Jodie Foster's Golden Globe speech: 'The fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds'

The actress's acceptance of her Lifetime Achievement Award was a little streaming consciousness, but she talked about reality shows, and her lust for privacy.

"You know, you guys might be surprised, but I am not Honey Boo Boo Child. No, I’m sorry, that’s just not me. It never was and it never will be. Please don’t cry because my reality show would be so boring. I would have to make out with Marion Cotillard or I’d have to spank Daniel Craig’s bottom just to stay on the air. It’s not bad work if you can get it, though. But seriously, if you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you’d had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you too might value privacy above all else. Privacy. Someday, in the future, people will look back and remember how beautiful it once was. I have given everything up there from the time that I was 3-years-old. That’s reality-show enough, don’t you think?"
Last August, Jodie Foster released some scathing comments about child stardom, calling it the "cruelty of a life lived as a moving target" and said you have to "submerge beneath the foul air and breathe through a straw." Previously, Foster had been fairly polite about being famous.

Another thought on Jodi's speech-- she's got to be one of the best actresses in Hollywood. What a career! And yet, she's so humble that with all of her star power, she just can not imagine that her life would be watchable. It goes to the narcissistic mind set of just about every person who is in reality tv. They think they are endlessly fascinating. Kate thinks she oh so watchable and heaven forbid, pithy, which she is decidedly not. In fact, I truly think she's dumber than a bag of hammers. And Kate thinks her infantalized kids are utterly fascinating! But really, they're just your garden variety kids with not one of them being exceptional in any way. Sorry, they're lovely, but not exceptional. Not a violin virtuoso among them.
Yup, they are all mediocre. Deal.

&&&&

Tucker hope you don't mind a replay of your great comment in this thread.

That's really the difference between people like Jodi and then the famewhore reality show people isn't it?

Those who think their lives are boring would actually make for great reality shows. And those who think they are interesting usually have terrible reality shows.

Actually, incidentally, Juanita from the Farmer's Wife kept telling the filmmaker how boring she was:

Juanita Buschkoetter says she drove documentary maker David Sutherland "crazy, telling him that no one was going to watch because it was going to be so boring."

Oh, Juanita, you and Jodi both.

Thanks Admin for re-posting my thoughts.
Juanita is something that Kate thinks she's above, and that is humble. Juanita inspired me in ways that Kate can not even fathom.
Hey sheeple.... name ONE time that you saw your Katie scrub a toilet. Just one, that is all....
What mother of 8 children goes practically apoplectic over giving their child a bath? My mother could do it in her sleep and would have never dreamed of handing me over to my dad for bathing/showering when he came home from work. I mean seriously. the film does not lie. Kate shuttered those kids in their room for 50% of the day and beat them if they did not cooperate with the imprisonment.

There were so many things I liked about Juanita and her parenting style. She must have felt so isolated sometimes on the farm, felt so lost in their own little world of cows and pigs. But at bedtime she would talk to the girls about what else was happening in the world, talk to them in an age appropriate manner, at the time I believe they were discussing Oklahoma City. Then she prayed for them. She wanted her girls to know there was a whole other world out there. Sometimes I think people on reality shows just don't even care at all. They don't want to be engaged in their world and with other people. It's their world only.

By the way, Audrey, the oldest, is engaged!

Jodie's speech was interesting, personal and down-to-earth. She looked fantastic too, and REAL.

I have always admired her acting.I think she's a very intelligent, funny and sensitive woman and her sons are lucky to have such a mom.

I love how we have 'met' some very cool people on this blog, Juanita, Megan, Jodie etc. and had some interesting threads about reality shows, child exploitation, names in the news, bullying/tragedies, many more.

Go Jodi Foster! What an exceptional actress and wonderful woman. Humble and modest, she seems to care so much more about surrounding herself with love and support, than with airing her "boring" life for all the public to see. Who do you think has a happier life, her or Kate? One guess.

Based on her speech, Jodi is quirky, funny, talented, and comfortable with who she is. THAT is what gives a person the "It" factor. Not the number of kids she has.

Yes, it is miraculous that Kate had sextuplets, all of whom are thankfully in good health, after she had twins. But that does not make her more special than any other mother. What about my mom, who gave birth to my sister and me three months early and didn't know if we were going to survive at all? How about the women who have miscarriage after miscarriage while trying to get pregnant? How about the women who have one child at a time, drama-free, but work hard every day to provide a happy, fulfilling like for her children?

Those women are all every bit as, if not more, deserving as Kate is.

Kate needs to discover what is special about herself, something that does not involve the fact that she has 8 children.

She also needs to discover and appreciate what is special about her children that does not involve the fact that there are 8 of them.

Amen. Live for you and your own family's needs and do the things that are right for you and the fans will take care of themselves.

I think "I do it for the fans" is just a cop out to do something you really shouldn't be doing, like taking on a role that is too risqué or neglecting your kids.

The sad thing is, whatever Kate "tries on" outside of her 8, count 'em 8 kids, doesn't stick. It's sad that at her age, I don't think she has a real sense of who she is. It's whatever she thinks will work for public consumption.
I think her pregnancy with the tups was a true miracle. It must have been hard, painful and frightening, but it's over. What about moms who have large single birth families. Yes, 6 in you belly is rough, but try being pregnant and bloated and swollen while having babies and toddlers in diapers. Not easy!

And filming your children who clearly are in emotional pain and distress because mommy and daddy are splitting up. But there's Kate, literally telling her sheeple that she'd LOVE fo rher and the kids to entertain you again.
While I'm bitching ;-) I also want to call out the people who enable famewhores like Kate by not speaking up when they clearly know right from wrong. Like Dr. Phil and Dr. Laura. The latter didn't want to speak up about Kate but did go on record calling their antics with HOM "carnival barkers", which I agree with. But what about Dr. Phil, who has said time and again that children should not be born with a job? He's such a suck up hypocrite. If there are any kids that are exploited, it's the G kids. They were and are way to young to "see around corners".

I have no way of knowing but I would be willing to bet my house that Kate was watching the Golden Globe award show last night. I hope she was paying close attention to Jodie Foster's acceptance speech and what she had to say about being a public figure since she was a toddler. It was heartbreaking to hear her speak of how hard it was to FIGHT for a REAL life.

Thank you for posting this, Admin. There were so many very human and moving moments in her speech. She is a person of enormous talent, charisma beauty and grace.

She spoke directly to her mother, saying that she knows that her mother is in there, somewhere (Altzheimers?) and repeated "I love you" three times in the hopes that one would stick.

Her final words were very telling: "...I want to be seen and understood very deeply and not to be so very lonely."

No one knows what her life would have been like if she had never stepped on that first stage. From the tone of her speech, I am guessing that she feels that her life in the arts has come at a very cost.

A cautionary tale for the parents of budding actors and a condemnation of reality shows.

Which is why I just can not get behind June and Honey Boo Boo Child. Just look at Jodie's speech! Honey Boo Boo is part the our zeitgeist and she's what, 6? It's too too much for a young child to bear and I don't think for a minute that HBB doesn't get that she's carrying that show. From the filming to the appearances and meet and greets, it's just too much.
When I saw everyone gawking at her at the hotel pool in CA, I just wanted to cry. It was undignified and I hope that they get that people are laughing at them, not with them. Carnival barking indeed. Step this way folks, come and see...

##################

Absolutely, an incredible talent. However, I have a question, and I know I'll take a hit on this, but I'd love to hear opinions. Jodie, by her own admission, has always longed for privacy. Why then, did she speak about her own sexuality? She even touched on the fact that her being gay was known years ago, "in the stone age." Why bring it up again? Was this really the forum to come out publicly? I'm just not sure that this added anything to an otherwise really heart-felt acceptance speech. I would think that this is the last thing an actor or actress would declare (or even hint at) in a nationally televised program if they have worked so hard to maintain that private aspect of their lives. Why not just keep things as they were...everyone knew she is gay, she had previously thanked her partner at an awards presentation as "my beautiful _____" None of this was a secret. Why now...if she so fiercely protects her privacy?

It almost seemed to me to be a contradiction of a lifetime of wanting and guarding her privacy. Yes, she wanted to thank the special people in her life...her mother, her sons, those who were involved in her acting achievements, but why not thank her former partner privately, since privacy, especially in her relationship with men and women, is what she sought to protect all of her life? She didn't need to demonstrate her courage for coming out...she has nothing to prove to anyone. She obviously is very well respected, as she should be, in the entertainment industry.

"I guess Milo can't understand anyone who does not support child exploitation."

###################

I really think that for Milo, everything is about Kate. Everything. I don't think that the kids enter into this at all. Milo is in love with Kate. Kids are secondary, and therefore she can't understand that kids were exploited. They were just along for the ride. Kate became famous. The end justified the means.

Working Woman said... 25

All This is That, you should absolutely not take a hit on that because that is an excellent point.

I don't think any one of us can speak in regards Jodi's motivations for bringing up her sexuality. Maybe she didn't think of it as potentially disrupting her privacy at all. Rather, maye she just wanted to be open and honest about who she is. She didn't give any specific details about her love life or what she does in private. It's part of who she is.

It was her moment, to say whatever she chose, to people who she considered family. Why she did, I can't say. But she does truly seem to be a woman with the right priorities and I hope she maintains the privacy she believes in.

I think privacy means sharing what you want to share and keeping quiet what you want. It doesn't mean your entire life is secret. The point is Jodie wants to be in control of what she wants to share, not the media. If she is ready to share her sexuality fine but she wants to do it on her terms. I'm proud of what she stands for.

I thought Jodie Fosters speech was great and funny. she got the Cecil BDeMille award, wow!
So, talking about celebs, brings up the topic of a ”humblebrag”. I read some interviews with Harris Wittels, the writer who created the twitter feed that posts the best humble brags. when asked what makes yo a humble brag, he says ” really its a gut feeling. If I read it and feel this vague sense of annoyance by it, it counts.”
So, whenever there is an accusation of humble bragging, you know what it really means? The accuser is annoyed and envious of our mediocre lives! Somehow I find that hilarious.
Yes, it is possible to take care of your pets, and to take care of your family, and to do a good job at your work, and to go to church, and to support local charities, and to still advocate for the rights of children in entertainment, and to do it all without grifting! What a fab group of humble braggers post here!
Originally I did not like this term, now I love it! We can have lots of fun with this.

Many famous people have openly stated their
homosexuality. This is a way for them to put all speculation and even conversation to rest. Once it is publicly "admitted", people drop the subject and only mention it when it is pertinent info. I.e. "Ellen and her wife were seen at a primier showing of WonderFlies in LA"
If Ellen and Portia had not announced their
sexuality, it would still be "buzz", and lots of
"why don't they just admit it already" snark.

I think Jodie just wanted to let what seemed obvious to be openly stated. Just my guess.

There will be no more pets for me, just wonderful memories of those that were. RIP my beautiful little ones. I love you all.

Please, no comments about it. I just wanted to share, and don't really need or want
sympathy notes. Thank you for respecting that.

Hello from Alaska. I am a military wife and I am stuck in the middle of winter with my favorite blog! I have read for a long time (I don't post because by the time I read, most of you are tucked in bed almost ready for the alarm.) But thanks to all of my friends who have kept me company. I have cried with you and prayed for you. I love personal posts. Though I have friends in Alaska, when I first moved here and was alone (from the south, never experienced anything like this), you were my friends. Thank you!!

The sheeple never ceases to amaze me. I love all of God's creatures, some more than others...but geez get a grip. I love hearing the stories of chartiable acts. Restores my faith in humanity. Never considered any of it bragging and it gave me the motivation to go out in the cold and do something for someone who was as lonely as I have been. And seriously, clothes for dogs? So, you gave up a fast food meal to dress up your dog. It is not like you have prevented a country from feeding its children. And to me, (I am not a dog lover) but if you can't be nice to a dog, you probably wouldnt help me when I needed it.

And finally, I have one final word on the tweets from the twit about her home repairs....it sounds like your mcmansion is falling down. Neglect? Children out of control? Lemon of a house? She doesn't sound like can do Kate when she tweets names of home repair stores. If she is really spending all this time "repairing" the house, maybe she should look into who she hires as not a nanny or not a maid because apparently, they are not taking care of her house!

I always find it fascinating that M/J is all about KT's kids and what she is teaching them etc. but you would never know she had 2 of her own.

I watched HBB last night and TLC in their blueprint of how to ruin a perfectly good reality show by having the participants become a parody of themselves was evident throughout. There was nothing even remotely funny and/or entertaining about last night's episode. In fact it was quite disturbing, if anything. They just cannot leave well enough alone. Next thing you know that will decide that June and HBB are the breakout stars and no longer need Sugar Bear or the others - except of course the baby is just precious.

Sadly, I watched the red carpet but not the show as it can go on for a long time. I wish I had though because from what I can tell the female hosts (for the first time?) did a really good job. I did like the other guy, whose humor was so biting, that I thought would be there.

I've always liked Jodie Foster. In addition to the interview last year, I also remember watching one of those TV "Biography" shows on her quite a long time ago. It made a big impression on me because she talked about the movie Little Man Tate that she directed. I forget the name of the little boy who starred in that movie. There was an interview with her where she talked at length about how carefully she treated child actors because of her own experiences as a child star.

I think why she may have broached the subject about her sexual orientation, is that last year at the Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais(who was the host) made some remarks about it. She probably felt it was the perfect forum to do so, being that it was the same event.

Alaska Mama, so glad you finally decided to join us. As for Kate's home repairs, I think she just exaggerates so that everyone will see what a supermom she is. I lived alone in my 2,300 sq.ft. house for 13 years, and only needed a plumber once and I had to hire a truck to clear snow 3 times, because I had things to do and needed to get the car out. Other than that, I shovelled, mowed my lawn, cleaned my lawnmower, used the weedeater, changed toilet chains, tightened faucets, cleaned out my gutters, swept my laneway, etc.

Kate's a wimp. She pretends she's so helpless just for pity. The children are old enough now to help around the house. Do dishes, set the table and make their own beds. If they do not deem themselves entitled like Kate, which after the comment regarding servants, I'm not so sure about.

Yes, when we were growing up we had that same script hanging from the fixtures too! It told my mom when to tell us about her busy day and for one of us to start talking about what cute thing we did/said in school today. It also let us know when it was time to fling a pea at my brother and to be sent to the time-out mat. I think every family needs one of those scripts. Otherwise, how would they ever know what they're doing around that table with all the food on it?

Too bad Kate's script didn't say "Buy regular chairs for kids. Too big for high chairs now".

Not only that, but she says that no one takes them seriously. I wonder what Kate would say about that, since hers was the "realest reality show out there." Either it was doctored (edited) or it wasn't. She can't pick and choose which was and which wasn't.

Deanna appears to be a wannabe. She knows everything about everyone on these shows since she "works in tv." She and Kate are perfect bedfellows. Throw Milo (and the other six sheeple) in there with them and you have enough comic material for a Saturday Night Live skit.

While I imagine Kate's night when maybe like this:

Kate held up a bottle of wine last night and gave her winning speech to her 8 kids about how she's grateful they're still around to help support her and how they should be grateful she's the talent that's given them life.

It'll be as close to the real thing as she will ever get. Either that or she sat on her stupid leather couch surrounded by her wines (and whines) with her special salad watching the globes last night while she and Milo cried tweeting back and forth how unfair it was she wasn't recognized for her talents. She was probably so upset she ate a whole box of bella bars.

I have to wonder, that with all her fans, including herself, all Kate talks about is, "being a mom, mom of 8, I'm a stay at home mom, I can have my kids by my side, it's the dream job,"

Well, I seriously wonder if Kate's one of those parent's who didn't think past the time her kids will grow up and leave home. Then what? What do parent's do who are so involved with having kids and their kids' lives...do they know what to do past that stage of their life?

I mean she can't go with her kids to college (I have known some parents to try.) I mean I don't see Kate having any outside interests other then how to serve her kids dinner, take them to school, bark orders at them and such. It's going to be a rude day for her when her kids leave home.

Honestly, I think MIlo and Deanna are more uncomfortable with Jody Foster's references to her sexuality and privacy than the notion of children on stage. It's just the way I read it, so who knows, and frankly, who cares what those twits think.
As for Kate, Jody's speech was waay over her head.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 72

Deanna did makeup for Kate on a number of shoots and events so it's in her best interest to support her. It's in her best interest to support exploitation in general because that's just more opportunities for work for her. Anyone who stands to make money off the children should be taken with a grain of salt because they have a conflict of interest. Yet I have never once seen anyone but those who don't support such things point out the huge conflict of interest.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 73

Why is it people like Deanna always use such cheap defensive tactics. For instance here they are attacking the messenger instead of attacking the points she made directly. Lol. Jodie went to Yale. That's where she was stalked by her sheeple. A New York Times article opines today that after viewers got over the initial confusion of her speech most got it.

Blowing In The Wind said... 74

--------------

Milo is a puzzle. The jury is out on whether she is really as dumb as a bag of hair, just a delusional fan who lives in a fantasy world where she and Kate walk hand-in-hand on a beach, fondly gazing in each other's eyes; or if she's devious and cunning enough to know how to push Kate's buttons to get close to her. If her whole hick in the sticks persona is an act, then she's been very good in pulling it off.

Of course she takes a dig at Jodie. Milo must know that Jodie was stalked by an obsessive fan, not unlike herself. Jodie's stalker imagined himself to be in an intimate relationship with her and when ignored, did whatever he could to get her attention.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 75

I think milo is deliberately pretending she doesn't understand what Jodie was saying when she knows exactly what she meant, and deliberately pretending there are no similarities between Jodie's most obsessed fans, she's had several, to Kate's.

I'll take a hit on this, but I'd love to hear opinions. Jodie, by her own admission, has always longed for privacy. Why then, did she speak about her own sexuality? She even touched on the fact that her being gay was known years ago, "in the stone age." Why bring it up again? Was this really the forum to come out publicly? I'm just not sure that this added anything to an otherwise really heart-felt acceptance speech
___________
I am not going to perform a hit on you for your question..just will share my view on why she chose that moment. Jodie has always been inspirational and a trailblazer, first, in front of the camera, and, now, behind the camera.

I think that she is signaling the seismic shift in our society about what constitutes love, marriage and family. Her place in the film industry in set in stone, so there is really no personal risk. IMO, gay rights in the civil rights issue of our time. She isn't the first person to use her microphone and her position to advance a cause that is personal to her, as well as so many others-- and she won't be the last.

The privacy issue was not her primary purpose in the speech, so I don't think it is fair to run every word she said through that filter and then point out inconsistencies. In this day and age, she is a shining beacon of hope to those who are struggling with their own identities. I can't see any reason to criticize her choice--I applaud it.

Great first post. As for posting at odd times, remember there are a lot of us here who are big time insomniacs. It's much more fun for us to be able to actually talk with someone at 3:41am! When we're left on our own we tend to act silly, talking to ourselves and all. : /

Ah, that Milo. She/he/it sure is one heck of a mystery to me. As someone unthread already mentioned....of course she 'got it'. She just desperately wants MANY people to disagree with what Miss Foster said about stolen childhoods and privacy. That would make Milo's world all perfect again. She will stop at nothing to try and make Kreider look like an awesome parent. Too bad for the both of them that it's NEVER going to happen. Khate sold her kids and is still trying to. The 'Mother chip' is missing in that sad excuse of a human being.
It's too bad she couldn't Mom Swap with the amazing Jodie Foster....you know, a REAL MOM who loves her boys and cherishes their privacy, their well-being, their childhood, THEIR LIVES.

I wish her well and her kids are so lucky to have her as a mom.

And so is she.

I've enjoyed some of Jodie Foster's movies and do think she's a legitimate talent. But her support of Mel Gibson, a woman-beater and anti-semite turns me away. Here's just one of many quotes - this one is from MSNBC.

"Foster stuck by Gibson when he was reported to have made anti-Semitic and sexist slurs in 2006 and she's still defending him now that he's pleaded no contest after being charged with misdemeanor spousal battery for a fight he had with his then-girlfriend.
"I'm not defending his behavior," she said in a recent interview. "I'm defending the man that I know. And I know he's kind and loyal and is an incredible professional. He's probably the most beloved actor of anybody I've ever worked with in the film business. And I don't say that lightly."

LoveMyGrandsons said... 86

Welcome, Alaska Mama! So glad you decided to post.

Marie, I understand what you are saying about parents not having a life outside of their kids. However, I personally don't put Kate in that category and I believe she will not have any problem when her kids are grown up and gone. To me, the bottom line is she is not interested in her kids at all. Not their likes, their dislikes, their hopes, their dreams, etc.

The only interest she has in her kids is how to make a living off of them. Other than that, she doesn't show much interest in them at all. If she doesn't show interest in bonding with them while they were younger, she will not have any interest in them when they are older. Just my opinion, of course.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 87

Good to see you here Ex Nurse, I agree!

I like what was said earlier. Privacy means you decide what is revealed about you. If you want to talk about your sexuality or your tax lien or your home or work life, fine, but you should be the one in control, not someone else you don't even know. I don't take Jodie's comments as defending Mel Gibson, just saying, hey I personally have never had a bad experience with him. I wouldn't mind Deanna so much if she did the same. Instead of acting like she knows Kate is this or that at all times under all circumstances because SHE knows her, instead say look, all I can offer is that I personally have never had a bad experience--which may be the case, fair enough! That's a lot more credible, and a lot more open minded.

The sheeple say the same thing about Kate. How does anyone really know what kind of a mom Jodie Foster is? The public doesn't live with her...many times things that appear to be wonderful on the outside often turn out that they were less than perfect behind closed doors. She may very well be a saint when it comes to Motherhood, and she has proven herself to be loaded with talent as an actress, but does anyone, other than those who are close to her, really know enough about her private life to say that she's an incredible mom? What makes her a good parent?

That's a very good question.

I think because Jodie is so protective and private with her children makes me think so. Also the way she has lived her life. She just seems so down to earth, honest and doesn't see herself as a movie stah and someone to be admired by all. To her, I believe, movie making is a job and that's all. If it wasn't movies it would be something else creative like that. Being in the movies, as she sees it, doesn't define her as a person. It's what she does to put food on the table.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 91

I don't think anyone can know for SURE but I agree with Jo she has given us many clues about the kind of mom she is just like Kate has. A browse through pap photos show Jodie dressed down doing normal, mediocre things with two normal, mediocre young men that no one would ever recognize thanks to her protection.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 92

Also I find her comment that her reality show would be very boring to be incredibly significant and offers a fantastic insight into who she is just with those two words, I'm boring.

LoveMyGrandsons said... 93

Jo and Admin, I agree about Jodie Foster. She has kept her kids out of the limelight and has shown that she is trying to give them a normal life without the intrusion of the paps. Kate has never shown that. As a matter of fact, she has gone out of her way to expose her kids to the paps, and then complain about it.

Case in point, a couple years ago she took her kids and a photographer to a public park to have pictures taken with a haystack, pumpkins, etc. With all that wooded property she has, she could have bought a haystack and some pumpkins and had the pictures taken in the privacy of her own acres. However, she staged it publicly. She WANTS the attention, and she knows she needs her kids to get it so she sets them up in these situations and then complains about the paps.

I have never seen that from Jodie Foster, or for that matter, most other real celebrities.

What WAS the primary purpose in her speech? I don't believe that anyone ran every word through any filter and she wasn't judged unfairly. In fact, she wasn't judged at all. The question was why she would use a Golden Globes forum to confirm her sexual orientation. What purpose did it serve when, as she herself stated, it has been known for a long time and her life has been about maintaining privacy? She wasn't criticized here for doing so, although I have read quite a few comments on the internet about her speech, and she was bashed unmercifully about using an awards celebration to publicly "come out."

Good Vibes, this is from an article in People Magazine (2007):

**In the September issue of UK’s Psychologies Magazine, actress Jodie Foster, 44, talks about her childhood, staying sane in Hollywood and how she raises her children. Here are a few excerpts from the interview:

Talking of parents, obviously motherhood has been a huge, defining experience for you. A quote of yours I like is ‘Parenthood is the most interesting thing I do.’

It’s the most artistic thing I do. There’s a feeling that this is something deeper that you’re contributing to the world. And it’s work you do on your own, with no applause. This person has no idea of the energy and the love that you put forth, which is fine because, in the end, you’ve given all that you have and they are meant to take it for granted – and probably won’t even remember most of it.

You’ve said you want your children to have the opposite childhood to you, a normal childhood. Why is that?

I have a psychological need to create a really safe, normal life for them, because if there was anything I missed in my childhood, that was it. I really craved having a routine, stable life and that’s what I’ve given to my kids.**

There is a chasm of difference the size of the Grand Canyon between Kate and Jodie (see Kate, it's not wasted space after all)

When asked by James Lipton whether her children had made a significant change in her life career-wise Jodie responded:

"My plan was that I would work less and I would make the movies that I loved and for all the right reasons. I thought that was going to take a lot of juggling and little did I know that your priorities change and it was so easy to see them as 100% of my focus and it was harder and harder and harder to tear myself away from them. It had to be a really good movie and really worth it to do that."

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 101

I think the bigger question is why are we still a society where Jodie felt uncomfortable saying oh and by the way thank you to the love of my life just like any straight actor has always done in acceptance speeches. It's not a question of hypocrisy, it's a matter of things that shouldn't need to be private. There's a difference between privacy versus shame or fear.

We are that society because we, as a nation, are still struggling to understand and accept any deviation from the "norm," and as such, we are slow to accept such a relationship. Anyone coming out in public may be afraid of societal rejection. There is still a stigma associated with it. I agree with your comment, but why would she have to explain their relationship at all? @Grandsons, what I meant when I wrote that is I still honestly don't think Kate has, as a parent given a whole lot of thought about after her kids leaving her. I mean this in the aspect of controlling her children. I mean we've all seen way she dolls out food, even in a restaurant setting, how she just sort of seems to get some twisted enjoyment out of controlling her kids, because they're kids.

I don't think she's thought past the day when her kids will be able to say and do whatever they might like. I say this from personal standpoint because my parents were like Kate. I ate off those square plates, to ask for seconds was like committing a crime in our house. Especialy as I got older, I will admit I can look back on it and maybe label somethings abusive. Just way I look at Kate.

My parents didn't think past that point of when I would become older, much like Mady I catered to my mother to appease her to point now in life a little older I sometimes wonder without me being there...what is she going to do now? Make her own tea, do her own laundry, clean her own bathroom.

Kate might not give her kids much to do with household as her need for control but the fact is when her kids go to college, what the heck is Kate going to do for living? When she can't sit and tweet about her kids and how much they need her or all the things she does, "Everything I do is for them, if I went skating I would be out of commssion and not able to do things," (i.e. control things).

What are her sheep going to tell Kate when her kids are grown and gone because it won't be, "Oh you're such a good mommy, what are you and your 8 kids up to today? We want updates on your lives." Truth is when her kids are gone I don't think she's going to have much.

Not much except a big empty leather sofa, reruns of the "good old days," but on the plus side she'll have all the organic canned casseroles, bella bars and boxed wine to herself.

I also want to ask with her going to nowhere, except down the drain...I hope Steve isn't in her picture still. She doesn't need a bodyguard while she sits on her couch now does she? No, no wait...she might fall off.

Jumping In said... 117

Ooops.....

I was mesmerized by Jodie Foster's speech last night, she was both eloquent and abstract, coming from such a place of honesty. She challenged her audience to think about the idea that fame automatically means access to every aspect of that person's life. I don't buy the argument that "this is what you signed up for". I think exposure must be managed to suit the individual's level of comfort, and there the line must be drawn.

I loved her reference to reality television, obviously something she finds distasteful and foreign. We must remember though, that people like Honey Boo Boo and Kate do not bring talent to the screen, they bring spectacle, they are all about exposure.

For the artists we love to watch perform, they offer us their talent to witness, not their private lives to invade.

Another cold night in SoCal. Here, a short clip by Jimmy Kimmel, to help you understand the hardships we're enduring. ;)

But by then all Kate will have to talk about is her non-nwe leather sofa, and hoping that by then they'll have cure to regrow her some healthy looking hair.

I don't watch awards show, either. My question was directed at the poster who said that actors are narcissists. If one feels that way, does she/he watch television or go to movies, or it is bothersome to know that all actors have such a high opinion of themselves and thus, they avoid that form of entertainment?

After Hurricane Sandy... after the Israel-Gaza war last November... after the tragedy in Newtown, CT... after the recent gangrapes in India.... how does Milo have the NERVE to talk about what a "difficult path" Kate has traveled? And how many "adversities" she has overcome?

Excuse me, but what a crock.

Kate's life is a fairytale, compared to most.

Everything that is missing in her life, such as a husband, family, friends, is missing because of her and her lousy behavior.

She had 8 kids. Tough break, but she got rich and famous doing it. She is healthy, well-off. For crying out loud, she has been unemployed for months know and is still afloat. Who else can say that? She has 8 children who are thankfully healthy and alive. She has her home.

I am so sick of both Kate and Milo talking about what a tough life Kate has had. It's bullshit. And it's disrespectful to those who are currently facing real hard times.

Whatever floats your boat. Simply being an entertainer, with all the privilege it provides, doesn't mean they deserve all the excess or exposure. It's a strange world we live in today when major networks televise pretty people, some of who are very talented, giving one another such meaningless awards.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't have any ''resentment'' against KK. I dislike her intensely. I have zero respect for any mother that beats her toddlers. I have zero respect for a mother that keeps a wooden spoon in her car so she can ''happy up'' her children. I have zero respect for a mother that insists on being a parental alienator. I have zero respect for any person that forces her children to work, and then lives off the money her CHILDREN earned. I think those things are VERY different from any other mommy blogger or twitter.

I followed a blog for a long time now of a young girl with cancer in England, Alice Pyne.

I had thought of her alot while reading our last post about Megan and was thinking of sending the link of Megan's video to her. I hadn't been to her blog for a few days so missed the post that she had passed Saturday after a 5 yr fight against cancer.

This young girl was amazing. She started a charity to give holidays to families of children who were fighting severe illnesses. (Alice's Escapes) Inspired thousands to join bone marrow donor lists, raised lots of money and many other things.

AND she had a true BUCKET LIST of which she did most all that was on it. (Kate check it out to see what a bucket list really is all about!)

Also, here's a poem she wrote when she was 13.

'Reflections' - June 2009 for the 2009 'Race for Life'

When I'm feeling tired and weepy
and things aren't going my way
I watch others take for granted
that they'll see another day

When I feel afraid and all alone
and my mum feels this way too
I take a minute to reflect
On the things I'd like to do

I'd like to have a sailing yacht
and travel oceans far
Leave footprints sunken in the sand
No need to have a car

But for now my lines are busy
taking chemotherapy
To help me in my fight against
the cancer that's in me

I came here to this race today
for those who fight like me
Let's join together, one BIG team
'cos it's not beating me!

by Alice, age 13
June 2009

Even though I didn't really know her IRL I am going to miss her. RIP Alice Pyne

I guess I don't buy into the whole celebrity culture.

I started following Jon and Kate when they got divorced. It was hard not to! They were both staring in my face every time I got groceries. LOL

It's wonderful to see her sort of fade away now. I still am concerned for those precious kids but don't spend much time doing that either, as I have numerous other kids in real life to worry about.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 152

I think some films are important, sadly not most, but a fair number. I think it's cool to swear off all of them but a part of me thinks sometimes you do miss out. This has been a particularly good year in terms of films that "matter" in my opinion. For instance just drawing on the best picture nominees, I think Argo, Lincoln and Beasts of the Southern Wild (just watched tonight and enjoyed it) all have very important things to say about the Civil War, Iran, and Hurricane Katrina. I haven't seen Amour yet but heard it is about dementia, I imagine that's important too. Same with Zero Dark Thirty about Bin Laden. For me, films help me understand our world better, and the good ones almost always spark me to learn more in one way or another, be it reading the book it was based on or even just reading a bit more on the Internet. That's not to say it's not mindless some of the time too, but a lot of the times I find they are enriching, not just lazy brain snacks.

On the TV side, there's some really well done shows going on right now, everything from what Ken Burns is up to, to PBS including Downton Abbey, to Game Change, Homeland, Girls and Newsroom.

I like years when you feel like you're not going to kill brain cells by turning on the TV.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 153

I don't think this was mentioned but it looks like Jodie actually is split up from her girlfriend and her children's mom.

But what did she call her, her EX but her amazing partner in raising her kids, her BFF, she's wonderful. She bent over backwards praising her. Now that's how you co-parent, that's how you don't alienate your children's parent and sabotage their relationship. Just because you broke up doesn't mean she's not still their mom they adore. You ask why we think she's a good mom? Well, there's reason number 256 right there.

Bluebird said... 162

I know when my DD was 12 I didn't hang out with her. Schoolnights, after dinner and homework, she would either be on the phone with friends or listening to music, painting her nails, or doing any of those girly things. She would not have found it cool to hang around with her Mom. Actually, because I was a working Mom, I didn't have the time to hang out. I was busy with washing, dishes, meal preparation, cleaning, etc... I do remember a time or two when I would join her in a game of PacMan, but that happened so rarely.

Kate has no personal friends of her own and I think that's why she pretends to be her twins' BFF. I also think that it's rare that the 8 kids have friends over, weekdays or weekends. Kate never tweets about visitors, besides her handymen or her so-called friends, never about the children's friends.

Anonymous said... 166

I just want to say that I've hung out with my daughter (when she was a pre-teen and teenager) watching movies like Anne of Green Gables (actually the series), watching 'chick flicks', doing her hair, etc. But she would be mortified if I posted it on my private facebook page, let alone for 126k people on twitter.
Kate doesn't get that she what she posts on twitter to make herself(feel)relevant are things that EVERY mom does but doesn't need to brag about because normal moms respect the privacy of the mother/child relationship and their activities and don't have to have constant praise for doing what they should do and for relevancy.
I 'almost' feel sorry for Kate because having no real close parent friends, she doesn't know how to act when there isn't a camera shoved in her or her children's face and even then her actions were a downright shame.
I've been twitter acquainted with two notable actresses and I call them acquaintances because when I mention them in a tweet they always respond, however, I've never met them, nor do I tweet them incessantly. This 'best friend Milo' thing is downright odd.
Additionally, most real celebrities post something about a movie they are doing, or mention a charity that they are involved in, or post a political comment. None that I have seen or follow RT all the accolades about their looks, and the constant histrionics of their old work.
Kate is a former reality personality and that is all she is or ever will be, in addition to her having 8 children (6 at once). She doesn't have a talent, she needs to take time to find out what she is good at and do it instead of dabbling with one lame brain idea/scheme after another.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 167

Another thing concerning, is that she comes across so needy all the time, are the twins feeling OBLIGATED to hang out with her and support her emotionally like this all the time? Instead of texting or talking to friends, tackling homework projects, painting nails, all the other normal 12 stuff. It sure sounds like it.

chefsummer #Leh said... 168

Something about he sent a letter to her west coast attorney firing him from Lindsay, without Lindsay's permission.

Sound familiar? Didn't he do something like that to Jon's attorney who was actually doing a pretty good job standing up to Kate/TLC? And then himself did a p*ss poor job for Jon?

Working Woman said... 171

Love how she describes it as "hanging" with her twelve-year-olds.

She needs to be their mother, not their friend. Mothers "spend time" with their 12-year-olds, not "hang" with them.

It's a sad turn of events. When the tups were real little and seemed to be the main attraction of the show, the twins were of little use to her.

Now that the tups are older and in that mid-childhood phase that (which Mady and Cara were in when the show was at its most popular), Kate probably does not consider them to be as profitable so now THEY are of less use to her. At this point, Mady and Cara are entering their teenage years, so hanging out with them and talking about being with them probably makes Kate feel young and "cool" again.

FYI teenagers tend to be embarrassed by moms who try to be their friends.

Think: Regina George's mother

Bluebird said... 172

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 173

Chef it IS a really thin line here about the BFFs and her almost teens. In a perfect world mom would be our BFF. But the teen years are not the time. There will be plenty of time to be besties once your child is grown, out of the house, and completely cut off. It happens often. What happens when the twins do something wrong that requires punishment which invariably will happen? Will they feel betrayed by their best friend when their best friend suddenly has to put on her mommy pants and ground them? Or, will they even not respect punishments their BFF doles out because, ha-ha come on mom we're besties you know I won't do it again!

Conversely, what happens if they get a boyfriend or new BFF and suddenly don't want to hang out with Kate? Is Kate prepared to handle that rejection emotionally? Because it WILL happen.

I spend a lot of time with my daughter, and I did with my own mom. But we each had own-age friends. But the parent/child relationship was very much present too. Kate acts like its reciprocal- the girls would rather 'hang' with their 'cool, young, hot mama' mom and not with friends or even just one another. It will bite her in the flat ass when she has to lay down the law on appropriate clothes , curfews, dates, other teenage 'vices' and they will not be willing to listen to their BFF b/c she is putting herself on par with them.

(Well, don't know if she will know about appropriate clothes...!)

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 176

Formerly yes I think that's the biggest concern is how do you lay down the law to a PEER?

I think we need to make a distinction between spending time with your kids versus being your kids BFF. I think you can spend TONS of time with your kids and still never cross into that dangerous BFF territory. My parents spent tons of time with me, for sure. But, they weren't my "friends" until adulthood. They were mom and dad, period. And I knew the few times they had to lay down the law, they meant business. Conversely, I had a very playful, fun, BFF aunt who spent a lot of time with me, and although she never had to punish me, I can just imagine if she ever tried, I probably would have laughed and said aw you're kidding right come on we're cool, right?!

Working Woman said... 177

Mady and Cara seem like great kids, I do hope they also get time to enjoy being pre-teens with friends their own age. They deserve it.

There is nothing wrong with mothers spending time with preteen or teenage daughters, a close mother-daughter relationship is lovely and important during these years. But based on the constant sarcastic jokes Mady seems to throw Kate's way and Kate's use of the term "hanging out", I worry that no boundaries are being set.

Kate should make some friends who are not getting paid to be with her and who did not come out of her uterus.

They helped make dinner or clean the house together before taking them off to violin practice, I wouldn't bat an eyelash---it's normal. Normal stuff Moms/teens do. It's alarming that with 8 kids, I can count on one hand and still have fingers left over, how many times Kate's mentioned a practice or recital. I know families with 2 kids and the parents are full time taxi services.
Oh great, Kate allows to girls to hang in her room (which is something 12 year olds do in their own rooms, with their age appropriate friends). But what about what Kate does for them?
If that's what the kids have to settle for with regards to mom paying attention to them, then it's incredibly selfish.

Regarding Kate being BFF with the twins? Even if it were true (and I don't believe it for a moment) it's a stupid choice. The girls can have lots of friends. What they need is for their only mother to behave like one.

OrangeCrusher1 said... 185

Kate's boundary lines with her older girls are very blurry. At their age sleepovers should be with friends, not Mom. Given the multiples in the house, I suspect none of the kids have friends other than their sibs, another weird situation. And if not encouraged to add more kids to the mix, the twins should, probably are not, be accepting invitations to 'hang' at friends' houses. But given the nature of geography away from the school, and the fact that a friend's mother would have to communicate with poor overworked suspicious and jealous Kate, nope, doubt the twins do much outside the Kompound. Anything normal like that comes via Dad, and oh sheeple, rumor has it they were seen at TGIF with Dad. Just Dad, no sibs, no Liz, no gf's kids. How to spin that?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 186

Tucker I couldn't agree more.

Due to twitter reports and pics and so on of people seeing Jon and Kate at games and things, I actually do believe the kids at least do SOME activities. But why doesn't this interest Kate to mention it? I would think she probably goes. And I don't buy the, I want them to private thing because she's mentioned lacrosse before and mentions SOO much else about them.

When she mentions the kids it's how the kids serve HER needs and fun, never, ever about her getting joy out of meeting their needs and the things THEY are interested in. I've said this before but we don't have the foggiest notion what the kids are into. Ask me about Aaden and I could tell you well I remember he has glasses and seems sweet......heck if anyone knows what he's into now. Is he a sports kid, musical, singing? We haven't a clue.

While this has turned out to be a GOOD thing don't get me wrong, as it's afforded them some privacy to enjoy the things that they do without anyone knowing, it speaks to Kate's ODD relationship with them and her ODD focus, i.e. not on what normal moms and dads focus on and talk about all the time, whatsoever.

Bluebird said... 187

I think she also mentioned that the twins had singing lessons. But I've never heard her mention having to bring the 8 to anything else. No gymnastics, swimming, baseball, or whatever else. These children do not have outside activities.

My mom all ways made sure that me and my brothers knew that.

She was our mom first and a friend second.

I worry most about the boys. Of course all of them, but the boys especially and hope that they are learning sports and scouts etc. The thing is, I don't get the sense that they're part of teams and group activities where boys get to be boys. Playing with their sister tups and having the twins mommy them just isn't good for their development.
That said, I do believe that the tups spend a good deal of time with Jon.

It used to be that homsexuals had to hide in the closet because they feared not being accepted.

Now, thoe of us who are opposed to their deviant lifestyle are in the same position.

************************************************

WTF??? That's kind of a random, out of the blue statement and please don't try and poke people here into an argument. Next subject, please.

Jo, I don't think my post was random. This thread is about Jodie Foster and her "coming out" has been discussed by almost everyone. I was adding my two cents.

I think consertative opinions are held by the majority of people. My point was that the roles have been reversed and it's those who disagree who are chastised.

Scrolling past, scrolling past 184, the words 'deviant lifestyle' are enough for me.

I think people are taking offense at the use of the term "deviant behavior", not your stance that your opinion is unpopular in the media these days. And I agree that gay acceptance is popular in media, so yeah, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction.
Think about it. You seem to be put off by your opinion being marginalized. Try you and your sexuality being marginalized, criticized, ostracized and demonized.

I do think there is some truth to the sentiment that how the media tends to feel about things is not necessarily representative of how the rest of the country feels. Population wise, it seems to me we are pretty evenly divided. The last several presidential elections have been relatively close. There are no 60-30 races or anything like that. There hasn't been a true landslide in decades. But when they show those blue and red colors, it's pretty shocking in terms of land mass, how much is red. Without understanding anything else, you'd wonder how the blue ever manages to win. What's right or wrong is probably not a good idea to debate here, but I do have conversations often with my friends about how people here can get "out of touch" with how much of the rest of the country feels. I think it's fine to be aware of other viewpoints out there even if you don't agree or even if it feels offensive. It helps us understand each other if we know their view.

Tucker's Mom, thank you for your reasonable reply.

I think social issues often go too far, both ways. It used to be scandalous to have a child out of wedlock. Women were scorned and ostrasized. Now it's gone to the other extreme. I think the same is true with homosexuals. They shouldn't be scorned, nor should they be celebrated.

I think the majority of people don't think what you think they think.

Nor should anyone who lives/thinks dfferently than you be tagged a deviant. Not for their sexuality.

Absolutely. It seems that there isn't any room for moderate thinking in the media. They like to present it as two polar opposites and encourage people to rant against what they perceive as the "opposite" viewpoint.

Better tv that way. Sadly.

Land mass doesn't equal population density. I don't know that we can draw any broad-based conclusions from looking at a map that indicates red vs blue states. I do agree, however, that we tend to view the rest of the world through our personal experiences/encounters. No wonder, then, that those of us who live in a densely populated area might be more aware, if not accepting, of other viewpoints.

Calling someone else's lifestyle "deviant"? Ugh. Not a fan of language that inhibits, rather than encourages, a broader dialogue (ergo, understanding).
