Catfish: The movie

Nev is in love. With a woman he has never met. At least not in real life. The 24-year-old New Yorker's sweet, sincere online romance with Megan, a musician from Michigan, is the most important thing that ever happened to him in his young life. So important, he starts making a documentary about it. His friendships with her talented younger sister Abby, and her beautiful mother Angela, are equally deep and fulfilling. But when the curtain is drawn back, Nev and his filmmaker friend and brother are in for something so shocking, Nev wants to quit making his film.

Catfish is a fascinating psychological study of people so desperate to escape their sad reality they will toy with modern technology, and other people's emotions, to do it. Who are they? Why do they do it? How do they do it? And are they to be pitied, or vilified? How similar is Angela's fantasy life to Kate's fantasy life on Twitter? A must see film. (Check out the trailer here.)

Catfish is available in a variety of forms. It airs on MTV early Sunday Dec. 2 at midnight, as well as at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Check local listenings. It is also available on Netflix and streaming on Amazon for $1.99. In addition, 20/20's story on the film, which includes Angela's only interview (also a must see), is available for free on ABCgo.

Hopefully since it's airing on regular cable TV this weekend everyone will get a chance to see it. If not you can rent it for 1.99. Or watch the 20/20 episode, it pretty much goes through the entire film in chronological order. (Don't watch 20/20 if you want the film spoiled.)

I urge you to watch it. You won't regret it. Join the discussion.

Don't watch 20/20 if you DON'T want the film spoiled lol....you get the idea.

Admin, "Catfish" is one of my favorite Documentaries... of all time. I have encouraged others here to watch it, several times.

I've been following the new spin-off MTV series (although it's not as "touching" as the Doc- thus far).

One of my dear friends, Alekz and I met online back in 1995. It was on a Depeche Mode Fan website- how silly! He lived in T.J., Mexico at the time. We have spent holidays at my father's old place in Baja over the years, and remain close today. This was never a romance, but a genuine connection. My husband's jealous streak, is very much in check.

Nev started filming before he 'met' Megan. It was the paintings and that friendship that started this wierd relationship.

Much contrvrsy about it being fake but I don't think so. Nev is very credible, IMO.

I just tuned in, so i missed 30mins of it. It does not air again at 1:30 here in CDT.

I watched the first Catfish episode last week and It wasn't all that bad. The guy's name was Matt and even though he is obese, he looks like a good guy and is working on his weight loss. Can't remember her name but I'm glad they are going to give it a try.

Glad it's not on TLC.

Anonymous said... 6

He also has a series about people in similar online situations on MTV. It's called "Catfish: The Series". Interesting.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 7

Actually yes he basically filmed everything, he is a filmmaker and filmed lots of things--I should probably say he started making a movie about it. He knew he was making a movie about it pretty soon into it.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 8

Actually that is what I said, he started making a doc about it.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 9

Kristine I've seen it three times. I will try to watch it a fourth with ya'll but I think I remember most of it to be able to discuss it.

Starz22 said... 10

I saw this awhile ago...I thought it was very boring...a message to send, but easily gotten by looking up Fake people begging for attention via the internet. Where its easy to play someone you ARE not. Very easy to hide behind a computer screen or name.
I havent watched the series on mtv...and really don't want to.

Do need to give a WOOT out to my Badgers who are going to the Rose Bowl again...3rd time in a row! Hope we win it this time )

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 11

Boring, really? I thought it was anything BUT boring. But I am fascinated with why people do what they do, as well as new technologies and what avenues it's opened up. Their motivations, etc., are interesting to me.

I was riveted all three times. I guess you can see this happen to others around the net but I don't think anyone has ever actually really delved into this before on film in such a deep way by really taking us along on the entire convoluted journey and getting to the bottom of everything.

Anonymous said... 12

Starzz always shows up around midnight to stir things up and be contrary. If you don't like it Starz here's a funny idea don't watch it! But don't spoil everyone else's fun. Some of us do like it and do want to watch it and enjoy it so butt out. BTW thanks for spoiling the game we were out and were watching it on dvr and are only on the third quarter. thanks a million.

Kristine said... 13

Penny- parts of the film, may have been re-created for 'fill-in' and interest purposes. Although, it seems pretty legit. I wondered, more than I can ever explain here tonight.

I will tell Admin & Co. again... My favorite part of the Documentary-- are the revealing texts, with Nev in the Motel room. No spoilers here! Too good... Giggled til' I nearly peed.

Admin. I enjoyed your post, about your mother and Grandfather's trip to NYC. I visualized his poor feet, bleeding after that night was over, and thought about my own Grandpa. What a man.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 14

I would think Angela would be the first to say it's not real. She was made a fool of--but her own doing. Nev has always denied it was fake and I personally also found the whole thing credible.

It's very hard to pull off a fake documentary. Remember Joaquin Phoenix's whole thing where he grew a beard and acted weird? I forgot the name of the movie but I knew it was fake five minutes into it. He later admitted it was a hoax. Dumb.

I'm with you. Anything but boring. I watched two of the tv episodes and was really fascinated with the psychological aspect of it all, particularly the reactions from the persons involved. This documentary is really holding my interest...I'm actually watching it (as opposed to channel surfing while it's on)! There's a commercial now! :)

Kristine said... 18

It's called "I'm Still Here".

Joaquin and his married BIL, Casey Affleck definitely did a lot of drugs & dial-up hookers in the film. Was that part real? Or all for publicity sake? Who knows? Kate-itis maybe. Where's Joaquin now? Burried under that lice infested beard no doubt... what a mess!

Are you talking about the tighty whiteys?

Anonymous said... 21

Awe...man...and here I had my fork ready. I read the title and thought you were going to talk about catfish, the fish. Shows how much television I watch. Not a lot.

Anyway, I still think that most people are good at heart even online I think *most* people are entertainng, have good opinions and exchanges. At least here anyway.

After reading what I read so far, the only catfish I see here is Kate. She's "catefish-ed" people into believing she's broke, always in need of money, basically wht I see her fans have fallen for her pity me type deal. Which you know, I think it's rotten. She's not hurting for money.

Sure she's probably lonely, but guess what? It's her own fault. You end up that way when you aren't nice to people. I'm not too much into the deepness of you know split personality or whatever type thing but I do think Kate's been the type to bait people...so it's kind of ilke fishing...or, phishing. Her sob stories on interviews and all that.

When you treat people the same as you would off screen I think it goes a long way. I really do.

Like Kate accepting gifts from fans to give to her kids. I don't like it.

I happen to at least hope, because Kat seems so worried that she won't be able to meet the material wants of her kids this Christmas, I hope she at some points learns she's sort of "phished" herself into thinking it's necessary. It's not.

I was at a Christmas-type function this afternoon but my mind was elsewhere. Now I don't know this little boy personally but through friends of friends. He has cancer of some type. This little boy is going to spend his Christmas in a hospital, about the same age as Kate's own kids. I sort of doubt on his list he has iPods and such listed.

If Kate says she donates to you know, Toys for Tots, which if she does, hey I think it's great but. But I kind of get the feeling it's an after thought type thing. No 8 year old needs an iPod--I don't tink so and I'm from this connected 24-7 generation and all that. I'm a fan of actual books, classical music and simple joys. Not the next shiny catchy toy.

For Christmas I am happy Kate's kids might get what they want materially, I suppose, but what I am going to be happy for is that little boy I thought of who is going to be able to spend his Christmas with his parents, in a hospital, together.

So catfish aside, I hope Kate-fish will maybe remember OTHER people besiders herself and her kids this Christmas.

My thoughts are with a woman who is going to sit and knit hats for babies who are born addicted, her husband who gives most of his money to charities, their dog who is old and has seizures, the little boy in the hospital that he have a good Christmas, the woman I know who had a stroke recently and struggles with speech therapy and is thrilled that someone will give her rides so she can still be social, and for people who may not be able to be as fortunate as Kate this Christmas.

Those people unforunate could even be posting here, I wouldn't know, none of us would maybe they even just read here. That my thoughts aren't with what I am going to get for the holidays or all the shiny tinsle and lights. Too bad that's all Kate spoke about last Christmas was her stupid need of Christmas lights for the tree and her hoping she can fulfill her kids lists. Christmas, to me is about knowing at least I believe people are good at heart.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 23

Actually another point about the cat-fishing Kate has done.

You don't have to catfish someone into thinking you are much better and put together than you really are, like Angela did. You can catfish them the opposite way--that you are struggling, so very tired, a child support check away from losing everything, you do it all on your own--when really you are a multi-milionaire. It's the same thing if not worse because people tend to give you money and free crap when they think you are struggling.

Also I love using catfish as a verb.

Anonymous said... 24

The name for the movie came from Angela's husband, who said they used to put catfish in the tank with cod fish to keep them active and alive during long trips across the ocean. Although he didn't directly call his wife a catfish, he said the world would be a boring place without people "nipping on your fins."
I lived for a year in Ishpeming, MI in 1990. Back then, it was a dreary, depressing place. I doubt that Angela was ever diagnosed, as she states, with schizophrenia, but I can believe she was depressed and found an escape of sorts in her fantasy life. I am not excusing her deception, as I do believe Nev's story that he fell in love with Megan. I am just saying parts of it are understandable...the movie goes into detail about her life and the dreariness of it.

I do hope that Angela is being truthful about getting psychological help. Having lived in Ispeming, MI, I am not sure how stellar that help would be, though. (It's in the Upper Peninsula of MI. There IS a teaching hospital in Marquette, but as a rule, rural areas don't attract the best and brightest. It's a problem. And the closest major metropolitan areas are HOURS away.)

My SIL's sister fell for unknown reasons a few weeks ago. 3 brain bleeds. They removed part of her skull to allow for swelling. She's got a breathing tube, feeding tube, and assored other tubes. She opens her eyes sometimes, but doesn't know anything.

My SIL's Christmas wish? That her sister wake up and recognize her, the daughter, and the grandchildren. So sad.

My SIL was feeling bad that with the crisis there was no time to put up Christmas lights, which the sister had always loved. So yesterday my other brothers and I converged on their house, with tons of lights we'd bought and a cherry-picker. They're the best lit house in the neighborhood now! All the trees and the house are wrapped.
We even did the huge pine tree. Took us 3 hours to string 10,000 lights, but so worth it to see their faces when they turned into their driveway! We were sitting in lawn chairs in the front yard, waiting for them to come home, the house and yard all lit up.

Yeah, it was a good deed, but the pleasure was ours.

Can't see Kate ever master-minding something like that, can you? Or getting pleasure from it.

Not to mention the fact that she was the daily caregiver for not one, but two severely disabled children who were not her own.

The one thing that wasn't addressed was if her husband knew that she was sending sexually suggestive messages to Nev. If he knew the extent of this hoax, how did he deal with it? I was also surprised that they welcomed him into their home the way that they did. He was a stranger. They didn't know if he was a serial killer, a pedophile, or anything about him. Yet, he ate with them, rode in the car with Angela, and sat in their home with them right from the minute of his arrival. They must have been very trusting people.

Oooooooo Pat as soon as I woke up this fine morn, I shrieked with delight too at the thought of Kate's race! I also whispered to myself "Best. Race. Ever!"

I'm calling it right now- Kate is going to decide mid-race to run the entire marathon! I just know it. She's not going to run just the 1/2 when she can easily fake the whole at this particular race.

Going to comment on Catfish on 20/20. Had never heard of it until yesterday. Just watched it.

She must be very smart and cunning to have kept up with this for so long. Not just the fake identity and life but the friends and family she created, too. Just picturing a big story board like they have in the detective tv shows with the strings all connecting each person. Seems like she had too much to keep up with in her life to try keep up with another entire personality and lifeline. How exhausting and time consumsing that must have been to keep all the stories straight. Struck me as very odd how calm she was when he knocked on her door - with friends and cameras in tow. By giving too many details, was she was inviting a 'showdown'? Perhaps she was just tired of keeping up with it. Very, very odd. Hard to see where the documentary making ended and the movie making magic began. And I don't believe for a minute she isn't doing it again right now. It's like an addiction to her. She was getting way to much positive reforcement to stop. Even being caught, she was just too, too calm about the whole thing.

But I do have a few shout outs;

Ampersmom, glad your poochie is feeling better. Those old dogs sure know how to keep us on our toes.

Dwindle, hope your crochet elbow won't ruin any Christmas plans, I know I am always last minute crafting. I'm going to try using a snow shovel/rototiller combo to finish off a baby blanket! Wish me luck.

Kristine, glad to see your're back! ;)

I wish I could watch Catfish, it has always seemed interesting. I looked on my video on demand and it isn't listed (not on MTV either). Any Canadians have a link for me?

My experience with people not being truthful on the internet is a bit of a story - so scroll on if you find me boring! ;)

When I first got married to the Bear, we were trying to have a baby and not having any luck. so I joined a TTC (trying to conceive) board and became friends with a big group of women. Some of us are still Facebook friends and one woman I really connected with. There were lots of problems with the board. Some problems were with trolls posting horrible lies (about conceiving and then losing a baby and such) and the blogs admin was outed as a Scientologist and was trying to coerce us into her beliefs. So the core group of us left and started our own private forum. It was really crazy there for awhile and very upsetting. Now I find it funny and am glad I 'met' these women. It has been really fun watching their babies grow up. Out of our core group, only two of us did not conceive - myself and another lady.
The internet is a scary place (snark) and I'm glad to have a skeptical side that helps me from getting sucked in.

Didn't a fan (Ms. Miami Heat?) or another sheeple already gift them with iPads? What the kids want is iPods, not iPads. Big difference. Sheeple are likely to send the wrong thing, and Kate would have to sell iPads on ebay or try to return them to a store for credit or iPods!

I wonder if these guys paid attention at all to that case and if so if they noticed the similarities to the web of people Casey Anthony created..coworkers, nanny, nanny's family, elaborate stories about them, fake emails..chilling.

Not that big of a difference when iPods are 299-399. You can get an iPad 2 or 3 almost for that. But yes a lot of people are mixing them up.

Sorry I didn't make that clear. I wasn't commenting on the price being different, but rather that the kids want iPods, not iPads, which are different products.

*************

iPods are $200; iPads are $400. That's a two hundred dollar difference. At $200 difference per child, it would add up to $1,600 total. I think your wallet might feel that difference! :)

I watched Catfish when it was first mentioned here. I have it set to record this afternoon so I can re-fresh my memory on details. I was completely smitten during the first viewing. I then read up on the drama of its authenticity. I chose to believe it was very real.

Of course, I then patted myself on the back for my common sense and the firm belief that I could NOT be suckered in or fooled by such an elaborate facade.

Now, I know I am completely wrong about that certainly. I have become so fond of many posters here. I believe their circumstances (as recorded). I have become Facebook friends with one of the regulars and am charmed by her humor and her commitment to her family.

If were to learn that I have been fooled, defrauded, tricked by someone on this blog -- basically had all my emotions played with -- I would be surprised and sad.

We are trusting and caring people. That makes us a "target" for an unfortunate and unbalanced soul who needs excitement and drama.

I think I will accept the remote chance that someone is not real as presented and embrace the enjoyment of getting to know so many wonderful women I would never had the opportunity to meet except for this blog.

LMG does have 2 cute grandbabies. Kiwi does have a faux leather recliner. Auntie Ann should be a stand up comedian, Berks and Lancaster do know where to buy real Rumspringa, Admin is an attorney, Dwindle does have a SIL in Afganastan, Bear does work with animals, we do have some published authors posting here and there is a real Santa Claus!! Please, don't try to convince me otherwise.

I didn't get my first CD player (yeah, I feel old) until I was about 12 or 13.

Why do kids that young really need iPods? I mean what could you, at that age be listening to that's so important? They're in what, second grade? These are the same kids who love to sing the ABC Angel song in the car?

I guess I don't get it. I mean I see first graders with cell phones these days, kids younger and younger with facebook pages.

That I am sure those of you who have already raised children or are older, didn't you manage to live without all this technology? You know, actually reading books for book reports, the encyclopedia, not wikipedia? Things like that today make even ME feel ld fashioned and I'm not even my mid-20s yet. But that's what I grew up with.

I see fewer kids at the library these days, when I do they're glued to the computers. Maybe instead of buying her kids iPods, Kate, you think it wouldn't hurt to buy your kids a library card?

So...Kate, you have money to still do your hobby or running in different places but you're worried about the budget of Christmas? Man I so can't figure you out. You're all for tucky tucks, supposed breast implants, the shoes, the being on television and keeping supposed "traditions" alive but you can't spare maybe a moment to teach your kids that Christmas isn't solely about what they will and won't get just because you deam it's expensive all the sudden?

You're somehow, seriously, I think the worst budget-keeper I've ever heard of if this is the case. Don't most parents or I'm sorry, more inteligent people do Christmas shopping thruoghout the year anyway? You look for sales (ahem--Mrs. I'm the Coupon lady)? And you call yourself organized.

I just had a flash of Milo sitting at her kitchen table, eyes on the clock watching every single minute go by, saying, "only six hours and fifteen minutes to go..."

LoveMyGrandsons said... 75

Marie, I so agree with you. Most people that I know do some gift shopping during the year. I know I did, and got the rest of it done last week. Also, Kate needs to teach her kids that Christmas is more than just handing in your list of wants. Unfortunately, some of them may grow up with Kate's skewed values.

As far as the library, I took my boys to our local library in the summer and they loved it. There is a whole floor just for children with games for them to play, and all the books they could ask for. We read a couple there, but we checked out 6 books that really interested them. They had so much fun with the science experiment book. We did a few together with Papa.

I don't know for sure that Kate doesn't take her kids to the library, but I get the impression that it would be too much trouble for her. Imagine the fun they would have with reading books together with mommy, or watching a DVD that has NOTHING to do with their old show, or doing fun, easy experiments together. What a learning adventure it could be for them. Besides, it's free so it wouldn't cost Kate a dime. That's right up her alley.

Marie,

Enjoyed reading your thoughts! Why should Kate's kids want to read?? Their mother doesn't! She doesn't read (fifty shades is not 'reading', imo), she doesn't vote, she doesn't work.

All she models for her kids is fun fun fun, all the time! It's all about running shoes, marathons, reality tv, fake everything, twitter, iphones, shopping, etc.

Hopefully they get some real parenting from Jon.

Admin 78 - Ah, but you forget. It's $199 x 6! So it's $1200 for each sextuplets to receive an iPod.

I won't say it's unusual for an 8 or 9 year old to ask for one. My 9 year old would dearly love her own iPod touch. As we tell her, it's good to want things. Then we remind her that she gets allowance and if she wants to save up for one we can do that . That's what her big brother did when he was in 8th grade.

It's not that we couldn't buy her one. It's more that buying it themselves gives them a sense of accomplishment, teaches them goal setting and delayed gratification and helps them to be more responsible for what they buy.

We watched as their older sister (my stepdaughter) was given iPods by her mom or maternal grandma and she'd lose them or have them stolen at school or she'd break them and they'd just buy her another one.

She was also the kid who thought she was an adult when she was 14 which wasn't helped by mom treating her like a best friend (because mom has her own issues with narcissism and bipolar and had difficulty maintains female friendships) rather than a parent. High school was a struggle for her dad and I in many ways as we tried parenting our blended family because of this.

Well, long story short, she moved out at 18 and it was an eye opener. She did a lot of growing up and had to learn lessons the hard way. She's back in school and is trying to make better choices. She also realizes that being an adult is not all it's cracked up to be, that with the freedom comes a lot of personal responsibility.

She's going to be fine, I always knew she was a late bloomer, so to speak. She's a good kid and I have in her. But I think one of the reasons I still follow the Gosselin saga is that I see many similarities in Kate and my husband's ex. I see the effect it's had and has on my older (step)kids and I just wish the Gosselin children will be spared that.

Great story, Silimom; thank you for sharing. We went through a something similar with our daughter when she was in college and found out she was pregnant. We never paid everything for her in high school. She paid her own car insurance, bought and paid for her cell phone and the monthly bill (although I cosigned for her), etc.

Then when she got pregnant in college, she dropped out and we helped because she lived with us. However after our first grandson was born, she didn't want to go back to school, got what she thought was a good paying job, and went on with life. The hubs and I both wanted her back in school so we dropped what she considered a "bomb". We were going to start charging her room and board (only $30 a week for the first 3 months and then $50 a week after she got her 90 day raise). She thought this was so unfair and we told her: where else are you going to get a roof over your head, utilities, food, and free care for your baby for under $200 a month?

Well, between our rule and the hours the job was demanding of her, she was beat adn stressed. We told her this is what the real world would be like for her without a good education to fall back on. We also told her that the same deal still goes just like when she graduated HS: as long as she is in school, there is no room and board and will definitely help with our grandson.

Well, she finally came around, went back to school, got back together with the baby's father (my terrific SIL), and everything worked out. She is now a licensed nurse and her, my SIL, and my precious boys have a wonderful future ahead of them.

Sometimes, our children just don't understand until we, as parents, make the hard decisions to stop supporting them when they are capable of doing it themselves. Some thought we were being too tough on her because she was only 19, however, we thought otherwise. If she was adult enough to become a parent, she needs to be adult enough to make the tough decisions to provide for that baby. It's all good now, but I wonder if it would have turned out this way if didn't push her.

Sorry for my long post. Silimom, you and your husband handled things the right way in my opinion, and I'm so glad your step daughter has turned things around. Kudos to her and to you!

Okay, off of my soapbox now.

The thing about being given these electronics as gifts is that within a few months they are obsolete, or at least dinosaurs because the newest version has replaced it. So you want that one now.

Having to save for it to by yourself presents its own problems. By the time you get enough saved that product may be replaced with something entirely new and more exciting and the one you thought you wanted no longer has any appeal - and of course the new thing is twice the price. Planned obsolescence.

LoveMyGrandsons said... 97

fidosmommy, my daughter makes fun of me all the time for being a "dinosaur". I do not have an IPod, IPad, Kindle, or even the latest cell phone.

I have a prepaid Motorola phone I bought about 8 years ago for $19.00 and my quarterly phone card is only $20.00 every 3 months. No texting, no pictures, nothing.

We have a land line and finally got a digital camera last year, which I am still learning how to use!

Yep, my cell phone serves my purposes; if I break down on the road, or have another emergency, I can call for help. That's the only reason I carry one. So I guess I am a dinosaur - lol!!

While I haven't seen the documentary, I have watched the three or four episodes on MTV, and I am really intrigued by the premise...because for about four years, I was the "Catfish" (even if there wasn't a term for it yet).

It was between 2000-2004 thereabouts, which is how I managed to get away with it- no Skype back then. It wasn't even for online dating– I was involved in an online RPG/fanfiction group and for whatever created an entirely new persona to interact with the group. "I" lived abroad (so that nobody would try and meet me in real life), and actually had a pretty boring "life": young mother with a colic-y infant, a dull desk job and a husband in college.

This went on for four years, and if anyone in the group suspected otherwise, I sure as Hell didn't know. I chatted with these people on AIM multiple times a week, shared stories about our lives, traded private jokes, and had a great time enjoying each others company. The group died a natural death, and really just in time- with webcams, Google, YouTube etc, there is no way I'd be able to pull that off these days and I'm astonished that anyone tries.

Why did I do it? Who knows. Not me. I was a relatively popular high school student, had plenty of friends, a loving family and a comfortable lifestyle- but for whatever reason, I wanted to be somebody else for awhile. Maybe it was embarrassment over being involved in this kind of group (although I was a pretty huge nerd, so WTH?). I would never do it again, and haven't.

The funny thing is? I miss that person I became. Sometimes I think, "I wonder what she's up to these days?" only to remind myself that "she" never existed. I Catfished myself!

RPG stands for "Role-Playing Game". Like "Dungeons and Dragons", but online. Fanfiction is fan-created stories written about movies, plays, celebrities, etc. In my case, the RPG and the fanfiction group were about the same movie, the game was a spinoff of the writer's group.

They are two very geeky things to be involved with, but I was (and still am) a colossal nerd and was never shy about that...so why I decided to create this persona for this group alone is beyond me.

From Wikipedia:

Plot

According to the series creator, a "catfish" is an online figure who pretends to be someone they are not by using someone else's pictures and information. These "catfish" use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, usually with the intention of getting other people or a person to fall in love with them. MTV and the producers of the documentary film Catfish send Nev Schulman and his friend and filmmaker Max Joseph to help couples who have never met in real life. They want to know if the person they have had a relationship with and fallen in love with is the real deal or if they are a "catfish." Some couples have been together for a few months, others have been together for years. Nev, who has fallen victim of a "catfish," claims that he has received requests from people asking him for his help in determining whether or not their online-only significant other is lying or telling the truth about their identity, and that the people featured on the MTV series were hand-picked from these requests, which were a response to his indy film Catfish. Evidence of casting calls for the series has been used to discredit this explanation. Each episode is a different couple with a different story and Nev flies out to wherever they live and tries to help them by doing background checks and research to uncover the truth. He will contact the other person to get a meeting set up so they both can meet for the first time and documents the outcome.[2][3] Schulman says it's not all about pulling the rug out from under people.[1]

I liked the movie as well, but throughout there were hinky inconsistencies with lead me to believe it wasn't real. It's an interesting premise, though.

As for being "catfished", I'm convinced a woman who belongs to an online group I'm in has munchausen's by internet, as in she constantly seeks attention with a recurring tumor and other health problems. She obviously thrives off the positive attention she gets and otherwise seems to be a nice person so I (and others who suspect the same thing) tend to ignore her dramas and leave it at that.

Although my name is fake, my "Monrovia" persona is real. Although I tend to avoid providing specific details about myself, those of you who know me from other blogs and facebook should know that the details I do choose to share are real. So no "catfishing" here... Other than sharing the same identity as about six other "haters." *snort*

Lilly or anyone, I need technical help. This is on my laptop only, but that is my primary computer.

I generally use Firefox. Suddenly, the name/url box became about 1/4 its usual size and I cannot change it so that I'm able to post.
So I went to google chrome and signed in successfully several times. Then all of a sudden the name/url box locked onto "Google Account."

This stays whether I sign in or not. I still get the drop down box and have tried to change it, but no matter what I do my post disappears into the ether and the box reverts to "Google Account."

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this would be welcome.

My techie DH has issues with IE, so that is not an option.

Ok I'm rewatching and I forgot that Angela said she had cancer. Was that true or did she make that up too? Odd she kept it a secret until she met him.

Also Nev said the twists and drama Angela came up with were really smart. I tend to agree.

At the very end, it was scrolled across the screen that Angela did NOT have cancer.

I was reading a twitter feed and Walt said that Kate is at this race because she's got to fulfill the R&R contract that she signed last year. I do remember there being talk of an R &R contract at the time and that the BBB was leased for a year as part of the deal. If R&R did sign her to a contract for a year I'm guessing that it was based on the same type of info that CC got promoting Kate prompting them to sign her to a contract...and we all know how that turned out. She really hasn't done a thing to promote this race or anything R&R. I wonder if her "running girls" are on the same contract. It's all very curious.

FYI said... 129

I'm curious to see if her times and her "marathon girls" times are exactly the same, like they were last year.

If that's true, then wouldn't the contract expire with this race? I think the first marathon she did was the same one, Vegas last year. IIRC.

No more racing for you!

You ready to report the play by play @MiloandJack ? It's very windy with windy gusts... So don't expect any records today, okay? :D

&&&

She's already setting up an excuse why her times will be crappy. I love it. She even plans in advance for sucking. I guess the golf cart fell through.

Milo must be crapping her pants to be so anointed.

Oh another thing about Angela, I think she was very loving and gentle with her two special needs children--children by the way who weren't even hers.

Well, I WAS gonna ask for upbeat thoughts for my spate of tests tomorrow, but y'all might think I'm catfishing...

As for Kate, I think she had some contract with the rock n roll folks and this will be it. Don't really care.

Much more excited about littlest GS coming back later this week for a bit of an extended stay.

Milo would be a great at one of those 900 number jobs.

If the R&R contract began and ends with the LV marathon, it will be interesting to see if she ever runs again. I bet not. LOL
She really has exhausted all avenues, hasn't she? Her latest show biz venture involved a playboy playmate. Not exactly A list, is it.

Thanks for the info Kate is a twit. Weird that Kate and Paula have the same exact time.

FYI said... 159

carezee--they had the exact same times last year too--for all points for the full marathon.

I wonder if they're pacing each other, and crossing the timing mats together, but it seems strange that Ellen is almost 3 minutes behind them. You would think all 3 would stick together, if that were the case.

PatK said... 160

Wonder why she only did the half this year. Guess she's not as tough as she thought and that full marathon last year was too much for her... hence the scooter ride?

Super woman, my behind.

FYI said... 161

Looks like Kate left the "marathon girls" behind. Paula & Ellen haven't reached 10K yet.

Kate
Point Time Time of Day Pace Avg. Pace

Milo apparently doesn't understand how long a half marathon is.

miloandjack
@Kateplusmy8 Yay...U just posted the 10k mark!Just a few miles more!? :) YaY!!!!

10K=6.2 miles
half= 13.1 miles

So she's only run about half the race-she has more than a "few" more miles.

carezee said... 163

I hate to say this but I won't believe her time unless there is someone there as an eye witness. The other ladies do this all the time. The one that was the same time as her at 5k hasn't shown up to the 10k yet. Seems odd to me.

On the carpet @runrocknroll: @kateplusmy8 who tells me her max is #10 miles in one run to train. Posing w/ @Cirque #KAhttp://t.co/15WujdTQ(preview)

On Nov. 17, Kate tweeted:

Kate Gosselin‏@Kateplusmy8
Just back from running a little over 12 miles... Ate everything in my fridge lol, now I'm off to accomplish my never ending list of 'to do'!

Did Kate just get caught in another lie? She tells this guy that her max is 10 miles in one run to train, but yet she tweeted that she ran a little over 12 miles two weeks ago?

Zoe said... 166

I enjoyed watching Catfish but some of the scene's seemed a little unbelievable to be recordings of first ever meetings. For example, can you imagine taking three strange young men in your car over to another person's house and introducing them to 2 little girls? One was her daughter, but the other had no connection to the whole thing. And that footage of the little girl in the house on the stairway was creepy to me. No sign of any other adults around. And what was up with him taking mail out of that mailbox? From what I saw he didn't just pull it out and look at it, but kept it with him. Strange.

Now Paula's time is showing for the 10 mile point, but not the 10K point. Weird.

Sorry that came out all jumbled. Looks like Paula is ahead of Kate, and Ellen is lagging behind.

By the way, Kate's finish time for the SD half was 01:56:43 with a pace of 8:55. So it doesn't look like she's going to beat it, but she wasn't lying about the winds. I looked at the live TV coverage, and they did say it was very windy.

It was HIS postcards, no one had ever picked it up. I would have taken it too especially since the whole thing was crashing down right then.

carezee said... 170

Kate is a twit... don't you find the whole thing a bit odd? I wish we knew someone who was running there. The fact that all of a sudden her pictures on her phone don't work.... makes you wonder.

FYI said... 171

carezee--now that Kate's, Paula's and Ellen's times are all different, I think the times are legit. It was just weird that no time showed for Paula for l0K.

As far as the pictures go-perhaps Ellen and Paula did not want their pictures posted, and Kate just made up that excuse.

FYI said... 172

carezee--there was just a note posted on the tracking site, which could explain no 10K time for Paula:

NOTE: We are experiencing a problem receiving some times for the 10K
Thank You for your patience!

ampersmom said... 173

I don;t know for sure but I suspect that Kate's transmitter problems early was when her and Ellen switched. That these slower times for Ellen is actually Kate's real times. I could be wrong but....then we know how honest Kate is

Is anyone following Milo's tweets? Every few minutes there is more update nonsense. If you get a chance, skim through them and insert the voice of a man from the 50s or 60s giving the update on a horse race. She's going to need splints on those thumbs.

And Kate sees nothing wrong with this?

In case you were wondering, @MiloandJack is a huge Kate Gosselin fan. As a matter of fact, she is such a big fan, she had the honor of live blogging Gosselin's entire race. Needless to say, Kate was off and running, kicking up her heels and getting a little exercise on a windy December evening... with a little support from a dedicated fan.
