The morality of freebies

Reality T.V. often makes a spectacle of lavishing families with expensive gifts and trips. Usually, for free.

The Duggars in China

Kristin Wong, an award-winning writer and film maker (MSN, Forbes), has been thinking a lot about the morality of personal finance lately. In a recent blog she tackled the question of whether it is moral to accept a freebie you don't really need or want. Kristin had this to say about this controversial issue:

Recently, I took advantage of a free pair of movie tickets to see “The Lone Ranger,” a movie I really have no desire to see. But the tickets were free! And they were limited, so without giving it much thought, I nabbed them. I needed them; they were free.
The Roloffs in Hawaii
Practically, this may have been a good decision. After all, it could be a fun, free date night idea. A good, cheap way to spend a Friday night with Brian.

But morally, this was kind of a crappy thing for me to do. Because maybe a hard-working mom saw the ‘Free Lone Ranger Ticket!’ link. And maybe she got excited because her daughter wanted to see it — but oops! Someone who doesn’t even appreciate the movie already got the last one because, “*shrug* It’s free.”
Part of being frugal, at least the moral part of it, is not taking more than what you need — not just because you can’t afford it, but because you want to leave more for everyone else. In this way, I think there is morality in thrift. What I did wasn’t frugal. It was cheap.

To me, the ongoing cheap vs. frugal debate proves that there’s morality in frugality. When does your frugality negatively affect others? Just because it’s a practical, sound financial decision for your budget doesn’t mean it’s a good decision overall. There are ethical questions to consider, which makes it seem like there is indeed morality in personal finance.
Money-related issues go beyond a cost-benefit analysis. We have to ask ourselves, is this hurting anyone?

Thanks for your common "cents", Kristin.

I tried to post this earlier, but I don't see it. just wanted to give my perspective on Bill Gates, from the point of view of someone who lives in Seattle. JMHO, of course:

1) Bill Gates became obscenely wealthy by co-opting other companies technology.

2) He had a vision, yes. He is a perfect example of what Malcolm Gladwell calls an "Outlier". There was an inevitability of what he did--people had been working on versions of a home computer for decades--he was not the first. This was a matter of right time, right place.

3) Microsoft suppressed innovation, and killed smaller companies. That is a fact.

4) One of Microsoft's other founders currently runs a large company who's sole purpose is to buy up patents, and then extort royalties or flat payments from small start-ups who have to settle because they don't have the resources. There is a fascinating episode on This American Life (NPR radio) that documents Carbonite's legal victory because the developer refused to settle.

5) Bill Gates foundation sets very narrow criteria for which causes they fund. Millions for non-profits that customize their purpose to fit the criteria. Nothing for those that don't. Example: Millions for homeless housing, nothing for women's transitional housing. I was on the board of a transitional housing nonprofit--the residents were escaping abusive relationships and could live in the house for up to 2 years. They were required to work, and contribute on a sliding scale, while they received counseling and learned healthy tools for living. No money for them from the Gate's foundation.

6) Bill Gates does not just control his own foundation. Warren Buffet, his golf buddy and fellow masters level bridge player, ceded control of his charitable foundation to the Bill Gates

7) Therefore, Bill Gates solely determines, using very narrow and specific criteria, which causes are worthy for funding of billions of dollars.

8) There are a hell of a lot of now 40-50 years olds that have retired after a 10 year stint at Microsoft, because they had stock options, which grew at the expense of many other start-ups, that were equally, or, more innovative. They are annoyingly arrogant and entitled--You can spot them a mile away. The schools that their children attend want for nothing, while other schools have 32 kids in a classroom, and the parents are asked to donate supplies and Kleenex.

9) Microsoft, single-handedly, has spawned a brand new class of people, who have priced many qualified buyers out of the housing market in Seattle. It is happening right now--the housing market is a feeding frenzy. Houses are drawing multiple offers, in a single day, and being sold without contingencies, and for $50,000-$100,000 over the asking price.

9) Bill Gates philosophy of business is "Let the big dogs hunt". Woe to anything that wanders into his path.

Does his foundation do some good? Yes, undoubtedly. But, that kind of wealth should not be controlled by a single person, no matter who he is. The same goes for ownership of priceless art collections. IMO.

Rant over--going to work now!

Are these 10-year olds who are tweeting such questions? How does one reach adulthood yet not be figure out for themselves how one would handle frozen cookies.

I bake cookies from time to time, and I will put a zip lock baggie or two in the freezer to keep them fresh. When packing them in my son's lunch, I just remove 2 or 3, place them in a sandwich baggie and by lunch time, they are nicely defrosted and perfectly ready to be enjoyed. I didn't need to look this up on the internet - I just used some old fashioned common sense.

OK Stash, I really don't think that this is a credible witness. The Ashley she's talking about is not the former babysitter judging by her other tweets. I think it's her child. K-Days is some event that they were going to (not Kate's house) and she also tweeted the President, Jack Osburn, The Talk, Dr Phil, Amy Roloff, Amy Dugger, etc. to tell them about it and the water spray park they went to. I'm sure she meant to tell Kate that her baking "looks" yummy

Exactly. They don't get it. They will never get it. So Kate made cookies. Great. More power to her. I wouldn't want to bake 700 cookies, but that's just me. The issue is WHY she had to tweet a photo of all 700 of them. They can't see that the reason she does this is because she needs the praise from the fans. Look how many tweeted how awesome, amazing, incredible she is. What a fantastic Mother Earth of the Universe. She needs that ego boost. She thrives on the adulation, which is exactly why she can't pull down that Twitter. It doesn't explain, however, why she can't tell her sheeple to stop with the horrible, vile remarks about the father of her children.

Then there's Milo with her games of 20 questions. If she and Kate communicate in other ways, you'd think she would know the answers to those questions. I wonder what Milo's record is...how many questions per hour.

Dancing With The Stars rumors...

"More and more celebrities are being thrown around as possible contenders for Dancing With the Stars this fall, including a few troublemaking cable stars.

The leading contender being discussed to star in season 17 of Dancing With the Stars is celebrity chef Paula Deen. She was recently fired from her Food Network cooking show after being charged with making racial slurs in her past. Enstars previously reported that Dancing With the Stars producers were interested in getting Deen on the fall season. An insider close to the show said that the competition has a history of casting similarly troubled celebrities, such as Bristol Palin and Kate Gosselin.

Speaking of Gosselin, her husband Jon Gosselin expressed his interest in appearing on the show this fall. In a June interview with VH1, the former reality star said that Dancing With the Stars would be a perfect way to "reinvent himself" and even said that he would "probably get further" in the competition that Kate did. Producers, on the other hand, have not expressed any interest in having him on the next season."

Kate, a "troubled celebrity." Too funny!

His money, his rules. How he acquired the $ and whether he is an ethical guy is a separate issue.

Either decision has merits to it, IMO. Neither is the wrong thing to do. He got some criticism for leaving very little to his children, but that is really his business too. He has his reasons for not leaving them much that make a lot of sense. I like his wife too, she's real. They look like they could be anyone's next door neighbors.

That's not what most people were saying at all. Most people were saying it was kinda weird to count how many you baked, and that it was creepy and controlling to write directions all over a simple package of cookies for heaven sake. And also that it was bragging to take pics of it and expect a trophy.

Some people also said, rightly so, that it was too bad she holed herself away all weekend obsessed with baking cookies for a small country when there are so many other things you could be doing on these precious last few weekends of summer vacation, and save that for when the children are in school and you're home. It does not take THAT long to whip up a fresh batch of cookies and skip the freezer, which often turns them rock hard and gives them an off taste no matter how well you package them.

I mentioned before I have a person in my family who also loves to cook. For a long time now they have based their entire self worth on their cooking and on people's reactions to their cooking. This person is always in the kitchen, often skipping out of where everyone else is early to go tend to the meals, and not joining people after because there are a gazillion things to clean up in the kitchen because of their over the top excess.

Cooking for loved ones can be a wonderful thing. But not when it starts becoming so consuming it's all you're doing. Last Christmas when this person came up with yet another elaborate meal plan in the days that followed the holiday, someone was brave enough to say you know what? It's been a long week running the stove all the time, let's just order in pizza and make a salad. Some of us went to go pick up the pies, others of us threw together some delicious salads in no time. It was a wonderful meal and we all got to spend a lot more time together and clean up was a breeze.

Point being, be careful what elaborate projects one takes on in the name of one's family. Even cooking. It can very quickly turn into something that is taking time AWAY from your family instead and any benefit it serves can't always make up for time.

So true. You have to put things into perspective. I love to cook and bake, and do take pride in homemade dishes, but I can only do so much and will take help from the store if needed.
I cooked dinner for the in-laws this weekend and my salad was fresh and seasonal, my entree was homemade crab cakes from jumbo lump fresh from the Chesapeake, with a corn and tomato salsa and 2 (count 'em two!) sauces (lemon caper and poblano cream).
And then, I was DONE with it. I served frozen fries to go along side and dessert was a selection of gelato and sherbet.
My inner "chef" wanted to push through and make a key lime cheesecake, but I'd had enough.
You know what? The fries sucked (Alexia sweet potato waffle) but they loved dessert, and overall the meal was lovely, even though I didn't make it all myself.

Yes exactly. I often have grand ideas for what I'd love to cook or bake every day but I just am not willing to devote the time to it at the expense of others. I do I want to be stuck in the kitchen all weekend when I could be with family and friends.

I'm glad that I know an obsessed cook, because it's allowed me to see that no matter how beautiful the end product is, it's not always worth the time away. I have also seen how others react. People don't always like their kitchens being taken over and every pot and pan being used. People also don't like lists with demands for all kinds of ingredients to be on hand, even simple ones, when you could just grill up some hamburgers and corn and call it a day.

I also try to include others when I cook to make it a social thing. The cook I know is controlling and gets irritated when others help, making this issue worse.

This cooking thing really strikes a chord with me because I have been on the receiving end of someone like this, and it can be sad for a child. Kids really don't care how hard you worked on what you make as long as it's edible, they just don't. And at the end of the day adults just want to chit chat, not see you take over their kitchen.

Isn't it interesting that last year was the first full year with no network to pick up TFW's hair care bills, and her last year of NYC hair care. She still went in for her hair fry every 6 weeks or so in 2012, and then, once 2012 taxes had to be filed this spring, she never mentioned going again. I'm sure she has an accountant, and I bet that accountant had to claim those free hair care sessions on her taxes. When you're getting hundreds of dollars in comped services, and you have to pay taxes on the full value of those services, they suddenly don' t look like such a good deal, do they? I bet she was shocked at how much she ended up having to pay for her "free" hair care. No more Ted Gibson salon. Or maybe Jason got tired to working for her for free. Bet she didn't even tip.
She went from having her hair done at Ted Gibson to having someone else (read: mediocre) do it. And you're right, she went from Nobu and Fig and Olive nights with her celeb hairdresser and celeb makeup artist friend to eating with the kids at Chipotle. She went from a bestselling book (actually written by Beth) to what could be the worst-selling cookbook of all time. From guest hosting on The View to a local Zumba fundraiser. From TLC's legal fighting her battles to Bullyville. No big vacations, no lavish birthday parties, baking cookies instead of having cupcakes overnighted from Georgetown Cupcakes. Oh, yes, the mighty have fallen. And she's not done falling yet.

Yeah um, no.

And I would feel just downright weird asking for that kind of help from friends or even family. Maybe a few hours, cookie decorating parties can be fun for a few hours, but asking someone to give up SEVEN HOURS on a Sunday? That's greedy and over the top and exploitive of someone's generosity. If someone offered I guess maybe, but the first thing I would ask is oh you don't have other plans I don't want to tie up half your weekend! And take them out for a nice dinner afterward.

Or just bake cookies fresh as you go because you don't WORK.

What an interesting weekend, well not really, in the land of TFW. On Saturday day/night she seemed to have some of the kids for shopping/Chipotle. But on Sunday, perhaps all were gone as she and 2 'friends' baked for 7 hours (what an absolute waste of a summer weekend day for a woman who can bake at whim all year long). Or who baked, as in Katespeak, it was 3 girls. Does she really refer to grown women as girls? Poor Milo, caught up by her crush, can't even blather on about how Kate does it all! Then again, if half the kids were home, where were they while the 'girls' played Betty Crocker for 7 hours? Swimming alone in the pool? Oh, it's a crazy, and usually half truthful, life.

How does anyone know that she still doesn't get her hair done in NY or go to Fig and Olive? I think she finally got smart and learned to keep her big trap shut about her little beauty treatment vacations instead of bragging about it. I highly doubt she would take a step down and get some mediocre salon in PA to get that color of Hollywood blonde that only Jason can achieve and that she covets so much. She has to keep that blonde going just in case the talk show finally comes a knockin'. hee hee.

Oh yeah def remember Richard Hatch. He got three years. I believe he didn't claim some or all of his winnings. Prize money and awards are all supposed to be claimed on your taxes. If I'm not mistaken, his story was that CBS told him they took care of the taxes. Of course it should have dawned on him that didn't happen when he got all of the one million! LOL

Three years is plenty and he had a kid too I believe, but I'm not sure this is hitting the general public yet. THIRTY YEARS. That is serious, serious time. You would have to really TRY to get 30 years these days.

In Jon and Kate's Lane contract taxes were all spelled out, Lane was supposed to cover it for them. I call that the Richard Hatch clause.

I really think Jason finally shut her down and realized he's getting none of the benefit and she's getting all of the benefit. What was he supposed to do, style her hair in perpetuity? Geez, what greed.

IMO.
________________________________________________It's called living in a Capitalist Society.
Does the foundation do "SOME" good? Really?
The kind of wealth that this ONE person controls is HIS wealth, along with whatever priceless art collections HE might own.
And the housing market "frenzy" is NOT unique to Seattle.

TFW hit reply to the second question but I think she meant to answer the first one..do you have a Katherine helping you?...LOL no, two friends did. That's why Milo said oh so there is no Katherine. TFW was poo pooing the idea of having Ktherine (as if that never happened) and unwittingly confirmed the fact that she didn't bake alone. It's true it can be very expensive. I priced out some sugar cookies I made once and was surprised that it came to about 3-4 bucks, the same as buying them in the store. Once you start adding things like nuts it's even worse. I could get cheaper flour and other ingredients but then they wouldn't taste right. Factor in utilities to run your mixer and oven all afternoon. Not to mention running your oven all day in summer makes your air conditioning work harder if you have it. Best to save this project for the winter. Usually when you make things at home it's cheaper. Not the case with cookies. Since part of TFW's shtick is saving money maybe she should remind the fans to just watch the grocery ads and pick up some cookies when they are two for four bucks or some other similar sale.

That's TFW's word play again. She just said "no" to the question about Katherine helping her in the kitchen. Well I DON'T think Katherine helped her in the kitchen at this stage, I think she just made the meals and dropped them off. That's not helping in the kitchen, that's prepared meals. And I doubt Katherine's job is to spend her Sundays making cookies. She is a chef, not a baker. Also who knows if they even still use Katherine now, but they did in the past.

There is proof Katherine was there at least at some point, it's in Robert's book. There are emails exchanged about Katherine, and someone was able to sleuth around and verify that that person is indeed a professional chef who even does classes. So why put TFW on the spot like that when that's true? As I said last night, Milo is so awkward.

That's what was so funny about Milo's tweet to Kate. She was so sure that Kate (and the kids...the "we") did everything themselves, that she thought she'd mock the non-fans. It totally backfired on her when Kate admitted she had adult help. I think Milo was stunned and had no retort, except for "I'm happy you had help 4 a change." It's all she could come up with! Talk about the proverbial egg on the face!

The expense of baking cookies. The kids could buy a dessert at school for 50 to 85 cents a day. Say they each bought a 50-cent cookie. That's 4 four dollars a day, 20 dollars a week. Could she spot them a 20 for dessert at school? Is that too much money? Considering the cost of baking, with the ingredients, the time, the prep, wouldn't it seem that would be much easier in the long run?

Instead, she makes them take the long way through her main site where you get no less than three splashed advertisements to buy her crookbook. If you're lucky, you'll notice the contact button hidden up there in the corner and realize that's how you find your way to her email.

TFW is former and transparent and loves to bait and switch. If you respect your blog readers in the long run people will stick with you. But if you play games with them, baiting and switching and really just trying to get them to buy your crap, they will see through it soon enough and won't stick around long.

Guess not a lot of takers for T.V. and spokesperson opportunities lately. That well has run dry. Her last appearance was for that charity for the car accident and that was just because the woman helping out with it happened to be an obsessed fan.

We have a friend who is "famous" for her Christmas cookies.

She bakes for months ahead of the season. She arranges very attractive platters of cookies with an impressive variety of special recipes. She delivers them with sweet thank you notes for your contribution to her life.

It is such a kind idea augmented with tremendous effort.

But, the cookies taste like "freezer" -- every year, it is the same frozen flavor. They are beautiful, but inedible.

I guess I could mention it to her, but I am a coward about such honesty.

I am not impressed with TFW's assembly line cookies. I agree with Orange Crusher -- bake a small, fresh batch and make the house smell like a home.

It's pretty obvious to me that if there isn't someone around telling Kate what to do she just don't know what to do. She's got a blog but can't figure out what to put on it to it's Ask Kate, week in, week out. How about some organizational tips from the most organized mom in the universe? Is she never out and about and moved by some sight/something that's happening in the real world; a beautiful sunrise, a wacky driver, someone feeding the pigeons for heaven's sake?!?!

If you're so wrapped up in yourself and you lack even an ounce of empathy it's no wonder when you're out you notice nothing happening that you could expound upon for your blog.

This is an excerpt from the PR release sent out by HCI when to book was announced:

"This mom-of-eight also has surprises in store during the months before her book is published. “I plan on making some recipes available that are not in the book and also share some traditions and tips along the way. So watch my Twitter @Kateplusmy8 and my website http://www.kateplusmy8.com for these.”

http://www.prweb.com/releases/2013/3/prweb10573041.htm

She hasn't posted a single recipe since that Mediterranean wrap thing that she posted in Feb. Don't know if she meant cooking tips and tradtions, but there haven't been any of those either.

The only traditions she mentioned were pictures of the flags along the driveway and her flag cake. Oh, forgot one, the tradition of swimming in the pool, and pictures of that.

Perhaps TFW should go re-read her press release, because she's certainly not living up to it.

Blogging is another one of TFW's weak spots; she has no spontaneity, no writing skils. Several years ago I started a travel blog, mainly as a place to record our trips. Some of my friends write blogs; most have moved to Facebook, a more casual, postcard as I think, style of writing and picture posting. Which is what I also do now, my life is fine, but no reason to write about it for strangers. Blogs are hard work, and even harder to make a commercial success of one. TFW wants the payout, and while hers could be way interesting if she made the effort, the operative word is effort. So her blog sucks.

Wouldn't it be funny if no one sent her any questions? Last time she had an "Ask Kate", via email which was back in May, it took her two days to answers questions and she only answered 14 of them.

She also had to remind her tweeties several times during the day to send in questions. Then she explained the delay:

15 MayKate Gosselin @Kateplusmy8
The 'Ask Kate' questions POURED IN.. I'm still answering them... I'll post on http://t.co/lLIAaeYBWJ ASAP!

Kate Gosselin @Kateplusmy8
So..I am sorry for the delay, but I'm still working on answering/posting the answers to your 'Ask Kate' questions... tomorrow, promise!

How hard could it have been to answer 14 questions? Of course, she probably did receive more and spent most of the time picking and choosing which ones she wanted to answer.

BTW, she forgot to tell them to put "Ask Kate" in the subject line of their emails.

She sold 5 books since she posted the cookie pictures. HCI must really be laying on the pressure now.

Since she has the time to read emails and answer questions today, I wonder if Jon has the kids all day, since it is Tuesday.

Hi Susie, I posted a comment about Mr and Mrs Giudice using their first names from the indictment. Someone made an interesting assumption that his actual real name was an ethnic slur. As the indictment makes clear, Joe is his nickname, but apparently the only name Real Housewife viewers know him by.
I am fascinated about how this court case will play out.
Kinda sorta related: when Michael Vick was prosecuted in the dogfighting case, the US attorneys were very clear they were not going to make any sort of deal without jail time. They wanted to have a very visible well known person serve time for dogfighting to get the message out, this is unacceptable. Joe Smith down the block might get prosecuted too, but only people who know him would care. The federal court that prosecuted this is in my region and there was lots of news coverage.
I am thinking because Mr and Mrs Giudice are so well known, this will be another case where prosecutors will want to show that if you commit tax and bank fraud there will be jail time as a result. It will be fascinating to follow.
Remember your history. Al Capone never served time for murder or bootlegging. He served prison time for tax fraud, failing to report his income from his illegal activities.

The fans, who somehow knew that there was an "Ask Kate" Q&A coming up but somehow missed the fact that TFW has had a cookbook available for pre-order for 4 months, will fuss and swoon and tell one another that everyone on their gift lists will be getting this book for Christmas, and it will replace the Bible as their go-to book of wisdom. Oy.

The rest of the questions will all be variations of "When will you be coming back to TV?" Kate will reply that she's just too busy, but she'll try ever so hard to find the time in her oh-so-hectic schedule to fit in a hit TV show or two.

Here is a golden opportunity for TFW (that effin' wife) to do something nice for someone that cannot afford food.

--------------------

I was thinking about this. If I could easily afford to take some of my kids out to eat a few times a week and I had a gift card, I'd take a look around the restaurant to see if there was a family there who might really need to use the card. Or, I'd wait outside the restaurant for a few minutes, watch for a family to go in, give them the card, tell them to enjoy their meal, and then leave. No fanfare. I certainly wouldn't tweet that I had a gift card. Who does that? Unless, of course the card came from the restaurant in return for promoting them.

**********************************

How would you decide which family "really needed" the card? I'm sorry, but I would be offended if a stranger did that to me, not grateful. It's incredibly patronizing. "Oh, you look too poor to afford the meal. Allow me to buy it for you because I am so noble."

*******

Anon, I don't think the poster was trying to be patronizing at all. It's too bad you took it that way.

Why would anyone CHOOSE to be offended by a random act of kindness?

Why not instead CHOOSE to be grateful, moved and inspired and just pay it forward if you didn't need the gift?

I just don't understand. Has political correctness gotten so out of hand that people are now choosing to be offended by kindness and generosity?

What a world!

*****
And this is exactly why I stopped watching DWTS several seasons ago. It was the season that had Tom Delay on. I was disgusted beyond belief, stopped watching and have yet to have any desire to watch it again. If they have Paula Deen on, that will only solidify my avoidance of this show. However, I don't care if others watch and enjoy it. I'm just tired of it being a stop over for disgraced or fallen stars, trying to shine up their tarnished image. Perhaps those are the only stars they can get?

When my son was still in grade school, his school did cookie dough fundraisers too - you would receive a box with a double layer of pre-formed cookies, ready to place on a cookie sheet and bake. I always prefer homemade, but these were pretty good too.

I have no problem with frozen cookies. My mom and I used to pre-bake for Christmas, starting about October. They were still delicious, mainly because they were in airtight containers and put in a freezer that wasn't opened all the time.

I have noticed that since Robert outed her on so many lies, she's not too quick these days to spout off those big, outrageous whoppers. I'm sure she would love to thrill her tweeties with tales of being room mom at school and going on the field trips and all. She knows better, thanks to a few posters here who know the truth. She wisely only mentions functions she actually attends.

As far as Katherine, I will give TFW the benefit of a doubt and say she probably no longer uses her. I think that may have been a TLC provided perk as long as the show was on the air. I don't see TFW parting with her own moldy money to pay for chef service. Hence, the kids now getting to eat 21 cans of beans casserole and chicken dishes made with 1 whole boneless breast to feed 8 kids. But Milo should by no means think TFW just denied ever having Katherine. No, no, no, no. The numerous back and forth emails between TFW and her chef make it quite evident TFW did very little cooking for her family. The lists upon lists of things for the "help" to do, showed how TFW delegated almost every household responsibility to someone else other than herself.

I can very easily afford to eat at a restaurant, and I don't appear to be destitute. Not long ago, two of my kids and I were having breakfast at a local restaurant. When I went to pay the bill, the server said that someone had taken care of it. I looked puzzled...why? She said that the person who took care of the bill said that you looked like such a nice family. I was surprised and it was such a wonderful gesture. Since the restaurant was full, I had no idea who had paid so I couldn't thank them. I'll always remember that, and I try to do the same. I wasn't offended by any means. In fact, just the opposite is true. It was such a nice thing to do, and we were very appreciative. In this day and age when so many people think only of themselves, it was good to know that there are still some left who pay it forward.

I agree with you, Mel.

Like the Sunday papers's Parade magazine. How is it that fan questions just happen to coincide with a star's new movie or cd release?

I just don't understand. Has political correctness gotten so out of hand that people are now choosing to be offended by kindness and generosity?

I just hope that society never gets to the point where people stop being kind or generous to one another out of fear of offending someone else, or because it's just not politically correct to do so. What a screwed up world that would be!

I'm not sure Kate and the Krows yet understand the difference between threats/bullying and giving opinions.

How would you decide which family "really needed" the card? I'm sorry, but I would be offended if a stranger did that to me, not grateful. It's incredibly patronizing. "Oh, you look too poor to afford the meal. Allow me to buy it for you because I am so noble."

************************************************

I respectfully disagree.

There is far worse things that a person could do to another. I mean, if a person spat on the gift card, and threw it at me with a mighty curse word, I might get angry.

Otherwise, I think that it is touching that someone cared enough to do something nice for me.

I would graciously accept the person's kindness & generousity, and then quietly, pay it forward to a senior citizen, a young couple (with or without a family), or to a teenager.

If I was as wealthy as TFW, I would be equally as greatful, and do the same as above.

Wealthy people like TFW generate bad ju-ju by continuously taking, and taking, and taking.

To me, it's just bad form and no way to live life properly with a good conscience.

If Nikki's hoping to be Kate's new PR person, she should at least get her month's correct. Next month is August, the book won't be out until the end of September.

Hmm-I just realized that Kate miss a BIG PR move last Friday. In addition to tweeting a picture of her baking, she could've tweeted:

"Only 88 days more days until Love Is In The Mix is published. Pre-order NOW!"

That's a big thing in coffee shops where I live. You stop for your morning coffee and randomly pay for the person behind you no matter what they look like.

I loved your restaurant story too. Reinforces faith in humanity. :D

What a screwed up world indeed. But Anon's post had me wondering if that's already started happening. I sincerely hope it's not.

Oh and btw, bahahahahahahaha on the placenta reference in (185). Too funny.

TFW is still grifting and my bet is that Chipotle gave her gift cards due to all her mentions on Twitter. She HAS to disclose that she did not pay for the meal, if she is doing mentions for swag/gift cards/insert freebie.
She is complying with the spirit of the law, but not the letter.

Sorry, in my post #191, I miscalculated. She should have made that announcement on June 28, not last Friday. I lost a whole month there when calculating the 88 days.

Look, everyone, the fans would really appreciate it if we'd just own up to our jealousy of TFW. Now, I think we can all agree to the following:

1. We're jealous of TFW's thriving media career. It's only a matter of time until she has an Emmy on her mantel, and that just makes us green with envy.
2. We are jealous of TFW's happy, successful marriage. So many people these days just walk away the first time the spouse disagrees with their choices. Kudos to TFW for sticking it out and working on the marriage instead of breaking up her family and alienating Jon from the kids just so she can chase fame.
3. We're jealous of TFW for her ability to sell out a celebrity cruise and provide a free cruise and a big, fat paycheck for her family. Not all celebs are so popular!
4. We're jealous that she can take her kids out for cheap Mexican food. I know I sure get sick of my DH saying, "Let's go somewhere nice".
5. We're jealous of TFW's natural grace and coordination.
6. We're jealous of TFW's natural good looks. Too many women resort to faking it these days, trying to turn themselves into human Barbie dolls. Bleached hair, bleached teeth, fake tans, tummy tucks, implants, lipo... TFW keeps it real!
7. We're jealous of all the people that fill TFW's life. It's so wonderful for the kids to be surrounded by loving friends and family. It's not good to keep kids isolated, and TFW sure does make sure they have plenty of affection from and interaction with loved ones.
8. Most of all, we're jealous of TFW's sterling reputation. Everyone loves her! Her sparkling wit, her kind words and deeds, her selflessness. Why, even Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen praised her on their shows. Your character has to really stand out for them to take the time to call attention to it.

There, we've owned it. Now don't we all feel better?

I think what a lot of you who have given away a coupon, paid for others or had your meal paid for are simply talking about what used
(?) to be a catch phrase: "Random Acts of Kindness."

It can include giving the person in line in front of you a bit of money because they are short or neighbor who helps dig you out after a
snowstorm, you get my drift.

Not exactly to be confused with delivering bags of your excess zuchinni to your neighbors in the dead of night, heh, heh.
