One look at her in a commercial and in an interview with the farts and burps remarks and I knew there was something very "off" there and I don't care if she put every cent in the bank for her kids. I could have passed it off as a cultural thing, but it was more than that. Something was wrong. Trashy is what came to mind and there was no getting around that no matter if she presented herself as a good parent.

I'm happy to report I was not among that group. I only needed to watch her for less than 30 seconds on some long-forgotten coupon show that TLC was peddling to recognize the 'ugh' factor about her. All she needed was a curly tail growing out of her backside to be an exact clone of a big mama sow. She was no diamond in the rough she was a pig at the trough.
I wish I could say I figured out Kate that quickly but I can't. I didn't catch onto her ugh-ly until a few episodes in.
It appears that with all TLC's great ratings from the creeps and freak shows they've aired, success went straight to their heads and they got sloppy about the kind of animals they were branding. They should be more careful.

We have so little facts about what TLC's role in this, it's so hard to say who might have a claim for a possible suit or not.
I do think however TLC is playing with fire. One of these days, karma is going to come around to them to. Someone is going to unearth some kind of claim and sue the pants off them too. I'm actually a bit surprised there isn't more outrage toward TLC. I think if they were a football coach or a teacher looking the other way, they would be, but it's hard for people conceptualize that a network is not this entity but rather a bunch of human beings who should be held to the same standard as any other human being. TLC has successfully hidden behind this incorrect idea that they are just a network not a person.

I remember that. It was the Santario girl AND her 2 yr. old daughter that were there helping Jon. She found out that she was there with her daughter and she went bat piled high crazy. A 35 lb bucket of non-toxic Safe Paw ice melt runs at about $75 at Home Depot. If she bought 250 lbs of the stuff that would be over $500. If she bought the 40 lb box of regular ice melter at about $20 a box it would cost her about $125.
I'll lay odds she bought the latter.

I have to wonder if Jon is indeed the biological father of his 8 children. Kate has green eyes and Jon's are blue or green. That means recessive genes only are passed on to their offspring. ALL their children should have either blue or green eyes, not brown, like they all have. I think he may have been sterile, and when Kate went to the fertility clinic, the sperm of another Koren/Asian or Koren/Asian mixed man (like Jon) was used instead. One parent has to HAVE brown eyes for any of the kids to have brown eyes, and they all do. Surely the twins have learned this in science class and must be wondering themselves how they ended up with such a dark eye color.

What does it matter? Lots of people aren't the biological parent to their children. I think it's been speculated before they may have used an Asian sperm donor, not that it matters.

I don't think Gladys will ask. She will be too afraid of the answer and that means that she would have to come up with damage control, explaining that Kate is piecing and patching and it would be far too expensive for her to buy the pet safe brand! That, of course, would bring about criticism about not caring for Shoka's well-being, and Gladys couldn't have that.
Last year all of the stores were out of the paw safe ice melt, and because my strays used the back deck and sidewalks there, I didn't want to take the chance with the regular ice melt. I used cat litter mixed with sand so that they wouldn't be slipping all over the place. It worked. This year I don't have to worry about that since they are now strictly indoor cats!
I had to laugh at someone on Twitter defending the use of the snow thrower, saying that she has to clear the sidewalks. What sidewalks? There aren't any in front of the property, only the small walk from the driveway into the house and that can be done with a few shovels. Mr. Snow Plow man will take care of the driveway leading to the garage. Why in the heck does she need a snow thrower? She'd not going to do that driveway and spend hours doing it when a few runs with the snow plow will do it in no time. At the first snow, I'm sure we will hear all about how she opened the entire driveway with her new equipment, and how she dragged a 5,000 pounds of ice melt up and down the driveway, spreading every inch of it all by herself.

Generally it doesn't because the law honors who is acting as the father, not who actually is the bio father. I don't know what PA law says but there are a few little loopholes in CA law. I do know of a divorce where the mom IS jumping up and down about the kids being from a sperm donor, and she found a loophole. Has something to do with the acting father denying there was a sperm donor or something. I don't know the particulars but I remember saying to her oh I thought that didn't matter. And she pointed me to some code section where it does. There's actually a big broo-ha-ha right now about how the law hasn't really completely locked down the issue of sperm and egg donors. One of my old professors is a preeminent scholar on the issue. It's interesting stuff, since most of our laws were written before reproductive technology got so advanced.
CA just passed a law that says you can have two legal fathers. While the intent was to recognize gay couples, it doesn't say that in the law. So I've seen it used in court to try to get both a bio father and a step father full rights. All you have to show is that it's in the child's best interest. I can see a savvy lawyer for a woman who wants to erode an acting father's rights using that to recognize a sperm donor.

My only experience was having to do with children who are the result of an affair and that the man married to the cheating wife was considered the father by law. That's probably changed too. I guess when couples fight over custody of frozen embryos, nothing should surprise any more.

Yes I think that's the thing. I don't do reproductive law so I had only ever read the laws in passing. They seemed airtight to me at first blush. Then I found out about all the loopholes.
I thought I had read they were recommending if you use a donor you should prepare documents to have them sign away all rights and claims to the child in full. If it were airtight that wouldn't even be necessary.
However I still think it's very safe to say that in general, whoever is acting as the parent is recognized as the true parent. I've definitely seen that time and time again. Also in CA if you are married, all the children in the marriage are presumed yours.
Some actor just won a big paternity action where the mom was trying to cut him off. I was glad of that.

Oh my goodness! There is no way on God's green earth that TCFW would have kept her mouth shut if any of his children had come from donors instead of Jon. WOS would have told all in the blink of an eye in an effort to have Jon stricken as their father in order for her to have sole custody and total control of the children. Probably as you say, to get attention, and also a reminder to everyone that they have a gator. And also to make it sound as though they have fun shrieking times together like teenage girl pals, which really just makes her sound silly.
And as it's sure to start - yes, children who are not close to driving age can drive gators and atvs on private property, states vary about if they have to have a licensed driver with them. Kids here in farm country drive them all the time; however, I do not see them or the adults shrieking as they drive; they are expected to be calm and mature for safety reasons.
Does kate think that she is that untouchable to a lawsuit if one of her kids who are clearly under aged to drive that Gator and possibly drive in the road to get to a neighbors driveway, if they cause an accident and injure or kill someone?
She would be held liable and Jon too possibly. But if Jon didn't give permission, how could he be held liable? All of her socked away money, her McMansion, the kids money in the college accounts, her Jimmy Choo shoes, her little red leather jacket, her boxes and bottles of wine, her hair attachments, her freezer burnt cookies and her paid for boyfriend would go bye-bye.

Re Jon and paternity -- Too many of the children look like him for me to give this any credence whatsoever. And I'm living proof that 2 light eyed parents can have a dark eyed child. My dad had gray-blue eyes and my mom had blue eyes. My eyes are brown. Each of my parents had a parent or grandparent with brown eyes. In my case, I'm a throwback to my great grandmother, who was half Shawnee. I looked just like her, only with fairer skin, when I was younger -- the only one of the offspring/grands/greats who did.
I didn't watch Jon's TMZ interview, but from what's been posted here, I don't think there was anything wrong with it. It's amazing to me just how different Jon and TFMJG are. The words I hear most often about Jon -- from people here who know him and from friends I have from the area -- are friendly, nice, courteous. We all know what is said, and how the locals feel, about TFMJG. TFMJG is what I call a plotter. She plans and schemes and schedules things right down to the micro-second. Nothing she does is spontaneous. Everything has to be laid out in great detail and she's unable to cope with anything that upsets her agenda. Jon is what I call an act-er. He goes with the flow and responds to things as they occur. He doesn't always think to consider the consequences of his actions, or to filter his thought processes before he speaks. His heart is usually in the right place, though. I don't think he is "dim", stupid, not bright, or unintelligent. I think he's plenty smart, but he's unfocused and lacking in self-discipline and immature at times. Given a choice between the two types, though, I'll go with someone like Jon any day. TFMJG would drive me wild in about 10 seconds.

readerlady, I was in Kate's town in August and my friend took me to see her place. Apparently many of the locals know where it is. The road is a slow, curvy, country road. Not much speed to be gained because of the blind curves, but no shoulder either. I'm hoping they access the neighbor's land by going through their own. When we drove by, we saw one of the boys pushing a cart of yard waste up a hill. This was after they got the gator. And bonus, we saw Shoka too! It's a beautiful estate and Shoka is a beautiful dog. Actually, that whole area is extremely beautiful. I was quite pleasantly surprised.

No ATV shall be operated without a lighted headlight and taillight from ½ hour after sunset to ½ hour before sunrise.
All ATVs must be titled and registered, with the owner receiving one numbered plate.

That's the way I interpreted it. I wonder if she has a plate for that thing and if Mady has a safety training certificate. I would think that the driver needs a certificate, but it's not really clear. If it's registered in Kate's name, is she the only one who needs the certificate? Regardless, if they drove it on another person's property without a certificate, according to the law, it was illegal.
Teaching my daughter to drive was a white knuckle experience. But no shrieking was involved, not once! That would be so counterproductive. We started in a parking lot, then progressed to a corporate park then the roads. At the same time she started her on-the-road training through the local IU. A neutral party is a much more effective instructor, and you get a saving on insurance.

Ugh I should hope not. Shrieking is so not my style. Man, woman or child. I find it incredibly annoying and painful. The first little girl I ever nannied, adorable 6 year old, was a shrieker and screamer. I shut that down within 24 hours.
Kids are happy not to do that if someone actually asks them to stop.
I interpret that to mean the driver of the vehicle, even a minor, must possess that certificate if she wishes to leave her parent's property.
I assume they probably have safety classes offered for these. They may even be online classes or at the DMV.
The way the law sounds written to me, they want to respect that people with large properties whose children are doing chores need freedom to be able to get around on these things without a lot of red tape. But when you go to another property, that's a different story.
I really have a hard time picturing Kate waltzing these kids into the DMV to sit for some safety class and obtain a certificate. I bet she hasn't even read the law. But just so she has us know, someone in legal possession of a firearm who legally uses that firearm to deter a legitimate trespasser and protect himself and his family, that's horrifying to her. Got it, Kate.
My experiences with underage driving and farm machinery were all on my grandparents' farm. I don't know all the laws and I'm sure they've changed in the last umpteen years. Kate could have driven to cross the road and then switched with Mady. But they still should never have done it. It's a liability issue. If Mady gets hurt on Gosselin property, Kate won't sue Kate. Did the neighbors want that kind of liability? What if Mady tipped over the Gator and they were both hurt? It's incredibly presumptious to think the neighbor is ok with it. Not that Kate is aware of other people.
When learning to drive anything, there should be no shrieking by driver or passenger. Someone needs to be the adult in that family. Currently there is no one.

The sad thing is I don't think this reasonable thought ever even crosses Kate's mind. She doesn't think. It doesn't cross her mind many neighbors would be fit to be tied to have a child operating machinery on their property. Not because they don't like the child or the family or trust them, but because IF heaven forbid they get hurt suddenly it's on their hands. There are serious liability issues for anyone who is hurt on your property. She very much has the mind of a child, a child who does not think about all the things adults have to worry about. A child who does not have to think responsibly. I think in some ways being such a flighty adult can be a good thing. I've met parents like this, and they tend to be well liked by children. Right. I remember watching some episodes when they were on trips and she just trotted ahead of them, never looking back to make sure they were being supervised and all were accounted for. She was just off in her own little world. I can't believe that none of them has been lost.

I am dying to see that! I saw her work earlier this year in a brief gallery showing. I love her work. It's so human. She was just the hired help who got herself a camera. She took photos for the love of the craft. Not to be famous. It never crossed her mind to try to get her photos out there and be famous. She became famous when her photos were discovered after she died.
It's not about having moral objections to things. It's about cherry picking what you think is dangerous to suit your needs. I.e. conveniently finding that dangerous things their father does are oh so terrible, whereas the dangerous things YOU do are fine. It doesn't work that way.
It never occurs to here that many people find that children operating motorized vehicles are much more dangerous than the millions of responsible adults who legally possess a firearm for their personal protection. She doesn't get to complain about their father when she's out here taking very dangerous risks herself and possibly even breaking the law.

Teaching my daughter to drive was a white knuckle experience. But no shrieking was involved, not once! That would be so counterproductive. We started in a parking lot, then progressed to a corporate park then the roads. At the same time she started her on-the-road training through the local IU. My son is going for his driving test this week. I've been the main co-pilot as he obtained his 50+ hours at the wheel. No shrieks out of either of us, although I did gasp at times, grab onto the grip above the passenger window, and mutter "watch out!" from time to time, much to my son's annoyance. For some reason, Kate thinks that if she posts that her kids shrieked with joy, or if she is shrieking about something - it means they were having an extremely good time. I just wanted to share about a tv show I first watched tonight, called Dogs of War. Maybe this has been on for awhile. It features a military vet who suffers from PTSD, and how he adopted a dog and trained her to be his service dog, which made a huge difference for the good in his life. Now he and his wife run an organization that puts dogs together with other vets. I cried throughout the show, because it is so moving, all the while watching out for phoniness or TLC-style "reality." I truly hope this show isn't staged, because there are so many vets out there who need all the support they can get to help them deal with the aftermath of war. If the show sounds interesting, it's on Sunday nights on A&E (I think).
Glenn Close was on Oprah a couple of years ago about getting dogs from kill shelters and getting them to a program in prisons so the prisoners can train them to be service dogs. Very moving.
It is very hard for the prisoners to get into the program. They have to have an excellent record and references.

It's just not the direction this country is moving in. Yes. I believe the bill is to allow transgendered men and women to use the restroom of their respective gender. I think what the petition objects to the most is when Michelle Duggar said that this would allow child molesters to use the women's room.

Also, you ought to see the house that Jill and Derik are living in. It is huge. There is a picture on Duggars, LINAHAP, of a younger Jim Bob and Jana who was pushing Josiah in a baby stroller at a amusement park or someplace. I watched this documentary special on the family who started the 'Purity Ball" tradition, where the girls pledge their purity to their fathers.
The oldest girl hadn't found "Mr. Right" yet, and was just floundering in life.

Yes, Tucker's Mom, it is a travesty! Of epic portions! Jana can't get her teenage years and early 20's back when she is 50, taking care of Ma and Pa Duggar who are old and sick!

Thanks kate is a twit. Glad to know I'm not crazy. The article explains that everyone had thought she didn't want to share her work. But that a letter they recently unearthed suggests maybe she had made attempts to. The director thinks a lot of factors played a role in why she didn't pursue it further. He also suggests it was rather odd to write all the way to France about selling, and suggests the letter may only be a draft. That's the beauty of documentaries is they are able to unearth little treasures and add something important to the story. And perhaps even deepen the mystery further.

A restraining order for doing what? Such an order is put in place to keep someone away. From whom should Kate be kept away, and why? Neighbors who give her permission to come to their farm for feed? I'm not following this here. A restraining order has nothing to do with letting a 14-year-old drive a vehicle that has a warning put on it. It's a warning, not a law. If, in fact, the PA guidelines/requirements for allowing a youngster to operate this thing were violated, and no safety certificate or registration plate was obtained, then yes, Kate is responsible. But a restraining order? Nope.

Yes, Blowing in the Wind, you are right. No restraining order. If she has permission from the farmer, then let her knock herself out. But it is wrong for Mady or Cara drive it, they are not PA licensed and possibly don't have a certificate. It clearly states on the warning sticker:
Riders can fall off and be killed
Maximum of one rider per seat
No riders in back or anywhere else
Then there is a picture of Mady driving at a pretty good clip, Cara in passenger seat and 4 tups riding in the back.

I think it takes a certain personality type to want to be on a reality tv show. I think that a person who wants that is usually craving not only the money, but the attention and the "sort of a celebrity" status.
And then once a person gets accustomed to having both the money and the fame, it must be quite addictive and hard to go back to earning $10/hour at a "mediocre" job.
I think of it as the modern day version of selling your soul to the devil, but the devil is a well-dressed corporate rep.
