I make baked ziti with Italian sausage cut in pieces and cut up meatballs with a lot of mozzarella and parmesian cheese. It is good and even for left overs for lunch at work the next day. I serve it with garlic bread and side salad. I used to love chicken ala king made with cream of chicken soup, and served on toast.
Don't get me wrong, we make and eat casseroles at our house, but more often in the cooler months, and at holiday time. Thinking lasagne, scalloped potatoes (with leftover ham), Thanksgving veggies, but in the summer I do not like to turn on the oven, of course, Kate probably cranks up her A/C, we hardly turn ours on.
Tucker frittata or some kind of scrambled eggs are usually my go to dumping ground for veggies almost over the line too. Also most veggies are good dumped on a salad, cooked or uncooked. I rarely run the oven for long periods in the summer months either. I don't even have air so I have to be careful.
I wonder how many of Kate's fans are actually buying the cookbook because of the recipes. Seems they are more interested in ogling photos of Kate and the kids.
Sleepless I think you're right. This book could be about anything and they would feign an interest. They just want to ogle.
Ironically, there's been far more cooking tips, tricks and just general sharing I've heard here than I've ever seen from the sheeple. We've even talked a great deal about farming and GMOs. I don't see the kind of sincere interest in food, cooking, and eating high quality meals that I find here.

Problem with Kate's cuisine d'casserole is her emphasis on all the 'fresh' goods, which to me, glopping them, if they are really so frsh, in a casserole, is sad. We all make frittatas and other dishes with the leftovers and not so fresh, but she makes it sound like such a new and great idea. It's fine to be mediocre, Kate, cuz that is what you and your culinary skills truly are.

Yes Orange, it seems a waste to cook the heck out of farm fresh food. Other than salads, I never seen anything from Kate's Kitchen that is just lightly steamed, or grilled, or with maybe one or two items cooked but the rest raw. Nothing is medium rare. Everything looks overprocessed and overcooked to me. Nothing looks light. It's not my style of eating. I.e. not thrown in the oven or a pot for hours and hours until it looks like goop.

The problem is people who question crap being sold to us are labeled haters and often harassed.

It is up to her fans to be aware of that and decide for themselves whether they want to support someone who makes comments like that. It is not Kate's obligation to disclose everything she does and says in private. She can sell what she wants. But people can question it too and should.

Here's my take on Paula and then I'm going to try and get some more sleep. I think she is like a lot of southern people of her generation - not ALL southerners, mind. I think she generally doesn't see her racism. It's like saying "so and so is my black friend". Why aren't they just your friend? She has categories for people and these people are associated with certain stereotypes in her mind.
She grew up in a time that was very different then now. Those values are ingrained in her and it reflects in her words. I don't think she is discriminatory necessarily. But "blacks" as a whole will always be separate but equal in her mind.
I could be wrong. I honestly don't follow her so please enlighten me if needed.

Maybe Sillimom, I don't know what to think. Have you read the transcript? I'm not even sure it's a southern thing. Paula and her family come across as rather class-less. For example, her brother apparently frequently viewed pornography at work and frequently made sexual jokes. I'm not sure what you call that but no class. That's not a southern thing or a cultural thing. Classy people don't look at porn at work or make sexual jokes, especially at work.
Paula said something to the effect of she didn't know any man who didn't make sexual jokes. Really? Because I know plenty who don't do that, who feel it's inappropriate to ever, EVER make such jokes either at all but especially in front of women. Says a lot about her circle where that kind of thing is the norm.
She said she moved 23 times with her husband. He's not in the military, they just moved for work. I have to wonder why she didn't put her foot down with him and say no, myself and the kids are not going to be uprooted again. What exactly was going on there? My point being I wonder if despite her successes she is actually quite a doormat. Apparently she never told her brother excuse me but you will NOT ever say this or that at work or view porn at work EVER. She let a culture of inappropriate behavior both when it came to race and sex prevail and both didn't seem to recognize it was a problem and didn't try to stop it when she probably could as head honcho.
It was a fascinating read.

The word that comes to my mind is patronizing, which bespeaks condescension. You do not do that to your equals.
At her core, Paula is ignorant about race issues. Aren't we all on some level, but she really thinks that saying "I don't see color" is a believable construct. We all do, so her apology is in a way trying to placate the viewers by telling them what she *thinks* is PC; what they want to hear, or what she needs to say to make this go away.
In Deen's case, I think it's duplicity sans guile. But, I could be wrong.

In my eyes, Paula Deen damned herself with her own words.
During the deposition, when she was asked: "Have you ever used the 'N word' yourself?" she replied: "Yes, of course."
She talked about an incident when she used the slur and was then asked "Have you used it since then?"
She replied: "I'm sure I have, but it's been a very long time."
Her saying "of course" she has, and "I'm sure I have" used racial slurs, shows a complete lack of contrition and awareness. I don't care that she was brought up in a south rife with intolerance and hatred of another race. Plenty of people from the south never accepted racism, and plenty have grown enough to be ashamed of such vile treatment of others.
Deen's answers make it sound like such words are indeed a matter of course in her life, and she should be excused her behavior by virtue of how and where she was raised. That sickens me.
Had she answered those questions by saying something like "I am ashamed and embarrassed to admit that I have used that word in the past," it would have at least sounded like she was sincerely sorry for being cruel and ignorant.
I know a lot of her fans are mad at the Food Network for not renewing her contract, but between this and the diabetes scandal, Paula Deen sealed her own fate.

Weighing in on the Paula Deen scandal (I'm actually from Savannah, so I have something of a dog in this race!)...
We "locals" never warmed to her all that much. The way she acts is so over-the-top "HAI Y'AAAAALLL!" Southern Belle that really, she's become something of an embarrassment over the last few years. The only people that eat at Lady & Sons are people from out of town- the food is really pretty mediocre, and I've never heard good things about management from people who work there or at Uncle Bubba's.
I don't think it's fair to lump her behavior in with "Oh, well, she's a Southerner of a 'certain generation'"- bullsh!t, my parents are her age and were marching for integration. The woman has a HISTORY of lying and covering her @ss for as long as she can before being forced to come clean. Savannah is, on the whole, a very genial, low-key town. Our mayors have been solidly African-American since 1996, so it's not like it's a festering hotbed of 1950s racism. All of this is on HER.
About the 23 moves- she has a history of mental/emotional problems- she was agoraphobic for many years. I'm not sure I would label her a 'doormat' as much as I would someone who emotionally probably isn't the most stable in the world.
In reading some of the twitter comments, why does it not surprise me that some of the sheeple play that exact same doorbell "game" with their dogs and their dogs love it. As far as i can tell Jamie hasnt been on twitter (under her own name at least), but isn't it about time for her to pop in out of nowhere and thank Kate for teaching them that new "game" that the dog seems to love and that they're going to continue to play it with her? Oh no, it doesn't make her anxious at all, in fact it helped her overcome all doorbell related phobias. In fact she loved it so much that we had to disconnect the doorbell so that she didn't go crazy with glee every time the doorbell rang after you left!

I never paid much attention to her because she was so grating but I figured she was always putting it on for the northern crowd...had to be because no one talks like that. She is an embarrassment. Sure, there are some ignorant people in the South just like anywhere else, but I find for the most part, everyone gets along and is respectful. In fact, you'll find no friendlier people than southerners: black, white, whatever. Paula is a dinosaur. I am glad the Food Network let her go. What an intolerant and ignorant person she is! Rene Syler wrote a column about the taping of the pilot for that show, and Goody's version of what happened does not match the account of someone that was there and in the chair.
Revisionist history, and Kate should be ashamed that she's included in Goody's smears of Paula Deen; it sure doesn't make Kate look better to tell lies about someone else and the reasons for yet another Kate failure.
I don't agree that Paula Deen should be excused because of her age.
Paula Deen is 66 years old. She is not Miss Daisy and entitled to a pass because she grew up in a different time. She's not 86 or 96 and raised during a time when certain language and behavior was acceptable without question. She lived through the years of the Civil Rights movement and was, if nothing else, a witness to it.
As Admin said, Deen's behavior, thoughts and speech reflect more of her real background than I think the character she portrayed of herself - a Southern gentlewoman. No, her own speech gave her true self away.
The transcript was revealing because to me it showed there are more issues going on here than a racist 66 year old woman. Rather I think it revealed a woman who has herself and others done many things at other's expense without remorse and who ignored inappropriate behavior. A woman with an ego paranoid everyone is jealous and yet an insecure woman who put up with what seems like inherently one sided relationships. To that I would say you're never too old for therapy. She also seems unsettled and restless. Who is still moving around every 5 years at 66 years old? You just never know how emotionally damaged people may be no matter what happy face they put on.

My son has never liked food that touches other food - so cassaroles are a no go for him. Pizza is the exception. I do like to make tuna cassarole occasionally for myself - it's a comfort thing. Is beef stroganoff a cassarole? I like that too.

I appreciate your comments about Paula Deen. I do get frustrated at comments that say "she is a product of her time and place. Everyone in the south of her generation used that word." etc. No, everyone DID NOT. My maternal grandparents were from Alabama. They did not use that word, because they considered usage of that word low class and without taste. They had prejudices, but they did not believe in calling names like that.
But as you point out - this lawsuit shows more than just an occasional use of an offensive term by Paula Deen (and her brother). It shows that both of them are low class and have little respect for others under their supervision. Watching porn at work? Showing it to your employees? Telling sexist and racists jokes at a workplace? Telling your employees to use a particular entrance if you are black? Paula knew all about this and allowed it to continue - she was part owner. She may not view herself as racist - but looking from the outside, she surely is.
I liked Paula Deen when she was new to the Food Network. But as time went on, her accent became so thick you could cut it with a knife. She was clearly capitalizing on every last dime she could squeeze - with getting a show for her sons (ha! even Paula couldn't make that last long), getting a wedding paid for by TLC, getting expensive trips paid for by TLC, and basically selling out to the highest bidder. Money became the be all and end all.
I am not sorry she was non-renewed. I won't miss her phony southern accent and her overtly sexual comments about how she likes to get her hands "on the meat." Blah.
When I was growing up blacks were "negroes". Women were "broads". Downs Syndrome people were "retarded" and went to schools for the retarded or special ed. classes in the public school. It was the normal conversation, not being mean or pejorative. It was the way the general public of all classes and upbringings said it. We didn't know any different.
But when it became clear those were terrible words to use, we quit using them, not only in public but also in private conversations. We began to use preferred words - Black, Afro-American, women, Downs child, etc.
It wasn't that hard. It wasn't that hard because we didn't like using words that hurt. We policed ourselves and didn't wait for someone to sue us or fire us for that language and then actually defend ourselves by saying it is the way we were raised. Let's not blame others for our own poor judgment and prejudices.

Kate's only topic is Kate. I honestly have been embarrassed FOR her on some of her guest host jobs. As a host, you are supposed to be (or at least act) interested in the person you are interviewing. Not Kate. She tries to turn every question or comment to the guest into something about Kate.

Hoosier I agree. I think it's nearly essential to be naturally curious about other people and things in order to be a good host. This curiosity helps you ask good questions. Look at how Katie Couric does an interview. She is so interested in her subjects and asks great questions. In my opinion, regardless your politics, her interview with Sarah Palin was nearly perfection. She asked every question that the public wanted to know. She knew what we wanted to ask because it's what she wanted to ask too. Then to add to that you also need to be good with cameras and being on air. It's not an easy thing and few people have what it takes.

As I recall this test pilot was sort of a View type show. It was not dependent on any one person, it was an ensemble. Sheeple think. My bet is that she does believe it. She really does have some serious mental issues going on (in addition to hating men). She believed the tabloid stories that two of Jon's female friends put out (Jon's manhood) and vehemently stated that what they said was FACT. I don't post much on this blog, though I do consider this a wonderful place to learn and grow - but this will be my last visit to this blog. I am a proud Southerner, born and raised in metro Atlanta. Unfortunately, the Paula Deen scandal has now allowed those nationwide to spew their stereotypes of Southerners - it's all over the print and electronic media. I'm done...I'm gone.
Paula I don't understand what this blog has to do with that. I thought everyone was agreeing with you she's a stereotype and that this is not how people behave no matter where you're from. I do feel your frustration though with what Ms. Deen has done, or not done, for the South. No one wants to be stereotyped. No one wants one person to represent an entire region. Hi Paula. I'm sorry you are upset, but I think your anger is misplaced. The person who is perpetuating the stereotype is Paula Deen herself. She is using that stereotype as an excuse for her bad behavior. I and several others here today have said very clearly that her words and actions are not representative of the Southern population. There are bigots in every geographical area of this country.
The really incredible part of this story is that Paula Deen's "truth," as highlighted through her testimony, is evidence of her ignorance and bigotry. That is not the fault of anyone other than herself.

OT: I read the entire Paula Deen deposition this afternoon. All 150+ pages of the transcript. Also read the National Enquirer originally broke the story. My question four admin or anyone who knows legalese, would this deposition be only available to the parties involved in the lawsuit, or does it become part of public record somehow?
After reading it, and being a Paula Deen fan, and being from rural Virginia and a southerner, here is my take.
Paula will do anything for her brother. Including letting him continue to run a restaurant that has not made a profit and currently is at least $300,000 in debt, even after high priced consultants recommended he be removed from that position. She is willing to let her corporation be vulnerable to not only this sexual harassment lawsuit but also possible EEOC lawsuits, just because she does not want to believe anything bad about her baby brother. She even said her brother went into rehab for alcohol and cocaine use ” to support his wife.” Paula dull did not believe her brother ever had an alcohol problem or ever used cocaine.
My completely out of the blue speculation is that Paula s lawyers were playing hardball with the lawyers for the harassment lawsuit. And the opposing lawyers were all like ” you wanna play hardball? Ok, let's see you handle this.”
I feel sorry for Paula. She was trying to take care of family, while her brother was doing things that would get him fired and maybe even arrested if he wasn't related to her.
You know the most shocking thing I read that I really have trouble believing, is that Paula said she does not know how to email. When your corporate communications are mostly in email, do you really want your personal assistant to have exclusive access to your email? I don't think she really understands all the implications, or how business runs today. She had corporate lawyers, and she did not want to hear anything bad.
Oh and after reading the deposition, I don't believe one word about the diabetes story. That the pharmaceutical company approached her out of the blue. Not true no way in the world.

When I was growing up blacks were "negroes". Women were "broads". Downs Syndrome people were "retarded" and went to schools for the retarded or special ed. classes in the public school. It was the normal conversation, not being mean or pejorative. It was the way the general public of all classes and upbringings said it. We didn't know any different.

my youngest sibling has Downs Syndrome. All of the family were very protective of our yougest - such a sweet, gentle soul with never a mean thought about anyone. I still remember how livid I would get when people would outright stare at my sister, and sometimes point, laugh or say mean things - right in front of us. My parents would never let us respond, but made us ignore it. I wanted to rush at them and start swinging, or at the very least, yell at them for being mean.
But my parents were right, nothing good would have been accomplished by making a scene. It would only have upset our sister.
I'm sure stares and unkind remarks still happen these days to those who are challenged in one way or another, but I do feel that by mainstreaming children with Downs Syndrome or other handicaps into the school system and society in general, it has become less "foreign." As you say, most people evolve over time, become wiser, understand that some of their behavior when young was wrong or hurtful to others. But when you continue hurtful behavior into adulthood, there really is no excuse. Not in this day and age.
I am so pleased to see how today's generation of children (mostly) do not care about the skin color of their classmates. I guess some areas are still mostly white, but not many anymore, and I am glad of that. In our area, we have a large Samoan population, as well as Hispanic population. There are also children of Chinese and Japanese background, those from India, as well as others. It's a melting pot. While their parents might still have some ingrained prejudices, most of the kids have known each other since kindergarten and when they look at their friend - they don't see "black" "mexican" etc. It's simply no big deal to them.
Each generation makes progress, and that's a good thing :)

Oh Lord, yes! When I first moved up to NYC for college, which would have been 2004-5 thereabouts, she was JUST getting to be super-popular. And you know who watched her, bought her cookbooks, and talked about her? New Yorkers! She was a successful but by no means superstar chef/restauranteur in Savannah before her show took off, but once it did...
Paula Deen's image and food are almost entirely marketed towards Northerners or transplants. It's like a Disneyland version of Southern cuisine and personality and it DOES annoy the Hell out of a ton of Southerners, because it is basically affirming the "nice" stereotypes about the region to the rest of the country. They talk funny! They cook with a lot of butter! That same butter wouldn't melt in their mouths! Aren't they CUTE?
Ugh. Like I said, Savannah locals are ambivalent to her at best. A few years ago she got knocked in the head by a frozen ham during a charity give-away, and the local news didn't stop airing that clip for weeks.
(In full disclosure, I've met her and her sons a few times– I worked in tourism/restaurants and Savannah is a small town. The sons are all right.)

It's Down syndrome. Down is the doctor who identified it. I think Downs syndrome is common because most people consider it proper to say Down's to shorten it so people get confused and think it's Downs'. I don't think though that Dr. Down would mind either way.

Here's another everyday heroine and a much better woman to look up to than your typical celebrity. Karin Williams is a school crossing guard. A car lost control, flipped and was sliding toward some students. She rushed to push the kids out of the way. The car hit her instead. She is in the hospital with multiple broken bones but is expected to survive.
As the media was gathering information for this story they interviewed an elderly neighbor of Karin's. Karin visits her three times a week to check in and awhile back saved her life when she found her after the neighbor had a stroke .

I'm surprised Kate didn't have one of the kids wear that sumo hair for their Korean dinner episode. But Mady got chopsticks in her hair. I'm sorry Kate didn't do that when they were in Hawaii. Jon's Korean relatives would have dropped her in the ocean for putting food utensils in hair. That is simply not done in Asian culture. Okay, my daughter is a huge food network fan. We just watched Trisha Yearwood's Trisha's Southern Kitchen. Aside from the fact the food looked good as did Trisha, I loved the fact that she showed the out takes at the end. She was showing her fans that this is a scripted show. Gotta love that, imo. Aside from other out takes, she had just finished making fried chicken and mashed potatoes and the producer said "Okay now we're doing the night scene" which in the show was her and her girlfriend sneaking down to the kitchen for a midnight snack. She looks down at the food she just wolfed down and says "Oh no!" with a horrified laugh.
I think Food Network has their Paula Deen successor. Younger, just as sassy and charming but without the over the top southern act.

Purely speculating, but I wonder if Robert leaked this photo in light of Paula Deen. He does have some photos. With the traditional Asian hair hat and pulling her eyes back I don't see how you interpret it as anything but racist. She may say she was kidding around. That's not the point. Not sure about a meeting in PA. Where was that mentioned? He said that Steve vetted him, perhaps found out that he wasn't legally divorced from his wife. He said that when they met, Steve moved his chair so he could see Kate. I would think that this was at the meet and greet in Tennessee. According to the tweets, it was all cordial, but by that time he knew that it was closure between them.

I think there's a good chance the picture was tweeted by Robert. Seems his style, tweet a teaser then disappear. Given the tweet name it's definitely a message that Kate should be called out on her racism too, just like Paula Deen was.
Leslie thanks for posting those. I think that goes back to my original statement that it's not just that this woman is racist. This woman is just a low-brow classless jerk, all around. And you find these people everywhere it's not a Southern thing.
I had read this week that her parents died before she was 23 and I was thinking about Nigella and how her parents died when she was young too. I was googling a bit more and saw that google books has large excerpts of that book online. Just in the few pages I read, not only is her writing style so folksy that it's odd (she says things like "Plus, I...", "But, oh God" and she does that horrible dropping of the G in writing just like Milo ugggh!!!), but the things she talks about are weird. Paula Deen was so bad when she went to a therapy session with her pastor he called her a spoiled brat. She marks odd events like the day Orlando Bloom was born because someday she would be in a movie with him. Um, ok, but who cares when he was born? She actually pointed a gun at her husband at one point, unloaded. But she admits she wanted to kill him. She sounds horrifically unstable.
