In a surprise move, the acclaimed reality show The Biggest Loser, which premiered tonight, has for the first time added kids to their cast. Bingo, age 13, Lindsay, also 13, and Sunny, age 16, are part of the cast this season. The show promises to tackle childhood obesity with the addition of the three kids. Fortunately, Biggest Loser films in Calabasas in California, protected by California's well-received child labor laws for reality shows. By law, a parent or guardian, and a set teacher, will need to be at the ranch when the children are there.
The Biggest Loser changed a few things to accommodate the kids. They can't be voted off, and they won't participate in the famous, sometimes demoralizing, weekly weigh-ins. They appear to be thus far more like a smaller side story parallel to the main contestants, the adults.
The move has not been without controvesy, however. Fitness guru and author Golda Poretsky says the show encourages bullying of overweight children, and physician Yoni Freedhoff is calling for an all-out boycott. Said Dr. Freedhoff:
"I would imagine that the psychological devastation of weight regain in any of these children will be far more damaging to them, and far more likely to be ridiculed by their peers and even complete strangers, than regain in any adult participant. As far as blame goes - I don't blame the children for wanting to be involved (their parents I'll cover tomorrow) - the show's messaging is incredibly seductive. I do however blame the producers as no doubt they understand the implications of these kids being in America's cold, hard, spotlight and however well intentioned they might claim to be, ultimately what they're doing is exploiting children for the sake of viewers, and I believe, putting children in true harm's way."Coach Bob Harper had this to say: "With the kids, we wanted to do exactly the opposite of when we work with the adults. We do no breaking down, just lifting up ... It's about getting kids to move around again and getting kids to be kids."
But the show is already putting a lot of responsibility on the kids, calling them "ambassadors." What if they can't live up to the expectations for them? How will a 13-year-old handle such pressures in front of a national audience?

LMG - I have never posted about your smoking situation before but I feel bad for you. My Dad has smoked his whole life. He recently moved to a new house and smokes only outside. It did make a huge difference as there is no smoke smell there at all and the walls stay clean. He smokes less, too, but hasn't been able to quit. He has tried. I hope you all find a way to work it out.
aggie, thanks hon. I understand my daughter's concern for the health of her boys as well. We have come to a comprimise and I know I will feel better about that tomorrow. Still "digesting".
SeeSaw, thank you sweetie. I understand the point because my father, and most of my relatives, were smokers. It's just something I grew up with and at one time, I was a smoker myself. I understand the issues and will continue to pray for acceptance or to agree to disagree. As long as we can still see the boys, that's what matters.
LMG. Looking for the finding something to be thankful for. And found several. DD called and you talked and you were calm. Your grandson called you. Your nephew lives only an hour away. You will get to see those precious grand babies. And DH is a good sleeper. Baby steps.
Hugs to you, Friend.
LMG....so sorry. You are in a hard place. It's not how you thought things would be, and it's hard. It's so hard to come to terms with loss of dreams. Perhaps there will be a better answer as time goes on.
Maybe you/hubs could offer to put them up in a hotel, and you two stay in an adjoining room. That way you would still get to do hot cocoa after jammies and hubs could still smoke (outside the building).
Just a thought.
Re Kate's tweet tonight about making homemade granola for the first time.
Ahem. She made homemade granola bars with Emeril. The recipes are listed on the Jon & Kate Plus 8 site- clearly contradicting what she just tweeted. (Unless you draw a distinction between "Homemade granola" and "homemade granola bars." Silly, that, because they use the same ingredients.
http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/tv/kate-plus-8/emeril.htm
But oh, this image made me teary-eyed...poor Shoka, watching everyone play/eat from the vantage point of his cage. Nala's in the same predicament, on the previous slide. :(

So far I found the cottage cheese strudel recipe. Will definitely post that tomorrow...do not want to type that out on the iPad. Lazy me. Still looking for paprikas recipe.
Bless you, Carolina Peach. Those are the things to be thankful for, and I especially love the call from my youngest grandson. Thank you, friend.
Mel, thank you hon. That's a great idea and I think I will suggest that to my daughter. Regardless of the response, at least the boys will be 5 hours closer than they are now. Keep thinking positive, LMG!! Lol!
I want to thank you all for your opinions and encouragement. I didn't mean to derail the blog again, but it seems I did. Sorry Admin, and thanks to all of you.
Much Love and Blessings to All of You,
LMG

@Kateplusmy8 what? I got 2 close 2 the truth? You didnt deny France in yest tweet, but 2day you block me? Lying by omission is still a lie!
Anonymous this time... I told her I was amazed at her energy esp after an overseas vacation and asked her where she gets her energy from? It was on her tweet about the granola for a few minutes, then she blocked me!
LMG, a compromise is an agreement everyone can live with. A compromise never perfect, but it's better than some of the alternatives.
You have found compromise. That is so much more than others will ever find. Not one of us could come up with a better solution for a struggle between 3 people who love each other than those 3 people themselves. You have done well. Just remember, "I get to see my grandsons and my daughter, I get to see my grandsons and my daughter...."
I think Kate's freaked out because she outed the France thing and tlc could be pissed. Hence blocking.
LMG,
I missed something- your split personality, LOL!
So glad to hear you will get see your grandsons. This 'new' will be normal in no time. Stay strong!
Thank you fidosmommy and butterfly. I am digesting better now and this is a blessing. And yes, this may be the normal that we WILL get used to. At least we all still get to see each other. Blessings to you both.
Those tweets to Kate last night are not in Quebec French. It's Parisian French. Canadian (Quebec) French is really 17th century French (the way it was spoken when mass immigration to Canada occurred from Brittany back in the late 1700's).
Additionally, "Boucher" is a very common French last name. Yes, it means "butcher," but there are many Americans who have "Butcher" as a last name also.
Not trying to be difficult, just pointing this out since I lived in France for several years.
Roasted brussell sprouts. Have only baked them for a few minutes. Will try your recipe, that sounds so good.
Question: Does anyone else find even with the small containers of spices, they have some that sit in the cabinet for years? I had some so old that now they're collector tins and I bought the darn things not so many years ago to use.
I know may of us grew up with smoking. Nobody gave it a second thought. It just as much of the culture as morning coffee and aprons and hats and gloves on Sundays. And if Lucy smoked, really. How could that be bad? It was just different then. We were conditioned, all of us, it was Normal. My addiction of choice is food, for others it's shopping, others alcohol, others tobacco. But the only who can fix me is me. When I make the decision to do something about it I will. I hear BLAHBLAHBLAH when someone mentions it to me. LMG & DH will handle it in their own way and time.
Believe me, the only person advice makes feel better is the one giving it. Hey who said that? Oh yeah, me.
re overweight children:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsNlcr4frs4
This is about 8 minutes long, it was filmed about 10 months ago. He will be age 18 this week. THIS is the kind of kid who could be doing a 'reality' show about getting healthier, all the while becoming an international superstar - which they are now. He will be 18 in a few days and can make his own decisions and that is who should be doing shows about kids.
Yes, the girl will make a couple of mistakes, but she will get past them to become a sensation.
The point is, he talks about his weight and what the teasing has done to him. There are pics of his mum and sister all over the internet and he is the only one that is heavy, I believe.
Please watch this, at least enough to hear his story and the reaction he got on stage, due to his weight.
What happened to Kate's industrial meat slicer and her bread machine? Now she's moved onto yogurt making. Is this part of her attempt to get a cooking show or cookbook? She flits from one thing to the next - there's no substance or depth to her life. And the chickens. Haven't heard about them for awhile. Maybe that's what Shoka lived on while Kate was off somewhere making memories.
Jane
Narcissists always flit from one thing to the next never committing to anything for long. Just like people, things get discarded quick too.
Re: people thinking Kate went to France. I just don't buy it. I don't see anything marketable in watching her in France. It's a refined, cultured country. She is not. She is more Reno Nevada than Paris France. That is why I find such a disconnect between her potentially traveling there. The viewing public made it known they were sick and tired of her traveling the globe like a rockstar on TLC's dime and acting like a new money diva. There would have to be a network willing to believe people have forgotten their disgust with her opulent lifestyle. I just don't see it. Help me if I've missed something here.....

Very well said. You hit the nail on the head.
Staci was over-weight,from a struggling family and a different color than me.Until I was "taught" that, she was just my best-friend in the whole wide world. (and still is)

Oh Starz, what a wonderful story! My DD was in kindergarten, came home one day babbling about her newest bestest friend who had an unusual name. After a week of BFF this and BFF that, I finally asked if BFF was black. Yes, I asked my 6 year old that. you know what she said? "Hmmm, i dont know, I'll check tomorrow".
I have always always regretted saying that to her and putting my 1950s thoughts in her sweet mind. She taught me to be a better mom that day.
I hope that is ok to say here.

Dearest, you could teach a course on dignified replies that reek of dignity and respect.
Kudos.
Dwindle, 20 -- that is a beautiful story. The lesson is so pure. From the mouths of innocent children.
There has been a few mentions of Paris over the last few months:
1. Look @EmCr68 ! It was Paris pasta night! Extra bonus to whoever got an Eiffel Tower!:) http://t.co/ZtqEG7ph (tweeted 4 months ago)
2. Did Kate not also recently tweet that one of the boys said they wanted to go to paris in one of her kids say the darndest things tweetisodes?
3. In some of the tabloid articles in Dec, I recall Kate saying the places on the top of her list were Sth Africa...etc..etc.. but the kids really wanted to go to paris, so it was #1 on the list.
kate has been giving hints, but will deny deny even in the face of being proven. remember her tweets about dreaming of cruising in a convertible. We all know she has one, but has she ever admitted to owning that audi?
me thinks even more so that she was in Paris... and her pre lim tweets were so she could say, but the kids really wanted to go, and they are at the age where they get to make all the deicions. And if they went and it was a vacation without cameras or other exploitation, then whoo hoo, however, if it was with Cameras, then shame on kate!
For crying out loud, Sally: I do hope you are not a Québécoise! Québécois french is NOT "really 17th century French (the way it was spoken when mass immigration to Canada occurred from Brittany back in the late 1700's)" It is french as spoken today, in the 21st century, in the province of Québec. Have you even ever heard how 17 century french from Brittany sounds like?!! The equivalent in english would be english as spoken by a peasant in a Shakespearean play.
Plus: I very seriously doubt that a Parisian living in a château would write that she lives "pas loin de Paris". The correct way would be "près de Paris. The tweet as a hoax.
LMG, we know those kids fill your heart. Give it time. A year from now you will be living the solution. I know a year is very long when it comes to those boys, but it doesnt sound like this is something that YOU single handedly can fix in one swoop.
Hogs to you.
Dwindle, darlin', thank you. As it was stated earlier, this may become the new norm, and we can still see each other and the boys. So it is the compromise I was praying for, although secretly I was hoping it would go more in MY way. The Lord knew better and taught me again to be more honest in what I really want and to accept the compromise that I did indeed ask for.
By the way, hon, that was such a sweet story about your daughter. How we learn from our children!
Love and hogs to you, hon!
Dwindle,
I just watched that video- Thank you!! I am smiling so big!! Charlotte is so sweet to Jonathon and they performed brilliantly. WOW.
One of my memories of being in France is the natives refusing to speak English with us. Only one person in my group spoke French and the rest of us were ignored. I can just imagine Kate getting that treatment as she tries to order her escargot or purchase some really stylin Parisian dresses.

When I was in Italy the natives refused to speak English, too. And they didn't smile very much. I did not leave Rome and Naples with a very good impression of Italians. Now Portugal, those were some friendly folks :)
It's a refined, cultured country. She is not. She is more Reno Nevada than Paris France.

Hey, watch it! ;-
White Organza,
That tweet reminds me of someone using a tool like Google Translate. My friends do that to me a lot, to try and impress me since I am trained in another language, but it's funny how you can spot grammatical and idiomatic anomalies when an automated translator is used ;)

So sorry Melissa NV!! I knew in the second I hit publish that I may have stepped on someone's toes. LOL. My sincerest apologies. But I had to pick somewhere and if I said North Vancouver, well it just wouldn't have had the same meaning!
Same experience in France.They won't speak English. And I was extremely polite and conscious of not being an ugly American. I can't imagine how they would treat someone as uncouth as Kate. She'd be eaten alive.
However in Italy I didn't have the same experience as Butterfly. I was there in May--two things would happen, you would speak English, they would speak Italian back and somehow it actually worked out (LOL!) or they would start off by saying I'm so sorry my English is terrible, then proceed to speak perfect Queen's English to you. Good times.
Ha, maybe things didnt go well in france, and like the RV episode, kate doesnt want to talk about it too much! ..lol..
I 100% agree with Meagler.
My guess is that TLC finalized the trip in October or November. That's when Kate knew she had to put it out there so not very subtly the kids just love, love, love the idea of a vacation in Paris! PLEASE.
And what a coincidence her whipping boy wants to go to Paris the most! She has to be sure we know the one kid we worry about the most wants to go.
Think about it, we never heard a peep about Paris before, now Kate suddenly mentions it several times?
If I were a TLC exec I would think it would be a funny idea to send the rudest woman in America to a country that is stereotypically uptight. Hysterical antics ensue!!!
Admin I had the same experience in Italy. I found if you try to speak some Italian they will help you and switch to English if they know some. I was lost at a metro station and two older Italian men helped me tremendously without speaking a word of English. Lots of gestures and simple Italian. They were very sweet.

Would Ms CakeFace even KNOW that? Wouldnt she be flapping and screeching around about why are all these people speaking "European" or "France" or "Parisy" or something?
Werent there stories about Italians being disgusted by those Snookie people when they went there to film? Some of the smaller cities refused to cooperate with filming and they were very unwelcome with their ugly american antics over there.
And Kate ordering escargot? LOL! "Doesnt anyone in this stupid country just have normal fish in paper!?!" as someone slings a catfish and yesterday's newspaper at her.
My, that visual is entertaining.
I adored Italians and was so proud of the country that my grandmother came from in the 20's. It was a very, very special day to be in Palermo where my family is from. It meant a lot to us. We were trying to get to the famous catacombs. But the map I had was only the city center and they were just a few blocks off the map. I thought for sure we could figure it out once we were off the map. Yeah no such luck!
We asked a lovely woman and her teenage daughter for help. They didn't speak English but tried to give us directions anyway with gestures. I think they sensed our deeper confusion and said no worries just come with us come with us!! They led us through the streets for a good fifteen minutes right to the door of the church. It was SOOO nice of them. We felt like we were on Amazing Race hailing a local LOL. What lovely people to take so much time to help some hapless Americans trying to discover their roots.

Their story has just exploded! No they are not a couple, just the dearest of friends. My 86 year old former MIL saw that clip for the first time last week and cried. I actually emailed Jonathon that and got a kind response!
"it sort of took the mick out of me..." What a sweet boy! and you never know what is hiding inside an overweight child.
Oh I just remembered, the guys dressed as Gladiators walking around the park outside the Coliseum spoke english, they had "2 euros" down perfect! LOL!!
I did like the city of Rome, never saw anything like it (thank you, Navy), but the natives I can live without. What's funny is anyone who is stationed there LOVES it and they dont want to come back here, so I guess it grows on you.
Paris is on my to-do list. Dublin, too. Well heck, Romania too. Why not. I can be like Kate ;) But, Bahrain is next for me...sigh

444444444444
yeah, they are all in plastic jars now, or perhaps glass.
Look at them carefully, I would suggest. I have heard that old spices can get buggy or wormy. I have never had that happen to me, but I have heard of it. I had some ground cloves this season that didnt look right at all, looked almost powdery, not ground, so I threw it out.
Butterfly that's odd. Were you in uniform out of curiosity? Is it obvious you are American? I've noticed when I'm in Europe it helps to dress like the locals. There are a lot of web sites that can help with that. I mainly wore skinny dark pants and flowy tops. We look Italian too, so maybe that helps. And we made a point to tell people our grandmother was Italian and they just loved this.
This country was NOTHING like the rest of Europe, the people so welcoming, the prices so cheap, the transportation so easy and cheap, the humor so effortless, the beauty so majestic, the wine so silky. My experience was so lovely I'd like to retire there someday and am going back this year. I have never done that in my life, gone back to the same place within the same year.
Lol, Butterfly: I think you nailed it! I knew it wasn't from a Parisian châtlelaine, that's for sure, but after Frankie pointed it out, I thought it might be a from a young teenager from Québec. Something was off. And, yeah, because I do use these automatic translators all the time for opera, the phrasing in that tweet is very similar to the results I get.
Admin,
That is a great story! My experience was so different. I came in on an aircraft carrier and we pulled into Naples, so that city was bracing for American Sailors, and you know our reputation, LOL. We had tours to Rome and other cities, I went to Rome, and like any big city, the people were not friendly, at all. At the Vatican we just got stared at- I dont how they could tell we were different 0_o
We were def hassled by street vendors trying to sell (steal) 1 kid did get swindled. That happens anywhere though, I would expect from NY just as much as Rome. But that was my experience. Don't pull into Italy 5000 strong as a foreign military force :D

The only thing worse than an obese adult, is an obese child.
I never blame a child for their weight problem. It's the parents who create these unhealthy and unatractive young people with poor diets and lazy lifestyles. When you see a fat kid, nine out of ten times they have a fat parent.
I applaud these parents for recognizing the problem and doing whatever it takes to get these kids to lose weight.

Admin,
We are never allowed to be in uniform in foreign ports- makes us a target.
I would love to go to Rome as an art history major student,- think I am too late for that? Sounds like a dream!
LMG you have shown me what classy is all about. Your daughter is lucky to have you. You have made me aware of how to be a more graceful person. Thank you.
Re: France. It's my worst language and none of them are good. But I actually found if I was kind and smiled, it worked. You see, they are quite out of the world proud of their language and many of them know less English than I do French. And we are neither of us understandable in what we think we say, so a good laugh gets you kindness in return.

re: smoking
I am not a smoker, so I will admit it's hard for me to grasp continuing to smoke when it is affecting your family.
However, my ex's brother died at 56 from lung cancer 6 years ago and his youngest brother was just diagnosed with throat cancer at 50. Did he stop smoking when his brother died? No. He didn't even pause. So I get that it is highly addictive.
Anyone who accepts obesity is a burdon to their family and society. It's the choice of a lazy mind and body.
&&&
For some people, it is laziness. But many people here have offered examples of people eating identical diets and going about identical exercise routines only to have one person be obese and one thin.
In my case I've seen the exact same thing-- lovely family friends have teen twins who have played the same sports, eaten the same foods and done virtually everything the same (they wanted to, are inseparable). One is thin as a rail, one is on the pudgy side. Ironically, the thin one doesn't even do as many sports anymore and the pudgy one is on track to be scouted for professional baseball! How do you explain two kids from such similar backgrounds having completely different body types? Genetics.
And neither one of them is LAZY. They are overscheduled maniacs and always have been and the pudgy one never went a season without playing a sport.
LMG, do what is right for you and your family.
I'm disgusted that posters are telling you to dump your husband.
Your daughter IS correct, but there needs to be a kinder way for her to deal with this.
You are a grand granny and I have no doubt this will be alright when everyone calms down.
If obesity is the result of laziness, then how do you explain skinny lazy people? Lucky?
I was in Paris a few months ago, uttering this phrase a lot: Je suis desolay, je ne parle pas francais. I am sorry, I do not speak French. And they would often say "English?" and switch! Pointing, smiling, and shrugging with palms up while laughing is very helpful too. NEver had any problems, even if they did not speak English. This is true all over. If you can say hello and please and thank you in their language, that's enough for most people and they are gracious and try to help you.
About the brussels sprouts, you must eat them right away apparently. I made dinner and left it cooling while we went to the gym. They deflated like little balloons. My husband made great, dramatic choking motions and noises as if he was being strangled......I have a lot of brussels sprouts to eat tomorrow! But out of the oven, they are great!
I'm not sure they are too keen on our military. Remember a lot of those people still remember World War 2 and how terrible it was on them. The things those poor people went through are as terrible as the rest of Europe. I think seeing any kind of military presence brings back bad memories. We did a lot of off the beaten track traveling and were astounded at the sheer level of poverty that is going on especially in the south.
I thought the US had offered to help them salvage their cruise ship that went down and they refused. Looks at your clothes and hair and sneakers then look at the European next to you--that's how they know who you are.
Did that PJ, didn't work.
All respect to them, but they were extremely rude to people who were trying as hard as they could to be respectful. It's totally unnecessary. Most of the rest of Europe does not behave this way.

That's funny cuz I was wearing my Chuck Converse everyday I was in port. They should be used to us Naples though, we have a huge presence.
I will def go back, just not as part of a deployment. I will go on my own, on a true vacation and savor every moment. There is so much to see, one trip cannot possibly do it justice.
Plus I love Dan Brown books, and we called our Rome tour the Dan Brown tour- it was awesome!! Ok, that was the book nerd in me, but I wasnt alone- there was a few of us.
I cant even begin to imagine Kate in Paris, or anywhere in France. What will she do if she cant get food to her liking? My sweetie travels internationally for a living and he was just in the UK and he ordered room service as there were no vending machines or convenient stores or fast food joints and even in the UK, the room service was different enough than our own food to warrant a phone call back home to laugh. What would Kate do? Have a melt down? She cant feed her 8 kids their specific dietary demands of beef tenderloin? Organic mac and cheese? Stonyfield yogurt?
It's not rocket science, folks.
With very rare exceptions, weight is solely determined by calories consumed and calories burned.
Our country can't afford to continue paying for the medical problems caused by obesity. Maybe there should be a weight tax ala cigarrete tax that fines anyone who is more than 10 or 15 pounds overweight? Add a perect to their taxes for each pound overweight they are? Something along those lines might work. And it'd give them less money to waste on pizza!
I don't believe Ms Kreider went anywhere.
IF she did, and it was filmed, it will be boring, because she is boring and oh so predictable. Complain, grumble, find some fun she can spoil, get hysterics because things are not going according to her schedule, and find some more fun she can spoil. Ho hum.
With very rare exceptions, weight is solely determined by calories consumed and calories burned.
&&
I disagree. Genetics play a huge role. There are plenty of people who pig out and do nothing all day and are skinny. This is not some rare phenomenon. It's COMMON. If you don't think genetics play a role, how do you explain why certain ethnic groups struggle far more with weight and certain ethnic groups don't have a problem whatsoever. Especially those from Arctic climates? Every body stores fat differently largely determined by your genetics.
Ah phooey, I'm sorry you had that experience, Admin. Don't know why mine was so different, but I spend most of my time alone so I'm glad it was good. I even had a guy in a pizza place telling me he speaks 7 languages, including Arabic, and rattled them off. He is Jewish and I am Christian and we had a really nice conversation - and he doesn't even expect a tip! But yes, the French are known for being rude and standoffish. But I don't care - it's only a few days and we are generally thought of as buffoons, so I consider it a wash! We were treated far worse in Hungary, but I think they are just sort of unhappy by nature because they've been through so much as a people. Japanese people are not very helpful either, but that's because they fear losing face, not out of rudeness.
Dwindle #20
It was ok that you asked that. Sometimes we learn so much from our children's eyes.
Looka, I know the calories in and energy out formula has validity. But, I think it is more complicated than that. Genetics have already been mentioned.
Another issue is, sadly, aging. What worked for me when I was younger, doesn't work the same way now.
Menopause/hormones change the balance dramatically.
It is always a choice. Sometimes a difficult one. Chocolate will always be more tempting than cauliflower.
Maybe there should be a weight tax ala cigarrete tax that fines anyone who is more than 10 or 15 pounds overweight? Add a perect to their taxes for each pound overweight they are?
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
I'm sure those who are elderly, disabled, or in nursing homes would love that. If they can't work out due to age or disability, just fine the heck out of them until they lose weight by working out in the facility's gym with a personal trainer.
What is a perect?
If anything I eat way more healthier than I used to but it's definitely much easier to put on weight. I had several weeks of being under the weather this summer and I lost too much weight. As soon as I felt better and wanted to get back to where I am I regained it all back within weeks, it was easy. I literally just ate like three big cookies after dinner each night and substituted juice or soda for water and that was that.
Admin (56) "Most of the rest of Europe does not behave this way."
True... In 2011, the French government even launched a campaign "Rendez-vous en France" trying to counter this problem because it was affecting the tourist industry.
"A Friendlier France
The French government is seeking to revamp the country’s bad reputation with a marketing campaign specifically intended to attract more tourists. The Rendez-Vous en France campaign aims to present a welcoming France. It also seeks to show the French as gracious hosts that are willing to share their culture to visitors."
I disagree. Genetics play a huge role.
***********************
Agree. No one should ever assume that every overweight or obese person is a glutton or lazy. It's simply not true.
My cousin was a state champion swimmer all through high school. She worked out and swam for hours a day even as a younger child. She was also very overweight. She was a huge chubby baby at birth and stayed that way. Her siblings were very thin. She had the same activity level and food intake as a child as her siblings. the whole family was extremely active athletically. Her parents had her checked by numerous specialists but they just couldn't explain it and told the family there are just genetic components we may never understand. It was devastating to my cousin who couldn't understand why she was that way no matter how much she worked out daily and made selective food choices to keep her champion swim status. It killed her self-esteem and she ended up later with a lifestyle that was not good due to this. People were unkind to her, not just kids, except for those within the swim world and our family, who knew how hard she worked.
In my more immediate family, several have severe thyroid problems, not just the typical hypothyroid. Doesn't matter what they do. My sister is one, and she is a marathon runner and a vegetarian. Doesn't matter. She is still quite overweight. Her doctor told her there are some patients who are just in this situation and it can't be helped. She's doing everything "right" and will continue to do so, but she is coming to accept that all of her efforts aren't going to change her weight apparently, but she is very healthy otherwise.
And then there is my brother-in-law - spends his days eating red Twizzlers and sour patch candy, laying on the couch watching movies. And weighs around 120 pounds at age 47.
I NEVER assume that someone's obesity or weight is due to their own choices. I can only hope that those who do assume such will never have to experience a health problem that causes them to have to take the disdain that they give the genetically or health-impaired people daily.
I'm sure those who are elderly, disabled, or in nursing homes would love that. If they can't work out due to age or disability, just fine the heck out of them until they lose weight by working out in the facility's gym with a personal trainer.

Yeah, it is a little cumbersome to haul my oxygen tank around while I'm at the gym. And since I'm soon going to be in a wheelchair, I guess I'll need to start saving my cash for those extra taxes. Do you think I can use my wheelchair on the treadmill?
Another topic. Please. All this talk of Kate in France reminds me of the I Love Lucy episodes where she is in Paris. She goes to an outdoor cafe and orders escargot, and when she discovered they were snails.... and, she gets arrested as a counterfeiter when she buys art on the street. At the police station nobody can understand anybody, so they get a line-up. The French policeman speaks to the French/German speaking prisoner, the French/German speaking prisoner translates to the German/Italian speaking man, and the German/Italian speaking man translates in Spanish to Ricky, who translates to Lucy in English. Hysterical.

I was in Paris a few months ago,...NEver had any problems, even if they did not speak English. This is true all over. If you can say hello and please and thank you in their language, that's enough for most people and they are gracious and try to help you
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We had similar experiences in France. Same with all of Europe.
I truly believe a smiling demeanor, combined wiht a healthy sense of curiosity & gratitude, goes a long way towards softening even the most brittle local's heart.
If I find I'm not getting a warm reception, I try to remember that and make adjustments. Because in the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not." That's my belief/experience, anyway.
Re my comments at 70, I hope I've not offended anyone. I'm not suggesting-- not by any means--that anybody here deserves bad service and/or attitudes when they visit foreign countries. I don't know a single traveler who hasn't encountered elitist behavior now and again, and boy howdy, we all know what it's like to come face--to-face with surly locals. But on the whole, I think most people want to do well by others, no matter their country of origin. That's been my observation, anyway.
Anyway, I just wanted to clarify that while I have had many and will only speak for my self, and for my own experiences.
Argh! I accidentally deleted the words between these asterisks. Time for bed, I guess. :)
Anyway, I just wanted to clarify that while I have had *many wonderful trips abroad, I can and will only* speak for myself, and for my own experiences.
'Night all! Sleep well...
The Biggest Loser is my favorite show. I've seen every season, and am seriously considering submitting an application to be on the show. When I heard there would be kids on this season, I wasn't really sure how I felt about it. Part of me thought it would be wonderful to see them get help, but I DO have an issue with kids being on reality TV. I know they're being treated differently than the adults, and won't be seen very often, but I'm still uneasy about it.
@Looka, Wow. What to say to you? Your comments for the most part have been uneducated, insensitive, assuming and ridden with animosity.
You have a lot of research to do. A sensitivity class wouldn't hurt either.
I really do
I suffered from a debilitating ulcer a few years ago, just as this blog was getting popular. Some may remember my unexplained "stomach issues" that were finally explained. Any kind of eating was painful so I didn't do it much. BUT my doctor explained that many people find their ulcer feels better when they eat. So they eat, and eat, and eat, and put on weight.
This is just one example of the hundreds of reasons that people put on weight that have absolutely NOTHING, whatsoever, to do with laziness.
For a close friend of mine who I've mentioned before who is morbidly obese, she had her gall bladder taken out a few years ago and her weight ballooned. This is common.
Also for others depression and other mental issues can play a role, mental issues you can't help. The next depressed person may soothe the pain by sleeping all the time instead of eating all the time--neither one is lazy or better than the other, they are DEPRESSED.
Yes some lazy people are fat. But some lazy people are skinny too. I don't see very much correlation at all. I know people who like looking ripped, and then sit around the rest of the time, screw around at their jobs, have dirty homes, don't do anything interesting. I think THESE PEOPLE are lazy, even though they go to the gym.
Very good points and examples admin. In my case, genetics absolutely play a role. Five years ago, my thyroid went into overdrive, swelled up to where I couldn't eat at all. Could barely swallow yogurt. Dropped 70 lbs in 3 months. Am now on medication,(which has to be adjusted fairly often)for the rest of my life. Then I went into menopause(yeehaw,lol). Then 2 years ago my beloved husband died in a motorcycle accident, spinning me into a deep depression, which I am finally pulling myself out of. Oh, and I'm also a type 2 diabetic.Hormones and insulin are out of control. Who wouldn't gain weight with all of that going on? Not looking for a pity party, just stating facts. Some people really do need to see that this is not always about being lazy.
I did join a gym this morning, as I'm determined to turn this ship around, not just for me, but because my husband would be heartbroken if I didn't.
Yeah, it is a little cumbersome to haul my oxygen tank around while I'm at the gym.
----------------
Just make sure that the oxygen tank is disconnected when they weigh you. You don't want the weight of that being included when they figure out how much fine you should pay.
To all the insomniacs out there who are still alive and kicking at 4 a.m. Want to meet up at Denny's for some Grand Slams? :)
Oh my Lord Sleepless, another one. If only we really lived near one another it would be great. I'm on west coast and I've taken to watching the tv version of Imus in the Morning who has a great staff and gets me laughing out loud often. We have to do something after all.
Funny we are talking reality tv and weight and the reality show about really overweight people was on.. I'm tolerant but not to these folks, 600 + pounds and having people, parents and kids, washing them, carrying bed pans, overfeeding them while they lie there barking orders. Not for me. They want to poop, poop. I wouldn't be breaking my back cleaning it up and cleaning them up. Nope. I've got my limits. That is my limit.
The poster on an oxygen tank, I'm realy hoping it wasn't due to smoking!
Went to bed. Got back up. Maybe time to watch The Biggest Loser. I really dislike these sleepless nights. I sure don't want to still be up when Kate has her early AM show.
LMG, I almost spit out my drink when I read, "maybe you should reevaluate your relationship..."
You are a classy lady and I loved your answer.
Semms some (new) posters are perfect people. Never have weight or addiction issues and never loved someone who was. Their insensitivity is alarming but when you are absolutely perfect, sensitivity is overrated.
These people would dump a friend who gained weight, disown a child who becomes an addict and probably divorce a spouse who isn't as cold-hearted and intolerant as she is. Worst type of bigots out there.
Dump a friend who gained weight? Ditch a kid cause she/he got an addiction? Divorce a spouse who had different opinions.
I'm not thinking so.
Bigot? I don't believe so.
Speaking their OWN opinion? I do believe that is ok.
Lack of compassion is an opinion?
Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Nope, cigarettes did not do this to me. I Don't
have emphysema, asthma or cancer. I have a different progressive disease which eventually
required me to have oxygen to breathe. It will
not get better.
Lack of compassion is an opinion?
I see your lack of compassion opinion and raise you my making excuses for other people opinion.
You're right in that I do my damndest to allow only positive, healthy influences in my life. If they are not positive and healthy BUT at least show an effort to TRY, I don't think that's asking too much of my family.
The coddling of today's society is mind boggling. Co dependency thrives!
Anyone still up? or up already? Honestly, I hate these nights, I dont know if I am coming or going.
Dutch Tulip, are you there? isnt it practically Thursday where you are?
The Rott just went over to his dish and then looked at me as if 'well, since ya arent doing anything else, you could get a head start on my breakfast, you know.'
fidosmommy, I can take a guess at what your health problem is, but whatever it is I am sad to hear it. Sounds like you are doing all you can do.
Dwindle, I am here with you. My dogs are sending me the same message.
So acceptance for a person's genetics is making excuses?
Admin I had the same experience in Italy. I found if you try to speak some Italian they will help you and switch to English if they know some. I was lost at a metro station and two older Italian men helped me tremendously without speaking a word of English. Lots of gestures and simple Italian. They were very sweet.
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
This is one reason that when I do finally get to Europe it will be on a guided tour. We got lost at the DC Metro for heaven's sake and people in DC speak my language!
@XXXXX Watching #kateplus8 miss this show hope they have a special soon :)
@Kateplusmy8 not to quote @JustinBieber but 'never say never' ;) lol! @TLC
@XXXXXX @Kateplusmy8 your on TLC this morning. Nice surprise!
@XXXXXXX thanks for letting me know....everyone:) I was busy doing current breakfast and school routine so I didn't know! @TLC
Back in the swing of things, I see. A couple of observations.
1) I don't believe for a minute that she "didn't know," and I think her adding @TLC to a string of related tweets is purposeful.
2) Note the "current" in "current breakfast & school routine." There's an escape clause in that word.
Oh, and all you generous, long-suffering sheeple? Don't for a minute think she's forgotten ewe...
@Kateplusmy8 Slowly but surely..I wanted2thank all of u who sent cards & surprises 2 us 4 Christmas!You know who u are & we had so much fun opening!;)
Elvis fan, thank you for sharing your story.
I am so sorry to hear about your beloved husband. That is so tragic.
However, it is wonderful to hear that you have turned the corner and are pulling yourself out of a depression. That cannot be easy, but you are correct that your husband would surely want you to continue to live life to the fullest.
You seem like such a strong woman. My warmest thoughts and prayers are with you as you heal, dear.
LMG, I'm so happy you reached a solution with your DD to see your GSs. Whoever said your husband is selfish has not gone through the agonies and urges that quitting smoking cause. Been there, done that and I would never want to go through it again, although today I can say it was worth it. I feel so much better.
Fidosmommy, I'm so sorry to hear about your progressive disease. It must be so hard to have to lug around a machine just to stay alive. Keep strong, my prayers are with you.
I speak Québecois French and when I was in France, even though I could be understood some Parisians laughed at my accent and some of my expressions. In Marseille one very ignorant waiter even made fun of the way I said 'beurre' (butter) in French and pretended he couldn't understand, even though I made the motion of buttering a bread bun. My father, in his Quebec City French, which is impeccable, told him off. My father then turned to me and starting speaking English, the waiter huffed and puffed and refused to serve us after that.
Well, Kate's back to tweeting, the kids must be with her. What's with all the @TLC references. Does she really think that they will notice? I have this nagging notion that she was filming, although I do not believe she went to Paris.
Fidosmommy,I'm sorry to hear about your respiratory problems. I have COPD and it is getting worse too. I cough all the time and I have coughed for 15 years. I think oxygen is in my future too. COPD does not go away and it gets worse over time. My knees are both shot and I walk with a walker because my weight has gone up so much because I can not exercise.So losing weight is very hard especially when you are in the house most days all day long. I would give my right arm to go out and walk. Good luck to all who are trying to lose weight. Try myfitnesspal.com. It's free and you can use it to get on track with how much you eat. Have a great day all.
OT:
My daughter informed me of this groundbreaking news- Taylor Swift has broken up with Harry Styles . 1 AM she had to tell me! 2 month relationship.IMO b/c she is rich ( and she earned that) she is able to jet off to 'romantic getaways' while a regular young person would be dating at restaurants or movies- I think this lifestyle is too fast for a true relationship, with time to get to know one another rather than bask in foreign soils and party with celeb friends
Agree with you, Formerly Duped. Poor girl, she really hasn't had much of a childhood, and what chance does any relationship really have, under the glare of the media spotlight? She's had many intense "love" interests, in such a short period of time. If she weren't an industry darling, I suspect she might be slammed for that. On the one hand, it's no one's business but Taylor Swift's, but on the other hand, she makes it her fan's business with the songs she writes...
I wanted to weigh in on the smoking issue... I quit 19yrs ago the day I found out I was pregnant with my ds and was able to not smoke for 13yrs no problem (ex-hubby hated it!!) Fast forward 13yrs a divorce and because he hated it and I was in a place where I wanted to do what I wanted I started again ya know stress lol Anyway long story short I would love to quit have tried but it's incredibly hard (at 43 I refuse to get pregnant again as motivation lol) my hubby now also hates it and living in Canada I too smoke outside now that's dedication ;)
LMG I understand your DH not being able to despite everything it seriously has got to be a personal choice or it just won't happen...
They broke up already?? She just broke up with somebody!
That's a shame.
Formally Duped that's a wonderful point about the relationships moving quickly because of the money and face-paced lifestyle.
I wonder if she is the type of gal who would do better dating somebody not in the public eye? Some of the most stable, long-lasting relationships in the business in the business are the ones where the celebrity has a spouse who is not famous.
Improbable Dreams, I absolutely agree that it is harder to have a long-lasting relationship when you are that young and constantly in the public eye.
But there are many celebs who do it. I couldn't tell you the first thing about Adele's relationship. I am sure it is hard, but possible if both people want to make it work.
The thing is, I do respectfully feel that Taylor adds to the media focus on it by writing about each and every relationship and making it a "guess who" type of game, and also by moving into new relationships so quickly.
Again, it is completely her business and she should date as she pleases, as long as she is not hurting anybody. But I'm not always sure her behavior is that of someone who wants to keep everything completely private.
Nancy, I know this sounds crazy, but I quit smoking in 1 session of hypnosis. I went in there completely disbelieving that it would work, having smoked for 50 years with only one 14 month period without nicotine.I thought that I wouldn't be suggestible, and I didn't want to quit anyway, but was smoking a carton a week and knew I should.
I was also freezing my butt off (no pun intended) in the Canadian winter, having to smoke outside.
The one session did the job and I have been smoke free for over 3 years.It was expensive ($500)but came with a guarantee that if I ever started again, my hypnosis after that would be free until I was truly over it.I was spending that much on cigarettes in a 3 month period anyway!
If yuo are anywhere near Burlington Ontario check out the hypnosis centre there.
Thank you I am in Alberta but it is definatly worth looking into I am sure there is something like that in my area...
I would love to quit but life always seems to get in the way and there is always tomorrow :)
I just wanted to share that it is hard and people saying just quit don't you know it can kill you isn't the answer. I know it's bad for me I know I smell like smoke and I know I need to quit there is just no magic bullet.
Ok, house...a fallen light fixture when no1 was around?Glad no1 was standing below it, but I can't keep up w repairs! http://t.co/7TMsLJUE
Holy crap, repairs? She probably didn't screw the globe back on properly when she changed the light bulb? IF she was the one that changed it, which I doubt. She makes herself sound so helpless, although it's mostly clueless.
It's not funny. If you can't keep up with repairs, it's time to downsize. It's dangerous.
Kate in France, I can just see her with her arrogance, controlling the world attitude among the French.
Speaking of brussel sprouts. This kind of gross but it is a vivid memory to this day and one reason I could never eat them. In elementary school, back in the day, if you bought your lunch you were required to eat every bite. The teacher made very sure of that. Each day there was usually two choices and you didn't get to ask for this or that, the plates were made and you took one. On this particular day when my friend was forced to pick the one with brussel sprouts, which she hated, she had to eat all 6 of them. About 30 minutes later, back in class, they were all on the floor along with the rest of her lunch. 6 whole little brussel sprouts that she swallowed whole to keep from getting in trouble. I felt so sorry for her and I can't stand the sight of them today.
LMG, you hang in there. I think of you often and hope things will change and you get to have those little guys for sleep overs with hot cocoa and a trip to their favorite park.
Lots of comments to still read but....
LMG...oh, I just want to hog your hurt away. I'm glad, though, that you are at peace for now with the compromise. Was just sad about the cocoa and bed stuff. I may have missed it but...is hubby adamant about NOT going outside to smoke? Tell him, from me, it gets easier and easier and, before you know it, he can't imagine smoking IN the home, car, etc. Worth a try!! : )
Dwindle....LOVED your DD story and her "don't know! I'll check tomorrow.".
Bahahahahahahahahaha!!! Aren't little kids just adorable? Well, EXCEPT 8 year olds who say dumb crap like 'hair pain' instead of airplane! My 3 year old GS apparently has a far superior vocab than the G8.... If Kreider is to be believed.
: /
Speaking of Kreider....maybe this has already been posted but....I'm also thinking that maybe the reason she has dropped hints in the past about how much her kids (8 year old boy!! Uh huh ) DREAM about going to Paris is because she's known for a long time that they would be filming in France over Xmas and...because its not exactly a kid type of destination...she figures she won't get bashed about going there for her own selfish desires if she can come back with how it was the KIDS who wanted to go there soooo badly...not her...you know, anything for my precious darlings, I'm selfless, etc, etc, lie, lie, LIE!!!
The mere thought of that fame ho maybe getting her ugly mug back on teee veee totally nauseates me. : (
Will she EVER go away???
While I couldn't sleep last night, I watched the first two Biggest Loser shows. (4 hours minus commercials)
They are handling the children very gently. They won't be on the campus full time. They are not near the training.
They training seemed harsher this season. More yelling and increased "humiliation".
There are some good story lines, so I will be following them faithfully.
Anyone see the "50 Shades" girl on Bachelor?
Admin.....35:
Well if I had just read a few more posts I would have seen yours!! EXACTLY what I was thinking. It makes total sense in every way. Especially about her whipping boy!!
My goodness!
Someone could have been hurt in Kate's house! Thank Gd no one was.
Yes, it is definitely not a joke to put on twitter about how she just can't keep up with this house. She wanted that house, she has it. It's here responsibility to keep it a safe place for all of them.
Admin.....35:
It was worth saying again!
If you think about it, she is really, really despicable, if our guess is right. That means that she only mentioned France to justify filming, not because she was sincerely discussing the kids' interests. What a tool.
What was the purpose of the tweet?It reminds me of when she took pictures of the 'trashed' nursery, broken glass etc. What does Kate think this will accomplish? A visit from the Smiths to do all her repairs?
A generic thank you for all the tweetie gifts too...
Working Woman, what does your sister think of TS latest break-up/romance, being a big fan? I know it's not my business,just TS is BIG in our house !
She always blabs on and on about how the kids loved filming. What she thinks goes over our heads is how she almost always follows it up by saying "They always ask when we are traveling again."
Of course they love filming - they associate it with traveling to exotic places that most kids their age only dream of seeing! They don't love it because it has helped their public speaking skills, or whatever the excuse that she and Terri Irwin used on that one Australia episode.
Doesn't she even consider that taking her kids on so many free vacations could spoil them, and take away any appreciation or fascination they have with traveling? Most people look forward to going to these places with their husbands, their children, their children's children! Does she want her kids to have seen it all by their teenage years?
Kate has been to Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, all around the country in an RV.... and she still believes that Kiwis are birds without arms and that everyone wishes to see her "sediments" all over the twitter universe.
So clearly, their trips haven't been THAT educationalish.
the reason she has dropped hints in the past about how much her kids .... DREAM about going to Paris is because she's known for a long time that they would be filming in France over Xmas
Bingo. She always forecasts. Remember how just out of the blue she said that she'd always wanted to be on DWTS?
And everyone was like huh? What? You're not athletic or artistic in the least. Why would you want to do DWTS?
Made no sense, unless she already knew she was going to do it.
And then, voila! There she was...in her required "modest" outfit, dancing with Tony, who had no idea how to best teach her (anything).
Elvis Fan, good for you! Your post really touched me and I hope you are successful in your weight loss plan. You have dealt with so much already, I hope going to the gym and exercising makes you feel better in lots of ways!
@ClaireYunae crazy the stuff that makes people think of me, huh? A horrible fridge and who comes to mind??? ME! Lol!
View conversation
Wow. ONE tweeter mentions that she was cleaning a dirty fridge and that it made her think about that episode where Kate was cleaning out the moldy fridge in the new house (you know, when Kate went on and on and ON about how disgusting it was, with no consideration that it could be humiliating to the prior owners of the house to have this aired on national television)...and Kate turns that into people in general thinking of her all the time as a result of crazy little things like that.
Kate, most people are tending to their own lives, their own duties, and their own children and do not "think" of you. You are not the only person who ever had to clean a dirty fridge.
Secondly, I would be creeped out if perfect strangers were reminded of me and my family over mundane activities like cleaning a fridge.
Maybe people also think of her when they see a woman screaming at her husband, when they see someone ignoring their puppy, or when they hear the phrase "She's ruined!"
I would think of Kate in all of those instances. Not in a good way.
#mindofanarcissistmustbeascaryplace
LOL, and good point(s)!
@XXXXXXXX @kateplusmy8 odd it broke that way when it fell on a thick rug? Not a lot of shattered pieces on hardwood floor.
@XXXXXXX @Kateplusmy8 Or, all the shrieking & squealing, goes on in the orphanage, cause glass to explode.
@XXXXXX @Kateplusmy8 I mean seriously, who stops to take a photo of something like that? First instinct is where is the dust pan, right?
NT, let me second your recommendation of My Fitness Pal. I have been using it for 2.5 months and I have lost 20 pounds. It is really easy to use and really taught me a lot about how many calories we consume and don't think about. If you have a smart phone, the app is even easier to use because you can use the barcode scanner on just about anything to show calories and portion sizes.
I use MYP in conjunction with a pedometer app (striiv) and the two sync up. So if I exercise I get to eat more calories. It is a really neat system and free!
I am sorry to hear about those with COPD and other ailments requiring oxygen. Hubby's best friend has COPD due to years of smoking. When he was on his way to the hospital (in a cab!) he made the cab driver stop at 7-11 so he could buy smokes. By the time he got to the hospital he had passed out. He will be on oxygen for the rest of his life. It is hard for him, but we are happy he is HERE with us!
Don't know why I am such a chatty cathy today. ;)
It appears I have a lot of reading to do here as I have been pre-occupied with a family emergency this past week. When I read about the various stories regarding Italy and France—I was reminded of a recent Rick Steves’ podcast. He had a guest who wrote a book about French behavior. The author noted that Americans are often frowned upon by the French for their happy demeanor (e.g., Wow—look at the Eiffel Tower!), and almost look upon us as unintelligent/slow. He said that his fellow Frenchmen (and women) took pride in complaining as, if they pointed out what was wrong with things, it made them seem intelligent.
Though I took French in high school and college, I recently took a refresher course at a local college to help me better communicate when we go back to Europe. When I discussed with our instructor how strange it seemed to see the people in France look so serious all the time, I was told it was their culture. The happy American is apparently seen as uncouth and too “familiar” if smiling at them or trying to be friendly by saying hello—not knowing them. (I must admit, it has embarrassed me to see other Americans act like they own the place and talk loudly while guests in other countries. At least, in the various countries we visited, showing we tried to speak the language of that particular country, went a long way as the locals appreciated our efforts.)
Btw, Admin, your suggestion of Evernote will keep me busy until further notice! Wow, what a find! Also, have you visited Cefalu? What a great place. How blessed you are to have roots in such an amazing country.
May I add a message to LMG? Just know, along with many others, I wish you and your family total restoration, peace, and love—in His name!
California Suzy, I hope everything is okay with your family and that things are working themselves out!
We have missed you.
It's funny, isn't it, how we form impressions about other people by the things they post on a public blog? For good and bad, just a few words here and there can cement an image in someone else's mind. I've been thinking about that this morning, especially after reading last night's postings....and I hope you'll indulge me as I express a few of those thoughts aloud.
I'm sometimes overwhelmed with the kindnesses extended here, and the openness with which we approach new blog visitors. It's remarkable, really, this generosity of spirit. And so rare, the comfort level we seem to have created. As for myself, I don't typically post personal stuff. I have other outlets for that, but when I come across a celebratory post, I cheer for the person who wrote it. Not in so many words, but I throw them a ticker-tape parade in my mind. :) And when someone is suffering, I send out good thoughts and prayers. I sense that's not uncommon here, which is --aside from the child advocacy concerns --why I appreciate this blog.
Group HOG!! :)
Does suddenly including TLC in her tweets and "never say never" with added wink now mean their on-again-off-again relationship is back on? I'm thinking yes, due to the lack of decent programming TLC has had recently.
And I wonder whose head will be bitten off for that broken light fixture. Because, you know, nothing is ever Kate's fault.
Before she makes another batch of yogurt or granola, she needs to sit her butt down at her desk and pen INDIVIDUAL thank you notes to EACH AND EVERY tweetie who so much as sent her a box of chocolates for Christmas. It is TWO WEEKS since Christmas, it's already RUDE, but better late than never.
If she cannot do that, she needs to issue a statement asking people NOT to send gifts. One little thank you on twitter to everyone is not okay, is rude, is pathetic.
And SHAME on her for going on two vacations in the span of six months and NOT telling people to send each and every gift meant for her and the kids to real NEEDY kids in charity.
She is an abomination, she really is.
You're right, Admin. She IS an abomination.
I think TLC knows that and didn't film her either. Why would they take 9 G's and a full crew all the way to Paris? The euro trounces the dollar routinely, there's a language barrier, definitely a cultural barrier, etc. Kids might like the Eiffel Tower for a few minutes, but other than Disneyland, Paris is not really a city that would appeal to kids as they don't really care about art museums, architecture, fine food, etc. Can you imagine them all climbing the 284 steps to the top of the Arc d'Triomphe? I can't. I think the @TLC was a dig or grifting.
California Suzy, I hope your family is OK, and Joy, hope the dog is too. Have a good day/week, everyone.
For Bearswife:
Cottage Cheese Strudel
2 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp salt
3 tbls oil or melted Crisco
1/2 cup lukewarm water
1 egg beaten
Place flour and salt in bowl. Ad beaten egg and shortening (oi). Stir while gradually adding water to make a soft dough. Knead dough for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth. form into a ball and place in an ungreased bowl. Cover tightly with aluminum foil to make it air tight. Rest the dough in a warm place for 2 hours or more.
When dough is ready, spread clean tablecloth over kiten table, dusting with flour. Put dough in center and roll out then pull out until tissue thin. When all pulled out cut off htick edges and let dry a little while for flakiness.
Cottage cheese filling
1 lb cottage cheese
2 eggs
3/4 cup sugar
Grated lemon grind
raisins (optional)
3 tbls butter
2 tbls bread crumbs
Mix cottage cheese, egg yolks, sugar, lemon rind and buttered bread crumbs. Beat egg whites until stiff. Fold in.
Spread cheese filling over rolled dough. Add raisins if desired. Roll dough to end of filling.
Place strudel in weel breased pan and bake in 350 degree F oven until slightly brown. About 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on oven/alititude etc.
Good Luck.
That's my Great Aunt Rosie's and Gram's recipe. It is a strudel to die for. Not healthly, but so very, very good. Makes a meal, desert, snack with a cup of coffee. Heck, whenever!
What is she doing, especially now that the kids are back in school, that could possibly preclude her sitting down to write those thank-you notes? Priorities...
But to the larger point, I agree with everyone who's said she should absolutely (and repeatedly!!) tell her "tweeties" to send their gifts to charities, as a gesture of goodwill toward those who are truly needy.
Oops - WELL greased pan not weel greased pan. Mouth was watering as typing :)
Anyone see the "50 Shades" girl on Bachelor?
--------------------------
Yes, and then she was surprised that she didn't get a rose. What a nutcase. Where do they find these people, and how dumb are they? The bachelor is an All-American, clean-cut guy and all you do is whip out a gray tie, talk about being spanked and tied up, and then you wonder why you didn't make it to the next episode?
and Kate turns that into people in general thinking of her all the time as a result of crazy little things like that.
******
I thought about Kate this morning when Mr. Bichon had diarrhea on the laundry room rug. So, that's bad enough and then he stepped and dragged his tail in it. THEN, I picked him up and put him in the utility sink and the poop is smeared on the sink. THEN I though nah, he's a mess, he's got to go into the tub for a good rinse and I picked him up, got poop on my sweatshirt and on the wall.
Oh, I was losing it because I was in the middle of prepping dinner (sometimes I prep everything first thing in the day so dinner and clean up is a breeze later), prepping the garage for a new door to be installed and trying to get myself together for the day.
BUT, I never once yanked my dog, yelled at my dog (said a few choice swear words!), threw him in the tub or anywhere. No way.
I cleaned him up and wrapped him in a towel, then put him in his doggie bed and went about cleaning up the poop trail. And that's a dog! I can not imagine getting physical with a dog, let alone a child.
So, I too thought of Kate this morning when all poop was breaking loose (sorry for the pun) and I did the OPPOSITE.
THANK GOD FOR BISSEL CLEANERS!
Place strudel in weel breased pan and bake in 350 degree F oven until slightly brown.
I was just about to ask if a weel breased pan is something that needs to be ordered from France.
The coddling of today's society is mind boggling. Co dependency thrives!
&&&
Compassion isn't the same as coddling.
If someone is depressed and gaining weight, I can understand that and be sympathetic, while at the same time being supportive of them getting professional help. If that's coddling so be it. This is not the same as making excuses for someone who is just being lazy, as you say all fat people are. There are REAL disorders both mental and physical that directly cause weight gain.
I think one of the most moving stories on The Biggest Loser was that of Abby Rike, whose husband, infant son, and 5 year old daughter were killed in a car accident. She had stayed home that day because she was sick. Her entire family was wiped out. Her baby was EIGHTEEN DAYS OLD. Yes, she turned to food. She was not lazy. She was a woman who had lost her entire LIFE. She was terribly depressed and sought comfort in food. To not have compassion for this woman and to put the label lazy on her and move on, just astounds me.
Abby was a high school teacher, by the way. Taught drama for 13 years. Drama teachers are usually the ones rehearsing until 7 pm at night. Not exactly a profession that allows for laziness. When that happened to her the community was devastated for her. She was described as loyal, HARD WORKING and a favorite of students.
There was an article in our local newspaper (Gosselin hometown) about a 24 yr old woman who has been dealing with cancer. She has been through so much. She was just released from the hospital Friday and she felt so good she went out to eat with her girlfriends at a local restaurant. She mentioned that they saw Jon Gosselin there and she had her picture taken with him. It was just a short 2 sentence note but it apparently meant something to her to even mention it.
Dmasy, I sometimes catch a few clips odd the Bachelor on The Soup with Kevin MC Hale on E! It is good for some laughs. Donna Kauffman is a writer and on her blog she has hilarious snarky recaps of The Bachelor, so yes I feel I know Fifty Shades Girl! Bring on the cray-cray, as Donna says. Instead of a drinking game, she suggests eating a Hershey Kiss after each cliche bachelor bit of dialogue, like some reference to taking this journey together.
I don't want to spoil things by actually watching the show, instead I can read about Kinda Slutty Girl and Wedding Dress Girl and Quirky Engineer Sticky Note Girl and Ford Model Girl and Girl Next Door and First Rose Girl and so on......
With this romantic train wreck now boarding, and new season of Honey Boo Boo, and all the other new stuff coming on, why would anyone be interested in a bunch of average kids and their grouchy gestational carrier?
I bet she knocked it of while flying her broom!
We were stationed in Germany twice and travelled extensively through Europe. We never had a problem communicating with anyone. We found that if you tried to speak with them in their native language they would normally switch to English because it was easier for them (most are taught English in schools from an early age). When we were first stationed there we were basically told not to dress like "shit-kicker Joe" and to try and blend a bit and not intentionally stand out as Americans. This was due to the fact that when we were first stationed there the Red Army Faction (Baader-Meinhof) were going strong and targeting anything American.
"Coddling" and "co-dependent," bah humbug! Who among us has the right (the wisdom) to judge anyone else's situation, unless (like Kate or other reality show participants) their life is splayed open for all the world to see?
As for me, I'd rather give 'em the benefit of the doubt. Much better to have a tendency toward obesity, I think, than to be afflicted with a heart that's three sizes too small.
Butterfly - Just catching up from last night's posts. Italy is near and dear to my heart. My DD did study in Rome as an art history major and now makes Italy her home. So many locals showed me so much kindness that it's hard to hear others had a bad experience.
Berks Resident - I volunteer to be your tour guide anytime!
Finally, still on the topic of traveling abroad and language barriers. I try to imagine someone coming to the U.S. from Italy or France and then complaining that no one would speak to them in their native language. I know English is much more widely spoken but it's unfair to expect everyone to understand you. In the big cities, hotels and restaurants usually have people who speak English. But travel off the beaten path and you need to know at least a little of the local language. Just my 2 cents.
Hey Dutch Tulip. Watch it with the broom comments. It's a gr8 way to travel :)
Thank you Kiwi! I will be making this on the weekend, as soon as I get my weel breased pan shipped to me from former Yugoslavia!
***************************
Aah, but if she wrote individual thank you notes to each person, that would not make it known to the world how ADORED she is and how many people love her enough to send her Christmas gifts.
I don't know how she's not embarrassed. Does she think it is right that her family that already lives a life of luxery receives all of these gifts and surprises from perfect strangers? She is okay with people she has never seen face-to-face spending their hard-earned money on her and her children, when others are living in poverty?
Her kids are likely going to come to expect this. What are they going to do when this stops, and the strangers stop sending them surprises?
Does she EVER think about the broader implications of her greediness?
Sorry SeeSaw ;)
Didn't mean to lump all the witches together, ofcourse there are good witches...and then you have Kate, a special catogory all on her own
Forget the needy kids that could use those toys more, I am just as concerned too about what this is doing to the Gosselin kids. How will they feel when they wake up one Christmas morning and the gifts stop. She is awful.
I guess she feels the gravy train ride will never be over -- she will always have fans to send her free stuff and to allow her to grift.
Honestly, I am a bit impressed that, a year and a half from when her show was canceled after hanging on by a thread for several months, she still even has the number of fans she has. Fans who are devoted enough to send her and the kids holiday gifts.
I mean "impressed" in a negative way, of course.
Bearswife - You are quite the snot today :) LOL Make sure when you order that weel breased pan you order it from Slovenia. Hmmph. Oh, no special receptacle needed.
She sucks!
Hey, Admin...does her Christmas greediness fall under Worst of 2012 or first F-up of 2013????
If that bulk mail, breezy "thank you" was all she planned to send, why couldn't she have found the few seconds to send it out days ago?
So little effort involved. Why wait weeks?
Okay, house....a fallen light fixture when no1 was around? Glad no1 was standing below it, but I can't keep up w repairs!
=====
What exactly does that mean? How do you know when a light fixture is going to fall? Is there a shedding time like trees in autumn?
Didn't she already write a mass "thank you" messsage on her twitter page to everyone who sent her gifts, a couple of weeks ago maybe? I thought for certain that she did.
Did she get more free sh*t since then, or does she just have a need to remind everyone yet again how adored she is?
heather here ...
Just because she is sending a thank you tweet, doesn't mean she received a ton of free shit.
For all we know, one fan could've sent her a box of cookies that ended up in the trash.
The mass tweet thank you makes it *seem* like she got a ton of stuff. Hell, she could tweet it even if she didn't get anything. Who would know??
Working Woman the first tweet was to remind everyone that gifts were due ASAP. I'm sure her tweetie fans snapped to it and sent a bunch of stuff that she now has to thank them for. Heavy sigh. How exhausting for her.
@Working Woman Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, I've been through a lot in my life. I've been told since the age of 18 how "strong" I am, and for the most part that's true. However, when I lost my husband, I felt anything but. It truly almost did me in. We never "get over" losing a loved one, we learn to live through it. You're a very compasionate caring person, and I really love your posts. So glad you're here!
@Bearswife Thank you hon for your kind words as well. Congrats on your weight loss, and keep going, girl! You can do it! :)
Good luck to all of you working on weight loss. Let's make 2013 our year!
I really don't know if Kate actually went to France. I tend to think she wants us to believe she has. I think the French would chew her up and spit her out...
Count me among those who don't think she/kids got all that much from fans.
I hope that no one spent alot of time, money & energy sending cards & gifts to that family- because that was one heck of an anticlimactic thank you.
Note to Katie's sheeple- next year save your money. Just tweet her a Merry Christmas/New Year greeting. That way, the amount of consideration you put into it will match the impersonal thank you she sends back to you.
Yes. She is awful. I imagine when the gifts stop coming in for the kids (if they haven't already) she'll tell them "They don't care about YOU anymore. You're all mediocre. But look! Milo send ME a new Dyson vac."
My DD went to the Isle of Capri 2 summers ago. Adored it. Her SIL's mom rented a villa for a month to celebrate her 60th B-Day and invited extended family to join her for a couple of weeks.
To those of you starting on WW online and using other apps to keep track of your weight and exercise, good luck!
I promised my Beardie that we'll do our walks almost every day. We both need it. And, I'm going to hit my stairclimber a whole lot more. Weird, but I love that thing.
Also, to anyone who has not got the flu shot yet, go get it! The supply is getting low in many areas, as the number of cases explodes.
Just saw an area near KK in PA had such a spike in flu cases, that a hospital (Lehigh) set up an overflow tent. They had hundreds of cases coming in.. per day.
So, bear those arms and get stuck!
Signed,
Your Mother
I'm probably going to sound out of the loop here, but that's fine.
This France trip...that's a joke here right? I mean reality television might pay well but come on she's not working she'sn ot bringing in income. She complains about how expensive next to nothing is...am I really to believe she just up and rooted these kids to France for a week before going back to school...and back to whatever the heck she does. Mundane paperwork? She must be organizing those Bible quotes she taped up all over the house because without income and a job that requires paperwork I don't see where she's getting it. That or her "by cans" cookbook recipes that she's too OCD to not stop organizing so it will be perfect-ish for the few fans who are salivating to buy it.
@Dwindle, you think you could go ahead and erase my message to you? I don't think you'll be needing it anyway.
Feel better!
I was just mothering all here to get flu shots. Don't forget some tea with honey and lemon.
BTW, DH set up our Roku in no time. We're almost done watching season 1 of Downton Abbey. Loving it and Maggie Smith is a gem in it!
We're going to get accustomed to the Roku and learn all it has to offer, then we'll see how much we can slash our cable bill by.
2013 is the year of savings (NOT KK's Coupon Cabin savingsish. We're not going to put in a pool in lieu of joining our community one), recycling, fixing, purging, donating and adding new things only if really needed or desperately wanted.
So...here's a Kate sighting for you. I had to go to Lowe's to pick up something for my dh. After shopping in the store I pop into my vehicle and get ready to pull out when I look to my right and there is Kate herself parked NEXT to me in all her glory on her PINK iPhone, animatedly talking on it, her hand with her freshly manicured nails flying about. She was yelling at someone. This was around 2:10pm (just 20 or so minutes ago). She is so unaware of how she looks in public. She can dress nice and do her hair (in a ponytail) and drive her fancy little TT sports car, but she looked like a maniac while she's talking to whomever she was on the phone.
Thought I'd share and make the sheeple jealous. And no, I didn't get a picture because she still deserves a tiny bit of privacy, even though she doesn't allow her children any.
Wow, talk about parental alienation. Dinah Lohan, Lindsey's BFF, uh, I mean mom is doing a boo hoo tour a la Kate, alleging beatings and rape by her ex and her kids' father.
She and Kate should share notes.
""I need to make the world aware that Lindsay is messed up because her father is messed up," Dina told the NY Daily News on Monday in an explosive new interview in which she alleged physical abuse and rape by Michael."
Oh, Dina, go party all night with your addicted daughter, you frickin' enabler, user and exploiter. Even if the allegations are true, do you think Lindsey needs this heaped on her crapfest of a life?
Maybe Dina is trying to deflect from Lindsey's latest courtroom drama, should she decide to actually show up.
Huh? Why does the world need to know about Lindsay's daddy issues? Um, no, Dina, a therapist needs to know and that's it. Why is it I can so picture Kate doing a similar tour when the kids are grown.
Is Kate as sickly skinny as she looked in recent photos?
Kate and the blanket thank you tweets...
Several years ago, my daughter was enamored with a singer in a well-known band. He had a young daughter. His daughter and mine would hang around backstage together at shows. On the singer's daughter's birthday, my daughter wanted to send her a gift. She knew exactly what she wanted to buy for her. She was insistent that she wanted to buy this particular gift. Not only did my daughter get a hand-written (in childish scribble) note via snail mail, but her mother sent me an e-mail and called me to let me know how much her daughter enjoyed the gift.
It's all in how you raise them.
This is how it *should* go-- "Some very caring and kind fans have sent your gifts, lucky you. Now, if you want a gift, you must, must hand write a thank you letter to each and every one of them, or else you will be donating every single gift to a child who needs it"
Wonderful story. That's the way it should be.
I've talked about my wealthy BIL and his family. His kids write thank you snail mail (or mom did before they could) for just about every single gift we've ever given them.
That's how you raise 'em up right.
@Berks Why is it so easy to envision her doing just that? LOL What a sight that must have been.
Wonder what's got her so worked up? Maybe she's having a hard time unloading the kids on Jon...
I could only see her from the shoulders up and she was wearing dark clothing. Her hair was back in a ponytail, but you didn't see any roots (recently done?). What caught my eye were the fingernails on the hand holding her phone (she was to the right of me) and the other one flapping around (so typical). I really hope that was her angry face because it it wasn't she looks bad.
Tucker, 164, asked..."Is Kate as sickly skinny as she looked in recent photos?"
Thanks for the info. auntie Ann, I agree with your reply about who she was reaming out.Or maybe her "French receptacle" is malfunctioning and Lowes doesn't know how to help her... Berks, that was funny the way you described it. Did she tear out of her parking space or did you leave first?
Berks Neighbor, you poor dear. You realize you will be accused of "stalking" her now, right? ;)
Hmm, she while I agree that Kate does not look at her healthiest and looks worn down in recent pictures, I'm not sure I would describe as sickly thin.
She is a thin woman, absolutely, and it does appear to be a "forced" type of thin. But I don't think she's emaciated, not as much as you would think she would be with her running several miles a day and eating barely anything. I don't even know how much of that I buy.
Some of her tweets have posted VERY negative ideas about food and diet behaviors and portion control, but I was never personally convinced that she truly sufferrs from a true eating disorder.
Of course, I don't know her and am not a diagnostician in any way, shape, or form, so I wouldn't know anyway. But, the way she talks about it sometime, it seems to me to be more for attention: like, look at me and how little I eat and how much willpower I have and how healthy I am and hot my body is now!
When you are truly suffering from an eating disorder, there is generally a lot of shame surrounding it. Depending on the nature of the disorder, you are either completely in denial so you don't say anything that would lead others to believe you are not well, or you are deeply ashamed so you are very limited to what you say about your eating behaviors.
I am sure she is restrictive with what she eats, but I also would bet that some of it is for attention and so people oggle over how good she looks and how much will-power she has.
When my mom was sick with anorexia and restricting herself severely, she couldn't do 5 minutes of cardio, that's how weak she was. Because that's what happens when you are truly not giving your body enough, ever Kate claims to run several miles a day. If that's really happening, she's not living off of measley salads all of the time, like she has said she does. Something doesn't add up, in my opinion.
Whatever the situation is, I do hope she is taking care of herself and can one day see that beauty comes from within and is not determined by what the scale says.
We have a house rule.. If the gift is a toy, it is not played with until a thank you note is written, and not in e-mail form, but a signed note. If it's clothing, it is not worn until a note is written. If it's a gift card, it is not used until a note is written. That's an assurance that a note will be written for each and every gift!
Many times the kids have hand-made their thank you notes with stickers and markers and scrap-booking/crafts supplies. They can personalize them this way and it's a great rainy day activity. When they need a thank-you note, they are there, just ready to be written.
She was still parked there as I left. I didn't stalk cuz I was there first. When I pulled in there was a van next to me. When I left she was there. She was in the first parking spot closest to the exit.
She is STALKING me *haha*. I've seen her following me at Target she was perusing razors and then she was at Boscov's (in the parking lot) a couple of months ago. I saw her pull out after me on Van Reed. She needs to stop following me. Stalk much, Kate?
*store exit* not the parking lot exit.
Kate is a grump, but Jon did a nice thing for a cancer patient:
She felt so well that on Friday she went to meet some friends for lunch at Chick-fil-A in the Broadcasting Square Shopping Center, Spring Township, where she ran into former reality television star Jon Gosselin.
The two took a photo together and she posted it to her Facebook page.
I can't believe she claims she can't keep up with repairs just because a light fixture fell. It's probably one that she replaced herself. I'm wondering if this is the first hint of finding a smaller less expensive home??? One with less repairs to keep up with. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
Naw....
I can't believe she claims she can't keep up with repairs just because a light fixture fell. It's probably one that she replaced herself. I'm wondering if this is the first hint of finding a smaller less expensive home???
***********************
Could be, NT, could be.
The thing is, there was a time when she was always away traveling and was rarely home. Back then I could see why it would have be difficult to keep up with repairs for such a big house.
But now, she is home much more often and has 8 children who can help her make sure everything is functioning as it should. It shouldn't be that difficult to keep up with it - as soon as something seems damaged or like it could cause trouble, she could get it looked at right away, and that's that.
A smaller house would be easier, absolutely, but a bigger house naturally comes with more responsibility, as she should have known back in 2008 when she bought it. And, it requires work, but it is possible to stay on top of needed repairs even when you have a large house, many single or widowed parents live in huge houses and they manage it.
Jon looks so natural, genuine, non-posed. I do believe he is a good man, I can't help it. I have no personal interactions or insider knowledge to base that on...it's just how I feel, and I don't even know why.
I think he is a flawed (as we all area) guy, but a humble, relatable, nice guy.
Dmasy - thanks about my barn kitty, she really is a hoot = wouldn't have known what a min-pin was until you and I looked it up - but I gotta say - odd looking creatures - absolutely loveable - but ..... Still cute and I am sure great comfort.
You mean Jon just gladly took a photo with a (battling cancer) fan and didn't compare notes about XYZ illness/hospitalization?
What is the DEAL??
ok - old topic - please scroll by....
Smoking in Ontario - Not in business place, eating places, patios, public parks, beaches (well in summer you know) - just about everywhere it is banned - even talking about ban in cars with children in it.
Ok, confession, I smoke - mostly outside - I don't mind the bans, I can live with it if they can live without my business (just the patios folks, just the patios)- this is just a hard one...
Lilly, when their ears are docked they look just like Honey-I-shrunk-the-doberman dogs. 2 of ours are the smartest dogs I have ever owned. The other sweetie is a butterfly brain who is always one leap behind the others. We love them!
Illinois is smoke-free in public places. Even bars and casinos. I don't smoke but I have always thought it might be unfair to a business owner (like a bar) to lose customers due to the ban.
I avoid second hand smoke whenever I can. When I choose to be where smokers are allowed (mostly out-of-state casinos), I have to acknowledge that I am in shared space with their habit.
I don't like cigarette smoke smell. But, neither do I like laws that restrict personal freedom.
...and he didn't bulk, turn to the person with him and say, "But this wasn't part of it."
Berks, I hope you had your Boobyguard demand to see Kate's phone and delete any and all photos of you!
Or, did you ask your Boobyguard and pout when he refused to do so?
Dwindle....sorry to hear you are not feeling well. : (
I could bring you chicken soup if you want!!!
Get better soon. HOGS!
About the Kate sighting....thanks for posting! Question for the locals: have you ever seen or heard about Kreider being 'told off', getting dirty looks, etc? I ask just because there have been so many reports about how unliked she is there and I was wondering how she was treated. You know like how Camilla Parker Bowles was pelted with bakery items when her affair with Prince Charles went public!! Now THAT would be so funny with Kreider!! Organic, of course!! : )
It's also nice to see Jon at a normal restaurant like a normal guy. Cost of meal was probably 5 bucks. It always annoyed me the way the kids' money was blown at places like Nobu and Fig and Olive. Why?
