized the connection. I now feel like the worst mom because I obviously didn't protect him enough. If I had realized, we would never have exposed him like that.
I am firmly convinced that his asthma now as an adult is worse because of this exposure, and I feel horrible about it.
We'd come home, and all of our clothes and bags would have to be washed from the smell. It would even make me start coughing just from handling the laundry.
LMG, as hard as it is, you must do your best to never expose those much loved grandsons to a known danger. Just like you wouldn't let them play with mercury, or play in the street.
I so wish I could have a do-over on this for my son. It's one of the biggest regrets of my life. We didn't know then what we know now about the dangers of smoking on the innocent by-standers. But to think that I am responsible for weakening his heart is very hard to live with. If I had known, visits would have been limited to the summer when we could be outside.
I know it's hard not to see the grandkids at your home, but because you love them, you must do this hard thing.
Wishing you well as you come to terms with what must be.
Well one sure fire way to never break into a clique is to accuse envy one of being in a clique. That doesn't make anyone feel like they want to include you.
Maybe they are already not being included has caused the accusation of being a clique. I have seen it on this on this blog for a few years now. Different time, different names (people). Reading here has made me laugh, angry, shake my head and made me cry. Posting here has made me laugh, angry, shake my head and make me cry. The one thing I have never felt is welcome to be a part. Just like the days of my school years. The only difference is In school, they snickered at my size and looks. Deny it if you want, it deflects from fixing it. This comes from my pain that I felt back then and sometimes now, only anonymity makes it easier to be more verbally cruel. I can't see the eye rolls or the snickers but really, that is less painful.
************************************************
I'm sorry to read that you never felt welcomed here, njay. I'm not trying to invalidate your feelings, but I never got the impression that you were unwelcomed.
It's difficult to address each and every comment on a popular blog- and by the time you catch up on a discussion, the conversation goes in another direction.
P.S. You're safe here. Let go of your childhood ghosts- their taunts cannot hurt you anymore,
and the bad memories they bring are useless to you.
May you have a wonderful New Year, njay.
Sending a big hug your way.
New Year's Eve. Baked ham, Black-eyed peas, collards and/or some other 'greens', turnips, garden peas, corn, cornbread, butter, sweet potatoes, hot chow chow, sweet iced tea. Black walnut cake, pound cake and pecan pie for dessert. The black eyed peas are for good luck and pennies for the new year.
I just want to jump in here. I don't see where there is a clique here. There are some people that post more than others but that doesn't make a clique. I have posted many times and not got a response but that is my fault. I am sometimes a little slow on the uptake and by the time I post the conversation has moved on to something else. No big deal. I just need to learn to join in sooner.
I really enjoy this blog and the posters on it. I hope anyone having a problem will just give it some time. Maybe you are like me and just a bit slow on the uptake. I am sure that this post is now behind too. LOL But that's okay too.
 If you post enough and say something worthwhile
Worthwhile = not complaining/whining about the blog, the in crowd, other posters, admin. Ad nauseum.
Whoever mentioned this upstream...I think it's true that what appears to be an in crowd is often just a bunch of people posting during the same time frame on a regular basis.
I like Working Woman, who appears to be new. Look how she just jumped in, with 'worthwhile' comments, and was readily accepted as a regular. Notice she didn't first spend weeks whining that she wasn't being included.
I've never understood why people who have a problem with a blog or some of it's posters, feel the need to attack the blog, the posters, and the blog's Admin. If you don't like it, go elsewhere.
Admin has always said that if you have a problem with something in particular, to email her about it. I've done it--I'm sure others have done so too.
There are a lot of people who post here. It's to be expected that some people will not agree with others. BUT, there is a difference between respectfully disagreeing and outright rude and snotty remarks.
I enjoy this blog. I like reading the various opinions, but if someone posts an opinion I don't agree with--I don't attack that person. I either politely explain why I disagree, or just let it drop.
I don't find anything "cliqueish" about this blog. Sometimes I've received responses to my comments-other times I don't. I comment on what interests me at the moment. I wouldn't even attempt to reply to everyone's posts, and I don't expect everyone to reply to mine.
For those who are complaining about not having their comments responded to--would you go back and respond to each and every comment of the 950 posts on this thread alone? That's what you are asking the posters here to do.
I like this blog and the interaction about different subject matter this blog entails. I don't expect a reply to any comment I make--if I get one, great. If not, no big deal.
Posting comments on a blog is not like having a one on one conversation, like a telephone call. It's just a way to respectively express your opinion.
Kate is a twit exactly. I don't see those complaining about cliques taking the time to respond to a bunch of posts yet you want whatever clique you see to do the same. It's a double standard. But that makes a good point if you respond to other posts you're much more likely to get some engagement if that is your purpose here. When I see my name I try really hard to squeeze in a response. I try. They took the effort to say something directly to me.
Good morning, Dmasy. Yes, I noticed the Jen and Jenni but assumed they were and the same person. Apparently, Adm did, also...see her comment #133 above, so I'm still confused. I hope if Jen is not Jenni, she will clarify for us.
Admin-another thing..I've been away from this blog for over 5 days. There may have been some posts during that period that I would have liked to respond to, but they were posted several days ago. I sometimes wonder if I should bring them up now, or just skip commenting on them. I usually choose to not to comment, because although I may reference the comment, it seems like old news by now, and it's just gets more confusing.
I think a lot really depends on how many people are here at one time. If, for instance, there are 20 people online, reading this blog, and you make a comment, your chances of getting a response may be greater, than if you are commenting when no one is around. If there is a conversation going on, and you enter that conversation, your chances of getting a response are greater, than if you start talking about something that was mentioned 2 days ago. Do you understand what I mean?
I tend to respond to the current comments--not to comments posted over 2 pages ago. I think that's what a lot of people do.
So, as you said, keep commenting and joining the current discussion.
By the way, still looking forward to the list of Kate's worst moments of 2012. Can we expect it soon?
This is so random, but I am watching the movie Mrs. Doubtfire and am tearing up at the speech Robin Williams makes at the end to the judge about how much he loves and needs his kids in his life.
Of course, I can't help but think of Kate, and how she seems to underestimate the role of a father in his children's life. If anyone had known who she was back then and/or if she had any acting talent, she should have played Sally Field's parental-alienating ex-wife character LOL.
Seriously, I love that scene because it portrays a father who truly loves his kids so deeply and who had suffered from his ex wife's inexplicable desire to alienate him from the children.
Of course, Sally Field comes around in the end. Maybe Kate will too...
Though I have only made a couple of comments on this blog, I hope I am not out of line sharing something very helpful to me as we approach a new year. It is a framework in my journal for ongoing improvements in my life and helps me face a new year with hope as I positively review where I am, where I want to be, and the steps I plan to take to accomplish those things in the five elements of my being: Spiritually, Socially, Emotionally, Physically, and Intellectually. I added Professional, Financial, and Material elements as an aside. (I have used this framework with classes I taught—undergrad and grad.)
For example, under the “Spiritual” aspect I made plans to read a chapter from my Bible each day, pray for loved ones, etc. “Socially,” I made plans to contact friends by writing more letters, getting together for lunch, etc. “Physically,” keep a food journal and plan meals AHEAD, etc. You get the idea.
I also get a calendar for the new year and post all family and friend birthdays—then go to the store and get the cards for each one—and clip them on my calendar all stamped, addressed, and ready to go, adding my personal note and signature just before I mail them.
After all the years of using this approach, I have been blessed with reviewing the accomplishments at the end of a year—from getting a number of degrees including my PhD to having bi-monthly luncheons with high school and college girlfriends to realizing an ongoing optimal healthy weight and meal planning, etc.
I would add that I tried to suggest to the former Mrs. Gosselin that she could do what I did—maybe she would not be having a “Bad year…” As the daughter of a medical doctor, I too went to a two year nursing program. But, knowing I wanted to make my own way in life and not depend on my father’s wealth, I set a plan to gain my own education and profession and went on to get a BS then my Master’s in the area—only to get my PhD in another area. But, either way—she could do what I did. While I only have one son and one daughter, she could accomplish a lot with the help she has and time she has when her kids are at school. Either way—what is that saying? Failing to plan is planning to fail?
Sorry if this is too long! May you all have a happy, healthy, and blessed new year, too!
Anybody's cat besides mine have an affinity for plastic? It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen.... I can't leave Zip-lock bags, bubble-wrap or packaged items on the counter, for fear it'll wind up in my kitty's mouth. He doesn't actually eat it, but he leaves teeth marks. Lots and lots of 'em! Other than that fixation, he's a wonderful companion. Sweet and loving, he follows me around the house like...well, like a puppy! :)
Exactly. And also, the movie shows that the kind of husband a person was has NOTHING to do with the kind of father they are (except, of course, in instances where the husband is abusive to anyone). Seriously, Robin William's character is possibly to childish and eccentric as a husband, but is a wonderful father to his kids.
Same with Jon. I actually always feel like he was a good husband to Kate, but the point is he was no longer the husband that she wanted. But she should learn that has nothing to do with the kind of father he is or how much he and the children love each other.
California Suzy ~ Great tips you've got there, and the street cred to back you up! I'd also add that we all benefit from allowing ourselves the gift of time to just breathe... Doing (accomplishing) things is important to a well rounded life, as is Being. No expectations...just the joy and acceptance that comes of being still, being centered, BEING in the moment.
Maybe Kate's discovering that in her yoga practice. We'll never know for sure, but I wish that for her...for all of us, in fact.
Lots of people have sort of goofy, laid back, fun dads who will never be the " mean one". That may frustrate the other parent but WW said it so well you have to separate it. No matter what you may think that's the kids father and they love him. Kate's ship has sailed in terms of having a say in Jon. That should have happened in therapy when they were married. Now her only option is to just be supportive of her children's love for him. End of story. She divorced him, she gave up the right to try to change him.
Moreover the "looser" parent is sometimes a healthy balance kids need and they can sometimes remind the more by the book one to stop and smell the roses.
NJay, There are regular posters and some posters like me who read regularly but post occasionally. The regulars have gotten used to each other and banter back and forth on a topic. Personally, I welcome the "conversation". These people are smart, witty, and concerned for each other. As an occasional poster sometimes my comments receive a comment back and other times, no comment. I don't expect a comment back and do not feel excluded in the blog. I make my point and that's good enough for me.
What I have also enjoyed are that the posters pull from their own personal and working experiences to contribute to a topic. Its the breath of knowledge that I appreciate it. Points of view that I had never considered or knew about are discussed.
The most recent topic (smoking vs non-smoking) is a good example of people contributing to provide advice, drawing on their own experiences, to help another blogger. As a non-smoker who has an elderly mother who is a heavy smoker, I am dealing with the problem from a medical standpoint. The points I could contribute to the conversation have already been brought up by others. So, I feel no reason to post. Though I did reah each and every post about the subject. That brings me to another by-product of this blog. While the advice was directed towards one person others that read (like me) also gained information.
I'm rambling a bit here. I guess what I'm saying is there may be a perceived clique just because there are so many regular posters. But all who read this blog gain knowledge on various topics.
HOGs - oh it is snowing AGAIN
-----------------------
HOGS and bed shits! It is here, too...fast and furious. Oops. I gave another weather report. Apologies to the trolls who complained that the weather was boring, they don't care, etc. etc. etc.
I've been reading the comments about cliques (or "clicks") as a Twitter sheeple calls them. I've never felt not welcomed here. If you post with respect, even if you vehemently disagree with what someone has posted, you treat them as you would like to be treated. Rudeness gets you nowhere. I think that someone who is new here may not realize that comments don't always get a response, and therefore, they jump in with accusations that since they are "outsiders" their opinion isn't welcome. When they do that, it's counter-productive and they just set themselves up as being passive-aggressive and of course, that kind of attitude isn't going to generate a warm, fuzzy feeling among other posters.
There are times when I have to bite my tongue and not go off on troll sheeple here, but I've found that arguing with them isn't going to get one anywhere because s##t-stirring is what they do best. Why give them what they want?
Then again, there are other times when you just want to tell them where to go with their snotty attitude and accusations, and you'll meet them outside.
California Suzy,
I truly admire your aspirations for the upcoming year, you seem to be very well-rounded and goal-directed. :) You prove that it is possible to be introspective, determine where you are vs where you wish to be, and pursue continuous happiness by making an effort! Good things come to people who have values like yours.
I wish you luck and all of the health, happiness, and blessings in the world this upcoming year Cali Suzy.
Off-topic - has anyone had a Mrs. Prindable's apple? I was given one for Xmas and, on this snowy day, I'm slowly devouring it. Devour is the appropriate word LOL. I recommend this if you need a gift (they come beautifully wrapped) or just want to indulge:
***************************
Oh Mrs. Prindable's are out of this world! My mother always bought boxes of them from QVC and everyone that came to her open house received one. So delicious.
A lady at my church received a box of them by accident (QVC delivered) so she called QVC and told her to keep them! So she brought them to church for the kids. They went crazy over them.
Right on, Parent. It's like a public swimming pool. Jump in, but if you poop in the pool right off the bat, you're probably not going to be very popular.
Anybody's cat besides mine have an affinity for plastic? It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen.... I can't leave Zip-lock bags, bubble-wrap or packaged items on the counter, for fear it'll wind up in my kitty's mouth. He doesn't actually eat it, but he leaves teeth marks.
------------------------
I have one who eats paper. Paper anything. Computer paper. Magazines. Book pages. I have to be careful where I leave anything, because she's eaten important letters and chewed up some legal documents. I heard a scratching in the middle of the night, got up, and she was starting to work on the cover of an old family Bible. It's like having a two-year-old in the house and I have to put those things out of reach and out of sight.
I also have a cat who chews on the corner of my laptop when I'm propped up in bed. When I tell her, "NO!" she tries to slam the laptop shut.
But, you gotta love them!
I just googled Mrs. Pindable's apples. I thought Rocky Mtn. Chocolate Factory made amazing apples, but Mrs. P's are a work of art. I think I will just have to order 2. Thanks, ladies. Another blog tip that I will most likely love.
Lots of snow today in upstate NY and lots of leftover ham so it was a good day to make potato ham corn cheddar chowder with corn muffins yummmmmm! Looks like Twit doesn't have the 8 cuz we all know her pattern is a twit feast when she DOES have them...I suppose that's a good thing though because as long as her fingers are constantly ticking away on her phone then she is too busy to pull hair or beat kids with a wooden spoon!!
Yes, that's it, exactly. My kitty chewed through a presentation portfolio, which meant I had to do a mad dash to Staples before meeting with my client. It was riddled with teeth marks, cover and back!
Incredibly frustrating and inconvenient at times, but we love 'em just the same. :)
