I have two of them. This one is from my Mennonite grandmother:
2 pounds beef with soup bone
2 carrots
1 medium cabbage head
2 medium onions
4 medium potatoes
2 cups fresh tomatoes (you can used canned)
6 whole pepper kernels
1/2 coup soup cream
1 bay leaf and some dill or parsley
A cup of beets (chopped) is optional
Cover meat with cold water and bring to a boil
Let simmer until almost tender. Add water if needed to keep meat covered
One hour before serving, add chopped vegetables along with seasoning
Potatoes may be cooked separately and added to the soup just before you serve it.
Right before serving, you can add sour cream. Grandma never used sour cream, though!

Recipe from non-Mennonite Mother!
2 TB butter
1/2 cup minced onion
1/4 cup chopped celery
1/4 cup flour
pinch of salt
pinch of pepper
3 cups water
2 cups chopped cabbage (sometimes she shredded it)
2 cups cooked and diced ham
3/4 cup sour cream (optional)
Melt butter and add onion and celery until tender. Add flour, salt and pepper and blend until smooth.
Add water and cook until mixture comes to a boil, stirring constantly.
Add cabbage. Cover and simmer until cabbage is tender (10 to 15 minutes).
Stir in ham and continue to cook until thoroughly heated
If you use sour cream, blend it in right before serving, but make sure it doesn't boil.

Thinking back, in the ham and cabbage soup recipe, I can remember my mother using a cup or so of ham broth instead of all water. It's been awhile since I used that recipe.

Ginger works much better. On cruises, dramamine did absolutely nothing for my kids, while ginger really does seem to help. They only get nauseous on the first day out; after that they are fine. I don't know if ginger has long-term effects but it really did wonders for us.

I used Sea Bands and Gin Gins when we were deep sea fishing and catamaran-ing.
I generally tolerate boats really well and only felt a slight tinge of nausea now and then.

Capsules. Work wonders. The strange thing is that the kids don't get sick on ferry rides, speed boats, violently rocking tenders, amusement park rides, but gently moving cruise ships do it to them every time, and only on the first day at sea. Yes, and I really do think that this is one of the reasons she doesn't want to meet Kate. I believe that deep down Milo is very afraid that Kate won't live up to the saint that Milo has made her out to be. This, of course, would destroy Milo's very reason for living.

I have looked at it, but along the line I became so lost in the players there that I have no idea what is going on...who is suing whom, and trying to figure out the minor characters is just really confusing. It's clear, though, that BV's lead attorney may be in some serious trouble, along with his client. You know, some time ago many said here that you just can't do what BV has done and get away with it...that sometime (may be soon, may be later) he will do something to the wrong person and all hell will break loose. It looks like that time finally came.

OT but I found this recipe this morning. It looks simple and good.
Butternut squash and black bean enchilada skillet.
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 cups butternut squash, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
1/2 of a large yellow onion, chopped
Salt
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
6 corn tortillas, cut into strips
1 (15 ounce) can enchilada sauce
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro, plus more for serving
1 cup grated pepper jack cheese
For serving:
Cilantro
Sliced green onions
Lime wedges
Sour cream
1. To a large cast-iron skillet over medium heat, add the oil. Add the butternut squash and onions to the pan. Season with salt and add the cumin and chili powder. Cook, stirring often, about 5 minutes. Stir in the black beans and the corn tortilla strips. Pour the enchilada sauce over top, stir in the cilantro and bring everything to a simmer. My neighbor subscribes and loves it. She's not into going to the store and enjoys having everything dropped at her door. She's a vegetarian and said that everything's been tasty.
Well, neighbor forgot to put her delivery on hold before she leaves town for Thanksgiving with her family, and gave me a box of 3- 2 person meals.
I think I have Lentil Bolognese, Cod with Acorn Squash and Cous Cous and Tortilla Soup.
It's packed nicely, and the ingredients look very fresh as I peeked inside.
I'll let you know how the meals turn out!
DH had just been telling our neighbor that we were thinking about getting his parents a BA gift certificate for Christmas.
It's getting tough on them to do everything from the shopping to cooking to putting it on the table. MIL is not as adept at pulling together meals out of the pantry and fridge- sort of struggles (worried sigh).
So, we think this might work for them, so this is a wonderful win/win.

You know I'll own it, there is something fascinating about Kate. Or at least her personality disorder. Maybe that's the true crime/sociologist in me. I think her approach is interesting.
Count my vote as her not even knowing what's going on. I really and truly don't think she registers the world the way a normal person would. She has such a fundament problem with connecting with people, that something as serious as the biggest, certainly one of the most random terrorist attacks in years--simply doesn't resonate with her. Due to her personality disorder, if it's not happening to her, she can't register it, understand it, or relate to it. I think eventually she'll hear about this, but it will be no more of a blip on her radar than some news story about a two car accident.
I would feel sorry for her but I wonder if it's an ignorance is bliss thing. Maybe she's actually better off not really registering the horrors of the world like the rest of us do.

Yes, admin, I was thinking about this, too, and it goes back to the episode at the toy store where she said that she doesn't see other people. That's about the truest thing she's ever said. At that point, she admitted her inability to see things around her, but it all had to do with her and her needs, Looking at it sociologically, though, I'm not sure what personality disorder this falls under. Certainly narcissism comes into play, but it appears to go hand-in-hand with something else.
Remember "the bombings or whatever?" Just look back over all her tweets in which something happened to someone else, and she turns it all around and makes whatever it is all about her, saying that she had the same experience. She has the uncanny ability to do this, and she can't stop herself from doing it. A horror in her life is her dishwasher breaking or the need to replace an appliance, or having to shovel her driveway. It really is a bizarro world in which she lives and I really hope that it's not genetic and the kids will grow up with an awareness of things around them and that they are not the center of their own universe.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers. My son says he should be able to fly out from Lyon tomorrow (he gets a connecting flight in Munich). I have never liked the idea of his being over there since that horrible attack at the newspaper office. I know bad things happen here with all these shootings but when you look at the size of the U.S. and the size of France, I don't like the odds in France.
Anyway he is supposed to fly back there on Friday with his fiancee and they were going to spend a few days in Paris but I don't know if that will happen now. Prayers for victims and their families.

I actually was moved by what Geraldo said about it. He's a narcissist himself and it was almost like for the first time he really understood what an attack like this means. His voice was shaking as he said it's a whole different thing reporting on these things when it's someone you love involved. Much like Kate I don't think he can understand things like this unless it affects him directly.

I heard on CNN yesterday that France has about 6000 citizens who have declared membership or support of ISIS. They do not have the resources to track all these people. What a mess. I'm sure Canada and the U.S. have the same issue. Scary beyond belief.

Europe, and Russia, are now going through what we went through 15 years ago. It sucks. They're really going to have to reassess how they're going to handle this kind of guerrilla terrorism. And I think based on the president's latest comments, he's prepared to go to war this time, leading the charge.
For all the negative talk about the wars we've been through over the last 15 years, this is a reminder that when you're in that moment and your national has just been attacked so viciously at its very heart, it's much harder to just tell people to sit tight. No, you tell people we're going to see justice for this. It's what people need to hear right now. Hindsight changes things.

My theory is that this behavior is encouraged for filming. None of the kids are mature enough to realize it yet, but they will be embarrassed by their behavior that has been filmed. I believe the bad behavior is encouraged and edited so Kate comes off as the overwhelmed single mother of eight. Also, it is TLC's playbook to sprinkle in vacations and the house renovations just to have something of interest to film because otherwise, what else do they have? When coming in on planes and trains the government has much more control over the situation. It also may mean that the borders are "closed" to those trying to immigrate to the country.

Oh, absolutely true, and to me, this is one of the most frightening (and creepiest) things about Milo. She lives in a fantasy world that she has built for the two of them, with Kate at the center and herself taking on the role of protector, advocate, supporter, and yes, love interest (or at least she wants to be).
If I were Kate, Milo would terrify me and my skin would be crawling. I often wonder why Kate doesn't tell Milo to cease and desist, but perhaps she knows that to cut her off cold turkey might have dangerous consequences so she just goes with it, ignoring her most of the time and throwing her occasional crumbs. Off topic, but Blue Apron is everywhere. They must be doing a big marketing push. I've seen several commercials for it now and it's always advertising on the internet.
60 Minutes did a great piece of the Syrian refugee crisis. So many countries have opened their borders to them but it's an absolute mess. Many of them die on the journey, and there aren't enough social services to help them once they're in their new country. The international world really is in shambles right now, and we desperately need a strong president to lead us into the next four years.
The reports early this morning were that planes, trains and automobiles were all coming in and out of the borders just fine, there was just a lot of extra security and wait times.
I'm not sure the borders ever were really closed. More just severely tightened for a couple hours, a handful of planes diverted, and the media ran with it because closed borders are exciting. Look at France's border. Because of the EU there aren't many checkpoints anymore in Europe. Going to country to country in most areas is just like crossing a state border here. There's no guard or gate. The logistics of suddenly "closing" hundreds of thousands of roads in and out of France never made much sense.

When Trump explained this at the debates, he said the bottom line is he's fine with immigrants here legally, but he wants the illegal ones to go. In other words, he wants us to follow the law on immigration.

Usually it's hours to days. I checked on flights from Paris to Toronto; some were delayed but none were shown as cancelled. I think there may have been a translation problem with the "borders closed" announcement. From what I've read, border crossings were delayed, and there was heightened security, but any closure was short. How long were people holed up in the Superdome after Katrina? I think they were at their breaking point within a few days. Horrible, but they did have to go somewhere.

I was in Washington DC on 9/11. All flights, trains, and buses were closed down. No rental cars were available, I was there for job training and we had to stay an extra 4 days to start going home. We finally got a rental car and we had to drive through New York in order to do drop offs of our trainees in RI, CT, NH and Vermont. It was scary seeing the Pentagon get hit and knowing people who worked there. I can just imagine the fear and sorrow of the people in Paris and of course the people world wide. My prayers are ascending for all.
