Five important lessons from 'The Armstrong Lie'

"The truth in all this is hard. Such a huge number of people wanted to believe so bad, that they hated anyone who didn't believe, and hated anyone who questioned it."

The Armstrong Lie is a documentary chronicling Lance Armstrong's comeback tour. The documentary had completed most of its filming when Lance's lies were exposed and he was subsequently banned from the sporting world. The filmmaker then went back to the cutting room floor and re-edited the film to incorporate the story of a dramatic fall from grace.

Here are five lessons to be learned from his powerful work:

1. Lying catches up eventually.

This is an obvious one. Lance was described by many as a gifted storyteller, able to craft a careful and compelling lie to sell products, and himself. If anyone was equipped to deceive, it was him. Lies piled up upon lies so effortlessly for the star that some friends said they didn't think he even knew he was lying. But a house built on sand will eventually fall, and so too did Lance's deceitful empire.

2. Suing can't always make your problems go away.

Sometimes the nice guy
finishes first in the end.
Lance used his incredible wealth and power to try to make his critics shut up, often suing or threatening lawsuits, and for many people it worked and they crawled into a black hole and disappeared. But Lance's former teammate, Frankie Andreu, and Frankie's wife Betsy, were determined to get the truth out there. They had nothing to lose. Frankie had already confessed his own wrongdoing, admitting he used performance enhancing drugs during several races, and he was too old to get back into the sport anyway. The Andreus also felt very burned by Lance. They felt that Lance's continued insistence on sticking to his lies when Frankie and many others had long ago owned up to what they did wrong, was perpetuating a dark cloud over the cycling world. Lance also used to be their close friend, and they felt betrayed that he would contradict their story and smear their names when they knew they were telling the truth (Betsy once accidentally found a cooler filled with banned substances in Lance's bus). Betsy especially was a woman of principles who deeply resented cheaters and liars. Lance didn't understand someone caring more about their principles than their money, because Lance is, quite obviously, without principles.

When Armstrong realized the Andreus weren't going to back down, he upped the ante by having some of his people threaten them. Even that didn't work. Lance also orchestrated campaigns to shut others up, like his former friend Jonathan Vaughters. Lance eventually apologized to Betsy, and whether it was sincere (many viewers will think it's not) it was an apology she accepted graciously. Betsy, with all her courage and determination, as well as her penchant for forgiveness, emerges from the documentary a key reason the house of cards fell, and the voice of morality. She is a modern day hero and whistleblower.

3. Your haters may have a point.

Armstrong chose to frame his critics as haters and liars, and tried to get rid of them through intimidation and lawsuits. Much of the media was reluctant, and scared, to believe the critics. However in the end the critics were right. If a bunch of people are jumping up and down trying to explain that something is just not the way it seems, they just may be on to something.

4. Quitting while you're ahead is often a good thing.

Quite simply, Lance got greedy. Three or four first place finishes weren't enough, he wanted more. Most Lance historians agree that had he simple stopped at the top of his game, none of this ever would have come out.

5. Journalists should never be fans too

This reminded us so much of Kate Coyne and her odd defense of all things Kate Gosselin. The filmmaker admitted he was a fan of Lance, and set about to make a documentary about his hero. The fi
Kate Coyne
lm was almost complete before the filmmaker finally got a clue that the house of cards was falling. Perhaps being so enamored with the guy prevented him from seeing the truth. As a result, he had to tell the story in hindsight. Had he been willing to open his eyes to his hero, he could have become the greatest whistleblower of them all and a hero himself. He was too busy being a fan to realize he had a Pulitzer story within his grasp. A journalist should never become so captivated by their famous subjects or the story they are telling that they miss the truth.

The Armstrong Lie is available on Netflix, Redbox, and many other outlets.

Tucker's Mom, oh ,yes, the smoked bones they just love! But I have to double bag them and keep them from human food, because after driving 15 miles home, they sure smell up the place. We used to be able to buy them for cheap, but since I have been recommending to dog owners, the store jacked up the price sky high. Joys of small town living. And yes, it is so sad about chemical use on pet chews, even the dogs can't escape dangers.

Nor was there a foe in sight. I guess nobody wants anything to do with her. Kind of sad, actually.

@Kateplusmy8: @christinerawli4 nope not me. Not this year, sadly. Wanted to stay home w my kiddies instead! But next year, I shall derby again!! ;)
*******
That's a load of malarkey. TFW never wants to say home with her "kiddies" (who by the way, aren't "kiddies" anymore TFW, as much as you wish you could roll back time and make them cute 3-year olds again).

I like the idea that Gina might have actually put her foot down and told Steve "if you take that worthless POS to the Derby this year, I'm going to turn you into a gelding!"

My actual guess - who ever TFW grifted Derby invites from in past years is no longer taking her calls. Ohhhh, so sad!

I swear I remember her saying once she had friends who invited her. I wonder if it's some connection to Steve. There's a lot of horse people in Maryland. Yet in the last appearance, she wasn't sitting with friends that I recall. She was just by herself.

Since I know she doesn't have any friends, we know that she had to get the invites some other way, and I wouldn't be surprised if Steve Nield didn't have some hand in that.

I understand your points and I agree that of all the wrongs committed by Sterling - the one that the media pounced upon is probably the least egregious and taken alone, most definitely not grounds for the consequences he is facing. As I said elsewhere - it appears to be a convergence of events, with the (unfortunate for him) timing of the release of that recording at a time when the media was possibly casting around for the next "big" story. Unfair - yes. Undeserved - no, not for this particular guy.

I think if Sterling had been a stand up guy, with a history of being open, fair and unbiased in his past business dealings, this story wouldn't have had the same punch. It's a lesson in morality. Sometimes, our actions do indeed catch up with us.

Starz22 said...

My 2 cents on Sterling....

I find it wrong that this man was fined over 2 million dollars for things he said in the PRIVACY of his OWN home. He didn't rant on twitter or make a youtube video..he didn't blab this shit on a blog... He thought he was having a conversation with his ho in private. I believe he was baited...and yes...he took the bait.
Now before I get creamed....I don't agree with him. He IS raciest. I find his "beliefs" to be messed up and so very wrong. BUT. I'm so tired of this. It seems to me if you don't agree with whatever is trending atm ...you are wrong and should lose everything.
Example ...when Kirk Cameron spoke about his beliefs about gay marriage ect...that man was chastised by celebs...made out to be the devil cause of what he said. AGAIN...I don't agree with him either. I DO believe in freedom of speech. It's so easy for me to turn him and Sterling off. Not give them another second of my attention. Like the duck guy? Never watched don't give a shit.
I disagree with what these 3 people have said but I'm not going to waste time on them...time I've never given to them in the first place.

Do I think Sterling needs to be relived of his team? You Bet!
Do I think we need to call his ho out on why she did this? YES...

We have gotten too PC . You should be able to say what you think in your own home but to be fined for it is just wrong.

I guess TFW kept her word and took the twins out to dinner after the game. Seems like she and just the 2 girls do this a lot.
2 questions. 1. Why don't the others go to games too? - that was always a family activity for everyone who didn't have other plans. 2. Maybe Jon has all of the sextuplets!!? Yay!! Two locals tweeted about seeing them but it looks like one of them (the ?hostess who said she 'sat' them) deleted hers. (at least I can't find it now. lol)

&&&&&&

That's true. And had he said those things at a game, or as Starz said on twitter or what have you, that would be a big problem.

But he said them in his private home with the understanding it would be private, and you should always have free speech there, free of consequence. Punish the guy for all the terrible things he's done in public, but to open up someone's closet and go poking around is just plain self righteous finger wagging. As if we all haven't said things we would like to keep private in our home. If we want what he said exposed and him tarred and feathered for it, then we should be willing to put out there any and every single thing we've ever said in our kitchens. Install cameras over your stoves and make a live youtube channel of everything that happens there, and allow the public to comment. If that's the kind of society the American people want, I want no part of it.

Why would a child say "yeeeah freedom"!!! when Mom is gone? I don't understand Milo's thinking.

I would hope that the nanny is on the same page as their mother, and that nothing changes when Mom is away. Same rules, same expectations. Otherwise, talk about confused and resentful kids.

She tweeted "a lacrosse game in the rain." We had a sudden downpour. Sky opened up and really let loose, briefly. It wasn't like it rained for hours on end. She (or one of the twins) took a picture of the field after the game, showing the rainbow over the field. Then she took the girls to dinner. Perhaps the younger ones were with Jon. Nothing strange about any of that -- not that I can see. Or, am I missing something here (as usual)?

Some on twitter are saying that she treated her server like hell and the manager should have banned her. Why? What's in those two tweets that would indicate this? The one person said that she "sat" Kate. This is what the host does, not the server. The second tweet doesn't say anything about having been her server at Dawson's.

Are there any other tweets from any of the people who allegedly saw her that said they were her server, and exactly what Kate did that was rude?

Localyocul said...

Too bad if Shawn Johnson didn't see those tweets. Of course TFW is nice to her she's probably grifting gymnastics lessons. The in crowd kids were wonderful I each other in high school too; to the rest of us not so much

Oh! No, I guess it's not strange- I didn't know i f the rainbow over the empty field was real or photoshopped- it is beautiful now that you confirmed it actually happened! I thought custody was all kids at a time, or "whoever appears" at Jon's car at the gate.I figured TFW was just tweeting to rub in the fact that the teens prefer to be with her. But you're right, you can't read things into everything. Thanks for clarifying.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

If anything, a good nanny who is called to care for children when parents are out of town should be sitting down with the parents and making sure the nanny has a firm grasp of how the household runs. They should make sure they know the routines, the rules, the expectations, and should strive to mimic all of those as much as possible. The only thing that should change is that you're working in a daily phone call to Mom somewhere.

It's a disaster when kids think when Mom's away the mice play. Plus it's just not good for them, it can start to build up an idea that it's good, or bad depending on the nanny, when Mom is out of town. It should be a neutral feeling. They don't need that kind of distraction of things being completely different at home, with everything else on a child's plate.

I'll say it again, I don't think Milo has kids. The things she says are so clueless.

PA Dutch Mom - I didn't see anything strange with her tweet either and it was a nice shot of the rainbow. However, her #lifesarainbow tag didn't seem to carry over to dinner since two of the workers didnt seem to think she was all rainbows and lollipops.

It's actually hard to tell from the restaurant tweet whether they mean they just think she's a bitch because they know her reputation from TV or whether she actually did something bitchy at the restaurant.

Sort of like if you saw Trump in public someone might say oh he's such a douche! That doesn't mean he actually did anything douchey at that moment, just that that's their general opinion of him.

Although it's pure speculation on my part, I wouldn't doubt in the least that the mere sight of restaurant wait staff dredges up in Kate's hate for Jon and Kate's never been able to mask how she feels at any given moment.

Well and the problem is if the Tups are with Jon, as they should be since she had them last weekend, the twins may process this special treatment as a reward. They are consistently rewarded for choosing to stay with her, based on her own tweets about what she does for them. Mommy time at the game, a special dinner out just the big girls at a big girl restaurant. What 13 year old would choose to stay with 6 other "babies" as opposed to that? I bet the twins quite like pretending that it's just the two of them.

I love Sandie's snark too! She is a hoot!

I have a friend who was known to be rude to waitstaff. She's a great person otherwise, but for some reason she always treated servers with disdain. It was embarrassing and we would tell her about it. She would wave it off, saying that if you were too nice to them, they slacked.

A bunch of us went to lunch one day. As usual, she treated the young waitress like a second class citizen. We all got seperate checks. At the end of the meal, the waitress laid the checks on the table and said she'd be right back. We looked them over to see which check belonged to whom, and saw that she had typed in 'yellow sweater' 'purple scarf' etc. to identify us. One check- my mean friend's check, had "bitch lady" typed in. We were stunned for about half a second, then we howled until we were crying. Well, all of us but my mean friend. She was fuming. She marched the check over to the manager and made a scene. Boo hoo. This poor girl who was only 17, was made to come over to our table and apologize. The manager further said that she was going to be made to pay for all of our tabs. We tried to argue with him saying that was excessive, but he wouldn't budge. It turned out that one of my friends had a connection to her parents, so we funneled the money back to her. The silver lining though is that my friend got it. She is exceedingly nice to servers now!

Imagine how nice an amicable divorce would have been for the twins.
They could've gone to Dad's restaurant after the game, and had a nice meal, and maybe Jon and TFW could've had a quick conversation to catch each other up on how the children's week went. That sort of civil split was within her grasp, but TFW poured gasoline over situation and set it on fire. The word "selfless" does not exist in her parenting
manual.
