Karen Dotrice: 'I’ve never really wanted any of my children to become child actors like me'

Saving Mr. Banks is an endearing film now in theaters about Walt Disney’s struggle to acquire the rights to a children’s author’s beloved books, but the actor who played Jane in ‘Mary Poppins’ says child actors are who really need saving

Another child actor is all grown up and joining the long list of former child stars disclosing all was not as cheery as it seemed. Karen Dotrice won hearts as Jane in the 1963 film ‘Mary Poppins. The brilliant Sherman brothers’ song “The Perfect Nanny,” in which Jane reads an advertisement describing the kind of caretaker any child would long for, is particularly sweet (and funny).

Doctrice, who left show business as a teenager, had this to say about child stardom:

“If I’d had my way, I’d still never have done any of those films, because kids should be kids. They should be doing their homework, or outside riding horses. They should be learning and growing at their own pace – and learning things at the right time, rather than when it’s convenient for others. It’s just not normal for a child to have that kind of focus on them and then trot off into life thinking that everyone’s going to pamper them and treat them as if they’re ‘special’. The fact is that if you’re living in a Justin Bieberesque type world surrounded by a bunch of yes people, the odds are you’re going to struggle in later life. That’s why I’ve never really wanted any of my children to become child actors like me. I’ve seen a lot of my peers go through terrible times and have to deal with all sorts of demons.”

Thank you, Karen for your insight.

Does this mean, admin, that you are finally seeing that NO kids should be on television, especially reality tv, regardless of their 'talents'?

If enough of us support the 'no children on tv/movies' wave, perhaps we could make a difference! Let's not just 'accept' that kids are going to be put to work to make adults money. Let's DO something about it. Make our voices heard. Break the so-called status quo.

Another story of regret from a former child actor. What makes Kate think that pushing her kids in front of a camera will make them any more special to her or anyone else for that matter? It just can't be good for their self-image. She'd better be ready for some questions from them when they grow up and leave home, like - wasn't I good enough just being myself?

Chef - sorry to hear you're ill. I hope its not too severe. Get well soon.

And about Julia Child, she was great for making names up for her dishes. She could make a peanut butter sandwich sound fancy. She said they used to put gravy browning mixed with water in the wine bottles to give it the appearance of red wine for her show The French Chef. She called it a nice bottle of Chateau Gravée Mastere and no one noticed she'd said it. haha!

Remember when they used to close down museums, parks, etc for filming? That always used to concern me greatly in terms of what Karen is talking about, a child always hearing "yes." It concerned me the kids would think everything should close for them, or they deserve people to bend over backwards for them because they are so special. It is a dangerous message to send a child. It really makes sense what Jon was just saying about the kids having trouble socially. How can they fit in with other kids when they've had such a strange upbringing?

Also can I just say Karen seems so awesome from any interview I've seen of her and I love that she created a new word, Bieberesque! That is just cool.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 7

I wonder what Kate would do if the kids say something similar to what Karen just said when they grow up. It's bound to happen. All eight of them are perfectly content with every single aspect of their childhood? The odds are slim even for kids NOT on T.V., lol!

I think steam might actually come out of her ears if they blow the whistle.

It seems to be a priority of most good parents is to teach kids that they in fact don't deserve special treatment and that it is rude and uncouth to demand it. That polite people are humble, kind and don't make ridiculous demands. I'm not sure how you do that when your child is a star and everyone around them is teaching them exactly the opposite. It must be so frustrating for any parent who doesn't want them to be a part of that world.

In fact, I think this mentality even messes up some famous adults. I think you have to be very firmly grounded to be able to withstand this sort of artificial environment without it basically ruining you.

Even the aristocratic Diana understood that while her sons bore princely titles, they would darn well stand in line for the rides like all the other children. She did her best to keep their lives normal. I am guessing her sons are glad they learned they weren't THAT special.

Princess Anne rejected the idea of giving her children titles of any sort, so they were free to live in the real world more than in the royal world. I still say it was the best gift she ever gave them. "You are Peter and Zara. Go be happy."

if only parents with stars and dollar signs in their eyes could just let their kids grow up doing normal kid things.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 11

I like the decisions Diana made for those boys. They both talk about how she inspired in them a passion for helping the needy and they both have put their money where their mouth is, with numerous charities especially in Africa and military service. Prince Harry just participated in a "race" to the south pole to benefit wounded soldiers.

I heard that Zara has rejected all royal "perks" so to speak, is that true? Says a lot about priorities. Being born royalty is a burden you don't ask for. It's not the same as being an adult and voluntarily marrying into it, as Kate has. However as good as I think she is with little George, I don't think I would choose that lifestyle for my child. I feel sorry for George when I see photos of him, his destiny is arranged and he's still on breast milk. Zara is lucky in that she's removed enough from the line of succession to be able to renounce it.

Admin-When I click the link in your post to read the article about Karen Dotrice, it doesn't work for me. For any others having the same problem, here is the link:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/disney/10481596/Mary-Poppins-child-star-Karen-Dotrice-If-Id-had-my-way-Id-never-have-done-any-of-those-films.html

Since Karen grew up in a family of actors, show business was the family's life. It's refreshing to see that she realized that after making several films, she realized it just wasn't for her and she left the business. Apparently, her parents were okay with that and let her make that decision. She also wasn't the sole support of her parents, as many other childhood stars were.

I have no problem with a child being an actor, as long as it is what the child wants to do, not what the parents decide the child should do. It should always be the child's decision. I think the reason some child actors survived growing up in the business, is because they had parents who always thought of their child as a child first--not as a meal ticket or family breadwinner. They still made sure that their child had a childhood and other interests. Acting may have been a part of their childhood, but it wasn't their WHOLE childhood.

When Kate said "The show is our life, and our life is the show", just shows how little her children's childhood meant to her. It was all for the show and the show must go on no matter what.

Parents who use their children to garner their own fame are the most despicable parents in my book. And yes, that includes Jon. But at least he is not now using his children to further his career, like Kate is. Hopefully, he has seen the error of his ways.

Kate bases her whole career on her children. Her website and twitter can't be just Kate Gosselin. She must have the children included by adding the "plusmy8". Unfortunately, she is nothing without those children, and she knows it, and she'll keep on using them to support her quest for fame and money.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 13

A key component to child stars turning out normal appears to be that their parents kept their day jobs and they didn't feel pressure to support the family. Perhaps it's not actually being on camera that is so harmful but the very adult pressure it puts on a little child to provide that is the most damaging. Take away that component and it appears to remove a lot of the dysfunction associated with many of the troubled child stars.

Of the few children who have said they are perfectly happy with their childhoods as stars, no complaints, their parents almost always kept their day jobs. The key seems to be to keep acting a game like any other thing a child does, and not a "career," obligation, or responsibility to support the family.

Gail said... 14

It should always be the child's decision.

Children are too young to make such life changing decisions. That's what parents are for.

Gail said... 15

Children should be playing games with age appropriate friends. Being on a set is certainly no game and I can't imagine any child who thinks it is. Perhaps they'd find it 'fun' for the first couple of hours, or maybe even the first day. After that? Highly unlikely.

I'm only repeating what some child actors have said. There is no denying that a few child actors, Fred Savage being one of them, insist that they had a good time being a child actor and have nothing bad to say about it.

What I'm saying is why is that? Well, the common demonimor I've found is that none of those kids felt "pressure" to act. It was fun, a game to them. This is only what they said. Fred Savage's father, for example, never quit his job. I believe he was in real estate, and kept it going even after Wonder Years was a massive hit and he could have quit.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 17

To add to that I was actually kind of annoyed with Fred Savage's recent interview where he seemed to be sort of poo pooing people who complained about child stardom and saying hey I turned out fine stop saying child stardom is some terrible thing! He failed to acknowledge everything that went so right for him that isn't the case for all kids--his dad keeping his day job, good parents, his money protected, etc. Well of course he turned out fine if everyone around him was so committed to protecting him. The problem is that's not always the case for many kids.

Denominator haha terrible typo!

There was a tidbit on BlindGossip the other day about a former studio president. He had recently started a children's shelter and clinic in Cambodia. He was wrestling with quitting Hollywood and devoting all his time to the shelter. One day, while in Cambodia and learning that 5 of the children in the shelter came down with typhoid, an assistant for a big star called. They said the food and brand of bottled water on the private plane the studio had chartered for the star was not acceptable. The star grabbed the phone from the assistant and said "Scott, my life isn't supposed to be this difficult." Needless to say, that egotistical jerk of a star cemented Scott's decision.

And her "When anyone wants to stop filming, we will." Jon wanted to stop at one point, and they "ironed" it out, meaning she bulldozed to continue. Also, I find it hard to believe that all 8, count 'em 8, kids want to continue filming First of all, I am sure she would never ask them, and if she did, they would be under the penalty of severeness to continue.

The kids did not choose to be on TV or to continue. Was always about what Kate wanted, and they were and will be filmed at any time Kate can scrounge a show, segment, etc.. Katie Couric and Wife Swap were clear examples that some of the kids did not enjoy the experience. At all.

I think they are old enough now to have a choice in filming, and I hope Jon pursues this in Family Court, if she tries this again. A simple question by the Judge in chambers with each child individually could determine if all 8 want to continue filming. There are no long term contracts the Judge would need to consider at this juncture.

If Kate wants to continue filming solo, I don't care. Go for it. But as you noted, she knows she is nothing without the kids.

Ron Howard (little Oppie) has spoken frequently about being a child star, maintaining a happy marriage in Hollywood and a prolonged celebrity career.

He is an example of a child actor who stayed grounded. He gives his father and other adults in his life the credit. He also acknowledges that he was fortunate.

Princess Diana and her boys did have security and didn't wait in line. However, she was incredibly gracious and kind to everyone and the boys were very well mannered. She was dressed just like all the other moms...no high heels or slutwear for her...and the guests oogled a little, smiled, waved...but no one that I saw approached the family EVER seen to make her kids cry at Disney. I think that is the reason disney doesn't want those episodes released. She turned the "Happiest Place on Earth" into a miserable cry fest over a drop of ice cream, and I suspect that didn't sit well with the Disney folks.

Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas.
Chef, feel better soon, take care. Hope everyone took the flu vaccine.

I think I read here a few days ago that Kate said she would be ok if any of her kids write a tell-all. Yeah, right.

Jon is right, how can those kids have social skills if they are locked in that compound for months over the summer and most holiday breaks.
School is basically the only place they get to interact with others. This is not going to turn out good. They already feel entitled because that is how they see their mother act. Jon tries his best to get them out the house when he has visitation and Kate hates that. She is very afraid one of them is going to talk about what goes on in their little world behind the gates. I really thought by now that Mady would be the one to spill the beans, she said a lot on CWS about the work, work, work but we all know it has got to be much worse. It brought tears to Kendra. Would love to see the film on the cutting room floor.

Why is everyone so afraid of exposing this woman? Very few people have come forward. This has always been a problem for me. If she were my daughter, I would have done an intervention a long time ago, geez, all the way back to the tummy tuck, the change in appearance and shutting out her own brother.

Kate became unstable a long time ago and it scares me when people say she can go back into nursing.

We just had a horrible thing happen last night, south of New Orleans. A former employee, an RN that worked at Ochsner Hospital in Raceland, La went on a shooting spree.
The CEO of Ochsner is dead, his wife is fighting for her life. A member of the Council is in critical condition, his wife dead. The gunman is dead after he took his own life and his wife was found dead at their home. All because he was fired for strange behavior and severe mood swings. Details are still coming in. 3 hospitals in the small community had to be locked down.

Just never know when someone who can lead a productive life after being diagnosed with a mental illness is going snap. Medication and therapy is their only salvation. They are usually the last one to see that they need help because they are in denial. So said, just tragic.

Everyone have a great New Year, wishing you happiness and good health.

Kate is very into herself- very focused on how she looks. Her new boobies had to be shown off. She's like a child.
Same for her French nails. The way she was constantly waving her fingers in front of her face was because she's so aware of the nails. Notice that she always sat with her hands in her lap when on the couch prior to the nail job.
It's juvenile behavior- we get it, you got new huge boobs and nail tips, and we got over it pretty quickly.

The kids have been off TV for more than 2 years now, and have, most likely, forgotten much of the drudgery of filming. I'm sure Kate has used the past 2+ years to "recondition" them, showing them videos of them (seemingly) having fun and going places. She can remind them of all the great things they used to be able to do when they were filming, and how they can't afford to do such things without a show. She won't let the tups take lessons or participate in extracurricular activities, but they can watch shows of them doing gymnastics and baseball when they were filming. She won't take them on vacation (even though she has plenty of money to do so), but she makes sure they watch tapes of all the trips they took on TLC's dime. When they (perhaps) say they miss filming, it is because she has fed them a steady diet of "Oh, how wonderful our lives were when we had a show". Sooner or later, they become conditioned to it. They forget the work and remember what she wants them to remember--all the perks. This is what she wants, of course, but now she's running into something she didn't expect. She is dealing with the fact that nobody wants to film them. Bet she didn't see that one coming.
As I said in the last thread, I finally watched some K+8. Episodes. Well, as much as I could take. And there is nothing special about the Gs. Nothing entertaining, nothing unique. Yeah, there's a set of sextuplets, but the days of struggling with 6 toddlers are over, and now what? They are just a bunch of ordinary kids. Doing what we can watch our own kids do every day. Why bother watching them?
Perhaps their lack of entertainment value was the reason TLC resorted to sending them on nonstop trips. We could watch something we don't get to do every day. They didn't realize that most people are bored to tears watching someone else's vacation videos. So, they upped the drama. Another bad call--nobody likes a shrew. So they were left with nothing, and finally realized that and cancelled the show.
What does Kate think they are going to do on a new show? All they have is what was done before, and that failed miserably. Any new show would be just the same, and would also fail miserably. What network wants to revisit a premise that has already failed? She is delusional enough to think they could somehow make it work, but network execs aren't that stupid. They are looking for the next new thing, not the stale, old thing. Kate will never accept that it is over, and that is too bad. It keeps her from moving on to new things. She's waiting for the day that her new experiences will be filmed, and she's missing out as a result. So are the kids. Let's hope they Jon can keep them from missing out on too much.

She's just doing the copyright thing so if someone uses a photo she can demand money or sue. Who cares. Her photos suck anyway. Oh, but she is just fine with an internet site copying her tweets and writing about them.

ITA she has essentially brainwashed those kids to miss filming. They are too young to remember much of anything except Kate's pounding into their impressionable minds about filming and traveling. She is one sicko.

I read different legal opinions regarding copyright law. No idea if that is her basis to sue Robert, but a case can be made regarding personal journals. Just don't know which weighs more, her right to her journals or the fact that she threw them out. Remember, it was kind of the same thing with Sen. John Edwards and the sex tape that was taken from his girlfriend's trash. The judge ruled the tape had to be returned. Anyway, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Robert, Kate and Jon.

All of Hawaii was open to the public, Lego Land, Dutch Wonderland, Crayola, Sesame, Thomas, Hands on House, I could go on and on.

They may have gotten special treatment at all these places, but they were not SHUT down.

Thanks, Sara

Greedy, I didn't think it was bragging at all. It was rejoicing at two unexpected gifts - a newfound relative for your son, and a trip that you wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise. You sounded quite grateful for both. I'm glad you shared as I'm positive many here are excited along with you for your delightful surprise. What a blessing!

Layla, your analysis is very accurate - other peoples vacation movies are BORING. and watching our own children, or our own nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors grandkids, etc is so much more interesting than kids on TV. Frankly, I was bored by the premise of early J&I+8. I took care of my own babies, I did not need to watch strangers wrangle their herd of children. Add in that TFMJG was ” difficult” to put it mildly, no producer is going to come calling for her.

Whoa TFW has been quiet since she gave that shout out of hugs and kisses to our very own Lee Lee (JEALOUS, how did this happen no fair!!!)

=====

Could be that the vetting detective or one of the minions sent her a heads up that the person to whom she sent the hugs and kisses is actually a non-fan, and is now BLOCKED!

How embarrassing for Kate. She got punked.

My gosh -- the one youngish fan is hung up on "bullies." Yet, she comes down hard on celebrities, Bieber for one, writing unflattering things about him and his fans. The hypocrisy is as plain as the nose on the face. I don't understand that they don't see that what they are doing to other celebrities is exactly the same thing that gets them all worked up over Kate's "haters."

They just don't seem to get it, and that's what makes one wonder about the mindset (and logical thinking) of the sheeple. They can't look at themselves in the mirror and think..."gee, I'm doing exactly the same thing to other celebrities that I'm accusing Kate's bullies and trolls of doing." You just have to shake your head...

I still don't get what Kate thought she was accomplishing by dressing like a hooker, but then again, I don't get her at all. The constant shorts and heels, with boobies hanging out, just showed how shallow, trashy, and inconsiderate she was of her kids, in my opinion.
&&&&

Robert said in the book that Kate's low rent hooker phase was a TLC sanctioned ploy. Whomever thought this was a good idea should be fired, asap. Having Kate running around in spike heels, booty shorts and the huge, new implants (she vehemently denied getting) hanging out of a too small halter- did NOTHING to endear her to the public. She always looked like she was emerging after a rough night on skid row.

He also said Kate is obsessed with looks and is as superficial as they come. She judges everyone by their looks, she's extremely judgemental about appearances. Crying because one of her sons needed glasses confirms this. So does her freaking over an ice cream drip.

Because of this, I tend to think Milo is the the fake fan Robert was alluding to. Milo seems to be the only one who is fixated on Kate's looks and body. IMO, Kate is behind "Milo" in some way and uses her/it to create buzz about her Dr. Glassman created Frankenbody.

Just the other day, Jennifer Lopez told someone she's never had any plastic surgery, ever. A quick look at a picture of Jen from 1995 shows that she has had expert, but extensive work on her nose. I think it's reprehensible for celebrities to do this, especially when a new slim nose or two almost DD boobs are staring you in the face. A nose and boobs those people did not have several years ago. They all do it, though. Very few celebs admit their plastic surgery.

I think she surely MUST have had someone picking out her clothes at that point. I think she told them she wanted to go Hollywood, and that was the result. Not all stylists are made equal.

Kate was grifting Anne Taylor and White House Black Market at the time. At the very least.
I actually wonder what the producers were thinking. The show was built around this Christian couple, and then there's Kate and her new boobs, manipedi, hooker heels, tanned hyde, veneers, bleached blonde hair. How does that play to the audience that MADE them a success?
I would have said, "Kate, honey, tone it down a tad, you look desperate".

Wasn't the museum in Philly shut down for the gosselins? Or maybe not shut down, but the areas the gosselins were in for filming were closed to others. I seem to remember the area they were in being cordoned off, and people calling to TFW from the other side of the rope.

Mel said... 56

I suppose shutting the place down was easier for filming, since they wouldn't have to get consent from random strangers to broadcast them on national tv.

Love is the answer.

Is Robert ever going to publish the book? I am not trying to be mean, but Robert, either pull the trigger or put it back into the holster!

The suspense and waiting has went on too long!

It doesn't matter if there were her personal journals in the trash. She threw them away herself or ordered the staff or kids to do it for her. The can was taken to the road for the garbage man to pick up. By law, the trash is fair game. I think there are only 2 cities in the US that it is against the law, IIRC reading that and TFW's is not one of them. The US Supreme Court says so!

Someone mentioned a tape that the court ordered to be returned. Wasn't that stolen and not found in the trash?

I just hope and pray that Jon can have such an influence on the kids to reverse the severe damage that kate has put on her kids. In the picture of the kids sitting listening to Mady read the book, I thought, it is Christmas! That beautiful room, the windows should have green garland with a pretty Christmas wreath with streamers. That couch in front of the window looked to be 25 years old. It looked really dumpy.

Also, about all the kale she eats. The darker the green leaves are the higher in Vitamin K it is. If you eat too much Vitamin K it will thin your blood, really thin. If you are on blood thinner meds like warfarin or Coumadin, and eating that much kale, you will be on thin ice in a heartbeat. You have to keep a regular check on your I and R and Protime.

kate is a nurse, she should know that.

It was the only ring she got, I think! They were poor in the beginning. The point of the article was that they were "suppose to be hurting for money" because Phil was kicked off the show. Well, that is not true. They are multi-multi millionaires and want for nothing! I said that and went on about kate blah blah blah.

I got a response that was funny in my email. A person said, this has nothing to do with kate you LOON!

DH and I were traveling over Xmas and we stayed in a hotel in Philly for a couple days.
We enjoyed breakfasts at Reading Terminal Market at the Dutch Eating Place and Down Home Diner (yay! scrapple!), but on Christmas, everything was closed. Instead of ordering room service for breakfast, we picked up yogurt, OJ and hard boiled eggs at WaWa (local convenience store), so there I was Xmas morning, peeling eggs in the bathroom sink!
We had free crappy coffee from the room Keurig.

I agree with everyone so far. I want to add: in show biz it's the parents who need to stay grounded, and that then over flows to the child staying grounded. Unfortunately, most parents of child stars & some of those in the reality garbage, see there kids as their winning lottery ticket to financial freedom of having to go work and not do anything else in life. And it is the poor kid or kids who end up screwed up for life. Several come to mind, Miley Cyrus, nice clean sweet kid, turns 18 and goes to hell(soon as that Disney contract was over, off came the hair, she went punk, which is ok,though her younger fans & there parents were not happy). Gets a taste of sex(having a BF), and goes wild. Sweet innocent girls don't do what she did at that award show on stage or appear nake in a video. It maybe her way of f-off Disney image, she could have picked a better way. Her singing is ok, her actions are disturbing. Then I think of all the kids in Different Strokes, 2 are dead, the third has been in & out of prison. Even an real old TV show Family Affair, the girl who played Buffy, thought she was special, they found her in the street at 18 dead of an over dose. So many kid actors never made the transfer to adult actor, they either dropped out of acting, got into drugs, went to jail/prison or died. It's sad. To their parents they were little ATM's, a way to easy street.

This enrages Jon. “She tweets everything. To the world, all about my children. I think it’s disgusting and awful. They can’t even have a normal life.”

Yet, when Kate sued Jon, they were cheering her on, not even thinking about what effect that would have on the children. When Kate says something negative about Jon, they seem to forget that he is the children's father and don't care how that may affect the children.

They'll get more eyes on the story if it's salacious, and you gave them the goods. You actually sound worse than Kate. At least she tries to be sly when she does it. The kids will see all this. I'm sorry Jon comes across as so upset and "had it" in that article. I didn't like the reporter's snide tone either. However this was in the middle of the lawsuit. You don't get to poke and poke and poke someone then cry foul when they've finally had enough. It's a complete set up. I really get the sense he's over trying to kill her with kindness. It obviously hasn't worked and you can only keep it up for so long with someone like her. Maybe he's trying to be very firm with her now, enough with Mr. nice guy. He definitely called it like he saw it in that article, totally different than how he's spoken about Kate before, with restraint. He's over it, he's done.

Does anyone else think he sounds kind of suddenly resentful of how this has all turned out? Like the lawsuit pushed hi m over the edge. I don't think he's mad at the kids or even Kate really, but rather mad at himself. I think he may be feeling disappointed and frustrated that he has never been able to get through to Kate and move on. As much as it's sad they can't co-parent for the kids, it has got to be equally tough for a parent sincerely trying to co-parent to not be able to. I'm wondering if he feels like a failure and it's all sort of catching up, years later. I feel bad for the guy but in all honesty, he has the self control of a child. I think more therapy would help.

When the topic is abuse or parental-alienation or filming children, I understand getting worked up, but the honey is joking about how good she was on DWTS, and this hater is starting to steam. What's up with that?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 103

The a-hole comment is a perfect example of Jon really learning nothing about how to handle the media. Unless maybe he just doesn't care at this point and is in F-it mode.

What he was saying is that everyone knows the suit was bogus and Kate was just being a jerk. That it wasn't really about him doing anything nefarious but rather about Kate just stretching her jerk, a-hole muscles. That's what everyone essentially said, both here and all around the media--he is not at all inaccurate with that statement.

By simple saying it a different way, for instance perhaps "everyone knows Kate's lawsuit is more about pounding her chest putting on a big show to try to stop the book than any really sincere belief I did something wrong", the same message is expressed without sounding like a jerk.

But because he said a-hole, the statement immediately, and not surprisingly, gets twisted as Jon is calling her an a-hole.

I'm glad though he explained why Hailey's texts couldn't be true, because he didn't even have that carrier then and can prove that. I'm glad he finally got to set the record straight on something. I'm guessing that that information was passed along to Kate and that's when she caved. It all makes perfect sense now. She hung her hat on those texts. When Hailey saw she was serious about using them, it suddenly became more than just Hailey shit stirring so Hailey ran scared and was hard to track down. Then Kate found out they couldn't possibly be true and had no choice but to limp out of the suits pretending nothing ever happened.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 104

I didn't like his tone. I think what he said about Kate there and Jon was over the top and unnecessary. Is this a piece of journalism or one guy being a grade A jerk? I feel like he's trying to be funny, sort of crotchety like Andy Rooney, but he's not clever or talented so it just comes across as being a tool. With that tone, no one will want to give him an interview. I don't agree with The View style of journalism where they just kiss butt but this is too far the other way.

LeeLee said... 105

You'd be nuts to say that if it weren't true since it can and probably would be refuted by ABC themselves. Plus he just had a fairly decent interview on The View, owned by ABC. They may want him back at some point, so it's not in his best interest to lie about offers he's had. I believe him too.

Did anyone notice that one of the first comments on the Philly article was made by Al Walentis. He's still trying to sell his book(he added a link to his Amazon page). He thinks he is the know-all, be-all of the Gosselin saga. He still can't stand it that Robert got the real goods on Kate. Jealous much, Al?

Thanks for understanding PJ, JMO, Joy and Tucker's mom! How fortunate we are to have gained another family member! It really is just the 3 of us (including Taffy). My parents are deceased and I have no siblings.

And then there's Kate who has her siblings, their spouses, their children, and her parents and sure doesn't seem to appreciate THEM much.

Anyway, my son is over the moon about this upcoming trip. I'm not sure if he's more excited that he has a Great Aunty or that he gets to go to Disneyland! He's emailed her pictures of Taffy and they've been busy emailing back and forth. It's very sweet. She's sent pictures of the pool at her community and says she's going to teach him how to drive a golf cart! Annnnnnnnnd now I'm going on and on.

We are very, very grateful for this lovely lady who's come into our lives.

Oh, a quick question. What would you suggest as a thank you gift when we arrive? It would have to be plane travel friendly. Any ideas would be great!

Did anyone else notice the reporter said that Robert gave him a complete copy of Kate's journal? The reporter said he read it and it would be pretty impressive for Robert to have faked the entries, they are just that credible and real.

Funny, I said the same thing months ago after reading portions of it. That it would be very difficult for a man to have the depth of understanding of what it means to be a wife, mother and woman to fake such a thing.

Jumping In said... 114

Perhaps it's my age, but I believe in choosing my words carefully when talking about others, regardless of my feelings, negative or otherwise.

I understand Jon's frustration, but using expletives when describing his wife and their relationship cheapens his case. Yes, he is entitled to the feelings he has, but he could express them with more sensitivity, if only for his children's sake.

While Kate speeds when driving, we have Jon is driving back roads after drinking. These two have 8 children who need mature parents, and while Jon still comes across as the more loving parent, they both still seem awfully immature.

My wish for this family in 2014 is that they fade into absurdity, not a single word in public from either parent.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 115

IT's almost like they're both stuck at the age they were when they started the show. 20-something, rather immature 20-somethings, diving head first into the ridiculousness of having eight kids, diving head first into a big contract with a powerful network like it's all lollipops and rainbows. As much as we talk about the dangers of reality shows damaging the children I really think that for these two particular adults, fame and this reality show really stunted them as well and I don't see that either of them has grown all that much. Just when you think Jon gets it he reverts back and does something stupid again. It's like they can't help themselves.

I interpreted it a little differently. I thought he was referring to her allegation that he has damaged her reputation and he was saying, "say what? everyone already knows she is an asshole."

Grow up, Jon. You claim to understand the media machine but you obviously don't. These interviewers are not your friends. They'll get more eyes on the story if it's salacious, and you gave them the goods. You actually sound worse than Kate. At least she tries to be sly when she does it. The kids will see all this. Can't believe Jon turned down DWTS. He could of really gotten some good support and a new fan base. Then when TFW filed the lawsuit, he would of had even more people behind him.

That reporter was horrible. Jon may need to get some AA counseling. A glass bowl filled with beer caps, let's take a shot, a very tall glass of beer, whiskey. Then driving the back roads right after. The last thing those kids need is for something bad to happen to him.

So TFW got it fixed to make Jon get a gun safe. So why can't Jon go to court and get a gag order on kate from mentioning or posting pictures the kids on twitter or on any media. Jon's right. They can't have a normal life when she is tweeting everyday several times a day about the kids and embarrassing them. He didn't talk about his children in the interview.

Tuma is not shy about his faith and Jon used to talk about his too, and now it was nothing but filth coming out of his pie hole, when he wasn't shoving a cigarette or booze in it, which of course the interviewer chose to highlight. He also said he was done with public life, and since then, he has filmed a short reality series, been on the Oprah network doing a 'where are they now' special, and given multiple interviews that were controversial (cue Kate's response and then Jon's rebuttal in the next day or so). I don't live a public life, and have never done a single one of those things! Nor would I ever want to do them! He speaks out of both sides of his mouth. Time to shut it like he said he would. This will never end. They are both living out their nasty family law case in the public. For every tit the other answer with a tat. No one is willing to call a truce. Nothing can just be let go. No one can TRULY step away from the public eye. Everyone either ends up whining to the judge or whining to a reporter. This has to be one of the worst family law cases ever. This was obviously building in Jon. What we don't get to see is everything Kate has said and done to him that's pushed him to this point since she's smart enough not to do it in front of a reporter. I feel for those kids.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 148

IMO, expressing grave concerns about your children is not "throwing them under the bus." That's Kate's spin on things. Kate is clearly in utter denial about the kids' issues and the affect the lifestyle in the public eye has had on them. This current interview aside, I don't fault him for being concerned about his kids developmentally--he was the only one willing to face the facts. The only one willing to say it. It's not something to be ashamed of, rather it's something that's got to be faced.

This part of the interview really bugged me: “I started to think about my brand,” he says, explaining the larger meaning of this new gig. “I’m still technically famous. I mean, you’re here. Heh.” He continues: “How can you get people in the door? It’s not the entertainment industry, but it’s the food industry. Cross-branding marketing right there.” (An appraisal of the cross-branding marketing: By 10 p.m. there are three married couples at the end of the bar, a lone drinker to our left, and a co-worker who went to high school with Jon to our right.)
Jon gets up, asks me what I’m drinking, fixes himself a second whiskey, then forgets to bring me anything. “The main thing the tabloids did was separate me from my brand,” he says. “My brand was Jon & Kate Plus 8. Now that I’m divorced? My new brand, because of the tabloids, is Jon Gosselin.” He’s ambivalent about this. Mainly, he’s baffled that his post-Kate dalliances garnered the notoriety they did. “In 2009, I was on 52 covers. Most-photographed person in 2009.”

It's so arrogant. His brand??? Who gives a crap about his "BRAND"......that right there, combined with his recent actions/words, says (to me anyway) that he'd go back to garbage TV in a heartbeat. I mean, what normal person talks about him/herself that way? The tabloids separated him from his brand? My husband and I are aware of the 'brand' where we work, but not as individuals. Sheesh!
Rant over. Good night.

I'm so tired of hearing Jon should know better or want better for the kid's.
The man was beat down for years...in marriage and after the show. He had No say...he was made out to be a joke...a child...with no feelings or opinions...
So now he is finally feeling a little support. The world is seeing he wasn't a complete douche...that he really gave a shit about his marriage and kids.
As much as I would like Jon to remain silent...I can see why he can't.

Enough is enough ! I do believe Jon has had enough. Jon is not on twitter or facebook posting and posting everything about the kids. Jon has not written a book full of lies with the kids pictures all in smiles. Jon isn't lying about how the kids are screaming with joy just to be there with him. Jon hasn't lied about getting a pet the kids love more than life itself...
The man was abused...and given no hope...no matter what TFW came out smelling like a rose. Now the tides have changed. People are seeing TFW for what she really is.
Like many say...the kids will/have access to the internet...
Maybe with Jon speaking up...the kids will see that their voice can be heard and YES someone will listen!
I see nothing wrong with Jon calling out TFW...He's not putting the kids on display like TFW.
So what if he went on a reality show? It didn't revolve around the kids.
He got FREE therapy ...just like he said he couldn't afford.
So what if he was/on a reality show. He has moved passed it, and so should we.

Since, Kate has not tweeted since, Dec 25, she is probably having a hissy fit, and calling her lawyer 24/24. What's the phrase: can I sue? We all know, if she does a rebuttal, she will or ROL, will get some source: Deanna, Jamie or her non-existed PR, or her-self to contact ROL, saying, what a terrible thing Jon said, and that this will ruin her chances(like she had any) to get back on TV. And how poor she is(not to mention the money she just spend on Xmas presents, bird, new car, etc). Same crap different day/year.

Agree agree agree Mel. I think lots of people gave him a huge amount of space to work out the kinks and a huge amount of support. But we're several years later now, and it's time for him to man up.

He is now at the point where he needs to deal with his problems in a mature and appropriate manner. Or, if he can't fix his problems, he needs to get therapy to learn how to accept that this is how things are going to be. For instance, I think it's pretty clear now Kate is always going to be a parental alienator. I don't see that changing anytime soon. I don't see that anything Jon has done has changed that. So at this point, he has to get therapy to find some sort of acceptance of that and figure out how to go on with life and live with his ex being like that. Turning to alcohol and cursing and "bad boy" behavior to vent his frustrations is not productive.

I do feel bad for Tuma too. He is one of many who really believed in Jon, who was willing to stand up and say no you're not going to be steam rolled by this crazy woman yet again. No, there is someone competent here who will finally fight for you who doesn't have ulterior motives here. And he wrote darn fine briefs and got Jon out of an incredible fix.

Yet this is how it works sometimes as an attorney. You can give your heart and soul to a client and fight with every last breath you have for them, and then they'll go out there and squander all your good will. Tuma I'm sure knows that, but it's still hard to see.

Sorry but he acted like a spoiled, angry, drunk, uncouth, entitled person, who can not control himself, his feelings, language, behavior and did not once consider his kids or how this would impact on them.

Whoa, we're on the same page! My comment wasn't as explicit as yours, but I thought I made that clear…?

Authenticity doesn't always mean appropriate, and I most certainly didn't read Jon that way. No, I didn't say it outright, because I didn't feel it was necessary. It's fairly obvious that there's not much good to be said about this interview, save for the fact that Jon gave us the unvarnished truth about himself & his circumstances. Unlike TFW. That was my point. Guess the lead on my pencil could've been a bit sharper. :)

Jon is his own worst enemy and it sounds like he was on a Charlie Sheen tiger blood rant. SMH.

That being said, I won't say a word about his language because I drop the F-bomb the way others say "darn". It doesn't make me a bad person, it just makes me a Jersey girl who says "fu€k". Sorry, but some of us curse and I won't be a hypocrite about it.

I read the interview and where Jon went wrong was his language. Maybe he doesn't know any better, but he should not have referred to his ex as an "a***hole". And the F-word was a real turn off.
*****************************************************************
But he DOES know better, the Round Table interview? The View?
He was under the influence, it seemed a bit manic to me too.

NJ I feel the same way you do about cursing but here's the thing, I don't care if you curse and I've done it too. But, you have to turn it off in certain situations. There are many situations where I turn the cursing off.

It wasn't so much the cursing itself, it was his lack of self control and awareness to understand he should have turned it off for this interview. It makes him sound angry and lacking self control, even if he isn't, and he should know that. For all we know many celebs curse like a sailor too, but most turn it off whenever they're in the public eye.

One more thing: I think one of the dangers of celebrity and faux celebrity is starting to believe the hype that the media puts out about you.
Worse yet is believing that it will never end.

&&&

An old Hollywood great once said the same thing. Richard Attenborough said never believe your own publicity. Wise words.

The interviewer may have been trying to be clever but only succeeded in nasty sarcasm.

&&&

I don't even like the tone he took about things he said about KATE, and I think she of all people doesn't deserve a whole lot of slack. But what he said about her was totally unnecessary and over the top. Hint: Respect wins the day when you a journalist. This bad boy nasty thing because it's funny is not funny at all actually.

I can't even imagine if he did an entire interview with this tone about Kate, her fans would blow a gasket.

True. some do, and some don't. I don't and never have, and therefore don't have to worry if I drop the bomb in public when I shouldn't. If I ever would use any of those words, my kids would think I've lost my mind and sanity and haul me off for a psychiatric evaluation!

Does Kate curse? I have no idea, but at least she shows restraint in the media. Jon does need to clean it up if he's going to be doing interviews. Language like that really doesn't make him look good, especially from someone who early on presented himself (Kate, too) as being such good Christians, praying for help in supporting the kids, leaving scripture verses plastered on mirrors, and making the rounds at churches. I wonder if there was a lot of bleeping out words on the scheduled therapy show.

Jon's interview was beyond terrible. I assume he wasn't thinking straight when he was drinking at the establishment he works at, then drives to two other bars and then drives to a friend's driveway to take a pee, making sure he showed off his gun also to the interviewer. In the same interview he called his ex an ass, but he said and did things that indicated he is a bigger asshole than TFW. That is very hard to admit. He also had to mention his beer pong contest at the local college where he was winning. I also remember something similar regarding this but it was in Florida not that local college. Maybe he was partying at several universities. Those poor kids need therapy for having to deal with both their loser parents. That interview was a disaster for his "brand" (had to laugh at whatever that meant).

Tuma is a good man, attorney, husband and father. I don't know why anyone should feel sorry for him. He defended Jon against a piece of crap lawsuit and did a great job of doing so. His reputation won't be ruined because Jon can't keep his mouth shut.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 196

I seem to remember hearing Kate does curse, but at least she has the good sense to turn it off so we don't know.

The celeb I worked for actually never cursed. Not once. Not even so much as a darn when they dropped the soap bar. To their credit. But, the staff did, like sailors. And so did the kids. And celeb was fine with it, it wasn't a battle they chose to pick. But again, when someone came over for an interview or company was around, it was expected the cursing was turned off like a light switch and everyone was perfect gentlemen and ladies. Same goes for the kids at school. I don't care if it's F this F that in our home but at school you are to behave. No one would ever know the nasty words that fly around that house.

There are a decent amount of studies about how cursing helps people feel better and releases tension. I'm sure that's not true of all people. Some people might just feel uncomfortable cursing. But like I said, if you take up cursing, much like any habit, you have to be aware of your audience. You don't smoke in a small crowded room because it's rude, just like you don't curse around certain people depending on the situation. And this was one of those situations where it was not wise.

Jon should have taken a cue from Tuma, who is a class act and stood by him in the lawsuit. Guess gratitude is not one of Jon's strong suits.

+++++++

How did Jon betray Tuma? Yes, he showed an angry side of him, one who was fed up with Kate's actions, and his behavior during that interview was much less than stellar, but he didn't say anything about not appreciating Tuma's work for him, or being ungrateful for what he did.

Well, because he believed so strongly in Jon and believed that he does not deserve this mess, and now Jon is back to behaving like a child again and I think there's a tendency to feel like well maybe he has made his own bed here after all. Trust me, it's disappointing when you have one perception of a client and then they turn around and are someone else. It does sometimes feel like a betrayal. It's something you have to sort of deal with, it does happen. I think though Tuma has enough experience to know that this happens all the time and not to take it personally.
