I too am very disturbed by the way the 911 operator handled the call from Amanda Berry. Ms. Berry said clearly that she had been kidnapped, and the operator says "we'll send a car when one frees up" or something like that? Seriously, that's how they are trained to respond to a kidnap victim? I think that operator really ought to be re-assigned to a position where they can do no harm. What if Ms. Berry's abductor were heading down the street right at that moment, and she was at a payphone alone? He could have grabbed her and dragged her back to the house, while the 911 operator simply hung up, shrugged shoulders, and forgot all about it. If nothing else comes from this, I hope that dispatcher is no longer dealing with serious emergencies and failing in his/her duty.

I'm glad everyone is safe! This seems to be happening quite a bit lately. A friend of mine was en route to Ft. Lauderdale last week when the plane was hit by lightning and they had to make an emergency landing in Tampa...140 people aboard.
I was on a plane several years ago that got hit and we had to make an emergency landing -- belly landed on a foamed runway. I was never so happy to set my feet on solid ground! Some very scary moments.
It seems that Charles Ramsey Charles was convicted for battering his wife and did prison time for three separate attacks more than 10 years ago. I'm not at all surprised that he has a 'checkered past'. His face is a road map of a difficult life.
I do hope that having his past dragged into the media accounts won't discourage others to fail to help someone in distress because of fear of media attention.
Also, I believe the accounts of neighbors who say they had called police in the past and were either ignored or the police just knocked on the door and then left when no one answered. That neighborhood seems to be full of distrust from both the people that live there and the police. The people seemed to just expect and accept that calling the police wouldn't necessarily result in any action being taken.
In my neighborhood, if the police don't come at once, we would call again and ask why. If we thought the police weren't taking the proper action, we would call and complain. If all else fails, we can always call the Texas Rangers.
I believe that none of Charles Ramsey's past makes what he did any less brave or wonderful. I hope that others feel the same.
