Allowing couples to get their license in a different county is acceptable because Kim Davis has a right to refuse because of her religious freedom?
So, she feels it is just okay to make couples just go "over there" to get the marriage certificate.
Boy oh boy, I am old enough to remember that this statement is just like the following:

You can go to school right over there, across town from the all white one
You can get married in another state because we don't approve of marriage between races here.

My gosh! I didn't even remember how this started. I guess when I saw a video clip on CNN, the jumper and the hair reminded me of Michelle Duggar and the whole religious angle tied to the Duggar hypocrisy theme. I was going to comment about Mr. Kim's apparel. He appears to be wearing the same shirt in every picture I've seen of him, though he does seem to have two pair of pants - regular jeans and overalls.

I also want to comment on those who think Mr. Jill looks dirty. I think he just looks that way because has very coarse dark hair, and he doesn't shave too often. He can't help the hair and beard type, but he could shave, especially when he knows he's likely to be photographed, like at a wedding. A haircut and comb would also improve his appearance.

"It might be Kim Davis' favorite hype-up song, but Survivor says it did not grant the embattled Kentucky county clerk the rights to use "Eye of the Tiger" at her get-out-of-jail rally.
Survivor founding member and "Eye of the Tiger" co-writer Jim Peterik sent a statement to Billboard making clear that the band did not authorize the song's use at Tuesday's rally.
"I was very surprised and dismayed at the misuse of the song I co-wrote with Frankie Sullivan for Rocky lll," he said. "The song has motivated thousands through the years to reach beyond their limits. Its use for the release of Kim Davis does not support my views or my politics. I have contacted my publishers to make sure this usage is stopped immediately."

The average American is not going to relate to this or sympathize with this. In fact they are the butt of the joke for most people. If they were smart, they would wait for a more mainstream, put together couple. One who could fit in just as well in NY/Chicago/LA as anywhere else. Less jumpers and mountain dew and Oreos, less "I have four wives and I see nothing wrong with that plus I run a pig farm" looking couple. More Rosa Parks. MLK was smart. He bided his time, he waited for just the right person to put out there as the face of civil rights. He found her in Parks due to patience, diligence and very good vetting. That is a leader of a movement that succeeds.

Add my thanks to P.J. for posting about Kim Davis. I'm sure I wouldn't have followed the story that closely without the alerts here about how interesting it is. It's been so fun discussing it. I don't think the story is over yet. We still have tomorrow morning where presumably she will go into work and refuse to issue licenses. And there are more tweets to be had from SixNexttoKimDavis!
I think these folks are all on the same spectrum. I think she is one and the same with the Duggars and Kate. People who want to put their lives out there as a certain way of living and in many cases "sell" it but don't want a mirror put back on them.
Although God strike me down, Kate is not nearly as bad as the Duggars or the Kim Davises of the world are. She seems to more or less be mostly concerned with her own life and $$$$ not anyone else's. Of course that's more due to her ignorance and being so self-absorbed and having no interest in the world, but no matter. I still don't know if she even knows Trump is running. What truly angered me yesterday was listening to Huckabee and the Huckster lawyer yammer on about poor Kimmie, suffering in jail. Poor, poor, persecuted Kimmie.
Meanwhile, in America, we have a shameful history of LGBT people being shamed, shunned, discriminated against, assaulted, injured, tortured and even killed because they are LGBT.

Sure and he has every right to sue if she fires him. Your boss cannot make you do something illegal. I'd say the legislature would have no choice but to impeach because a firing by her goes beyond her own beliefs. We were right about how she runs that office. I would not be surprised if another deputy clerk stands up to her. I would say with her out of the picture rotting in her private cell, those deputies talked plenty (when the son was not around).

But it may not go that far. I would think that if she orders him not to issue a license there will be plenty of witnesses and the judge will order her back to jail in pretty short order. She may get out the word "you're fired" before she goes, but he will be reinstated in pretty short order.
Looks like the Kentucky legislature is ready to waste a lot of their time and court time as well:
"Several lawmakers have already filed legislation for the 2016 session that would exempt county clerks from having to issue marriage licenses."
They can make any law they want, and the Federal courts can declare it unconstitutional. They must know that's what would happen.
In Canada, our Prime Minister has lost several cases in the Supreme Court. He could try to stack it with justices favorable to his causes, but he's already done that and they still keep ruling against him.

The Kentucky governor refuses to call the legislators back to work before their scheduled return in January in order to impeach her, some of those legislators are writing bills which would give the county clerks the lawful option of refusing to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, she continues to draw her $80,000/year salary despite her defiance and spending most of last week in jail, and she's attracted the attention of some politicians. She's probably taking the rest of the week to give interviews and negotiate a book deal. Tonight she will attend Wednesday evening church services where she will be lauded and feted again. Fold? Ha! Just like other people discussed on this board, she and Mr. Davis have had a taste of the limelight and they're not going to give it up that easily.
On the other hand, one of the news reports I read stated there is at least one more same sex couple who sued her that has not applied for a marriage license. I'm sure they and other couples will apply at the county clerk's office once she returns to work. So I predict Mrs. Davis will be back in jail by next Friday.
So the Duggar missionaries came home, again, in time for cousin Amy's wedding AND an opportunity for yet another People photoshoot. What pray tdell is so interesting about a 5 month old baby? Hodges, but possibly more importantly, whether a candidate for the presidency of the United States has the qualifications to hold the highest elected office in the land without even a basic comprehension of our country’s foundational document.
I wish you had gone even further by asking Huckabee if he, in fact, is exploiting the highly visible notoriety surrounding the case of Kim Davis — the Rowan County, Kentucky Clerk who recently refused to issue marriage licenses, as per her duties, to same-sex couples on “religious” grounds – in his attempts to kick-start his foundering presidential campaign by attaching himself so closely and clearly to Davis? Maybe we should take Huckabee up on his offer to serve in jail for eight years instead of Davis.

Mr. Kim's appearance is that of someone who has little to no social skills or awareness.

I think Loving v. Virginia is one of the greatest Supreme Court cases ever written and was rightly cited in the gay marriage case.
The story is a really moving one. The couple couldn't make it to the oral arguments, I'm guessing because they really struggled financially, but this is what the husband told his lawyer: ""Mr. Cohen, tell the Court I love my wife, and it is just unfair that I can't live with her in Virginia."
Can't the same be said of the Kentucky gay couples? We love each other, and it's just unfair that we can't get our marriage license in Rowan county.
It had a tragic end. Mr. Loving died just a few years after the Supreme Court decision in a car accident that severely wounded his wife--she lost an eye. She lived until 2008 however.

And that's what she needs to do. She can believe it's wrong all she wants and remain the bigot that she is if that's what makes her happy, but she took the additional step of throwing stones, big ones, and hard. That's not permissable under the Bible she believes.
There are probably quite a few people out there who still think it's wrong, but as long as they're not interfering with someone's rights or making others feel bad, they're not hurting anything. If she had such a huge problem with it, it was incumbent on HER to figure out how she was going to deal with it. Resign, not issue licenses personally but allow her office mates to. She did not go for any of those acceptable options.
Weren't these the same people who were complaining that the Muslims were trying to bring sharia law into the country? They were outraged that anyone thought their beliefs could trump the law. How is that any different than what these people are doing? I guess it's because their religion is the right one.

And that's the thing, we as a society have go to draw a line somewhere.
You can't just say it's okay to discriminate against whoever you want to because it doesn't comport with your religion or beliefs.

I spoke at length about the dognapping and the current storm in which Kim currently finds herself swirling. Ross says he’s still asked about Charlie as he travels around the region. You can imagine that few have anything kind to offer about Kim Davis. Especially at this point in time.
He also shared a story about recently having business to conduct in the Clerk’s office. During the time he was there, Kim didn’t make eye contact or acknowledge him. But when it was time for him to leave? She yelled, “BYE ROSS!”, waving, smirk plastered across her thrice-divorced face. Which, well, seems to line up with everything the public has seen of her behavior.
One can’t help but feel for Ross. His frustration permeates everything he says and it’s clear to even casual observers that he’s been left to fend for himself.
Kim isn’t responsible for her adult daughter’s actions, no. But she knew about them. She could have influenced her daughter or coaxed her into returning the dog. She could have been a compassionate Christian when dealing with Ross. She wasn’t helpful, she wasn’t compassionate. It would be really interesting to find out what Kentucky campaign laws are, because it would be pretty unusual to allow someone to start asking for votes to people who walk into the office just wanting a fishing license. That seems highly inappropriate and an abuse of the office. Generally campaign rules require you to campaign on your own time outside the office. It sounds like Kim has been rubbing people the wrong way for years.
I don't get the sense people are thinking that Kim is representative of Kentucky. I do think people think she's representative of the far right anti-gay Christian base however, and she's doing them no favors.

They have to be very careful not to do that in the office or during official duties, when they're "on the job".

Gavin Newsom in San Francisco as mayor performed same-sex weddings even though it was illegal. Did he ever get put in jail? He most certainly did not.”
The big difference is that Newsom, now California lieutenant governor, knew when to stop. Thus Newsom fired back to Huckabee on Twitter this week, “Once the court ordered me to stop, I did. I was never in contempt of court — unlike Kim Davis. Get your facts right.” Newsom told me Wednesday, “We would never have defied a court order.”
Religious conservatives like Huckabee want to see Davis’ five-night stint in jail as proof of the left’s war on Christianity. They argue that it was excessive for U.S. District Judge David L. Bunning to jail Davis for standing up for her religious beliefs.
My first instinct was to view the jailing of Davis as excessive. Surely, I thought, the judge could have stopped Davis from preventing same-sex marriages without jailing her. But the judge released Davis Tuesday after essentially brokering an accommodation that allows Davis to keep her office, while staffers process marriage licenses — not under the clerk’s name, which she said would violate her religious beliefs, but under the county’s imprimatur. It’s an outcome that should allow all couples to wed and free Davis from participating in an exercise that violates her religious beliefs. If Davis cannot accept that generous compromise, then she has a problem that only can be solved by quitting.
UC Berkeley Law Professor John Yoo, who served in the administration of George W. Bush, put it this way: People have a right based on religious grounds not to be forced to participate in same-sex marriages, but “you don’t have a right to be a county clerk. The producer just asks him to do things and say things, and provokes other people to ask him things, but he knows the questions are fake so his answers were usually short or nonexistent. I could see his disinterest in the show within 10 minutes. And then when it was just us he asked me when I started filming and if I liked it, and after i made it extremely known I didn't like it at all, I asked him if he did, and he shook his head and I asked why and he changed his answer and said I like it medium, maybe thinking I would tell someone, but with certain inflections in his voice that gave me every reason to suspect what I've said. I know it's probably an unpleasant truth for everyone involved, but that kid will likely not end up loving the show or the people making him do it.
