Recap: Kate Plus 8 "Gosselins in Space": Super fun!

Coming up on Kate Plus 8! They're heading off "own" a summer vacation. "A" summer vacation is actually a fair way to say it, since they just got back from two other baller summer vacations, New Orleans and the Poconos. It's definitely not their only one this summer like most families.

Hey, did they go here straight from New Orleans? Wouldn't that have made more sense? Or did they come down here separately? How wasteful, if so.

This space camp in Alabama actually looks deliriously fun, with lots of simulators and enthusiastic instructors, but wouldn't the kids enjoy it a lot more going off to overnight space camp, or any camp, without their mother?

Not surprisingly, the extent of Kate's "training" of the dogs is to yell at them to "stop!" By the way, they weren't doing anything wrong. Just wrestling with each other. Totally normal puppy behavior, and actually, important to their development, as they learn their own strength, begin to understand the concept of play fun versus going too far, and have good exercise and bonding time with each other.

Mady describes them as pretty terrible puppies, who jump up on them all the time, scratch them, and don't listen. Well, that's because they aren't trained. Footage shows they won't even let themselves be leashed up and walk with the kids. They are five months old, this is absurd. We'll do puppy school when Kate gets the chance, Kate remarks. She's hopeless. There are no bad dogs, just bad owners.

If I sound like I'm in a bad mood, I am. I have to watch this drivel on TLCgo again because apparently, Playstation Vue won't keep episodes in my DVR more than a couple weeks. Curses. See my last recap for all the problems with this stupid app. Namely, the app does not allow you to pause and resume the program without starting over from the beginning, the commercials are five minutes long, and you're forced to watch endless promos of fat people and the Dugggars.

The kids, who aren't doing anything wrong, are being hollered at by Kate that the house is trashed and they're not going to come back from vacation to dirty floors and a dishwasher full of dirty dishes. The kids obediently clean up, not giving her any lip. Why couldn't Kate just ask them in a normal tone to please tidy up the house and help her with do her to-do list? Does she think kids will only obey if you scream and snap at them? Good God, she's just awful lately.

Some packing footage, which is boring and almost exactly like the packing footage for New Orleans.

Cara takes a break from picking at a hangnail to admit that she had actually always wanted to go to space camp. That's good. I'm glad the twins are enthusiastic about this. Cara even spoke.

Space camp is an immersive program that lets kids get a taste of what it's like to be an astronaut, Kate reads from her script. Kids, Kate. Lets kids experience space. Drop them off and go the F away. Jesus.

Rocket things, says Kate. I punch her in the face, virtually.

Well this is impressive. The actual CEO of the joint, Dr. Deborah Barnhart, is their host. If you're interested in her resume, it's pretty stacked. She was one of the first women captains in the Navy and post-military worked on classified satellite technology. I'm sure she'll be reduced to "Ms. Space Lady Cadet" soon.

They zip up in rather cute flight suits. First up, a simulator that imitates tumbling. Aaden and Joel have proven to be game for trying new things. They are usually positive and cheerful, first in line, and set a good example for their siblings. While the other siblings were worried about losing their breakfast, they were having a blast in the simulator. Somehow, Kate hasn't projected all her fears and freak outs onto the boys.

Oh, yeah, Collin's totally MIA on this wildly fun journey, which is sad, and once again no one explains this. If you missed the initial episode where Kate talked about him, or the People article, you'd be lost, that is if you even noticed he's gone. They keep the editing disjointed enough you might not.

Kate's going to try the simulator, and the kids practically beg her not to scream and make a scene. Really! There's other people here besides them, it's not 2009 and they didn't manage to buy out the whole place this time, and the kids are clearly at an age where she's starting to really embarrass them. I'm with them, could she please just hold it together for once, and if she can't, then don't particulate.

Kate remarks that it looks like the electric chair. Heh, one only wishes.

"Pretend you're in your bed at home!" one of the kids suggests. What? What's happening in that bed? And I never thought Steve was the type.

Kate doesn't like the simulator of course, but at least she seems to somewhat be trying not to have a total meltdown. A few screams get out, but she does try. The kids laugh at her, heh.

Yea! Five minutes of fat people commercials!

Next up, moon walking, where the simulator imitates what it's like to bounce around on the moon. One of the walks is called the bunny hop. Kate is either imitating a bunny, or making fun of a disabled reporter. I cannot tell which.

Fun, funny, and super fun are this family's go-to adjectives lately. And that's about it.

Next up, the lunar mission, which is very similar to something I did as a 6th grader at some kind of museum on a field trip. They simulate check-lists, problems, and other things like that similar to what you would encounter on a real mission. Nobody's mother was there. It was way cool. It's starting to just get humiliating to see Kate front and center everywhere for activities that are clearly geared toward camp kids, not their mothers. She is Rosalind Russell, always there, always in the center, always along for what should be the children's ride.

I'm afraid, Alexis, you would be playing the role of the cow. Don't feel bad, Natalie Wood had to do it too.

A lot of the instructors here look more like minimum wage high school and college hires, not professional scientists. I could be wrong, but that makes it seem much less legit to me and more just summer-camp like. In my brief google of this place apparently it did almost go bankrupt recently.

They're fighting over who is going to be on the "ground" in mission control and who is going to go to space. It sounds petty as most of their arguments usually are, but I actually remember it being a really big deal on my middle school field trip who would be mission control and who would be in the space ship. Naturally mission control sounded boring and stupid to most of us. As I recall some saintly teacher talked up how important and fun mission control was such that we fancied ourselves Ed Harris saving humanity and that smoothed it all over quickly, because that's what adults who are good with kids do.

Why is Kate even chiming in here about what she wants to do (Go to space, of course. Doofus.)? This is the kids' thing. You take the leftovers like a normal mother or better yet go run some errands and pick them up when it's over.

Well, Mady's called this exactly right so I'll just quote it: "I think she has this problem where, like, she doesn't realize that like, we are children, and, like usually, like the fun, like children like enriching experiences are for the children? So like, she always has to do like the best part?" I'll forgive the likes and everything-is-a-question talk this time because she's nailed it. Heh, it was only a matter of time before the kids woke up. The question is what happens next? Will they continue to let her get away with it, or will they pull a Missy Francis (resident patron saint of screwed over child stars), funnel all their own money back into their secret accounts then cut ties with their mother once and for all the second they become adults? Time will tell.

Kate thinks it's cute she is insisting on being at the forefront of all this. She wants to be the flight director, who is the one in charge. It's not cute. It's freaking annoying and it's annoying the kids. Oh my god, Joel wants to be the flight director, as he should want that, and even Mady tells Kate to back the F off and let Joel be flight director. Good lord. Again, not cute, not funny.

What's even more fascinating is that Kate makes a comment that she knows she should just sit back in mission control and not be in the spaceship. So, then why can't she control herself and do what she knows is the right thing to do for the sake of her kids? Fascinating.

It took four hours to figure out how to have some teamwork and accomplish this mission? Please tell me Doofus here is exaggerating.

Kate and Mady disparage Joel for awhile, and then they launch a ship and go for a space walk. An extremely long conversation about how the space suits don't fit just right. Wouldn't this make just a wonderful couple of days for eight Make a Wish kids? Sigh.

As per her usual, Kate is shouting at the kids and barking orders when they're not 100% Johnny-on-the-spot. But that's the whole point of activities like this, you get faced with sometimes pretty challenging problems and you pool your kid brains together and work through it. Nope, it won't be as fast as most adults could do this, but this isn't a race, this is a learning opportunity.  Having Mom yelling in your headset what to do defeats the whole purpose.

Does anyone else find it weird and detached when Kate refers to her own children as "people"? As in, people were very disorganized on this mission. Heh, what?

Three of the kids appear to be doing the most allegedly exciting part of this mission, space walking to repair something. It's not all that. They kind of bounce up some cheap scaffolding. Big whoop. Nonetheless Alexis begins to have a meltdown worthy of the most tenacious five-year-old, lamenting over and over how unfair this all is that she doesn't get to "space walk" i.e. bounce up some cheap scaffolding. She even balls her hands up in fists and pounds them on the table. Geez! Kate's response is to agree it's not fair because she, Kate, would like to do the space walk too.  First, this looks like yet another activity that would make Doofus here yell and scream, so I don't really believe this is up her alley. Second, what an absolute child. Instead of, as my teacher did for us when we felt the same, helping this distraught child learn how to cope with that "unfair" feeling she will experience throughout her life, she essentially validates her. Terrible parenting. How about remind her how this kid and her family is taking the place of eight sick children who would appreciate this whole thing in whatever role they are assigned a hell of a lot more than she does, and wouldn't worry about what's "unfair."

They finish the mission, and Alexis is still pouting. The adjectives are getting way more sophisticated now. That wasn't just fun. It was super fun. As we were discussing on the blog, this family doesn't exactly engage with their audience like the Irwins do.  Plus, it didn't look fun for many of them. Many of them seemed really disenchanted by the roles they were assigned to, so bad they just couldn't get over it. It's very irritating to repeatedly watch someone describe something on a reality show that bears no resemblance to the truth.

Next they basically play a video game involving fighter jets where the goal is to shoot the other people down. I can hang with the best of them playing first person shooter games like Grand Theft Auto or Uncharted, but even this seems rather morbid. It's not like you're shooting a computer fighter jet. That's supposed to be the other person in your path. This was also super fun, by the way.

The twins are suddenly referring to Kate as "Mother," which I totally dig and is so much better than the childish "Mommy." Very Norman Bates.

Commercials. Whitney after all this time is still freaking out over maybe being pregnant. So take the dang test already, good Lord. I feel like I've been watching her having a pregnancy scare for a month.

Next, the Centrifuge, which is basically an amusement park ride that spins you around. Oh, this is rich. Kate is going to sit this one out because she fears she'll vomit. How come just last episode in the Poconos Alexis wasn't allowed to sit out the boat ride when she felt like she might vomit? Does Doofus even care how hypocritical she is? She has to know she does it. Ohhh, that was "very fun."

I see TLC is quietly rolling out a scripted series, and have a handful of other new reality shows ready to go that look okay. Who knows where the Gosselins will fit in with all these changes.

Next up, simulating a helicopter crash into the water. It's painful to watch Mady try to carry this show, try to be funny, cute, the Ruthie Camden of the cast, when she's just not.

When Mady says certain things it's painfully obvious, like when she smugly remarks that she didn't want to do this simulator because the helmets weren't fashionable and they didn't want to get their makeup wet. The simulator dumps them into the water and they get soaked. This feels morbid again. Everyone is laughing at the pure hilarity of a helicopter "crash." They then play a game where they can only squawk like a chicken when they crash. Um. Weird. The kids want to do this like a dozen times. Aren't there other kids at the camp would are waiting to do this? Does anyone ask, can we do it again, if no one else is waiting to use it? Good grief. Kate won't participate in this one either, which means we are spared her screaming and carrying on yet again.

Finally they graduate, and get a scout-like patch to commemorate it. A drone shot of nothing. Drone guy is being lazy. I wasn't as impressed with this space camp as I thought I would be. I've heard it's really expensive, and for that kind of money you would expect more than camp counselors who will be undeclared majors and freshman at the local community college next year. I expected more things like meet and greets with a real astronaut, million dollar telescopes, and funky science experiments you just couldn't do at home.

Is Kate getting in a dig at production? She remarks quite firmly that she really wishes they had spent several days at Space Camp. Heh, production whizzed them in and out in one day. There was a budget for that one!

They head to City of Orange Beach in Alabama and a huge house rental that's gorgeous. They have a mountain of grocery bags and coolers in the van and it's very late. What the heck? When did they get all this food?! It must have taken hours. I bet production got it. Why don't they just go out to eat and spare the aggregation? If they can afford a house like this they can afford to just go out to eat or at the very least get take-out and bring it back. Kate claims there is nothing around so that's why they have to haul in their own food. Um, this is City of Orange Beach:

And this is their restaurant Yelp page, with no less than twenty-two different places you can go eat.

Who is she kidding? Why does she do this anyway, haul in all this food when they could just go out to eat? She loves all the other luxuries of an upper middle class life, I would think eating out on the company credit card would be high on her list. If I had to guess, I think maybe she likes the martyrdom of preparing all their own meals? So strange.

Her spoiled children just must have a beach vacation at least once a year. Are these little princes and princesses aware that much of Pennsylvania's children will never see an ocean's shore in their lifetimes, let alone every year? There is a lot of poverty in the rural areas. What's more, there are so many beautiful lakes and rivers right in their own backyard what a shame that is not good enough for them. And this is after they just went to one of the most beautiful areas in the whole country, the Poconos, just a hop skip and a jump away and far less cheaper than renting a mansion in Alabama. Open your eyes.

Kate says it's 11 o'clock at night. Geez. I wonder if this was all the same day, the space camp, grocery shopping, and settling into the beach house. They sure make it seem like it is. What are Alabama's child labor laws and are they allowed to film children, even during the summer, from the early morning hours to almost the next morning? Doubt it, but as they state hop to film with no one watching and holding them accountable, no one will ever be caught.

Next time, yet another vacation, at the beach in Alabama.

Admin, thank you so much for this Saturday morning treat! Snarkalicious!

I had a bagel with me at my friend's house the other day. I asked her 9-year-old if she'd like to share it with me, and she said yes. And of course, I gave her the top half.
I'd like to think 999 out of 1000 adults would do that -- give the preferred piece to the child. But then there's #1000, who kept
the unbroken Statue of Liberty lollipop for herself, and gave the broken one to her son.

It sounds like TFW's selfish spirit was alive and well at space camp. And it was even worse there, because the place is specifically for kids. What she wanted shouldn't even have been in the equation.

Thanks for another opportunity to "enjoy" the show without having to watch.

Your recap was somewhere between "very fun" and "super fun" to read. Thank you.

They tell you to put the oxygen mask on yourself first then help the children, but in that moment I think most parents would put the oxygen mask on their child first out of pure instinct.

For as much as Kate claims all about the kids, it's actually all about her. If the kids got to do something first at this camp, it was actually because Kate didn't want to do it anyway. But if Kate wanted to do something she was front and center, or if she didn't get to do it, she would pout like her own 12 year old. Really the best way to describe it, as has been said for years, is she is emotionally stunted at just about 12.

FlimsyFlamsy said... 5

Admin, you said the trip was definitely not their only one this summer, like most families. But my guess is that the majority
of single-parent families -- which TFW claims hers is -- with 8 children don't get even ONE summer trip. And if they do manage to piece and patch and save up plane fare for their trip, they sure can't also afford whatever that space camp admission was, times 8.

There was something else wrong and I couldn't put my finger on it and you just said it. Do these kids ever go anywhere(but school) without Kate? They are almost 13 and 16. Camp? A store? The mall? Someone's birthday party? Do the younger 6(well 5 now) ever go anywhere on their own? For example do you think Leah ever goes to visit a friend, just her? This is all so weird and disturbing to consider.

TFW really missed out on some great shopping, eating and the 75 years old! I think, Japanese cherry trees in Big Spring Park she and Steve could of gotten a picnic basket and some wine and had a great time and believe me, no one would of bothered them.

The kids would have been over the moon!

For those of you who don't know, this is the episode that got the worse ratings not just for the season but the entire Kate plus 8 show has ever gotten, the ratings for this one was at 560,000.The 2nd worse one was that decade of Kate that i think got around 600,000 views. With ratings like this i felt this episode alone would be the point where TLC would finally think enough is enough with Kate but i'm not entirely sure.Like what people said before,If TLC continues to film, they'd would not only show they don't give a crap about the well being of these kids but IMO they'd show to have this strange devotion to Kate to the point where they wouldn't give a crap about how low her ratings will be.I wonder if the duggars got ratings like this would TLC quickly cancel them or no?

____
That's actually rather remarkable. They went somewhere which is a top fantasy for many people, one of the few not-a-beach vacations we've ever seen this family take. So what accounts for the poor ratings? I don't recall the air date---did that have something to do with it?

Based on your recap, Admin (surely better than the episode, as always), this sounds like the usual recipe for disaster, with Mommy competing with kids at every turn and never just sitting back and letting them have the spotlight. What does she gain by always inserting herself front and center? Surely it must be clear to her by now that the draw is the kids, NOT her. It was one thing for her to be the "interpreter" of what was going on when the kids were 3 to 5 years old. It's another thing altogether when the kids are well able to speak for themselves and not have Mommy be the focus of their every activity. Bow out already, K8, if you want this travesty of a show to survive. Your presence is clearly a damper on both your kids AND your audience.

This was on earlier under the puppy picture and was swiffered. Now it is back.

carijo42@mandykerschner When she realized that Collin was going to be removed from the home, she planned the breeding and birthing of Max and Nanuq to deflect Collin not being at home with his brothers and sisters. TLC filmed Family Game Night in Jan. 2016 and aired it just recently so the fans would think that he was back home and everything was alright in Gosselin Land. Better put your seat belts on because it will be puppypalooza until Collin comes home, if he ever comes home.

Jeanne said... 21

I suspect this did all happen in one day. It's cheaper for filming to get the footage in one day and edit it later. There is no way Alabama has child labor laws for reality shows, is there?

Alexis's breakdown probably had a lot of factors, including a long, exhausting day. (My niece still has some breakdowns due to TBI as part of her illness.) Here's the thing. There is no way this is the first breakdown Alexis has ever had. Yet Kate seems to have no way of dealing with the breakdown. "I wanted to do it to. It's not fair." is a crappy way to handle it. Has Kate ever parented her or just shoved her off? Alexis is old enough to be learning some coping techniques with prompting from her mother. For ex., "I know you're upset Alexis. Can you please take a deep breath? That's very good. Can you please blow your nose? Yes, I hear you that it's not fair. I know you're upset. This is how we're going to do [activity] today even if it's not fair. Now why don't you do [insert a different task] now?" You combine that with caresses and an I love you. Then you can discuss it further when you have more time and she's not upset. But you have to break the tantrum. I am assuming she is a child with a reason why tantrums happen rather than just a spoiled brat.

FlimsyFlamsy said... 22

Jeanne (#21), you presented a kind, mature, and reasonable way TFW could've handled the situation with TFW. And she never in a million years could've managed it.

As Admin said, TFW is 12. How can she be expected to effectively parent someone who is practically a peer? Look at how M so succinctly summed up her mother's issue with inappropriately inserting herself into situations. Sadly, she's probably already surpassed her mother's level of insight.

Kate inserts herself because she believes she is integral to both the activity and the drama of the show. No one would watch 7 kids dis at space camp. Kate's role is to create drama and conflict and responses that viewers either love "such a great mom to be with them" or snark on. If the show is watched as a guilty pleasure, she and producers know damn well the more verbal diarrhea she has, the better for OMG factor.
The coolers of food puzzled me to no end, especially since it was in a separate vehicle than the family. I'm guess production went and shopped, and the van was there when kids got to the house so they could film tired, hungry, cranky kids and mom unloading the food. It was all in coolers, probably waiting for hours. Of course Kate would prefer going out, but production won't pay. There is hassle in filming in public places thT they don't need, and there's no interaction with kids sitting around table waiting to be served. But Kate cooking, cleaning and complaining? Priceless

FlimsyFlamsy said... 25

Sherri (#23), it's always been my contention that a part of why TFW disappears into the kitchen -- if she did in fact cook in this episode, which I'm not even convinced of -- is simply to be away from her children. She's just not that into them.

Thanks, Jane for posting. I saw this awhile back and was going to post it. Can't remember if I did or not. Watching GGs's right now. lol

My top 4 favorite episodes are:

Journey to the Center of Attention when Dorothy sings What'll I Do at the Rusty Anchor. When I first saw this years ago, it brought me to tears. Bea Arthur deserved an Emmy for that episode!

Another Emmy deserved performance is Dorothy when she was sick in Sick and Tired and told off the dr. who dismissed her and told her to get her hair colored. He said his wife did and she was now a new woman.

One that gets me every time is Brother, Can You Spare that Jacket? When Blanche puts the winning lottery ticket in the pocket of a aviator jacket and Sophia accidentally gives it to the man who came to get clothes donations to the homeless shelter, the girls go on a mad search for it.

A Midwinter's Night Dream. When Dorothy quoted Puck at the end of the show, I remembered it and it helped me answer the million dollar question on WWTBAM.

I have always thought this! Her bedroom, sleeping as late as she could and it forced Jon and others to do work that she was supposed to be helping with. We all know what Jon did until he took her specifically made coffee then he had an hour drive to work.

She fed them lunch, then 4 hour naps. Then Jon took over when he came home. Back to bed.

The trips with Steve. Go for a week at a time, come home, pack a fresh bag and head out again. A week away and a week home is best for my family. The fans just took this as Gospel from the Great Kate.

When you do the math, that is being away from your children for 6 months out of the year. The kids would of been much better off if she lived in San Diego with Steve, since she loves it so much there with him, half the year and just flew in on the TLC private, corporate jet for filming.

The kids would of been much better off. They could of did after school activities, played sports.

But, they would of been much, much better off if they hadn't of filmed at all!

Those kids will never get to spend time away from the compound, unless they're getting kicked out for good.
I'm going to take an educated guess and say that Kate never went to camp as a kid, so if there's any camping to be done, Kate will be at the center, giving herself what she thinks so so richly deserves because SHE missed out.

Thank you, Jane!

What gets me is, Tvland and the Hallmark channels have chopped up the episodes so bad so they can run their precious commercials, that chunks of conversations are left out. The same with TAGS!

One scene with the lady prisoner, she asks if Andy will pull up a chair and just talk to her. Bam, commercial! When they come back, the LP says, I just want to thank you. AG, for what? By just talking to me.

What they took out is a very nice story about 2 people that dated for years and years before they got married.

On GG, they took out Sophia telling Dorothy that life was like a piece of shredded wheat. Stuck in between your gums. If you don't do anything, it gets worse. If you get it out, it heals and you feel better. This is when her daughter got married and she never had the chance to tell Stanley off and goodbye since the divorce.

Based on your recap, Admin (surely better than the episode, as always), this sounds like the usual recipe for disaster, with Mommy competing with kids at every turn and never just sitting back and letting them have the spotlight. What does she gain by always inserting herself front and center
******
Kate thinks she's entertaining and highly watchable. I truly believe the Kate believes she's all that and a bag of chips. Her confidence knows no bounds.
Kate is also under the impression that as long as she acts like a lunatic, people will talk about her, and if people talk about her, she stays relevant.

"FOR THE MOMENT?"

There was something else wrong and I couldn't put my finger on it and you just said it. Do these kids ever go anywhere(but school) without Kate?
****
Those kids will never get to spend time away from the compound, unless they're getting kicked out for good.
I'm going to take an educated guess and say that Kate never went to camp as a kid, so if there's any camping to be done, Kate will be at the center, giving herself what she thinks so so richly deserves because SHE missed out.

********************************

Her throwing that moose dog on the ground and gripping how cold she was so immature. Her telling the kids they were no longer Gosselins and it scared those kids half to death. And talking to Piper like she did.

Well, remember when Sarah showed her her office? She looked like she had done died and went to Heaven. Her dream job. Stay at home, isolated from the kids in her own studio doing interviews like the former governor and vp nominee.

And still film, making that money.

Agreed. It's hard in these recaps to talk about every single thing that happened otherwise they'd be even more ridiculously long! But there are so many little moments where Kate is so proud of herself, and thinks herself to be so cute, or funny, or smart.

In this particular episode, she made a very dumb, obvious pun. Forgot what it was. Anyway, she was SOOO proud of herself for it. Was practically winking at the camera. She really has a shockingly grandiose sense of self, beyond all comprehension.

Admin (#35), anyone who doubts how smitten TFW is with herself should remember her spinning like a princess at Disneyland and asking Jon, who was filming her, "Are you getting this?"

Like Narcissus falling in love with his reflection in a pool of water, TFW fell in love with seeing herself on screen. And like an addict trying to repeat that first amazing high, she continues to chase the dragon.
A destroyed marriage, lost friendships, broken custody agreements, a child removed from her home -- nothing and
no one will stop her from that pursuit.

I suspect this did all happen in one day. It's cheaper for filming to get the footage in one day and edit it later. There is no way Alabama has child labor laws for reality shows, is there?

&&&

It used to be a two week trip would net them three-odd episodes. Like Alaska.

Now they're cramming everything into one or two days per episode. Most of these trips it's clear filming was all happening at once. In that respect, we're talking about huge savings in money. Every day you keep production out there your budget soars. Totally taking a wild guess at numbers, but let's say they are able to squeeze everything into two days in Alabama for a budget of $50,000. If that's the case, 600-700 in ratings might not be so bad given how much they cut corners.

It's possible even the food budget is taking a hit. Better to allocate $600 to grocery shopping for the cast and crew for a couple days than spend $1200 on catering.

GollyGee said... 40

I remember when they were finished with Space Camp, they showed a map and a white van (cartoon) driving south zigzagging on its way to Orange Beach.

There is no way they filmed all day and made it to OB in one day. It is a 6 to 6 and a half hour drive from Huntsville to OB. They had to stay overnight in Huntsville and left the next day.

I also looked up Alabama film laws.

http://www.employmentlawhandbook.com/wage-and-hour-laws/state-wage-and-hour-laws/alabama/child-labor-laws/

http://alabamafilm.org/faq.htm

13 years old and younger

Alabama child labor laws specifically prohibit children 13 years of age and younger from working in any trade or occupation performed in a street or public place, such as distributing or selling newspapers, magazines, periodicals, or candy. This prohibition does not apply in situations where youth under 14 years old perform the work for educational, charitable, religious, scientific, historical, literary, or nonprofit organizations, and where no true employer-employee relationship exists or where the services are performed on a voluntary basis. AL Code 25-8-39 Minors who are found to be working in violation of this restriction on working in streets or public places may be arrested on juvenile delinquency charges. AL Code 25-8-42

It's a six and a half hour drive??? Sheesh!!!

I mean, they definitely made it seem like they packed up and drove there that very night, and made it in around 11pm. I suppose it is possible they left around 3 or 4 and trucked in. I still don't know who or when the grocery shopping happened.

If they waited until the next day, why on earth was a 6 and a half hour drive putting them in there at 11 o'clock at night?

There's something off about this. Very off. Either there was a lot of unfilmed things happening over a two day period, or they really did jam an incredible amount into one day. I forgot if everyone was wearing the same clothes.

Production doesn't give two shits about this family. Or their hardworking crew, either. If they crammed in an entire day at space camp then a SIX HOUR drive, that's really reprehensible. Everyone must have been BUSHED.

Admin (#38), and that "cramming" has a human toll. Spending a day filming in Alabama is not like a Hollywood set, where there are union performers, and set tutors keeping an eye on the kids, and myriad protections for everyone out the wazoo. This day involved 7 children who aren't professional performers, and, as Sunday Stalker (#24) said, were getting cranky, hungry and tired. I'll say it again -- the
G children a human sociology experiment, and the world is watching it being performed in real time. And there doesn't seem to be anyone who can stop it.

******
The crew and TLC's minions have seen these kids travel for long hours, get shuttled from place to place, film in conditions that animals have more protections AND film all.day.long in some cases.
Case in point, the infamous boob-bouncing trip to NYC, when it was 102 muggy degrees and some of the kids quite literally passed out from exhaustion, only to have their mother and her flying monkey smack them awake.
This of course, was to prevent them from waking up at night and needing to sleep in, missing their early morning call with the film crew.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said... 47

That's right, this setup inherently lacks the protections that a set would. A set teacher would have recognized Alexis had had enough, and would have called for a break to pull her aside to speak with her, get her some water and a snack. A set teacher at that point would have assessed whether she could continue comfortably and humanely, and if not, would have pulled her.

A set teacher would have taken one look at the schedule for that day and put the kibosh on it. You don't do an entire day at space camp then go for a six hour drive only to do MORE filming at 11 o'clock at night. That's obscene.

It's also possible Alexis has special needs, and feels frustration quicker and more deeply than other children. A set teacher would be aware of that and protective of her.

You're better protected being a grip on this show then being a child. You can just call up your union if anyone is being inhumane.

I'm still shaking my head at this realizing they filmed all day then went on a six hour drive. I think it WAS the same day. They said it was. They mentioned how long the day was, how tired they were. They have no reason to lie about this. If they were going to lie they would have lied and said they DIDN'T do this all on the same day.

One of the things that I have always found most horrifying is that TLC's editing monkeys LOVE it when there is any sort of conflict or upset with the kids. The camera ZOOMS in on them, right in their face as they cry or are sad, or are sick.
There are no words for how effed up that is!
I recall when Kate announced her freebie trip to Mexico for her 40th, when she delighted in telling her kids they were NOT going and watching them meltdown to get her jollies.
One of the tup girls was driven to tears and left the kitchen area to go sit on a couch to get some space, she was that upset. Of course, the camera guy saw a great opportunity for conflict and zoomed his camera in on her.
Made me sick.

All the super-fun parties and space simulators and shiny objects in the world can't replace a brother. So it's not surprising if that one particular child was exhibiting some erratic behavior.

See, for a narcissist, that does make up for and replace a human being, a child.

But, it's unlikely most of these kids are narcissists, or even if some are, not as bad as Kate. These kinds of things AREN'T filling the void for them because they are much more normal emotionally and they are likely very deeply hurt by the loss of their brother and can't just brush off and move on like Kate can.

It's very possible their conflicts, frustration, balled up fists, are over much deeper things going on, and not over who pilots a spaceship.

When the teams were uneven during the bow and arrow shootout, I can't imagine some didn't think, if only Colin were here.

Layla said... 54

I think they did drive to the beach the same day as space camp. One of the crew daddies probably drove. It looks like the budget is much smaller than it used to be--the amount of filming they cram into a short period of time must be brutal. One day at space camp, when even Kate wished they had a week. But it looks like they are cutting every trip very short, filming from dawn til dust, and then hustling them back home. How can the kids even enjoy it? It has to be exhausting for them.

I wonder if the family's salary was lowered, too. $40K per episode is a lot, and the ratings don[t justify that kind of money. I read something about how the production company is paid a specific amount per episode of The Little Couple, which has to cover salaries and production costs. If the amount per episode for K+8 was lowered, maybe she is trying to cut production costs so that her salary stays high. She wouldn't care if the kids are run ragged, as long as she gets her money.

I wish we knew more about the behind the scenes stuff because it's so interesting as well as extremely concerning. Is Figure 8 still in charge here? I wonder if that's exactly what happened, TLC said look we have X amount of dollars to give you for it to be worth it for us. If you can do X amount of episodes for X amount of dollars, then go ahead. If you can't, no deal and no more show on TLC.

I'm betting that number is drastically lower than the good ole days. Yes, I'm sure everyone took a pay cut, crew and cast alike. They shave down budgets by cutting filming days in half. It's a win-win for them since it promotes upset stressed out kids and better footage for cheaper.

This whole thing needs another investigation by the child labor authorities. It really does. They haven't been under fire in years and I think they got lax again. If they are indeed cramming two days of filming into one, it would be very hard to do so without being in violation of child labor laws.

Take it or leave it, and they all took it, Kate included.

How anyone can enjoy watching, knowing about their divorce, the awful acrimony, the total failure to co-parent, the parental alienation, the fractured parent-child relationships, the estrangement from family, two first graders getting kicked out of school for violent behavior and one child being sent away for a year now, is beyond me.

Child labor laws are state laws, not federal laws. Every state does their own thing and it's completely inconsistent. And there has been ongoing confusion about whether exhausting laws even if they require set teachers even apply to reality show kids. I suspect with the heyday of reality shows fading, few states will waste time trying to clear this up.

The south has historically had some of the most lax child labor laws. I haven't looked at Alabama's laws but I would be surprised if they are very strict. Kate gets away with it by state hopping to a variety of jurisdictions especially those that have lax laws, hiding behind the fact that they are reality stars not actors, counting on no one out there interested in cracking down on them, and if ever caught, my guess is she would play dumb.

Not a legal response, of course, but I think a huge part of this problem is that TPTB in PA. looked the other way when it came to how hard filming was and invasive it is to children.
I think the good Governor of PA liked the weekly infomercial for PA tourism that was J+K+8 more than he cared about their little miracle tups.

Tucker's Mom (#62), and I think the illusion that the kids are not really working (started by TFW to absolve herself of responsibility) has fed into the laxness of the rules. When they're shooting in a public place, with signs up and permits for filming, it seems more like an actual workday, and people's ears might prick up about regulations. But when TLC is filming the G kids eating dinner...well, gosh, they'd be eating anyway, wouldn't they?

I don't know about any of you, but as a kid
I can't recall one dinner consumed with a boom mike dangling a few inches above my head, and a camera trained on my face. And many people's childhood meals started with saying grace, not waiting for a director
to say "action."

It's just awful that Kate lets the kids be filmed without a set teacher. The set teacher is there to monitor the kids' well-being. What parent wouldn't want that? Someone there to watch and make sure the kids are not being overworked, over-stressed, or mistreated. Someone who can fight for the kids. I know that, in that kind of situation, I would want that. But Kate does not. She couldn't care less about the harm or stress the kids have to endure, as long as they are being filmed.

I am positive that, if the kids grow up to have emotional problems due to the stress of their childhoods, she will brush it off as being their problem, not hers. She'll take no blame or responsibility for what she has done to them. She "loves" them for what she can get out of them. If they get to be too much trouble, they can hit the road. Sadly, there is no longer any question that she would banish any child who became too difficult for her.

The parent who smugly says, I'm in charge and that's never going to change. Can imagine her being countermanded by another adult, especially in respect to the kids? I don't see there being a happy outcome to that confrontation. Remember, this is the woman who asked for production people to be removed if she thought they had too many opinions about what they saw and heard. She has a lot to lose if someone with the children's best interests as his/her agenda shows up on any set that includes her.

We've seen him in episodes. We don't know how he functions in daily life. We don't know if he was on medications that helped him in this respect. This was the child that was expelled from Kindergarten at age 6 for anger, behavior problems and physical aggression toward others. If he couldn't have been helped then, perhaps these issues escalated to the point that he really does need much more therapy and help dealing with whatever is going on inside.

Kate's not saying, and I don't think Kate should say. She shouldn't have, however, continued to film the best birthday party ever without him, nor made any of this public. It's like she erased him from her life.

I'd beat their door down and take my son back. Wild horses couldn't drag me away.
Yet here's Kate, happy as a clam with her puppies and filming and vacays. She's happier than I've seen her in a long, long time.

**********************************

She's giddy and has a spring in her step!

Remember in Alaska when she jacked up Madys arm and manhandled her trying to get her to pose for the river picture? It horrified Palins entourage so bad the were about to call the police and report it.

Someone from the crew called TLC and told them what was going on. Queen Ellen and her minions got on the private jet and flew to Alaska to get it squashed.

They couldn't allow their cash cow to be arrested for child abuse! What a scandal thatMillions upon millions were at stake!

I know this possibly couldn't be true, but, Alaska gate reminds me of her making a deal about Collin. Why would that child who was sweet, kind and a great kid be taken away for a year? What on earth did she do to him? That child is innocent!

It was when the boys went golfing with Jon. They were about to leave, and TFW was rolling around on the floor with H, and C
asked his mother, "Are you gonna miss me?" She said she was -- not really paying attention to him, because she was with her pet. And C said, "Then I'm gonna miss you, too." Poor sweet boy.

Admin I have a question. If Federal law states that any public person that receives a good or service and then endorses said items, is considered by definition a paid spokesperson, and is required to disclose that? Seems to me that really, isn't most reality television just that?

I get TLC to pay me to visit Space camp, or Alaska, or NY city all tourist. I visit areas like New Orleans that need a influx of tourism, or the state Alaska that welcomes TV shows. TLC or the venue pick up the tab while my kids just "play" running in and out of camera shots, "unscripted" of course. At what point are these reality shows nothing more than commercials?

In all honesty reality shows are nothing close to reality except that it is real in the fact it is comprised of scripted situations. In the case of Kate three vacations in one summer for a stay at home mom is as far from reality as the east is from the west. Traveling all by herself, with no help and with a friend of Mady and Cara, please?

The Duggars' while maybe more likeable to some than Kate no different. We buy used and save the difference until Jim-Bob announced he uses 6 gallons of hair spray to tame his hair. Endless travel for Ginger and her new fiance, her now husband the minister at small church, she does not work. Ben and Jessa, now with two children he is in school she stays at home, same with the other married couple. Jill and her husband are missionaries yet caught a lot of flack on their Facebook page for the frequent visits back to Arkansas, with what many felt like were contributions they collected. The reality for most Americans is that if you do not work you would not be able to do much of anything, except be in dire straits.

So I say all this because if TLC wonders why the viewership has been in such a decline it is because 100's of 1000's of people no longer buy into there "reality".

Great post. Most reality shows are vehicles for selling products and making money. Period.
The state of PA was probably the biggest beneficiary of J+K+8, with tourism, good will and a virtual invite to come live there and enhance their tax base!
Sure, they package kids up with a pretty bow and they sell them to passive, low-information, gullible, and easily entertained masses that don't have the critical thinking skills to tease out the edited pablum they see on their screens from real life.
Even when real life, as in Kate's real life, is easily knowable if you have an internet connection.

Most of the reality shows I've seen, including K+8, mention in the credits something like Alaska Dept. of Tourism/Transportation or Thanks to the New Orleans Visitor's Bureau, etc. IDK if that fits or would qualify as a "disclosure" but they generally are mentioned or credited in some way. Yes, it's free advertising for the state or municipality and they generally give perks to the network or production company in the form of tax credits. I guess that might qualify as disclosure?

I can understand the frustration and anger, but what I can't grasp is how naive people were to think that mere words and promises, without any facts or logic to back them up, would cause someone to hand their vote to such an unqualified, inexperienced person and place him at the helm of this gigantic sinking ship.
*****
I don't recall anyone going on record as witnessing this. I do recall reading "sources", which I'd dismiss if not for also reading about how awfully Kate acted at the camping site, how she refused to use the makeshift latrine, and how she stormed off after ~2 hours.
I didn't think Kate would actually walk off a shoot and behave that badly in front of Sarah Palin, but we all saw her with our own eyes.
There was also the first-hand report from Robert who said Mady called and begged Jon to come and get her so she didn't have to go to Alaska. That's when Kate threatened him with jail if he dared come back around in the morning to get Mady.
Then, if course, there's the curious PR photo in Alaska, where Mady was obviously crying HARD and Kate is grinning like an idiot.
So, I tend not to dismiss reports of Kate getting rough with Mady if she was having a hard time keeping her in line in Alaska.

I do distinctly remember some rumors going around that the reason Todd Palin went off by himself was because he was upset with Kate, though I don't remember the source. I would check radar, they would often post stuff like that.

Robert Hoffman did share a firsthand story that he was there for, in which just before the Alaska trip Mady told Jon she didn't want to go on another vacation, and begged to let her stay behind with him. When Jon dropped her off at Kate's and tried to explain to her Mady didn't want to go, Kate would have none of it, and insisted Mady must go with them and can't drop out. Robert saw the whole thing. That's right in the book.

Ironically years later TFW seems to have gone forward just fine a kid down, no qualms about it. She used to think she needed all eight to make her case, now she's realizing she can cut a few loose and still keep going.

FlimsyFlamsy said... 116

I went on Kate's twitter and looked at all the pictures and I think something's been going on with Collin for a long time. That said, what I found pathetic and despicable was the first day of school 2015 picture. Collin is with his siblings and wearing an identical shirt with his two brothers but is hidden in the back, probably because she didn't put on him the pants as well and in hopes that the fact that he has no backpack won't show. Can you imagine how that went down?

"Collin, put on your brother's spare school shirt and get over there for a school picture for mommy's twitter. No, not the pants too or a backpack, just sit in the back. Smile! Ok, wave goodbye to your siblings who unlike you are going to school, go take that shirt off, you'll get it dirty and your brother needs it tomorrow and go do whatever until your tutor arrives."

I always thought Kate got rid of Collin but now I'm finally jumping in the he was removed "boat". Look at Collin's face in that picture, compare his faint smile to the genuine one his siblings have, think again about the whole situation and you will see how frightening this is. I feel like that's a scary sample of Collin's treatment. By his own mother. Who inflicts that on their child? He was probably gone somewhere in April, the last picture of him was posted on April 9th(and was presumably snapped March 27) -Easter picture. It's a strange picture too, all the children's picture this year are individual and even though his siblings are dressed in thin clothes he is wearing a tick jacket. At this point, his leave may have been imminent yet his mother's concern might have been to snap one last picture of him to tide her over until she can no longer hide he is gone and the Plus 8 has become Plus 7.

Another thought: what if Kate kept Jon in the dark because she was forced to give up Collin and she didn't want Jon to use that to get more custody with the other children?

RoxyHelen said... 120

The Alaska episode is up on youtube so after looking at the picture with Mady crying, I went and looked at that part of the video. You can see Mady arriving at the river and she's wearing the same blue jacket as her sister Cara and underneath she's wearing the pink sweater from the picture; and then you can't see her anymore for the rest of the gold searching by the river segment. I think you glimpse her far far away in a group shot, in the background, alone(there's a pink blob). If I had to guess, I'd say after Kate got her picture she told Mady she's "done" for that day. Next time you see Mady is when they meet Levi, right before they leave and she is sitting quietly and seems standoffish. The picture, the video and people who've never met(Robert and the Palins) telling complementary stories. This is too much of a conspiracy theory. There can never be this much smoke without a fire. So yes, I too believe the Mady stories from Alaska.

____

But this is a father who has visitation with ALL his children. According to what he's said, no judge ever changed it to visitation with only SOME children; he has always said he has no idea why Collin stopped coming with the others. So how on earth does Collin get removed from Kate's custody and sent somewhere only SHE knows about, and the father is NOT informed? Jon still has rights as far as the kids are concerned. What authority would remove a child from the home and not tell the father?

I don't disagree with your theory, we don't know, and may never know, the truth, but if C was taken out of her home by some legal authority (with or without her consent), how on earth could Jon being kept in the dark be justified? And by whom?

Kirkland said... 123

I'm with "Sad but true" on her question (post # 122). How could C be taken away without notifying Jon. And how is it possible Jon didn't know until it was made public? How can he be so disconnected from C? I just don't know what to make of the situation from a legal perspective. It's as though the state of Pennsylvania doesn't enforce custody agreements. From what I understand, you don't need a lawyer to enforce the custody agreement between them? Why didn't Jon go to court and insist he see ALL his kids? This went on for months and months. How long did he say it's been since he's seem C? And same goes for A? Why doesn't he push the issue?

I'm totally Team Jon, but I just don't get this. And is it possible he still doesn't know where C is?

GollyGee said... 126

Midnight Madness, he had to borrow a shirt because he was not going to school with his brothers and sisters and TFW forced Collin to put on a spare school shirt, snap the picture so she could keep the secret longer that he was not in school with his brothers and sisters.

I just wish the first time he went to pick them up and the four walked to the gate, he should of had his visitation papers with him and called the police. They would of gotten them and allowed Jon to take them with him.

But when she is in protection mode, she goes over to Jon's and screams like an escaped mental patient for Hannah to come home.

&&&&

Yes, they get involved! That's exactly law enforcement's job to enforce court orders. If there is a warrant, they are to enforce it. If there is a restraining order, they are to serve it, and if 911 is called, enforce it. And if there is a visitation order saying person A gets the kids, they are to turn the kids over.

That being said, we've heard a ton of discussion here centering around whether children should be put at risk of trauma to have orders enforced by cops. We have also heard several anecdotal stories where people say cops WON'T enforce orders like this, that they act uncomfortable and don't want to get involved.

That being the case, I would suggest going to your local chief of polices office if cops are refusing to enforce a valid order in your possession, and make a formal complaint higher up the chain. They need to do it even if they don't want to, that's why it's called law ENFORCEMENT, it's part of their job. The chief of police needs to be informed when his officers are scoffing at valid court orders.

RIP to Officer Boyer. It's been an awful weekend in Los Angeles. Four murders by violent felons out on parole, including that cop, and our dear colleague. Shock all around today as we came back to work, and mourn.

...and why just remove one child?

&&&

It actually happens quite a lot and especially when children are differently situated.

Commonly, a marginal parent (marginal due to mental illness, low IQ, or things like that) may do just fine handling the needs of a child who does not have special needs. But throw in a child who needs a parent to give them medication, keep track of therapy appointments, cooperate with the school's IEP and ensure they get special services, and all of a sudden it can be overwhelming for that parent. A parent also may not have the skills to cope with concerning or even dangerous behavior when normal things like say, time outs or removing privileges, work just fine on their other kids. Some parents will admit they are not equipped, and turn the child over to placement by CPS.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Kate is ill equipped to deal with a child with special needs, absolutely to the point of having him involuntarily removed. No DOUBT. I can't say it for sure, but a lot of signs suggest so.

IMO Sarah Palin's team should not have even said a word to Kate or anyone on her team and gone right ahead and reported her there and then. And then arrange for M to be flown back home to stay with Jon.

---------------

Would Palin's team be legally allowed to remove any of those kids and send them home without approval from Kate? Could CPS do this without an investigation? The kids weren't being abused. Some of them just didn't want to be there, and I really doubt that this would be enough reason to send them home.

Collin was pretty obviously separated from his siblings long before that(it's on film and in other pictures) but frankly I don't believe Collin was still home in May 2016. Kate always posts a picture of the 6 on their birthday and that year I think she wasn't going to even post a picture only Jon posted a picture of the table he had set for the kids and immediately after, Kate posted said picture. I think the kids aren't at the table not just because some might have been at Jon's but also because Collin was no longer at home and people would have noticed he's missing.

She's very ungrateful for her fortune circumstances.

I didn't think anyone was saying he was out of the house at that point, just that he wasn't going to school with his siblings. At that time Collin was no longer going to school with them.

I remember when she posted the pic and Collin was in it, and there was a discussion about it back then.

Collin was still at home in August 2015 but he was being homeschooled or was going to a different school.Nowhere did I imply Collin was already gone in fact if you read the entire first comment(the long one, don't blame you if you don't), I even specify when Collin likely left home.

I also didn't mean to say he was removed as in Kate lost custody, I meant more like someone with authority strongly recommended it to Kate "or else" and she conformed. I meant it as in it wasn't Kate's idea for Collin to leave.

Okay here's the deal to anyone who is confused.

Collin was homeschooled during the 2015-2016 school year. He seemingly left the house around April of 2016. It's clear the reason Kate didn't post a pic of the tups on their 12th birthday (or a back to school pic) because Collin wasn't there (and Kate used the excuse that they wouldn't "cooperate" for a school pic this year).

As for the shirt from the BTS pic in 2015, Collin most likely wore his own shirt from the previous year. It's not like they return their uniforms at the end of the year or whatever.

Collin was absent from certain scenes in the episodes such as where they did the room swap, the twins' birthday at SkyZone or a similar place, and a few other times. At the time people suspected he was on chicken duty but now we have to wonder what was going on. I think things may be quite different from what's on the surface. But wherever Collin is and why, Jon should know unless Kate does not either, and I hope he's healthy and doing well.

Tucker's Mom said... 148

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Kate is ill equipped to deal with a child with special needs, absolutely to the point of having him involuntarily removed. No DOUBT. I can't say it for sure, but a lot of signs suggest so.

****
We all saw it on the show, very early on. Kate herself said that with 8 kids, she can't do everything. While that's got to be true for any parent with lots of kids, Kate seemed resigned to it. It's as if Kate will put forth X amount of effort, and that's it. She sets her limit and is loathe to give anything more.
She has a strong sense of self preservation and will never forget about her own needs, as most mothers do. Most mothers would find the time and energy, defying the laws of nature, if need be.
I can see Kate being very reticent to focus too much more attention on Collin, and see her accepting his removal without much hesitation.
To Kate, culling the herd makes her a better mommy for the ones who are left with her.
Like suing Jon and building a deck, it's for the health and welfare of her children. Well, the majority of her children.

Why would she put a "Happy Birthday" decoration on one of the twins' chair when it's the 6 younger kids' birthday? No matter what the explanation, she had 5 of them grouped together, and one separated. Even if one of the twins was going to sit between them, why bother separating them on their birthday? They weren't even at the table when she took the picture, so she was planning ahead of time to separate one of them from the others. We already know he was in a separate room, and didn't go to school with them. Now we know he wasn't sitting by the others at the table, either, even on their shared birthday.

That photo also makes me think that he was still home on the tups' birthday in May last year. She probably wouldn't have thought to separate (but still decorate) that chair if he wasn't. But he was gone before the birthday episode was filmed, so he was probably removed some time in May.

What I liked about the saintly mother comment is because it is true...to her rabid fans. They have her perched on a pedestal so high you need a oxygen mask to breathe. She can do no wrong, even when a sweet, innocent child is removed from his home, they praise her even more for doing it all alone.

Layla said... 152

Tucker's Mom, you're absolutely right, Kate is only willing to put forth a certain amount of effort, and no more. Remember when the kids had the flu and all she did was complain about having to deal with their vomit? Any other mother would be trying to comfort her sick children, but apparently that was too much trouble for her. She was only interested in the extra laundry she would have to do.

I wonder--if TLC said they won't film without C, would she bring him back? She does not want him there, but she would never give up filming, even if it was harmful for one (or more) of the kids. It's a lose-lose for TLC, I think. If he stays away, then there will still be questions about where he is and why he is gone. If he comes back, viewers will be watching for signs of stress, showing that filming is harmful to him. But Kate doesn't care as long as someone is filming her.

The point was she was trying to pretend Collin still attends the same school as his siblings(hence putting him in the Lanc school shirt rather than a random shirt that would have made it glaringly obvious he is no longer in the private school). It must have been painful for Collin to not go to school with his siblings all of the sudden and she twisted the knife by putting him in the uniform shirt to snap that picture. That was my point. And no, I don't think Collin chose to wear that shirt that day, for that picture.

Idk what y'all are talking about. In the birthday picture, there's 6 seats with decorations. Joel and Hannah sit next to each other, Aaden now sits across from Alexis and Collin sat in between Leah and Aaden (this is based on an observation from the 10th anniversary special during the dinner scene).

In the pic, all of the seats the kids sat in were decorated.

I wonder if the girls realized that something bad was going to happen and tried to leave some evidence to help find this man. They also left a picture of a man on the tracks. It is just horrifying to think that they girls realized that they were in so much danger that they tried to leave some evidence behind. They were very resourceful to do it, though. I hope this man is caught quickly and brought to justice for what he did to two innocent young girls.

I think we've seen that Collin (and maybe at least on other child) was "handled" with medication, segregation and a nanny for awhile before he was sent away.
It's mind boggling to me, the notion of Kate continuing to film, either with or without Collin.
If she films without him, how do people not acknowledge that a 12-year old boy hasn't slept in his bed, or been parented for a year?
If Collin returns and is filmed, how to people ignore the possible perils of putting this troubled boy out there for public consumption?
I find the very notion atrocious and reckless. Reckless in terms of risking his well being for money and fame.
It's a lose-lose to me, but knowing TLC, they only care about money, so filming is never off the table in my mind.

Piper obviously looked up to Kate and for her idol to basically yuk her yum was despicable.
The Palin men had a tough time filming with Kate. That was obvious. Most men have a visceral reaction to women like Kate.
Kate did not like Palin's patriarchal family and made no bones about pretending.
Kate's brand of feminism is predicated upon the notion that men are useless.

As far as I remember(it was a long time ago so I'm not completely sure), Kate didn't pack enough underwear for the girl tups and gave them some of Mady and Cara's underwear and they were upset about it(they didn't want anyone else wearing their undies which, sorry but I get and I agree with them) so they were "done" and had to sit in the RV while everyone else saw the grand canyon.

I went to twitter and took a look at the picture in question. There are three chairs on one side of the table and four chairs on the other side of the table. The three chairs together are decorated. The chairs on the other side are decorated but there are two decorated together and then an undecorated chair and then a decorated chair. If it was Collin's chair, he wasn't really separated as he was at the same table across from his brothers and/or sisters. The undecorated chair between them could have been for one of the twins. I really don't see what the problem is with this and would have to see a picture with everyone at the table to see where everyone sits.

It seems natural to say how it happened -- fell off a skateboard, tripped and got hurt at the park, etc. -- if it was something innocent. And, no, I'm not saying I think TFW did it. But the fact that the woman beat her children, by her own admission, makes me more curious than

I know no one was sitting at the seats in the birthday photo from last year as I was looking at the picture as I was making my post. I was referring to the seating arrangement from the 10th anniversary episode which is exactly the same as the seating arrangement in the 12th anniversary picture.

And what you're referring to about the one seat by itself, that's Alexis' seat. Aaden, Collin and Leah sit on one side and then you have Alexis, (Mady aka empty chair), Joel and Hannah on the other. So the whole 5 seats together thing you were talking about is what I was confused about.

Yes. I have thought about it, and this is a possibility, especially when one considers he has had issues since Kindergarten.
