Recap: Kate Plus 8 "8 Movie Makers": Onlooker #2 films some orphanage kids

Still catching up on a few outstanding recaps, enjoy!

8 Movie Makers is another cop-out bottle episode, where it all takes place at the house, which is dirt cheap to film, and it's mostly filler. Thankfully it's only 21 minutes, so this recap should be much more brief and a relief for me!

I have a new toy. Amazon fire stick. It's amazing. It has a gazillion apps to access all the T.V. and movies you could ever want, and music, and it's only a one-time purchase of $39.99. Much of the content on the apps is free or at least partially free, if you're a cable cutter, and if you're not you should know you can now pretty much watch all or almost all of your shows this way for much cheaper than a cable box would run you. Even if you like a traditional "guide" and DVR options as you channel surf, you can still have that: you have the much cheaper options now of Playstation Vue or DirectTV streaming on your fire stick, both of which operate more like a cable box for a third of the price and no holes to drill in your floor. If you haven't cut the cord by now, why? They even have sports available now. Best of all my T.V. is mounted over my fireplace, and with the fire stick I don't need any wires coming down from it because it's just a little piece of plastic that plugs into the back. I'm in heaven! Fire stick is not paying me to say this nor do I make any dough if you buy one through the link I posted, I just like sharing things that make life enjoyable.

TLCgo has their own app for Amazon fire, and for once, TLC has an app that is smooth, organized and easy to use. You just browse or search for your series, and when it pops up it shows you all the seasons they have and all the episodes. Scroll on over to what you want and hit play and you're off and running. For the longest time I wasn't able to catch up on old recaps because I simply couldn't find the episodes anywhere, not for free anyway. I like that TLC has now put up all the episodes of all their series on TLCgo now. TLCgo is free, by the way, as long as it's part of your regular cable subscription (it should work just fine if you have Vue or DirectTV streaming, too).

This first aired in August 2011, a whopping six years ago. It's always interesting to look back and see what's different and what's the same. Things are frankly, mostly the same. As per the usual, Kate is taking credit for an episode idea in that she thought of it to have the kids make their own movie. The movie they are forced to live all the time for the cameras isn't enough? Geez.

A company called "Movie Makers" comes to the house, headed by Melissa and Sam. I googled the company to see if they're still around and yes, here they are, still running their camps and private lessons. Their 10 week classes are only $375, which frankly is very reasonable.  They're also still bragging that they are "as seen on Kate Plus 8". Seven years later maybe it's time to drop that association. What's also funny is I found an interview with a very polite Melissa about her experience on Kate Plus 8, where she explains that the idea to hire her was dreamed up by one of the producers brainstorming episode ideas, whose daughter had participated in Movie Makers and enjoyed it. Baw! Busted, Kate. Wait a second, why would you need to sit around a table brainstorming episode ideas for a reality show? I love when people inadvertently out this charade for exactly what it is.

Melissa is an "actor," by the way, and has a decent-sized IMDB page of mostly bit parts in mostly D-list shows and movies. But she did make an appearance or two on reputable shows like Army Wives and as "Onlooker #2" on One Tree Hill. Follow your dreams and all that. Onlooker #2, lol. I prefer ogler myself, and I'd like to be #1 please!

Well this is nice, Kate takes a hike because she wants the movie to be a surprise. More than likely this is not a trip so she's not interested, but it's fine by me. Imagine collecting a huge paycheck, likely in the high five figures, just by saying, "Here kids go make a movie with Melissa" and then going upstairs and cutting yourself up an avocado to put on your salad. Kind of crazy.

The younger kids seem awfully young for the things Melissa is explaining to them: rolling, speed, slate? The kids look like they don't care and more just want to play with the clapboard. I'm going to call this right away that this activity is way too old for them, teens would get way more out of this. With little kids, it just turns more into a chaotic play time. What is with this show and their struggle to find these kids activities that are age appropriate? Usually the activities are way too babyish, but it goes both ways, and this time the activity is way too mature for them to get much out of it.

Collin is yawning away on the couch. The kids pull out a crap ton of costumes from God knows where and start trying them on. What is this movie about? Are they just randomly picking customes? Do the kids understand what they're doing and why? Because I'm confused myself.

Well armchair psychologist this, Mady has decided the movie will be about an orphanage. Melissa instructs one of the sextuplets that she will play an "orphanage girl". Um, does she mean "orphan"? Oh well, actors are not known for being bright.

They cut to a shot of Sam folding up all the mountains of unused costumes and putting them back. Why aren't the kids doing that? They created this cyclone. What tends to happen to celebrity kids, wealthy kids or kids on T.V., I've seen first hand, is that when people come over like this, they don't treat them the same as they would other kids. Happens all the time. They get special treatment, including cleaning up all their crap for them. It's not good, Sam. Not good at all. When I nannied, I used to have to ask the housekeeper to please stop making the children's beds in the morning and cleaning up after them all the time, as I wanted them to make their own beds themselves and clean up after things themselves, and to get in trouble when they didn't. It didn't matter to me things weren't made up as perfect as the way Ophelia would do it, I wanted the children to have to do it. It's important. There is a long line of people in these children's lives who have done them no favors.

Melissa explains that they're going to start filming, but they will film out of order. That's typical of most films. Mady remarks that their reality show is filmed in order, so this is a change. That's not true, we have caught them multiple times filming out of order, and Jon was once ordered to keep his beard for the sake of "continuity." Now why would you need to worry about continuity if you were always filming in order? Heh.

It's fascinating to watch how much time they waste showing us absolutely nothing. There's a whole lot of the younger kids rambling, which is even more meandering because they're so young, and a lot of walking around, and nothing is happening.

Even at this age, it seems to me doing the camp, or having friends over to help make the movie, would be so much more fun than Mady and Cara having to direct all their younger siblings. Kind of a drag.

Collin and Joel are manning the cameras, and they're just way too young for this. They're chopping people's heads off gyrating them up and down so much I'm getting nauseous. Collin is wearing an adorable oversized pirate hat. Hehe.

Great, perfect! Melissa is constantly saying to everything these kids do. I can't stand when all adults do is over-praise kids.

Melissa's introducing herself again. I thought we already did the meet and greet portion earlier. Well, hello, again. Why do I get the feeling Melissa is the type of gal who tends to do stuff like mix up the salt for the sugar?

Melissa says at the moment the movie doesn't make any sense, but she'll figure it out. Um.

The TLC interns are getting cutesy, putting a little of the script up on the screen "Ext. Magical World."

Melissa thinks it's just so wonderful that the kids don't have a problem with looking at the cameras, which is the problem for other kids she teaches. Melissa, that is because since birth they have been filming a virtual Truman Show, you understand that, right? Don't you find their heightened abilities to work so smoothly with a camera crew at such a young age creepy, like, at all? She's getting dumber by the moment. I'm surprised she didn't use the cool industry lingo she's been invoking all along, it's called spiking the camera, and it's such a common mistake even from adult professionals that is should really weird her out these kids never do it.

The kids are starting to lose it with all this filming, and some are hitting each other and getting annoyed. Kate and Melissa are excusing all this atrocious behavior, especially with guests over, as just simply sibling rivalry.

Day three of filming? This doesn't sound fun. It sounds exhausting. That's over half the time it takes to film a real drama episode, like Law and Order, and it's well documented how exhausting those five days usually are. Why does everything have to be a 10 out of 10 here? Why couldn't they just make a short film for half a day or something, maybe a day? Melissa has given up even putting make-up on at this point, heh, and she looks tired.

At this point Melissa says she has no clue how the movie will turn out and it's all over the place. Um, isn't she supposed to be in charge here? How much is she getting paid to be this confused? And in conclusion, may I please remind you that it does not say RSVP on the Statue of Liberty!

So, was Kate really totally MIA all these three days? That's kind of odd, though I really enjoyed the break from recapping her histrionics. But, I have to admit, it makes the episodes even more boring than they usually are when no one is having a mental health episode for me to discuss. Kate said earlier she cleaned her room during all this time. Good, I'm sure it needed it.

Kate looks so tan she looks like she's a totally different race, she looks like people who aren't white but who like to dye their hair blond. She looks ridiculous, and you can really see the difference here in how much less she tans these days. They finished filming and now it's time for the movie premiere. They don't explain how they get from filming to a movie premiere. I'm guessing Melissa goes back to the office and splices it all together in between bit parts as Onlooker #2?

The kids are so young, I'm not sure they really know what a movie premiere looks like to get a kick out of this. But production did a good job nonetheless, making a real mini-red carpet at the house, and Melissa and Sam standing in as reporters asking questions. I like Melissa's movie poster, it looks like a poster from when Lifetime used to make halfway decent Sunday night movies about things like kidnappings. Not bad at all.

Melissa interviews Kate on the red carpet. Shmoopy is in her element. Talk about myself? Yes please!

They all line up on the couches and floor of course with popcorn, and watch the movie, The Orphans' Adventure. Good punctuation, Melissa.

So far this is kind of the plot of Annie, in which the hard knock orphans have to clean all day. Also, it sounds like their real life. Remember Kendra crying because the children had so many chores to do every day? It takes kind of a Stephen King-like twist when some of the orphans get sucked down into a vortex and end up..... in Kate's back yard, far as the eye can see!

I'm losing the plot here, suddenly there are other kids popping up in various costumes, and Mady and Leah find a pirate chest and take something out of it. Oh, Melissa.

For once I think Kate's expression is justified. She's trying to be proud of all this, but can't follow the plot either.

Leah and Mady aren't the worst actors in the world, I'm mildly impressed with their ability to trip and fall realistically, and make scared faces. But the best actor in this whole thing is wearing a unicorn costume so I can't tell who it is.

The hard to follow plot ends with some of the kids in costume inviting the orphans to stay with them. But why? It's extra mouths to feed, and they barely know them. Wouldn't it make more sense to call CPS if children are being worked to death at an orphanage? Or even the cops? Yeah this is me, during every movie. I'm that film-goer.

Melissa is getting quite lovey dovey with these kids after only knowing them three days, affectionately holding Leah's hands and swinging them back and forth and giving her a very warm hug. Does she honestly think that's a good idea for their sake? She's just going to be ripped from their lives at the end of the filming never to be seen again. This is a big reason these kids have the problems that they do now, the revolving door of people doling out love to them, then being taken away, including their own father.

This episode had a huge redeeming factor in that Kate was barely in it. She only swooped in at the end to obnoxiously make this all about Mady and her growth, when all the other kids, especially Leah, were chipping in their fair share and I'm sure grew too! And that's a wrap!

Wasn't Clueless on of the best movies? No, seriously, it was!
It is like a time capsule of that era and Alicia Silverstone was so "rad" in it.
Who knew she'd grow up and feed her child like a bird?

Hollywood.

Hollyweird.

The plot line is so very telling.

Those were some amazing salad days for Kate, weren't they? Think up some bullshit activity for your kids, get TLC to arrange for it all, pay for it, pay YOU, and hole up in your bedroom for 3 days with your rode manager.

And some sushi. I'm sure there was some eating sushi off naked bodies going on.

I saw that episode and boy, was it boring! Sort of like watching someone else's vacation videos. You zone out after a while. It was a hot mess.Wonder who thought this plot line up.

Must have been Hannah as the unicorn since that's always been her favorite 'animal.' (Hence the unpurchased Halloween unicorn onesie, being one the time the tups were lined up for a Halloween photos a few years back, and her stuffed pal Unie !) Maybe Kate was 'punishing Hannah even last Halloween by passively-aggressively ignoring her link to the unicorn suit.

What a treat to have a new recap! Thanks, Admin! And I know it makes your admirer giddy, because she can go over it with a fine-toothed comb and finds more things about you to pick on!

Admin, bless your heart, you think TFW was actually HOME those 3 days? The crew daddies and the not-a-nanny were probably holding down the fort while Schmoopy was out getting her hair and/or skin treatment du jour. If the cameras weren't on HER, she'd do anything to get away from her kids, and the mine-all-mine mansion they ruin with their very existence. Even if they'd showed footage of her cleaning her room, it would've been for the cameras. Again, when they're filming, that house is a SET, and the crew is responsible for any work and/or expense in keeping it clean. I doubt TFW has picked up a bottle of Windex in a decade.

The reason we don't cut the cord is the streaming feature is still sometimes hinky as are the DVRs that come with the it. Believe me, as soon as they get this perfected I'm ditching Cablevision and getting Sling TV. I read CNET and other reviews to keep an eye on when they think it's worth it to cut the cord.

One question: how do you get you internet if you just have the fire stick? Do you use another company for that?

Probably the Use First ones are still good but for only a little while. They are probably from a couple of months ago. It makes my skin crawl of all of that paper/plastic wrap that goes straight to the landfill.

And why would you put a small 2" wide (on the side and top) box then a bigger box, then a big basket?

************************

I meant to add that why would you put a small box and then a bigger basket on top of it for? It will fall off, eventually.

I love the movie Clueless, too! It cracks me up.

I'm finally trying to finish watching The Keepers. I started watching with my DIL, who graduated from Seton Keough (formerly Archbishop Keough) but it was very hard on her. In high school, it was a running...not really a joke, but they'd still whisper and gossip about the murdered nun, and blame odd noises on the ghost of Sister Cathy. She felt so disrespectful when she watched some of the show and saw that her high school :ghost story" was a real, living, breathing person who tried to protect and care for the girls at the school. I waited a bit, but she couldn't bring herself to watch the rest of it (even though she wants to hear details from me when I finish it). So, that's my goal for this weekend--I'm going to finish watching.

It's really strange to watch and recognize so many of the places shown. Of course, since my son and DIL were high school sweethearts, we spent plenty of time at Keough--watching DIL play field hockey, attending ceremonies, etc. All the streets in Baltimore that are familiar, the cemetery where all the documents were buried (I believe that is in Brooklyn, not Baltimore)--it's right up the road from a field where my son played in a lacrosse tournament. I just saw the scene where the two ladies who have the Facebook page are eating at the diner, and realized that I have eaten at that same diner in Catonsville. Such a strange sense of deja vu! And far more interesting than any episode of K+8 has ever been.

I mentioned a couple of days ago that TFW's "snack cart" isn't something new, as I remembered seeing it in that spot in her kitchen previously. I wasn't sure if it was in photos or clips of the show. So, I just took a quick look at her Intagram and found two photos with the cart in that same place:

January 27th: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPxJQgfjIDI/?taken-by=kateplusmy8

Kids eating vegemite at the kitchen table. The cart is in the background in the same spot between the kitchen stools and the fireplace. There's a messy assortment of bins on it.

Speaking of messy, this is a perfect example of what I mentioned recently about how cluttered her kitchen counters always are. Both sides of her kitchen sink are totally covered with junk, (what is all that, anyway?), and the peninsula part has too much stuff on it too. The island isn't shown in this pic, but every time I've seen it it's been almost completely covered with miscellaneous crap.

June 6th: https://www.instagram.com/p/BVAm6QhApCe/?taken-by=kateplusmy8

Photo of "Uncle Ronnie" sitting at the kitchen counter doing algebra. The cart is behind him, in that same spot. You can see yet another assortment of bins on the top shelf.

It's SO GOOD. I think it got written off as just a silly teen movie but it's one of the best parodies of 90's teens I've ever seen. It's also the book Emma by Jane Austen, for a new generation. And finally, it's one of Brittany Murphy's best films (that and 8 Mile). She died tragically some time later.

Layla I really enjoyed Keepers and what an interesting personal connection you have. Please let us know if you have any other thoughts as you finish it out.

Anyone watching the Scott Peterson documentary on A&E? They're putting all the episodes up for free on their web site. Riveting.

That's what I was thinking. She's trying so hard to keep this image up of them being little kids. Most 13 year olds would be embarrassed to have a photo like this posted so publicly. It won't be long before some or all of them refuse to allow her to take photos of them becasue they know she's posting them online.

I think it's creepy that Kate's always portrayed staying in her room as some kind of special reward.
I think what it reveals is the lengths the kids will go to, to spend time with her.
She'll never come to them. They have to go to her, on her terms.
Same with the boys making lunches at o'dark hundred.

And at 13 you're going to want to start watching more mature movies. PG 13 and a few R movies depending on the content. You don't want to sit there and watch some cartoon like Maona with Mommy. But neither do you want to watch a Nicholas Sparks movie with her, it could be embarrassing.

They are supposed to be going through a period of separation from parents now and I don't see any evidence she lets them do that and grow and develop apart from her. She's going to make them rebel the way she hangs onto them like this.

The profoundness of this comment can't be understated.

They come to HER. They meet toe to toe with her, on her turf. It's all about her and what she wants for them on her terms.

When does she ever, ever, meet them on their turf? Literally and figuratively?

This works until about age 13. It won't work after that age.

As far as the movie, not only do most 13 year olds want to do their own thing by now, it's extremely difficult to get five kids to all agree on the movie. At least a couple of them wouldn't be interested and would choose to do something else. This has a feeling of TFW forcing them into a photo op.

Former Lurker (#45), whoopsies! TFW didn't realize that a picture of 5 sextuplets makes the missing one stand out. She thinks just because she's forgotten all about him, everyone else has, too.

I suppose Gladys will be butting in any minute to assure everyone that C is still away, but doing much better, and how lucky C is to have such a caring, smart momma who made sure he got the help he needed. She might also get in a shot at Jon, as what kind of fool would believe that that skirt-chasing wimpy boy would ever try to help with a special needs child?

I was younger and consumed with college when this all happened so catching up on all the details has been interesting.

The real turning point for me was him having that affair telling Amber Frey on December 9 that he lost his wife. The odds that you actually DO lose your wife 3 weeks later purely by accident must be astronomical.

Kind of neat that they got Amber to talk all these years later. She seems genuine and kind.

This is a photo op to show that she's got Hannah with her and Hannah is having a gr8 movie night with her despite the negative stories. Damage control. Not only does TFW need to tidy up the room for a photo op but she also needs to learn to turn on more lights so she doesn't have to use the flash which creates devil dog eyes. It looks like the rug could use a good cleaning too.

I happened to have just caught up on that part and I couldn't figure out their story. Someone, his mom or a sister? "Accidentally" withdrew 10,000 from their account and was trying to put it back in but didn't want a "hold" on it if they put it back in. But what the heck are you going to do with 10k in cash? That's just as bad as a hold on 10k. Even if you DID accidentally hit one two many zeros, which seems very unlikely, you'd just have to deal with the hold and put it back.

It's really sad how much his family still tries to cover for him.

What I vividly remember about Scott Peterson was that he did an interview with Diane Sawyer, I believe it was.
OMG, the crocodile tears made TFW look like Meryl Streep. I mean, he was BAD at it. Not even close to squeezing a drop of liquid from his lacrimal glands.
It was one of those bone-chilling moments that you realize you are looking at pure evil.

IIRC, he was out in the community with flyers and volunteers looking for Lacie, all the while knowing he killed her and their baby, and sunk their bodies in water.

$10,000 and a really bad hair dye job and it was all just a coinkykink. He wasn't running. Nah.

I don't think so, Tim.

No, but I do think they are actually trying NOT to slant it either way. They are letting people who think he did it speak their mind (Nancy Grace, the lead investigator) and people who didn't think he did it make their case too (his family, his defense attorneys).

I'm impressed with all the people they found to speak, and so far I'm actually thinking they're being quite fair to both sides and trying to make sure you see all the evidence on both sides. To be honest, even though I think he did it, I have to admit that the case is not perfect and that to believe he did it means you have to somehow ignore or discount a lot of witnesses who either saw Laci after the time she was supposed to be murdered or saw Scott in his small boat but never saw anything in it that resembled a body. What it does do a good job of is showing that most cases against someone are never PERFECT. That's the fun of the law, for lack of a better word. Sometimes I like a documentary with a slant but sometimes I prefer it be more neutral.

Dmasy said... 67

We ladies sure do enjoy our true crime dramas, don't we?

I am also watching the Scott Peterson documentary.

I have a tid bit for you. Scott's mother had another daughter. She was given up for adoption before Scott was born. In her adult life she re-connected with the biological family. Scott stayed with her after the murder. She offered a retreat place for him. At the time, she believed he was innocent and being persecuted by the press.

She wrote a book -- a very quick read. "Blood Brother: 33 Reasons My Brother Scott Peterson is Guilty". It is based on facts and her experiences with him for the brief while he stayed in her home.

She did some interviews at the time of the trial and then just faded away. I am guessing this documentary will not mention her. Another guess -- she is no longer welcome at Thanksgiving dinner.

Susan1956 said... 68

Is it possible that a decision to Scott's appeal of his sentence (filed in 2012) will come this year? According to the blog on the website, http://www.scottpetersonappeal.org/, the Peterson family has refused to participate in other projects.

The second thing we’re able to share with you is that our family was interviewed about the case for a documentary that is being produced. It is due to be released this year. We turned down various opportunities over the last ten years, but felt very strongly that this was the right time to an interview.

I think they are presenting this story with critera that neither the jury nor the public were aware of but I don't think their aim is to slant it in Scott Peterson's favor. A&E is pretty skillful at creating series like these that prod critical thinking and keep you coming back for more. I wouldn't watch it if this story was being offered up by Jerry Springer or TLC.

Dmasy said... 70

I followed the case closely when it was live. I don't think there was a solid case to convict Scott. When? How? have no concrete (pardon that reference) evidence. Why? did provide his sleazy behavior and motives.

He was convicted. Casey Anthony wasn't. Juries seem capricious when we are looking in from the outside.

Amber Fry always seemed like a solid person who got caught up in something unreal. Once she found out, she went immediately to the police and helped them.

She might be flakey when it comes to picking men to date, but she made the other decisions in her life with maturity.

I think that both Scott and Casey are guilty of murder. Sociopathic murder.

I do find it interesting they're poking holes in Mark Gerago's defense that suggest maybe he's not quite as slick and smooth as he claimed. Why wouldn't he pursue testimony from someone at the marina saying he happened to glance inside Scott's boat as Scott passed by and saw nothing?

Layla said... 72

I'm going to have to watch the Scott Peterson special--it sounds interesting. Was any new evidence presented, or was it just the family making excuses for Scott? I remember reading an excerpt from the book written by Scott's sister (the one given up for adoption), and she said that was always the golden boy--he could do no wrong. She also said that Scott's mother did not like Laci and ridiculed her all the time.

I'm still working my way through The Keepers. I'm on the 6th episode now. I'm not understanding what connection there is supposed to be between the two murders. Sister Cathy disappeared in West Baltimore. Joyce Malecki disappeared from Glen Burnie (South of Baltimore and East of where Sister Cathy disappeared). Joyce was planning to meet a soldier from Ft Meade and her body was found at Ft Meade. So, other than the fact that they were two young women who were murdered within a short period of time in the Baltimore area, I just don't see a connection. The locations are really not very close, and other than a quick mention, the show isn't making any attempt to connect them. The addition of the Joyce Malecki murder just seems like a distraction.

Former Lurker said... 73

I somehow missed that there was an A & E series on a the murder of Laci Peterson. I followed that case very closely from the disappearance through the trial. I just Googled it and I see it's a six part series that airs on Tuesday nights and three episodes have already aired. If anyone else missed this, the first three episodes are on again tomorrow afternoon. I just set the DVR to record them and then the last two episodes after that. Thanks for the info, everyone.

WOW. She's going to go NUTS when she sees this. He's trying to raise $30K. Here's the description:

"We are the family and friends of Jon Gosselin, those who know the loving, caring, devoted father that he is, and those who understand his sincere desire do to that which is best for his children.

Like many divorced parents in America, Jon is a working hard each day and most weekends, wanting nothing more than to spend quality time with his kids. For Jon, it’s been an eight-year battle in family court, one that has pitted him against media and financial forces that far exceed his own.

In the world in which we live, fame and fortune do not necessarily go together, and Jon is the perfect example of that reality. Things are not always as they are portrayed in the tabloids or on television.

Jon has not had a network-funded public relations machine behind him to spin the facts. He works a normal job and earns extra money on the side as a disc jockey. Now he has been forced into an expensive unjust battle for custody, one that drains his time, energy and finances. It is a fight that he did not seek; it is a fight he does not want. His only desire is to be an integral part of the lives of his daughters and sons, and to assure that every decision made on their behalf is made in their best interest. His focus remains on the welfare of his children.

Many people have asked Jon how they could help with his legal fight to win the same rights as other parents: time with his children. This is how. Money raised in this campaign will go directly to the legal battle ahead as Jon fights for his rightful place in the lives of his family.

Please help by donating and sharing this campaign. If the goal is exceeded, any additional money will be donated to Bethany Children’s Home, Jon’s favorite charity. Thank you in advance!
Help spread the word!"

It's an ancient post, but I find it very telling in hindsight that she seems to equate talking about a child's special needs as talking "negatively" about them. And she says they are meeting and exceeding milestones as if it would be shameful if they weren't otherwise.

Says a lot about how she would see it if a child's special needs became apparent over the years. She is everything that is wrong with how some people still handle children with special needs. Treating it as shameful, something to be banished from the family, something negative. Instead of simply a setback and challenge that a child is perfectly capable of either overcoming or thriving despite. She's really despicable.

I hope that Jon and/or Colleen reaches out to their media contacts to first, confirm this Go Fund Me campaign is legit and second, to provide a bit more detail regarding what exactly is different now, after all these years.
I think these clarifications, along with widespread exposure, would get him to that money goal.

This is the problem with Kate having so much money. TLC created a monster.
********************
Yes, TLC did. But if TLC isn't in the picture anymore, how far/how much $ will Katie Kreider go or spend to keep the status quo? She has slightly over 1 & 4 years to go before the remaining 7 teenagers are out of the house.

I follow both Jon and Colleen on FB and the gofundme site originated on her page and has been shared. With both of them sharing it on social media, I can't imagine it's anything other than legit. We've often talked about how Jon should do anything, should move heaven and earth, to secure the right to see his kids and now he's doing it. IMO he should be supported, whatever the amount. How great would it be for him and the kids to see strong support!

Jamesvader1194 said... 121

in all honesty(unless she doesn't care)i feel the fact that Collen being with jon for almost 3 years now proves to me that the Kate fans are wrong about Jon,if he really was this loser who always lied about doing anything for his kids and is desperate for money,i highly doubt someone like Collen would be with Jon for this long. While i'm not saying Jon is father of the year,if hes always running out of money and goes to media to cry about it,I feel Collen would of left him years ago.She does not appear to be the type of woman who's into deadbeats. Then again i don't know Collen personally.

Yes, TLC did create a monster or at least put the finishing touches on it's construction. But if TLC isn't in the picture anymore, how far/how much $ will Katie Kreider go or spend to keep the status quo? She has slightly over 1 & 4 years to go before the remaining 7 teenagers are out of the house. She's not filming, or working as a nurse, and I haven't seen any schilling on Twitter or Instagram. I remain amazed that Katie Kreider was able to last thru the years when TLC wasn't filming. Whether she's spending her own money or the kids' money, is there enough to last until everybody's out of the house? Has she set a certain limit at which she will no longer fight Jon in court? She would be smart to save some money for the lawsuits at least several of the kids will file down the road.

AuntieAnn said... 123

====

She has warped ideas about parenting period. From nurturing infants to potty training toddlers to dealing with adolescent children with behavioral issues, she seems to take anything outside of her idea of a perfect family as a personal offence. Her go-to response to most of the challenges of raising kids that a lot parents face has been anger. If any one of the family falls out her lock-step march, she gets mad right away and sends them to that black hole of hers.

I wonder how many of her dolls she decapitated when she was a child.

But how much of it is she willing to spend is the question. She's seen how Jon has been sucked dry and is she willing to chance that the same may happen to her. TLC isn't backing her this time and if they have told her that she'll only be doing update specials she's got to be somewhat worried about money because what she's got is going to have to last her for the rest of her life. I don't see any TV jobs in her future nor do I see any book deals for her. Of course there are always shows like "I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here".

I of course don't know what her financial situation looks like, but the one thing she is good at is greediness so it's just my guess that she's looked out for herself and herself alone under the guise of looking out for her kids. Susan1956,
I agree that we shouldn't share the name of "that blog". Nobody really pays much attention to it, but we're aware it exists. It's probably an IP grabber, too. Best to stay away.

My DIL watched a little of The Keepers with me today. She said that the school had not been updated in decades, so the school was largely unchanged from the days when Sister Cathy was there. Also, the office used by Father Maskell was kept locked and never used during the years she was a student there. Nobody seemed to know why, although it was said that something bad had happened in that office a long time ago. Nobody ever knew what, exactly, might have happened in there, but it was odd that this one room was never in use. Several years ago, when the student population declined and there was a possibility that the school would have to close, a middle school was added on the ground floor, with the upper floor used as the high school. All available space was used at that point, but not that one office. The school closed at the end of the 2017 school year.
Just a little "inside" info.

I was pleased that she was willing to watch more of the show with me. She said that when you went into the school, the chapel where they'd go to Mass every morning was on the right side of the school, and that office was the first one outside the chapel doors. They'd pass by it every morning, but never once was it opened. She also said that during later years, no office or classroom doors were ever closed. Even if someone was meeting with a student in their office, the door was always kept open. That made the one closed door even more odd. There was a sign on the door that was never removed that said "Principal", but the principal's office was on the opposite end of the school. Nobody understood why they never removed that sign.

I checked out the gofundme page for Jon and it has over $800 raised! Go Jon! If he expects this custody fight to cost $30,000, then Kate is going to have to dig deep into her pile of cash. For that kind of money, he is planning to put up a major fight.

When you work with kids they teach you to do that among other precautions so that there is no temptation to be alone with children behind closed doors or opportunity for someone to accuse you of something. It's a liability thing. Sounds like somebody got sex abuse training.

Jon's Fb. I saved the uninformed for last.

xxxxx Honest question. Jon was on the show for years. They're his kids. How is Kate living in that big house with all that money. Why does he not get any of that money did she get everything?

xxxxx U took the words right outta my mouth! And, why is Colin locked away somewhere to where he can't even celebrate his birthday or go on family vacations/outtings? TLC should ban her show until Colin is back in the mix. I used to love the show but she's too MONEY HUNGRY.

xxxxx It just bothers me! The children are what made the family famous. I loved the show. Why does Kate get all the perks and Jon left out? I remember watching the show and my husband saying "that woman is nasty to him and that husband is gonna get sick of it and walk" I said no way. Look what happenned. Don't blame him one bit.

xxxxx Jon I am so very sorry to hear this! It's truly a shame that our justice system would allow nonsense like this to continue. You are their father and you and your children should be together!
Kate needs to start putting your children's happiness first.

xxxxx Wow. This is just heartbreaking. Every father should get to see their kids. I grew up watching you guys on tv and I know you're a wonderful father and would do anything for your kids.

xxxxx Glad to see this. It is very, very difficult to fight a narcissist (like Kate) in a custody battle. They will lie and cheat and do anything to win. It takes EXCELLENT and EXPENSIVE attorneys. I'm in a similar fight with my narcissistic ex right now. It has taken every dollar I have and every ounce of energy. Good luck Jon.

xxxxx I've always loved your show and tried to see the best in both of you, but this sad. Collin needs to be home!!

xxxxx Jon the lost mine bc he didn't do his part and broke the contract.

xxxxx As soon as I'm able financially I will help you out Jon. Those kids aren't safe with that nut.

xxxxx Where is Collins, why has he been separated from the whanau/ family

xxxxx Jon you're a great father and should not have to go through this to spend time with your children.

xxxxx Ok I will voice my opinion here please no hate ok I have nothing against Jon or Kate or anyone in the family this is not an attack on Jon as a father or Kate as a mom there awesome parents who were caught up in nasty public divorce for all the World to see and the press and new saw everything I do say Kate is and good mom and Jon is a good dad. Kate is a stress out because she is raising 8 kids on her own and she in control because if she isn't the kids will be in charge and will run all over her.

Jon has ALWAYS done charity work and is happy to do it. The children's home, raising money for the soccer and lacrosse? teams.

TFW did an episode of giving back to a food bank in TN and got paid 40K, with all the trimmings. She did a yard sale and SAID that she was going to give it all to the animal shelter.

No way she gave what she really made. I believe she had TLC cough it up in the episode budget and she kept what free cash she made off the yard sale.

She goes to Camp Barnabas and runs her mouth about dumping kids and getting a break and got paid for it!

What a horrible mother and example to young women.

FlimsyFlamsy said... 147

Certainly TFW knows about this campaign by now. Holy cow, she must be enraged. Remember, NOBODY makes money off of her kids but her. Especially not a "certain one" who shouldn't even be allowed to have a single opinion on their upbringing. She probably already called Laverne & Shirley to question the legality of this. And I bet she'll call every penny raised into question, claiming it's not going to legal fees but to beer and weed.

This is going to get ugly, folks. Wait for it. But Jon has been to hell and back with this situation, and I believe he can handle anything she and her 3 fans can dish out. Go Jon. Go kids.

Those poor kids, stuck with TFW this long holiday weekend when she must be positively livid about Jon. The intensity of her anger towards him doesn't seem to have lessened since the divorce. GollyGee said... 154

If TFW is raging and causing a problem, those kids have electronics and a house phone to get a message out to someone for help.

Two jobs?? That mediocre bastard! If he was as smart as Kate, he wouldn't need a job at all.

In all seriousness, Kate keeps talking about the kids needing a babysitter I wonder if she's just so uninvolved that she truly doesn't know that children this old do not need a sitter. I am starting to suspect she just isn't lying about certain things, but really truly doesn't know because she's not directly involved in raising these kids 90% of the time.

I am thinking about the fact that she says the same thing at every birthday. The EXACT.SAME.THING. For years all she says is :The kids are now older, they have thoughts and ideas and personalities and are more self sufficient. But that has been true since these kids were about 5 which is when the divorce happened and when I suspect Kate stopped being truly involved.

Just some thoughts.

OT for a minute.

So I finished Forsaking All Others: The Real Betty Broderick Story: Including Prison Interviews. I think it and Until The Twelfth of Never are the best books out there. The Lifetime movies about Dan & Betty Broderick were definitely slanted & made without any input from the Broderick family. Hindsight is always 20/20, but they never should have married each other.
On paper they both looked good; they both came from large Catholic families, had traditional values, believed in the American dream, etc. But Dan Broderick was also very narcissistic and downright cruel in how he dealt with Betty in the divorce, closed hearings, not wanting to part with the amount of money that would constitute a fair monetary settlement & a workable custody arrangement, all with the blessings of the LaJolla/San Diego legal community. Linda apparently did her fair share in agitating Betty. It doesn't excuse or negate Betty's actions in murdering both of them. One of the authors stated that about the only good thing to come out of the Broderick case was it highlighted problems women can face in the legal system when it comes to divorce.

Betty has a lot of supporters as evidenced by online blogs, etc. but I agree with those who have said she will never be paroled due to her continued lack of remorse and the influence of the legal community.

I remember my grandmother giving my uncles turkey platters as plates during dinners at the farm!

AuntieAnn said... 171

Dmasy, I had not heard that definition of old. I adhere to the you're as young as you feel axiom myself:) but yes genetics have a great deal to do with longevity, if we're not bonked on the head with a meteorite or anything. My mom turns 90 in three months and is still busy in her garden, probably as I write this, even though she has been dx'd with congestive heart failure. Stubbornness is also on her side. I have a couple of years to go yet until I'll be looking down the barrel of being an official "senior". There are perks to that, too, I hope.

Layla said... 172

You know, I don't think the kids are suffering tooo much under Kate's rule this weekend. If she makes them miserable, that will only want them to be with Jon more. think about it--she needs to completely trounce him in court this time. By all accounts reported, there are multiple kids who prefer to be with him. Hannah is just the most vocal of the bunch. Jon wants equal custody. He is in a stable place in life--working two jobs, long-term relationship. There is no good reason for any judge to grant the children's wishes and give Jon shared custody. But that would be a big "lose" for Kate. She may not be able to sign contracts for the kids if Jon has shared custody. She may not be able to force the kids to film against their will. She won't be able to produce the kids for filming according to TLC's schedule if Jon has them half the time. She may have to account for any money she has taken from the kids' trust. The kids who spend half their time with Jon may end up deciding they want to live with him permanently. And, of course, her "brand" (Poor, put-upon single mom struggling to do it all alone and be both mom and dad to her kids) will be destroyed. She won't be able to argue that she can't get a "real" job if there's no need for a babysitter.

Anything other than complete annihilation of Jon will be a "lose" for Kate in court. She is now facing loss of her brand, her career, control over the kids, and unrestricted access to the kids' money. Whatever will she do???

Our son is grown and works in law enforcement. I was born and raised on the Jersey shore and have traveled the world because I married a military man. We love, love, love bulldogs.

Happy early birthday Dmasy!

But that would be a big "lose" for Kate. She may not be able to sign contracts for the kids if Jon has shared custody. She may not be able to force the kids to film against their will. She won't be able to produce the kids for filming according to TLC's schedule if Jon has them half the time.

So true. I don't believe TLC's bs statement about filming "periodic updates"--I guess we'll know if the twins' birthday or the kids' winter break passes without filming--and what other network would take a chance on her with all the information coming out about her current & past treatment of the kids?

Whatever will she do???

I guess she could start by selling off a couple of those pricey vehicals she has. I hope, for the sake of any future patients, she does not resume her nursing career.

I think that the most important battle for Jon right now is to seek joint legal custody. TFW never should have had sole legal custody all these years. There is no reason that Jon should not have a part in important decisions regarding the kids, including whether or not they have to film a TV show in order to support themselves and their mother. And, yes, TFW should not have sole and total control over the money that the kids have earned. She has gotten away with this for far too long.

What she should be preparing to do is downscale to a smaller home once the twins go off to college. Without C and the twins, there will be five kids left and they won't be there for too many years either. If she no longer has big money flowing in from TLC, it would be very hard to continue paying for the maintenance and upkeep of that house and property. Financially it just wouldn't make much sense. But, we all know she will never want to give up her "mine, all mine" isolated compound.

Considering how well known Jon is and all the people Colleen knows, $1200 isn't much of a donation total after over 2 days on line. I wonder if people are tired of this saga and are donating to other causes like the tragedies in Houston. Again you need to be careful where you donate to them also. The Jon and Kate saga has been going on since 2009 and there seems to be no end in sight.

Of course this is just my opinion, but I am sure others will agree.

I have some questions about Jon. I'm not bashing him, just questioning some things in light of the Go Fund Me account.

I've said before that I tend to check in and out of the Gosselin world, so I miss some things. I just took a look at Jon's Instagram and I see that he and Colleen went on a vacation to Mexico at the end of June. I realize that might have been part of a celebration of her finishing school, and maybe she even paid for the entire trip. Yet, I still have to question setting up a fundraiser just a couple of months after spending what is probably thousands on a vacation.

I know plenty of hard working parents who haven't had a vacation in years. Sure, it would be nice but it's not a priority when they're working hard to support their kids, save for college, and put money away for retirement.

I'm not usually a Jon basher, but it doesn't look good to ask for money for legal fees shortly after an unnecessary vacation. In my opinion, every available dime should be going towards fighting for his kids. Actually, it should have been that way for the last several years.

Also, he seems to have family and friends that support him in this, so I would think they'll start contributing some money too. And, what about his mother? Does she have money? If that were my mother, she'd rather give me the funds now and see me finally get custody or more time with my kids, than wait and leave it too me in the will.

Please don't criticize for me having some questions and concerns about this. I usually don't bash Jon, but I do have questions when someone is asking strangers for money. It just reminds me of the time I gave $2,500 to a friend who was having financial problems only to see her foolishly spending and wasting money on unimportant things just a few months later. Shortly after that, her grandmother died and left her money. While I gave her the money as a gift with no strings attached, it did make me rethink my decision and also how dire her situation really had been. I learned a lesson there.

Yes & Yes!

I've only seen bits & pieces of Outdaughtered and TLC seems to be keeping them pretty grounded so far. I wonder if they're using the Gosselins/Kate as a playbook in what not to do/avoid.

I can't bring myself to care what happens to Kate after the kids don't live with her anymore. She can go find a rock to live under or buy herself an island like Celine's. It is the Gosselin children that are important. Their mother hasn't prepared them for the real world and that is the concern. Jon and his family and hopefully Jodi and Kevin may be their saving grace.

Layla said... 182

Sorry, I meant to say there is NO good reason for any judge to deny Jon's and the kids; wishes for shared custody.

AuntieAnn, those pricy vehicles are getting kind of old now. I recall she bought the Sequoia used in 2011, and she also bought the newer BBB in 2011. I don't remember when she bought her Audi (2014 or so maybe?). But those cars have all been depreciating for several years, so she may not get much out of them. In fact, she may be at the point where she needs to start replacing them soon, and without TLC money coming in, she'll just have to suck it up and pay for new cars herself. Oh, and of course M&C will need cars for college. Time to crack open the wallet, Kate!

As far as the house is concerned, it doesn't look like she'll get anywhere close to what they paid for it. I looked at some IG pictures when we were talking about the cart in the kitchen, and noticed that there are two different types of wood floors that run together. There is a picture of Hannah lying on the couch just off the kitchen, petting Mak. It was dated in March. You can clearly see that there is darker wood flooring that ends abruptly and then there's the light wood. If she's replacing portions of it, why not either try to match what is already there, or replace all of it? It's a mish-mash the way it is. She also said during the summer that more of the wood floor was damaged under Nanuq's cage. The carpet in Kate's room looks ratty. Why would she put so much money into building a new deck but not finish the mismatched flooring? If she were ever to sell, that mess would decrease the value of the house. Potential buyers would go into it knowing they will have to pour money into it right away. Of course, she says she's never moving, so I guess that's a moot point, right?

Oh and I spelled vehicle incorrectly earlier. Oops.

Regarding the gofundme account for Jon, I think that if close friends and family members wanted to chip in, they would do that personally instead of going through a public fundraising site. This may just be set up in the event that people who don't know him well or remember him from the show can contribute. It hasn't been well publicized, so not many people would know about it. I'm guessing that he has legal bills piled up from past skirmishes--$30,000 seems like a lot for just one court battle. A friend of mine who divorced and was dragged into court 3 times over the years by her ex ended up spending about that amount total. Her ex spent more because he was trying to outgun her legally. But Jon may now find himself getting buried in legal bills and hoping that people will help him out. I'm sure any amount that can be raised will be a big help to him.

While I wish Jon well, I won't be donating either. I agree with Former Lurker. A Go fund me is the last place he should have gone. And with the current disaster, his timing couldn't have been poorer, and frankly, clueless.

Contributions total almost $1,500. for the first day; I consider that a good start considering people are just becoming aware that the fund has been set up. I hope the local paper does a story on it, resulting in the national papers picking it up because of the "Gosselin" interest. Hopefully then the fund will really take off.

I love the running of the bulldogs! It's one of my favorite commercials, along with the Allstate one with the dad driving while his family is on their phones ("I got a brand new putter you don't even know about. It's awesome") and the Progressive one with Susan Lucci ("who stood by you when you had amnesia? You know I can't remember that!"). Commercials are sometimes more entertaining than the actual shows these days.

By no means am I trying to convince anyone to donate, I just want to say, regarding the trip to Mexico from June, that as far as we know, the court thing started in August.

Anonymous said... 197

Maybe someone can answer this? I donated but, stupid me, didn't do any reading here beforehand and changed my mind. I contacted the GFM people but haven't heard back yet.

Does anyone know or has anyone gotten a refund if they changed their mind? I don't know much about GFM.

I didn't know Jon had went to Mexico right before this! Also, $100 is a lot of money for me.

amy 1, 2 or 3 198....google how to get a refund on your donation to Jon's GFM. They have all kinds of instructions on what to do.

Tucker's Mom said... 199

Donating to Jon is something we've talked about for years. Please don't hold one vacation against Jon. It could be that his gf footed much of the bill and I don't think they were at some 5-start resort like Kate and Steve in Cabo.
That region of Mexico is pretty affordable.
I believe they went after Colleen graduated and that sounds like something you plan for a long time, as something to look forward to as a reward for all the sacrifices one/ a couple makes to get through graduate school while working FT.
Knowing how hard it is to do what Colleen did, and they did as a couple, they deserved it.

I could be wrong, because it has looked like the worm was turning before, but it seems that it's a different ballgame now, with kids old enough to speak and act out against not seeing their father.
I'd hate to see the ball spiked at the one-yard line.
I do believe the money will go to fight for the kids, and that's what matters.
I do not believe Jon blew through all his lawyer/court money on a vacation to Mexico.
They sound and look rather exotic, but can be about the same as me going to the Jersey shore for a fews days.
(which I will be doing soon...yay!)
